Growth and Development rom time to time, I’m reminded of a statement by Andy Warhol that I mentioned in this space several years ago. “They always say that time changes things,” he said, “but you actually have to change them yourself.” In other words, the future is determined less by the calendar and more by effort.

Home Front ith all the time we spend on the road, jetting about for business and pleasure, and on the go, sometimes the greatest luxury is being at home. During these times, comfort and harmony amid intimate surroundings can be all the escape one needs—especially if those surroundings are created by a fabulous host or hostess.

In this issue dedicated to the pleasures of home, we pay homage to the Palm Beach style of entertaining and design. We challenged our entertaining expert, Victoria Amory, to assemble original, highly personalized tables for intimate parties at home, and she delivered a fresh take on the classics. In “The Art of the Table” (page 46), Victoria has utilized juicy colors and unusual touches to fashion tablescapes for every occasion from brunch poolside to an alfresco lunch on—ready for it?—the driveway. I love her creative combinations and I think you will, too.

Entertaining at home is something philanthropist Patrick Park excels at. At a recent dinner party honoring friends Llwyd and Diana Ecclestone, Patrick pulled out all the stops to create a pleasing environment for his guests. The evening, of course, was centered on music (he’s a Juilliard-trained pianist) and amazing food (he’s a bon viveur), but it really was all about the people. We chronicle the affair in “Mr. Park’s Opus,” on page 62.

On the design front, we examine the latest trends for stylish interiors and outdoor living in “Design of the Times.” In Palm Beach, home decor trends always are reinterpreted with the climate in mind. We spoke to local designers about their strategies for incorporating these trends into the Palm Beach home, and rounded up dozens of products in graphic prints, citrus colors, botanicals, Indianinspired forms, and outdoor-appropriate materials that are perfect for the island lifestyle. Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

“My sister says I need a holistic doctor because I have a whole list of problems!”

Teresa wasn’t kidding. The old records she brought (organized in a dozen individual manila folders) were almost an inch thick. I opened up, “Perhaps we should just start with one thing. Tell me about this thyroid condition of yours.”

“I haven’t felt right since starting Synthroid four years ago. It’s like I’ve been drinking caffeine all day. I’m wound up, but really, I’m over-tired, so I’m not able to concentrate.

“The worst part is that my doctors haven’t been listening to anything I have to say. I read on About.com’s thyroid web site about Armour Thyroid, but they won’t prescribe it. One Endo even said that his medical school didn’t teach about T3 and he didn’t know how to test for it, much less prescribe any medication that had T3 in it!”

“I sense your frustration. Doctors need to keep on learning after they graduate from medical school. I take at least 4 weeks of conference a year so I never have to say to a patient, ‘I still don’t know the answer to your question.’

“So what other symptoms do you have?”

“What don’t I have do you mean? Muscle cramps, tinnitus in my left ear, canker sores. Dry skin, swelling of my ankles, hair loss.

Joint pains, especially in my wrists. Even though hypothyroid patients are supposed to be constipated, I have diarrhea, especially when I eat bread. And even though I am frustrated with my doctors, I’m not depressed! If I had a dollar for every time I was given prescriptions for Ativan or Lexapro …”

“Don’t worry. Even though I’m an M.D. and could write for those drugs, when I find the cause of my patients’ conditions, I don’t need to cover up their symptoms. We’ll get to the bottom of what’s going on with you. By the way, thyroid and celiac disease are often seen together. Did anyone test you for gluten allergies?”

“No. What’s gluten?”

“Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and oats. Allergies to it can cause diarrhea and many of the other symptoms you’re having, especially the canker sores. I have a trick of using liquid folic acid to heal those ulcers inside your mouth, so you can get some relief while we wait for some tests to come back.”

Two weeks later, Teresa returned to go over her labs. “We’re going to audiotape this visit (or use the dictaphone app on your iPhone) because we have a lot to go over. I’ve found a half-dozen other things to talk about including the thyroid and celiac disease we mentioned last time.”

“That figures. Within a day of seeing you and starting that folic acid mouthwash, my canker sore went away. And since I stopped eating wheat, I haven’t had any diarrhea either. So what else did you find?”

