An Eventful Month few weeks ago, I visited with a friend who has lived throughout Florida for most of his life, and the subject of “the season” made its way into the conversation, as it often does when you talk with anyone who’s been a resident of the Sunshine State for a few decades.

Cultural and social activities once were limited to just a few months on the calendar, he recalled.

But all that has changed, thanks to Florida’s explosive population growth and a new appetite for culture and all things sophisticated. Summer or winter, there is something to do every day of the week. In fact, if you look at the overflowing Calendar section in this issue of Tampa Bay Illustrated, you can easily see that, in all of our markets, seasonality is a thing of the past.

October is full of activity. For example, comedian Jerry Seinfeld is coming to Palm Beach, Naples’ acclaimed Philharmonic Orchestra plans four performances, and the Tampa Bay area features concerts by cellist Yo-Yo Ma and rocker Bonnie Raitt, among other key dates. Beyond the entertainment venues, major social and charitable events are already well under way, and our company is involved with many of them. With a calendar so full, it’s difficult to recall the day when October events were rare. Our focus has shifted to participating in or covering them.

There’s an ever-growing, increasingly appreciative year-round audience for these events today, and packed performance venues provide evidence of that. This is a good thing. Thick datebooks are just as beautiful as this month’s temperate weather.

Of course, Tampa Bay Illustrated is here to help you keep track of it all, with an entertaining mix of stories about the names and faces associated with the events and relevant advertising messages about the things you need or desire to make life more pleasant. Chris Botti’s music is undeniably recognizable. The avant-garde trumpeter fuses genres—mainly jazz, pop and classical—to create a warm yet complex crossover of sound. This might explain his worldwide attention. Botti is known for collaborating with firstclass musicians, rock stars and composers like Sting, Yo-Yo Ma and Joni Mitchell. He’ll perform his soulful tunes at Tampa’s MarineMax Clearwater Jazz Holiday on October 16.

■ WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO PLAY THE TRUMPET? The reason I first picked up the trumpet is Doc Severinsen. I saw and heard him on [The Tonight Show with] Johnny Carson so many years ago. A few years after I’d been playing the trumpet, I was probably 12 or 13, I heard Miles Davis. The cornerstone in his sound is melancholy, a beautiful, haunting trumpet sound, and that made me want to become a professional trumpet player. I still listen to Miles Davis all the time.

■ YOU ARE CONSTANTLY TRAVELING. HOW DO YOU KEEP IN SHAPE? I do an intense yoga practice, Ashtanga, which has been a great thing in my life. It helps my trumpet playing, keeps me in great shape and away from bad elements. For the last 10 years, yoga and adrenaline [have] kept me going.

■ IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH THREE MUSICIANS WHO WOULD THEY BE? I’d go to dinner with Sting because he’s my buddy and a great musician. I’m a big fan of Peter Gabriel, and I would love to work with him. And Keith Jarrett; I don’t know what kind of dinner partner he’d be, but he’s a great musician.

premiere { faces PAGE TURNER In Chris Kuzneski’s newest novel, The Lost Throne, his characters travel to Greece and Russia in an attempt to solve an ancient mystery. “My books are the equivalent of the big-budget blockbuster movie,” Kuzneski says. With the world as a backdrop, his most recent novel has achieved best-seller success in the United Kingdom and doesn’t show signs of slowing down in the United States. A fan of Clive Cussler and James Patterson, Kuzneski, who lives in Tampa, says he writes the kind of stories he wants to read. “If you’re having a tough day at work or a problem with your social life, you can pick up my book and be entertained,” he says.

TRUE SURVIVOR Artist and St. Petersburg native Allison Massari’s life changed forever when she was severely injured in two car accidents within a few years of each other. After suffering burns over 30 percent of her body, she took her healing process and used it as a way to help others. “The gift that came out of it has given me such a grasp on the fact that hope is really real, that there are ways to help people,” Massari says. The passion that had filled her artwork spread to founding the Roger Pepper Adventure Camps for teens suffering from burn injuries. “At this point in my life, I want to be stepping out from behind the easel and really connecting with people,” she says. —S.H.

LOOKING BACK As a history student in college, Rodney Kite-Powell never thought of working in a museum. But as the curator of history at the Tampa Bay History Center since 1997, Kite-Powell says he has found diversity and purpose. “Even the people from [Tampa] don’t realize how rich our history is and how deep our roots go,” he says. The center works to connect Florida’s past to its present and encourages people to experience history firsthand. I love the limitless possibilities of the little black dress.”

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FEET Don’t get between a girl and her shoes. “Shoes for me are your soul, in more ways than one,” says Thomas. “You can change any outfit when you change out the shoe. You can tell so much about a person walking down the street by looking at her shoes. It all connects back to who you are, self-expression through style.”

