On the cover Continuing our theme of community collaboration over the years, we once again asked local artists to submit their latest artwork to be considered for the cover of our annual Naples Charity Register. The winning piece, Embracing Cultural Diversity, features four musicians performing on the Naples Pier while a profusion of colors lights up the sky behind them. The artist, third-time winner Adorable Monique, wanted the emotion of her piece to reflect the diverse nature of the local community. “The pier is a landmark in town, a special place people of all backgrounds can share, and I love how it’s a gathering place,” says the Honduran-born artist. “I wanted this piece to be a celebration of community—even the birds in the sky represent the egrets, pelicans, and other birds that are also a part of our community.” —Anna Bjorlin

Behind the Glitter

MEGAN DIPIERO

I

often speak of the tireless efforts put forth by teams of people, mostly volunteers, to organize the fabulous soirees highlighted in this magazine. Finding the perfect recipe of glitter and glam, mixed with a pinch of a heartstring-pulling program that encourages donations, is challenging to say the least, especially when there are more than 100 other organizations working from the same recipe book. As publisher of the Naples Charity Register and Naples Illustrated, I have attended quite a few galas, dinners, luncheons, and unique philanthropic events over the years. I must say, while it always feels good to join with others in a charitable cause, it’s also easy to get complacent when you don’t have any “skin in the game,” so to speak. You can don your tuxedo or ball gown and dance the night away knowing that your ticket purchase and contributions will make a difference to someone, even if that beneficiary is more concept than reality. But when that someone becomes a best friend and mentor struggling with cancer, a family member with a lifethreatening drug addiction, or a child with mental illness, the true purpose of the parties comes through in a whole new light. At least, it has for me. I am looking forward to this charity season with a renewed attitude, an open mind, and an immensely grateful heart. Most of the ladies and gentlemen who give their time have selected the organizations that they want to stand behind for a reason—and now is the time to choose yours. If you have not yet found that reason, pull back the curtains and look a little harder. Shine your light on someone so they in turn can do the same for another.

FROM THE EDITOR

A Bright Spot

W

hile the sunshine and relaxing beachside atmosphere continually draw part-time residents and annual visitors back to the Paradise Coast, anyone who has called Naples home knows it’s the community’s spirit of generosity that truly sets the town apart. This year is no different, as the arrival of milder temperatures heralds the return of another social season full of glamorous galas, fabulous fashion shows, and delicious dinners—all held in support of charitable causes near and dear to many locals’ hearts. We highlight these can’t-miss events in our annual Naples Charity Register, which shines a spotlight on the hard work area organizations are involved in all year round. As we look forward to this special time of philanthropic giving, I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to direct the Naples Charity Register’s editorial content once more, this time from a remote office. Although I worked on the magazine from way up north in Minnesota, a state many part-time Neapolitans also call home, I was both surprised and humbled to find so many organizations not only remembered me from my past efforts on the Naples Charity Register and Naples Illustrated, but also made sure to tell me how happy they were to work with me again. That simple kindness just goes to show how warm and welcoming the community truly is. This year, you’ll find some delightful aquatic elements among our pages. Turn to the eco-focused feature on page 38, which chronicles how individuals and organizations alike are protecting and preserving our beautiful and oft-endangered environment. And be sure to browse the ocean-inspired jewelry pieces guaranteed to make a splash at your next soiree starting on page 40. Finally, you’ll notice the lovely designs our talented art director, Ashley Meyer, created to adorn the 100-plus event listings beginning on page 47. But that’s not all: From getting a jump start on your holiday shopping with gifts that give back, to participating in walks and runs for local causes, there’s no end to the unique ways you can impact our community and the world at large for the better. We hope this issue inspires you to get involved, and perhaps even find a new cause to support or event to attend—after all, no one throws a party quite like Naples!

Pan-Florida Challenge

This season, run and ride for causes you care about alongside those who share the same passion By Lianna Matt McLernon

PEDAL WITH PURPOSE Harry Chapin Food Bank’s WINK Feeds Families Hunger Walk

Although the Pan-Florida Challenge features an epic 200-mile, endurance-centered bicycle ride (with meals and lodging provided at the Lake Placid Camp & Conference Center) each spring, it also offers four other routes, including a 10-mile journey. No matter your level of ability, the organization hopes you’ll take up its call to help the 20 percent of children who go hungry in Florida each year. This event is perhaps one of the best ways to not only push yourself physically but also to inspire the philanthropic spirit in yourself and others because every penny of riders’ donations goes toward this cause. In 2018, riders raised an average of $2,187 per person. (panfloridachallenge.org)

