November skies
Ithink many folks here in the South may agree when I say, I’m so glad it’s November. We’ve had a rough start to fall, with hurricane season going out with more than one bang. I want to take a moment to send love and strength to everyone who was affected by the storms. Helene wreaked havoc on western North Carolina and its beautiful mountain towns (which truly breaks my heart) and caused devasation to parts of South Carolina, Georgia, and our beloved home state of Florida. As I sit here typing this letter, Milton is currently lurking in the Gulf, getting ready to slam Florida’s west coast in a few days and blow across the state, causing potential flooding and wind damage on both coasts. I hope everyone stays safe, and my heart goes out to all who have lost loved ones, animals, and homes. If you are okay, please consider ways you can help others who weren’t so lucky. I admit, it feels a bit strange to talk about our Home Issue now. So I will keep things short and sweet. In our November issue, we take a peek inside two incredible local homes—one on Jupiter Island (page 48), the other in Fort Pierce (page 60)—where designers Jackie Armour and Ally Whalen helped bring their clients’ dreams to life. We also chat with Kiki Norman, another extraordinary designer and the wife of pro golfer Greg Norman. The Normans recently bought two units at The Ritz-Carlton Residences, a project now under construction in Palm Beach Gardens. They plan to combine the units and make the space their new home base, and Kiki is busy working her magic on the interior design. Hear what she has planned and learn more about the luxury Ritz-Carlton Residences in “Luxe Living,” beginning on page 54.
And on page 66, get to know six local designers and influencers, who share some of the people and things that inspire them in their daily lives. “Style makers” Brittany Kozerski of Jade Swim, Dana Small of Matilda’s, designer Milly Park, influencer Blaire Rogers of Texaflora, and Beth Aschenbach and Danielle Norcross of Palm Beach Lately reveal their style icons, go-to outfits, style hacks, and more. Enjoy!
Peace and blessings,

It’s all about YOU!
As the spirit of the holiday season kicks off with Thanksgiving and leads us into December’s festive parties and celebrations, I always sit back and think about what I am grateful for before the year comes to a close. This month, I would like to dedicate my publisher’s letter to giving thanks to the many subscribers, charitable organizations, and businesses that have supported us over the years. I am always thrilled to hear how much the magazine is loved and to see our following continue to grow. It has been an amazing journey, and I want to thank each one of you for your loyalty to Stuart Magazine.
As part of Palm Beach Media Group, our team produces dozens of titles across the state in addition to the 10 issues of Stuart Magazine every year. It takes a village: our editorial team, marketing and sales staff, production people, accounting department… Each plays an important role in the success of our magazine (#teamwork).
In our November issue (and in every issue), we run the Home Resource Guide special advertising section and the Flavor Dining Guide, which may offer you some ideas for your home needs and holiday dining this season. And this month’s Luxury Homes Real Estate Guide advertising section is full of potential new homes if you are looking (or have a friend who is interested in our area). Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me regarding your marketing needs.
As you get ready for the holidays, please remember to keep our local businesses in mind for your shopping needs. Have a look at the Downtown Stuart and Harbour Bay Plaza special advertising sections inside, which can be great destinations for one-stop shopping. There are so many fantastic local places, many of which advertise with us, where you can find some great gift ideas for any occasion (#shoplocal).
As I mention in every letter, be sure to visit stuartmagazine.com and sign up for our weekly Insider’s Guide newsletter to stay in the know about everything that is happening around town. You can order a new subscription to our print magazine (or renew an existing one) on our website too—it would make a great gift for family or friends! Take a minute to follow us on Instagram too: @stuartmagazine_
One more thing: don’t forget to roll back your clock an hour on the first Sunday of November! I always remember what time of year we need to change the clocks by thinking of this saying: “fall” back, which happens this month, and “spring” forward, when we add that hour back in March.
I hope to see you around this season!

Pattern PLAY THE LOCAL

Jupiter-based designer Jackie Armour has always loved mixing patterns. And she is thrilled to see more people welcoming the trend into their homes. “We are seeing clients gradually embracing this trend in subtle ways,” she says. “More is more!” Earlier this year, Armour worked with a client who wanted to bring coastal ambience into their home at Old Marsh Golf Club. The designer’s first thought was color. “We wanted to introduce unexpected colors instead of the typical coastal navy or soft blue,” she says. “The turquoise and seafoam were a fun departure. Of course, we balanced that with neutral walls and a few neutral pieces throughout.” In the entry foyer, Armour set a patterned Stout fabric bench from Vanguard Furniture against a wall adorned with palm leaf–patterned
wallpaper (custom from Etsy). “We knew we wanted drama at the entry, but we wanted it to be subtle and sophisticated,” she says. “The wallpaper was a bold choice—I love that the color is unexpected and not your typical green leaves. The seafoam, teal, and neutral tones set this paper apart.” Armour’s advice to those looking to dip their toes into the trend: “Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone when it comes to color and pattern. One easy way to tackle this is with accessories like pillows or throws.” And if you’re looking to incorporate the seafoam hue into your home, she suggests mixing it with sandy beiges, yellow tones, soft greens, deep ink blues, and creams. “The results are calming and sophisticated,” says Armour. jmainteriordesign.com—Michelle Lee Ribeiro
A Cup of LOVE
ENJOY A CUP OF JOE IN PORT ST. LUCIE WHILE GIVING CATS IN NEED OF A HOME A LITTLE BIT OF LOVIN’
BY PAIGE FEIGENBAUM
This summer, coffee started purr-colating in Port St. Lucie when the area’s very first cat café opened in June. The new shop is the creation of local resident Melony Zaravelis, who first encountered the creative concept during a visit to Omaha in 2021. She was intrigued, and after checking out about a dozen more similar businesses, she left behind her full-time job as an accountant to open The Kitty Cup.
The Zaravelis family is passionate about animal rescue. Melony’s husband, Angelo, and their daughter, Victoria, now 17, began volunteering with the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast in 2019. During the pandemic in 2020, the family fostered a cat named Frankie and ended up adopting him. That’s when Melony joined her family as a volunteer at the Humane Society— and the Zaravelises have since adopted two more cats, Bean and Ken, and fostered many more.

