PCACS Goes Bonkers for Book Week

!Sharon Kemboi Book Week was celebrated at PCACS in Week 6. Book Week aims to inspire a love of reading in young people. This year’s Book Week theme is ‘Reading is my Secret Power.’

Dress Up Day is always the highlight of Book Week. Students and teachers dressed up as their favourite book characters on Wednesday 28 August. There were some cool costumes this year. Some notable mentions were Violet Beauregarde, Ariel the mermaid, a NASA Astronaut, the Rainbow Fish, Pippy Longstocking and Gangasta Granny.

One surprise event that students were not expecting occurred during Book Week assembly. The Junior School teachers demonstrated their acting and preforming skills by presenting their very own item.

The teacher’s amazing assembly item introduced us to Nalvana, a young girl who was looking for her superpower. The teachers showed Nalvana (and the students) their awesome super powers. For example, the Year 6 teachers were cooking while Mr Griffin and Mrs Pacey amazed everyone with a little magic!

Two Senior School teachers, Ms Stringer and Ms Russell along with Ms House, read the Dr. Seuss book ‘Oh the Places You’ll Go’ dressed as the Cat in the Hat. Later in the day, students met in the Bush Play Area to read together in buddy classes.

Even though it was a warm afternoon, we enjoyed coming together under the shade of the trees to share our love of all things books.

It was also a great opportunity to talk about our costumes.

PCACS STUDENTS HEAD EAST The Post journalists, George Old and Ryan Rawlinson, joined 32 other PCACS students on the 2019 Canberra Tour in July. Below, they share their experiences.

SYDNEY !Ryan Rawlinson JULY 7: After lurching out of bed at 2.30am, 34 excited students and 7 brave teachers headed to Perth Domestic Terminal to leave for Sydney. We said goodbye to our parents, snapped a quick pic and headed through security. I managed to pick a fight with a vending machine to get a packet of sweets, which was not the best start. We finally boarded the plane (sweets in hand) for the long, four hour trip.

Some fog managed to delay our flight. I was wide awake the whole time until we arrived in Sydney and then, my tiredness set in, but I was able to appreciate the view as we landed. We grabbed our suitcases, hopped on the tour bus and went straight to Sydney Tower. It is the second tallest observation deck in the Southern Hemisphere being 250m above the ground with breathtaking views of the whole city.

After spending an hour or so there, we set off to our motel, located in an area called The Rocks. We could see Sydney Harbour, the Bridge and the Opera House. We unpacked, called family and relaxed in the motel’s games room. But, we were not able to chill for too long as the teachers said that we were off to walk to the bridge and the markets. We ate the most amazing pork buns and ended the day watching the sun set over the harbor.

The next day, we headed off to the Sydney Opera House. We took photos, walked around a bit and met our tour guide who gave us headphones to make sure that we could hear her. We walked into the “sails” and I was surprised to see purple carpet! We viewed two theatres, one with the largest set of chimes in the world. We discovered that the Sydney Opera House wasn’t designed by an Australian but, a man from Denmark named Jørn Utzon. We walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and after the 2.5km walk, we boarded the tour bus to Taronga Zoo. My favourite spot at Taronga Zoo was behind the elephant and bird aviary. There was nobody there and not only did it have views of the zoo, but also the entire Sydney skyline.

We left the zoo and met our coach driver, Mark, to embark on our three-hour drive to Canberra. Halfway through our journey, we stopped off at McDonald’s and ordered 41 soft serve cones! We finally arrived in Canberra and soon fell asleep. I dreamed about my Sydney experiences and couldn’t wait to see what was planned for tomorrow in our nation’s capital!

CANBERRA !George Old JULY 9: We woke up to a cold and cloudy Canberra day, but that didn’t stop us from looking forward to the exiting days ahead. Our fist stop was going to be Parliament House.

We were treated to a full tour of Parliament House, which included the House of Representatives and the Senate chambers. All students were involved in role-play about a dam being built in Tasmania. After our tour, we were transferred to Old Parliament House. While we were there, we received a blessing by an Aboriginal Elder. We visited the Royal Australian Mint and while there, learnt about the origin of the Australian dollar. We also saw a big robot, called Titan, lift blank coins into a machine to stamp them. That night, we went to the Australian National Botanic Gardens.