Returning to the Hotel Jerome after a day on the ski slopes of Aspen, Colorado, evokes a vivid memory. My mother is standing in the doorway of our home in Connecticut. “Don’t track snow in the house,” she says.

To be honest, the Hotel Jerome is much nicer than the house I grew up in. Yet here is the doorman welcoming me to walk on the plush lobby carpet in my wet ski boots.

What a lobby it is. Flanking a crackling fire are plush, padded sofas and chairs,

tempting guests to curl up and relax after a day on the chilly slopes. High above, two deer silently oversee the comings and goings. Bowls of fruit rest on old round tables. Light shines softly from the restored original fixtures.

More than 120 years ago, Macy’s Department Store co-owner Jerome B. Wheeler envisioned a grand hostelry in a booming, silver-mining town. The hotel, which he naturally named after himself, was designed to emulate some of the great hotels

of Europe—London’s Claridge’s and Paris’ George V. It introduced electric lighting to the western mountains and featured indoor plumbing, 15 bathrooms for 90 guest rooms, hot and cold running water, steam heat and an elevator. Prices were a hefty $3 to $4 a night. It soon became the center of Aspen’s aspirant social life.

The historic theme is carried into the guest rooms and suites. While the rooms do hold a certain times-gone-by feel, they are filled with contemporary amenities

including 300-thread-count sheets, oversized bathtubs (some with Jacuzzis) and high-speed Internet access.

Downstairs in the elegant Garden Terrace restaurant, the menu offers inspired, as well as traditional, choices: pan-fried crab with red chili oil; a 10-ounce flank steak with a side of country-style mac and cheese; or—yes!—a perfectly grilled elk loin with persimmon compote.

commercial buildings to the west end’s time capsule cottages. Cowboy couture is king where silver once tipped the scales.

Wheeler brought class and class brought culture. The Aspen Music Festival is worldrenowned. The ballet and Writers’ Foundation only suggest the year-round offerings.

Of course, the major allure of the majestic mountains of Colorado is skiing. I ski all four mountains—Aspen, Buttermilk, Aspen Highlands and Snowmass—on an Aspen ski pass, shuttling in the hotel’s

vans. Aspen Mountain is steep terrain and fast skiers. Buttermilk is known for its ski school and absolutely no crowds, so I have fresh powder to myself. I ski groomed trails on gently sloping hills for a wonderfully relaxing day.

At the base of Aspen Highlands, the Highland Center’s mammoth stone fireplace and beat-up leather furniture give the lodge the feel of a super log cabin. Intentionally unchic, it’s the locals’ favorite.

Perhaps skiers come to challenge the Highland Bowl, where the hardy hike the ridge to the crest of the bowl-shaped collection of double-diamond runs.

The much larger Snowmass is a great place for families. Beginner, intermediate and expert runs are so numerous they

never need be repeated. My favorite is the 5.3-mile “Long Shot.”

Back at Hotel Jerome, the J-Bar is packed with skiers. A popular hangout for guests, it’s also a place to do some celebrity spotting. In addition to the signature JRita, another popular drink is steeped in history.

The creamy and potent Aspen Crud, made with vanilla ice cream blended with plenty of bourbon, is a holdover from Prohibition days, when area miners used to enjoy this just-for-grown-ups version of a milkshake.

A dog the size of a pony mingles with the bar patrons. “The Jerome is pet-friendly,” says the bartender, nodding at the beast.

“Everyone in the J-Bar is family.” Sipping on an Aspen Crud, I felt right at home.

No matter how many shoe horns you use, no matter how much liquid Teflon you spray around the nether regions, and no matter how sharp a stick you use to prod, Grandma simply won’t squeeze into the back of a Porsche 911.

Yes, theoretically, Porsche’s legendary sports car does have what may appear to be a couple of rear seats. But unless your name is Mini-Me, there’s no way you’re going to accommodate any human form back there. That’s the trouble with a 911. So many bachelors buy them for their testosterone-spiking performance. Then they wed, start a family and, after endless resistance, the inevitable realization sets in: The Porsche has got to go.

Of course, the good herr doctors at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen HQ realized this and, back in 2002, introduced a 911-on-stilts to the world, otherwise known as the Cayenne SUV. It gave adoring 911 lovers the opportunity to keep a Porsche in the driveway and, at the same time, have something capacious enough to carry the kids, their Pack ’n Plays, and Grandma too.

While the Cayenne did its job admirably—it’s still the best seller in the Porsche lineup—there’s something that still doesn’t sit quite right about a tall-riding Porsche that’s capable of scaling Kanchenjunga.

