So Much to Love ebruary is the month of love, so this issue is dedicated to all the things we are passionate about—everything from treasured friendships to iconic design to causes that are dear to our hearts.

Affairs of the heart come and go, but true friendship endures. We singled out five pairs of best friends whose relationships—whether newly cemented or dating back to preschool—are bulletproof. In “Best Friends Forever,” on page 86, we learn about the joys, trials, rituals, humor, and even the occasional bouts of mischief that make a friendship last.

On the design front, we are nothing if not passionate about Oscar de la Renta. The man who dresses le tout Palm Beach not only is always on the mark with his designs, he also is the perfect gentleman. In “Simply Oscar” (page 82), he talks about the serendipitous journey that led to his iconic fashion house—which, by the way, is entering its forty-fifth year—and his own passionate pursuits, from gardening to philanthropy.

While we’re on the subject of philanthropy: This month marks the fifty-fifth anniversary of the Palm Beach Heart Ball, the oldest Heart Ball in the nation, and Palm Beachers are in for an incredible party. The reason? There are two, actually: Melania Trump and Petra Levin. The cochairs of this year’s ball are more than pretty faces planning a glamorous evening. They have taken a personal interest in heart health. In “Taking it to Heart,” Melania and Petra pose for photographer Gio Alma, and share their insights on why heart disease prevention is more important than ever.

He won five Emmys for his HBO talk show Dennis Miller Live, has written four books and spent two seasons co-hosting Monday Night Football. Miller, the host of a selftitled nationally syndicated radio show, is performing February 20 at the Boca Raton Resort & Club for the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance, which benefits The Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County.

■ WHAT COMEDIANS INFLUENCED YOU? As a little kid, Jonathan Winters. He was a brilliant physical standup comedian, very whimsical. And ironically, the comedian who is most connected to him and who is out of my era, Robin Williams. When I saw Robin’s first HBO special, I remember thinking that was intoxicating and I would like to try that.

■ WERE YOU ALWAYS INTERESTED IN POLITICS? I started doing the “Weekend Update” on Saturday Night Live years ago and that’s what got me into it. Prior to that I wasn’t a very political comedian.

It became my job description. It was a good way to turn your act over. I see some comedians [with] the same jokes for 10 years. When you have a newspaper, you can go through it on a daily basis and over the course of six months turn your act over.

■ WHAT’S YOUR CONNECTION WITH THE EVENT? They called and I told them that it sounds a little too high-brow for me. Don’t you want to get Grace Kelly or someone? They’ve had a good pedigree there.

Jay [Leno] and Bill [Cosby] are the best at this. I’ll have to adjust my game a little bit, because with an evening like this you have to show a little more decorum. Plus the Boys & Girls Clubs, they do beautiful work so how can you go wrong there?

The Love portion of the title refers to the tiny Indonesian island of Bali, and the reference couldn’t be more appropriate. There is much here to love, and though the once-pristine paradise has long since been discovered, the vibrancy of the culture is irresistible.

Ubud, the little artists’ colony in the island’s interior where the final portion of Gilbert’s memoir is set, has managed to maintain its identity and charm despite the onslaught of tourism. Set in the midst of terraced rice fields, where straw-hatted farmers work the land on misty mornings, the town is known as the spiritual home of the Balinese arts, from painting and silversmithing to music and dance. Everywhere you turn there is an artist’s workshop, or a Barong performance, or the chime of a gamelan.

I contemplate this as I stand on the terrace of the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, watching a group of young girls move rhythmically to the sounds of traditional Balinese instruments. Their headdresses, delicately crafted of tooled leather and frangi-pani blossoms, shimmer and quiver to the beat. With swan-like movements and wide eyes they tell the story of lost princesses and fallen kings. All the while, the sounds of tiny gongs, cymbals and the xylophone-like gamelan harmonize with the rushing waters of the Ayung River.

exactly, but rather the roof of the main hotel, an elliptical structure that cascades down a hillside to the river’s edge. You descend to the lobby, and on down to the restaurants, spa and library.