Our forth day saw us visit the Australian War Memorial. There, we learnt about WW1, WW2 and the Vietnam War. It was very interesting. We also went to the National Electoral Education Museum to learn about the importance of democracy and find out what preferential voting is and how to do it. It can become quite complicated. The last thing on our daily schedule was a trip to Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre. There were amazing robots, cool contraptions and crazy creations. There was even a free fall simulator! By the end of the day, we were almost all broke from all our purchases at the Questacon gift shop. We needed an early night as the next morning, was going to be an early wake up!

5.30am in Canberra can be as cold as ice, but that was nothing as today, we were going to be experiencing -1 degree temperatures; we were going to the snow! It was a three hour bus ride to Perisher ski fields, and we were going to be there for six whole hours. There were blizzard conditions, and the falling snow felt like needles pricking your face.

Everyone had the best time experiencing snow. We even had had a big snowball fight and to warm up again, had a hot chocolate.

Our final day saw us going to the Mount Ainslie look out. We were only there for about three minutes because of the fierce wind conditions. We set back off for Sydney Airport and we arrived back in Perth later that night.

SCIENCE WEEK 2019

ASC Choir Day !Mackenzie Bewetz JULY 31: The Peter Carnley Children’s Choir went to Swan Valley Anglican School to participate in a state choir “learn and sing” that was also going to be recorded.

The choir passed the hour-long bus ride with songs and games. When students finally arrived, they were kindly greeted by Perrie, who would later teach all the songs and dances that the choir needed to learn.

Some warm-ups for our voices and bodies were required and, after a short break for recess, it was time to learning the songs.

Students were separated into 3 groups; alto (low voices), mezzo (medium voices) and soprano (high voices.) Each group sang one of the warm-ups again in a canon.

The first song to learn was ‘Rock Angels’. It was a very upbeat, rock song. It took a little while to learn the song as it was in separate parts, but the choir got there eventually.

After completing ‘Rock Angels,’ students had to learn a short, poem like, song in Latin. It sounded amazing when the three parts were put together.

During a much needed lunch break solo auditions were held for the next song. After the break, singers went back to their original groups and began to learn a traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander song and dance. The Peter Carnley Children’s Choir learnt it quite quickly as they already knew the song and dance.

Once all the participating schools had learnt the songs, each choir got prepared to sing. The cameras started rolling and students started to sing. Each choir sounded angelic.

After a “thank you and goodbye,” the Peter Carnley Children’s Choir returned to school just after the bell. It was a tiring but exciting day had by all.

Year Four students, Isabella and Mia were engrossed while participating in this Science Week experiment.

!Vaanya Agarwal with Mackenzie Bewetz Science Week is a week where Science is celebrated at PCACS. Commencing on Monday 12 August, the Senior School Science Teachers held events at lunch for all students to participate.

Day 1: Rocket launching was held on the oval at lunch. Both Senior and Junior School students could make their own rockets then launch them. Rockets where created using mineral water bottles. Crowds of people came to watch the launching of the rockets, and some even attempted to catch them.

Day 2: Hands on activities were set up for all students to come and participate in. There were many displays such as investigating animal skulls or watching an octopus being dissected.

Day 3: The Science staff demonstrated how cool science is. Students were fascinated while watching Ping-Pong balls float high above a hairdryer. It was so simple, but so mesmerizing.

Day 4: Experiments where held in the Senior School Science Labs. There were many options available such as watching how colours changed in fire and water. Many who went to these demonstrations compared the similarities and differences between the two. Students could also observe a chemical reaction, called ‘Elephant Toothpaste.’

Three substances where combined to create and ever-growing foam. This has some students completely stunned!

Day 5: Students could create their own hot air balloons, or windmill and take home with them. These hands on activities were very popular. During the making of these creations, the students were taught about how hot air balloons and windmills worked.

Science Week has proven to be another highlight of the PCACS calendar! Students can’t wait to see what the Science teachers have up their lab coat sleeves for 2020!

PCACS Loves Chinese! !Hamish Sullivan

PCACS hosted some students from China. They came to PCACS on 5 August.

All Junior School classes hosted a few students.

They participated in most of the lessons and although they didn’t speak that much English, they were very social. It was actually quite impressive. The students had to take some separate English classes while they were here.

Chinese student, Anna, stayed with the Johnson family and spent her time in 5MC. She liked Morning Fitness and Music.