That’s why the arrival this month of the impressive new Porsche Panamera four-door sedan will be greeted

by Porsche-istas with the same level of enthusiasm as the average 13-year-old greets a Twitter-enabled iPhone.

This is a proper, stretch-out spacious four-seater, with real room in the back for real people. And despite that ski-slope roofline, there’s even impressive amounts of headroom in the rear. There’s real practicality here too, courtesy of a high-lifting tailgate, and fold-down rear seats that triple the load space. Two sets of golf clubs? No problem.

But before we summon up the superlatives and go all slack-jawed about the car’s awesome performance and curve-carving handling, we need to share a word or two about the Panamera’s, er, styling.

I know we all adore the timeless, iconic lines of the fabled 911. But seemingly chainsawing one in half and grafting in an extra 20 inches and two additional doors results in a silhouette that verges on the awkward. Pretty, in a Maserati Quattroporte or Mercedes-Benz CLS or new Jaguar XJ way, it’s certainly not.

Surely the time has come to release the Porsche design folk from their “everything-must-look-like-a-911” shackles and allow them to create a new Porsche design

language. We’re ready. But as the Cayenne sport-ute so rightly proved, Porsches don’t have to be objects of visual beauty; they just have to go like the wind.

And mashing the “go” pedal on a 500horsepower Panamera Turbo summons up the kind of performance that would shame an F/A-18 Hornet fighter on takeoff. Sixty mph flashes up from standstill in a tongueswallowing 3.8 seconds, with the relentless thrust not tailing off until the speedo is displaying 188 mph.

The F/A-18 analogy is relevant here because the Turbo comes with a four-section rear wing that deploys, and angles, in stages.

By the time the car reaches 127 mph, the wing has a 10-degree angle of attack to increase downforce and resist any urges the Panamera might have of going airborne at 188.

As the Cayenne proved so well, Porsche is the maestro at giving big heavyweights the DNA of an agile sports car. Despite tipping the scales at more than 4,300 pounds in Turbo form, the new Panamera is lighter on its feet than Warren Sapp on Dancing with the Stars.

With a full compliment of traction-enhancing, computer-driven hardware— everything from adaptive damping to active antiroll bars—the big Panamera seemingly defies physics with its breathtaking ability to blast around corners. It is a fabulousdriving machine, with surgically precise steering, no-lean cornering and a ride quality that, while sports-car-firm, is magical in its absorbency of lumps and bumps.

A trio of Panamera models will be available starting this fall, kicking off with the “base” rear-drive Panamera S at $89,800, along with an all-wheel-drive Panamera 4S for $93,800.

Both feature a 400-horsepower 4.8-liter V8.

The range topper is that thundering allwheel-drive Turbo at a cool $132,600. All will feature Porsche’s hugely impressive sevenspeed, double-clutch PDK automatic.

Looking forward, in a year’s time, the range will swell with the availability of a 300hp base V6 model. And come 2011, there will even be a gas-electric hybrid version.

One thing’s for certain: Even with electric power, it’ll go like the wind. ◆

Mindy Grossman CEO OF HSN INC. Mindy Grossman’s route to CEO of the St. Petersburgbased Home Shopping Network (HSN) has been circuitous indeed. As a literature and philosophy major, Grossman was bound for law school as she wrapped up her senior year of college, until one night, “I woke up and said, ‘This is not what I want to do with my life,’” she recalls. “I wanted to be in business, in a more creative field.” Thus began her 30-year career in the retail and apparel industry.

After holding senior positions for internationally known brands like Ralph Lauren’s Polo and Chaps divisions, Tommy Hilfiger and Nike, Grossman made the leap to retail with HSN in 2006. Under her guard, HSN has become a publicly traded company on NASDAQ, bringing the company to the verge of a retail revolution. “We [at HSN] are at this incredible cross

section of commerce, content, media and technology,” Grossman says. “It is an incredible moment in time where all these things are converging together. There is a tremendous amount of things that we are doing and can do; it is an exciting place to be right now.” It is that excitement that helps propel Grossman in bringing brands to life. “I have to be passionate about what I do. I have to believe in it.”

And when asked what has made Grossman so successful, well, that’s simple. “I’m not afraid to take risks. I’m not afraid to do things that people don’t expect me to do,” she says. “I have the confidence to make that lateral move to do something different, take that path less traveled. I guess it all started that morning I woke up and said, ‘There is a different path for me in life.’”

Judy Genshaft PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA As president of the University of South Florida, Judy Genshaft has made the pursuit of raising the standards of education a career. Appointed president in 2000, Genshaft has had an impressive list of accomplishments, including raising admission standards for USF, expanding campus growth, increasing degree programs for regional campuses as well as a successful submission of separate accreditation for the USF St. Petersburg campus. Under her guidance, USF also became the first university in Florida and the first major public research university in the southeastern United States to establish a Confucius Institute, a partnership between the Chinese government and educational institutions around the world.

