OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS ast year around this time, at a holiday party in New York, billionaire investor and philanthropist Ronald O. Perelman surprised attendees by announcing donations of $25,000 apiece to several small charitable organizations. The surprise wasn’t in the amount; it was in the direction. Perelman—the country’s twenty-sixth largest donor, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, having given $63.5 million to worthy causes in 2008—usually makes headlines for large contributions to large organizations.

His sentiment was obvious: The big contributions would continue, he promised, but there are many opportunities to make an impact through a greater number of smaller contributions to smaller organizations, where the cash infusion will have proportionately greater effect.

The uncertain economy has affected everyone to some degree, but charities really have felt the pinch, especially on the local level. If you’ve looked at the social calendar for the next several months, you’ve probably noticed some superficial evidence—the charity gala season isn’t quite as busy as it was in past years. Many nonprofits are scaling back to focus on the core components of their operations, and some formal affairs have been deemed “not essential.”

To be sure, galas are not the reason why charitable organizations exist, but they are useful—and, yes, enjoyable—ways to generate contributions and raise awareness for a good cause. Right now, however, these organizations are facing bigger challenges than deciding themes and menus.

And this is where opportunity lies for each of us.

Our personal circumstances permit us to support worthy causes, and, believe me, there are plenty of them out there. And while it’s entirely possible that the prevailing conditions may preclude grand gestures right now, it is an excellent time to take a page from Perelman’s handbook and find a few local organizations that will most benefit from your direct assistance—whether it’s through your financial means, your leadership talents, your business connections, or your time.

If you don’t yet have a favorite cause, let me direct your attention to the annual Naples Charity Register, from the editors of this magazine. It is available this month on select newsstands or through our website (naplesillustrated.com), and it offers excellent insight into the local organizations that are working to improve the community.

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: It is profoundly rewarding to see the direct effects of one’s own generosity, and that may be more true today than ever before.

WELL SEASONED isitors to Florida sometimes bemoan what appears to be a lack of seasons, but those of us who have been here for a while know how to savor the changes, from the subtle shifts in weather and light to the more dramatic ramping up of the social, charitable and cultural calendar.

We note some of the season’s cultural highlights on page 72, and charitable events in the annual Naples Charity Register, which we also publish this month. Things have picked up so much, we’ve taken our valuable and much-consulted Charity Register calendar to our website (naplesillustrated.com) so that we can add and update events throughout the year. We also received a record number of charities submitting events, so we have included additional charity information online as well.

One of the big events in November is the Naples Botanical Garden’s Hats in the Garden. This year, it is one of many events in a weeklong celebration of the opening of the first phase of the garden (page 66). For the momentous occasion, avid gardener and fashion icon Oscar de la Renta will make a rare personal experience at the Hats event as the featured designer (page 58).

During the summer we give our hard-working advisory board (page 12) some time off, but we resume meeting this month. Through the years, our board has kept us plugged into the community, bringing business and social knowledge to our planning. We’ve had 80 distinguished members of the community serving on our board in the past 10 years. For a complete list, visit our website.

That impressive list brings up an important point to keep in mind in the upcoming charity season: We get by with a lot of help from our friends.

Neal Conan, award-winning host of NPR’s Talk of the Nation, has reported from New York, Washington and London, and following the attacks on September 11, 2001, he anchored NPR’s live coverage. He has served as editor and producer of NPR’s All Things Considered.

He comes to Southwest Florida November 18 and 19, appearing on WGCU’s Gulf Coast Live! call-in show, and at a dinner hosted by WGCU in Naples. —Kat Smith ■ How did you feel covering September 11?

I’d been a correspondent, and covered wars in the Middle East. I’d been a Pentagon correspondent; I’d covered State Department; I’d been London correspondent. I’d been at the White House briefly. ... It was something in an odd sort of way I’d prepared my whole life to do; on the other hand, it was something nobody was prepared to do. It was one of the most awful moments in anybody’s life. The privilege was to be able to share that with so many people from so many parts of the country who called in [with their] experiences.

■ How has technology positively affected reporting?

The degree to which citizens can participate in coverage has changed it for the better, because there are many more [lie] detectors out there. ... I think there are some negative aspects too; some things that are not necessarily facts get published, and the way the Web works, those things never quite go away. There’s some parts we have to work out, but hey, if it’s not a challenge, what’s the fun in that?

■ What’s new on your horizon?

A new project with Ensemble Galilei. We tour two shows, one called Universe of Dreams, and the other called First Person ©2002 NPR, BY ANTONY NAGELMANN

SAVING THE DAY Seventeen-year-old Aubrey Carr currently reigns as the 2009 Miss Teen Earth Southwest Florida and became Miss United States Teen Water as a runner up at Miss Teen Earth United States pageant in Nevada in July.

As a titleholder, the Naples High School senior seeks to educate the public on how to be environmentally friendly, and develops and implements environmental projects in the community. She started a beach cleanup program at Naples High and is presently working to install rainwater catchers that will provide water for the school’s irrigation system, solar heating panels for the showers, and solar lighting for the sports stadiums. Carr is all about staying on C.O.U.R.S.E.—Conserve Output By Recycling, Reusing and Unplugging Everyday. —Christina Wells

HANGING OUT Three years ago, 17-year-old Community School of Naples senior Parker Borelli launched his own custom cabinetry and closet-design business. He organizes closets in some of Naples premier communities, including Port Royal, The Estuary and Pelican Bay. Borelli recently finished a $50,000 job in a $6.3 million Estuary estate. He is also a philanthropist. Last May, he chaired a fashion show featuring designer Richie Rich at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club. His classmates modeled and the event raised $10,000 for Cancer Alliance of Naples. The cause is close to Borelli’s heart; his mother is a cancer survivor. Another show to benefit the Community School was held at Waterside Shops in October. Next up for the young entrepreneur: college in the Northeast, preferably in Boston or New York. —C.W.