Rain Doesn’t Dampen Dads’ Event !Hannah-Mae Rowse Thanks to the work of our PCACS Parents and Friends Association, on Friday, 30th August, PCACS students and their dads came to school after hours for the Father’s Day Camp Out. Unfortunately, the wild weather took a toll on the camping component, but that didn’t stop all those who attended from having a great time!

The BBQs were fired up while footy matches were played until 6pm.

Delicious sausages were devoured in the Undercover Area and then, it was off to the KLC for a fierce dodge ball competition; the Fathers verses the Kids! As the heavens opened, it was time to head home with no mention of who had actually won.

Many PCACS dads, other significant males and students still had a great time at the PCACS P&F Father’s Day Campout!

This term, Portia-Lee Freeman went investigating to get some answers.

If you could teach any subject, what would it be and why?

If you could add something to the co curricular timetable, what would it be?

NOKU 2W – I would teach ICT because it’s really fun and you can go on the internet.

JYDEN 3M – I would add a Maths activity with 3D shapes and other maths things. We would feel the shapes and guess what they are. We could play math games and stuff in the co curricular class. I think it would be super cool!

CAMERON & ALEXANDER, 2T – We would teach math because there is adding and multiplying. We’d also get to teach time. Math is super fun!

AYLA 3K – I would just be a normal teacher because I just like teaching normal kids.

SHAILEY 5MC – I would add a co curricular club where you could make new or different friends and socialise.

SAHARA 5B – A club could be added where you could teach people how to make balloon animals.

That’d be pretty fun and cool.

EVIE 3P – I would teach English because I think English is very good and we can do spelling.

LILY 4B –I’d be a sport teacher because I like to play netball and stuff like that.

RHYS 4M – I would teach sport because you don’t have to stand in the classroom all day long.

ANON – I’d like there to be book club where you have to read the same book and then get to discuss what you thought about it.

This term, the Student Council has been working hard to make the Junior School extra fun for you!

We have been organising ENVIRO WEEK with events such as a school rubbish audit, Outside Day and the Waste Free Classroom Competition with the winning class being awarded the golden bin.

We are always looking for more ideas to improve our Junior School!

Hannah-Mae Rowse - on behalf of the JS Council

Alyssa’s Talkin’ with Teachers Mrs Alysha McDonald grew up in Rockingham. When she was at school, Mrs McDonald loved art as she could express herself and show others her capabilities. She was on the state basketball team too. After spending some time working at a Vietnamese orphanage, she felt that she was ready to become a teacher.

Mrs McDonald has only worked at PCACS and has taught Year 4 and 5. The students have taught her many things over the last few years.

At the end of the year, Mrs McDonald loves when her students give her cards to say thank you for the year.

She also loves the Year 5 camp, enjoying it just as much as the kids do!

In her spare time, she loves to draw, paint and play the guitar. You may find Mrs McDonald camping as she enjoys the simple things in life.

Mrs Fabiana Padova had a fascinating childhood. She lived in a tourist area of Italy with beautiful mountains and lakes surrounding the town. This allowed Mrs Padova to meet people from many countries. She loved to listen to their conversations and trying to guess where they were from.

Spending time with her family, having picnics in beautiful surroundings and having icecream while walking down to the lake at night was always a favourite of Mrs Padova. But travelling and exploring the world was also important. Mrs Padova spent her summer break in Germany and studied the language while there for three months.

Mrs Padova wanted to become a teacher because she likes young children, she enjoys helping others and she loved to pass on the Italian language while improving her English everyday too.

Mrs Padova started teaching in 2012 after arriving in Australia in 2009. She has taught Italian in the Junior School for seven years and enjoys singing and dancing with the Pre Primaries. She also like making arts and crafts with students and being able to connect with all the kids.

Miss Ceklic grew up in a small country in Europe called Montenegro. She can speak Serbian fluently and tries to visit her hometown every two years. As a child, Miss Ceklic loved soccer, rhythmic gymnastics and dance. She also used to take over a few of her school classes if her teacher was unavailable!

Did you know that Miss Ceklic loved Mathematics and Sport so much during her time at school and because of that, she wanted to become a teacher?

She also loves to work with kids. In 2017, Miss Ceklic finally pursued her dream in becoming a teacher. This is Miss Ceklic’s third year of teaching and has previously taught Kindergarten, Drama and Music classes.

Miss Ceklic loves everyday life! She loves all the small moments that it brings and she enjoys having a good laugh.