FEED THE SOUL Now in its twelfth year, the WINK Feeds Families Hunger Walk—a 2-mile loop around Estero’s Miromar Outlets—has long been the Walking to end hunger

largest anti-hunger event in Southwest Florida. According to the Harry Chapin Food Bank, each dollar raised can be turned into $8 worth of donated food, so every pledge goes a long way. Since the walk began in 2009, more than $2.8 million has been donated to help feed local families in need. As the next walk (scheduled for January 18, 2020) draws closer, make sure to check the website to find the local organizations that have partnered with the walk and its Meals for Harry program. (winkhungerwalk.com)

CARE FOR KIDS Baby Basics of Collier County’s annual 5K Fun Run/Walking Challenge in Naples has a reputation for being a family-friendly event, which is fitting since the organization’s mission is to provide free diapers to low-income, working families. For 26

Baby Basics of Collier County’s 5K Fun Run/ Walking Challenge

two consecutive years, this beloved charitable initiative has raised more than $20,000 through participation fees of just $25 for each adult-andchild pair. For the eleventh annual fun run and walk on February 1, 2020, you can choose to run the 5K or walk anywhere between 1.5 and 6 miles. Afterward, Wynn’s Catering will serve brunch to participants. Opera Naples

Good Time: Opera Naples’ An Egyptian Fantasy Gala Good Deed: Supporting the company’s full production season as well as its education and outreach programs Although Opera Naples wasn’t able to build a giant pyramid for its “An Egyptian Fantasy” gala, the event’s co-chair Bruce Ford jokes, “We did the next best thing and [had] some very beautiful decorations.” On December 11, 2018, the local nonprofit used inspiration from its recent production of Aida to transform the Club at Pelican Bay into an Egyptian palace, complete with burnished gold accents, towers of palm fronds, and a mural of the pyramids. With a dress code of “black-tie optional with Egyptian flair,” many guests wore headdresses and outfits influenced by the culture, with one board member even dressing as a mummy. The event, chaired by Ford and Moira Fennessey and designed by local event planner Rufino Hernandez, was a night of outstanding music and ambience. As guests perused the jewelry up for auction, they sipped cleverly named drinks like the Niletini, the evening’s specialty cocktail. When it came time to transition to the main banquet hall for dinner, guests didn’t just walk in—they entered in a grand march set to the music of Aida’s trumpet fanfare and “Triumphal March.” 28

Other highlights included a live auction and distinguished speakers such as executive director and world-renowned baritone Timothy Todd Simmons and Opera Naples faculty member Sherrill Milnes, but it was the performances that truly stole the show. While professional singers were present, youth performers who’ve trained with Opera Naples also sang throughout the evening, demonstrating how the organization makes a difference not only in the region but to blossoming opera artists around the world. More than $300,000 was raised to support Opera Naples’ productions as well as its education and outreach initiatives, which include the artist residency program, the two-week youth summer academy, opera apprenticeships, and the Elementary In-School performances and curriculum. Thanks to fun and fantastical events like this, the organization can continue to increase community awareness of the art form while bringing in internationally acclaimed artists. With its next gala, Opera Naples hopes to welcome guests to a night at the “New Orleans Mardi Gras” celebration.

The event, led by chairs Terry and Bob Edwards and Jody and Gerald Lippes, was appropriately named “In the Garden of Eden” to celebrate a monumental milestone, while also paving the way for the future. The zoo’s Tropical Garden, created by founder Henry Nehrling, was celebrating its 100th anniversary, and with initiatives like the gala’s fund-a-need project for a new education center, future generations will be able to continue connecting to the natural world in innovative ways. Highlights of the evening included a video of children who had been part of the zoo’s education programs and camps dressed up as zookeepers with baby animals, as well as something the guests themselves had created: the table decorations. Patrons and sponsors who purchased tables had the chance to

decorate them according to the theme, turning the spaces into pseudo-curio and floral exhibits with elements ranging from real apple trees to wildlife place settings and towering flower arrangements. The gala raised more than $1.2 million—a number that not only broke the zoo’s fundraising record for a single event by more than $700,000, but was also matched by the Hamill Family Foundation. To date, the zoo has secured more than $4.3 million of the $5.2 million needed to construct the education center. “The center will serve as a base of operations for visiting school groups and teachers and for students engaged in conservation, environmental, and science education classes,” says Courtney Jolly Goff, the zoo’s director of marketing and public relations. “Once the center is completed, we’re estimating an additional 15,000 to 20,000 children will participate annually in formal onsite programming.” The zoo is working on adding even more to its upcoming gala on November 7, 2019, and the committee plans to open up the tables for custom decor again.