“I wanted to provide a better quality of life while they waited for their forever home,” Zaravelis says of deciding to open The Kitty Cup. “They get to live in a giant room, roaming freely, as opposed to a kennel in a stressful environment. Here, they get to socialize with other cats and people, making them more adoptable.”
One side of the space houses the coffee shop, with an espresso bar offering hot and cold coffees, iced tea, juices, lemonade, beer, seltzers, wine, pastries, charcuterie, sandwiches, and salads. It’s what’s on the other side of a 10-foot-wide window that makes this place extra special—the “cat room.”

With cat trees, scratchers, beds, toys, and couches for snuggling, 10 to 20 cats enjoy life to the fullest as they await adoption through partner shelters the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast and the Humane Society of St. Lucie County. Guests (ages 5 and up) can make reservations for 30- to 60-minute sessions to play with the kitties. In their first five months of business, Zaravelis projects they will have found homes for more than 100 cats.
Thinking back to the cat that started it all, Zaravelis says: “I tell Frankie that he changed the whole trajectory of my life. I truly feel that this is my calling.” thekittycup.com; hstc1.org; hsslc.org ❖

Old Florida VIBES
STUART VINTAGE OFFERS
ONE-OF-A-KIND HOME DECOR WITH OLD-SCHOOL FLORIDA FLAVOR
BY VALERIE STAGGS
Aburst of color greets visitors who have the good fortune to find their way into Stuart Vintage, a new boutique specializing in vintage home decor. The shop is the brainchild of Alison Manship, who worked at Matilda’s for 14 years before deciding to open her own boutique earlier this year.
Manship grew up in a historic home in Stamford, Connecticut surrounded by antique furnishings. “People’s houses told a story,” she says of the neighborhood where she spent her childhood. In 2005, she moved to Boca Raton with her then-boyfriend, and the couple eventually moved north, settled in Stuart, and got married. In 2010, Manship began working with Dana Small at Matilda’s in downtown Stuart. “I went into every boutique until I found Matilda’s,” she recalls. “Dana and I bonded over all the same things.”

says. “I thought, one day I’ll open my own store.”

She loved working at Matilda’s, but she also had big plans for the future percolating in the back of her mind. “I was piling things up in my garage, and I started getting good at refurbishing,” she

That day finally came last February when she signed a lease for her new space on NE Dixie Highway (just north of the Roosevelt Bridge). “I wanted to be a destination store, but close to downtown,” she says. She worked hard to renovate the space, sometimes sleeping on an air mattress in the back of the shop. In two months, she was open for business.
As she welcomes her first season, Manship is excited about introducing her style to locals and visitors alike—she describes the vibe as “bougie vintage.” She drives all over the state to hand-select pieces for the shop, many of which she refurbishes before selling. “I’ve always had a really good eye, and I can picture where something goes,” she says of the ever-changing collection of one-of-a-kind vintage furniture, lighting, coffee table books, pillows, home accessories, and gift items. “What makes this store unique is that every time you come in, it is completely different. You can always expect to see something you didn’t see last time.”
While the pieces at Stuart Vintage may look pricey, Manship’s mission is to make vintage affordable. “I want Old Florida style to be attainable here,” she says. “I’m not Palm Beach.” stuartvintagefurniture.com ❖

European Splendor
Sophia Passerini layers clients’ interiors with bespoke designs inspired by her Italian heritage
BY KERRY SHORR
The passion Sophia Passerini has for artisanal Italian manufacturing profoundly shapes her Jupiter-based interior design firm and home furnishings showroom, Passerini Design.
Passerini was raised in Venice, Italy surrounded by ancient architecture and minimalistic design. When she moved to London, she embraced the British classic contemporary aesthetic and the artful practice of utilizing layers (think: hand-tied carpets, luxurious window treatments, and vibrant throw pillows) to instill warmth and unmitigated elegance into a space.

