THE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN ROD HERSBERGER There are many reasons people want to live in California. The weather, the scenic beauty, the bountiful produce and meat and fish, the beaches, and so forth are among the attractions. For us Porsche owners, though, the car culture must rank near the top. From early hot rodders to supercars, Southern California has it all. Having just returned from my fourth Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca, where else are you going to see 1,000 Porsches gathered in one place. Furthermore, only at the Petersen

Board of Directors Meetings SBR’s Board of Directors meets on the second Wednesday of every odd-numbered month beginning at 6:30 p.m. At this time, the meetings are held online via Zoom. Member attendance and participation are encouraged. Contact SBR president Rod Hersberger (rodhersberger@gmail.com) to receive the Zoom link for each meeting. Board meeting minutes are posted on the SBR website as well: www. pcasb.org/#clubnews.

are you going to see a changing display of cars celebrating Porsche’s 75th anniversary, a recognition of 30 years of Boxster production that drew 230 cars to a cruise-in in July, and a celebration in August of the 911’s 60th anniversary of its unveiling at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1963. Then there are the other public and private museums, the various car shows, and a host of Cars & Coffees to choose from, as well as Super Car Sunday. The car culture is indeed a major reason we live here. Getting back to Rennsport, what a fabulous event it was again. Even rain on the Saturday did not keep the crowds from showing up. You can read an article on infield action in this issue and on the track in the January 2024 edition.

Our club has two events still this year. The first is a visit to the Nethercutt Museum on November 9 and then our annual holiday brunch at the Spanish Hills Country Club, Camarillo, on December 10. If you are interested in planning a future drive or event, contact Lionel Neff at zuma13@msn.com. It has been a pleasure serving as your president these past four years. We weathered the pandemic and our membership and finances remain strong. We have a cohesive board that shares the workload. Our monthly events are the envy of most other clubs. Our Der Auspuff editor Dennis Power produces one of the finest magazines anywhere. It has been a good four years. I will still be around as past president.

Organize an Event, The Santa Barbara Region is well known for the excellent drives we put on. Being blessed with magnificent scenery and many great backroads does not hurt either! Yet there are new roads to travel and places to explore. We want to expand our cadre of tour leaders to tap some new ideas. It is time for an SUV-only drive in places comfortable for four-wheel-drive vehicles. We are also thinking about an aircooled-only drive of 1977 cars and earlier—any model in the time frame. If you are interested in organizing one of these, or something else, contact, co-Activities Chair Lionel Neff at zuma13@msn.com. Good advice and assistance based on past experience are available.

DER AUSPUFF November/December 2023

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK DENNIS POWER In this edition of the magazine I have the good fortune to write about my time at Rennsport Reunion 7. As expected, there was an overwhelming number of cars from Porsche’s racing history, with too many internal manufacturer’s numbers to keep them all straight. I was, however, especially looking forward to seeing the concept cars to be shown. One was the Mission X and the other the 357. If you’ve been keeping up with the reports about the release of the Mission X, you’ll know it is a visionary look at the future of the hypercar: a lightweight, all-electric vehicle with a power-to-weight ratio of 1:1, which would make it one of the most powerful and agile cars ever built. To get this way it uses a centrally mounted battery pack that provides a low center of gravity and optimal weight distribution. There are four electric motors that power each wheel independently,

providing all-wheel drive and torque vectoring capabilities. The lightweight carbon fiber body reduces weight and improves performance, and the sleek and aerodynamic design maximizes downforce and efficiency. The Mission X has big ramifications for the company. It is a sign that Porsche is serious about developing electric vehicles and key features like the carbon fiber body and all-wheel drive electric powertrain could be incorporated in future production models, such as the next generation 911. It demonstrates, again, Porsche’s commitment to innovation and the vision for the future of the hypercar.

The Porsche 357 concept, on the other hand, is a modern interpretation of the iconic 356 sports car. It also features a sleek and aerodynamic design with a number of key features that hint at the future of Porsche: a fully electric powertrain with a single

motor mounted on the rear axle; lightweight construction with materials such as carbon fiber and aluminum; and advanced technologies, including heads-up display, a digital instrument cluster, and a variety of assistance systems. The car will have a power-toweight ratio of 1:1, making it also one of the most powerful and agile electric vehicles ever built. As with the Mission X, the 357 concept is a significant development for Porsche. It represents the company’s vision for the future of the sports car and shows that the company is committed to developing electric vehicles that are not only powerful and agile, but also stylish and desirable. The 357 concept could be a precursor to a future production model. Porsche has already stated that it is planning to launch its first fully electric sports car, the 718, in 2025. I saw nothing I didn’t like in the Mission X. As for the 357, I like it a lot, but for many the design details in its execution will take some getting used to. While the silhouette of the 357 is reminiscent of the 356, the rest of the execution is somewhat of a departure from Porsche DNA. Both concepts are stunning in their ways and represent the best of Porsche’s design and engineering capabilities. They are also a sign of the company’s commitment to the future.