Genshaft has studied social work and psychology; she has a master’s in school psychology and a doctorate in counseling psychology. Her research always led back to the relationship between scholastics and students.

“I have done some interesting research in a variety of areas, including math anxiety in adolescent girls, examining intelligence and assessment, studying the challenges of working with gifted children in school settings, and examining ways to help families and children succeed,” she says. This research has helped develop what Genshaft believes a university’s mission should be—“to educate and do research for the betterment of society.”

When asked what the future holds for USF, Genshaft says the possibilities are boundless. “Upward and onward!,” she enthuses. “The growth and success of this university is so important to our local economy and to the health and sustainability of our community that I cannot allow USF to slow down. I truly believe we are elevating our community on a daily basis.”

Sheila Johnson CEO OF SALAMANDER HOSPITALITY Sheila Johnson is a woman with vision. Locally she is known as the CEO of Salamander Hospitality, which includes a number of luxury properties along the East Coast, including the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor. On an international level, Johnson’s reach has gone far beyond that of hospitality. A successful entrepreneur, Johnson was cofounder of the BET Network. She also is the only African-American woman to have ownership in three professional sports franchises—Washington Capitals (NHL), Washington Wizards (NBA) and the Washington Mystics (WNBA). She is an impassioned philanthropist, taking on roles like global ambassador for CARE, a humanitarian organization fighting poverty, and with local interests like the Children’s Cancer Center through her Innisbrook Resort. Johnson has also added filmmaker to her resume, debuting Kicking It at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and A Powerful Noise at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival.

“I have always been very motivated to follow my passions,” says Johnson. “Even as a child I had a love for music, the arts and entertaining, as well as sports. Ultimately, this easily translated into an interest in the hospitality industry.”

Johnson now plans to concentrate on improving her luxury properties under Salamander Hospitality as well as create new films and documentaries.

When asked if she had any advice for women, Johnson shares some insight on how she has become the woman she is today.

“Accept the challenges that come your way and meet them head-on,” she says. “Learn from them and use those experiences to succeed. Remember to always learn everything you can from others and make sure you are keeping company with other successful people that you admire and from whom you can learn.”

Beth Ann Morean PHILANTHROPIST The arts have been one of the most influential and driving forces throughout Beth Ann Morean’s life. “My mother was an artist. My father built a great big easel for my mom, and we always had a great big oil painting going on in the living room,” remembers Morean. “It was always turpentine, linseed oil and oil paint all over the place.”

After a successful run in real estate and as a principal shareholder in Jabil Circuit, Morean turned her attention to philanthropy and the arts. “I have been extremely blessed in business and because of that, I want to give back,” she says. “I want to make my community a great place to live for everybody.”

This art of giving has gone to reach many charities and organizations throughout the Tampa Bay area, but none is as noteworthy as her contribution of more than $10 million to the Arts Center in St. Petersburg, which is now named after her. “The mission of education and the hands-on experience is what really made me passionate about the Arts Center,” Morean says. And as a clay artist herself, Morean takes full advantage of the Center’s facilities, teaching classes weekly—and taking a few herself.

The future of the Morean Arts Center owes much to Morean’s dedicated work to make the center selfsustaining by bringing the only permanent collection of glass artist Dale Chihuly’s work to St. Petersburg. The new building will include a glass hot shop, giving the Arts Center yet another medium of art to share with the residents of Tampa Bay. “The arts are such a huge component of our city, and I think the new Arts Center will add so much to that cultural experience,” she says.

Pam Iorio MAYOR OF TAMPA With dreams of public service dating back to childhood, there is little surprise Mayor Pam Iorio has made a career in politics, tossing her hat into the political arena at the age of 25. “I have to say, I’m probably a little bit unusual in that when I was a little girl in elementary school I thought I would have a career in public service,” she says.

Now serving her second term in the mayoral office in the fifty-third largest city in the United States, Iorio has used her position to help propel Tampa into the twentyfirst century with initiatives for a light rail system that would give people a greater opportunity to explore the city, kick starting a downtown resurgence with projects like the Riverwalk, and creating a cultural menagerie with the Tampa Museum of Art, the Glazer Children’s Museum and the History Center of Tampa. But when asked what the biggest accomplishment throughout her career has been, hiring Police Chief Stephen Hogue and dropping crime rates by 46 percent since taking office tops the list. “I love this community,” says Iorio. “When I see a deficiency I want to change it.”

Iorio views the future as the next frontier. “I have never operated with a master plan in life,” she says. “I look at life as a series of challenges and adventures, and I am sure when my term ends in March of 2011, there will be other challenges that await.”

