With us, your philanthropy goes further, faster.
For more than 50 years, the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties has been a proud leader in bringing philanthropists and nonprofit partners together to close the gaps on our area’s chronic and current needs.
“As our area grows, so do its challenges,” says Julie Fisher Cummings, chair of the Community Foundation Board of Directors. “When you give where you live to the causes you care about most — in partnership with the Community Foundation — we make our area stronger for now, and forever.”
Last year alone, our donors helped more than 125 talented local high school seniors attend the college of their dreams through scholarships; improved the mental health of more than 10,500 adults and children through social-emotional learning programs; helped 1,500 teens and adults learn new skills through employment placement programs; and assisted 1,200 displaced neighbors find a place to call home.
“Our approach to philanthropy, coupled with our network of proven nonprofits, makes us a valuable partner in giving for good,” says Danita R. DeHaney, Community Foundation president and CEO. “Our grants and scholarships are designed to improve life for all who live, work and play here so that we all have opportunities to strive — and thrive.”
Last year, nonprofit agencies applied for more grants than the Community Foundation could fund; you can help close the $3 million need gap by contributing “unrestricted” gifts.
This charitable vehicle has gained momentum for good reason — it allows donors to contribute, receive an immediate tax deduction, and recommend grants at any time to any charity.
We specialize in inter-generational education and support, and take on the administrative legwork so that your family can focus on what matters most: making a difference.
Your professional advisor can continue to manage your assets through an IMA and elevate your philanthropy by leveraging our community connections.
Make an impact in perpetuity, while realizing the benefits of giving today, by including the Community Foundation in your long-term estate planning.
Help us double the number of scholarships to support our area’s future leaders and give the gift of education.

This year has been one of milestones. Our flag ship title, Palm Beach Illustrated, celebrates 70 years as the authority of the very best in Palm Beach County. In an industry where magazine lifespan is too often measured in months or years, we are immensely proud of our seven decades of service to this community. The desire to serve is what launched the idea for the Palm Beach Charity Register in 1992.
With many well-organized and focused charitable or ganizations in Palm Beach County, we view the Charity Register’s mission as vital to their outreach and suc cess. In turn, our corporate participation with estab lished and emerging charitable groups provides our organization with direct connections to the people and causes that drive philanthropy in Palm Beach County.
The Community Foundation of Palm Beach and Martin Counties is one of our longtime partners in this effort. We are pleased to have them as the presenting sponsor of this thirtieth edition of the Palm Beach Charity Register. The Community Foundation of Palm Beach and Martin Counties is also celebrating its own milestone this year with 50 years of service to our community. We are grate ful for their support.
For 30 years, the Palm Beach Charity Register has bound together those in the philanthropic community of the Palm Beaches. When there is need, when there is suffering, when a solution needs to be found, our community comes together in an effort to help. Within these pages, you will find many worthy organizations that support the residents of Palm Beach County at all stages of life. We are fortunate to live in a community where the ability to give is great, because there will always be challenges that require our attention.
Let’s be honest: the Palm Beaches are truly like no other place on earth. Sure, we’ve got beautiful weather, accom plished people, storied institutions, and historic architecture on our side. But what sets this slice of palm-studded paradise apart is the philanthropic spirit of our community. Now in its thirtieth year, the Palm Beach Charity Register is proud to bring you the stories of Palm Beachers doing good and making a difference.
Our cover story, shot by photographer Jerry Rabinowitz, takes a close-up look at the work that’s being done to restore wetlands habitat that has been threatened by development. Turn to page 46 for “Swamped,” a photo essay showcasing Delray Beach’s Wakoda hatchee Wetlands.
For every cause there’s an effect. Read up on four local organiza tions making a difference—from Child Rescue Coalition’s work aiding law enforcement agents in finding and prosecuting online child preda tors (page 26), to horses healing hearts at Vinceremos (page 28), to Clinics Can Help’s mission of connecting people in need with critical medical supplies (page 24), to introducing underserved students to the value of ecological entrepreneurship at Blend PBC (page 30). Beyond organizations that move the needle on local issues, Samantha Kerrigan’s “Everyday Heroes,” beginning on page 52, profiles six Palm Beach County residents who give their time, talents, and treasures to find new and creative ways to help those in need.