The architectural theme of descent is repeated in the villas, which are sprawled across 18 acres of gardens. The roof is a pond, and steps lead down to the villa itself. Decorated in a contemporary Asian style, each villa’s simplicity is warmed by teak furnishings and Indonesian textiles. Private plunge pools and outdoor showers allow guests to connect with the outdoors, which play a significant role in the Sayan experience. By design, every road leads to a pond, or a jewel of a garden, or the shores of the Ayung.

It’s hard not to feel the spirituality to which Gilbert was referring. There is a meditative quality in Ubud, owed as much to the peaceful surroundings as to the artistic leanings of its denizens. In a woodcarving workshop, the artist looks serene as he chips away at a teak log that will ultimately become a sculpture of a mythical garuda bird. In a tiny roadside theater, a puppe60

teer practices a disappearing art: performing scenes from the epic Ramakien with antique shadow puppets. Even the homes, with their carved wood doorways and temple-like architecture, look like works of art.

As classic testosterone-fueled, he-man movies go, Tom Cruise in Top Gun ranks as the crème de la crème. Six-g barrel rolls in an F-14 Tomcat, or catapult launches off a carrier; now that’s necksnapping performance.

So, presuming that Cruise’s character, Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, rode off into the sunset with Kelly McGillis, landed a job in software and made a killing, what would he drive?

No question about it—a 2010 Bentley Continental Supersports.

With a thundering 621 horsepower from its twin-turbo, 12-cylinder engine, a top speed of 204 mph and a deployable rear wing to 64

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Florida.

Some 2,400 Americans die of cardiovascular disease every day.

More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next five causes of death combined.

If Petra Levin and Melania Trump had their way, these statistics would be rewritten in the past tense. The two women—one a golden-haired German beauty, the other a Slovenian former model—are using their considerable clout to call attention to the dangers of heart disease. As the co-chairs of this year’s Palm Beach Heart Ball, held on February 13 at The Mar-a-Lago Club, Trump and Levin aim to raise significant dollars for the American Heart Association’s research and educational programming.

For Trump, this chairmanship is momentous. Though she and husband Donald have lent their names to several causes, she has never before chaired a major event in Palm Beach. This is Trump’s first hands-on role, and she is taking it seriously. “I am involved in every detail from A to Z,” she says. “I like to be 100-percent involved in anything I give my time to.”

Her debut promises to be impressive. A few of the highlights: Sir Elton John has signed on as the international honorary chairman. The ball will feature a glamorous vintage Hollywood theme with a modern twist. Michael Kors and Graff are key sponsors, bringing a high-fashion element to the equation. And the crowd will be a who’s who of international society.

She credits her partnership with Levin for the imminent success of the fifty-fifth annual ball—the oldest Heart Ball in the nation. “She’s a great lady and we have a great time,” Trump says of her co-chair. “We have the same vision for the ball: young, elegant, very international.”

“We wanted to restore the era when balls were elegant 80

and formal affairs,” Levin adds. “We are extremely grateful for the committed Heart Ball supporters, but we wanted to attract a new audience as well.”

Though they are planning a fun party, Trump and Levin have a higher purpose: to draw attention to the cause, particularly the fact that heart disease impacts so many women. According to AHA statistics, cardiovascular disease claims the lives of about 450,000 women every year.

That’s almost one a minute.

Trump and Levin support AHA’s Go Red for Women campaign to educate women about the disease and encourage them to make healthier choices. “People don’t know how many women have heart problems, and how important it is to take care of ourselves,” Trump says. “The goal is to get the message out and to get people talking about [heart disease]. We are bringing people here who can help spread the word.”

For Levin, this commitment has personal meaning.

Heart disease has touched the family of her husband, Stephen. “I never met my father-in-law [Leonard Levin], because he died [at age 65] of heart disease, and always felt very sad about it,” she says. “By helping raise money for the Heart Association, I feel like I am connecting on some level with Steve’s father.”

Because “that happens to too many families,” Levin says, it is more important than ever to get the word out and to fund groundbreaking research that will eventually slash the grim mortality figures. If that means using one’s profile to do so, then so be it.