BEST DRESSED Community School of Naples senior Emily Payne channeled a love of fashion into a helping hand. The 17-year-old started a Naples Chapter of Becca’s Closet, a charity initiative that collects previously owned prom dresses and distributes them to girls who can’t afford the cost of a formal gown. Her 2009 efforts resulted in dresses for girls at Barron Collier and Palmetto Ridge high schools. Next year, she’ll partner with Prom Aid, which distributes formal wear to both girls and boys, with hopes of expanding her outreach. “Prom is a big deal and it costs a lot of money,” she says. “I want to help girls who can’t afford to participate in this high-school rite of passage.” —C.W.

The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort offers incomparable views—and experiences.

Some places get it right. They make you wonder why others with comparable resources and equally stunning settings don’t. The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort, 26 miles up the coast from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, gets it right, and then some.

It isn’t a mystery why, either. Hill Glazier Architects took a secluded peninsula overlooking the Bay of Banderas and sprinkled it with 32 handsome casitas. The designers carved pathways through manicured gardens gushing with bougainvillea leading up to three spectacular infinity pools bordered by plush chaises and private whitecurtained cabanas and beyond, to lawns edging a broad, sandy beach. Then they raised long colonnades overhung with wooden beams to create dramatic exterior spaces. Surely the St. Regis Punta Mita was designed with photographers in mind; everywhere the eye looks, there is a picture.

Spontaneous smiles and offers of assistance are genuine here. As for creature comforts, the 120 guest rooms and suites, with sinfully comfortable beds, capacious balconies, and marble bathrooms with inand outdoor showers, soon feel like second homes. Personal butlers assigned to each guest are unobtrusive but equipped to fulfill any desire. And celebrities need not worry. “All our guests treat each other with respect,” says Jean-Pierre Sorin, the resort’s general manager.

An extraordinary indulgence is the threebedroom Presidential Suite, whose private pool and Jacuzzi are all that separates its huge terrace from the bay. Colors are calm, punctuated by fresh floral displays. Music is wired throughout, and chef service is provided in a fully equipped kitchen.

Most guests, however, venture to the resort’s restaurants, where there is something for everyone. For casual din-

ing, Las Marietas serves authentic Mexican dishes, like free-range chicken mole or a fresh fish ceviche. At the Sea Breeze Beach Club, a California-style bistro, try the whole boneless snapper wrapped in a corn leaf infused in aged tequila and cooked in a sea-salt crust.

The signature restaurant is Carolina, with a menu that features a variety of dishes, from the freshest fish to the finest cuts of meat. The spice-roasted Caribbean Lobster, served with a fennel mousseline enhanced by a touch of Papantla vanilla and a coriander vinaigrette dances across the palate. Each of the three gourmet restaurants is special in its own right: One sits under suspended thatched roofs, completely open to caressing zephyrs and twinkling stars. A night spent lingering over fine cuisine in a grove of softly lit palms is a precious experience.

During the day, if lazing beside your private pool is not what you are in the mood for,

you might prefer to play one of the Jack Nicklaus signature golf courses, or perhaps cruise to the tiny Las Marietas Islands.

“Everyone thinks you have to go to the Galapagos to see the blue-footed booby,” says guide Jose Moreno. He points to a volcanic rock on which stands a dignified seabird with bright blue, slightly undignified feet.

After snorkeling, beaching and guacamolesnacking, Moreno regales with tales of the bay’s riches: porpoises, marlins, manta rays, sea turtles, humpback whales, 85 species of birds, 115 of fish. “There are pumas, jaguars and wild boars,” he says, pointing to mountains above the bay. “We drive to a dense tropical forest and take nature walks.”

In life, there is nothing quite so decadent as being greeted at an airport by a man in a Rolls-Royce—especially if the Rolls-Royce is a $400,000 midnight blue Phantom Coupé.

Whereas the big four-door Phantom sedan may hint at corporate transportation, the two-door Coupé gently whispers, “This is mine, all mine.”

As you stroll nonchalantly toward this rolling piece of sculpture parked curbside, crowds parting like Moses commanding the Red Sea, it’s impossible not to beam a Julia Roberts-like grin at your sheer good fortune. As the slogan says, “Life is good.”

And it gets even better. We’re gently wafting away from San Francisco International, heading south to the Monterey Peninsula, the setting for the fifty-ninth Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the world’s greatest classic car show, and we’re here to experience it RollsRoyce style.

Pebble, as it’s affectionately known, is the Woodstock for the world’s wealthy car lovers. For one week in August, thousands of auto aficionados flock to this nor-

mally sleepy golfing mecca to eat, drink and sleep cars.

In addition to the main Sunday Concours on the hallowed turf of the eighteenth fairway outside The Lodge at Pebble Beach, there are at least four key old-car auctions, old-car racing at the nearby Laguna Seca track, old-car parades, and a whole lot of salivating over old cars.

Our weekend kicks off with the ever-so-elegant “The Quail, A Motorsport Gathering” on Friday at the Quail Lodge Resort & Golf Club. Pay your $400 entry and you too can mingle among more than 70 of the most extraordinary automobiles to ever roll on four wheels. The entry fee includes a first-rate gourmet lunch, copious quantities of fine Champagne and desserts to die for.

Over at the Rolls-Royce enclosure, the new EX200 concept is getting its first North American airing. While they call it a concept, this actually is the all-new Ghost sedan that goes on sale next spring as Rolls’ brand new $245,000 entry model.

of the price. Power comes from a 6.6-liter, 563-horsepower V12 that will deliver acceleration akin to a Tomahawk missile.

“This is more a car for the business suit than a tuxedo,” explains the always dapper, immaculately coiffed Tom Purves, Rolls-Royce’s chief exec, who is on hand to explain the car to potential customers (of which there are many).

I love this new Ghost. It looks much less ostentatious than the massive Phantom sedan with its Greek Temple–style grille and hood the size of Texas.

Its more compact dimensions should also make it more of a driver’s car too.

