Cookie Crumb’s

by Yvonne “Cookie” Anderson, 2010 SVR President On February 4th we had our planning meeting with 45 attending. Our meeting was quite a success filling in many empty dates on the calendar. We have just a few open places so if you are interested in doing a dinner or tour contact Rik Larson your Vice President to see if your date is available. I was surprised to see many old faces but no new faces? Where are you new members??? We would like to see tours planned for June, July, August and September months. These are the months that are left open and no activities planned.

We are also looking for a Goodie Store person to fill Tom Sisson’s place. For now I have taken over the Goodie Store but would like to give it to someone that would do a good job selling and ordering our merchandise for SVR. I would like to thank Dave and Kaye Mitchell for putting on February Dinner at the Whitney Oaks Gold Club in Rocklin. The location was good and food was excellent. Great Job!

Susan Duvall-Serota is planning the 2nd annual Rib Cook off again in 2010. So you chef ’s get your BBQ’s and recipes ready for June 5th. We will be having it at my house again, so if weather is nice bring a suit and beach towel for swimming. Jerry Cupler will be putting on another Poker Run. The Poker Run will be another interesting route with many questions along the way. Watch for the flyer and mark your calendar for May 16th.

Drifting Back – March 2010 by Larry Wilson

30 Years Ago (March 1980)

SVR member Hank Feenstra put a For Sale ad in the March DRIFTER listing his E-Production race car, a 1958 356A Speedster, and two race engines, each 145hp, for sale. $4,500 for the rolling chassis, and $4,500 each for the two engines. What-a-buy!! Maybe he still has ‘em -- call 916-484-6450. At the March 13 board meeting Pat and Larry Wilson announced SVR had 131 entries, 33 from SVR, to CRAB NINE, April 11-13. More were expected. President Rik Larson reported the club’s net balance amounted to about $2,300. Rik asked all board members to prepare information that could be used to develop duty statements for the various board positions and to update the club’s policy guidelines. Dwight Mitchell was constructing a new Dummkopf award which would be ready soon. A usually reliable, inside informant, said it would be battery-powered.

finishers included Don Rasmusson and Robert Vandeberg, Jan and Herb Hoover, Curtis Cleary and Nikki Duncan, and Bob Dennison and Elizabeth Carr.

10 Years Ago (March 2000)

Eleven SVR members enjoyed the March 12 Railroad Museum Tour with SVR-member Phil Lawrence as our resident docent, first giving us the scoop on Theodore Judah and his search for a railroad pass through the Sierra, then an explanation of narrow and standard gauge tracks and equipment. Then, Phil treated the group to Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg’s private railway car, “The Gold Coast.” The coalburning fireplace and crystal chandelier blew ‘em away. After three hours of brain-bending education, the group adjourned to their favorite watering hole in Old Sacramento.

On March 15, seven cars from SVR (including Al and Kathy King, Harvey Cain and Connie Farlinger, Rik and Lettie Larson, and Pat and Larry Wilson), motored to Manteca to join 54 cars, led by Mike Lommatzsch, from Golden Gate Region on their annual two-day tour to Yosemite Park. Included in the GGR bunch was John Meunier, President of SVR in 1972. John reminded those from SVR that the red 356A Speedster he was driving that day was the same one pictured on the SVR logo. Its license plate read, “Old Shoe.” On March 18, Tom Sisson treated 27 new SVR members to a day at the Towe Auto Museum which included an indoor picnic lunch followed by a docent-led tour of the museum. 20 Years Ago (March 1990) The exhibits such as the Blacksmith Shop and Vic’s Drive-In SVR’s March 15 dinner meeting at Vince’s Trattoria restau- were especially interesting for the group. rant on Folsom Blvd. was an extra special evening because our president, Sally Boeck, had this idea, “Let’s do some- On Wednesday night, March 29, twenty-four SVR members thing special to recognize SVR members who receive their and prospectives arrived at Bob Peake’s house to test 12 20-year PCA membership certificate.” And, special it was. different wines from Schug, Carneros, Gundlach-Bunschu, Members who joined PCA in 1969 and thus in 1989 quali- Vigel, Castle, and Bella Vignia. In the March DRIFTER was Rik Larson’s account of Yosemite Sam, The Rally. Held January 19, this Zone 7 series rally put on by SVR and written by Ray Seamans “Yosemite Sam” (another rallyist nick-name) spanned 65 miles and five check-points to the finish in a pizza parlor in Rancho Cordova where the scores were tallied and announced. The top PCA team of Harv and Connie Cain had the Expert Unequipped class-winning score of 180 points. The team with the biggest score of 1,648 points (in rallying, big is not good) was Jim McMahen and Suzanne Gallicho. Other SVR the drifter