“I like this about Melania,” Levin says. “She has a beautiful marriage and child, but she is taking the time to raise money in the community she’s in. She doesn’t have to do it. She chooses to use her celebrity for something important.” u

Reports of Oscar de la Renta’s old-school Latin charm are not at all exaggerated.

Let’s just say the 77-year-old designer is positively bewitching when trying to end a telephone conversation that creeps a few minutes longer than expected. Vacationing at his home in Punta Cana, an idyllic resort in his native Dominican Republic, you’d think he’d grow impatient with his caller, drop a few hints about the stark white sand and tranquil ocean that await him, maybe even huff out a “Look, I really have to go” and hang up.

But he doesn’t. Ever hospitable, de la Renta patiently answers questions until he finds just the right moment to explain that he’s calling from a friend’s office line, so he really can’t stay on the phone much longer.

“Did you get everything you need?,” he asks in his lilting accent.

Leave it to de la Renta to worry about making sure a woman gets what she needs. Known for more than four decades as a designer who infuses elegantly adorned suits and gowns with his Latin American vision of femininity, de la Renta has endeared himself to a social set in search of the right dress for every occasion.

“He is the designer who dresses an Uptown woman in the tradition of a Babe Paley or Jackie O.,” says Laird Borrelli-Persson, senior features editor at style.com, the online home of Vogue. “We’re talking about a very polished woman with great legs, whose hair is always done, someone who is going to the Met or to the Hamptons.”

The Oscar woman is someone like Palm Beach resident and jewelry designer Laura Munder. Munder has been a longtime admirer

of his exquisite workmanship and use of bold color, beautiful fabrics and well-chosen embellishments.

“His pieces are timeless, wearable works of art,” Munder says.

“The first Oscar piece I bought was a black velvet jacket where the yoke and cuffs were embroidered and beaded with this tribal design in oranges and reds. It’s a striking piece that I’ve been wearing for years and people still ask me where I got it.”

People from all walks of life appreciate the artistry, Munder says.

“I have another piece that is a turquoise boiled wool jacket with brown stitching and embroidery with some beading,” she says. “I was at the airport checking my bags at the curb and the man checking my bags told me the jacket was the prettiest thing he’d ever seen.

People simply appreciate beautiful things when they see them.”

De la Renta’s beautiful creations appeal to actresses (Penélope Cruz, Sarah Jessica Parker) and political ladies (Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton and Cindy McCain) too. Borrelli-Persson says nostalgia for Babe and Jackie refinement draws his newer aficionados, who want something “traditional, but not boring.”

Take former First Daughter Jenna Bush, for example, who may have proven Oscar love is genetic (her mother, former First Lady Laura Bush, wore an Oscar gown to her husband’s 2005 inauguration). For her 2008 wedding, the younger Bush chose a curve-hugging, v-neck organza de la Renta gown with ornate beading.

Renta began sketching fashions for newspapers and magazines.

Soon, he was hired by designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, whom he calls “probably the greatest designer of the 1950s and 1960s.”

“Once I was there I really fell in love with fashion and felt like that was something that I really liked to do and could succeed at,” he says. He eventually moved to Paris, where he worked for Antonio Castillo at Lanvin as a couture assistant, and then to New York, where he worked for Elizabeth Arden before launching his own line in 1965.

He gave up painting, but his art school days heavily influenced his work. “One of the classes I took as a student was the history of art, which is very much linked to fashion,” he says. “Fashion is a reflection of the times in which we live, and one of the biggest indicators of what history was like was to look at how people were dressed. The one thing that I believe is lacking today in a lot of fashion students is an understanding of fashions throughout history. You always have to be able to look back to look forward.

So many times I am talking to students and they can talk to you about the influence of the ’50s, ’60s and ’80s in fashion, but they cannot go further back. If they could, they’d have a much deeper well of work from which to dig for ideas.”