With social season upon us, it’s not only time to start filling your calendar with philanthropic events, but to plan your perfectly Palm Beach wardrobe. Whether you’re a longtime local or a recent trans plant, the myriad of event dress code suggestions can stymie even the most sophisticated sartorialist. Don’t miss “A Season of Style” (page 34) for style editor Katherine Lande’s guide to what to wear where—from galas to sporting events and beyond. If you’re in the market for a bauble (or two) to put the finishing touches on your gala look this year, “Tropical Trinkets” (page 40) offers a sparkling selection of gorgeous gems.
And for the section of the Charity Register that locals use year after year as the definitive authority on the area’s most fabulous fundraising festivities, take time to page through our charity listings beginning on page 59. It’s more than just your go-to guide to 165 events about town; it’s also an opportunity to find a passion, serve a purpose, and give back with grace.
This year, as we honor three decades of good works in the Palm Beach Charity Register, I hope you find in these pages an organiza tion that inspires you to attend an event, make a donation, or offer your time and talent to elevate a local cause that speaks to you. And here’s to the next 30 years!

Mark your calendars for Monday, March 20, 2023, and join the Richard David Kann Melanoma Foundation for a day of fun at the Breakers in Palm Beach for their 23rd Annual Luncheon and Runway Fashion Show. Focused on the education and promotion of sun safety, this fundraiser has been a much-anticipated event among the South Florida community for many years.
The RDK Melanoma Foundation, their sponsors, and friends all gather in support of one mission: to save lives through education about the prevention and early detection of skin cancer, specifically melanoma. The elegant day at the Breakers will include a luxury silent auction, keynote speakers, delicious luncheon, and a full runway fashion show in the Venetian Ballroom featuring the newest looks from world renowned designer, Monique Lhuillier.
Tampa General Hospital and CEO, John Couris, will be returning as a Diamond Sponsor of the event, eager to expand on sun safety education initiatives launched in the Tampa area last year. Suzanne Niedland will be serving as the Luncheon committee’s Honorary Chairwoman for the second year. Lisa Leder, daughter of last year’s devoted committee chairwoman, Nancy Hart, will join the team as another Diamond Sponsor and serve with her mom as committee co-chairwomen. Marc Leder has also kindly pledged his support as a Diamond Sponsor alongside Sun Capital Partners Foundation.
The highlight of every year’s event is undoubtedly the full production runway fashion show following the sit-down lunch. Monique Lhuillier’s newest line of made to order looks will be on full display for over 450 of RDK’s guests, who will then have an opportunity purchase some of the items with a portion of the proceeds benefitting RDK.
The proceeds of the entire event will be used to continue several of the Foundation’s initiatives to prevent skin cancer, particularly melanoma. One of their main programs includes the strategic placement of public sunscreen dispensers across the nation’s parks, schools, beaches, and outdoor areas to provide protection from the harmful UV rays of the sun. RDK is also focused on growing its network of Students Against Melanoma (SAM Clubs) around high schools and colleges in the state of Florida and the rest of the United States and, eventually, world. These students advocate the sun safety and preventive education RDK provides with their respective families and communities to save lives.

All Zoe wanted for her sixth birthday was to go to the beach—but the simple request was almost impossible for her. She would need a beach wheelchair, which would cost more than $1,000 to rent for a single afternoon.
Enter Clinics Can Help, a West Palm Beach–based nonprofit that gets medical equipment to those in need. They secured a beach wheelchair for Zoe, enabling her to enjoy a day with the sand on her toes and the waves rushing across her feet.
“It was amazing; she had such a good time,” says Zoe’s mother, Lynn Vera. “It’s an organization that really, really just cares about the recipients. They go above and beyond.”
Founded in 2011, Clinics Can Help has provided more than $12 million worth of medical equipment to people in Palm Beach County and elsewhere. The nonprofit assists more than 3,200 people per year, and they don’t turn anyone away.
“Getting the medical equipment is very easy,” says Owen O’Neill, the organization’s founder and CEO. “I bet if you think about it, you’ve probably
seen a wheelchair or a walker or a nebulizer in the back of a friend’s house. People have them all over the place, and [they often] want to donate them to someone who can actually use them.”
As a hospital nurse, O’Neill witnessed patients reinjuring themselves when they couldn’t afford medical equipment like bed rails, walkers, or wheelchairs. When he transitioned to hospice work, he saw the opposite end of the spectrum— a surplus of equipment left over after patients died and families eager to donate it.