“You have two types of thyroid conditions. One is HASHIMOTO’S THYROIDITIS, an autoimmune thyroid condition caused by your body attacking itself. The other is called the REVERSE T3 SYNDROME, where your body doesn’t properly convert T4 thyroid hormone into the more active T3 thyroid hormone. Since Synthroid is a T4 only drug, it is absolutely the worst medication for you to be on. You were right all along; you would do better on Armour Thyroid, or any other thyroid medication that has T3 in it.

“What’s more important, Teresa, is that both of these condi-

tions cause the Syndrome of Peripheral Thyroid Hormone Resistance, in which thyroid blood tests become less accurate. Instead of solely relying upon the TSH test you’ve had in the past, I’m going to include information from your history and physical exams to titrate your thyroid dosage.”

Identifying Teresa’s celiac disease proved to be a lynch pin to alleviating most of her symptoms. At her 6 month visit, Teresa’s list was whittled down to just a few minor concerns.

“Now if I could only get my sister in to see you … She’s a mess!”

One was for church, and the other was for school, which were corduroy and why I will never in my life wear corduroy. I couldn’t stand the noise they made, but that’s all we could afford.

■ WHAT ADVICE DID FRANK SINATRA GIVE YOU? The advice he gave me was about music, singing and attitude. He used to always stress to me about emotional memory. When you sing a sad song, you’ve got to think about something in your life that was sad and relive the moment as you’re singing the song. That’s how you get to be believable.

We head to France to savor the world’s greatest endurance race—and the customary desserts.

The Grand Marnier crêpes alone are worth the trip. Soft, fluffy, doughy pockets drizzled with the amber nectar liqueur. Who doesn’t adore food that can give you a buzz?

Yes, you can savor this oh-so-French creation on the sidewalks of the ChampsElysées. But if you have even a hint of hightest running through your veins, there’s no finer place on the planet to enjoy this sugary sensation than at the 24 Heures du Mans.

Le Mans. The world’s greatest road race. On the world’s greatest racetrack.

More than 50 of the world’s fastest cars spearing through the French countryside at speeds up to 200 mph for 24 long hours. And rows of trackside stands selling les crêpes Grand Marnier.

This is a truly magical place. For 363 days a year, much of the track reverts to being sleepy local roads. But on the second weekend in June, barriers are erected, roads are closed and it all becomes transformed into the Circuit de la Sarthe—a snaking, 8.5-mile tree-lined roller coaster. And the crowds are huge. This year, close to 300,000 passionate fans from around the globe would make the pilgrimage to witness this unique spectacle of man and machine against the clock.

I prime myself for the weekend by watching, maybe for the thirty-second time, the 1971 Steve McQueen movie Le Mans on the flight over to Paris. There’s not much of a story, but it captures perfectly

the sheer speed and overpowering danger of racing here.

Back in the early 1970s, the hard-fought battle of Le Mans was between Porsche and Ferrari. This year it would be between Audi and the French auto giant Peugeot, both fielding massively powerful dieselengined monsters.

I’m here to cheer on Audi. While the Germans have won the race eight of the past nine years, for 2009 they had a new and largely unproven car, the R15. Peugeot, on the other hand, had a car they’d been evolving for the past three seasons. It was blisteringly quick, reliable and the favorite to win.

To get a little taste of the awesome benefits of diesel power, I drive the two and a

half hours from Paris to Le Mans in Audi’s brand new 2010 Q7 3.0 TDI, its first ultraclean diesel for the U.S. market.

It’s a remarkable beast. Powered by a turbocharged 3-liter V6 that has the kind of muscle that can uproot tree stumps, it delivers 30-percent better fuel economy than similar-sized gasoline engines. Powering the full-size $52,000 Q7 SUV, the diesel offers 25 mpg in highway driving and a range of more than 600 miles between fill-ups, all while luxuriating you in leather-lined comfort.

And at a steady 90 mph on the autoroute to Le Mans, this thing is quieter than

Marcel Marceau during nap time. Need to pass that lumbering camion? One squeeze of the Q7’s throttle slingshots you past like you’ve been released from some invisible catapult.

