The Grout Doctor®

is in the business of restoring health and beauty to tile, grout and natural stone surfaces. Our goal is to give new life to your existing tile, grout and stone by offering “grout healthy” treatments and after-care products.

We educate our residential and commercial customers on all available options, We offer after care products designed to minimize the time you spend cleaning!

GIVE NEW LIFE TO EXISTING TILE

Our Services

Grout Sealing: The Grout Doctor® can seal sanded and unsanded grout. A sealer is applied after cleaning to minimize dis-coloration from dirt, acids and grime, and should be applied periodically. A sealer does not make grout stain proof, but it does inhibit penetration of substances that may discolor the grout.

Grout Re-Coloring: Grout re-coloring is the process of applying a pigmented seal-er/stain after a thorough cleaning. Stain can be made to match all grout colors. You can also lighten or darken the color or change the grout color for an entirely new look!

Re-Grouting: Re-grouting is the process of removing the old grout and replacing with new grout. Unless there is subsur-face damage, the tiles stay in place.

Stone Restoration: Our Natural Stone Restoration services include grinding, pol-ishing, honing, cracked stone repair and scratch and chip repair. Our Stone Ex-perts have received extensive training and are qualified to various types of stone.

a letter from the editor

Blue skies for miles!!!

Spring at the beach is by far my most favorite time to be a local! Temps are perfect, the UV is high, and the calm right before season hits is savored.

As a local, spring weather gives me the itch to explore all the fan favorite spots our tourist populate, whether thats simply spending time on the beach, soaking in sunshine, or checking out the new attractions and eateries nearby. I have pretty much nailed down my springtime weekend routine, so take note:

Mornings are spent catching the sunrise along front beach road, watching the town wake up and prep for the day, with coffee and a breakfast sammy from my favorite local shop.

Midday you can find me sunning at the beach, piddling around Pier Park, or grabbing lunch from the pier. Soaking in as much sun as possible is a top priority on the weekends - luckily we have TONS of restaurants with outdoor seating to accommodate and even more outdoor entertainment.

Evenings mean yummy food, strolls along the marina, giggles with friends, and live music around Historic St. Andrews or Downtown Panama City ALWAYS. The nightlife scene is really coming together and it’s a nice change of scenery from my everyday routine on the beach.

Inside this issue of The Circuit, you will find our favorite spots to meet and eat, local happenings, and a whole lot more that is going on around our trendy beach town. I hope you enjoy :)

Ascension Sacred Heart Bay investing in your healthcare needs

Sacred Heart Bay’s mission of providing a full range of quality healthcare services to the Bay County community has remained unchanged since we opened our doors in 1949. We are committed to providing compassionate, personalized care to all persons, with special attention to the poor and vulnerable.

Since becoming a part of Ascension in 2019, Ascension has made a significant investment and continues to committ to investing into the health and well-being of Bay County’s residents and visitors. Here are some of the key programs that Ascension has supported to improve access to advanced care and services so our community can receive safe, convenient care close to home.

Comprehensive Cardiovascular Program

• WATCHMAN procedure for AFib to treat patients who cannot take blood thinners with a recently upgraded device that helps improve the healing process for patients, offers markers for precise placement, and is larger so patients with bigger heart appendages can receive the treatment.

• Expansion of cardiothoracic surgery program for open heart and lung surgeries, including lung cancer.

• Lead extraction procedures so patients can get advanced care close to come with equipment upgrades to serve more patients coming soon.

• A second electrophysiology lab for heart ablations. We will reach the 1,800th procedure milestone in June.

• Heart CT with coronary angiogram and calcium scoring, noninvasive screenings for heart disease. These tests take minutes and help your doctor detect and treat plaque and blockages in your heart’s blood vessels, often before symptoms appear.

Cancer Care

• Ascension Sacred Heart Cancer Center established and will be moving to the hospital campus soon for patient convenience.

• New Women’s Diagnostic Center with 3D mammography, Magseed marker for accurate location of biopsies, breast ultrasound, Dexa bone density scan, and pelvic floor therapy designed for women’s comfort and convenience.