The Year 6 teacher loves the quote; God doesn’t give you anything you can’t handle. She believes it is a quote that she can really relate to.

THE ANNUAL BOOK FAIR !Vaanya Agarwal From July 29 to August 2, PCACS held a Book Fair, a fundraising event that assists the School in purchasing new items for the Library.

This year’s fair was held in the Undercover Area with students being able to purchase items for sale at lunch and after school. Many interesting and exciting books were on offer. Some were so popular that they sold out before the end of the week! There were also posters and stationary items for sale.

During the school day, each class was given a block of time where they had the opportunity to go the Book Fair and write a wish list of the books they would like to buy later in the week. The aim of creating a wish list was so that students could take it home to their families to let them know what they’d like. During this time, each class also had the chance to take a photo with Clifford, The Big Red Dog. He visits PCACS every year during the Book Fair.

A group of Year 6 students were selected to help run the event with Mrs Hill and her helpers. These students stood behind the counter, tallied up purchases, and gave change when required. It was quite a lot of responsibility for the leaders of the Junior School. The final Book Fair tally is yet to be released but as the Book Fair is now held at both PCACS campuses, it is sure to be another bumper year.

What’s New in the Library…

CHANGE UP YOUR CHOICE IN BOOKS! The Post’s book reviewer, Hamish Sullivan discovers a new addition to the PCACS Library.

It really hooked me because I just wanted to know what Charlie was going to change into next.

Charlie Changes into a Chicken by Sam Copeland has just hit the Library’s shelves.

This book had a pretty good story line for a children’s book. It also had a lot of funny things in it to make you laugh.

It is about a boy named Charlie who changes into many animals such as a rhino, snake, and even a flea.

The only negative thing about this story is that it was a little bit predictable.

Charlie and his friends have to figure out why he’s changing otherwise he might just be stuck as an animal forever!

Hamish says…

I would recommend this book for students in Year 3 to 5. It’s an easy read.

Taste Testing in the PCACS Canteen Are you getting a recess and lunch order? Can’t decide what to get because there are so many delicious choices? Alyssa Lucken, The Post’s taste tester, tries out some options…

PCACS canteen follows the traffic light system so we can all be confident that any choice will be healthy, filling and delicious!

For recess, I tried the famous mini cheesy pizza. It is incredibly popular with all students as it’s made with cheese, sweet ham and a tangy tomato paste served on an English muffin. The wonderful Canteen staff take these out of the oven just as the recess bell rings so they are still warm and the cheese is stringy…. Yum!!

If you are looking for something a little more filling for lunch, then I highly recommend the potato skins. For a low $2.50, you can order a fully loaded potato skin with flavours that are to die for like cheese and bacon; nacho; cheese and chicken. Can you think of a better combination? For an extra $2, you can double your serve! That’s enough to feed a growing teenager, like the high schoolers who you can never fill up!

You must that pop down to the Canteen and order these yummy options before the 2019 school year ends!

From the Editor’s Desk NASHWA SAALEM As the editor for the second edition of the PCACS Post, I would like to share with you, a little more about the Journalism Club and the work we put into the PCACS Post.

A lot of exciting things happened this term, like the Book Fair, the Athletics Carnivals and Science Week and the POST journalists were there to record it all!

We continue to work together on Monday afternoons. This term, we were given strict deadlines that we had to meet.

I would like to say thanks to all these hardworking Year 5 and 6 students for their effort. The newspaper would not have been the best without their help.

The PCACS Post Team (2nd Edition)

PCACS + Maths = Not So Average !Nashwa Saalem 1 AUGUST: selected students from Years 4 to 6 took part in the Australian Mathematics Competition. The test was held in the RAVE room and it went for an hour. This competition was held to assist our brightest mathematicians and was overseen by Mr Griffin.

The test papers were split into Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 and had 30 questions. 25 of them were multiple choice but the final five questions asked the test candidate to solve the problems. The questions were quite challenging and with the time limit of one hour, the competition became quite nerve wracking.

Before the competition started, many of the students were nervous, as only some people like tests, but they all felt happy and relieved at the end. The test may have been long, but at the end it felt that it had gone quite quickly.

Age is No Barrier for Making Friends !Portia-Lee Freeman Earlier this term, Year 5 students walked to Aegis Aged Care (Banksia Park) for several visits with the elderly residents. After a short 15 minute walk, our elderly buddies were very happy to see us.