But it’s hard to focus on the new Ghost without your eyes diverting to the outrageous cherry-red Rolls Phantom Drophead convertible berthed alongside.

It’s here to be officially handed over to the passionate Rolls enthusiast, Michael Fux. The Miami-based pony-tailed sexagenarian, who made a fortune selling his memory-foam mattress empire, has more than 100 cars in his collection, including a much-photographed, allyellow Phantom Drophead.

His latest purchase took a team of Rolls-Royce artisans more than three months to create and reportedly cost more than $700,000. Its array of bespoke features includes white leather–covered floors, a red carbon fiber dash, an all-white leather interior, 10 coats of paint and a crystal Flying Lady on the hood.

“What can I say? I love creating cars that are unique. I challenged Rolls-Royce to build this car and they delivered,” Fux says.

After a Saturday spent gliding our blue Phantom Coupé down the spectacular Pacific Coast Highway to Big Sur, Sunday morning finds us at Pebble Beach perusing 200 of the world’s finest classics lined up on the famous fairway.

Celebs are everywhere. TV funnyman and consummate car guy Jay Leno is walking between the priceless Packards and Duesenbergs, while Jerry Seinfeld is over there polishing his Porsche race car, watched by the “Governator,” Arnold Schwarzenegger.

As for the fabled Best in Show award, it eventually goes to a massive, meticulously restored silver convertible built in 1937 by the now-defunct German company Horsch. It’s probably worth more than $3 million.

Tapas, like most things when introduced into the American culture, have become a diluted interpretation of their Spanish origins.

It has come to mean any small-plate presentation of food. Fortunately, places like IM Tapas keep the Spanish tradition intact. From its Spanish wine and beer selections to the arroz con leche dessert made with rice grown in the mountains of the Spanish province Murcia, this off-the-beaten-path restaurant is the real thing—a place to dine, unhurried, on the finer things español.

With only about a dozen linen-clad tables, some bar seating (one chair, however, permanently occupied by a mannequin wearing a gaucho hat), and objets d’art occupying the walls, the decor is minimalist but warm. Interesting, chunky crockery and sleek, chic flatware add to the fun and novelty.

Clueless about Spanish wine and beer, we depended upon our server, Mary (the M in IM —Chef Isabel is the first initial) for recommendations, and she steered us straight with a clean-on-the-palate Oro de Castilla Verdejo wine and honey-hued Alhambra beer. A flattened loaf of crusty bread arrived with lentil hummus, delicious with its nutty, cumin and peppery flavors.

The menu is divided by soup, salad, cold tapas, hot tapas and specialties. The latter

with a tongue-tingling end. Fat Mediterranean mussels waded in a creamy pool of broth so delicious we spooned it all up.

Other hot choices include black sausage, shrimp in garlic sauce, spicy octopus over potatoes, piquillo peppers stuffed with salt cod with pepper-tomato coulis, and duck breast seared with caramelized fig and port reduction.

The rice pudding and a strong, bold coffee flan with espresso liqueur concluded one of the most wonderfully unique dining experiences we can remember: so true, and a rewarding nudge from our comfort zone. ◆ For her restaurant reviews, Chelle Koster Walton dines anonymously and at the expense of Naples Illustrated.

includes two types of paella, both with lobster, and toasted pasta with shrimp and scallops, which must be shared by at least two and requires about 35 minutes of prep. Nightly specials fill a separate sheet of paper.

We started with beet napoleon and white anchovies al ajillo. A work of art, the roasted, lightly pickled beets were stacked with the “glue” of Catalunyan Capri chèvre (goat cheese), bathed in a balsamic reduction and finished with toasted pine nuts and lardons, chewy bits of thick bacon. The menu name-drops its fine imported products, such as the Marcona almonds and Valdeón blue cheese in the endive salad, with blackberries and organic pomegranate reduction. The five-cheese ($30) and eight-cheese board ($40) are cut to order from the kitchen’s selection of 22 artisanal cheeses, requiring 20 minutes.

Other cold tapas range from olive mix to ostrich carpaccio. I regretted not ordering one of the three soups—chilled red or white gazpacho and garlic soup—but truthfully, I couldn’t choose from these favorites of mine.

Our hot food followed—artichoke hearts filled with serrano chile and manchego, and mussels in a spicy sherry and chorizo reduction. Both popped our taste buds. The lovely, long-stemmed artichoke hearts languished in a garlic fumé sauce that set off the richness of its cheesy filling—slightly milder than goat cheese and NOVEMBER 2009 45

Balance has always been important to Christiana Chiang. To arrive at the vanguard of Chinese American restaurants, she balanced her business training with her husband, Charles’, flair for cooking to create a winning formula.

From an old warehouse in Alexandria, Virginia, emerged an upscale chain of Chinese restaurants in 1976 that considers service as important as the sesame chicken or crab rangoon.

The first two houses the Chiangs bought were for employees. When the Charlie Chiang’s restaurant opened at Doubletree Guest Suites in North Naples in 2006, the Chiangs purchased a townhouse for the wait staff.

The employees are everything, says Chiang, who still flavors her fluent English with a Taiwanese accent. “You should put on your heart and treat them like family. This is my philosophy; I’ve got to take care of them.”

Managing people and restaurants was not her first choice when she attended the University of Chicago in 1971. At the behest of her father, she studied business in America, something the artist in her dreaded.

“I said no, I want to go to art school,” she says. “Then he suggests again, ‘You should be your own boss.’ He says, ‘Why don’t we take a walk.’”

She knew that any “advice” during such walks with her dad were law, but she also knew she admired America. Her hospitality career began by accident when she was called upon to take over a restaurant in the Washington suburbs. Her sparkling personality and marketing skills led to the restaurant’s first profits, and gave her the confidence to take over a 500-seat deli, even though the only sandwich she and Charlie knew how to make was a BLT. Her love of design was fulfilled through decor that sets her restaurants apart. She still designs restaurants and her own dresses, but a clothing line she’s considering must wait until some other projects, including Ping, her recently launched stylish fusion concept restaurant, are all rolling along.