We arrive in time for that great Le Mans tradition—the Friday night driver’s parade. Perched in the backseats of vintage cars, les pilotes wave enthusiastically at the crowds as the procession winds through town.

And yes, the good-looking guy with the curly locks and stubbly chin is none other than “McDreamy” himself, Patrick

Dempsey from Grey’s Anatomy. An accomplished racer, he’d go on to finish an impressive ninth in class behind the wheel of his red Ferrari F430—and raise a chunk of change for the Seattle Children’s Hospital.

The race itself is addictive, exhilarating and exhausting. From the moment the big Rolex clock at the side of the track strikes 3 p.m. and 55 howling projectiles scream past, to 3 p.m. on Sunday when the checkered flag comes out, it’s nonstop action.

This is a true endurance race, for both teams and spectators. The big decision: to go to bed soon after midnight, or earn your Le Mans stripes and stay up through the night. I compromise, hanging on till 4 a.m., watching the searing bright-white streaks of headlights as the cars hammer down the three-mile long Mulsanne Straight at close to 200 mph.

As predicted, the Peugeots stole the crown from Audi, taking first and second, giving Audi third place and a slot on the podium. Both teams will be back next year ready for battle. I’ll be there, too, clutching my Grand Marnier crêpe. ◆

Breakfast by the pool truly is the most relaxing way to start the day. It takes just a few minutes to set the scene. By the time coffee is brewed and eggs softly boiled, the table is set in various tones of beige and off-white. Serene, tranquil and incredibly comfortable, it is a small gesture that brings enormous pleasure. Succulents in small terra-cotta pots finish the look, bringing Mother Nature to the table.

Celadon and coral have become one of my favorite color combinations. The reflection of the coral is so flattering to the face that I think we should all live surrounded by coral walls. Anything goes in adding accents to the coral table. Mother Nature and the coral reefs become the inspiration. Think of the thousands of exotic fishes and you get the meaning. Stick to one or two colors, though, for a stronger statement.

ovelist Samuel Butler said, “Life is like music; it must be composed by ear, feeling and instinct, not by rule.” Patrick Park seems to embrace this philosophy, both in entertaining and life in general. Tonight is the perfect example. Park has planned an evening at his new Jupiter home to honor friends Diana and Llwyd Ecclestone for their philanthropic work. Much like a composer, he has expertly brought together an array of harmonious components (musical performers, a renowned chef, thoughtful wine selections, a handful of personal touches and trusted party planner Florence Seiler) that, while impressive on their own, combine to form something truly memorable.

In his own way, Park has created an opus for guests to enjoy.

It’s hard to imagine a better muse for hosting than Park’s Tuscan-style palatial abode. Nestled on 1.14 acres in the tony Bear’s Club, the home represents four and a half years of work. “At this point in my life, I just wanted to do a house from scratch and do it the way I had envisioned it,” Park says. “That’s why it took so long.”

Upon inspection, his vision proves breathtaking.

Visitors crossing the threshold face an interesting dilemma: where to cast their gaze first. The expansive interior flows from one seating area to the next, with elegant furniture arrangements, rather than dividing walls, segmenting the space. It’s clear that Park has thought out every nook and cranny and managed to achieve a polished look without sacrificing warmth.

Perhaps the most intriguing fixtures are those hanging on the walls. Park boasts an impressive collection of 64

artwork. While there are numerous classic pieces that have been in his family for years, his recent affinity is for twentieth-century Colombian artists Fernando Botero and Enrique Grau.

“When I met Nathalie, I had to have touches of Spain and South America,” Park says, referring to Nathalie Fernandez de la Valle, his Spanish-born lady friend.

Guests are invited to share in the couple’s artistic passion. Works by both artists hang in the dining room. This evening, the table is set with a stylish combination of crystal and china in white and gold with Tiffany blue accent pieces. The open dining area is strategically placed next to the living room and adjacent to the bar and kitchen.

