LETTER FROM GENERAL & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

On behalf of Palm Beach Opera, I am thrilled to present our annual Impact Report to you. A comprehensive review of the artistic highlights, milestones, and notable moments that marked the 2023 Season, this report serves as a testament to PBO's sustainability and the profound impact your support has had on our creative endeavors.

We opened our first full post-pandemic season with Puccini's iconic Madama Butterfly, which now ranks among the top-grossing PBO productions over the last 15 years. In Così fan tutte, we "brought Mozart's music to vivid life," as praised by the press, in a colorful production set on the sparkling French Riviera. At our 2023 Gala, we presented one of the most sought-after tenors of our time and raised the most gala support in recent company history. For our final opera, we presented a company debut of Verdi’s cherished Shakespearean comedy Falstaff to critical acclaim.

And these are just the on-stage successes. Behind the scenes, PBO moved into its first-ever facility, The Cornelia T. Bailey Opera Center, and for the

first time, artists from around the world trained inside. Our vibrant education and community engagement programs continued to reach thousands in South Florida, and our competitive artist training programs nurtured the talent of 14 rising singers and 1 pianist. Matched with an increase in new audiences, many surpassed earned revenue goals, and a growing board and staff, the 2023 Season was one of extraordinary triumph.

But none of these achievements would have been possible without your invaluable support. As you travel through the pages of this report, we hope you will share in our pride for all we have accomplished together and the boundless potential that lies ahead. Thank you for being a part of our journey, and I look forward to another remarkable year filled with opera, artistry, and inspiration.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Palm Beach Opera’s Education and Community Engagement celebrates the transformative power of live opera for people of all ages and levels of experience. Our diverse education programs, provided at no cost, bring opera to local schools and organizations.

PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN

Offered in both Spanish and English, Story Time Series provides a sing-along storytelling experience for younger audiences with PBO’s custom story books. At Opera Rehearsal 101, middle and high school groups enjoy a glimpse into the production process by experiencing a live dress rehearsal. PBO's Bailey Apprentice Artists bring the magic of live opera to K-12 classrooms with the Concerts in the Classroom program. To help integrate Palm Beach Opera’s events into every teacher’s curriculum, each of our education programs is accompanied by teacher resource guides that correspond to Florida education standards.

Part of PBO’s mission is to create lasting connections in the South Florida community. This season, PBO built two new partnerships with local organizations—West Palm Beach’s Florence De George Boys & Girls Club and Delray Beach’s

876 students attended Opera Rehearsal 101

Milagro Center. Children at both organizations participated in PBO's Opera: Our Story, a writeyour-own-opera experience. Over the course of eight weeks, students learned singing techniques, created the libretto, designed sets, and more, all in preparation for a culminating opera performance.

62 Education and Community Engagement events

ADULT PROGRAMMING

PBO’s programming serves adults year-round. At Opera Conversations, PBO presents interactive sessions about the art form, featuring PBO staff and guest speakers who discuss a wide range of opera topics. PBO's newest program, Opera Forum, hosts public panel discussions that bring together staff, local leaders, artists, and guest scholars to exchange ideas about each of PBO's opera productions. For those who are unable to experience live opera in the theater, PBO’s ANIMA brings the power of live opera to nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and more.

ARTIST TRAINING

1,000+ applications

15 resident artists

Palm Beach Opera is proud to be home to one of the leading training centers for emerging artists in the opera industry. Each year, Palm Beach Opera’s rigorous artist training programs attract more than 1,000 singers from across the county and abroad.

Our unique three-tiered artist training initiative provides opportunities for artists at several key stages of their development. PBO Studio offers free vocal training for high school students

RESIDENT ARTIST SHOWCASE

Palm Beach Opera presented "beautiful voices", as celebrated by the Palm Beach Post, and elegant receptions at its inaugural Resident Artist Showcase on Dec. 10 at The Cornelia T. Bailey Opera Center, marking the first public event at PBO’s recentlypurchased space.

The inaugural Resident Artist Showcase featured a curated evening of opera scenes performed by PBO’s Benenson Young Artists and Bailey Apprentice Artists inside The Cornelia T. Bailey Opera Center. The 18,000 sq. ft. building—which coincided with a groundbreaking six-million-dollar donation—serves

as a PBO hub for rehearsals, training, wardrobe and wig design, production management, administrative staff, and more. The 2023 Season resident artists are the first to train and perform inside.

Part of the company’s Discovery Series initiative, which aims to present lesser-known works at smaller South Florida venues, the Resident Artist Showcase allows PBO to expand its artistic offerings and foster artistic growth at the same time. The showcase provided an opportunity for artists in the programs to perform tailored scenes selected specifically for their voice and career track.

On Jan. 20-22, Palm Beach Opera presented its first mainstage production of the 2023 Season, Madama Butterfly. In an effort to best present Puccini’s famed opera in today’s modern world, PBO hired cultural consultant Satomi Hirano for the production and collaborated with Delray Beach's Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens on two free community events in January that explored the opera’s inspiration. Palm Beach Opera’s production also featured carefullyselected costumes and thoughtful design details. PBO’s 2023 Madama Butterfly ranks among the top grossing operas in recent company history.