The Wrong Way to Wrightwood

T

12

Story by Lionel Neff

he morning of August 16 was cool with scattered clouds. The alarm went off and with the precision of a Le Mans start Dori and I prepared ourselves for the promised excitement in the day ahead. We arrived at the Moorpark Target parking lot (aka the launch site) thinking we would be the first there. How wrong we were, for the “go-getters” Nick Liakas, Doreen Pankow, Bob Clark, Keith Archambeau, and a host of others, were already on site, imbued with enthusiasm for the day that lay ahead. The pre-ride talk was given ten minutes before our planned 9:30 a.m. departure. There were 35 participants and 20 cars, so the decision was made to divide into two groups. I would lead the first group while Doreen Pankow, being the skilled driver she is, would lead the second.

DER AUSPUFF November/December 2023

On time, off went the first group headed east on New Los Angeles Ave. toward Hwy 23, then to Hwy 118 in mild traffic, which a mid-week drive affords. Our anticipated appointment with adventure begins. From Hwy 118 we transitioned onto Hwy 210 east. At the 35-mile marker, we exited the highway at Sunland Blvd. still together and in formation. The ribbon of Porsches made its way to Oro Vista Ave., our gateway to Big Tujunga Canyon, at which point we pulled to the side of the road to allow the procession of Porsches to reform the ribbon. Here’s where the fun began. Ahead lay the open road fraught with fast, sweeper turns accented with tight twisties. Not for the faint of heart, yet not a challenge for our lofty Porsches and their deft drivers.

The curves that lay ahead, coupled with a pace set on the fringe of pure passion, brought a smile to everyone’s face. The allure of the road through Big Tujunga Canyon came to an end at the junction with Angeles Forest Hwy. The original plan was to proceed south to Angeles Crest Hwy. However, you know what’s said about the best-laid plans. Angeles Crest was closed due to the severe damage incurred during the continuous rains last winter. Therefore, Plan B was implemented wherein Angeles Forest Hwy North was the substitute route. This was not a disapointment. The curves that lay ahead, coupled with a pace set on the fringe of pure passion, brought a smile to everyone’s face. The excitement continued until reaching the 65-mile point at the turn-off for Mt. Emma Rd., where the contour of the route changed in midstream.

The route here transitioned to miles of brisk, speedy, sweeping curves over the Sonoran biome. At the 75-mile point, we found our road had flowed into Fort Tejon Rd., where the curves again were coming alive as was our quest for more. At the 82-mile point, our anticipation and hopes for more excitement were teased with what Valyermo Rd. had in store for us. At the 96-mile point, we were deftly guided to Big Pine Rd. where tight, irrational, palpitating, and tighter-than-expected curves, added to our glee. The landscape changed to pine forest. Though challenging, the road once again was to be defeated by Porsche’s unmatched road-handling attributes while piloted by their skilled drivers.

What a marvel. We were at the summit as we entered the last stretch of road to Wrightwood. The mountain town sits at an elevation of 6,000 feet in the San Bernardino Mountains and has a population of about 4,600. The ribbon of Porsches proceeded to our destination, the Grizzly Café. The journey had been 101 miles. Little did we know how lucky we were until told by a waitress that earlier that morning a heavy rain had descended on the area. Fortunately, we had arrived to blue skies and

warm conditions. It had been a wonderful drive and we looked forward now to a hearty lunch. The meals were wonderful, as was the service, only to be exceeded by the close fellowship shared amongst our members. A special thanks to everyone who participated in this great event: a tribute to what a wonderful club we are. Lionel Neff has been a member of PCA since 2020 and is SBR’s Activities Co-chair. He drives a 2017 911 Turbo in GT Silver.

Editor’s footnote: How could this be the “wrong way” to Wrightwood, when the drive for Porsche Club members was engaging, enjoyable, and perfect for what our cars were engineered to do? Well, the “wrong way” comes in because these roads were not the way your friendly, driving-directions app would have you go. This adventurous route had been carefully planned out by our author. Thank you Lionel! November/December 2023

his year’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion chose Corvette as its featured marque to honor Corvette’s 70th anniversary. Held annually in August at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca during Monterey Car Week, the event still has something for every car enthusiast. It was disappointing that Rolex Reunion didn’t choose to honor Porsche’s 75th year, but we can’t win them all. Fortunately, celebrating our favorite is what Rennsport Reunion is for and that gathering was coming up soon at the same track. Even though Porsche wasn’t the featured marque there were plenty of Porsches to be seen in the paddock, along with a wide variety of race cars like Can-Am, F5000, and F1 on the race track. It was exciting to see so many eras of Porsches, from a 1960 RS 60 Spyder, 1961 Abarth Carrera, 1969 Porsche 917PA, RSRs, 935s, 962s, and a 2006 Riley Porsche DP Mark X1, to name a few.