• Added the area’s only fellowship-trained breast surgeon providing advanced treatment close to home.

• Low-dose CT lung cancer screening to find cancer before symptoms appear when it is most treatable.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

• Expansion of general surgery program with expertise in minimally invasive surgery, advanced gastrointestinal surgery and the surgical treatment of cancer.

• Second DaVinci robot added for minimally invasive procedures that reduce the size of incisions and recovery time.

• Expansion of orthopedic surgery program to provide elective orthopedic surgeries and assist patients who come through the hospital’s trauma center and emergency department

Other

• New $6m radiology suite offering advanced imaging to ER patients as well as inpatient and outpatient imaging featuring MRI, breast MRI, CT, fluoroscopy, and x-ray

• Renovation of patient rooms to all provide rooms for patient comfort and safety.

• Refresh of Medical Office Building for patient comfort and convenience.

AIR & SEA 325th CS Operates On a Different Wavelength

From right, Jacob Sels and James Hays, both radio frequencies technicians, install the Cognitive Radio Frequency Systems at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, Feb. 1, 2024. The CRFS was installed across the installation to aid the 325th Communications Squadron in identifying radio frequencies and enhance overall security of the base.

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. --

Moving from reactive to proactive, the 325th Communications Squadron spectrum management office recently implemented Cognitive Radio Frequency Systems across the base.

CRFS is a spectrum monitoring system that instantly locates RF signals in real-time, 24/7. Assisting in preventing potential damages while delivering a new era of efficiency and responsiveness in the electromagnetic environment, the equipment is a complete upgrade for the “Installation of the Future.”

“The new system will help us in being proactive and preventing mishaps instead of waiting for them to happen,” said Senior Airman Daniel Herrin, 325th CS installation spectrum manager.

“All aircraft transmit radio frequencies so it helps with distinguishing what is necessary and what isn’t. With the CRFS we’re able to eliminate [RF] interference threats with more precision, ensuring the security of our communications and operational readiness.”

With Tyndall’s “Installation of the Future” initiative, Air Combat Command selected the base as the first to receive the CRFS upgrade. The new equipment will assist in isolating any interference threats and improving training capabilities when hosting large-scale exercises such as Checkered Flag and the Weapons System Evaluation Program-East.

Tyndall Air Force Base

From right, U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Kristopher Jones, 325th Communications Squadron radio frequency transmissions technician, and James Hays, RF technician, observe the Cognitive Radio Frequency Systems equipment at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, Feb. 1, 2024. CRFS instantly locates RF systems and assists the 325th CS in monitoring the RF waves.

“We have a lot of aircraft moving in and out of our flight line because of the exercises we host,” explained Staff Sgt. David Colan, 325th CS noncommissioned officer in charge of ISM. “If we were to get called about a drone or unidentified aircraft flying in our airspace, we can now triangulate areas within various frequencies and find out what we’re getting interference on.”

Modern warfare is ever-evolving, and the 325th CS continuously works to gain strategic advantages as well as maintain control over the electromagnetic spectrum.

“It’s important to have this advantage over our adversaries,” Colan stated. “Dominance over all dimensions of battlespace such as aerial, psychological, electromagnetic and information is key to success in our future battles.”

Herrin stated the CRFS was installed at four strategic locations to encompass the entire installation.

“The execution of the CRFS system at Tyndall is a shift in the spectrum management for the 325th CS,” said Colan. “It enables us to adapt to the evolving nature of the electromagnetic environment, while also reinforcing our dedication to excellence in mission execution. With

this system in place, we are not only monitoring the spectrum; we are mastering it, ensuring Tyndall’s capabilities remain unparalleled in the defense landscape.”

Air Combat Command selected Tyndall AFB as the first installation to receive the Cognitive Radio Frequency Systems upgrade, enabling the 325th Communications Squadron to gain strategic advantages in the electromagnetic spectrum.