Chiang knows tastes can adapt, as long as there is a strong foundation.

“We feel we have a mission. We just need to be authentic,” she says. “We need to introduce to the American consumer some really nice food. It’s not just a Chinese restaurant, it’s global now.” ◆

Nonpotable bitters began as patent medicines, the most notable example being Angostura. This concoction of roots, bark and herbs was perfected in 1824 by a German doctor stationed in Angostura, Venezuela, and was originally intended to suppress fevers and nausea. It found its most noble function as the foundation and coloring for Pink Gin. Shortly afterward, a native of Haiti who had settled in New Orleans invented Peychaud’s Bitters. Created from a base of gentian, it became the foundation for the Sazerac cocktail, and was frequently used in Manhattans, old-fashioneds and whiskey sours. Prior to Prohibition, in fact, it was hard to find a cocktail that did not contain bitters.

In their quest to bring back the classic cocktails, modern mixologists have stocked their bars with a range of exotic, small-batch bitters. The Fee Brothers of

Rochester, New York, makes a complete product line: peach, mint, lemon, grapefruit, West Indian orange and whiskey barrel aged bitters. The Bitter Truth, a German company best known for celery, lemon and orange bitters, has recently agreed to distribute the products of Bittermen’s, an artisanal brand owned by Avery and Janet Glasser. As a result, Bittermen’s grapefruit and Xocolatl Mole will soon be available on the open market. Regan’s Orange Bitters, made by cocktail guru Gary Regan, is also coming into general distribution.

Potable bitters have become the aperitif of choice in the United States, and have inspired bartenders in the country’s leading markets. It all began with Campari, which was invented by Gaspare Campari, a cutting-edge Milan mixologist of the 1860s. The closely guarded formula is a main ingredient of both the Negroni and Americano, and is frequently enjoyed with club soda.

While Americans tend to think of Amaro as a brand name, it’s actually an entire category of Italian bitters in a range of styles and flavors. Averna, first concocted by Salvatore Averna in 1868, has been described as sweet and thick, with a slight herbal bitterness. Amaro Montenegro is a specialty of Bologna, produced from 40 different herbs and popular as an after-coffee drink. There are several dozen regional variations of amaro, including Punt e Mes, a dark brown vermouth with a bitter sweetness.

Antonio Benedetto Carpano is generally credited for inventing vermouth in 1786, using the technique of infusing herbs and spices into wine. Today, the same parent company that makes Punt e Mes also produces Carpano Antica Formula, sometimes called the world’s best red vermouth.

Sweeter and more full-bodied than Punt e Mes, connoisseurs find Carpano Antica to have flavors of vanilla, orange rind, dried apricot and baking spices. While it can be used to make a terrific Negroni, purists prefer to drink it on the rocks.

Without doubt, the hottest bitter currently on the market is Fernet. In its various forms, this concoction of herbs and spices has become an underground sensation among bartenders, sommeliers and restaurant personnel in general. The best-known version is Fernet-Branca; if you grew up in an Italian family, it’s likely that your grandmother gave you this black, bitter liquid when you had an upset stomach.

Consumption of Fernet-Branca is high in Argentina, where reportedly three million cases are consumed each year, but some areas of the United States are catching up rapidly. Jackson Cannon, head mixologist at Eastern Standard in Boston, used 168

To see an Oscar de la Renta gown is to love one. To meet Oscar himself is to fall under the spell of his Old School Latin charm.

The first time de la Renta visited Naples in 1997, Kimberley Speer Miller and Marissa Hartington were on their way to the venue to make sure all was perfect before his arrival at a fundraiser. To their surprise, de la Renta himself was at the top of the stairs.

“He’s gorgeous,” Miller says. “He kissed my hand. I loved him.

He was the perfect, exquisite gentleman.”

De la Renta talked to her about area charities and issues close to his heart. “He didn’t just talk to talk, he wanted to engage in conversation,” Miller recalls.

“When it was time to go in, he said, ‘It’s time for showbiz,’” and took the ladies on each arm to make his entrance. “He’s incredibly polished and good-looking,” Miller says. “I could see him playing himself in a James Bond movie, with all the gowns and beautiful people.”

De la Renta, no doubt, would not play the villain.

Now 77, the designer is charming as always, even when trying to end a telephone conversation that creeps a few minutes longer than expected. Vacationing at his home in Punta Cana, an idyllic resort in his native Dominican Republic, de la Renta patiently answers questions until he finds just the right moment to politely say goodbye.

“Did you get everything you need?” he asks in his lilting accent.

Leave it to de la Renta to worry about making sure a woman gets what she needs. Known for nearly four decades as a designer who infuses elegantly adorned suits and gowns with his Latin American vision of femininity, de la Renta has endeared himself to a social set in search of the right dress for every occasion.

“He is the designer who dresses an uptown woman in the tradition of a Babe Paley or Jackie O,” says Laird Borelli-Persson, senior editor at style.com, the online home of Vogue. “We’re talking about a very polished woman with great legs, whose hair is always done, someone who is going to the Met or to the Hamptons.”

The Oscar woman is someone like Naples resident Kathleen Kapnick, a long-time admirer of his exquisite workmanship and use of bold color, beautiful fabrics and well-chosen embellishments.

“One of my favorite Oscar pieces is a little black dress that you can wear with flats and different accessories, giving it a different look depending on what other pieces you’re wearing,” says Kapnick, whose family is one of the main donors to the new Naples Botanical Garden, where de la Renta’s Spring runway show will be presented by Marissa Collections at Hats in the Garden November 11. “It’s a perfect little dress for Naples because it’s something you can wear to lunch and then into the evening.”

Naples is a top market for Oscar de la Renta, and Marissa Collections is one of the nation’s top-selling Oscar boutiques.