Annual Event Planning Meeting Follow-up by Rik Larson, Vice President

Thanks to everyone who attended the meeting and volunteered to chair an event (or two). We have monthly dinners planned thru March 2011 with the exception of November. We welcome your ideas for this last outstanding item on our calendar for 2010. Contact Helen Ashuckian, Social Director, with your ideas. We have a number of new and unique events: the muffler tour and tech session in April by Roger Walker, an iron pot dinner and tour by Ron and Bente Riley in August, and an Octoberfest event by Andy and Dianna Leight in October. Two tours have been added to the SVR Zone 7 Concours weekend in June. There are a couple of other tours that may appear on the calendar. And possibly a mid-week tour (or two) during the summer. Stay tuned. Events can be added at any time...........just contact the Social or Competition Director for coordination. The SVR calendar is kept current on the SVR web site by John Murphy and includes events that are part of the Zone 7 Competition Series for Concours, AX, and Rally. SVR events will also be available on the PCA national web site (www.pca.org) home page. You can view event information without logging on. And look for an announcement from PCA National where you be able to see what is going on by using a new iPhone app. Of course it means that each region has to calendar their events using the national web site calendar function.

911 GT3 R Hybrid to World Debut in Geneva Porsche Intelligent Performance to make Race Cars even More Efficient ATLANTA - February 11, 2010 - 110 years after Ferdinand Porsche developed the world’s first hybrid, the Lohner-Porsche, Porsche engineers are now expanding this visionary drive concept with a production-based GT race car: Over the past 45 years, Porsche 911 race cars have recorded more than 20,000 victories and on March 4, a Porsche 911 GT3 featuring an innovative hybrid drive will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, opening a new chapter in the history of Porsche.

This innovative hybrid technology has been developed especially for racing, differentiating itself from conventional hybrid systems by way of its configuration and components. In the case of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, the front axle features two electric motors, each developing 60 kW and supplement the 480 hp, naturally aspirated four-liter flat-six that drives the rear wheels. Instead of the heavy batteries usually found in a hybrid road car, an electrical flywheel power generator is installed inside next to the driver delivering energy to the electric motors. The flywheel generator is also an electric motor, with its rotor spinning at speeds of up to 40,000 rpm while mechanically storing energy. The flywheel generator is charged whenever the driver applies the brakes, as the two front axle electric motors reverse their role and act as generators. Then, when accelerating out of a bend or while overtaking, the driver can use the extra energy 8

from the charged flywheel generator, sending up to 120 kW of stored kinetic energy to the motors. This additional power is available after each charge for approximately six to eight seconds. Energy formerly converted into heat upon each brake application, and therefore wasted, is now converted into additional drive power in a very efficient manner. In addition to increasing available drive power, depending on racing conditions, the hybrid drive can also be called upon to save fuel. By increasing the efficiency and, accordingly, the performance of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, reductions can be made to the weight of the fuel tank or the car can make less frequent pit stops, for example.

