CLOUDBUSTING - 40 Years of KATE BUSH

When all is said and done, 'Cloudbusting' is a song about how it’s not necessarily a bad thing to want to live in the past. ‘You’re just in reach, when you and sleep escape me.’ All five members of Cloudbusting are guilty of spending too much time trying to rediscover the emotions of hearing this music for the first, second, third, four hundredth time, and of reliving the joys and sorrows these songs evoke. Kate’s music has become an obsession, the soundtrack to our lives. This is a phrase every fellow Kate fan understands, because her music is always there, distracting us, consoling us, inspiring us, just like Peter Reich’s father in the song.

So, what is it with tribute bands? Why don’t they play their own music? Don’t they get tired of playing someone else’s music night after night? Put it this way… 'The Saxophone Song'… 'Kashka From Baghdad'… 'Breathing'… 'All The Love'… 'And Dream of Sheep'… 'Under the Ivy'… 'Rocket’s Tail'… 'A Coral Room'… who in their right mind would want to play anything else? And what greater joy than to revel in it, live and loud, time and time again, with fellow Kate Bush fans up and down the UK? In the words of Peter Reich, "We’re 'Cloudbusting' Daddy!"

The best thing is when other people suddenly ‘get it’. The husbands, wives, friends, work colleagues who’ve been dragged along to a Kate Bush tribute band where they console themselves, at least they’ll know ‘that song’.

After the show… “Oh my god, I had no idea how many songs I’d recognise! And the ones I didn’t they’re amazing too!” Then, next day on Facebook: “I went out and bought all her albums I could find and I’m blown away. Kate Bush is so much more than just a high, squeaky voice!” Yes, we know.

In early 2015 we set out to celebrate 30 years of ‘Hounds of Love’ with a performance of the album in full. We decided that if we were going to do it, we might as well do it exactly like it is on the record. So we spent most of the year analysing all the vocal experimentation, instrumentation and sonic layering and tried not to panic about how we would perform everything live. Kate’s music takes its cues from dreams and nightmares nurtured by years of coaxing in the studio; people were not going to be forgiving if we didn’t get it right.

Such is the ‘Pull of the Bush’ that we had many offers of help from musicians who love Kate’s work. The London Bulgarian Choir recreated the chorus of ‘Hello Earth’ and Irish folk-rockers Mad Dog Mcrea the delirious abandon of ‘Jig of Life’. We listened again to our own sounds and instruments and found they were lacking, so invested in new technologies in our quest for ultimate authenticity, all the time committed to keeping it ‘live’. Piece by piece the magic of ‘The Ninth Wave’ reassembled itself in the rehearsal room, and later on stage at the Islington Assembly Hall, 30 years to the day after the album’s release. The sheer power and drama of the music proved to us once again that Kate’s music is just too good not to be performed live.

‘The Kick Inside’ should have been a breeze after this, being rooted in the more conventional instrumentation of the late 70s. Indeed, the heady counterpoint of songs like ‘The Saxophone Song’ and ‘Wuthering Heights’ was a joy to unpick, weaving around all those string arrangements and impossibly high backing vocals.

But the real challenge this time lay with Mandy, negotiating the vocal pyrotechnics of a youthful Kate Bush without losing sight of the emotional core of this, her remarkable debut album. After months and months of rehearsal, ’The Kick Inside’ has turned out to be a sheer joy to perform.

Jane Everett - Most people of my age usually know where they were when JFK was assassinated (or some other similar world event) - NOT ME!!

I remember very clearly the day in January 1978 when the first ever playing of the wonderful ‘Wuthering Heights’ came on the radio!! I was a student in London & my world just stopped as I listened intently to the first haunting notes from this amazing (& then completely unknown) artist I’d never heard anything quite like it before & was blown-away - it was completely life-enhancing & I couldn’t wait to get hold of TKI album (cassette version!!) so I could continually play it - it’s still, by far, my favourite Kate album - I love it all!!