It doesn’t hurt that owner Marissa Hartington is a big fan of his creations; her two favorite pieces are a hand-beaded dress accented by a belt of jade, tourmalines and pink coral, and an olive green gown. When the designer was in Naples in 1997, the trunk show was the most successful in the country. Marissa Collections also invited him for another charity fundraiser in February 2000.

“He has been our guest on a number of occasions and has always been charming, gentle and soft-spoken,” Hartington says. “He is also very engaging. He has shared memories with me of his life in Paris—he remembered the slim flannel skirts, cashmere sweaters with gray pearls and chignons.”

De la Renta’s timeless pieces appeal to actresses such as Penelope Cruz and Sarah Jessica Parker, and political spouses, like Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton and Cindy McCain. Borelli-Persson says nostalgia for Babe and Jackie refinement draws his newer aficionados, who want something “traditional, but not boring.”

Take former First Daughter Jenna Bush, for example, who may have proven Oscar love is genetic. Her mother, former First Lady Laura Bush, wore a beaded pale blue gown created by the designer to her husband’s 2005 inauguration. For her 2008 wedding in Crawford, Texas, the younger Bush chose a curve-hugging, V-necked organza de la Renta gown with a small train, ornate beading and embroidery.

Though he has his devotees, times have changed and women have too, often using their newfound buying power to branch out to other fashion houses.

“In the days of Truman Capote, there were fewer media outlets, and women lived to be photographed,” Borelli-Persson says. “Women also had different roles. For example, they were identified in captions as the wife of a publishing magnate. Now the wife is the magnate, roles have changed, and there’s much more scrutiny than there used to be. People change outfits between events and women have more spending power and choice than they used to have.”

The most high-profile example of this modern woman is First Lady Michelle Obama, who has embraced not only J.Crew, but also young designers such as Jason Wu and Isabel Toledo. De la Renta famously criticized Obama this past spring for wearing a sweater to meet Queen Elizabeth, but eventually clarified his remarks on the television show The View, explaining that she should be wearing American designers to these events in order to support the fashion industry.

De la Renta acknowledges the challenges of making a more economically empowered woman fall in love with his work as well as the challenges of designing in a down economy. But he chooses to be inspired by it, rather than discouraged.

“Regardless of what the economy is doing, women are not going to go naked in the streets,” he says. “And I won’t be making dresses out of potato sacks either.”

Surprisingly, there was a time when de la Renta wasn’t even interested in fashion. He originally moved to Spain in 1950 to study painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid.

Determined to show his father that he could make money as an artist, de la Renta began sketching fashions for newspapers and magazines. Soon, he was hired by designer Cristobal Balenciaga, whom he calls probably the greatest designer of the 1950s and 1960s.

“Once I was there I really fell in love with fashion and felt like that was something that I really liked to do and could succeed at,” he says. He eventually moved to Paris where he worked for Antonio Castillo at Lanvin, and then to New York, where he worked for Elizabeth Arden before launching his own line in 1965.

He gave up painting, but his art school days heavily influenced his work.

“One of the classes I took as a student was the History of Art, which is very much linked to fashion,” he says. “Fashion is a reflection of the times in which we live and one of the biggest indicators of what history was like is to look at how people were dressed. The one thing that I believe is lacking today in a lot of fashion students is an understanding of fashions throughout history. You always have to be able to look back to look forward,” the designer believes. “So many times

Artful Dressing Artist Carmelo Blandino sees art in wellconstructed designer gowns. His large-scale (generally life-size or larger) paintings of high fashion are as much a tribute to the designer as they are to the human figure. Using the classic technique of encaustic—also known as hot wax painting—Blandino seeks to reflect the artistic quality and integrity of designer gowns, as well as the personality of their designer.

“There’s something about the sense of history, modernism, elegance and empowerment of women in these dresses,” Blandino says. He also wants his work to be light and fun. The artist says the dress paintings are a natural extension of his artistic exploration of landscapes and florals. As for Oscar de la Renta, Blandino says he likes the “soft-spoken royalty” feeling de la Renta’s designs convey. “His personality comes across beautifully in what he designs,” Blandino says.

“You just know Oscar will make you look good.”

The Constant Gardener Oscar de la Renta has always had an affinity for flowers, both in his designs and in his personal space. For decades, the avid gardener has cultivated his Connecticut estate, creating an abundance of trees, flowers and beautiful spaces. Even the interior walls are covered with elaborate antique chintz fabric and florals.

Perhaps this horticultural affinity, along with his love affair with the women of

His mentors—Castillo and Balenciaga—also influenced his designs. De la Renta says he incorporated Castillo’s knack for creating ultra-feminine clothes and Balenciaga’s skill at finding new ways to cut and construct designs into his work.

Naples, were what prompted the venerable fashion icon to agree to be the guest designer for Naples Botanical Garden’s Hats in the Garden November 11, which marks the garden’s opening.

Attendees will view a fashion show of de la Renta’s Spring 2010 collection, one of the first public showings following the runways of New York’s September Fashion Week, with the designer himself holding court.

As the business of fashion has changed and big name houses have been purchased by large conglomerates such as LVMH, de la Renta has been one of the few designers to maintain control over his business, enlisting family members (his daughter, son-in-law and son work with him in various capacities) to help him along the way.

“Oscar keeps his head down and does his work,” Borelli-Persson says. “With him, it’s not about drama; it’s about the clothes and hard work.

It’s a question of determination. He started this business and maintained a certain level of success and a very loyal following. He is training his son [Moises, whom he adopted in 1984] to continue in his tradition.”

For de la Renta, it’s all about being true to his vision. Though the economy is struggling, de la Renta says staying true to that vision helps his business remain strong.

“He always gives you something to love, whether he’s telling a Russian story for fall or using polka dots,” Borelli-Persson says. “He does a great cocktail dress. One of my favorites is a black ensemble with feathers. But he still manages to make it light and happy, and what woman wouldn’t want to feel like a bubble in Champagne?”