After its debut in Geneva, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid will be tested in long-distance races on the Nürburgring. The highlight of this test program will be the 24 Hours on the Nordschleife of Nürburgring, May 15-16, 2010. The focus is not on the 911 GT3 R Hybrid winning the race, but rather spearheading technology as a “racing lab.” The intent is to provide hands-on know-how for the subsequent use of hybrid technology in road-going sports cars. The 911 GT3 R Hybrid is a perfect example of the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy, a principle to be found in every Porsche: More power on less fuel, more efficiency and lower CO2 emissions - on the track and on the road. ### Photos: 911 GT3 R Hybrid to World Debut in Geneva Courtesy of Porsche Cars North America, Inc the drifter

Tech Article: Brake dust & racing pads by Jim Kinnicutt, SVR Technical Chair

Hello to all. I was cut a bit short this month as I was gone for the majority of it. I also did not receive any questions this month! You all must be hibernating! Since we talked about tires in the last couple of articles, I looked for and found a short piece on brake dust in the newly formatted PCA website that I thought might be interesting. Re-print from PCA.org website brake dust/racing pads Exterior/Interior | Wheels Vehicle Information: Model: 964 cup; Year: 1991; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 16000; I realize it’s probably futile but....do you have any suggestions for waxes or coatings that may help prevent the hot brake pad dust and material from burning into my rims? I am using racing pads (PFC 97 compound) and I noticed I now have some pock marks on my new rims! Any suggestions? Brant Giere [NOO] 2/28/2005 1:59:40 PM If you have stock painted Cup wheels I would polish and wax them with P 21S Paint cleanser and carnuba wax. This will stop the brake dust from sticking to the surface. John Paterek - PCA WebSite - 2/28/2005 John Paterek John Paterek [NNJ] 2/28/2005 8:17:15 PM

Notice the new eMail, you know, to send in those ideas for articles or questions! technical@svr.pca.org NOTICE elsewhere in this copy of the Drifter you will find special discounts at Niello’s !! Happy motoring… Jim

The February Dinner

by Dave and Kaye Mitchell Photos by Cookie Anderson The February dinner took place at the Whitney Oaks Golf Course in Rocklin. Helen Ashuckian was one of the first of thirty-two people to arrive. The simple dinner was enjoyed by all in a large room overlooking a pond between the 9th and 18th holes. It made some of us wish for longer, warmer days. It could be a venue used again since it can accommodate a large crowd easily.

New members, Mary and Sam McPherson along with Bob Bunnell and Angie Boyd, were introduced and welcomed by our membership director Doug Klein. Jim and Linda McMahen ran Share-The-Wealth this month for the Hoovers. They ensured everyone liked what they got. Dan and Claudia Rowland won a Carrera GT and Susan Duvall-Serota was tickled pink when her ticket was picked for the red tulips with chocolates. Susan was also one of many to win a bottle of wine, so she will be sure to enjoy Valentine’s Day.

GOODIE STORE by Cookie Anderson, SVR Goodiestorekeeper

T

his month is St Paddy’s Day and for those that are Irish it is called St Patrick’s day. The Goodie Store has many sweatshirts for sale in green, red, blue and black. If you’re looking for something to keep you warm on these windy days give me a call 916-988-6534. Dedicated to the Irish & Irish at Heart all around the World St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by the Irish and Irish at Heart in big cities and small towns alike with parades, “wearing of the green,” music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. It’s a time for fun. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

LE PETITE PARIS…. by Tom Sisson, SVR Member Did you know that with a little luck, you can visit a small part of Paris and have a great French meal, right here in Rocklin? The restaurant is called Bistro McFlores and is run by three excellent Chefs—Chef Jimmy (McDade), Chef Sheila (McDade) and Chef Barbie (Flores) and it is all done for charity. At an event called the Sacramento Valley Region-PCA Charity Auction, David Hoffman, Susan Duvall-Serota, Darlene Byerley, and I bid on a full French dinner put on by the famous Chefs mentioned above. And we won! Now, David and Susan had also won the dinner the prior year and had some idea of what would happen. Darlene and I were virgins (I use the word advisedly) and didn’t know what would take place. First we received a welcoming invitation in the mail. We anxiously arrived at Bistro McFlores and were met by a sign on the door that did in fact confirm that this door was about to whisk us off to gay Paris. The door was opened by a fetching lass in black and white waiters garb complete with bow tie. She was shortly joined by another fetching lass and a dapper gentleman who were similarly dressed! French music was playing in the background as we were led to the kitchen which was decorated with French touches and many tempting hors d’oeuvres. There were cornichons, Brie

