LETTER FROM GENERAL & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR DAVID WALKER

The 21-22 Season was one of immense gratitude, accomplishment, and company firsts. After hours of virtual programming in 2020, a first-ever outdoor opera festival in 2021, and nearly two years away from the Kravis Center–where we’ve showcased our productions for 30 years–PBO made a triumphant return to indoor opera just in time for its historic 60th Anniversary Season. Palm Beach Opera’s milestone season generated a 300% increase in ticket revenues, a record-breaking increase in net assets, and board reserves rising to nearly $880,000. After entertaining more than 8,000 audience members, our fiscal year ended with extremely strong cash flow and an operating surplus of $1.4 million.

A moment decades in the making, Palm Beach Opera also purchased an 18,000-square-foot building in West Palm Beach to serve as very our own state-of-the-art opera center. In addition to housing our administrative staff, the new facility will be home to our education initiatives, unique community programming, and all rehearsals and artist training sessions. This important purchase was made possible by a groundbreaking $6 million gift from an anonymous notable local foundation, marking the largest donation in company history. This extraordinary multiyear gift will also support mainstage productions and our Apprentice Artist program.

Our mainstage productions of Carmen, The Elixir of Love, and The Merry Widow all garnered positive reviews from critics and featured leading operatic talent from around the world. In addition to fulfilling our mission of providing world-class opera to South Florida, PBO continued its commitment to training the next generation of opera stars through another season of rigorous and competitive artist residencies. PBO’s nationally-recognized artist training programs attracted over 1,000 applicants and nurtured the talent of 24 rising singers.

Palm Beach Opera has provided the transformative power of live opera to South Florida for 60 years, and the 21-22 Season continued to build on that legacy, as outlined in this 21-22 Season Impact Report. Thanks to Palm Beach Opera’s growing board of directors and staff, its generous supporters and patrons, and the esteemed artists who continue to elevate Palm Beach Opera season after season, PBO’s future is brighter than ever.

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS

To celebrate Palm Beach Opera’s 60th Anniversary Season, the PBO staff dug through decades of photos, programs, newspaper articles, and other archival materials from the company’s rich 60-year history. The 21-22 Season program book included a collection of archival images, shared PBO’s production history, highlighted the women who founded Palm Beach Opera, and more, all alongside casting and production details.

The oldest performing arts organization in Palm Beach County, Palm Beach Opera also wanted to commemorate the milestone season by celebrating our diverse and arts-thriving community in a new, unique way. On the program book cover, we showcased a painting by local artist Tracy Guiteau, who was PBO’s inaugural artist partner for the 60th Anniversary Season. As we reflected on PBO’s 60 years in South Florida, and the company’s resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to live opera over the years, we were inspired by her vibrant painting “Transcending Grace.” The painting is also featured on the front of this Impact Report.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Palm Beach Opera was founded in the summer of 1961 as the Civic Opera of the Palm Beaches by Isabel Chatfield, Charlotte Miller, Rosita Franks, Princess Jane Obolensky, Octavia Could, Alberta Grant, and Thelma Miller. On January 29, 1962 at the Palm Beach High School Auditorium, the organization presented its firstever production, La traviata, to a sold-out audience of 1,200 with a live chorus and 26-piece orchestra. Even in its early years, the Civic Opera of the Palm Beaches— which became Palm Beach Opera in the 80s—attracted international stars like Beverly Sills and Robert Merrill.

opera icons Luciano Pavarotti, Roberta Peters, Plácido Domingo, Diana Damrau, Sondra Radvanovsky, and Matthew Polenzani among others. For more than 60 years, Palm Beach Opera has provided the magic of live opera to South Florida and has shown resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment even in the face of unprecedented challenges.

In February of 2021, in response to COVID-19, Palm Beach Opera presented its first-ever outdoor opera festival, representing the nation’s first largescale presentation of live opera since the onset of the pandemic. Featuring Metropolitan Opera stars Isabel Leonard, Latonia Moore, Ana María Martínez, Janai Brugger, Kathryn Lewek, Michael Fabiano, Quinn Kelsey, Joshua Hopkins, Peixin Chin, Michael Chioldi, Ryan Speedo Green, and Matthew Polenzani, the groundbreaking festival was celebrated as a “courageous winter operatic feast” by South Florida Classical Review, “breathtakingly beautiful” by Palm Beach Daily News, and “the centerpiece of this year’s season” by WLRN.

Over the years, the company has been led by esteemed conductors and artistic directors and has presented some of the world’s most famous performers, including

Today, Palm Beach Opera continues to build on its legacy with competitive artist training programs, its esteemed orchestra and chorus, free education and community programs, and leading operatic talent from around the world.

“Palm Beach Opera has vaulted into the first rank of American opera companies and attracted considerable international attention as the first company in the pandemic era in North America to forge ahead with a full-length live opera.”

MILESTONE MOMENTS

18 ,000

square feet of new space to call home

$ 6M record-breaking donation

The 60th Anniversary Season was one of extraordinary celebration and unforgettable record-breaking. In addition to marking six decades of live opera in South Florida, Palm Beach Opera celebrated the largest donation in company history and the firstever purchase of a facility to call home, a dream decades in the making.