Turning your home into a healthy oasis filled with natural, responsibly crafted materials and furniture is no easy task. Just ask Darren Brinkley, the founder and president of REAL Building. In early 2008 Brinkley completed his first ecofriendly St. Petersburg residence, becoming Florida’s first Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold home.

LEED is a benchmark for the construction, design and operation of high-performance green buildings spearheaded by the United States Green Building Council.

The home was built with a soy-based spray insulation and light-colored siding to reduce heat gain. A 1,000-gallon rainwater cistern collects runoff water and recycles it to irrigate the landscape, while a graywater system reuses bath and laundry water to flush toilets. The home’s most beautiful trait is the flooring and cabinets made from bamboo, which is a grass, not a tree, and therefore has a short growth cycle of about five years, unlike maple and oak.

Refresh Interiors President Gene McDonald, who worked on the St. Petersburg home project, builds kitchen and bathroom cabinetry and wall units with bamboo, bamboo mix, sunflower seeds and kirei, a wood substitute.

The greening of the home continues with furniture. At Bambú Tropical in Dunedin, owner Don Eichar creates bamboo beds, tiki huts and bars, tables and ceilings. Eichar also incorporates reclaimed teak into his designs. William Dunn of Liberty Woodworking in St. Petersburg handcrafts custom woodwork—bar tops, bathroom counters, doors and vanities—using reclaimed strips of wood from nearby wood processing manufacturing plants and fallen timber.

It’s possible to feature low-energy and LED lighting throughout your home to reduce energy bills and carbon footprints with Aurora Lighting, whose U.S. distribution office is in Clearwater.

GOOD EATING Eating green takes on different meanings for different people. For some, it’s growing and eating food without fertilizers or chemicals. For others, it means a diet of raw food and no animal products, or simply supporting local farmers.

For choosy moms, Marlene Sundquist’s organic toddler and baby food company, Seedlings, makes purees and heartier meals with fresh fruits and vegetables, the choicest meats and proteins and no artificial ingredients or additives. The Broc & Cheese and the Far East Veggies meals and the Peas on Earth puree are kid favorites. Custom-made meals are available for toddlers with food allergies.

Tampa, a strong proponent of eating local produce, has many Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms that sell shares to the public. “Shareholders” receive seasonal produce each week throughout the growing season.

Both Gateway Organic Farm in Clearwater and Urban Oasis Hydroponic Farm in Tampa provide CSA shares. At Gateway, organic and gourmet vegetables, herbs and flowers are grown on the resuscitated, composted land of a once dilapidated landscape nursery, while Urban Oasis Hydroponic Farm (as the name implies) employs a hydroponic method of growing, using mineral

nutrient solutions instead of soil. This means no pesticide, fertilizer or chemicals are used in the growing process. Urban Oasis’ primary crops include tomatoes, lettuce, peppers and cucumbers, while their seasonal crops vary from broccoli and okra to herbs, green beans and zucchini.

One of the most popular farms in the area, Tampa’s Sweetwater Organic Community Farm also offers CSA shares. The farm hosts the popular Sweetwater Sunday Farmers’ Market and vendors sell organic fruits and vegetables and prepared foods like organic smoothies and veggie burgers. Many neighboring cities are home to dozens of green and farmers markets like Safety Harbor Farmers Market, Ybor City Fresh Market, Downtown Clearwater Farmer’s Market and Brandon Farmers Market.

If you want to participate in green eating without having to cook, head to Grass Root Organic Restaurant in Lakeland or Tampa. Owners Spencer Greene and Sabrina Aird serve imaginative vegan, vegetarian or raw/living dishes.

The raw food is prepared at no more than 115 degrees to preserve the living enzymes and nutrients; vegan and vegetarian dishes feature locally grown herbs, spices and vegetables.

Sabrina’s Favorite Sandwich, made with raw onion bread, homemade hummus, cashew cheese, live sprouts and romaine lettuce, will leave you happy and full—but leave room for dessert. The vegan Key lime cheesecake is heaven.

STYLE CONSCIOUS It wasn’t too long ago when the words “organic clothing” conveyed images of rough burlap sack-like shirts and dresses. Today, the words have a softer image, and local and national companies are jumping on the bandwagon.

There is ample green clothing for little ones starting with Chi Chi Amor in Tampa. Moms Danielle O’Connor and Shari Feldman work with Guatemalan textile producers to produce organic children clothing and accessories like rattles, diaper bags and stuffed toys.

OBLI Organics in Sarasota also is committed to kids. OBLI products use 100-percent-certified organic resources produced under Fair Trade practices. Its children’s T-shirts sport funky green messages like “generation green” that are printed using non-PVC screenprinting.