and crackers, two types of pate and house-roasted almonds. And wines, many wines, some of which have never been seen outside of France before. It was a beautiful sight for hungry eyes! The counter even had a Citroen 2CV model adorning it. After eating our fill of the wonderful hors d’oeuvres, we were summoned to dinner and given quite attractive menus letting us know what we were about to receive. Our host and hostesses were so friendly and helpful that we invited them to eat with us at the table. The table decorations were wonderful and innovative, including a scale model of the Eiffel Tower, placeholders made from wine corks, a small French Chef pedaling a bicycle with a large wine bottle in the back, and two pretty French pigs! And more bottles of wine! The meal started with En Crout Soupe Crème de Tomate (Cream of Tomato soup with a puff pastry crust.) The entrée was *Boeuf Parisienne-known to the hoi polloi as gourmet Chef Jimmy’s world famous fillet of beef roast with cream sauce *Haricots Vert avec de amandes grilles –tasty Chef Barbie’s Quite Tasty Green Beans with toasted almonds *Gratin Savoyard-excellent Chef Sheila’s Most Excellent scalloped potatoes. Next, in true French manner, came the salad-Vivant salade de Laitue (Living Butter Lettuce dressed with French Vinaigrette). And, of course, more fine wines. The dessert was Mousse au chocolat avec Chantilly Crème (Chocolate Mousse with freshly whipped cream). All in all, a meal fit for Kings and Queens. The ladies were even presented with attractive necklaces with the Eiffel Tower on them. And, once again, more wine! Our advice—come to the next charity auction prepared to bid long and well for this meal package. Our many thanks to our host and hostesses for a job superbly done. They wouldn’t even let us tip them!

Third Annual Visit to the LA Auto Show by Dan Rowland and Bill Keegan

Our third annual visit to the LA Auto Show using our “press passes” was quite different from the previous two. Past experiences led to a more focused plan and a more pleasurable two days. The normal program is a scheduled visit to each marque for a 15 to 40 minute media presentation. The push and pull of trying to see everything is hectic, to say the least, and this year gave way to a more organized approach limited to getting the best benefit from each of the venues we chose to attend. We used our time well and got great close-up views of BMW, AUDI, Mercedes, Spyker, Bentley, Lexus LFA, Mini , the BIG Ford and Dodge trucks, etc… without the crowds.

Instead of traveling with the herd of journalists between each of the scheduled press releases we picked our interests and got the better seats each venue by being early for our selected presentations. What this did for us was get us second row seats (behind the reserved seats for the big name suits from Porsche AG) for the world introduction of the new Boxster Spyder. And grand it was too—the traditional hazy smoke on the long raised entry gantry, sparkling lights, full turntable at the end plus a dedicated live musician (very good and very loud) keeping time to the background video of the Spyder tearing up the closed circuit road course. Convinced me on the spot we NEED this car.

The color variation with the red accent was not as overpowering as most of the previous release and magazine pictures have shown. Looks great up close. GT Silver and Cocoa interior and top looked great together. Note the new wheels for the turbo.

While the Spyder is a lightened (2811#) stripped down version of the Boxster with more HP (320HP) the seats were the new lightweight folding carbon fiber racing configuration we would all love to have. At $4000.00 each they add significantly to the Spyder base price of $61,200.

We were able to get close up one on one Q&A with a Spyder “specialist” able to answer many questions about the car. Top up—top down etc. Many of us got this same opportunity at the Christmas Party at Niello. Of great interest also was the European version of the GT3RS and the Turbo Cabriolet at the press release.

We were able to view up close all the models, from what is pictured to all the Boxsters, Caymans, Carreras, Cayennes and Panameras. Many new great configurations and color combinations – over 20 cars in all. It was great fun and we look forward to next year.