In 2002, he collected the items to sanitize, inspect, and redistribute, starting with a walker and a wheelchair that he transported in the back of his truck. He juggled full-time work with his newfound passion. In 2007 he opened an office. He hired part-time staff in 2010 and opened fulltime in 2011.
“If you give someone a wheelchair they can get out of bed, which means they can go back to
work, school, or church,” O’Neill explains.
That was the case for Zoe, who has cerebral palsy. When Vera got custody of her as a toddler, she didn’t know where to start (or even what questions to ask). She was referred to Clinics Can Help, who provided her with equipment including an adaptive bicycle that helps work Zoe’s leg muscles, an activity chair so she can sit at the dinner table or work at a sewing machine, and a wheelchair for day-to-day activities.
O’Neill estimates that Clinics Can Help will be assisting 10,000 people per year by 2030. “I love what I do,” O’Neill says. “We are truly making a difference in people’s lives in a way that very few others are or can.” (clinicscanhelp.org) «

One local nonprofit is fighting the fire of online child pornography with a unique fire of its own: an online database that gives law enforcement a way to track and apprehend predators who download and trade child sexual abuse materials. The technology—known as CRC Technology— is the brainchild of Boca Raton’s Child Rescue Coalition, Inc. (CRC), which provides access to the system free of charge to law enforcement organizations worldwide.
“People think the majority of child sexual abuse materials is traded on websites, but it’s actually through the peer-to-peer and sharingstyle networks,” explains CRC founder and CEO Carly Yoost. “Predators have used the argument that we’ve illegally hacked into their database or private networks on their computers, but it’s been ruled 100 percent in our favor. These are public forums on the internet. They feel they are doing this crime anonymously, but it’s in public view.”
Yoost’s father, Hank Asher, created the technology in 2009. When Asher passed away in 2013, Yoost and her sister felt compelled to continue to offer it as a key tool in the fight against child pornography. They founded CRC as a nonprofit in 2014. “We understood its power to protect children from sexual predators,” says Yoost.
The database is housed in nine anonymous networks, gathering and monitoring approximately 72 million global IP addresses that are trading and downloading illicit materials. Once logged into the CRC Technology system, law enforcement officers can pull local data to create a ranked list of the top offenders, gather records of criminal activity, and note the name of each internet service provider. Armed with this critical data, officers can subpoena the internet provider to acquire the name and address of any alleged predators.
“With this information, detectives can save valuable time and resources during their investigations and focus on taking suspected offenders
off the streets,” says Nicholas Masters, a detective with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. “It assists detectives with identifying offenders who are actively distributing child sexual abuse material and provides the data in a manner that is easily analyzed and utilized in proactive investigations.”
To date, CRC Technology has led to the arrest of more than 13,800 child predators and helped rescue 3,175 children in 97 countries and all 50 states. In 2021, 336 officers from the United States, the United Kingdom, and South America received training in the technology.
“This has been so rewarding, but we can’t do this alone,” says Yoost. “It can’t just be a partnership with law enforcement. There should be regulations on the internet where companies like Facebook, Instagram, or others are mandated and regulated to not allow this kind of material to be traded. We want to work with online platforms to ban this content all together.” (childrescuecoalition.org) «
Boca Raton nonprofit Child Rescue Coalition is a leader in the fight against online child pornographyCarly Yoost’s Child Rescue Coalition is on a mission to rescue children from sexual abuse by offering free technology to help law enforcement track, arrest, and prosecute predators.

Debbie Lindstrom and Bob SheetzIt was 1982 when Ruth Menor started doing equine therapy in a friend’s backyard with her own horse. “Horses have always helped me deal with adversity in my life,” says Menor. “I wanted to share that with others in need.”
Today, that backyard endeavor has blossomed into Vinceremos, a therapeutic riding facility located in Loxahatchee Groves, boasting 24 horses on 15 acres of land. Marking 40 years of transforming lives with horses, the center offers equine therapy and hippotherapy to serve children and adults with cognitive, physical, emotional, and psychological disabilities. It’s also a premier accredited center that has trained two USA Special Olympic athletes who have won gold, silver, and bronze medals in their respective sports.
With services like adaptive horseback riding, adaptive carriage driving, hippotherapy, equineassisted learning and education, equine-assisted psychotherapy, and pre-employment training, Vinceremos helps its students build confidence, selfesteem, social skills, and life skills. “We draw similarities and give tools that help [individuals] make better choices [and lead] a more fulfilled life,” says Susan Guinan, Vinceremos’ executive director.