DER AUSPUFF November/December 2023

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion brings together historic race cars that “are accepted based on the car’s authenticity, race provenance, and period correctness.” Always enjoyable is the “Ragtime Racers” that features the earliest models of which the 1908 Locomobile Model “I” was the earliest of them all. If you’re lucky, you can see the “Ragtime Racers” put together a working vehicle from parts and pieces to a fully assembled and running car in minutes (in one case, 8 minutes to be exact!). If you made the event this year there was a lot to see. If not, there is always 2024 when it kicks off on Friday, August 9, with festivities through Sunday, the 18th. Being Monterey Car Week, book your lodging early! Robert Watt has been a member of PCA since 2009. He drives a concours-winning 2008 Cayman in Speed Yellow.

o media pass this year: I was deeply disappointed. Although applying for media credentials as soon as the application window opened last spring, I was denied this time. There went the opportunity to be trackside, inside the chain link fencing, and get closeups of the cars and drivers in action. I had a media pass in the past for historic races at Laguna Seca. I called the communications manager to appeal my case, explaining, as I had in my application, that as editor of a regional Porsche Club magazine we’d planned to include a story. “That explains it,” I was told. Requests such as this were turned down by Porsche. That would be PCNA and, if true, it may be they wanted to control what was written in Porsche magazines. But, whatever the reason, it definitely turned out for the best! Steve Geldman, one of Santa Barbara Region’s premier motorsports photographers, DID get a media pass. As a result, the trackside images we will feature in Part 2 of this story well be better than I

could have captured and we can show more of them. The current edition of the magazine will feature the infield, garages, paddocks, and the crowds. The first “icon” I ran into was Patrick Long, here with his family. Patrick makes his home in Westlake Village (our region!). At Rennsport Reunion 7, Long served as one of the co-Grand Marshals. He also competed in several races, including the Weissach Group in the 1977 Interscope 934.5 (the sister 1979 935 is pictured on the following page). Other races were the Stuttgart Cup in the 1988 962 C Leyton House, the Werks Trophy in a 1964 904, and in the Eifel Trophy in a 1928 911 T/R. You may have heard of Long in other capacities. He is a successful businessman and entrepreneur, the co-founder of Luftgekühlt, a popular aircooled Porsche festival, and has his own line of racing apparel and merchandise. Long is a true Porsche ambassador. He represents the best of the brand, both on and off the track.

The days following featured parade laps for enthusiasts, Porsche Club Racing, and various races of classes intended to group cars according to their heritage: the Gmünd Cup (550, RS60, 904, and 356), the Eifel Trophy (914 and 911 up to 2.5 liters), the Weissach Cup (3.0 RSR, 2.1 Turbo, 934, 935, 936, 924 GRTS and GTR, and 911 over 2.5 liters), the Werks Trophy (904, 906, 910, 907, 908, 909, and 917), the Flacht Cup (964, 993, 996 GT, and 997 GT), and the Stuttgart Cup (956, 962, GT1, WSC, and RSS Spyder). There was also a very competitive Porsche Carrera Cup North America race for 992 GT3 Cup

cars. Other on-track activities included a GT Exhibition and ePerformance Highlights. Stunning displays, opportunities to meet personalities, and autograph sessions took place in the infield. Mainstage features included interviews, Porsche in Art and Porsche in Photography presentations, an Exclusive Manufaktur Design Talk about Colors of Porsche, and, I especially liked, the Driven by Design presentation: “You dream it, we build it.” They were long days filled with rich experiences. Drivers and enthusiasts had gathered to celebrate racing and pay tribute to the people and cars that have helped build the Porsche legacy.