SEALAB I

THE BIRTH OF US NAVY SATURATION DIVING

SEALAB I was the pioneering experiment to determine the capability of men to live and work for extended periods under great pressure at considerable depth. In SEALAB I, conducted off the coast of Bermuda in July 1964, four Navy Divers- Chief Quartermaster Robert “Bob” Barth, Chief Hospital Corpsman Sanders “Tiger” Manning, Gunner’s Mate Lester “Andy” Anderson and LCDR, then Lt, Robert Thompson —lived and worked comfortably and safely for 11 days at a depth of 193 feet. The habitat, the brainchild of CAPT. George F. Bond, MC, USN, was built in 1964 at the Mine Defense Laboratory, now NSA Panama City.

SEALAB I is nine feet in diameter, 40 feet long, and was fabricated from two large surplus anti-submarine net floats. The internal equipment of the undersea house provided most of the normal accouterments of terrestrial living, plus immediate access to the adjacent ocean floor via an open entrance trunk. Surface support was provided from a Navy Lighter (YFNB-12) barge anchored above the habitat, where a multipurpose umbilical ran to SEALAB I, providing power,

communications, video and emergency gas and water supplies. It was also supported by the USN research platform, Argus Island, a Texas Tower structure similar to offshore oil drilling platforms, and a key reason the Bermuda site was selected for the first habitat deployment.

SEALAB I was the U.S. Navy’s first ocean floor habitat and answered the question of whether men could live and do meaningful work on the ocean floor. While it had its share of technical difficulties, SEALAB I was a major success.

In 2023, over 8,000 visitors walked through SEALAB at the Man in the Sea Museum and learned the history of what these brave Aquanauts accomplished. The Man in the Sea Museum is honored to host the celebration of its 60th anniversary in July of 2024. Aquanauts and family members will all be in attendance for this Honored event.

GULF COAST SALUTE AIRSHOW

As the Gulf Coast Salute Air Show returns to the Bay County area, the anticipation is soaring among aviation enthusiasts and beachgoers alike. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Gulf of Mexico, this exhilarating event promises heartstopping aerial displays, thrilling performances, and family-friendly entertainment, making it a must-see attraction for visitors and locals of all ages. With its rich history and tradition of honoring military service, the Gulf Coast Salute Air Show embodies the spirit of patriotism and celebrates the awe-inspiring beauty of flight.

Scheduled to take place on May 4 & 5, 2024 at the Russell-Fields City Pier, the Gulf Coast Salute Air Show is met with eager excitement. The air show is making its return to the Panhandle after a six-year hiatus. Damages caused by Hurricane Michael in 2018 caused setbacks, but the resilience and determination of the community shines through as we welcome back this beloved event. This air show is made possible with the collaboration of Tyndall Air Force Base, the Bay County Chamber, the Panama City Beach Chamber, Panama City Beach Parks and Recreation, and Visit Panama City Beach.

“Visit Panama City Beach is thrilled to have the opportunity to host the 2024 Gulf Coast Salute Air Show on the white sandy beaches,” said Visit Panama City Beach President and CEO Dan Rowe. “We are such a military centric community and it’s important to us that we work with the military to make momentous events like this happen.”

One of the highlights of the Gulf Coast Salute Air Show is its impressive roster of aerial performers, showcasing skilled pilots and aerobatic teams renowned for their daring maneuvers and precision. Pilots will have a practice day on Friday, May 3, and will fly on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All three flight days are open to the public.

26 THE CIRCUIT | DINING & ENTERTAINMENT 2024

Along with vendor booths lining the road in front of the pier, a special traveling exhibit will be featured at the event. CAF RISE ABOVE has a fully functioning mobile movie theater playing two compelling original RISE ABOVE short films. The films tell the story of the Tuskegee Airmen and the WASP. Each film highlights the obstacles both groups overcame to be able to serve their country during WWII. The PCB Chamber of Commerce has graciously sponsored this exhibit, bringing a unique element to this already extraordinary event.

Beyond the excitement of the air show itself, the Gulf Coast Salute holds special significance as a tribute to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Attendees have the opportunity to honor and support military personnel past and present, recognizing their sacrifices and contributions to the nation’s security.