In Week 2, the students wrote some questions in class and then were able to ask their buddies them. 5MC students were going to use this information to write a big poster containing facts all about their life. Due to personal information, we couldn’t write biographies, but our buddies were still happy to receive the posters.

When it came to the end of our final visit, it was very sad. Leaving was harder than we thought! However, some students have arranged to see their buddies in their own time.

I know that all of the students will have lovely memories of the time spent together with their new friends.

PCACS Chalks Up a Win! !Ryan Rawlinson

THOMAS OVAL, FRIDAY 9 AUGUST Mrs Chapman and students from Years 3 to 6 who qualified for the KSSA Cross Country competition set off to Thomas Oval to run the infamous, nearly vertical Chalk Hill. Nine schools sent their fastest long distance runners.

After we set up PCACS tent and flag, they announced over the speaker for the Year 3 girls to take their mark. After the starter’s gun went off, they bolted off behind the trees, up the hill and back around in amazing time. The boys were next and started off in a spectacular time. The Year 4 race saw competitors return puffed out but still with a smile on their faces. It was Year 5s turn next and they too set some super quick finishing times.

The Year 6 students, knowing that this was their last time running in the Junior School event, ran an extra 800m around the whole oval and then, crossed the finish line.

As each school packed up, KSSA staff tallied up the points.

Competitors, support staff and spectators were waiting on the edge of their seats to see who had won. PCACS students were hoping that they had done enough when conquering Chalk Hill.

Individual place ribbons were handed out and then, after much anticipation, it was announced that Peter Carnley Interschool Cross Country team won the entire event.

Riley and Bella accepted the shield on the School’s behalf and gave a short speech.

Students returned back to school happy, but very tired and thankful for the win. Thanks must so to Mrs Chapman for directing the racers and to the brave students who tackled the infamous Chalk Hill.

The Race Is On

FRIDAY 6 SEPTEMBER 2019 – Junior School students (Wellard Campus) participated in the 2019 Inter house Athletics Carnival, held at Wellard Oval.

Sunny skies made it a perfect day for competition and fun!

This year was extra exciting as the Year 2 students joined students from Years 3 to 6 to try their hardest and earn valuable House points!

The day started off with the 100 metre Sprints with the Year 2 racers competing in a slightly shorter, 70 metre, race. There were some extremely tight races with many giving it their all to push through and win at finish line. All competitors gave their absolute best, and in the end, all were successful and demonstrated great sportsmanship. There was even murmurs among the crowd that some PBs (personal best) times were broken!

On completion of the Sprints, different years groups went off to participate in a round robin events. The events consisted of turbo javelin, shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump and the 200 metre race.

During the round robin of events, students had the opportunity to have a break, let themselves rest and then, get ready for the last couple of activities that lay ahead.

By the afternoon, there was one event left: the relays. For this event, the four fastest boys and girls of each year level and from each House and run a 400m circular relay with the metal baton being passed to the next person in the team after running their 100m leg.

It was a hectic and fast moving day but it made for some great competition and lots of friendly rivalry between the competing Houses. However, it was Murray who ended up taking out the Junior School shield ahead of Laurence, who were just 27 points behind them in second place. Congratulations to Moody and Lindbeck competitors too. Big thanks goes out to Mrs Chapman who ran the carnival with precision!

Off and Running !Mackenzie Bewetz FRIDAY 13 SEPTEMBER 2019 - The ELC Athletics Carnival was held on the School’s oval from 1pm to 2:30pm.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 1 participated in the annual event. This year, the Year 2 students participated in the Wellard Campus Junior School event.

The children rotated through many different events including; sack races, vortex throwing, pass ball, leader ball and running races. All participants had smiles on their faces no matter what they were doing! The students held ‘I ran a race’ ribbons proudly above their heads. All buddy athletes demonstrated good sportsmanship and encouraged the other members in their team. You could tell they were having lots of fun!

Some carefully selected Year 6 helpers where delighted to assist Mrs Lawler (ELC Sports teacher), by pinning ribbons on the race runners, letting the teachers know when it was time to move to the next activity and, by playing music to add to the fun mood of the afternoon.

This year’s carnival was an amazing experience to attend and be a part of. The look on the students’ faces after they finished their races, were priceless. I can’t wait to see more happy faces at next year’s carnival!
