Drifting Back – January 2010 by Larry Wilson

30 Years Ago (January 1980)

A nice balance of new and old members formed the 1980 Board of Directors: President - Rik Larson; Vice President Bess Feil; Secretary - Nona Morley; Treasurer - Kern Breaux; Activities Chair - Al King; Social Chair - Kathleen Peebles; Tech Chair - Dwight Mitchell; Publicity Chair - Stan Breyfogle; Charity Chair - Betty Fielding; Newsletter Editor - Trische Robertson; Speed Events Chair - Mike Willis; Carol Weber - Membership chair; and, Past President - Ted full force for this one: Marv Smith, Jim McDade, Randy Colbert. Paul Bates was the Zone 7 Rep. for 1980. Vidmar, Harvey Cain, Kirk Bradford, Gary Thompson, Bob Berriman, Bob Peake, Steve Taggart, and Ron Boeck. The new board got the needle moving well before the first of the year. Ninety members attended the January 11th Past has-beens (past presidents) of the club in attendance dinner meeting at Posey’s Cottage to preview the crab din- included Harvey Cain (1977), Larry Wilson (1968-69, ner on tap for CRAB NINE. In the January DRIFTER, 1982), Kirk Bradford (1986), Jim McDade (1987-88), Rik Larson reported 20 entries had been received for the Randy Vidmar (1989), Ray Clements (1984-85), and September 20-21 Carrera de Sierra two-day rally, and Pat John Meunier (1972). Also there were SVR members and Larry Wilson, CRAB NINE chairs, reported 30 entries Oran and Grace Crumley from Paradise, California. Their were on-hand for the April 11-13 weekend. And, this was PCA membership went back to October 1958 as charterbefore the entry forms had been printed for either event members of Sequoia Region (then Fresno Region, later San (sold lots of $60 T-shirts with free CRAB entry)! Joaquin Region). The annual first-come-first-serve quest for CRAB autocross car number 77 was settled early with requests from Emmett Wilder (RR), Ted Atlee (GGR), and Bill Patton (GGR). Atlee had the earliest postmark. Although Atlee and Wilder each had #77 painted prominently on both sides of their much-modified 914-6 race cars, Patton did not. He apparently saw an opportunity for a modest financial gain, but no joy this time.

10 Years Ago (January 2000)

A new century and a new board of directors: Tim Fleming (president), Russ Hildebrand (vice president), Larry Clark (secretary), Phyllis True (treasurer), Shelagh Matthews (social director), Tom Sisson (membership director), Glen Brooksby (competition & safety director), Mike Willis (newsletter editor), and Bob Peake (past president). At the January 5th board meeting, treasurer Phyllis True announced the club exceeded its 1999 budget by $4,000.00 through careful Rik Larson and Stan Breyfogle conducted the January 13 control of expenditures by the 1999 board. Just itching to put on an event? Never chaired an event before? We can help you. We have some general guidelines available for all kinds of events............ just for the asking. Planning for the 2010 calendar year (and even in to early 2011) will be discussed and events can be calendared at the meeting on Thursday, February 4th (see the details on page 3). We have dinners scheduled for the first six months except for the month of May. And we are looking for members to chair a dinner for each month for the rest of the year. And several tours are already planned for March (Pacific Grove 3-day tour and a day tour to the Western Railroad Museum). Contact our Social Director, Helen Ashuckian, if you are interested in chairing a dinner or leading a tour in 2010 or early 2011. Suggestions for tours that keep popping up include: Strawberry Lodge, Bodega Bay, Dunsmuir, Monterey, Yosemite, Death Valley, Gold Country, San Simeon, Wine Country, Lake Tahoe, Virginia City. And maybe even some tours might originate right after our monthly first Saturday breakfast. Our Competition Director, Frederick Rauch, can definitely use help with the AX situation (headed up by Bob Peake). Various Driver’s Education events have already been scheduled for the first half of the year and more are planned. SVR will present a concours out at Niello Porsche in early June that will be part of the 2010 Zone 7 Concours series. The rally schedule has not been developed yet but there will be a poker run (May 15) and also a kid’s rally this year. And a number of new member only events are being discussed by Doug Klein, Lee Deter, and Dan Rowland. If you are not able to attend the meeting on February 4th but still are interested in chairing or can assist on an event, contact either the Social or Competition Director. Remember: $5 per person for pizza and soda on February 4th.