Hippotherapy programs help children as young as 3 years old with issues related to traumatic brain injuries or strokes. The movement of the horse causes a rocking of the torso, which helps students develop their core muscles.
When it comes to psychotherapy, Guinan says observing horses at rest and play can provide a way for people in crisis to better express their emotions. “When you come to the farm and we put three horses in an area, maybe two are boxing, and that can look like either fighting or playing,” she explains. “The way you describe it says how someone sees the situation. If the third horse is off standing by themself and we ask, ‘What is that horse feeling?’ They may answer, ‘Afraid,’ or ‘They just want some quiet time to themself.’ The description is their experience in life. But we are talking about the horses and not them, which is a much easier conversation for them to have.”
In today’s trying post-quarantine climate, Vin-
ceremos has recently expanded its program to include first responders, high schoolers, and those suffering from depression and anxiety.
Both Menor and Guinan say it’s all worth it when you see the progress students like Madyson make on a daily basis. “My little girl, who was afraid of nearly everything, is now a self-assured young lady, who is tacking and untacking her horse independently, vaulting with Ms. Ruth, and willing to take risks,” says Madyson’s mother. “Vinceremos gave Mady joy, purpose, and a tribe of people she calls her own. Mady wants to help others overcome their fears and disabilities through therapeutic riding. It literally changed the trajectory of her life.” (vinceremos.org) «
HORSES ARE AT THE HEART OF HEALING AT VINCEREMOSVinceremos’ equine therapy programs serve people with physical, cognitive, emotional, and psychological disabilities.
Blend PBC is on a mission—or make that two. First, says executive director Trinnette Morris, the organization works to nurture minority-owned food-based vendors by fostering community connections, putting talented entrepreneurs and their culinary creations in front of large local businesses. “It’s really as simple as introducing small business to big business,” Morris explains.
She says the conversation started with the Palm Beach County Convention Center. “They have their own in-house food and beverage teams. However, a lot of times when meeting planners from other states or countries come to the convention center to plan an event, they’re looking for a local taste. Instead of their teams trying to be a master of everything culinary-wise, we can offer up partnerships with our minority-owned businesses like Foster’s Barbeque, Trindy Gourmet, or Eat ‘n’ Cake.”
Case in point? Riviera Beach’s Smoothie Me Please was recently selected to provide smoothies for the Blockwork’s Permissionless cryptocur-
rency conference in West Palm Beach.
But Blend PBC is also tapping into the future of the community with its agricultural elementary school program. Morris says the group is bringing microgreen harvesting—from pea shoots to arugula to red cabbage—to area schools in underserved communities, with an aim to educate students about an ecosystem of economic sustainability in a hands-on (and delicious) way.
The program started last year at Seminole Trails Elementary School and Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School, both in West Palm Beach. This year, the program has expanded to 10 schools, adding middle schools to the mix as well.
“The students make observations every day in a microgreen journal,” says Morris. “Last week we grew in soil. This week we grew in bamboo mats. Last week we grew with natural light. This week we grew with grow lights. So they see the difference in ways of growing something.”
Then comes the fun part: harvesting and sam-
pling in recipes for smoothies, pizzas, and salads. Student agriculturists can also sell the microgreens they’ve grown and harvested to local restaurants. And some of their wares are ending up on seriously swank plates; this past June, studentgrown microgreens were used in Blend PBC chefs’ masterpieces at the Mayor’s Ball.
“We [were] thrilled for the opportunity to showcase the culinary delights of Blend PBC at the Mayor’s Ball and showcase our agricultural elementary school program,” says Morris.
“Every dish tells a story,” she adds, “and we hope that ours embody the essence of community education and betterment. Nothing tastes sweeter than helping Black and brown communities through the social and emotional learning that is taught through gardening.” (blendpbc.org) «

For the most part, Floridians kept their charitable dollars close to home in 2021, with 65 percent of their donations remaining in the state, according to a study by Florida Nonprofit Alliance, the Jessie Ball duPont Fund, and the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. A front-row seat to the hardships resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic might have had something to do with that, says Leah McDermott, program manager at Florida Nonprofit Alliance.
“I do think the compassion by donors and the drive toward informal and in-kind giving has to do with being home during the pandemic and seeing what went on in the community,” McDermott says. Nationally, there was a spike in overall charitable giving in 2020, when the country was deep into the pandemic, she notes. Although donations dropped again in 2021 to below 2020 levels, they were still higher than in 2019.