There’s more to come. With Steve Geldman’s fine photography in the forthcoming January/February edition of Der Auspuff, we’ll get to see what it was like on the iconic Laguna Seca track. Whether in the paddocks or on the track, it can easily be said that Rennsport Reunion 7 was a successful celebration of the Porsche community. It was a chance for fans to come together and share their respect for the brand, and to meet the drivers and engineers who have made Porsche one of the most successful racing marques in the world. What’s Trending in the Porsche Auction Market Report by David K. Whitlock

O

verall, the Porsche market rebounded from a poor August to the levels we saw in July with a 71% sellthrough rate, producing $31,018,453 off 595 vehicles offered for sale. However, some markets did better than others, as the 992 market continued to soften. Of the five 992 GT3s to cross the block, three found homes, and not a single unit was bid over $300,000, including a lone GT3 Touring 6-speed. Winged cars struggled as we saw the lowest bid on record of $218,000 for a 2022 GT3 6-Speed finished in Paint to Sample Linden Green with a host of CXX options and only 1,000 miles; it failed to sell. On the non-GT front, we saw a well-optioned 2022 1991 Carrera S Coupe with a 7-speed and sticker of $167,000 sell for $151,000, showing that 911s are starting to trade below MSRP more regularly. Another market that has continued to soften this month is the Boxster Spyder, with the biggest surprise being a 900-mile 2022 718 Boxster Spyder that sold for $115,000, making it the lowest sub-1,000-mile Spyder we’ve seen to date. Following that trend, we saw another sub-1k 718 Spyder fail to sell at a high bid of $114,500. 964 Carrera RS also had a rough go of it, with a rare Rubystone N/GT example failing to sell at a high bid of $282,000. Earlier this year, we saw a five-year high for a Rubystone N/GT at $401,000, so to see this example fall so short was rather disappointing. Adding to the disappointment was another 964 Carrera RS that failed to sell at a high bid of only $153,000. These no sales were more affected by the quality of the cars offered than an overall market decline, as one had paintwork and no records, and the other had an accident history and was located in Germany. But it wasn’t all doom and gloom as several cars reached twelve-month and five-year highs. At $127,000, we had a Guards Red 1990 911 Carrera 2 Targa 5-speed achieve a twelve-month high due to its remarkable condition and only 16,963 miles. We also had another superb Targa reach a fiveyear high with a 1970 911E Targa with all original paint, original interior, matching numbers, and fully documented mileage hit $153,000.

26

DER AUSPUFF November/December 2023

The two most surprising sales of the month came from models we don’t typically see on these pages. The first was a 1979 928 5-speed refinished in Minerva Blue Metallic over Black leather with Pasha-style seat inserts. The stunning color combination and a recent refurbishment by a marque expert produced a $100,000 sale, a far cry from the $30,000 928s we see on our typical auction day. The other was a 1974 914 2.0 in Signal Orange over Brown equipped with the Appearance Group Package, 15” Fuchs alloy wheels, and a Stoddard muffler. This example finished in an interesting color combination and in original condition, brought a new twelve-month high of $64,000. While not a terrible month, many markets were still far from their spring season numbers. I believe we’ll see the new cars continue to soften through the fall and into next year while some of our classic models, like the 356 and 993, start to even out and most likely pop back up come next spring. Only time will tell. Happy bidding. David K. Whitlock is a writer for The Stuttgart Market Letter, a daily market update for Porschephiles, by Porschephiles, delivered free to your inbox. Santa Barbara Auto Group’s Annual Oktoberfest

Porsche Cayenne Launch Event Text by Dennis Power Photos by Bill Hallier

A

t dusk, on a fine Santa Barbara day, at the beautiful Sandpiper Golf Course, Santa Barbara Auto Group hosted an event to showcase the new Porsche Cayenne. Three were on display with information on the special features: one in gray, another in black, and Cayenne S in white. All got plenty of views. What is an Oktoberfest without draft beers and bratwurst. But that was just part. Also for guests was a selection of wines and a full buffet. A properly costumed DJ played the music. We are fortunate that Sandpiper Golf Course is open to having Porsches parked on the green, but out of the way of errant golf balls. Members of the Santa Barbara Region were very happy to be invited to this special event.

The Nethercutt Collection

Thursday, November 9, 2023 In 1923, J. B. Nethercutt moved from South Bend, Indiana, to live in Santa Monica with his aunt (the founder of Merle Norman Cosmetics). His love of cars began in 1956 and with resources at hand his collection grew. It is colossal today. SBR’s November event is a guided tour of the extraordinary Nethercutt Collection, an extensive assemblage of absolutely dazzling automotive treasures. We meet at the Moorpark Target parking lot at 8:15 a.m., depart at 8:45, and arrive by 9:30 at The Collection in Sylmar (15151 Bledsoe St.). If the twohour guided tour isn’t enough, walk across the street to The Nethercutt Museum for a self-guided tour of a second outstanding collection.

There are a few simple rules they ask us to honor, such as children must be 10 or older and no food or beverages in the exhibit areas. The meeting location and more details will be sent to registrants. Register at msreg.com/nethercutt. The cost is $22 per person, including the SBR activity fee. For questions about the event contact Steve Geldman at imagerep@gmail.com. For questions about registration contact Art Shinn at artshinn@gmail.com.