As the countdown for the air show begins, plan how you’re going to spend it and figure out who you are most excited to see. Check out the list below to see all the demonstrations and performances.

#MeetMeDowntown

MEET ME DOWNTOWN

Throughout Panama City there is a vibe that’s part coastal tradition and part contemporary cool. Distinct from the bustle of nearby beaches, this is where a marina district and an eclectic mix of businesses meet to create a welcoming atmosphere and a whole lot of downtown fun. The colorful visuals of nearly a dozen murals and a wide-ranging collection of art and retail venues set the stage. And a variety of downtown restaurants and gathering places combine to offer something special for those looking for a good meal and a good time.

SEAFOOD AND A VIEW

From its scenic location on the protected shores of St. Andrews Bay, Panama City has the perfect setting for downtown dining with a view.

Harrison’s Kitchen & Bar is the newest addition to Panama City’s restaurant scene, serving coastal and Southern dishes with beautiful views of the Panama City Marina and St. Andrews Bay. The large fullservice bar is joined by indoor and patio seating.

Next door, Hotel Indigo has two waterfront dining options. Tarpons, with indoor and veranda seating, overlooks the bay and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Steam on 5 is a rooftop lounge where the dining experience includes curated cocktails and amazing sunset views.

TASTY ESCAPES

Along Harrison Avenue, diners have a world of cuisine from which to

choose and local restaurateurs serve up some tasty global options. The curry and tabbouli are favorites at Trigo San Francisco Style Deli, where west coast culture and international cuisine collide. True Mexican flavors can be found at Maddie’s La Casita and specialties include authentic street tacos, flautas and delicious Mole sauce. House of Henry’s Irish specialties include traditional fare like shepherd’s pie and lamb stew alongside traditional American pub favorites.

MEMORABLE OUTINGS

Bagel Maker, the top morning spot for homemade bagels and breads, is also popular for its lunch sandwiches. Big games are best viewed on the big screens at Lone Star Boil House sports bar while enjoying shrimp, crawfish and more.

To check out even more of what makes downtown Panama City so tasty, both for the body and soul, gather your gang aboard a Panama Pedal Tour. Some have called this multi-passenger, pedal-powered megacycle tour a rolling party machine. And beyond the tour, beyond the food and drinks, there are always plenty of reasons to meet downtown.

The number of excellent dining options combined with a variety of ways to have fun make this historic downtown with the contemporary vibe a refreshing spot to enjoy an evening out or a day with friends. There is always a reason to say, “meet me downtown.”

38 THE CIRCUIT | DINING & ENTERTAINMENT 2024

Recently, we sat down with Mark Hess, the founder of Florida Jeep Jam. Known to be an innovator and visionary, Hess has been successful over the years by growing his annual Jeep event into a favorite among Jeepers from all over the country. He discussed his latest endeavors and shared some insight on an interesting Jeep related trend.

Why do people put rubber ducks on Jeeps?

At the heart of the Jeep duck phenomenon is a desire to put a smile on someone’s face. Jeep owners leave rubber ducks on other Jeeps to surprise the owner. It is a random act of kindness among fans of this beloved auto brand.

A custom that started after one Jeep owner felt unsafe and unwelcome, Jeep ducks are all about the opposite, making strangers and travelers feel like they are part of something bigger and kinder.

How did Jeep ducking start?

The movement now known as Jeep Ducking began in 2020, during the early days of COVID, in Ontario, Canada. After an ugly spat in a gas station parking lot, a Jeep owner named Allison Parliament needed to rely on a friend for a much-needed pit stop to calm down before continuing down the road.

To thank her friend, Parliament bought a bag of rubber ducks and hid them around his house as a joke before heading farther north into Canada to reach her family’s home. Prior to scattering the ducks around an unsuspecting friend’s home, Parliament put a single yellow duck on a stranger’s Jeep in the store’s parking lot, with a simple, note that read, “nice Jeep.”

The owner of that Jeep saw her and laughed then suggested that she post about it on social media. She did, and that was the birth of a movement that now has more than 73,000 fans (and growing) on Facebook. Parliament’s social media group is now the official Jeep duck account recognized by Jeep itself!