In 2018, Passerini moved to Jupiter and opened her showroom on Indiantown Road three years later. When taking on a new design project, she typically begins by cleaning up the home’s preexisting architecture, adding new elements like curved archways and statuesque columns, and tying the interiors together with a neutral and calming color palette.
Borrowing from her bel paese (Italian for “beautiful country”) heritage, she finds bliss in marble flooring shaped from centuries-old practices and walls slathered with Venetian plaster and accented with a stunning art installation or mirrors to reflect natural light. Contemporary Italian lighting, or “jewelry” as she describes it, is another essential Passerini uses as a focal point or “just to guide your eye wherever I want it to go,” she says.
Furnishings, all custom-made in Italy and designed with luxurious velvets, satins, jacquards, and linens, are added next. “Our catalog contains over 4,000 items that can be individually tailored to the client’s taste,” says Passerini, who attends Milan’s annual
furniture exhibition and prides herself on the close ties she has developed with the country’s finest craftsmen. “I know everything about every vendor I work with,” she says. Her Jupiter showroom is filled with a carefully curated assortment of fabrics, home accessories, art pieces, lighting, linens, and more.
Soon Passerini will expand her design empire to Palm Beach, where a new boutique is scheduled to open on North County Road at the end of the year. The intimate space will showcase silk lamps and apparel from Fortuny, collaborations with Armani Casa, and the designer’s own collection of custom bedding. passerini.design

A Symbiotic Relationship
AT NEWFIELD FARM, MARTIN COUNTY ETHNOBOTANIST ANDREW GERREN IS CULTIVATING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN LOCALS AND THE LAND
BY NILA DO SIMON
It comes as no surprise that Andrew Gerren’s Stuart home is filled with plants. In fact, it’s inundated, he says. This summer alone, he has harvested pineapple, soursop, jackfruit, chia, Moringa, and a heap of herbs, all from the small space at his home he has lovingly turned into a miniature grove.
Personal bounty aside, Gerren is making an impact beyond the confines of his home and into greater Martin

County. An expert in organic sustainable agriculture, he has found that base with Newfield Farm, a 170-acre sustainable community that is currently being developed in Palm City. In his role as lead farm educator and manager at Newfield, Gerren will work alongside the farm’s 3,400-acre residential community—developed by journalist-turned-businessman Knight Kiplinger—to manage the year-round food production and core operations, as well as oversee educational programming for residents. Big plans are in store for the farm, including hosting future residents (and the broader public) to cultivate their own vegetables and herbs while inviting them to select from vegetables, herbs, flowers, and more grown at the farm.
“This vision of making agriculture a vibrant and central part of this community really resonated with me,” Gerren says. And after understanding his journey, it’s easy to see why.
It could be said that the seeds of Gerren’s career were planted in his family’s backyard garden in Massachusetts. In a corner of their yard, the Gerren family planted a small but diverse garden that grew various fruits, including tomatoes. Even after the family moved to Florida, farm-based produce was a constant for the Gerrens, with weekend trips to U-pick farms to hand-select seasonal fruits and vegetables. As an adult, Gerren’s deep dive into the natural world began about 20 years ago, sparked by a focus on health and wanting to understand where the food he ate came from.
Newfield Farm
He committed to a vegan diet and developed an interest in wild edible plants and herbal medicine. In 2011, he founded Garden to Gardens Inc., a gardening and landscaping company that helped hundreds of people grow edible gardens, incorporate permaculture design, and build sustainable food systems.
Four years later, in an effort to extend his growing relationship with plants, Gerren enrolled at the University of Hawaii at Manoa to study the science of ethnobotany. Part pharmacology and part chemistry, ethnobiology is an interdisciplinary field that explores the relationship between plants and human cultures. As Gerren explains: “Ethnobotany is a dynamic, fluid science that blends traditional plant knowledge with modern science and how plants can be used in medicine, food, rituals, and ceremonies.”

His studies took him to the Philippines and the island of Vanuatu, where he saw how important the kava plant is to its residents. “In Vanuatu, there is a lot of reverence to plants that’s tied to religious and cultural beliefs,” Gerren says. “Often, if there’s a quarrel among villagers, they discuss it over kava. That’s an example of how critical a role plants play in some cultures. There’s a reason why they say Vanuatu is one of the happiest countries in the world.”
After graduating, Gerren spent two years in Jamaica
volunteering as an environmental and sustainable agriculture facilitator for the Peace Corps. He returned to South Florida in 2021, taking with him a deep appreciation for nature—and now he is applying his passion and knowledge at Newfield.
“Culture plant knowledge is important in Florida, and understanding historic practices of food and paying respect to the land that you are on is something I look forward to showing at Newfield,” he says. newfieldfarm.com ❖

An intimate but comfortable layout on the Everglades 455CC makes group excursions with family and friends a lot more fun for the West family
BY GEORGE LABONTE
Over the last several years, the boating industry has seen a rapid rise in the demand for larger, luxury center consoles that are big enough to accommodate a crowd and pack many of the same features typically found on a convertible twin-diesel sportfish yacht. That demand has been met with more than a handful of options that incorporate these features into an outboard-powered boat. Add the ability to run the boat single-handedly if necessary, and you’ll quickly see the appeal of a rig such as the Everglades 455CC.
The option of firing up your boat and running her with a shorthanded crew (or even solo) yet still having the real estate onboard, along with the amenities to host a large gathering with family and friends, held a powerful draw for the West family of Palm City. Patrick, Laura, and their daughter, Sophie, have enjoyed boating together with other family members and friends for years. Much of their experience involves planning extended voyages to the Bahamas, dating back to when Sophie made her first crossing to West End when she was just 11 years old.