His mentors—Castillo and Balenciaga—also influenced his

“Women also had different roles. For example, they were identified in captions as the wife of a publishing magnate. Now the wife is the magnate. Roles have changed, and there’s much more scrutiny than there used to be. People change outfits between events and women have more spending power and choice than they used to have.”

The most high profile example of this modern woman is First Lady Michelle Obama, who has embraced not only J.Crew, but also young designers such as Jason Wu and Isabel Toledo. Oscar famously criticized Obama for wearing a sweater to meet Queen Elizabeth II, but eventually clarified his remarks on The View, explaining that she should be wearing higher end items to these events in order to help out the fashion industry.

De la Renta acknowledges the challenges of making a more economically empowered woman fall in love with his work, as well as the challenges of designing in a down economy. But he chooses to be inspired by it, rather than discouraged.

“Regardless of what the economy is doing, women are not going to go naked in the streets,” he says. “And I won’t be making dresses out of potato sacks, either.”

And to think: There was a time when de la Renta wasn’t even interested in fashion. He originally moved to Spain in 1950 to study painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. Determined to show his father that he could make money as an artist, de la 84

designs. De la Renta says he incorporated Castillo’s knack for creating ultra-feminine clothes and Balenciaga’s skill at finding new ways to cut and construct designs into his work.

As the business of fashion has changed and big name houses have been purchased by large conglomerates such as LVMH, de la Renta has been one of the rare few designers to maintain control over his business, enlisting family members (his daughter, sonin-law and adopted son work with him in various capacities) to help him along the way.

“With [Oscar], it’s not about drama; it’s about the clothes and hard work,” Borrelli-Persson says. “It’s a question of determination. He started this business and maintained a certain level of success and a very loyal following. He is training his son [Moises, whom he adopted in 1984] to continue in his tradition.”

For de la Renta, it’s all about being true to his vision. Though the economy is struggling, de la Renta says staying true to that vision helps his business remain strong.

In his spare time, de la Renta, an avid gardener, says he is “always doing something,” but is mostly active in developing Punta Cana, running La Casa del Niño, an orphanage and school he started in 1982, and giving back to his native country in “any way I can.”

But in Palm Beach, home to one of his strongest fan bases, aficionados like Munder continue to create memories in his beautiful gowns.

“About a decade ago I went to Texas to talk to Neiman Marcus about my jewelry collection,” she recalls. “I returned home on my birthday and I was very tired and it was late. But my husband told me to go upstairs and put on my most beautiful dress. I told him I didn’t want to because I was tired. But he insisted that I change, so I did. I put on this long, red Oscar dress that zips up the front and has this ornate gold thread and green chenille on it.

My husband blindfolded me and walked me out back, where he had this tent set up and it was straight out of a Merchant Ivory film.”

Inside the tent: Munder’s favorite food, wine, music and scattered rose petals.

“It was one of the most romantic nights of my life, even though I started off being uncooperative,” she recalls. “My husband wanted everything to be so romantic, so perfect, and he wanted to be sure I felt beautiful, so I wore this magnificent dress.”

Behind that magnificent dress was Oscar, a perfect gentleman with Old World charm, who made his way creating things for women like Munder, who simply wanted to feel beautiful. u

+ ANGELA CULVEYHOUSE These two Southern Belles met—where else?—at a Junior League meeting. “Carin is an honest friend, which is hard to find,” says Angela Culveyhouse (right), owner of Palm Beach Medical. “We grew up about 30 minutes from each other, even though we didn’t know each other growing up, and I think we value the same qualities.” It wasn’t long before she and Carin Acree of U.S. Trust Bank of America Private Wealth Management were shopping together, volunteering together, flying up for SEC football games and getting together with their beaus for weekend dinners.

She’s a great friend because ...

Angela: She is always there for me, no matter the day or time or what I need.

Sometimes it’s something really small, like reminding me to do something, and sometimes it’s something big.

Wow! Honestly, I can’t stand the smell of it, but she definitely gets the cool stamp in my book for being able to hang with the guys and drink it.

Carin: Yes, it’s quite annoying that she can just pick up and travel the world or go helicopter flying whenever she wants, since she has a pilot’s license. Love that I get great stories out of it, though.