Hess was excited to share the news that Allison Parliament would be at Florida Jeep Jam 2024 as he introduces Florida Off-Road Foundation’s mascot (and of course it is a rubber duck) named, Billy Wheely.

Billy is a duck on a mission to educate off-road enthusiasts on the importance of trail maintenance through organized Clean & Krawl events. Proceeds from the sale of Billy Wheely and the Explore OffRoad Florida Specialty License Plate help fund these events. That’s why Billy proudly displays his Explore Off-Road Florida License Plate on his tail feathers.

Florida Off-Road Foundation, Inc. (FORF) is a nonprofit corporation founded by Hess under section 501(c)(3) charitable organization of the Internal Revenue Code. As the creator of the Explore Off-Road Florida Specialty License Plate, FORF’s core mission is focused on restoring and preserving Florida’s off-road trails and natural habitats, promoting responsible use, and educating people about the importance of Florida’s off-road culture and heritage. The Florida Off-Road Foundation has partnered with Tread Lightly!, a national nonprofit organization. Tread Lightly! aims to protect recreation access and opportunities in the outdoors through education and stewardship initiatives. Their principles emphasize responsible use of motorized vehicles in outdoor environments.

Panama City Beach isn’t just about stunning beaches. We’re a haven for both locals and visitors seeking world-class food and entertainment. Fresh Gulf seafood reigns supreme, but our diverse culinary scene offers something for every palate. From local gems to national favorites, our restaurants cater to every craving.

The vibrant energy extends beyond the plate. Panama City Beach boasts a thriving entertainment scene, ensuring there’s always something to do. Whether you’re seeking family-friendly activities, lively nightlife, or a day at the beach, we have it all. This focus on entertainment isn’t just for show. It’s about creating a fantastic quality of life for our residents.

The big premier of ROADKILL was released at the Grand Theatre to a sold out audience. We were also thrilled that the cinema company picked up the movie for a short run on their regular schedule. Los Angeles played host to the worldwide premier later that same week with all the stars and crew walking the red carpet. Thank you Warren Fast for continuing to choose Bay County and NW FL as the basis for some of your fascinating feature films.

The GREAT FOOD TRUCK RACE (Food Network) filmed for several days in both Panama City Beach and Panama City. The Skywheel was the perfect backdrop to represent Panama City Beach on that Friday afternoon, with the New Years Eve Beach Ball serving as the timer for the chefs’ competition. The next morning was spent at the St Andrews Farmers Market. Since it was the Salty Dog celebration, a new dog mayor was voted in and Tyler Florence from the show had a slew of photos with patrons and pups. After the festival, the Food Trucks had to find their own location along downtown Harrison Avenue. This new season will start to air in June, with Bay County’s episode being the 7th show, so set your DVR!

Thriving restaurants, exciting entertainment options and an abundance of retail shops are the cornerstones of our local economy. They attract visitors, who in turn support these businesses. It’s a win-win situation. By continuously enhancing our offerings, we ensure a vibrant community for everyone. To truly experience Panama City Beach, get out and enjoy all that the city has to offer.

And soon, get ready to experience Panama City Beach like never before! The iconic Russell-Fields City Pier is getting a makeover, featuring a stunning new deck (recently installed), refurbished restrooms, and an upgraded restaurant that will allow for savoring delicious food and drinks while gazing out at the breathtaking Gulf of Mexico.

We are the world’s most beautiful beaches – where delicious food meets endless fun!

HGTV continues to film a variety of shows here in Bay County. HOUSE HUNTERS, BEACH FRONT BARGAIN HUNT, BEACH FRONT RENOVATION, and most recently, MOTEL RESCUE, film in Panama City Beach. This was immediately after the tornadoes ravaged the East End of the Beach, but the motel to which they came to give a face lift was not damaged. Air time for this will be in June or July of 2024.