You can help spread the green message by wearing The Naked Hippie adult-size T-shirts, made from U.S.-grown organic cotton, that feature Jiffy, its hippie mascot, and other gogreen cartoons and images.

Jennifer Dutkowsky’s Why Not Boutique is stocked with cotton, bamboo, soy and hemp dresses, skirts and T-shirts and accessories. She sells almost a dozen ecofriendly lines such as the Green Label Organic and HT Naturals. Susan Swander, owner of Illume Eco-Boutique in Belleair and Dunedin, sells Fair Trade conscious fashions made in Africa and India, such as René Geneva’s line made from a blend of wild-crafted silk and bark fabric and the Brazilian Escama purses made from recycled aluminum tabs.

At Aalamwaar, owner Viji Reddy combines environmentally friendly fabrics and responsible production. The apparel line of dresses, tunics, scarves and saris is created using natural dyes that are pressed onto cloth using wooden blocks and screens, then embroiderers embellish the cloth with silk thread.

Well-known designers like Phillip Lim and Stella McCartney also are getting in to the act.

Lim has launched Go Green Go collections under his 3.1 Phillip Lim label, and his spring 2009 collection featured clothing made with chemical-free dyes. Stella McCartney always has integrated organic materials in her denim, accessories and lingerie collections, but she designs an extensive collection featuring organic hemp tailored dresses, silk or wool trousers and wooden sandals. For a finished ensemble, step out in vegan and natural linen shoes made by olsenHaus.

EARTH’S FAVORITE RIDES It makes great environmental sense to go electric, particularly for short road trips and running errands around town. The Zenn car and Vectrix scooters are small Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEV) that have no emissions or noise, and can be recharged by plugging them in to a standard outlet. Barney’s Yamaha Suzuki of Brandon carries the Vectrix scooter while Golf & Electric Vehicles in Orlando has a selection of Zenns. For a more eye-catching ride, Fisker Automotive’s Karma is a luxury plug-in hybrid that does its part to help Mother Earth (for more on the Karma and other “green” cars, see page 62).

Beauty products often are the answer to looking good, but there’s also an ugly side to them. Studies show that a product may have has many as 10 chemicals such as parabens and sodium laureth sulfate. We ask for paper instead of plastic. We put our recycling bins out for collection. We even watched Al Gore’s movie, An Inconvenient Truth, all the way to the end without dozing off.

(Well, almost.) But when it comes to the luxury car or truck in our driveway, it hasn’t been as easy to do our bit for the environment. But times are changing, and so are vehicles’ green profiles. Here are 10 luxury automobiles that are good for the planet—and our driving instincts.

Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid You’ll love this. A big, high-zoot S-Class Mercedes that can average more than 26 miles to the gallon on the highway and deliver the lowest CO2 emissions in the luxury segment. If this brand new S400 Hybrid were any greener, its middle name would be Kermit. Mercedes engineers went for the simple but elegant solution of slotting a skinny, lithium-ion battery-driven 20-horsepower electric motor between its new high-efficiency 3.5-liter V6 and seven-speed auto. This high-tech combo provides a healthy 295 total horses—enough to zip the big Benz to 60 mph from standstill in just 7.2 seconds. It won’t run on electric power alone, but it comes with such eco features as stop-start and regenerative braking that puts juice back in the battery when you hit the brakes.

BMW 755ih Hybrid BMW adopts the same “mild hybrid” technology as Mercedes’ S400 Hybrid for its upcoming ecofriendly 755ih, which is due in showrooms next spring.

Only this time, BMW sticks to its “Ultimate Driving Machine” mantra by coupling the 20-horsepower electric booster to its thundering 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and eight-speed automatic. The resulting combo packs a whopping 455 horsepower and the kind of torque that can uproot tree stumps. Yet with its stop-start feature and regenerative braking, it should improve fuel economy by around 15 percent compared to the regular 750i. That puts it at around 25 miles per gallon on the highway. The real tragedy, however, is that BMW doesn’t offer its remarkable new 740d twin-turbo diesel stateside. Its staggering performance is matched by 40 miles per gallon economy and best-in-class CO2 emissions.

Lexus LS 600hL Imagine having the on/off switch of a nuclear power plant under your right foot. One press of the gas pedal and you lunge forward like the Starship Enterprise going into warp speed. This is the wondrous sensation of piloting Lexus’ flagship LS 600hL hybrid. A 240-cell pack of nickel/metal-hydrid batteries juice a big electric motor that, in turn, boosts the power of the Lexus’ big 5-liter V8. The result is a combined 438-horsepower. And all that power is delivered to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic. The good news is that the car drives like it has a V12 under the hood. The bad news is that the car’s fuel efficiency is ho-hum at best—20 city, 22 highway. But forget about the economy and enjoy it for what it is—arguably the world’s most luxurious car.