Friendship rituals Angela: We both end up stopping by each other’s work at the end of the work day. I think sometimes you end up having more fun when something isn’t planned and it’s spontaneous.

Carin: We always end up in the kitchen, though I’m a little tense when she asks me to cook with her. I can NOT cook!

ZACH BELL As two of South Florida’s most passionate and preeminent chefs, Michelle Bernstein and Zach Bell don’t spend much time outside the kitchen—which seems to be just fine with the James Beard Foundation. Zach, chef de cuisine at Café Boulud in Palm Beach, met Miami culinaire Michelle—aka “Michy”—in 2003 during the South Beach Food & Wine Festival while she was at the helm of Azul at the Mandarin Oriental, Miami. “Daniel Boulud and Pierre Hermé were there, pretty intense,” says Michelle, who has since opened Michy’s and Sra. Martinez, both in Miami, as well as her eponymous restaurant at the Omphoy Ocean Resort in Palm Beach and MB in Cancun. “I liked Zach from the moment I met him—totally down to earth, very cool.”

Common goals Zach: We live to make strangers feel like family through our cooking and hospitality. Between Michelle’s involvement with Common Threads and my own with Share Our Strength, we both recognize not everyone is fortunate in this world, and that giving back to the community is an important role that we must play in addition to being chefs.

Michelle: All we do is cook for people, all day long, all the time, whether in our own places or for all the different charity functions we are a part of.

Mutual inspirations Michelle: He gives the best advice about finding the best products grown locally. Zach is so involved in home-grown foods; he always sends me names and numbers of the best local farmers with the most delicious products.

Zach: She gives the best advice about having a more delicate touch in cooking and presentation. I always remember how cool it was when my wife and I ate at Azul and she presented a single dish “for lovers to share.” No dude would have done that, but it strengthens the core family value of sharing mealtime.

Friendly reminders Michelle: I always think of him when I see chefs who love what they do—it exudes from their pores. Zach is so passionate about food and cooking. Whenever I see young people just out of culinary school, I can’t think of a better role model than Zach to teach them.

Zach: I always think of her when I make bouillabaisse—Michelle’s is my fave!

Shiny happy people Michelle: Zach has the most calming way about him. He is very honest, simple and good, inside and out. And I love his wife [pastry chef Jennifer Reed]!

When they’re not shopping, planning parties or having breakfast together, restaurateur Jan-Marie Coniglio Cook (left) and Blair Griffin, co-founder of It! Weddings & Events, are on the phone, texting or Facebook messaging one another. Though sometimes among friends, words aren’t necessary. “One of my favorite days with Jan was the day I went to purchase my wedding dress,” says Blair, who will marry Stuart Kirwan on April 10 at Gulf Stream Bath & Tennis Club in Delray Beach. “As soon as I came out of the fitting room with ‘the dress,’ Jan burst into tears and we hugged. It was a moment I will never forget.”

How they met Jan: We worked together at C. Orrico in the spring of 2002. Blair was probably the single preppiest person I had ever seen, and growing up in Palm Beach that was quite a feat. She was wearing a Lilly corduroy whale print skirt and matching cashmere sweater with color coordinated loafers and a hair bow—in the dead heat of Florida!

Blair: I distinctly remember Jan making fun of my outfit.

Her best feature Blair: Jan is the most incredible mother. I have never seen someone multitask like she does. At 29, she is a wife, mother, best friend, teacher and party planner for E.R. Bradley’s [Saloon in West Palm Beach]. Her children are precious and I am blessed to be a part of their lives.

Jan: Her sense of family. In a large one 90

such as mine, Blair fit in seamlessly as the “seventh sister.” This might actually be a blessing and a curse for her, though, as she is along for all the good and all the bad, but without the blood ties.

Favorite memories Jan: Where to start? She comes to Christmas Eve midnight mass with my family every year, even though she’s not Catholic. She sang and danced to “I Will Survive” with the band and my sisters at my wedding. She threw me my first-ever surprise birthday party at 29. ...