CAUSE&EFFECT

COURTESY STARABILITY FOUNDATION

Bubbly Champagne, crystal tattoos, and sparkling entertainment were just a part of the Dazzling Diamond Soiree, which raised funds for STARability’s community-based programs.

STARability Foundation

Good Time: STARability’s Dazzling Diamond Soiree Good Deed: Funding communitybased programs for adults with developmental disabilities It’s only appropriate that STARability Foundation’s Dazzling Diamond Soiree, held March 9, 2019 at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, was glittering in both decor and entertainment. But it was the shining smiles of the guests of honor—beneficiaries of the organization’s programs—that truly sparkled throughout the evening. Over the past two years, STARability has more than doubled its membership, working with more than 270 adults with developmental disabilities and their families and caregivers. For many, once school ends, so does meaningful programming. STARability has changed that by providing support networks and purpose through recreational leagues, vocational and educational training, and social skills classes. People recognize these efforts, and the Dazzling Diamond Soiree not only sold out of tickets but also sponsorships and underwriting opportunities. During the cocktail hour, guests perused auction items and art created by STARability members, received Swarovski crystal tattoos, and had the opportunity to participate in the “diamond drop,” wherein they could purchase a glass of Champagne—poured by aerialists—and gain a chance 32

to take home real diamonds, such as a custom necklace by Amanda Jaron of A. Jaron Fine Jewelry. The night’s donations and purchases alone raised more than $528,000. When added to the rest of the event’s proceeds, this sum exceeded more than $750,000 to support and hopefully expand STARability’s offerings. “We keep our activities community-based,” says Karen Govern, STARability’s executive director. “We’re not a place where people sit in a room all day. Our members are out in the community creating art, doing sports and fitness, or playing in basketball or bowling leagues.” The event was chaired by Lou and Laura Georgelos, whose child is part of STARability’s programs. Although the theme of next year’s gala, to be held February 29, 2020, has changed to a night of “Glamour and Gold,” Laura’s message remains true: “Our children are sort of like diamonds,” she said in the organization’s 2019 Fund-a-Need video. “Diamonds are carbon that essentially had a dream. They start out unfinished, and with the right heat and nurturing and the proper environment, they blossom into highly valued and prized diamonds.”

GIVING WISELY

Investing in Philanthropy

In the world of charitable donations, return on investment can take many forms

Jerri Hoffmann is a big force in philanthropy in Naples and Illinois, where her name graces the Child & Family Center of Children’s Home & Aid in Carpentersville. Since moving to Naples four years ago, she and her husband, David, have continued to support children’s causes as trustees of the Naples Children & Education Foundation, which provides programs to underprivileged and at-risk kids in Collier County. The entrepreneurial couple, who have invested in more than 20 properties in and around Old Naples, can cite both tangible and intangible returns from their philanthropic investments. “What we look for is a societal return; we want to know that the organizations we support really do make a difference,” says Jerri. “You don’t just want to throw money away.” The Naples Children & Education Foundation has produced real results that include increased high school graduation rates and reduced instances of incarceration and unwanted pregnancy. But the less concrete returns—the ones that pull at heartstrings—are also evident to the Hoffmanns, both of whom come from families that helped others in need. A decade ago, most people with charitable inclinations gave to organizations or causes with the understanding that their money would be spent effectively. Now, donors aren’t content to be so passive and trusting. The new buzzwords in philanthropy are “return on investment,” a concept that typically goes hand in hand with the accountability and results associated with monetary assets. This notion originated with venture philanthropists who came out of the run-up in the stock market before the tech investment bubble burst, says Gene Tempel, founding dean emeritus and professor of philanthropic studies at the Indiana 34

VANESSA ROGERS

By Judy Martel

University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. In the late 1990s, new tech companies with intangible business models were commanding investors’ attention, delivering sky-high earning promises that were often unsustainable. When the bubble burst in 2000, it left a wake of failed companies or evaporating returns. Eventually, the mentality regarding tracking valuations and results crept into the way people think about donating. In the past 10 years, Tempel says, donors have come to expect accountability and transparency from charitable groups. While they’re right to ask how their money is being used and to examine an organization’s financial health through regular reports, Tempel cautions them to take the long view, especially since the

fruit of charitable donations can be intangible. In some instances, results may take time or prove difficult to calculate. An investment in early education may not show verifiable outcomes until those same students graduate from high school and college-entry rates are tallied. A small homeless shelter may be able to list how many meals it serves each month but unable to determine the measurable psychological and physical effect on that population. Part of the joy of investing in philanthropy comes in these hard-earned wins that can reverberate across generations. More often than not, the satisfaction of seeing someone receive a college degree, enjoy the arts, or benefit from medical research is a sufficient return in itself.