John Rinaldi - I played this album constantly when it came out and I’m still playing it all these years later. I continue seduced by its magic and still smile when l hear the immortal line ‘my feet are heavy and they’re rooted in my wellios’.

I think of it every time I listen to that beautiful,emotional ,seductive piece of genius. There is no finer singer/ songwriter in my eyes than Kate Bush.

Steve Fitz - When I first listened to ‘The Kick Inside’ I was deeply moved by the saxophone song.

It was something special indeed. I then experienced that strange phenomenon of the crazy lyrics to that katchy kite! They confused me man, made me look at things through a child's eyes. I was elevated to the wuthering heights of pretending to be James and his cold gun. It was then I could feel it, oh to be in love....with Kate, ‘l’amour' as the parisians might say. Then it got serious, some heavy people got involved and I realised I had to find room for my own life. A swift kick inside sorted out those heavy people. After much therapy and 40 years I am now functioning again but I have to go through it all again on the 17/02/18 thanks to that bloody Cloudbusting band.

Then along came ‘Wuthering Heights’ and soon after the album!! It was such a contrast to what I was listening to back then, but I knew from the first listen it was going to be worth it. Still love to hear it now and, knowing all the words, to sing along with it!! Kate introduced me to the wonders of how expressive the female voice could be. Being a fan since 1978 it’s a real shame that I never got to see her live - But at least I’ve got the music to listen to. Thank you so much for the music Kate!!!

Oh, and the link between ‘Moving’ the ‘The Saxophone Song’ is the most wonderful few seconds of silence ever.

Genius. I hope when you get to read all of these you’ll realise how much this album means to all of us.

Janet Hazeldine - The hours I spent as a teenager examining the visually stunning album cover...I could describe every minute detail with my eyes closed.

The hours I spent listening to the most amazing tracks I had ever heard ...I could sing every word. Each song still evokes so many sentiments. ‘The Saxophone Song’ I especially loved but can’t call it a favourite as every track is a favourite in some way or other. The incredible talent of Kate Bush makes every song special in their own unique way. She has always been my icon and always will be. I unashamedly named my daughter Kate in her honour and am proud to say my Kate is now as big a fan as I am as she grew up with Kate Bush providing a soundtrack for her life. My Kate is now a musician herself who has been influenced by KB and is proud to say that.

It is a timeless work of sheer brilliance and I absolutely adore it. Thank you, Kate, for your intriguing and eternally inspirational gift to us Lesley Jane Percy - I remember vividly sitting cross legged on my grandparents living room floor in Haworth watching TOTP. I was 6 years old. I already loved some other female artists but they were all influences from family. Kate appeared and firstly the fact the song was about Wuthering Heights drew me in as I was already a Bronte fan and also just her presence. I apparently rabbited on to my grandfather about it until he took me the next day to buy Wuthering Heights and then the Kick Inside. Both Kate and the Brontes have helped me through difficult times growing up and my love for both has matured just as Kate has too. 40 years since Kate's launch and the 200th birthday of Emily this year both wonderful events to celebrate.

Gary Davis - The first album I got as a 15 year old and fell in love with, so original, still to this day.

Fantastic.

Sophie Mangnall - LOVE this album, it overloads with creativity, personal experiences and awareness of social issues. Being of a similar age that Kate was when she released this album, I find certain lyrics so relatable, and often find myself going into a trance like state whilst listening.

You had me at “Out...�. The 16 year old me, hooked forever. “The Kick Inside� played forever on my Alba portable record player. Truly magical record and loved as much today as it was back then.

Deborah Louise - TKI is the one I always go to first..There’s no one that will ever get close to Kate, always been my favourite, always will be.

Gina Butler - Music that speaks to my heart and soul. Comforts me in times of sadness and fills me with joy when I’m happy.