Going forward, there is early evidence that donors may be returning to their prepandemic giving patterns, moving away from a hyper-local focus, says Jonathan Bergdoll, applied statistician for IUPUI Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. But for now, giving locally is still a common thread in Florida. “In many ways, the pandemic helped highlight or exacerbate the need that was already there, so donors could react to this by continuing to give more locally than previously.”
Moved by poverty and income inequality, more than eight in ten Floridians report that they were driven to give by compassion to ward people in need, according to the study. The top issues after poverty were health, climate change and environment, animal rights, and disaster relief.
In a possible peek into the future of giving, the report also notes that donors under the age of 40 were less likely to make giving decisions based on tax deductions and more likely to give informally, by donating food, volunteering at shelters, or putting cash directly into the
hands of those in need. The high-net-worth and those over 65 are more likely to give for mally, to established institutions.
“Historically, people become more formal with their giving as they age; however, there are things working against that trend now,” says Bergdoll. “Under the current tax code, only about one in nine households is eligible to deduct their charitable contributions, so most people will never have a tax incentive to give their money to a formal charitable organization as compared to, say, a friend in need or a political party.”
The study brings to light the fact that formal giving is not the only way to help people, says McDermott. “We want to get a better idea of what informal giving looks like. It’s always been around, but over the past 10 years, technology that allows platforms like GoFundMe have made it even easier to give.”
There’s also a certain mistrust of large organizations, and McDermott says she’s counseling nonprofits to communicate better.
“It brings to light that we have more work to do to overcome misconceptions about how money is spent. We find that by talking clearly about expenses and being more open results in a positive response from the public. They understand that the electric bill has to be paid to keep the organization running because they deal with that kind of thing in their own lives.”
“
—Jonathan Bergdoll, applied statistician for IUPUI Lilly Family School of Philanthropy
IN MANY WAYS, THE PANDEMIC HELPED HIGHLIGHT OR EXACER BATE THE NEED THAT WAS ALREADY THERE, SO DONORS COULD REACT TO THIS BY CONTINUING TO GIVE MORE LOCALLY THAN PREVIOUSLY.”

Delray Beach’s Wakodahatchee Wetlands is a case study in the healing power of water
Wakodahatchee: It’s a word from the Seminole language meaning “created waters.” That’s because in 1996, Palm Beach County’s Water Utilities Department did just that: create a swamp on 50 acres of unused land as a way to treat wastewater for eventual use in agriculture and irrigation. At the time, the project was hailed as a novel alternative to industrial modern sewage treatment—but it’s a process as old as the Everglades themselves.
Approximately 2 million gallons of treated waste water flows through the Wakodahatchee Wetlands daily. The swampy waters act as a percolation pond, returning billions of gallons of fresh water back into the local water table over time. They also support ever growing numbers of birds, alligators, turtles, fish, and
other wildlife—not to mention in sects and native flora—that thrive in and around the nutrient-rich waters.
Photographer Jerry Rabinowitz first started photographing the Wakodahatchee in 2015. “I had been there before but not really to photograph,” he recalls. “I lived close to there at the time, and we started to walk there for exercise. Being a photographer, I brought my camera. I was not a wildlife shooter, but more of a nature guy.”
Over time, Rabinowitz returned to the wetlands and its threequarter-mile boardwalk with his cameras and lenses to capture a variety of vignettes—open-water ponds, emergent marshes, shallow shelves, grassy islands, and tree canopies among them. “As I started to document there, I began to realize
that there was something special. It became an intimate experience. I kept going back because the place changed by the time of day, season, and weather. Each time was a new experience,” he explains, describing what he calls a “hidden Eden that exists on the other side of a suburban fence.”
“As I walked and photographed, I discovered the layering of the wetlands becoming more distinct,” he adds. “A cycle of life existing on the surface, in the air, and beneath
the purifying waters.”
Rabinowitz has collected his images into a book, aptly titled Created Waters. His black-and-white photographic studies celebrate the successful merger of sustainability and nature. “Wakodahatchee restores some of what we have lost through development,” he says. “It is the beauty, steeped in underlying purpose, that causes me to journey, reflect, photograph, and embrace this small marvel in my city of Delray Beach.” «

After sleeping on the streets as a teen, Francky Pierre-Paul uses his second chance to care for neighbors in need
Kicked out of his house at the age of 16, Francky Pierre-Paul found himself couch surfing and sleeping on park benches. “It was demoralizing,” he recalls. “I hated it, and I hated myself.”