Blair: Jan has a serious tendency to trip, slip and fall. I remember sitting at Bradley’s eating lunch and Jan was running around like always, and she slipped and totally wiped out. Everyone around us was dead silent and here I was, hysterically laughing. Everyone, of course, looked at me and was horrified. My quick response was, “It’s okay … I’m her best friend.”

Nearly 30 years later, they’re still tight, catching Miami Dolphins games and playing basketball together, then heading out for dinner and drinks. “There are so many memories—from skiing when we were kids, our trips to Aspen and the Bahamas, white-water rafting, going to Camp Samoset together in Maine,” says Dana. Dana: He reminds me of the time we both had broken arms during the same summer (me from playing basketball, him from roller-blading), and when we talk about our Bahamas trip in college. We walked into a filthy hotel room and I was so disgusted that I kicked in the closet doors.

Gregory: He gets frustrated about little things—he needs to chill.

I knew he was a good friend when …

Dana: Years ago, after I was sucker-punched by a guy out of nowhere, Greg jumped in and knocked the guy out. He is a great friend because he is very loyal. He gives the best advice because he is always positive, no matter what the situation is.

Gregory: I always did. He is like a big brother who is always there no matter what, always has good advice—about football first, and real estate second.

Little-known facts Gregory: Dana had the biggest collection of game-day magazines from the Dolphins games. He must have had all of them dating back to 1984.

Also, Dana has a daughter named Alexis and my wife’s name is Alexis.

We started dating just a few days after Dana’s Alexis was born.

Dana: We always used to go out for Chinese food on Sunday nights—so much so that when we were 10 or so, we used to bet football with the chef. We were even the taste testers for the menu prior to Jeff [Peng] opening up Coco in Palm Beach.

While the lifelong friends spend much time together in Palm Beach, they chat at least once a week when Kelly returns to her home in North Carolina, and Rachel to hers in Atlanta. “In many ways we are somewhat yin and yang, and our roles would switch, yet constantly keep each other in balance,” says Kelly, a descendant of Henry Flagler. childhood moments Kelly: As children we were part monkeys, climbing trees, building forts. Rachel was more cautious than me, but we had fun spying on our parents and neighbors. We both have fond memories of playing during my parents’ parties. We would sip Champagne and feel that we were so grown up.

Rachel: Definitely the day when her much adored grandmother, Jean Flagler Matthews, opened up the Flagler Museum just for the two of us.

We were probably about 7 years old, and we spent the day running amok in the museum, playing with the china dolls and exploring every room—it was magical.

Her most endearing quality Rachel: Kelly epitomizes what it is to be a lady, which is funny because as a child she was a mischievous little rascal.

Kelly: Rachel is intelligent, fun, energetic and creative. She is insightful, a good listener and gives wise advice.

She is a loyal friend, and we can pick up where we left off, be it years or months later.

I always think of her when …

Rachel: Anytime I see or smell tea with lots of milk and sugar, or bacon, eggs and jelly. This was Kelly’s favorite breakfast growing up, and it still is.

Kelly: Watching my children light the Christmas tree at the Flagler Museum.

Treasured memories Kelly: I love the picture of us as babies, barely old enough to hold our heads up, on a blanket after a swim lesson.

Rachel: Kelly was the one friend who would run around barefoot in the backyard, climbing trees and building forts one minute, and then play with dolls and dress up in my mom’s ball gowns the next. u

TINY BUBBLES

Sparkling wine is being produced all over the world, and can make every meal a toast-worthy event.

When we see wine with bubbles, we automatically think of Champagne. This is not accidental—the major Champagne houses have conducted a public relations campaign over the course of the past century to make certain this association springs to mind.

In fact, less that 20 percent of the world’s sparkling wine is Champagne. For some of us, the Méthode Champenoise, or the painstaking process by which Champagne is made, is more important than the wine’s geographic pedigree. This time-consuming and expensive method is centered on the second fermentation in the bottle that creates carbon dioxide. When we see the term on a bottle of sparkling wine, we take it as a guarantee of quality.