If you want to stretch your legs and go around the corner, then you can have a drink or take a deep breath and come back. I like friendly atmospheres when entertaining. If you make everyone feel relaxed, they’ll have a good time.”

Part of that desired relaxation comes in the form of music, a constant in Park’s life. Before joining the family steel business, Park Corporation in Cleveland, Park studied music and is a classically trained pianist. “With the house designed exactly the way I did for entertainment, it works really well to have different environments for music in different rooms,” he says.

Park has planned five musical performances of varied genres to complement the evening’s progression. Several of the faces may be familiar to Palm Beachers: Blind virtuoso pianist David Crohan, who, along with vocalist Chris James, performs during the reception, is a beloved fixture at Café L’Europe; Bob Folse, a classical Latin guitar-

ist, alternates performing during dinner service with Paul Davis, a pianist who appears at Club Colette; the night is capped off by Francesco Valpa, a tenor in residence with the Palm Beach Opera, accompanied by Sergio Puig. Park also has hired a mariachi band to play in the front courtyard as guests arrive.

The kitchen is abuzz with activity. Celebrity guest chef Michael Troise has commandeered the gourmet grade appliances and Brazilian hardwood island countertop.

Troise, a former auction director for NY Wines Christie’s who has worked with many of the greatest Manhattan restaurants, is creating an exquisite five-course offer-

ing that would bring the most discerning epicure to his knees. Each course (sautéed almond-crusted diver scallops, fire-seared Chilean sea bass, foie gras ravioli) is more decadent than the previous, with the coup de grâce Troise’s interpretation of meat and potatoes—the grilled calotte of Kobe beef with sweet truffled potato chiffon.

Dinner ends with a spiced ginger ice cream with brandied caramelized banana.

Troise is aided by two unlikely helpers—former PGA Tour player turned entrepreneur/investor Ted Mandes and Mark Stevens, managing director of the Private Client Group at National City. The pair came as part of a

package deal with Troise at the Palm Beach Wine Auction benefiting the education programs at the Kravis Center.

“The original idea was that I auction off Michael,” Mandes says. “When I got up on stage I said, ‘I’ll not only auction him off, I’ll become the sous chef and Mark Stevens will become the sommelier.’”

That prompted Park to make the winning bid.

Considering the musical program and thought that has gone into the evening, one would expect a robust crowd.

Tonight’s guest list, however, includes only eight—the Ecclestones, Paula and Nikita Zukov, Karen Swanson, Bernard Devlin, and Jeff and Liz Bateman.

Honoree Diana Ecclestone says these types of grand gestures are par for the course with Park.

“He’s obviously a person who’s appreciative of everything he has in life and wants to share it with people,” she says. “He doesn’t do it because he wants to impress someone—he genuinely feels that way. We just love Patrick.”

Perhaps, at the end of the day, Park’s success at hosting can be found in his unwillingness to make it about selfpromotion or take it too seriously. “We try to entertain people that we like and are friends with and new people that we’re meeting and we’d like to get to know,” he says.

“We’re not entertaining for the sake of entertaining.” ◆

PBI’S ANNUAL LOOK AT THE LATEST TRENDS IN HOME DESIGN AND DECOR “The exciting thing about this time in design is that we live in an anything-goes world. Our eyes have been trained to understand a mix of styles so, to make an impression and feel new, visual juxtapositions need to be jarring,” says designer and part-time Palm Beacher Jonathan Adler.

These words rang true while putting together our annual look at design trends. We were surprised how often one trend would blend so easily with another in bold and interesting ways.

We found graphic patterns on everything from pillows to wallpaper. From subdued hues and tone-on-tone shades to the bright citrus colors that are popping up (and popping out) in decor for both inside and outside your home.

Here in South Florida, outdoor decor is as important as indoor items, with full kitchens and luxurious seating areas making it easy to entertain and fully enjoy the balmy weather.

We bring a bit of the outdoors in with accents and furniture that feature a botanical flair, from floral-printed chairs to accessories decorated with jeweled flowers. Color and botanicals also are two elements that have a strong presence in decor inspired by India, which adds international flair in a livable way.