In the fall of 2021, just before kicking off the 21-22 Season, Palm Beach Opera announced its landmark purchase of an 18,000 square-foot facility to house its staff, artist training programs, rehearsals, and more. Rehearsals and artist training sessions are already taking place at the new building.

In April, Palm Beach Opera also announced the groundbreaking $6 million gift from a notable local foundation—the largest donation in company history. The multi-year funding will support PBO’s new Northwood home and the intended state-of-the-art renovations, its rigorous Bailey Apprentice Artist training program, and three mainstage productions.

“We are eager to dream bigger and plan for Palm Beach Opera’s bright future,” said PBO’s Chairman of the Board David Genser in a statement about the donation.

“This transformative gift will help Palm Beach reach new artistic heights and ensure that world-class opera will continue to thrive in our community for years to come.”

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Palm Beach Opera’s education programs bring live opera to our community, inspire a life-long interest in the arts, and present thoughtful, engaging education programs for learners of all ages.

Presented as part of the Goldner Center for Children's Opera Education, PBO's free education programs bring opera to local schools and organizations. Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, Palm Beach Opera remained committed to sharing the magic of live opera with our community. Presented in both English and Spanish, our Story Time Series gave our youngest fans the chance to step into the action of opera’s greatest tales. They read, sang, and act, following along with our Teaching Artists using PBO’s custom storybooks. At Opera Rehearsal 101, middle and high school groups enjoyed a glimpse into the

production process by experiencing a live dress rehearsal. To help integrate Palm Beach Opera’s events into every teacher’s curriculum, each of our education programs is accompanied by teacher resource guides that correspond to Florida education standards.

At Palm Beach Opera, our engagement programs reach many corners of the Palm Beach County community. This season's Opera Conversations featured interactive sessions that ranged from lectures to libretto readings to game-based discovery about opera history and culture. As a special offering to celebrate PBO’s 60th Anniversary Season, PBO launched a new Opera Open House exhibit, showcasing costumes, props, memorabilia, and more from PBO’s rich 60-year history. The free exhibit was displayed at both the Historical Society of Palm Beach County and at Lake Worth’s Hatch 1121.

During performance weeks, Palm Beach Opera aims to build community among our audiences by hosting events around the operas. Lunch & Learn offers a sneak peek into the season with intimate performances by PBO’s artists in residence and a lecture presented by PBO staff. Opening Night Dinner, an exclusive VIP experience, features a pre-performance dinner and unique insight into the opera. In an effort to protect our audiences, artists, and staff, enhancement events were not available for the first two operas of the season. However, we were able to present Lunch & Learn and Opening Night Dinner for our final opera, The Merry Widow.

*While Palm Beach Opera always strives to offer as many education and community engagement events as possible, the safety of our community is our first priority. Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, Palm Beach Opera was still able to provide a limited offering of events, but a typical season offers much more. In a standard season, Palm Beach Opera reaches nearly 20,000 individuals.

ARTIST TRAINING

Palm Beach Opera is proud to be home to one of the leading training centers for emerging artists in the opera industry. Since PBO’s first formal resident artist program in 2004, which included then-risingstar Nadine Sierra among the inaugural roster, Palm Beach Opera has built prestigious and robust artist training programs that attract singers from across the county and abroad. For the 2022 Season, Palm Beach

Opera received over 1,000 applications–the most ever received in company history.

Our unique three-tiered artist training initiative provides opportunities for artists at several key stages of their development. PBO Studio offers free vocal training for high school students preparing for college, the Bailey Apprentice Artist program helps recent conservatory graduates build professional experience, and the Benenson Young Aritst program nurtures the talent of singers on the brink of international careers.

During their five-month professional residencies, the Benenson Young Artists and Bailey Apprentice Artists focus full-time on their artistic growth with daily coaching, masterclasses, career guidance, frequent performances, and more.

The Bailey Apprentice Artists also act as PBO's community ambassadors, singing throughout the region in education and engagement programs.

DIDO AND AENEAS Henry Purcell

On Dec. 11, Palm Beach Opera opened its historic 60th Anniversary Season with an exclusive Season Opening Celebration and outdoor performance of Purcell’s rarely-heard Baroque gem Dido and Aeneas. The soldout audience enjoyed an intimate performance by PBO’s resident artists and members of the acclaimed Palm Beach Opera Orchestra, led by Associate Conductor & Chorus Master Gregory Ritchey.

Held at the Norton Museum of Art, the seasonopening event featured exclusive receptions, including a three-course seated dinner inside the museum, a special pre-show cocktail hour in the gardens, and a post-performance toast to the season with cocktails and passed desserts.

Marking a company first, PBO commissioned a painting specifically for Dido and Aeneas by local West Palm Beach artist Tracy Guiteau, whose work has been exhibited around the world. Guiteau’s vibrant painting for PBO featured hidden embedded messages about the opera.
