News from Tyndall Air Force Base & Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division

A LOOK AT THE NEW SAND DOLLAR INN LODGING FACILITY

The Sand Dollar Inn, Tyndall Air Force Base’s primary lodging facility, is undergoing a major upgrade as part of the “Installation of the Future’s” massive rebuild project.

With a total cost of $104.2 million, the facility will include 360 rooms, a restaurant, laundry facilities, along with business and conference rooms. The facility is being constructed to Miami-Dade hurricane standards, which is one step closer to protecting Tyndall’s mission when faced with future natural disasters. The Sand Dollar Inn is set to be able to sustain winds up to 165 mph and up to a category five hurricane.

A great emphasis has been put into centralizing facilities and activities to increase access for all residents of Tyndall. This will include the Oasis, Fitness Center, Chapel, Dormitories, Lodging Facility and Community Commons all within walking distance of each other.

“A community space in front of lodging includes green space that extends between community commons buildings and has a connecting multi-model walking/biking trail that connects other key areas on base,” said Eric Honeycutt, Air Force Civil Engineer Center senior construction manager. “This area will also have convenient access to the NCO beach [connected by] the newly constructed boardwalk."

It is an Air Force-wide initiative to standardize lodging facilitates and promote a better quality of life to Airmen utilizing on-base lodging facilities. These improvements include increasing sustainability in lodging features to help save on costs as well as creating a familiar environment for members no matter where they might be temporarily assigned.

Furthermore, kitchen equipment is currently being reviewed to ensure the same equipment is available and that items requiring substitution will meet the intended mission requirements of the lodging facility, stated Honeycutt.

“Tyndall has amazing natural features and important missions, both current and projected, that are desirable for several audiences,” said 1st Lt. Donnie Novotny, 325th Force Support Squadron sustainment services flight commander. “The new Sand Dollar Inn will be a statement piece in size and location. Planners have centralized a lot of facilities and activities that will be a great haven for everyone, especially families and dorm residents. Having this facility completed will be a huge milestone in Tyndall Air Force Base's rebuilding story.”

The expected completion date is slated for September 2024.

CITY PARTICIPATES IN ANNUAL HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS & RECOVERY EXERCISE

HURRICANE EXERCISE/CITADEL GALE HURREX/CG

2023 is an annual hurricane preparedness/ disaster response and recovery exercise conducted by Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command USFFC and Commander, Navy Installations Command CNIC. All Navy regions and installations on the eastern seaboard and the Gulf actively participated in the exercise.

Our participation in the Navy's annual Hurricane Exercise/Citadel Gale HURREX/CG is a reflection of our steadfast commitment to preparedness and resiliency, said Cmdr. Michael Mosi, Commanding Officer, Naval Support Activity Panama City. This exercise affords us the opportunity to not only test our own capabilities but also to work alongside our local and state partners to ensure a coordinated response in the event of a natural disaster.

HURREX/CG 2023 is designed to train and enhance shore and afloat commands destructive weather preparedness and recovery plans prior to the onset of hurricane season. The exercise also creates opportunities for fleet and installation teams to practice their external coordination processes, strengthening relationships with local/state authorities and partners so that the Navy is ready to support during what has been predicted to be an active 2023 hurricane season.

Measures have been taken to minimize disruptions within local communities and to normal installation operations, but there may be times when the exercise causes increased traffic around installations or delays in installation access. For more information, contact NSA Panama

NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY COMMANDER EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF READING TO A CLASS AT PATRONIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Commander Mosi read the children's book "The Smart Cookie" by Jory John and Pete Oswald, emphasizing the importance of reading and the knowledge it can provide.

"Reading is the gateway to knowledge and it is the shortest way of exposing ourselves to information no matter what, because there are books on all topics," said Cmdr. Mosi. "I read a lot, my kids read a lot and I fully encourage reading all the time."

Carol Senn, the school's certified library media specialist, shared the sentiment, adding that having a military leader like Cmdr. Mosi emphasize the importance of reading can leave a lasting impact on students.

"In our community, we have both the Air Force and the Navy here, it shows them that reading is important even with our military, reading is important," said Senn. "Having Cmdr. Mosi here today, students are going to remember this for a long time, but also he will be able to share his love for reading, because it’s something he values."

The event was part of Patronis Elementary’s monthlong literacy celebration, aimed at promoting a love for reading and improving students' literacy skills. Cmdr. Mosi's visit served as a reminder to students that reading is a valuable tool in all aspects of life.

Continuing to bring the biggest names in country and rock music to its stage in Panama City Beach, Florida, and its first SOLD OUT event, Gulf Coast Jam returns for its 11th year in 2023. This year, festivalgoers from around the world will travel to listen to today’s top hits.

What makes Gulf Coast Jam special? Rendy Lovelady, Gulf Coast Jam’s executive producer, said it best at the inaugural 2013 event: “I want to bring something that everyone can continue to enjoy for the next ten, fifteen, twenty years. This festival will become a staple in Panama City Beach!”

Fans are already looking forward to this year’s festival, which will feature major headliners each night.