More recently, their adventures have involved traveling farther abroad to the Out Islands of the Abacos and Exumas. For this family, a week spent cruising in the tropics with a crowd of good people is made more enjoyable in the more personal space offered by an open-cockpit center console. And for Patrick, a day fishing for deep-water grouper and snapper, or trolling for dolphin, is easier with a group when they can interact on a single-level deck that is more intimate than a flybridge or express boat. Ultimately, for the West family, the Everglades 455CC makes every day on the water infinitely more fun. ❖

Island Oasis
Designer Jackie Armour crafts a serene Jupiter Island retreat for empty nesters who want to keep their lives simple—and their eyes on the ocean
BY JEAN NAYAR
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARMEL BRANTLEY
Just before the pandemic, Chris and Linda Baldwin decided it was time for a new adventure and started looking for a winter family home in a sunny clime with a slower pace of life. They found the perfect setting in a waterfront lot on Jupiter Island with spectacular ocean views. The only problem: the lot included a dated existing house that lacked the qualities they needed for this new phase of their lives.
Still, the location was unbeatable, so they took the plunge and purchased the property. They would tear down the old house and build their dream home from scratch.

“My husband and I fell in love with the area and wanted to design our home to take full advantage of the beautiful views of the Atlantic,” says Linda. The Baldwins enlisted local architect Mitch Miller of Village Architects in Tequesta to design an expansive five-bedroom house where they could relax, host guests, and entertain in a way that makes the most of the natural beauty outdoors.
Linda says they wanted the home to be “elegant yet livable,”
and Miller set about crafting an 8,000-square-foot home that supports easy living, indoors and out.
With a focus on simplicity and an emphasis on maximizing views, Miller drew up a streamlined, tripartite, two-story stucco structure with classic features along the front facade including gabled standing seam roofs, painted timber-style brackets supporting shallow eaves, and a pair of dormers above the garage. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and picture windows take advantage of the extraordinary ocean views and provide seamless access to the outdoors, with a variety of comfy covered seating areas by the pool.

To finish the spaces with architectural details and furnishings that would add dimension and warmth to the expansive rooms, the Baldwins brought Jupiterbased designer Jackie Armour of JMA Interior Design into the mix. “We hit it off with the client from the first phone call,” recalls Armour. “Our visions were very much aligned.”
“Aesthetically, we wanted a calm and comfortable interior that was relaxing from the moment you came through the front doors,” says Linda. “Part of that was just letting the views greet you immediately.” The couple also wanted the interiors to feel relaxed and livable.
“My husband and I love to entertain, and we enjoy cooking,” Linda adds. With that in mind, an inviting

and functional kitchen, multiple seating areas, and public and private rooms with access to the outdoors were also priorities.
While the Baldwins wanted easy-care spaces in neutral colors that would allow the stunning views to take center stage, Armour readily convinced them that the very large interior rooms could benefit from some character-building architectural elements and splashes of color. “They wanted a very calming space that wouldn’t compete with the views‚ and with a dog and lots of guests coming and going, they didn’t want anything to be too precious,” says Armour. Yet in every room, the designer could easily see opportunities to create moments of visual interest with materials and color in keeping with the context, starting at the double-height entrance foyer.
To complement the sunny setting, Armour opted for a light, limed cypress wood for the dramatic double entrance doors
and repeated the material on the muntins and moldings of the windows. She also incorporated wide-plank French oak flooring, which continues onto the staircase treads and risers and extends into the inviting great room with its floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open to the pool and endless ocean beyond. Outside, she injected beach-inspired spirit by covering the ceiling with white-painted, nipple-joint poplar paneling. Since the couple enjoy cooking, they wanted a big front-facing kitchen that would open to the family room with a separate serving, prep, and storage area out of view. “I like an uncluttered look, so having a prep area slightly hidden is perfect for me,” says Linda. In the kitchen area, Armour saw an opportunity to add punches of color and character by painting the paneling of the island a pale blue and introducing a millwork focal point on the ceiling that

frames over-scale pendants above the island. She also extended the quartzite counter material to the backsplash and around the windows overlooking the side yard. “By painting the swath of built-in cabinets and millwork along the wall of the adjacent dining room a bold blue, we also added a wow factor here with color that’s almost identical to the ocean beyond,” says Armour.
To further complement the calm neutral base, Armour worked with the couple to introduce finishing touches with understated patterns and textures, along with a few more shots of color throughout the home. A waxy, reflective Venetian plaster finish, for example, adds subtle sheen to an inset in the foyer. A massive chandelier in the dining room composed of handblown glass balls echoes the bubbles in the waves of the ocean. And ultra-suede upholstery on a sectional and performance linen on chairs bring layers of soft texture to the great room.

collection in the great room inject more lively pops of color, as does a bold floral wallpaper in the mudroom. Similar touches bring dimension to the soothing private spaces on the upper level, including the painted paneling along a second-story bridge that links one side of the house to the other and marble tiles laid in a chevron pattern on the wall behind a freestanding tub in the master bath.
A mix of cozy seating areas indoors and out—loungers in and around the pool, a sofa, a cocktail table and chairs near the summer kitchen, and a settee swing on the
covered lanai outside the main-level master suite— merge form and function in just the right measure.
“When we are alone, we love to sit in our family room, where the swivel chairs just off the kitchen allow for great one-on-one conversation,” says Linda, adding that the thoughtful mix of furnishings offers a plethora of options for larger group gatherings too.
Says Linda: “The integration of the indoor and outdoor spaces has exceeded our expectations. From morning coffee in our family room or on the covered lanai, to entertaining with the sliding doors open, to the pool and ocean views, this home has met all of our needs and more.”
Since settling in earlier this year, the Baldwins and their extended families agree that their new dwelling marks the perfect start to a new chapter. ❖