He says it was like having two identities: At
night, he was homeless and alone with nowhere to turn. But during the day, he was at school and surrounded by friends—masking his feelings of depression and loneliness.
“That’s why I’m so big on changing the perspective of homelessness and how people view those who are struggling,” Pierre-Paul says.
Now, as an advocate, Pierre-Paul helps the more than 1,500 people experiencing homelessness in Palm Beach County. He often finds himself back in those same parks he once called home, passing out food and personal care items to the people living there.
“My goal is to figure out why they are out here
so I can share that story with the community and try to get them help,” he says.
His nonprofit, A Different Shade of Love, holds events around Palm Beach County, providing clothes, shoes, haircuts, and showers. It’s the small things, Pierre-Paul says, that help people who are experiencing homelessness feel like they are a part of the life going on around them.
“What I’ve realized about our homeless neighbors on the street is that they’re voiceless, and that’s because of us in the community,” PierrePaul admits. “We tell them, ‘You’re not allowed to do this, or you’re not allowed to do that.’”
It’s what he was told (and how he lived) for
too many years. But things are different for Pierre-Paul now, and he credits the bulk of his success to his wife. “I feel like she’s my angel on Earth because she’s more than a wife to me— she’s also a counselor, a best friend, a pat on the back, and a smile when I need it.”
The couple’s two young children also motivate Pierre-Paul to continue his mission. “I’m able to teach them the values of life and the importance of waking up and inhaling and exhaling and appreciating each moment,” he says.
His journey has been brutal at times. But Pierre-Paul says that through it all, he’s found his purpose—and he’s not taking his second chance for granted.
“If I can change one soul before I leave this Earth,” he says, “then I feel like my job here while I’m just passing by is not null and void.”

How teenager Jake Zur used his diabetes diagnosis to build an app that’s helping patients everywhere
When then-17-year-old Jake Zur was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in November 2020, something as simple as a Sunday morning doughnut stopped being a sweet treat and instead became something to be charted and analyzed. “I was managing my sugars on spreadsheets and making huge lists of everything I ate,” he recalls. “It just took way too long.”
Zur searched for a simpler solution, but none of the diabetes management tools he tried did the trick. So, the senior at The Benjamin School in Palm Beach Gardens decided to build his own app called SweetSpot–The Diabetes Manager.
Mixing technology with his diagnosis was a no-brainer for Zur, who plans to major in computer science in college and has spent a summer as a programming data analysis intern at Jupiter’s Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience. It took him about four months to develop SweetSpot, but he used his tech know-how—plus some medical research, YouTube videos, and family support—to bring the app to life.
Available for free on the Apple App Store, SweetSpot offers a trio of functions: a carb calculator, a glucose log, and a meal planner.
Zur is hopeful the app will help other people with diabetes and says that getting it into the hands of those who really need it has been the sweetest part of the process. “I just want to get it out to [as many] people as possible,” he adds. “I’m always updating the app, trying to make it the best for users. The fact that I can possibly help other people learn to manage their diabetes with this app is great.”
He hopes others who are struggling with a diabetes diagnosis will be empowered to manage their blood sugars and to understand that it’s a learning process that takes practice. Sometimes they’ll be high and sometimes they’ll be low, but eventually, Zur says, they’ll find their sweet spot.
South Florida transplant Diane Buhler is healing her heart and home—one bucket of trash at a time
Diane Buhler had traveled from New York to South Florida on diving trips for decades, using the underwater world to escape the crush of the concrete jungle. But after losing friends during the September 11, 2001 attacks and supporting relief efforts at Ground Zero, she left Wall Street for West Palm Beach. “I needed to heal, and I needed to be by the ocean,” she says. “That’s my happy place.”
It wasn’t until Buhler became a full-time resident that she realized her happy place needed healing, too. “I found an ocean that needed me and animals that needed help because of the inundation of plastics and trash,” she says.
Buhler started organizing monthly beach cleanups with the help of the Solid Waste Authority, but she soon learned that once-amonth sessions weren’t enough to keep up with the amount of waste washing ashore. “We
would leave a beach after one of those cleanups and the trash was still coming in with the winds,” she recalls. “I realized then and there I needed to do more.”