“We are doing everything in our power to ensure this is a fun and safe event for everyone who comes through our gates,” said Gulf Coast Jam COO Mark Sheldon. “Our beautiful beaches are open, and we can’t wait to gather together to hear some incredible music.”

Miranda Lambert was a top-notch treat for country-music lovers! With decades worth of hits such as “Fastest Girl in Town,” “White Liar,” “The House That Built Me,” and "Mama's Broken Heart". Kane Brown and HARDY were also huge headliner names that not only heavily interacted with the crowds, but also performed today's number one hits and brought everyone to their feet!

Behind the music, these three men and their brilliant production team bring everything to

life at this impressive event “I was in the music industry for fifteen years,” says Gulf Coast Jam producer Dave Trepanier. “Music has always been my passion, and Mark and Rendy share that same love. The headliners we bring in don’t typically come to a small town like ours, so for me, whether you like country music or not, it validates Panama City Beach as a great destination!”

I want to bring something that everyone can continue to enjoy for the next 10, 15, 20 + years.

In addition to this year’s headliners, there were over 16 other amazing performances from top country artists throughout the weekend. Performers include Chase Rice, Breland, Justin Moore, Gabby Barrett and many more!

In 2013, Gulf Coast Jam brought in a crowd of thirteen thousand people from forty-nine states and fourteen countries. To boast such a large crowd right off the bat—even before the event was held over Labor Day weekend—was a major accomplishment. “Gulf Coast Jam is a festival different from any other,” says Gulf Coast Jam COO Mark Sheldon. “It’s a perfect combination of vacation and music all rolled into one.”

The first year, however, was all about learning so that the festival could be bigger and better in the years to follow. However, more than on-site logistics have made this event successful. “The support from the city of Panama City Beach has been tremendous,” Sheldon insists. “From the Tourist Development Council board to the police, fire rescue, and all city offices—it has been a team effort to make this event great!”

From the moment you purchase your ticket to the second you walk through the gates at Frank Brown Park or at one of the festival’s beach stages, every detail is meticulously thought out to maximize the fan experience. Don’t worry about food and beverages— there are vendors located throughout the Gulf Coast Jam site to provide fresh Gulf seafood, festival favorites, and more!

Trepanier says that the crowd reaction is, hands down, the best part of the entire festival weekend. “It’s so fun watching people laugh, scream, and cry tears of joy because HARDY or Kane Brown just took a selfie with them,” he says. “That, to me, makes it all worthwhile.”

Unique Atmosphere

If you're looking for a restaurant with a fun atmosphere that really provides the beach-y feel you've been craving, Runaway Island, Schooners Last Local Beach Club and Sharky's Beachfront Restaurant are all great picks! All three restaurants overlook the Gulf and often provide live music so you can tuck in to a delightful meal while you listen to some tunes. You can sit there as the sun goes down and have a breathtaking view of the sunset while enjoying the salty beach air. Dress up or down, these restaurants are perfect for whatever mood you're in that day.

Casual Eateries

Whether you've been down on the beach playing volleyball or walking around Pier Park looking for an outfit for your beach vacation, both Harpoon Harry's and Hook'd Pier Bar & Grill are great places for a casual bite to eat. Hook'd is an ideal location because it's set at the foot of the pier where Pier Park ends, you can sit down and have a delicious meal of fried or grilled seafood while you cool down from your day in the sun. Harpoon Harry's is known for its Seafood Bucket, which keeps locals and visitors coming back for more. Both restaurants overlook the Gulf and offer outside seating.

Upscale Bay Front Dining

If you're looking for a restaurant with an upscale feel to enjoy your seafood and one of a kind views at, Capt. Anderson's and the Grand Marlin, located right next to each other off Thomas Drive, are both great options. Although they don't exactly sit right on the Gulf, they overlook Grand Lagoon, a beautiful setting during both day and night. Capt. Anderson's, a family owned restaurant that's been around for more than 50 years, is well-known for its fresh fish and beautiful view that lets you watch as the fleets unload the fish they caught that day. Grand Marlin has remarkable options like Lobster Fingers and Grouper Picatta and an outdoor seating area upstairs that provides a unique view of the water. Both eateries are a must when visiting Panama City Beach.

FLORIDA JEEP JAM

The Florida Jeep Jam, held from May 15-20, 2023, at Frank Brown Park in Panama City Beach Florida, is an annual event that brings together thousands of Jeep and off-road enthusiasts from across the country. Founded in 2016, the event has grown in popularity and is now in its 8th year and considered to be one of the fastest growing Jeep events.

"I'm thrilled to see the growth of Florida Jeep Jam over the years. It's become a hub for Jeep enthusiasts across the country and we're just getting started!" says Hess

This family-friendly event draws over 15,000 Jeep and off-road enthusiasts in attendance over the course of seven days, and thanks to Vendor Coordinator, Jamie Carr attendees can browse and purchase the latest gear and accessories for their Jeep from over 100 leading industry vendors. In addition to shopping, the festival offers a wide range of activities and events throughout the week, including trail rides and beach parties, providing something for everyone to enjoy. Jeep enthusiasts from all over the country come together to showcase their custom builds, swap stories, and take on off-road challenges as well as enjoy top notch entertainment from local and regional acts.