Charlotte Worker - Thirteen years old. Head full of how to be awesome and contemplating what kind of awesome I wanted to be. Then, there it was - ostensibly ‘music’, but for me more an ‘experience’, a feeling. TKI revealed this to me: That I could be dreamy, fierce, conventional, strange, vulnerable, sharp, unfathomable, resolute, louche... whenever it suited me, as long as I was ‘real’; that my sensuality was to be treasured, nurtured, respected; to allow sparks from literature to get inside my head and heart (cue devouring the BrontĂŤ works); that the world could well be brimful of an exotic array of Heavy People and James’s and (mis)understood childlike people or Cathy's or people who look to the sky for their kicks. I guess Kate could be forgiven for thinking she’s a quasi-religion by now. But it is simply this these twelve tracks, and those since, have become part of our hearts and minds, even our physiology - our kids get your music, and want to sing and dance and act and play because of it. So, just thank you. We still Feel It. Mary Milton - This was the first album I ever brought with my first weeks wages from my first ever job when I left school.

Preston Heyman 40 years? The great thing about Kate’s music is that it’s timeless. Kate never followed any trends - she is her own trend. And the music sounds as fresh now as when it was first released.

tomorrow too quick

I grabbed a copy, went home, plonked myself on the settee and picked up the cover - and at that very moment, Kate appeared in front of me on the telly. She was on Michael Aspel Thames News, Kate was explaining how she was planning to go on tour. She came across as such a great artist, and I thought to myself how much I’d love to work with her.

The second I had that thought my phone rang.

I picked it up and a voice said: “Hello… it’s Kate Bush here…” and I said “...I know!”

She said, "What do you mean?”

So I explained how I’d just come in with her record and had been watching her on the telly and thinking how much I’d like to work with her and then the phone rang, so that, of course, I’d known it was her.

“Oh!" She said.

"Well... will you, then?”

“Will I what?”

What an incredible journey we've all been on!!... So many of you have been there from the start and I know how much Kate appreciates your continued support.

You know there come times in everyone’s life when you encounter someone or something that’s going to change you forever… Meeting Kate in the early spring of 1977 was one of those fateful moments… Little did I know how much life would change for me… Little did I know how, 40 years later, I’d be celebrating this anniversary…

I do hope you enjoy this celebration tonight and here’s to the next 40 years!!…

How did I come to meet Kate? I was the drummer with a band called ‘Gonzalez’. In 1975 we had our first hit ‘Haven’t Stopped Dancing Yet’ - a disco classic! After that, we became the house band for EMI which meant that any artist that needed drums, bass or brass would come to us. And one of the perks of being house band was that you could pop into EMI and pick up any of the new release LPs lying around - often as many as 30 or 40 a week. Sometimes they’d be good, a lot of them rubbish… but on this occasion, there were boxes and boxes of Lionheart records showing Kate in the lion's outfit on a blanket box on all fours. It was a great cover and I sort of knew it was going to be a wonderful and very different kind of record.

The bizarre way I became�friends with Kate Bush...

Stewart Avon Arnold & Tori Wood-Ives started working with Kate Bush nearly forty years ago. I had only recently left "theI first London School of Contemporary Dance, and had no way of knowing how significant dancing for Kate would be. The ‘Tour of Life’ marked a new level of staging, performance and choreography that had yet to be seen in the world of rock in the UK. Here I had the privilege of working with a star, innovator, visionary, genius, mystic, songwriter, performer and artist. At the time, of course, I had no way of knowing she would become all this.

Working with fellow Kate-collaborator Anthony Van Laast, and having the honour of working on Kate’s movie ‘The Line, The Cross & The Curve’, gave me a sense of pride that I had finally arrived! Everyone who works or collaborates with Kate has to have something special about them, and from my experience they all seems to have that, and more. Her band were some of the most talented musicians in the country and have continued to work with her over the years. Del Palmer, her bass guitarist and engineer for many years, helped to refine and develop her growth musically - along with Kevin, Brian, Danny, Preston, Stuart and many more.