The Ritz-Carlton Residences
Living LUXE
Kirsten Norman brings her stunning design aesthetic to the new Ritz-Carlton Residences in Palm Beach Gardens
BY VALERIE STAGGS
At the bottom of Kirsten Norman’s bio on The Norman Design Group website is a quote from Oscar Wilde: I have the simplest of taste. I am always satisfied with the best! The truth is that while Norman has built a reputation for delivering the very best in designer living, her tastes are anything but simple. With luxury projects ranging from a Baja-chic home in Cabo’s Rancho San Lucas to a rustic Colorado ranch retreat, her portfolio showcases an eclectic design sense born from a life lived around the world.
Born in the Philippines, Norman, who is known to her friends as Kiki, was a world traveler even as a child. “My dad was German, and my mom is Filipino, and I grew up speaking German and English,” says Norman, who has lived in Thailand, Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, as well as the United States and Philippines. “My appreciation for different cultures as a result of all the places I’ve lived and traveled to has really shaped my design aesthetic.”
Yet design wasn’t always the path she thought she would pursue. Her mother, a high-powered businesswoman, encouraged Norman to follow

in her corporate footsteps. So, after high school, she went off to Boston College, graduating in 1990 with bachelor’s degrees in both marketing and human resource management.
She moved to Hong Kong after graduation, but instead of pursuing a corporate job, she began modeling, enjoying the opportunity the

work gave her to travel the world. It was her friends who first recognized her talent for design. “I liked reorganizing and redecorating my friends’ homes,” recalls Norman. “Eventually, my friends said, ‘You really need to start doing this for real.’”
She went back to school to study design at Parsons in New York City and spent the next 14 years designing hotels from California to Switzerland for prestigious companies including international hospitality design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates.
In 2014, she founded The Norman Design Group, where she spearheads the luxurious designs of the branded real estate projects of her husband, pro golfer Greg Norman, and select residential projects. After retiring from his illustrious sports career, Greg—known to the golf world as the Great White Shark—built an international empire, his iconic shark logo on everything from award-winning golf courses, to wine, to apparel, to a global collection of real estate.
She also oversaw the total renovation of the couple’s former home on Jupiter Island, which they tore down in 2018 and rebuilt from the ground up. “We decided we would live on Jupiter Island permanently instead of moving to Australia or the Bahamas, and we wanted to make this our dream home for future retirement,” says Norman. The 32,000-square-foot, 8-acre estate was completed in 2020—just as the pandemic hit. That’s when the Normans decided that having a massive estate was not what they wanted after all, she says. They sold the home in 2021 and moved to Old Palm Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, which Norman also renovated.

Now the Normans have once again concluded that a change of address might be in order. Last year, they purchased and combined two condos at the luxury Ritz-Carlton Residences in Palm Beach Gardens, a project currently being developed by Catalfumo Companies on the old Panama Hattie’s site. Norman has been hard at work bringing her design aesthetic (which she describes as “warm and a little bit masculine”) into the 8,500-square-foot space. The project, she says, is one of a kind: “We were looking for a condo, and the product at the Ritz-Carlton was like nothing we had seen. It has beautiful aesthetics and a yacht-inspired quality about it, similar to our Jupiter Island home, which immediately appealed to us.”
To that end, Norman says the overall design of her and Greg’s new

home will be yacht-inspired. “The casual dining area is customdesigned and built by the Newport Yacht Collaborative, with the tables extending as they do on a yacht,” she says of her design plan. “I’m very excited to see the finished product.” Her vision combines rich custom oak shelving with bronze detailing and furniture with yacht-inspired elements such as Liaigre’s curved Silencio coffee tables, Colonie feature table, Boréal bench, Aspre sofa, and Caravelle lighting fixtures. Natural textures with a warm, neutral-toned palette create a relaxing aura.
Norman is excited to be working with a number of design partners on the space, including Ralph Lauren, Studio Liaigre, Apparatus Studio, and Italian furniture designer Molteni&C. For example, in the kitchen area—which includes a master show kitchen, wine room, bar, and catering kitchen—she collaborated with Molteni&C. “I chose these designers because of their natural finishes and luxurious simplicity,” says Norman. “The furniture is very high-end and high-quality, but it’s not intimidating. You can still put your feet on it.”
The Ritz-Carlton Residences property in Palm Beach Gardens, from top: an incredible view from a private balcony overlooking the Intracoastal; the relaxing pool area; private bath.
The Normans’ new home also includes a spacious master suite wing with an office, a gym, and private elevator access—plus unparalleled 180-degree views of the Intracoastal Waterway from the expansive outdoor terrace. The Ritz-Carlton Residences boasts some pretty incredible amenities, with the property’s private marina being a big selling point for the Normans. “Dan [Catalfumo] had this brilliant idea to add boat slips, which is like gold in this area,” says Norman. The couple plans to dock their two boats at the marina. Their new home is slated for completion in early 2026, though the couple isn’t sure when they will fully move in. Trying out the condo life is something new for Greg, who Norman says has never lived in a condo before. It will serve as a “home base,” she says, and give them the flexibility to do things like spend more time in the Bahamas, where they are members of Baker’s Bay. “I’m excited about what the Ritz offers, but I’m even more excited about having no more home maintenance,” says Norman.
For now, she has her work cut out for her. On top of designing her own home at the Ritz-Carlton, she will be lending her talents to additional units at the residences. The developer was so impressed with her work, they hired her to design combined units for other potential buyers interested in larger options. Having recently completed a modern chalet-style house in Aspen, she is also busy with a condo installation in New York City’s Greenwich Village, home renovations in Wellington and at Old Palm Golf Club, and putting final touches on a new home on Jupiter Island.
Next up? Says Norman: “I will be completing the design of our future house in Baker’s Bay and, of course, working on the Ritz. And I hope to spend more time traveling with Greg next year.” gregnormanrealestate.com/ norman-design-group ❖