MAMA JUNE, FAMILY CRISIS, made a return visit to their favorite vacation spot, Panama City Beach. Their last trip/show filmed Mama June getting married on the beach. This episode was a celebration of life for her oldest daughter who recently passed away. While it was a somber occasion, the family and crew did all they could to make it a beautiful episode.

There were lots of other shoots that were noteworthy, but the Film Commission will surprise you with some of those as they are released.

And REMEMBER…If your home or business is asked to be used as a filming location, PLEASE contact the Film Commissioner, Julie Gordon, at 850.819.4694, floridafilmoffice@knology.net. They need to provide certain documentation for your protection and theirs.

Glen McDonald President, Gulf Coast State College

Tourism is the leading industry in Bay County, supporting thousands of local jobs. With tourism, there is a need for a robust hospitality industry. The Emerald Coast is strategically being marketed as a year-round tourist destination; it is essential to have workforce-ready employees.

With Gulf Coast State College’s Culinary Arts Program, and the more recent Hospitality & Tourism Management Program, the College has now become fully-equipped to handle the training needs that accompany these two vital industries.

Recognized as one of the top three culinary programs in Florida, the Culinary Program at GCSC offers an AS degree in Culinary Management, as well as two certificate programs. Students are trained by professional chefs in facilities that are state-of-the-art and unsurpassed in the region. With a hands-on approach, students are not only trained in the kitchen, but

also the front of the house in the John Holley Dining Room located on the Panama City Campus. Each Fall and Spring, this “classroom” is opened to the public, and students get to practice what they have learned. In the Fall, à la carte luncheon menus are offered called “Cuisines of the World.” In the Spring, a superb dinner is offered, featuring regularly changing menus.

GCSC’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program offers an AS degree that is designed to prepare students for careers ranging from restaurant and hotel operations, to planning conferences and events, as well as tourism and transportation. The program is tailored to train local employees and to help fill critical positions that are in need.

Our College is becoming a key player in filling the missing gap that exists in training for individuals in the hospitality and tourism arena. It is the College’s vision to join as a full partner in the economic development of the region, by building upon our local economic drivers and making them stronger for our citizens.

For more information about these opportunities at GCSC, please visit gulfcoast.edu. We look forward to seeing you on campus.

There are many things that make Panama City Beach the perfect yearround destination. The pristine white sand, the sparkling turquoise waters, the family-friendly events all year long, but a hidden gem is our culinary scene. As the seafood capital of the South, Panama City Beach offers memorable dining with the easy-going vibe you seek from a coastal town. As a visitor or a local, you can expect welcoming service, unparalleled views, and delicious food. Spending all day at the beach can really work up an appetite, but you’ll never have to travel too far to find a beachfront restaurant. Become a Real. Fun. Foodie. while you stay at the Real. Fun. Beach!

Our unique location makes it the ideal spot for cuisine with Cajun, Gulf Coast, and American Southern traditions. Whether you yearn for fresh-

caught fish, hanker for barbecue or crave the down-home heat of a hearty gumbo, you’ll find what you’re looking for in Panama City Beach. Enjoy a meal at one of the award-winning restaurants in our area. It’s a tradition to dine early at Capt. Anderson’s and watch the fishing fleet unload. Dining under the grand old oak tree at Firefly will take your senses away to the outdoors at a Mediterranean bistro. Enjoy the breathtaking 25,000-gallon aquarium at Saltwater Grill. Grand Marlin restaurant has a personality all its own with locally sourced seafood dishes.

But make no mistake, Panama City Beach has many options for sweets lovers, too – from candy stores with floor-to-ceiling options to mighty milkshakes to cool you down from the Sunshine State’s heat.

In Panama City Beach, every meal is an adventure, a journey through flavors as vibrant as our sunset skies. Come hungry, leave fulfilled, and carry the flavors of PCB with you wherever you go.

Mark McQueen Superintendent, Bay District Schools

As Superintendent, I am constantly inspired by the dedication and hard work of our educators and students who are collectively striving to restore excellence in education and put the ‘A’ back in Bay.