Buhler officially founded her nonprofit, Friends of Palm Beach, in 2014 with the mission of cleaning our beaches. But her organization does more than that; it’s also a transitional work program that recruits clients from The Lord’s Place and Vita Nova, local outreach agencies that help the homeless and aged-out foster children land on their feet. “This is a safe space,” she says. “It’s hard work, and if you’re willing to show up and do the job, then I’ll keep you.”
Now her small but dedicated crew cleans
seven-and-a-half miles of Palm Beach’s coastline five days a week and also works to educate the community about the impacts of pollution. On average, Buhler and her crew remove 750 pounds of trash each week—the equivalent of 1,600 pieces of trash per day—and 80 percent of that trash is nonbiodegradable plastic. To date, Buhler says she and her crew have removed more than 230,000 pounds of trash from Palm Beach’s shores.
“I had no idea the amount we were going to collect,” she admits. “I knew I was going to make a dent, but it’s huge what we’re able to get. Unfortunately, it’s still only a small percentage of what is out there.”
What’s most rewarding, Buhler says, is seeing her crew making a difference every day. “They’re gaining a respect and an education about the environment and the community they live in and they’re taking that back home and buying differently and cleaning up their world. We all need to lend a hand, even if it’s something as small as picking up one piece of trash a day or five pieces a day—it all makes a difference.”

Whether she’s working at the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach or brainstorming ideas for her next novel, Sophie Meridien knows the power of story—and its ability to transport young minds. “I think it goes back to being in school and having a really awesome English teacher or a really awesome librarian and me wanting to be that for these kids,” she says. “I want to be a helpful adult in their life who they can talk to—not just about books but also about regular life stuff.”
Meridien has been a librarian at the Mandel Public Library for four years, helping teens reach their academic and social potential. During the school year, she runs the library’s teen
homework center, where kids can come for free homework help, a healthy snack, or a friendly face. “Sometimes the kids don’t even have homework,” she admits. “They just need a safe place to hang out before their parents get home.”
Her efforts have not gone unnoticed: In 2021, Meridien was recognized as Florida’s Most Outstanding New Librarian of the Year by the Florida Library Association. “There were quite a few awards being handed out, and I remember thinking, ‘All these librarians are super incredible!’ To be a part of that was really awesome.”
But Meridien’s impact reaches far beyond
the library’s bookshelves. She runs a monthly book club at the Pace Center for Girls, an alternative school for teenage girls in Palm Beach County. She has also coordinated author visits at a local juvenile detention center. “We’re trying to bring the library to teens who can’t make it to the library,” she says. “It’s one of the best parts of the job.”
nated author visits at a local juvenile detention the one of the best parts of the job.”
Meridien is on a mission to provide young readers with equal access to books—especially those that feature characters they can relate to. “Most of my teens come from our community and they don’t necessarily have a lot of books [with characters who] look like them,” she says. “I always want to make sure I’m buying the best books for them.”
She’s writing the best books for them, too: Meridien’s debut novel, The Witchery, was released in late July. “In the fantasy realm, for me growing up, I couldn’t find a lot of magical heroines who looked like me. That’s part of the reason I wrote this book.”
Meridien hopes the world of fantasy The Witchery offers can be an enjoyable escape for teenagers from all corners of the community. And when they step back into the Mandel Public Library, she’ll be there to help them continue writing their own stories.

Bikes are a way for “Jack the Bike Man” Hairston to get lives (and smiles) rolling again
Do you remember your first bicycle? That’s the question Jack Hairston asks just about every person he meets—and he says the answer is usually a resounding ‘yes!’
“I don’t think they remember their first toothbrush or first pair of shoes or first peanut butter sandwich,” Hairston says. “But they remember their first bicycle.”
Better known as “Jack the Bike Man,” Hairston has been a pillar in the West Palm Beach community for more than 20 years. His nonprofit gives away bikes to kids in need—and the holidays are his busiest time of the year. “We give away over 2,000 bikes at our Christmas party every year,” he says of his operation’s annual collection drive and repair efforts that could give Santa’s workshop a run for its money.
Hairston partners with other local charities to identify families that can benefit most from a new set of wheels. On the day of the party, hundreds of volunteers descend on the bike shop to help make sure each kid rides off on a bike
tailored to him or her. “A bunch of elves are down in the loading dock area, and they’re adjusting seats and whatever needs to be done so the bike is perfect for the child,” Hairston explains.