Audi Q7 TDI I’m an enormous fan of modern “clean” diesels. Apart from offering dramatic improvements in fuel economy, range and exhaust emissions, they are true torque meisters. Come up behind a slower vehicle, step on the throttle, and they deliver the kind of low-rev thrust normally only experienced by the guy who gets shot out of the Ringling Brothers circus cannon. That’s why I love Audi’s new sevenpassenger Q7 TDI. With 406 pound-feet of torque from its twin-turbo 3-liter V6, it delivers a bigger punch than George Foreman in his pregrilling days. That, and 25-to-the-gallon real world highway economy, 600 miles between fill-ups and 25 percent fewer emissions than an equivalent gasoline motor. For that road trip to see Uncle Waldo in Des Moines, there’s no finer long-distance cruising machine.

Fisker Karma Some crystal ball gazers are already predicting this could be the luxury sports sedan of the future. Looking curvier than Beyoncé in Spandex, the low-slung, Lexus LS460-sized, four-door Karma is the work of ace California-based Danish designer Henrik Fisker. Together with military contractor Quantum Technologies, he’s created a clever gas-electric hybrid that couples 5.8-second 0-60 performance with real environmental friendliness. The secret is its bank of advanced lithium-ion batteries that amp up two whopping 201-horsepower electric motors. Fisker claims they’ll give the Karma a range of 50 miles on electric power only. Need more range? That’s when the GM Ecotec four-cylinder kicks in to extend the range to more than 300 miles. The highly anticipated Karma is scheduled to go on sale next spring with prices starting at $87,900. There’s even a convertible version in the works.

Tesla Roadster Okay, I fess up. I was the first to predict that Tesla would end up out of cash and on the scrap heap before its first car reached production. Now where’s that humble pie to eat? By the middle of this year, the Silicon Valley start-up had delivered its 500th $101,500 electric Roadster and seemingly still has plenty of orders on the books. Celeb owners include George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Michael Dell and a host of others. Ecocar lovers seem to revel in its staggering supercar performance (0-60 in 3.7 seconds) coupled with a 240-plus mile range and a recharge cost of $4. I’m still no fan of its kit car-like looks and the $100-grand sticker still makes me shudder, but the little Tesla is a real success story. Me? I can’t wait for the four-door, mini-Maserati Model S sedan that’s due in 2011.

The folks at Ford are now showing that a high-tech V6 can do the same job, while using a lot less gas and producing far fewer emissions. Its new 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 that’s powering the surprisingly sexy Lincoln MKT seven-seat, all-wheel drive crossover, does a fine job of delivering V8 thrust but with 22-to-the-gallon highway economy. The beauty of the EcoBoost is that all 350 pound-feet of torque is delivered from just 3,500 rpm, which means awesome passing power and slingshot acceleration out of a tight curve.

Cadillac Escalade Hybrid When gas prices spiraled past $4 a gallon, nothing symbolized automotive gas-hog excess more than Cadillac’s lardy Escalade SUV. Trouble is, if you love to transport seven in the lap of luxury and maybe haul a boat at the same time, there’s little to match the leather-lined comfort of an Escalade. So to project a more ecofriendly image, and even gain a nod of acceptance from the Prius crowd, the Escalade Hybrid makes sense. Mating a heavy-duty 300-volt electric motor to a 6-liter V8 results in 20-to-the-gallon economy in the EPA’s city cycle, which is a 50-percent improvement over the regular gas version. You also should see 21 to the gallon on the highway. Probably more important, however, are the nine badges and decals on the body proclaiming the Escalade’s hybrid status. Once each year, we gaze into a crystal ball filled with wine, and attempt to forecast what consumers will be drinking in the 12 months to come.

While this may be a challenging time for the world’s premium wine estates, it’s an exciting period for consumers. Competition is fierce, discounts are common, and there’s never been a better time to shop for your favorite bottles than in today’s buyer’s market. Here are some trends to watch for in the year to come:

MAIL ORDER MADNESS Many of the top California wines are sold through mailing lists, and these lists have historically been difficult to penetrate. As demand for high-end Cabernet slows down, that situation is changing. Pick up the phone and ask to be added to the mailing list for your favorite Napa property, and you may be surprised at the result.

NO THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER Worldwide sales of Australian wine have declined for a number of reasons, and serious discounts are commonplace. If you’re a fan of full-bodied, juicy Shiraz, make a wish list of the ones you’ve always wanted to try. Give the list to your favorite retailer, and have him or her make inquiries on your behalf. It’s time to stock up.