Swimming Starboard, Dora Knuteson

These local groups offer creative ways to help protect South Florida’s biodiversity BY KELLY J. FARRELL

School’s Out, Dora Knuteson

As the Persian poet and scholar Rumi once noted and Naples environmental philanthropists demonstrate, “There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.” For Dora Knuteson, this expression takes the form of bright and colorful paintings of seascapes. The Naples artist donates half of her projects’ proceeds to environmental causes, with her first wave of support going toward Captains for Clean Water, an all-inclusive nonprofit advocating for the health of South Florida water systems. Knuteson’s newest series is benefiting Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, which includes 110,000 acres of wetlands that cover much of Collier

Local Organizations Leading the Way Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary offers the public a peek into the 13,000 acres of protected wetlands that provide a buffer from wildfires, says Shawn Clem, research director of the sanctuary. Demonstrating sustainable living using solar energy and a natural wastewater system, the sanctuary works to preserve biodiversity in endangered species like the ghost orchid and Florida panther, and is currently rebuilding its boardwalk post-Irma. County’s coastline. Although she aims to keep her artistic style colorful and uplifting, the inspiration for this latest partnership wasn’t without turmoil. “Last summer, my husband and I were seeing all the dead fish during morning walks on the beach,” she says. “It was heartbreaking.” Like many others in Southwest Florida, her ecological commitment deepened upon witnessing area waterways and sea life devastated by red tide and toxic cyanobacteria, commonly referred to as blue-green algae, in late 2017 through 2018. “I never considered myself an activist before,” she adds. “I’m not one to make waves or go out there creating movements, but this is a way to use what I do to make a difference.” While Knuteson found a way to mobilize her artistic talent for a greater good, there are many other means of getting involved, including volunteering for an ecological organization or educating others on eco-friendly practices. Just as important as the diversity of how people care for the environment is the critical nature of the diversity of the ecosystem itself. “Maintaining diversity of species in coastal wetlands gives resilience during hurricanes,” says Jeff Carter, Rookery Bay’s aquatic preserve manager. This resilience of the coastal wetlands, which are still in post-hurricane recovery, is directly related to the resilience of the economy and the people of Southwest Florida, he adds. The Everglades and the wetlands need human protection, but they in turn help to protect human life and infrastructure from storms and fires.

Everglades Foundation presents Florida-specific science education, advocates for restoration projects, and promotes innovation through a $10 million George Barley Water Prize to address the crisis of increasing phosphorus levels in water, which is due in part to fertilization and agricultural animal waste, shares Steve Davis, Everglades Foundation’s senior ecologist. Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve monitors, protects, and teaches about the estuary, where the rivers meet the sea. “Inspiration comes from connection, and that’s why we try to get as many people out in the reserve as we can by motor boat or kayak,” says Athan Barkoukis, executive director of the Friends of Rookery Bay, which supports the reserve. Over-the-top, personalized decor took center stage at the Naples Zoo’s annual gala, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the zoo’s Tropical Garden. While a pathway lit up in brilliant colors set the stage for the night’s “In the Garden of Eden” theme, it was the elaborate tablescapes that truly stole the show. As part of its sponsorship program, the zoo provided patrons who purchased tables with the opportunity to decorate them according to the theme, meaning guests could showcase their own creative abilities. While some opted for apple trees adorned with hanging candles and miniature crystal chandeliers, others created extravagant floral displays of delicate cherry blossoms and draping orchids. Each table was unique, allowing attendees to marvel at the different designs all night. A golden birdcage filled with roses made for an elegant centerpiece at one table, while a peacock perched on top of a towering stand of greenery commanded attention at another. “Some guests hired professional designers, and some came in and did it themselves,” says Courtney Jolly Goff, the zoo’s director of marketing and public relations. “It was fun to see them in the morning designing their tables and then back in the evening dressed in formal wear.” Since the DIY-inspired decor was such a hit, the zoo’s committee is planning on opening tables for custom decor again for its upcoming gala on November 7, themed “Adventure in South America,” which will support the zoo’s ongoing work with endangered species. —Anna Bjorlin 96