Soaring palms, twisted gumbo-limbo trees, giant lily pads, waving grasses, waterfalls, lakes and birds—oh, so many birds. It’s a veritable Eden—a place of peace and serenity.

The property—just south of downtown Naples off Bayshore Drive—has been buzzing with activity for months. Workers moved earth, raked dirt, poured cement and installed thousands of plants and trees from around the state and around the world.

When the Naples Botanical Garden opens to the community November 14, it will undoubtedly be one of the finest attractions in Southwest Florida.

Let Naples Illustrated take you on a sneak preview tour of this beautiful utopia about to bloom.

CHILDREN’S GARDEN First stop, the awe-inspiring Vicky C. and David Byron Smith Children’s Garden, a fantasy playground come to life amid a lush garden and flowing streams.

Cabbage palms, red mangroves and cypress trees shade multiple activity areas. Picture a watering can that sprinkles laughing children below, bench swings swaying in the breeze, tree houses for exploring the leafy canopies and a butterfly house full of the magical flitting creatures.

There’s even a waterfall that children can walk behind.

“It kind of mimics some of the springs we have in northern Florida with all the natural caverns,” says Brian Galligan, the horticulture manager for the Naples Botanical Garden. “[The Children’s Garden] will be fun for the kids, NOVEMBER 2009 67

that’s for sure—anything that involves water and dirt and freedom.”

Many of the trees in the Botanical Garden, including a royal Poinciana and a strangler fig in the Children’s Garden, were saved from the original underbrush on the site.

BRAZILIAN GARDEN Renowned Miami-based designer Raymond Jungles created the eye-popping Brazilian Garden, which is a mix of natural and man-made.

He was inspired in part by one of his mentors—the famed Brazilian designer Roberto Burle Marx. In fact, this area of the Botanical Garden features a vibrantly colored mosaic of squares, circles and stripes composed by Burle Marx himself.

The centerpiece of the garden is a rising cement platform topped by benches and ponds.

Water cascades from one level to the next, and in the ponds, visitors will stare agog at the Victoria amazonica, or giant water lilies, that cover the surface like huge green bowls. These native Brazilian water plants are so large, they can support the weight of a small person.

Other trees and plants indigenous to Brazil include the American oil palm and varieties of the popular philodendron.

“When visitors come into the garden, the first thing they are going to see is the Burle Marx plaza,” says Jim LaGrippe, who along with his wife Ann, underwrote the Brazilian Garden. “I knew [Jungles’] reputation and when we heard about his participation in the garden, we got really excited. We have seen some of his gardens ... and they are absolutely sensational.”

RIVER OF GRASS The Mary and Stephen B. Smith River of Grass, which runs through the heart of the Naples Botanical Garden, is a delightful respite from the more formal areas of the garden.

This wide strip of native grasses flows to one of the many lakes dotting the property. During rainy season, the water levels will be high as rainwater collected from around the garden is naturally treated and released into the surrounding preserve land.

says. “It’s flowing through native grasses and water lilies and ... it gives us a really good chance to clean the water out.”

Like its namesake Everglades, this miniature River of Grass is lined with sawgrass and Fakahatchee grass. Ospreys and bald eagles are seen regularly. Visitors will have ample opportunity to enjoy both the wildlife and the whispers from the swaying grass as they stroll the boardwalks wending through the area.

CARIBBEAN GARDEN The focus of the Kathleen and Scott

Kapnick Caribbean Garden is on the flora as well as the people of the Caribbean.

Banana plants and sugarcane are two of the types of foliage visitors will discover—examples of plants that have proved critical to the Caribbean way of life for centuries.

The garden also is home to a traditional chattel house, a wooden home like those used by field workers on many islands. The home will feature steel drums for visitors to play and the shelter can be used as a respite from sun or rain.

Another remarkable site in the Carib-

bean Garden is a long path lined with coral-encased pillars. These support a pergola, which will be covered with a climbing, twisting jade vine to create a shaded walkway.

The Caribbean Garden is named for Kathleen and Scott Kapnick, whose family’s foundation has been a major supporter of the Naples Botanical Garden.

“We think the location [of the Caribbean Garden] within the garden is quite special—surrounded by the lakes,” says Kathleen Kapnick. “It’s a perfect spot for the contemplation of nature.”

Garden Roots The roots of a world-class botanical garden in Naples stretch back to 1993, when a group of visionary Neapolitans first started making plans. The dream became a reality when Harvey Kapnick, a former chairman of Arthur Andersen and a resident of Naples, provided a generous endowment to the nascent garden, allowing the purchase of a 170acre site.

Kapnick, a long-time Chicago resident, had always enjoyed the Chicago Botanic Garden and hoped to see a similar oasis created in Naples.

“He supported symphonies and operas and museums, but he had a special 70 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

place in his heart for gardens,” says Kathleen Kapnick, his daughter-in-law.

“He believed that a garden was a place for young and old to contemplate and reflect on life’s journey.”

Harvey Kapnick passed away in 2002, but his dream lives on, thanks to the generosity of his heirs and the Kapnick Family Foundation.

“We too support cultural institutions and in these economic times ... these institutions are often the first to lose support because people see them as nonessential. We believe the opposite,” Kathleen Kapnick says. “Harvey never left anything unfinished, and we wanted to see the garden completed to keep his

track record unsullied.”

The first gardens and features opening this month are just the beginning for the Naples Botanical Garden. Plans are already under way for the future Florida Garden, featuring native and old Florida plants such as bougainvillea, as well as an Asian Garden, highlighting plants and trees of Asia. There’s even talk of a Garden of Africa—and there’s plenty of room to grow beyond that.

SOUTH WETLANDS Not every part of the Botanical Garden has been carefully planned. One large area is being left up to Mother Nature—with a wee bit of help from humans.