THE RITZ-CARLTON RESIDENCES
When finished, The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Palm Beach Gardens will include 106 luxury condos in three seven-story residential buildings on 14 acres of land. In addition to a 29-slip marina accommodating vessels up to 75 feet, on-site amenities include: a 100-foot infinity heated pool; poolside cabanas; a private waterfront clubhouse
with an event kitchen, coffee bar, and game room; a state-of-the-art fitness center with private spa treatment rooms; an outdoor yoga lawn; a meditation garden; a dedicated, 24-hour concierge; and more. Cottage-chic

Dream Weaver
Ally Whalen creates an ephemeral setting on Hutchinson Island for a lovely couple to retire in coastal-cool style
BY KERRY SHORR
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACI PEÑA/THE J PROJECTS

Sharon and Michael Stathis had visions of retiring near the beach. The couple had spent decades in South Florida, where Michael owned a construction company, and now it was time to settle into their golden years. After spending his life building custom dream homes for clients, the time had come for Michael to build a dream home of his own.
It was during a weekend getaway in Faber Cove in August 2020 that the Stathises found their forever home. “We were out riding our bikes when we saw this empty lot for sale with magnificent views of the water and space for a boat dock,” Michael says of the paradisical refuge on Hutchinson Island with deep anchorage points and calm, crystalline waters. “I remember thinking, ‘Whoa, I have got to look at this.’” An avid surfer, Michael already knew all about the excellent amenities in the area—boating, fishing, water sports—from family vacations spent in Fort Pierce.
The couple, who had been living at the same address in Pompano Beach since tying the knot when they were in their twenties, wanted to relocate to a quieter spot with more spacious digs—and this was it.

They quickly scooped up the half-acre, palm-bordered estate and tapped architect Anthony Cosentino of Cosentino Architecture to draft a 3,500-square-foot, Key West–style home with wide open living spaces ideal for entertaining. They also planned for three bedrooms with en suite baths, a convertible office, and a connecting three-car garage. Says Sharon: “It was finally our turn to build a house with everything we wanted.”
At the southern end of the property, the architect configured a covered patio with rollup fabric storm screens that protect an active space with table tennis, a dining setting for alfresco meals and playing board games, and separate seating areas with an outdoor television and wood-burning fireplace overlooking the cove’s turquoise waters.
With Michael serving as general contractor, Sharon went hunting for an interior designer. “My job was finding three people to interview, which was difficult living in Pompano Beach

and not knowing who they were,” she says. “Ally [of Ally Whalen Design] was the first person we visited, and then I canceled the other interviews.”
From their first meeting with Ally Whalen, the couple was sold. They loved the Stuart-based designer’s modern coastal sensibility (not to mention the scrumptious bites she served them on their initial visit). Michael and Sharon enlisted Whalen to mastermind a “cottage-chic retreat” mixed with an “upscale boutique beach hotel,” kind of like the aesthetic of Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica, California, whose barefoot elegance they adored. They only had a couple of specific requests: furniture needed to be made of washable

performance fabrics because they have a high-shedding golden retriever, Jax; Sharon wanted a cozy nook in the primary bedroom for reading; and absolutely no fish paraphernalia. “I didn’t want a marlin hanging on my wall,” Sharon says with a laugh.
Connecting the couple’s passion for boating and other water activities with their fondness for throwing lively social gatherings, Whalen set out to create a serene and welcoming setting that embraced her clients’ dynamic outdoor lifestyle and passion for entertaining. Past the whitewashed oakpaneled front door, guests experience their first “wow” of many as they enter the sun-dappled foyer. A 16-foot vaulted ceiling crafted from unfinished cypress and then paintwashed lends dramatic architectural dimension and soars above a massive open floor plan. Bringing a welcoming sense of warmth to the walkway, Trucor floors create a pathway to a trio of 9-foot-tall glass sliders on the home’s southern periphery that open to the pool and manicured backyard and forge an easy transition from indoor to outdoor living.
In the great room, where the homeowners can share meals and watch television, Whalen played with a cool, coastal palette of bright whites with touches of light gray, green, and blue, which she also pulled throughout the house for continuity. Beneath a seismic ceiling fan, a textured sisal rug from Homesense in Port St. Lucie anchors contemporarybut-comfortable pieces from the designer’s Simplicity by Ally Whalen furniture line that includes a set of cozy swivel gliders and a sink-in sofa upholstered in soft beige fabric. One of the project’s big construction challenges, which Michael handled with success, was the fireplace wall, which needed to be built out more than a foot to accommodate rows of built-ins that display family photos, books, shells, and fresh floral arrangements.
Opposite the great room, a wood-and-glass hutch holds the requisite ingredients for après-dinner libations, while a linear, raffia-wrapped Currey and Co. chandelier holds court above a weathered dining room table surrounded by woven Scandinavian-inspired seating. For the host and hostess chairs, Whalen chose a subtle geometric textile with “a bit
A stunning 16-foot vaulted ceiling made from unfinished cypress soars above a massive open floor plan.