Spanish Cava, or Méthode Champenoise sparkling wine, accounts for slightly more than 10 percent of the world’s bubbly. In place of the familiar Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, Cava is composed of exotic grape varieties such as Parellada, Macabeo and Xarel-lo. It is produced in the Catalonian region, around the town of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia.

Codorníu is the oldest Cava producer, with cellars dating to 1872. Along with Freixenet, they control the majority of the output, with prices that hover in the $10 range. Segura Viudas, also owned by the Ferrer family that controls Freixenet, releases their excellent Reserva Heredad ($25), which compares favorably with many non-vintage brut Champagnes.

Italy is turning out some excellent sparkling wine, although Asti Spumante still tends to dominate the public perception.

In recent years, Italy has become better known for Prosecco, made from the grape variety of the same name. While it originally gained fame as the primary ingredient in the Bellini, many consumers find it delightful on its own; travelers in the north of Italy are frequently greeted with a glass of Prosecco when entering a restaurant or private home. It is produced by the Charmat method, in which the secondary fermentation occurs in pressurized tanks rather than bottles, and is consequently more reasonable in price. Mionetto Brut ($15), one of America’s most popular brands, has a soft texture and generous

fruit profile that makes it a good match for finger foods, pasta and seafood.

California sparkling wine attracted worldwide attention in 1972, when Richard Nixon toasted Chou En-Lai with Schramsberg on his breakthrough trip to China.

Most of the major Champagne houses now have branches in California, and some are producing noteworthy sparklers. High points include Mumm Napa Blanc de Noirs ($20), Domaine Carneros Brut by Taittinger ($25) and Roederer Estate ($18).

Anyone who has visited Australia has probably sampled sparkling Shiraz. While relatively unknown in this country, it is a favorite way to begin a meal Down Under. The best are made by the Champagne

method, substituting Shiraz for the usual Chardonnay or Pinot Noir; many carry a substantial dose of sweetness, to balance the tannin contained in the red wine.

While some are expensive (Mollydooker Goosebumps sells for $45), a favorite for daily consumption is the Wyndham Estate Bin 555 Sparkling Shiraz ($15). Rich, ripe and meaty, with luscious flavors of dark berries, it pairs very well with poultry, duck, and grilled steak or lamb. ◆

When the Governor’s Club pulled out of Phillips Point in West Palm Beach several years ago, the fate of the rooftop facility was in question. Fortunately for everyone concerned, The Breakers decided to add the site to their collection of restaurants, transforming it into Top of the Point.

The entire floor has been completely remodeled, and the interior is now light, airy and inviting. Tables are well spaced, and windows seem to soar toward the sky. Look out those windows, and you survey a view of the Intracoastal Waterway, Palm Beach and the coastline to the north. In their idle moments, even the staff sneaks over to have a look.

The menu is best described as American comfort food revisited, modernized and reinterpreted. Zucchini chips ($9) are dif108 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

ficult to make properly, but this version is terrific. Literally paper-thin, the zucchini slices are lightly breaded and flash fried.

Crisp on the outside and juicy within, they are accompanied by a basil aioli and a kicked-up tomato sauce. Crab nachos ($14) are enlivened by slices of jalapeño, flanked by sides of guacamole and sour cream, and transported into another dimension by a topping of fresh jumbo lump crabmeat.

Sushi or sashimi of tuna, salmon and hamachi are available as starters, along with six different rolls; four specialty rolls were offered the night of our visit. If nostalgia gets the better of you, try the Traditional Wedding Platter ($14), consisting of franks in a blanket, bacon-wrapped scallops and Swedish meatballs.

Entrées run the gamut from chicken and dumplings to lobster pot pie. At roughly 24 ounces, the Colossal Rib Chop ($34) is a bonein rib-eye on steroids. Perfectly cooked, juicy and tender, it arrives with a twice-cooked baked potato. Cedar Plank Salmon ($26) is moist and savory; in addition to the perfume and flavor of the wood, the fish is enhanced with a glaze of whole grain mustard and balanced by an apple and raisin chutney.

palate v taste Desserts are a roll call of familiar favorites—Key lime pie, seven-layer chocolate cake, milk and cookies, and a hot fudge sundae. Light and fluffy Crêpes Suzette ($7) are bathed in the traditional Grand Marnier sauce, and accompanied by a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream.