Tech Article: Do you know the age of your tires? by Jim Kinnicutt Special thanks to ABC News

Hello to all. Here we are and it’s already 2010… Hard to believe!!! Time flies and, with it, so does the age of our tires. Last month we talked about tire characteristics and how they are affected by age. As a result of that article, the question came up… “How can we determine how old our tires are?” Actually, there is a very informative video by John Stossel / Brian Ross on ABC News that goes into this very subject. You can view it at: http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4826897&affil=wfaa First you must watch a short on-line commercial (sorry about that – I didn’t do it!), and then a very interesting news piece on the shelf life of our tires. In a nutshell, the date of manufacture is printed on the side of all tires. There is a 3 or 4 digit code on the side wall of every tire. See photo: - A 3 digit number assumes 199x … so <438> would be 43rd week of 1998. - A 4 digit code assumes 20xx. - With this in mind, the code <4302> in the photo to the left would read as the 43rd week of 2002.

Remember, Porsche recommends replacing tires over 6 years old (see the December ‘09 article). With that in mind, it is always best to insure you are getting “young” tires at the time of purchase. If you watch the video clip, you will hear about tires being sold as new that, while un-used, can be several years old before they are even mounted on your baby!! Buyer beware. I hope you find this useful and keep those questions coming! Jim Kinnicutt jkinnicu@yahoo.com the drifter

The New Member Group

A Program of interesting activities for New Members by Doug Klein, SVR Membership Director G-24, an abbreviation for “Gruppe-24”, was designed to introduce new members to the Porsche Club and to provide the opportunity to meet other new members by participating in newmember-only tours and breakfasts. (A new member is defined as a person who has joined the Club within the past two years.) Simultaneously, the membership director (me) organized New Member Tours, ending with a picnic at a winery, where experienced club members described the wide variety of events the club hosts each year.

are free for the new member and a guest on their first tour. Usually held early in the year. Observer Track Day. Goal: Introduce new members to track driving. Many new Porsche owners aren’t aware they can drive on professional race tracks. At the track, new members will receive a short introductory talk describing the track and track driving techniques, sit in on a download session and take a walking track tour to various observation points. With the approval of the Drivers’ Education Director, new members will take a slow parade lap during the drivers’ and track workers’ lunch break. New members will provide their own lunch (bring or buy at Thunderhill’s cafeteria). Thunderhill is the best choice due to ease of access and newer, well-maintained facilities. Leave Sacramento about 8:00, arrive at TH at 10:00. The tour ends at the entrance to the track. Fee $5.00.

Starting in 2010, the G-24 and New Member Tours will be combined to form the New Member Group, chaired by Lee Deter (lee@deter.com). We’ve also greatly increased the range of newmember-only events to include visits to Thunderhill Raceway, wine tours, Autocross events and auto museum visits, to name just a few. New Member events will be announced in the Drifter newsletter, the bi-monthly event schedule and via email. Dan Rowland and Doug Klein will be Lee’s assistants. Resolution Autocross. January Membership Report by Doug Klein, Membership Director

We have 572 regular members, 466 affiliate members and 6 dual members for a total of 1,044 club members, an increase of 5 compared to last month. Seven of our twelve new members transferred from other regions, two from the California Inland region (east of Los Angeles), two from the California Central Coast region (Ventura through Santa Barbara), two from the Sierra Nevada Region (east of Yuba, Donner and Carson passes through Nevada) and one from the San Diego region. Since January our membership count is down by only 2.2%, a minimal amount considering the economy over the past several years, and a testimonial of Porsche owners’ fondness for their cars and their Porsche friends.

The Porsche Club of America (PCA) mails a membership renewal invoice 45 days before your membership expires. To avoid expiration of your membership, it’s important to renew before the end of the month in which your membership expires. To determine your expiration date, check your membership card or the mailing label of the envelope in which your Panorama arrives. Your membership number also contains your anniversary date: the first four digits are the year, and the second two are the month you joined PCA. The easiest way to renew is online at www.pca.org.
