TROPICAL TRINKETS

Cheers to 30 Years

Let’s be honest: the Palm Beaches are truly like no other place on earth. Sure, we’ve got beautiful weather, accomplished people, storied institutions, and historic architecture on our side. But what sets this slice of palm-studded paradise apart is the philanthropic spirit of our community. Now in its thirtieth year, the Palm Beach Charity Register is proud to bring you the stories of Palm Beachers doing good and making a difference.

Our cover story, shot by photographer Jerry Rabinowitz, takes a close-up look at the work that’s being done to restore wetlands habitat that has been threatened by development. Turn to page 46 for “Swamped,” a photo essay showcasing Delray Beach’s Wakodahatchee Wetlands.

For every cause there’s an effect. Read up on four local organizations making a difference—from Child Rescue Coalition’s work aiding law enforcement agents in finding and prosecuting online child predators (page 26), to horses healing hearts at Vinceremos (page 28), to Clinics Can Help’s mission of connecting people in need with critical medical supplies (page 24), to introducing underserved students to the value of ecological entrepreneurship at Blend PBC (page 30). Beyond organizations that move the needle on local issues, Samantha Kerrigan’s “Everyday Heroes,” beginning on page 52, profiles six Palm Beach County residents who give their time, talents, and treasures to find new and creative ways to help those in need.

With social season upon us, it’s not only time to start filling your calendar with philanthropic events, but to plan your perfectly Palm Beach wardrobe. Whether you’re a longtime local or a recent transplant, the myriad of event dress code suggestions can stymie even the most sophisticated sartorialist. Don’t miss “A Season of Style” (page 34) for style editor Katherine Lande’s guide to what to wear where—from galas to sporting events and beyond. If you’re in the market for a bauble (or two) to put the finishing touches on your gala look this year, “Tropical Trinkets” (page 40) offers a sparkling selection of gorgeous gems.

And for the section of the Charity Register that locals use year after year as the definitive authority on the area’s most fabulous fundraising festivities, take time to page through our charity listings beginning on page 59. It’s more than just your go-to guide to 165 events about town; it’s also an opportunity to find a passion, serve a purpose, and give back with grace.

This year, as we honor three decades of good works in the Palm Beach Charity Register, I hope you find in these pages an organization that inspires you to attend an event, make a donation, or offer your time and talent to elevate a local cause that speaks to you. And here’s to the next 30 years!