Hairston says it all started one day in 1999 when he was sitting on his front porch, watching a young man falling off his bike. He realized the kid’s brakes weren’t working. “I knew how to do that, and so I fi xed his brakes and told him to get out of here,” he recalls.
But there was no pumping the brakes on what would happen from that day forward. Word travels fast—especially among the kids in Hairston’s neighborhood, who continued to show up on his porch asking him to fi x their bikes. “It was an accident,” he admits. “I didn’t plan on this happening—I was retired and enjoying doing nothing.”
But he says he wouldn’t change a thing. These days, he enjoys educating kids on bicycle safety through his charity’s various programs. Recently, Jack the Bike Man moved his operations into a bigger workshop and programming space, thanks to a lead gift of $1.5 million from the Mary Alice Fortin Foundation.
Hairston says his organization will continue helping those who need it most—one bicycle at a time. “I’ve never seen anything as powerful as a kid’s smile when they get their first bicycle,” he says. And at 80 years old, it’s those smiles that keep Hairston’s wheels turning.

Arrested for drug trafficking at the age of 17, Allie Severino faced a possible prison sentence of 120 years. She thought her life was over. “I even wanted to go to prison because I was convinced I couldn’t succeed on probation,” she says.
But Severino got a lucky break when the judge assigned to her case decided not to give up on her. “He saw something in me that I didn’t even see in myself at the time,” she says. “It’s people like him, who gave me a second chance, who allow me to live the life I live today.”
More than a decade later, Severino is sober and thriving in her new role as a homeless outreach
specialist for the City of West Palm Beach. “They didn’t look at my past, they looked at what I was doing today and the woman I’ve become,” she says of her employer. “They believed in me and my ability to be an asset to the city.”
Severino admits the shift from her old life to her new one wasn’t easy; it took some time to turn things around (even after that fateful court appearance). “I was living on the street until I got my bed at the drug abuse foundation,” she recalls. “When I got there, I was like, ‘I don’t want to be here at all.’”
But Severino stuck it out, spending six months in rehab. She realizes now that her struggle was a
key part of her growth. “If I didn’t struggle even in recovery like every other young person does, I wouldn’t have that knowledge to help others,” she says.
Today, Severino uses her own experiences to offer hope to people experiencing addiction and homelessness in West Palm Beach. “I know they feel like they can talk to me and not feel like I’m looking at them in a different way, because I’m not. I simply just want to help.”
Severino seeks to build trust first. It’s the best way, she says, to truly assess the specific needs of each individual and get them connected to the right services. “What we do for them is navigate a very complicated system, whether that’s to help them get food stamps or disability or shelter placement,” she explains.
She says it’s the “boots on the ground” effort on West Palm Beach’s streets and in its parks that makes a difference. “We’re doing that hard work to make sure these amazing people can get to a point where they are self-sufficient and able to live a happy life that they’re proud of,” she says.
Now—far from her life being over—Severino is on a positive path, both personally and professionally. She’s preparing to start social work courses at Florida Atlantic University to further enable her to help locals in need. “I just want to keep growing and doing a good job,” she says. “I know that if I’m able to continue to do well, then other people will know they can do it too.”

Lewis Miller knows how to make things bloom. It was just a few years ago that the event designer and visionary florist began punctuating New York City with pre-dawn installations of flowers. Known as Flower Flashes, the exuberant arrangements adorned street signs, statues, and even trash cans. Call them living art installations or a gift to a city amid the COVID crisis, but either way, they quickly became a beloved Instagram sensation (and eventually a book, published in 2021).
flowers. Known as Flower
Like so many of his clients, Miller is now a part-time Palm Beacher—and his new neighbors eagerly awaited his first southern installment. This time there were no coverof-darkness guerilla tactics (this is Palm Beach, after all). In early 2022, Miller and his team were commissioned to give the fountain in Palm Beach’s Earl E.T. Smith Park the Flower Flash treatment to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach’s Dinner Dance. Proceeds from the storied annual event support the foundation’s efforts to protect and celebrate the Town of Palm Beach’s architectural and cultural heritage and its unique scenic quality. Through advocacy initiatives, educational programs, architectural resources, and cultural events, the foundation works to encourage the community to learn about and save the historic sites that make Palm Beach special.
Now that’s some serious flower power. (palmbeach preservation.org) «