of pop.” She explains: “I don’t mix too many patterns because I only like there to be one star in the room.”
As in many homes, the kitchen is the honey that draws family and guests. “I love sharing my kitchen and cooking with friends whenever they come over,” says Sharon. Stacked wall cabinetry, a walk-in pantry, and a 5-by-10-foot double-sided island topped with a quartz countertop maximize storage and functionality, while a gray and white Bedrosians Cloe ceramic tile backsplash lends a whiff of coastal mystique. Sliding glass doors leading to the outdoor dining area make the transfer of food quick and seamless.
Cosentino spaced the master bedroom and bath away from the guest rooms to give the couple a private, intimate nest to recharge. The primary bedroom exudes a luxurious cocooning effect with pale hues, cozy bedding, textured carpeting, and light-filtering linenblend curtains. A third set of sliding doors opens to the pool area, making a case for an impromptu swim. Sharon’s request for a cozy reading nook came to life with a chaise lounge from Simplicity by Ally Whalen placed in a corner, where she can watch the sun sparkling on the water.
In the master bath, Whalen installed timeless pieces like double white oak vanities capped
with quartz (the same quartz used on the kitchen countertops), glazed porcelain floor tiles, polished nickel fixtures, and wall sconces with linen shades to help create an oasis of calm. A walk-in glass shower with pebble stone flooring and a modern, egg-shaped soaking tub bring new reasons to freshen up. Above the tub, a top-down shade provides privacy while allowing light in at the top. Whalen opted for black hardware and door hinges, despite the couple’s initial hesitation. “At first, we weren’t sure about it, but now we love it,” Sharon says of the decision.
This past June, the home was finally complete. When it was time to unveil the new space to the homeowners, Whalen wanted to treat her clients to a dramatic unveiling rivaling any home makeover show, complete with candles, music, bottles of wine, and a charcuterie board.
“When we opened the door, we were completely overwhelmed, says Michael. Sharon admits she was moved to tears, adding: “To have the opportunity to build your own home, have it designed by someone like Ally, and then walk in and just… I couldn’t dream that big.” ❖

Memorable Career Moment: Dedicating my first collection to my grandmother Neri Bruguera, who has been both my mentor and teacher. Having her presence at my debut fashion show meant the world to me, as it allowed me to honor her legacy and extend her influence as a woman and a designer.
Greatest Inspiration: I find inspiration in many things, such as music, art, flowers, colors, smell, food, animals, nature, places, and cultures. However, my greatest inspiration comes from my daughters. Everything I do is a reflection of the love I have for them. Motherhood has brought out the best in me, and I feel incredibly blessed to have twin girls who inspire me to be a better person every day.
Signature Piece from My Collection: The bows. I’ve always had a deep affection for them because they embody both femininity and innocence. When a woman wears a bow, she radiates elegance with a delicate yet distinctly feminine charm.

Go-to Outfit: It depends on the occasion and my mood that day. Ultimately, it’s about finding the perfectly fitted piece that accentuates my silhouette, whether it’s a dress, skirt, blouse, or pair of pants suitable for anything from a casual day out to an evening event. I believe women want to look and feel confident in their clothing, and a garment that fits just right is crucial for that. When I design, I focus not only on style but also on cut and fit, ensuring each piece enhances a woman’s confidence and beauty.
Beauty Must-Haves: A homemade rice water mist for a refreshing and hydrating boost and natural aloe vera as a moisturizer. Both have natural healing properties, making them vital for keeping skin healthy and nourished. I also can’t go without my lipstick. I love bold shades of colors, red being one of my favorites.

Personal Style: Barefoot elegance. I love the romance of effortless style with a hint of sophistication. It’s about getting dressed up but kicking your shoes off to feel the sand between your toes.
Home Decor Mantra: Design for the way you live and style with the things you love.
Favorite Designer: That’s hard to say, but one brand I sell in my shop that has stood the test of time is Oliphant. It has style, a pop of color or pattern, and you can literally wear their dresses to lunch, to the beach, or to Paris!
Go-to Outfit: The Anywhere Dress by Matilda’s, Carrie Forbes sandals, a Frank & Eileen blazer over the shoulders, a Sunshine Tienda hat—and a structured tote to carry my laptop, design notebooks, and endless fabric samples.
Memorable Career Moments: Recreating my own spin on a classic maxi dress and selling it in my shop, and landing the cover of Coastal Living—not once but twice!
Coveted Items for Fall: For fashion, any piece by Frank & Eileen. At home, I like using darker floral greens, pops of orange flowers, and rich tan and chocolate decor bits during the fall.

Business Advice:
My late uncle, who was a SCORE mentor, told me: “Whatever you do, don’t open a shop for your friends and family. They will want or expect a discount. You can’t make money if all you do is discount to everyone you know. Open the shop for all the people you don’t know.”
Style Hack: Adding texture—to your outfit and your home. A belt or a hat can definitely add a level of layering to any look, and I love throwing a blazer over my shoulders. It looks effortlessly chic. Just like layering an outfit, I love to layer textures and patterns of fabrics, wallpapers, furnishings, and decor in the home. Without the texture element, things can go flat. One of the main reasons clients hire me is for my usage of color and texture.
Beauty Must-Haves: I’m a minimalist when it comes to beauty products. I use Skin Trip, the most basic all-over body skin moisturizer made with coconut. My favorite powder blush is Chanel 71 Malice.