GIVE YOURSELF THE BOOT The same goes for many of the best Italian wines. Some of the top Barolos, Barbarescos and Brunellos are still available, and the dollar is stronger than it was one year ago. Of course, the current vintages of these classics won’t be drinkable for years, but it’s a great opportunity to build your cellar.

Even better, the top wines are surprisingly affordable. Catena Alta Malbec, the flagship bottling from Bodega Catena Zapata, sells for $50; compare that to $125 for a bottle of Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon.

TOUTING TEMPRANILLO The best Spanish wines have become more and more available in this area, and some of them are spectacular. Rioja Reservas and Gran Reservas are pre-aged and ready to drink. Ribera del Duero continues to be the most exciting region for red wine; look for the reliable standards (Tinto Pesquera and Vega Sicilia) as well as the emerging new estates (Abadia Retuerta and Numanthia).

No sooner does the iconic IKEA open in Tampa than we start seeing tony, modern living room furniture—complete with a green Astroturf that’s rolled up every night—outside Rawbar Sushi, bordering North Ashley Drive. It’s all part of restaurateur James DeVito’s cool vision to take Tampa to the next echelon of chi-chi dining.

DeVito, a former Wall Streeter, left his first career in 2001 to pursue his culinary dreams in South Florida. Since his arrival in Tampa, he has anchored the cheering section for the promise of converting Tampa’s lackluster nightlife into a destination date. “I love downtown; it’s coming alive,” says DeVito. And he is doing his part in assuring that happens. He has successfully delivered part one of his two-part punch—Taps Wine and Beer Bar—and as of last June, has launched Rawbar Sushi, a stylish 97-seat restaurant, that turns heads and raw fish into an art form.

DeVito, now a culinary school graduate, admits, “I can cook, but not sushi.” So he had the good fortune to lure pedigreed Chef Naohiro Higuchi from Miami to head his kitchen. Higuchi, whose global culinary credentials render Rawbar right out of this world, hails from the famed Nobu restaurant, having worked at the upscale chain’s outpost at Nassau’s Atlantis resort. It is obvious that Rawbar encompasses both Nobu’s notorious drama and finesse with its ingenious preparations and presentations like ocean-fresh

fish lightly laced with a sampling of pungent herbs and spices and exotic combinations of Asian vegetables and Caribbean flavors.

Rawbar’s fare is described as a “fusion approach to fine Japanese cuisine,” which means not just sushi, but inventive hot and cold plates as well—think tender braised short ribs over a sweet daikon radish, and bite-sized chicken yakitori skewers. Outstanding cold plates include the smoky, tantalizing octopus salad with kaiware, tomato, red onion and ume dressing, and the salmon wrapped asparagus with five-spice soy. There’s specialty nigiri and sashimi—including an Omakase (chef’s choice sampler), some torched, some tempura-style. Rawbar’s rolls are so exquisite they make other area sushi bars look like fast food, a phrase DeVito uses in comparison. We tried the arare shrimp tempura—rice puff-crusted shrimp tempura with a zingy peanut chili sauce, and the eel coconut roll with cucumber and roasted coconut flakes in a balsamic soy reduction then the edgy spicy tuna with Dou ban jiang, balsamic and chili sauce. Unfortunately, to DeVito’s frustration, there are those who still stick to the basics, ordering only the California roll. Jokingly he says, “I’m thinking of taking it off the menu.”

Food this stunning can only be enjoyed in equally beautiful surroundings, which DeVito designed and delivered. Aside from being one of the anchor tenants to Skypoint, one of Tampa’s

most luxurious high-rise condominiums, Rawbar entices passers-by to stop in. The fun and frivolity begin on the sidewalk, where lucky patrons can enjoy a cocktail in comfy digs nestled on the grass-green carpet, idly contemplating commuters as they head out of the city. Inside, the hip, black-clad waitresses glide within a space accented with mirrors, chandeliers and silver candelabras. The bar area offers ample elbowroom for sushi and drinks, including the Japanese Mojito infused with sake. Since Rawbar stays open until 1 a.m. on the weekend, the nightly crowd is sophisticated and diverse, beginning with a parade of business types and theatergoers, and ultimately culminating in late-night dates.

MUSIC MAN With the start of the 2009-2010 season, music director Stefan Sanderling is guiding the Florida Orchestra through its forty-second year of performing internationally renowned compositions with nothing short of musical finesse. Born in Germany and now residing in St. Petersburg, Sanderling made his North American debut at the 1989 Tanglewood Summer Music Festival and has since led such esteemed orchestras as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Called “one of the world’s great conductors” by the American Record Guide, Sanderling delights audiences with his musicianship as well as his personal charm. Under his leadership, the Florida Orchestra performs more than 120 concerts annually in the Tampa Bay area, kicking this season off with Rhythms on Fire on October 9.