As you might expect from The Breakers, being South Florida’s only Wine Spectator Grand Award winner, the wine list is both impressive and interesting. The 240 selections are a blend of old and new world, with good choices in half bottles and wines by the glass. A bottle of Morgadío Albariño Rias Baixas from Spain ($50) is crisp and bright, a nice foil for the food.

The coed service staff is attentive to every detail. They are outgoing and friendly, and offer personal recommendations as they guide you through the menu. Management keeps a watchful eye on the proceedings as

well, and the overall effect is a total commitment to customer service. As with the other Breakers restaurants, a 20-percent service charge is added to your check, and at times you’ll be convinced they deserve more.

The Phillips Point Club remains a private club, with the Top of the Point restricted to members for breakfast and lunch but open to the public for dinner.

Members receive discounts at Top of the Point and other Breakers restaurants, as well as priority seating in the evening, but the excellent food and spectacular view are available to everyone. ◆

WILD ON BOCA

Celebrity Chef Todd English is spreading his culinary shadow over Palm Beach County with the opening of Wild Olives by Todd English in Boca Raton.

English already has a version of his Figs restaurant in Palm Beach Gardens.

Located in the former home of Opus 5 in the Shops at Boca Center, Wild Olives features a rustic Mediterranean menu. There are plenty of handcrafted pasta dishes, as well as fresh seafood and meat items. Wild Olives is open for lunch and dinner, and will soon have a sister location, as another addition of the popular dining spot is set to open this year in West Palm Beach’s CityPlace. RESTAURANT REINVENTED The Restaurant at Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach is featuring a new menu with a more casual approach to fine dining, focusing on Atlantic seafood dishes. Executive Chef Darryl Moiles has created new signature dishes, including Dover sole, butter-poached lobster, and prosciutto-wrapped halibut.

Along with traditional meat offerings, the seafood selections, which can be personalized with a choice of sauce and side item, include wild salmon, mahi mahi, yellowtail snapper and sea scallops.

For smaller bites, there is a Savor section on the menu, which includes a few small-plate offerings that can be chosen individually, or eaten in four courses. Moiles has partnered with local organic farmers for fresh greens and vegetables, and he also pulls from the resort’s own organic herb garden. Everything is fresh and simple, yet delicious and satisfying, just like you would expect from the Four Seasons. The new concept has spread to the bar as well, with a selection of organic cocktails. GET THE BLUES The sound of fantastic music and the smell of delicious food lead to B.B. King’s Blues Club in CityPlace. The house band, B.B. The American International Fine Art Fair (Palm Beach Fair) and Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show (Palm Beach Show) are known for attracting a steady stream of local and national collectors, admirers and museum curators.

The fourteenth annual Palm Beach Fair features more than 80 international dealers that represent disciplines of fine art from classical antiquity to contemporary, and haute and period jewelry. The show takes place February 3-8 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach and a one-day pass costs $25.

The Palm Beach Show settles into the convention center February 12-16.

The show is known for its worldclass exhibitors showcasing antique jewelry, decorative objects, Asian art, furniture and fine art, and offers a lecture series. A one-day pass costs $15.

UPFRONT & PERSONAL Muriel Kaplan has devoted her life to art, as both an artist and a supporter. She also helped establish West Palm Beach’s Armory Art Center in 1987.

In honor of its co-founder, the Armory Art Center presents “Faces of Humanity,” a retrospective of Kaplan’s sculptures and drawings. Kaplan, who uses a variety of materials such as clay, bronze, resin, polyester Muriel Kaplan: charcoal and charcoal, is nationally known for her distinguished on white paper portraits of politicians, philanthropists and mythical characters. She has a unique way of capturing the subject’s traits. More than 70 pieces of Kaplan’s works, including portraits of former presidents Ronald Reagan, John F.