One initiative that has garnered remarkable community support is our #MarchIntoSuccess campaign, which is focused on improving regular, on-time attendance. I want to sincerely thank the entire community for their commitment to this vital aspect of student success. Your involvement is instrumental in creating a culture of attendance awareness, setting our students on the path to achievement.

With the state testing season approaching, I am confident that the diligence and efforts of everyone involved will shine through in our test scores. The dedication our students and staff demonstrate is a testament to our unwavering commitment to academic excellence. While test scores will never be an accurate measure of the love and passion our educators bring to their students each day, we know these assessments are a valuable part of the school’s overall journey, and so we definitely make them a priority.

I am proud to share that our team’s efforts are paying off. Our graduation rate stands at an impressive 88.7 percent, surpassing the state average for the first time. This achievement is a testament to the collaborative efforts of our BDS Team of Teams. However, we are not content with resting on our laurels; we are steadfast in our commitment to further improving this rate and ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed. With fantastic post-secondary institutions like Florida State University Panama City Campus, Gulf Coast State College and Tom P. Haney Technical College right in our community, we’re excited to help all of our students develop individualized pathways to success after graduation, and we’re grateful to all who assist in this endeavor.

Exciting opportunities also abound in expanding our Career and Technical Education programs, with J.R. Arnold High School at the forefront for new programs that meet the needs of our employers. As we continue to enhance these programs, we prepare our students for success in a rapidly evolving job market, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed for future prosperity.

I sincerely thank the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce and the community for your unwavering support. Together, we are creating a brighter future for the students of Bay District Schools, and I am honored to be part of this journey toward excellence.

Becca Hardin President & CEO, Bay Economic Development Alliance

What an incredible past few years it has been for economic development in Bay County, Florida. The Bay EDA team has been tirelessly dedicated to diversifying our economy and fostering growth for both existing and new companies. Throughout 2023 and 2024, the Bay EDA has provided support to five previously announced companies, assisting them in establishing or expanding their presence in our vibrant community. While announcing new projects is certainly a “win”, it’s the ongoing commitment to nurturing these ventures that truly defines our mission.

With the bar set high, the Bay EDA team hit the ground running in 2024, having engaged in successful recruitment missions spanning Mexico, Austria, Germany, and Miami. As a result, we have already hosted 2 prospects in Bay County, with two more prospects anticipated by the end of April.

One of the most significant achievements of the year thus far has been the successful securing of an $11.25 million Triumph Gulf Coast grant in partnership with Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) to

support Premier Aviation USA Overhaul Services (Premier Aviation). This milestone marks the establishment of the first commercial maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) provider at ECP, paving the way for future growth and opportunities in the aviation sector.

With that being said, the Bay EDA is gearing up for MRO Americas in Chicago this April, where we will showcase Bay County’s assets to both domestic and international players in the aviation industry. Already, several MRO providers have expressed keen interest in Bay County, which serves as a testament to positioning Bay County as a prime destination for aerospace investment and collaboration.

Moving forward into 2024, the Bay EDA remains steadfast in its commitment to aggressively market Bay County to the world. With a focus on aviation/aerospace, marine, and advanced manufacturing sectors, we are capitalizing on the inherent strengths of our region to attract new opportunities and create a brighter future for all citizens of Bay County.

Senior year for high school students is a whirlwind of final exams, senior photos, caps and gowns, prom, and college applications. Amidst the excitement, a question often lingers: what comes next?

For many graduating seniors, summer break is a prime opportunity to bridge that feeling of uncertainty about the future with a plan of action. Exploring careers through paid summer internships is a great way to become more comfortable with planning for the future. These experiences may lay the foundation for a successful future career with real-world work experience and career exploration. An internship is also a powerful tool to stand out from the crowd in college applications and job interviews.

Nearly 7,000 youth across the state in 2023 spent part of their summer exploring careers through the CareerSource Florida network. The summer of 2024 is poised to be another successful season for Summer Youth Employment Programs across the state, including right here in the CareerSource Gulf Coast region.

The Summer Youth Employment Program, which features internships and career exploration, can be a gamechanger for students, especially those who may have economic and other challenges, and the program could be that deliberate link to education and career success.