We hope you enjoy our look at five trends that keep evolving. Don’t be afraid to borrow a bit from each to create a home that is a perfect reflection of your personality and lifestyle.

GRAPHIC PRINTS PATTERN PUNCH “I am definitely rooted in modernism but in a maximalist way,” says Adler, who is famous for his boldly patterned designs.

“I embrace bold colors, groovy graphics and modern forms and put them all together in my mental blender. Graphic patterns are always beautiful and chic and make you feel happy.”

Make a statement with the latest in geometric and graphic patterns; the bigger and bolder the pattern the better. Intimidated? Don’t be. Start simple with some throw pillows or an area rug with a repeating pattern. Step up to upholstery, or cover the walls with geometric wallpaper. While smaller, more subtle patterns are always going to be available, take a chance and do an anchor wall with a paper that is a traditional print, but bigger and bolder in pattern size and color.

PASSAGE TO INDIA Health and well being lend themselves to a trend in Indian decor as much as style and texture do. According to Alex Dickson of Alex Dickson Interiors in West Palm Beach, the stress of the times is forcing people to look within to find peace of mind. “People are getting more exposed to [Indian culture],” he says. “With that I think comes exposure to the Eastern philosophies … I think people are looking to that more to find calm and peace, and trying to bring that into their design and their interiors to create more of a sanctuary at home where they can be at peace and be relaxed.”

Luxurious fabrics and textures are cornerstones of Indian decor. Throw pillows, as well as oversized floor pillows, are boldly colored, with detailed embroidery featuring paisleys, flowers and even beading. “[There are] a lot of reds, oranges and vibrant colors like those saffron [shades],” Dickson says. “Deep rich reds, purples, some pinks. … very energetic colors. Color is big.”

GROWING ON YOU Botanical prints and patterns never really go out of style, but today’s designs are not just your grandmother’s chintz pillows.

Flowers and vines range from small and dainty to big and bold tropical prints. And luckily, these blooms will never fade, and they don’t need watering.

Using different types of florals all together can get overwhelming, but you can pull them together with solids and even geometric patterns, like checks and stripes.

“I am a bit of a purist,” says Allison Paladino, ASID, of Allison Paladino Interior Design in Palm Beach. “I tend to limit prints and choose complimentary, small patterns. I usually have two, depending on scale. My sofas are usually solids.”

When mixing botanicals with other patterns, size does matter. “Scale is probably the biggest thing, so [the patterns] don’t fight one another, but complement one another,” Paladino says.

She also encourages fun with color. “If you have a multicolored botanical print, a plaid or some sort of multicolored pattern is fabulous to complement it.”

STEP OUTSIDE “There’s nothing more magical than being outdoors in the dark, and having just candlelight on the table,” says Leta Foster of Leta Austin Foster & Associates in Palm Beach. What better way to enjoy the great outdoors than in beautifully appointed outdoor living spaces, complete with luxurious seating or a grand dining table for family and friends to gather around.

Outdoor kitchens are gaining popularity, from built-in grills to full-blown gourmet kitchens with all the amenities of indoor ones. “They do it quite often out west. In the last couple of years, it’s become more and more popular on the East Coast,” says Karen Kirk of Island Living & Patio in West Palm Beach. “It just adds a whole extension to an existing home.”

Outdoor fabrics are now available in durable yet soft iterations and fashionable patterns, while the furniture itself is being made stronger and specially treated to withstand the salt air and sun.

CITRUS COLORS FRESH SQUEEZED This is the Sunshine State, and home to hundreds of acres of orange groves. Take your color cues from the produce section—bright lemon yellows, zesty lime greens and, of course, pure Florida orange. These hues add pop to any decor, even if it’s as simple as a lime green throw pillow, or a bright orange vase.

“I love, love, love color. I think that color is the ultimate antidepressant,” says Adler. “How can you feel sad if you are eating your cereal out of a bright orange bowl?”

A little does go a long way when it comes to using these juicy citrus shades, but you can still have fun with them. “If you show some restraint in a basic scheme, you are free to dollop in little tiny punches of color as contrast,” Adler says. “I’ve never said no to a splash of lemon yellow.”