Palm Beach Opera’s company debut of Falstaff marked the final opera of the exciting 2023 Season. Based on Shakespeare’s iconic character, Falstaff –performed “effortlessly” by Michael Chioldi in his eighth PBO production – brought the notorious knight to life with a whimsical story and an ensemble tour-de-force. The immersive production also featured a set design inspired by the famed Globe Theater in London, adding a Shakespearean element to the opera.

Renowned conductor Antonello Allemandi and director Garnett Bruce, who worked together in PBO's celebrated 2022 Carmen, returned in this production. THE CORNELIA T. BAILEY OPERA CENTER

This season, Palm Beach Opera moved into its new Northwood home, The Cornelia T. Bailey Opera Center. Made possible in part by a groundbreaking $6 million gift last year, The Cornelia T. Bailey Opera Center serves as a company hub of creativity and collaboration, providing 18,000 square feet of space for artist training, rehearsals, costume design, new education initiatives, administrative needs, expanded programming, and more.

During The Cornelia T. Bailey Opera Center's inaugural year, PBO hosted the highly anticipated Resident Artist Showcase, Liederabend, the Palm Beach Opera Studio Recital, and the End of Season Celebration—an annual presentation held for all supporters at the end of the season—all inside the building’s intimate Rehearsal Hall.

PBO’s 2023 Season resident artists were the first to train inside the new facility. During their residency

from November to March, the artists trained in acoustically-treated studios, received masterclasses from guest faculty, and prepared to perform on the mainstage alongside principal artists. All season long, artists from across the country and abroad rehearse for mainstage operas at the building. Nearly 200 contracted professional artists—stage managers, costume designers, choristers, and more—worked inside The Cornelia T. Bailey Opera Center this season. The Palm Beach Opera Orchestra, now in its 29th season, also held rehearsals at The Cornelia T. Bailey Opera Center for the first time.

The administrative team moved into the building in June, finalizing the transition. All company operations now take place within the facility, allowing for deeper collaboration, stronger synergy, and enhanced efficiency.

MEET THE COVER ARTIST

ON THE COVER

Melissa DelPrete

c blossoms diptych, 2020 Oil on Masonite, 50” x 37”

Palm Beach Opera’s 2023 Season featured artist was award-winning local painter Melissa DelPrete. The full diptych served as cover art on the 2023 Season program book. Melissa’s paintings and drawings are rooted in her long standing interest in art and design. Created within an intuitive flow, the various compositions are meant to mimic the rhythmic patterns and cycles of the human psyche. In addition to maintaining her painting practice, Melissa owns and operates mtn space, an art gallery

and residency program dedicated to exhibiting emerging and established artists.

Says Ms. DelPrete, “Opera and painting are both raw expressions of the human experience. Opera can make colors with notes and language, and paintings can summon notes with color and pattern. They both explore rhythm, composition, shape, and form with two completely different approaches. And they both elicit the intensity of our lives.”

Palm Beach Opera presented renowned tenor Piotr Beczała at its annual gala, PBO’s largest fundraising event, at The Breakers Palm Beach on Feb. 6. One of the most sought-after tenors of our time, Beczała has performed at many of the leading opera houses around the world and is a regular guest at the Metropolitan Opera.

Following a lavish cocktail reception, the exclusive concert featured Beczała in recital with pianist Bryan Wagorn, who serves as assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera and regularly performs

across the country and abroad as a soloist, chamber musician, and recital accompanist to opera’s biggest stars. The star tenor performed opera arias from notable career performances, including the famed aria "Nessun dorma" from Turandot as the finale. Palm Beach Opera’s talented resident artists also made several appearances in the recital. In selected arias, Beczała shared the stage with PBO’s Benenson Young Artists and Bailey Apprentice Artists who performed as the chorus, and with Benenson Young Artists Alexandra Razskazoff and Meridian Prall in two duets.

PALM BEACH OPERA GUILD

Each season, the Palm Beach Opera Guild raises funds in support of Palm Beach Opera. The Palm Beach Opera Guild hosts various social and fundraising events throughout the year, including their annual luncheon. During the 2023 Season, the Guild hosted an exclusive lunch at the Four Seasons in Palm Beach and presented an intimate performance by former PBO resident artist Anthony Ciaramitaro and PBO Associate Conductor & Chorus Master Gregory Ritchey.

The Guild directly supports Palm Beach Opera Studio, the company’s free vocal training program for high school students, as well as the supertitles at all mainstage productions. The 2023 Season program book was also sponsored in part by the Palm Beach Opera Guild.

FINANCIALS

The 2023 Season marked a return of Palm Beach Opera’s first full season of programmatic offerings since the start of the pandemic. PBO was able to provide patrons with the full opera experience in the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, along with all the free education and community engagement activities that had been limited during the years of COVID-19.

Year-over-year mainstage ticket sales increased by 24%, Opening Night Dinner, Lunch and Learn, and resident artist concert revenues rose 48%, and the excitement for the season culminated in PBO’s annual fundraiser which raised a record $680,000, the highest in recent company history.

Market forces such as inflation and higher fuel prices affected most industries this season, and PBO was not immune to cost increases. Despite these challenges, the company achieved an unrestricted operating surplus of $667,000, and had working capital in excess of $2.3 million by the end of the 2023 fiscal year. Palm Beach Opera continues to chart a path of fiscal conservatism while maintaining its reputation for artistic excellence.