What can participants expect from the Summer Youth Employment Program? Students “earn while they learn,” exploring careers while honing the employability and soft skills that employers say are so often missing from young adults starting out in careers.

Students are paired with a mentor that guides them to discover interests and career fields, then they are matched to local employers in that career pathway.

Before starting the hands-on technical training at the assigned worksite, participants attend workshops with soft skills training and employability skills training that prepare them with the tools and skills to navigate the job market. These skills include communication, problem-solving, time management, and customer service. Participants learn to create a resume and cover letter, then are prepared for interviews, featuring mock interviews with professionals. Program participants are incentivized with monetary rewards upon successful completion of the workshops.

Employers partner with CareerSource Gulf Coast to provide the paid training that can help carve out a career path that leads to permanent employment for some of the participants and post-secondary training or college for others.

Eligible students must be 17 - 24 years of age, motivated to succeed, and have completed their studies in high school, college, or a career certification program. Students must be a resident of Bay, Gulf, or Franklin County. Eligibility is also based on income and other factors.

Here’s what interns in the Summer Youth Employment Program can expect this summer:

• 5–8-week program starting in early June

• 20-30 hours per week gaining valuable work experience at an employer in Bay, Gulf, or Franklin Counties

• In addition to regular pay, students can earn at least an additional $500 for meeting performance and program goals

• Soft skills and career-readiness training provided by CareerSource Gulf Coast

• Career counseling to assist with employment and/or college enrollment

• Mentors to guide them through their journey

• Building a network to establish professional connections

• The potential to continue employment at the worksite after the internship concludes

The partnership between CareerSource Gulf Coast and the private sector is a win-win investment for the state’s future workforce and Florida’s top industries. It is part of the strategic vision under Governor DeSantis for Florida to become the number one state in the nation for workforce education by 2030. To achieve this goal, it is a priority of ours to introduce Florida’s students to career opportunities and work experiences creating a pipeline of talent.

Above all, the Summer Youth Employment Program is an investment that can create a ripple effect by instilling confidence and empowering young adults to drive positive change in our communities.

Young adults and employers who would like to take part in this unique opportunity are encouraged to contact CareerSource Gulf Coast staff to determine eligibility for the program. Call our youth career manager at (850) 872-4340 to get started.

This program is only one of the many workforce opportunities available in the area, and we encourage employers and young adults to reach out to learn more. CareerSource Gulf Coast has been connecting employers with qualified, skilled talent and Floridians with employment and career development opportunities for more than 25 years. There is no charge for our services by our highly skilled staff. Please contact us at 850-872-4340 or visit our website at careersourcegc.com.

IDEACAMP

INSPIRE

I remember the days of going to camp as a youngster. I was ready to take on the world, live new experiences and make new friends. I still remember some of the most detailed thoughts I had back then, even though it was more than 40 years ago. Those days at camp have stuck with me along the way.

At the Beach Chamber, we run a miniature camp each month called IdeaCamp. Imagine good food and drinks, great friends and some fresh experiences all packed around fresh ideas that you can carry with you day-to-day as you build your network and your business.

This is what IdeaCamp is and this is what IdeaCamp does. You will be inspired to reach for more because you will become more aware of what is available to you. You will get energized by the magnetic atmosphere and the upward draw that the Beach Chamber environment places on you. You will be ignited to mobilize what you have learned and go out the next week making an impact along the way.

A day at camp can make a huge difference. It makes you ask for more, it provides opportunity to learn and grow, and it gives you relationships forged in such a way that cannot be replicated elsewhere. Such is the case with the Beach Chamber IdeaCamp. Make sure to check out the Beach Buzz or call the Beach Chamber for an update on the next event. If you want lasting connections, come to IdeaCamp. You’ll be glad you did.

GET INVOLVED WITH YOUR CHAMBER

CONNECT at Chamber events to build relationships with other members...get that face time! We host many events for you to choose from like Business After Hours, Friday at The Beach. IdeaCamp and many more. Members do business with members!