September can be one of the hottest months of the year in Florida, the last stretch of tropical weather before the balminess of the season. At such times, our thoughts turn to crisp, high-acid white wines and soft, low-tannin reds.

Argentina is one of the best-selling wine categories at the moment, and the signature white wine grape is Torrontés. Light and refreshing, with floral aromas and luscious fruit, it livens up an afternoon at the pool as well as a platter of shellfish. While no two producers seem

to agree on its origins, research indicates it is related to the Muscat family of European grapes. Reliable versions are the Terrazas de Los Andes Reserva and the Nómade Tomás Achával, both of which sell around $20.

Americans continue their love affair with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Featuring exotic aromatics, bracing acidity, and vivid flavors of grapefruit and melon, it reminds us that the start of stone crab season is only a few months away. Cloudy Bay Vineyards established the category in the United States several decades ago, and

their success spawned a profusion of labels to choose from. Whether you select a large, reliable producer such as Kim Crawford ($20) or a boutique version such as the Te Muna Road Vineyard from Craggy Range ($30), you’ll experience one of the most exciting white wines on the market.

Floridians have finally realized that Riesling is one of the perfect wines for our climate and lifestyle. Low in alcohol and high in acidity, it can accompany a wide range of foods and be consumed at any hour of the day. Consumers are discovering the versatility of Kabinett bottlings from estates such as Schloss Vollrads ($25) in the Rheingau region of Germany or the vineyard-designated Wehlener Sonnenuhr from the Mosel’s J.J. Prüm ($40).

When it comes to red wines, the ideal hot weather selection is low in tannin.

While tannin is a natural preservative that

adds structure and aging potential to the best reds, a little bit goes a long way during the summer. One of the best wines in this category is Beaujolais, and we don’t mean Nouveau. Look for one of the Crus such as Julienas, Brouilly, St. Amour or Moulin-àVent. Some of the most consistent and available versions are from the Maison Louis Jadot properties in Beaujolais, Château des Jacques and Château des Lumières, which sell for $25-$35. For optimum enjoyment, serve these wines slightly chilled.

Pinot Noir may still be the king of lowtannin reds, but other grape varieties can be just as soft, silky and pleasant. Grenache is the main red wine grape of the southern Rhône Valley, famous for producing fullbodied wines such as Gigondas and Châteauneuf du Pape. It is also the mainstay of Côtes du Rhône, and many of these wines are fresh, forward and unoaked, perfect for

a September barbecue. Look for Côtes du Rhône Villages from areas such as Cairanne, Rasteau and Sablet. Savvy consumers should also consider Spanish versions such as Las Rocas Garnacha Viñas Viejas (old vines) from Calatayud, retailing for $20.

Sangiovese is the main grape variety of Tuscany, known for powerful and full-bodied red wines. Rather than a Brunello di Montalcino, look for a Rosso di Montalcino for hot weather consumption; they receive less oak aging and are lighter and easier to drink. Good examples are made by Nardi, Altesino, Caparzo and Il Poggione, and sell in the $20-$30 range. Similarly, avoid Chianti Classico Riservas in favor of a Classico or simple Sangiovese bottling, which will be fresher and more approachable. Cooler weather will be upon us soon, and it will be time to drink our full-bodied reds with steak, lamb or game. ◆

The Leopard Lounge and Restaurant has existed since 1989, when the Red Carnation Hotel Collection purchased the landmark 1926 building and converted it into The Chesterfield Palm Beach, the sister hotel of The Chesterfield in London’s Mayfair.

In its current incarnation, the restaurant consists of 100 seats arranged around a small dance floor and a large, U-shaped bar. Ornate, tufted red drapes frame the windows, and comfortable leather chairs complement the formal place settings. Glance up at the hand-painted ceiling, and you will spy naked nymphs cavorting in a sea of red clouds.

In the midst of this partly traditional and partly risqué decor is some very good food.

The kitchen is in the capable hands of Executive Chef Gerard Coughlin, a Florida native who has been at The Chesterfield since 2004.

His menu pays homage to a number of classic dishes, yet also adds some well-executed modern touches.