One of the highlights of the event is the Topless for Turtles, Beach Krawl on Panama City Beach. The event is a fun and exciting way to promote the awareness of sea turtle conservation and protection while supporting the Florida Off-Road Foundation and the Florida Wildlife Commission's turtle rescue efforts.

Another featured event is the Obstacle Course, built by WayPoint X and ran by Panhandle Jeeps. This challenging course tests the limits of both Jeep and driver and is sure to provide an adrenaline rush. Most popular among those participating is the Nighttime Course under the lights.

This year, the Florida Jeep Jam has added a new event to its lineup, the Festivities Kick Off Monday evening with a Jeep Invasion Parade down Beck Avenue in historic St. Andrews. The parade is a chance for Jeep owners to showcase their Jeeps, from Military to modern Wranglers, each Jeep has its own unique personality and story to tell. The parade sets the tone for the week’s festivities.

Florida Jeep Jam is also committed to giving back to the local community. Directed by the event Volunteer Coordinator April Grant, each year nearly 200 volunteers have helped raise over $140,000 for various charity organizations over the years.

EXPLORE OFF–ROAD FLORIDA SPECIALTY LICENSE PLATE

The state of Florida is known for its beautiful scenery and unique landscapes. From the sandy beaches of Panama City Beach to the swamps of the Everglades, there is no shortage of beautiful places to explore in this great state. For those who love off-roading and exploring the state's natural wonders, the Florida Off-Road Foundation, a Florida non profit 501c has created a specialty license plate that allows Florida motorists to show their support for this unique Jeep’n off-road culture and help fund the foundation's core missions.

The "Explore Off-Road" license plate was designed by local designer Eric Shepard and created by the Florida Off-Road Foundation and has been available at all Florida DMVs since June of 2022. In just a few short months, the plate has already sold over 8,000 plates and raised more then $200,000 for the foundation's various initiatives.

One of the recent partnerships that the foundation has formed is with Tread Lightly, a national nonprofit organization that is dedicated to promoting responsible outdoor recreation. This partnership will help the foundation to continue its mission of preserving and protecting Florida's off-road trails and natural habitats through organized cleanups, restorations, and expansions.

In addition to partnering with organizations like Tread Lightly, the Florida Off-Road Foundation also makes significant contributions to local law enforcement and search and rescue programs.

The foundation recently awarded a $5,000 grant to Sheriff Judd’s Polk Sheriff Charities and a $40,000 grant to the Leon County Sheriff's Department to purchase a Jeep for their Search and Rescue Programs.

The core missions of the Florida Off-Road Foundation are focused on restoring and preserving the state's off-road trails and natural habitats, educating people about the importance of off-road culture and heritage, and promoting responsible use of these trails and habitats. The foundation also supports programs that promote civilian participation in organized search and rescue efforts, emergency rescues, and other responsibilities related to off-road activities.

Overall, the "Explore Off-Road" license plate is an excellent way for off-road enthusiasts to show their support for the unique culture and landscapes of Florida while also helping to fund important initiatives that help protect and preserve these natural wonders.

After 100+ years of going to the gas station to fill up your car, there’s finally another option, Fuel Mule Fillup! Fuel Mule is a mobile gas station where we bring gasoline to you! There’s Door Dash for your food, Shipt for your groceries, and now Fuel Mule Fillup for your gasoline.

Starting in late 2022, Fuel Mule began offering gasoline delivery to most of Bay County, FL. Customers download the Fuel Mule app and sign up by inputting their vehicle information, adding a credit card, and selecting a membership level ($24.95/monthly or $249.95/annually).

After signing up, they will be added to a twice-weekly, overnight delivery route, where they can accept or deny the deliveries as needed. Each membership covers up to 5 tanks. Cars, trucks, boats, commercial fleets, lawn mowers, golf carts, or portable tanks. If it takes gasoline, they can fill it!

Fuel Mule is currently offering Regular (87) and Premium (93) gasolines both containing up to 10% ethanol. They are looking to add E-0 and diesel soon.

Rooms with a Purpose

Rooms With A Purpose is a local non-profit that creates dream bedroom makeovers for children with life challenging illnesses. We are a faith-based organization that is all volunteers. We opened our doors June 28, 2018, and we have created 15 rooms.

Sherry Melton founded Rooms With A Purpose to be able to work with a broad spectrum of children. We wanted to be able to work with more than just children with medical issues. Mental health issues is a serious problem for our children in todays world. These children are just as deserving as a child with medical issues.

These rooms are designed by the children for the children. Each room is different, and each theme is different. The families help pick out the theme and colors then they don’t know anything else until they come home the day of the makeover. The makeover is always on Saturday. Friday night the family gets a hotel room and dinner donated and on Saturday they get a fun day. Wherever they want to go and play for the day. We show up at 7am Saturday morning and work until the room is finished. The family comes home at 4 pm and we do a big reveal.