It has always been an amazing experience working with Kate. With my own individual growth as a performer, choreographer and artist I have learnt so much from this very special woman. I know as a creative choreographer, that her insight, vision and imagination has certainly rubbed off on me and has inspired my own body of work, in its own way.

Simon Drake

In January 1978 I was working as a record plugger and moonlighting as a magician, performing in west end music clubs like the Marquee and Speakeasy.

I wore a white face which wasn’t due to my skills as a mime but rather a disguise to prevent losing my day job.

Also, and I know how unbelievable this sounds but I was up at all hours working for the iconic singer Lou Reed. I was a minder for Lou’s transsexual partner Rachel Humphries.

Poor Rachel was something of a diva and a total walking Tsunami, prone to walking onto a nightclub, slamming £2k in cash on the bar and shouting ‘I want some cocaine!’, she also flooded out one of the largest suites at the Ritz Hotel which cost Lou a fortune as well as a catalogue of other colourful disasters.

So around that time I was very much sleep deprived and often late for my day job. I was on my last written warning, so I invested in a brand new radio alarm clock, which I set to full volume and strange as it may seem, the seeds of how I met Kate Bush were sown.

My new alarm went off, one morning with a sound that made me feel totally disorientated.

It was my very first hearing of 'Wuthering Heights'. Immediately my hit-sensing plugger ears pricked up and at the end of the song the DJ said, ‘That was Kate Bush’s debut single who is being interviewed this evening on the Tony Myatt show on Capital Radio.’

I knew Tony’s producer Eddie Pumer well and called him later in the day and we chatted about how extraordinary the Kate Bush single was. I was 100% certain it was going to be a massive hit. I asked Eddie to give, the then quite unknown, Kate a message that her single was going to number one and she will eventually tour and I would be in her show and help her write the visuals. Possibly less Nostradamus and more cocky little upstart.

He passed on the message along with my phone number and the next day Kate called me. I invited her to my show the following week at a club called J. Arthurs in Worlds End, Chelsea. I wasn’t aware of it at the time but it was owned by notorious gangster and Kray brothers’ enforcer Freddie Foreman. I am not at all sure I would have invited a young Kate Bush there if I had known that at the time!

About a month later 'Wuthering Heights' hit number one in the charts. Within a few more months I was attending regular meetings with Kate and Del at her flat in South London and at my place in West London. Her brother Paddy was also at all the meetings and John at many.

By spring the following year I had quit my day job to join the thirteen people on stage for the now legendary 'Tour of Life'. © Simon Drake London 2018

I was a dyed-in-the-wool fan of Kate since Day One. You could immediately tell she was one of the one and onlys. Out of step with current trends, with an unprecedented courage in inventing her own world and her own raw and visceral musical style. Her music was demanding - pushing you out of your comfort zone - and it still is.

I have had the privilege to collaborate with her for over ten years - those that cover her boldest albums: ‘The Dreaming’, ‘Hounds of Love’, ‘The Sensual World’, ‘The Red Shoes’ including her film ‘The Line, The Cross & The Curve’. Kate has always seemed to me, the most truly genuine person you could ever hope to meet in the music business. I had Kate’s trust as she never felt vulnerable or exposed in front of my camera. We had a kind of telepathic communication which is rare to come across. We had loads of fun producing images that aimed to reveal some of her true self rather than attempting to contribute to the mythology of a pop icon. We kept things simple and

direct. Her beauty was breathtaking, her presence unquestionable. I did my best to sense her moods as they shifted during the long and gruelling shoots, both of us always expecting something magic to happen at any time, for any given reason. For once she was in somebody else’s hands, not in full control, but she loved it!

We never thought these photos would have any afterlife; they were fed to the press by the record company and occasionally featured on record covers and promo posters. Today they feel more like a personal, intimate diary of a journey, sheer moments of pleasure. My book ‘The Kate Inside’ is all about this. The proof that once - even if just for a heartbeat - everything was perfect. We’ve been lucky.