The Collier Enterprises South Wetlands is a vast natural area along the garden’s southern and western flanks. At one time, it was full to the brim with melaleuca trees—an invasive species originally from Australia. Garden staff oversaw a huge melaleuca removal project, using the melaleuca as mulch found in other sections of the gardens. Removing the pest also uncovered some wonderful examples of indigenous plants and trees.

“We saved multiple red mangroves that are now in the River of Grass,” says Galligan. “They are slow-growing and ... they are not possible to obtain in nurseries or on the commercial plant market.

They are priceless.”

The clearing and maintenance of the South Wetlands has been supported through a valuable partnership with Collier Enterprises. The hope is it will become a center of learning for restoring the environment and controlling invasive species.

“The garden will be able to develop educational programs around the preserve that will serve to bring community awareness

to the valuable asset we have in our wetlands,” says Tom Flood, CEO of Collier Enterprises.

BIRDING TOWER There’s a perfect vantage point from which to enjoy the South Wetlands—14 feet up in the air, atop the James and Linda White Birding Tower. At the end of a short boardwalk, the tower extends into the wetlands and offers a great place to watch the many local and migratory birds that pass through the area.

Blue herons, tricolored herons, wood storks, egrets and ibises are frequent visitors. Osprey are often spotted swooping down into the surrounding ponds and grabbing a fish for lunch. During the busy spring migration period, the area can attract 200 or more wading birds at one time. The tower was built in great part through a donation from James and Linda White. Linda is a past chairman of the garden board and Jim is an avid photographer. The birding tower was a no-brainer for them.

“The wetlands attract so many great Florida birds,” says Jim White, who has seen snowy egrets, pelicans and hawks. “The tower adds another dimension to the garden besides just the plants.” ◆ NOVEMBER 2009 71

Culture Pearls With a strong foundation built about a decade ago, Naples’ bedrock cultural organizations look ahead.

Ten years ago, the United Arts Council of Collier County observed a little cultural bloom in Naples, the once sleepy beach town. Thirty-five different arts agencies, more than 50 galleries and a variety of cultural programs enjoyed the prosperity of the region’s gung-ho real estate industry and seasonal tourist economy. The region was ramping up to the apex of its steep growth, and the influx of sophisticated, cosmopolitan visitors and residents spurred demand for a rich cultural life. The Naples Museum of Art, the glittering complement to the acclaimed Philharmonic Center for the Arts, was to open in November 2001; both the Naples Art Association and the Naples Players had been in their downtown digs for two years, creating hubs of cultural activity along Fifth Avenue South—from experimental theater and elegant chamber music to lively art exhibits and festivals. The Naples Winter Wine Festival, an upstart charity wine auction, became a national phenomenon in its debut, earning more than $3 million.

Now, people refer to those as “the boom times,” when real estate was jumping and the living was high. Undeniably, times are leaner now, and while shadows have reached even the sunniest streets of 72 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

As part of efforts to enrich the arts culture in Southwest Florida, Opera Naples engages national professional singing actors, stage directors and conductors while encouraging talented local performers. The group produces at least three operas per season in a variety of styles. In addition to the Third Annual Opera Under the Stars concert in Cambier Park November 13 and 14, Opera Naples’ season includes performances of Verdi’s Il Trovatore, a unique version of Romeo & Juliet at the International Design Center, Estero, and Mozart’s The Magic Flute in Cambier Park.

Southwest Florida, the Naples community remains intent on keeping its cultural landscape flourishing.

“Today, there are 48 nonprofit cultural organizations, more than 100 galleries, and around 500 visual and performing artists we’ve brought together,” says Elaine Hamilton, executive director of the United Arts Council.

“The community’s pulled together, formed unique partnerships. We’ve become aware of the value that cultural tourists have.”

Hamilton notes signs of Naples progress as a cultural destination. The city was listed among the 100 best art towns in America in John Villani’s 2006 book by the same name, and was named in the top 25 arts destinations in American Style magazine this year. “The economy is definitely affecting us, and there is more competition for funds and tickets,” she says. “But the community’s strengths lie in those partnerships and our ability to work together.”

One of the outstanding and most basic testaments to that partnership is the Naples Children & Education Foundation, the sponsor and beneficiary of the Naples Winter Wine Festival. In 10 years, NCEF has raised $74.5 million for underprivileged and at-risk kids, with grants to basic service providers of dental and medical care, as well as to organizations that promote education and culture, such as the Boys & Girls Club and other child-care and literacy programs in the region.

“When we first had the idea for the Wine Festival, we knew we wanted to raise money to help the community’s kids in very basic ways, and along the way, to elevate food and wine in Naples,” says one of the festival’s founding trustees, Jeff Gargiulo, citing the chefs, vintners and entrepreneurs who continue to contribute to Naples after the festival experience.

“We never thought about a huge legacy, but about becoming an integral part of the community. I think we’ve done that,” adds trustee Jim Malone, about the ways NCEF has influenced nearly a generation of local kids.

Building on that foundation, a growing and younger crop of Neapolitans and a lively group of organizations provide an increasingly rich cultural landscape. In addition to the Philharmonic Center for the Arts, the Naples Art Association at the von Liebig Art Center, and the Naples Players at the Sugden Community Theatre, Naples has Classic Chamber Concerts, the five-year-old Opera Naples, and two up-and-coming professional theater companies, Gulfshore Playhouse and TheatreZone.

New to the mix are the Children’s Museum of Naples, and a feisty independent arts scene that includes a budding professional ballet company, the Naples International Film Festival, artist studio walks, and a nascent,

Each year, the Philharmonic Center offers a wide variety of performances. With choices ranging from the operatic voice of Renée Fleming, the cool jazz of Woody Allen’s New Orleans Jazz Band, and the music of notable visiting orchestras, to the precision of the Moscow Festival Ballet, and an unexpected blend of rock and classical music as the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra performs “The Music of Led Zeppelin” with a full rock band led by acclaimed Robert Plant sound-alike Randy Jackson, the Phil has something for everyone.