Dinner begins with a large and admirably fresh Lump Crab Cake ($17) packed with sweet crabmeat, and served with a grain mustard sauce and a citrus rémoulade. A salad of spicy baby arugula ($13) is augmented with dried cherries, honey-roasted pistachios and slices of poached pear, studded with chunks of fresh goat cheese and dressed with a Champagne vinaigrette. Like the rest of Coughlin’s repertoire, they are attractively and artistically presented, and are as pleasant to look at as they are to consume.

Entrées are prepared just as deftly. Roast Duckling ($30) is tender and flavorful, accompanied by cranberry walnut stuffing and bathed in an intense orange reduction. Pristine, sushi-quality ahi tuna ($30) is charred on the grill and served perfectly rare. It is garnished with jasmine rice and seafood salad, arranged

on a bed of sautéed Oriental vegetables, and enhanced with a miso vinaigrette.

Desserts also lean toward the classical and familiar—crème brûlée, bananas Foster for two, molten chocolate cake. The Sticky Toffee Pudding ($9) is a delight. Consisting of a cake made with dates, it is surrounded by a pool of hot toffee sauce and served with your choice of ice cream.

The wine list is the only disappointment at The Leopard Lounge. Thanks to Red Carnation’s association with BouchardFinlayson Estates from South Africa, these wines are offered on an exclusive basis; unfortunately, the vintages are out of date (white wines from 2002, Pinot Noir from 2004). The rest of the list consists of commercial wines at very high markups—witness the $48 bottle of Brancott Sauvignon Blanc that accompanied our meal.

After 9 p.m., the bar fills up, the dance

floor is occupied, and a band entertains until after midnight on weekends. Like Ta-boó, The Leopard Lounge has always had an aura of naughtiness around it. You may not misbehave while you’re there, but it’s exciting to think that someone else probably will. ◆

Strolling down Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach on a gorgeous South Florida day, you will pass dozens of restaurants and cafés. Lots to choose from for dinner, but too few options for breakfast and lunch—that is, until the recent opening of Atlantique Café.

The brainchild of Francis Touboul, owner of Delray Beach’s La Cigale, Atlantique is a quaint and charming restaurant with a European atmosphere. It specializes in breakfast and lunch, both of which are served all day.

The menu features both American and French favorites (as well as daily specials) including omelets, a Reuben sandwich, escargots cassolette and moules frites, all at surprising prices.

“It’s a better deal for the customer,” says Touboul, who saw a need for a moderately priced restaurant that serves outstanding food.

Popular menu items are the gyros and the Atlantique Café Spinach Salad, which features strawberries, crispy chicken, red onions, blue cheese, walnuts and, of course, spinach, tossed in a raspberry dressing. There also is a salad station, where guests can have a made-to-order plate of garden-fresh ingredients, as well as a bakery and to-go dishes for meals on the run.

Guests can expect the same quality food and service they receive at La Cigale. Touboul uses the same ingredients and suppliers for Atlantique, and the kitchen and wait staff handle both restaurants with ease.

Almost 4,000 people participated in Palm Beach County’s 2008 effort, collecting more than 29,000 pounds of trash and making Florida’s cleanup the fourth largest in this worldwide event.

Since the event falls on the same day as Rosh Hashanah, there are alternate dates listed on the KPBCB’s website.

Data about the collected trash is compiled and sent to the Conservancy’s national headquarters in Washington, D.C., where it is used for research purposes and as ammunition for public policy initiatives.

“The purpose is to educate people on marine life while they clean,” says Lourdes Ferris, KPBCB executive director. “We’re really focusing on cigarette butts right now because they are the No. 1 item that is picked up on beaches, and they are made from plastic, which takes seven to 10 years to degrade.”

While the most popular sites people volunteer at are the beaches, there also are other locations.

“People forget how vulnerable Florida’s interior freshwater system of lagoons and lakes is,” says Ginny Powell, environmental program supervisor for Palm Beach County’s department of environmental resources management. “A lot of the trash and debris enters the freshwater areas from the inlet, and the drainage system and wildlife get disrupted.”