Local Gem: Honestly, my own home. It’s on the water [in Stuart], with a beach and a dock. I love to read down by the beach under the shade of the palm trees or simply watch the boats go by.

GOURMET Grab & Go

MANGO MERCADO OFFERS A PLACE TO GRAB A TASTE OF CHEF PUSHKAR MARATHE’S MAGIC AND BRING IT HOME
BY PAIGE FEIGENBAUM
Chef Pushkar Marathe is known for the incredibly flavorful global cuisine he serves at Stage and Ela Curry & Cocktails. And now he has opened a gourmet market where foodies can pick up a prepared meal to-go and shop for some of the unique ingredients he uses in his dishes.
After moving Ela Curry & Cocktails to a larger storefront a few doors down in The Shops of Donald Ross Village in Palm Beach Gardens, Marathe and his business

partner, Andrew Dugard, decided to transform the original space into a specialty market—Mango Mercado.
“We felt that people needed a boutique-like place that had character,” Marathe says of the new store, which opened in May. “At Mango Mercado, we have a wine market, a grab-and-go area, and prepared foods. We also have a shelf of ingredients that we use in our recipes.”
Growing up in India, Marathe always loved mangoes, and after moving to Florida, he discovered the different varieties grown here. The inspiration behind Mango Mercado, the fruit is used in many of the items sold at the market, including yogurts, jams, salads, lemonade, iced tea, and cheesecake.
One of the market’s staples is the homemade rotisserie chicken, which can

be purchased as a half or whole bird. It’s the same chicken that is used in their pulled-chicken sandwich with avocado, cucumbers, and homemade Greek oregano dressing, as well as their curry chicken salad, The Coronation (named

so as the dish is typically served during British royal coronations).
An expansive salad station includes 60 different ingredients and a half dozen homemade dressings. Made-to-order and prepared breakfast and lunch sandwiches include ham, cheese, and bacon on a hoagie, turkey club, beef carpaccio, tuna salad, and piadinas (Italian flatbreads).
For kids (and kids at heart), there is the Toyam & Rosie’s Kids Special. Named for Marathe’s 10-year-old son and Dugard’s 13-year-old daughter, the meal includes chicken tenders with a side of fries. Decadent desserts range from tasty cookies to Key lime pie in a jar. They carry more than 50 varieties of wine by the bottle, and eat-in diners can also purchase a few by the glass.
For the fall/winter season, Marathe and Dugard have added a bunch of squash and pumpkin dishes to the menu, including butternut squash curry soup, pumpkin bread, pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin spice cookies, and pumpkin bread pudding. mangomercado.com ❖

UNASSUMING EXCELLENCE
JUPITER’S “FIVE-STAR DIVE BAR,” HAP & HOOCH IS QUICKLY BECOMING A PLACE WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME
BY PAIGE FEIGENBAUM
Nostalgia is front and center when you enter Hap & Hooch, a new bar and restaurant that opened in April in Jupiter (in the old Surf Taco location). A gallery wall features family photos of owners Cassidy Flannery and Dan Newkirk—including photos of the restaurant’s namesake, “Hap,” otherwise known as Flannery’s grandfather Leroy. Regular customers have also brought in their own framed photos to add to the collection, making the space feel incredibly warm and familial.

“We’re hopeful that over the course of time, our walls will be full of all the people who have made Hap & Hooch what it is,” says Flannery. “We’re a five-star dive bar. We’ve made it very homey and clean, nothing pretentious.”
At Hap & Hooch, the menu feels familiar, but presentation adds a pop of surprise. The house margarita, for instance, is served in a frosted root beer mug with crushed ice and sea salt foam, which is made to look like a bubble bath (using an aquarium agitator). Flannery and Newkirk personally tend the bar at Hap & Hooch and are constantly coming up with unique creations. There are local beers available too, from Civil Society and Tequesta Brewing Company.

On Thursday nights, guests can doubledown on the nostalgia factor with an Adult Happy Meal—Wagyu Smash Burger, crinklecut fries, and an old-fashioned for $22. The intentionally small menu rotates, but a few standout favorites (like the fried chicken sandwich, chicken wings, and nachos) are always on hand. hapandhooch.com ❖
BIG WINNER

Six local mom-and-pop restaurants put their must-have dishes to the test for Best Bite in Town, Guy Fieri’s popular new Food Network show. The episode, which aired in May, saw Stella Koufalis, chef/owner of Port St. Lucie’s Think Greek, take home the top prize—a trophy, $5,000, and another $5,000 for her charity of choice, Big Brothers Big Sisters. The dish that won the judges over was Koufalis’ gyropitakia, a Greek wonton with crumbled beef and lamb gyro meat, goat cheese, cream cheese, chives, and dill stuffed inside an egg roll wrapper and fried, with homemade tzatziki sauce for dipping (“a ballroom with flavors dancing inside,” described one judge). Think Greek began as a food truck in 2014 before opening as a dine-in restaurant on Port St. Lucie Boulevard in 2018. Says manager Rosanne Leo: “Our gyropitakia has always been a top seller, but after the show, we’ve been making it around the clock!” thinkgreekfl.com Paige Feigenbaum