Spoleto-type theater festival. A majority of these programs have educational outreach programs, including the Philharmonic’s programs in the schools, the von Liebig’s summer ARTScool, Naples Players’ KidzAct, Gulfshore Playhouse’s Suncoast For Kids Foundation, and Opera Naples’ Teen Performing summer camp. These outreach programs provide the dual benefits of community enrichment and ensuring the future of art in a new generation.

While everyone feels the pinch of the economy, many of these groups are small, efficient, flexible and mobile. Some find opportunities, as Opera Naples did with the purchase of its large rehearsal and storage space in the Bayshore Triangle. The group received help from community partnerships, like the Bayshore Redevelopment District, which continues to court the arts to enrich that once-blighted neighborhood, and TIB Bank, which held the note on the derelict foreclosed property Opera Naples will salvage.

Of course, the cornerstone for the arts in Southwest Florida remains the Philharmonic Center for the Arts, the umbrella for the increasingly acclaimed Naples Philharmonic and the Naples Museum of Art, recently renamed in honor of Patty and Jay Baker for their $10 million endowment. It was the arts foundation that drew Patty and Jay Baker to Naples to retire in 2000. “We were aware of Naples’ cultural landscape when we moved here fulltime—particularly the Phil,” Patty Baker says. Though the couple has been generous to a wide spectrum of organizations, including the Naples Children & Education Foundation, Patty Baker’s background in theater and the arts has always led her philanthropic giving in that direction.

She is a longtime loyal supporter of the Naples Players, and continues to enjoy surprising cultural organizations with well-considered largesse. “Artists reflect our times, and I hate to be bleak, but our times are making giving to the arts an increasing challenge. … It’s not important for us to have our names on buildings, but it is important because we hope other people see it and think, ‘If they can do it, so can we!’ We hope it encourages others to give.”

With a strong foundation, visionaries are confident the arts will continue to flourish. “We have a very strong cultural community and it might seem very easy, but quality is never easy, and the foundation always needs to hold to quality,” says Myra Daniels, CEO of Naples Museum of Art and the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. “As budgets become more severe and there’s less arts in the schools, we need to protect children’s futures in the arts. Naples audiences are sophisticated and educated about the arts, and I think we can take some of the credit for [that],” Daniels says. “A community without the arts is a community without a soul.” ◆

ART SCENE INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE A new film festival aims to bring attitude to Naples.

The offerings of most film festivals always seem to be the product of some esoteric panel of judges—you know, pompous, scholarly types who refer to movies as “film” and frown at popcorn. That’s why sitting down with a beer on a summer weeknight at Six Degrees Exhibitions at the waterfront Dockside Boardwalk to watch and debate on four submissions for the Naples International Film Festival is so refreshing.

And it isn’t just the cold beer.

Festival stands out in its intention to bring the community into the process of building a new, feisty film festival with its own distinct attitude.

“The greatest thing about Naples is the possibilities,” says Ellen Goldberg, film submission manager and a transplant to Naples from Los Angeles via New York. “Do you think if I went to the New York Film Festival they’d put me in charge of anything? Here … anything’s possible. Little places can sometimes surprise you.”

Since the spring, prospective films for the November festival have been screened for gallery guests, along with an ad-hoc panel of “celebrity” jurists, followed by a round of lively, moderated discussion before the films were rated.

“We wanted this film festival to be as inclusive as possible and reflect Naples’ surprising diversity,” says Samuel, whose own varied background includes upbringing in Africa. “With the Marco Island Film Festival shutting down, it just seemed like the time to replace what we’ve lost, to support different artists, and make something happen.”

To festival Executive Director Raddatz, starting a film festival from scratch can’t be that difficult. “It can’t be as hard as raising a 12-yearold daughter,” says Raddatz, who was inspired to help launch the Naples festival after attending the venerable Edinburgh International Film Festival. “I thought, ‘How hard can this be?’ People do it. I can do this.”

Organizers believe the timing is right for Naples to have its own film festival. “Naples has evolved its own look: sophisticated, lowkey, and with a distinct, quiet international element,” says Linehan, also a New York transplant. “It’s not the little hideaway for the rich and famous anymore, but a culturally rich and viable place to live.

SOUTHERN CHARM The Magnolia Ball raised nearly $1 million to underwrite four Magnolia Suites with home-like touches for patients at the NCH Oncology Unit, as well as an outpatient infusion center at NCH. White-gloved waiters served mint juleps at the event at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples. Since it started in 2001, the event, held every other year, has raised nearly $5 million for cancer research and treatment.

Ed Wollman comes from a family tradition of philanthropy. His grandfather, a CPA for 50 years, died with very little, having distributed his wealth to those in need. His aunt was an attorney for the Salvation Army. Wollman, an estate attorney and Naples resident for the past 20 years, follows suit.

“I like helping a charitable cause that needs attention,” he says. “Some more popular charities appear to be well funded, so I seek out those that need to raise awareness of their wonderful contributions to the community.”

Wollman is a past chairman of the board and current board member for Avow Hospice; a board member of the Naples Art Association; a member of the Professional Advisor Council for the Community Foundation of Collier County; a member of the Advisory Board for the Parkinson Association of Southwest Florida Inc.; a member of the Planned Giving Committee of Naples Community Hospital; a past member of the board of directors for Sunrise Children’s Foundation; and a past board member for the American Cancer Society.

Each year, his firm Wollman, Gehrke & Solomon PA, and Legacy Foundation Group LLC, hold a Sweet Charity event to introduce others to charities they support. “I hope everyone is aware of how much they are needed individually and the unbelievable opportunity to help those in need in our community,” Wollman says.

He starts by being a role model for his own children. His advice: actions speak louder than words, make a difference whenever you can, and let children see the benefits of giving at a very young age. “Build a Habitat home with your kids,” Wollman suggests. “It is a blast.

“I’d like my children and grandchildren to describe me as fun, a great friend, a teacher and tried to beat me in games and sports.’” ◆
