On the cover We asked readers to play art director and help us choose the cover for the Naples Charity Register. A selection of works from local artists representing a sense of charity and compassion was posted online for consideration. The painting garnering the most votes, The Gift of Life, comes from Naples artist Adorable Monique Olsen. The Honduran-born artist says her paintings gravitate toward the textures and colors of her surroundings. She finds inspiration in nature, tradition, and people, especially women. Olsen encourages people to look for meaning beyond the bold, vibrant palette that’s typical of her work, saying she hopes “they can identify with the noble values of life.”

Passion

e started publishing the Naples Charity Register 17 years ago to fill a community need. As Naples was growing, so were the needs of the less fortunate. The philanthropic spirit and numerous charitable organizations began sprouting up everywhere. Support organizations formed for causes ranging from medical needs, domestic abuse, mental illness, veterans, legal aid, scholarships, and animal shelters to historical and art preservation. We wanted to provide you with a comprehensive guide so that when it was time to decide which organizations you were interested in becoming involved with, you had the information at your fingertips.

In June, I was on the sixth mission of the Collier County Honor Flight, an organization serving veterans in our area. I had the incredible opportunity to spend the day with 84 of the most treasured and respected men and women in the nation—those who risked their lives fighting for our country so that we could all enjoy what we take for granted every day: a culturally diverse, free society.

The local arm of the nonprofit Honor Flight was started by Sean Lux and Debi Strand in 2013. The organization was created solely to honor America’s veterans for their sacrifices. As a guardian volunteer, I spent a day touring the war memorials in our nation’s capital, accompanying veterans from World War II and the Korean War. Senator Bob Dole, a veteran himself, personally greets and talks with each veteran and does not leave, rain or shine, until he has shaken each hero’s hand.

To see these veterans’ faces as they realize the sacrifices they made will always be cherished by this nation is something I hope many more get to witness. My “lucky draw” was to escort Harry Nell, a very humble Korean War Veteran. I look forward to spending more time with Harry throughout the years.

I hope this year’s edition of the Naples Charity Register inspires you to find, as I did, something that lights your charitable fire.

ach year, the Naples area draws successful, well-to-do residents who are lured by the laid-back atmosphere, spectacular weather, sapphire Gulf waters, and emerald golf courses. Look beyond those charms, and the Paradise Coast reveals a sunny spirit of generosity that fills the hearts and minds of its citizens.

One truly attractive thing about Naples is its attitude of neighbors helping neighbors. It’s in that spirit that we publish the annual Naples Charity Register, now in its seventeenth year. With this special publication, we aim to highlight the efforts of local charities to better the lives of every member of our community.

The social season brings an exciting whirl of glamorous galas, fashion shows, over-the-top auctions, dinners, and other great fun. More important than the party itself, though, is the cause that sparked it in the first place. In Cause & Effect (page 30), you’ll find four illustrations of how a good time translates into real help for others.

The many nonprofits in this area didn’t just spring up out of nowhere.

They all grew from the passion of individuals whose persistence and resolve worked wonders. Meet three of these exceptional movers and shakers in “Making Change,” on page 24.

At the inaugural SFH at Germain Arena this summer, Estero resident Autumn Heppner, 10, skated to honor an uncle and her father, Kenneth Heppner, both cancer survivors. “I learned a lot about teamwork, and about bravery,” Autumn says. “I was really excited to have fun and to get to honor my dad and my uncle.”

Kenneth Heppner says, “It brings you to tears, because you are proud and you are just happy to be here. It was a beautiful evening, watching her come out. And they put on such a great show.”

Autumn’s mother, Allison Heppner, adds, “It was a wonderful experience for Autumn, not only getting to raise money for a good cause, but she got to perform in the show and honor people who have been affected by cancer. The whole thing was wonderful, for a kid to be able to do that.”

As a result of the first Florida show, SFH will donate $30,000 to local cancer research and patient support programs, Bongirno proudly says. She would like to do a show every year in Southwest Florida, and hopes her passion will inspire the local community to support the mission.

“I wanted to do something that would allow kids to have some semblance of control and contribution when someone in their life was battling cancer,” Bongirno says. “I never imagined it would raise more than half a million dollars for research. That was a happy byproduct.”

Battling highly aggressive stage-3 breast cancer is scary, as Carolyn Bongirno can personally attest. Yet even in the midst of her illness—or perhaps because of it—she realized that children who are close to someone with cancer are experiencing terrors of their own.

Kids often feel an extreme sense of loss of control.

When Bongirno was diagnosed at age 32, she quit her job as general manager of the RDV Sportsplex in Orlando. She would go back at least once a week and watch the kids skate and hang out with the moms who were her friends.

The children would come and talk to her about how a grandmother, or aunt, or teacher was struggling with cancer. Sitting on a bench talking to a 9-year-old, Bongirno had an epiphany.

“She was tearing up, telling me how terrified she was about her grandmother fighting cancer,” she says. “I knew in that moment I wanted to help kids cope, to do something that would allow kids to have some semblance of control and contribution when someone in their life was battling cancer. I thought, what can I do well? What would I do that would bring joy? I would do an ice show.”

Once her illness was behind her, Bongirno got her nonprofit under way, launching the first Skate for Hope program in 2004 in her home state of Ohio. The show has been held there annually for 10 years. Since moving to Naples two years ago, Bongirno worked hard to bring the SFH debut to Southwest Florida in August at Germain Arena, with 75 local youngsters in the program. It offers figure skaters of all ages at U.S. Figure Skating Basic 3 level and above a chance to skate in a show alongside world-class figure skaters. The participants attend a five-week training period and raise money for cancer charities through a fundraising page. In addition to helping empower children, SFH has also raised $550,000 to date for a number of cancer research organizations.

Weekly rehearsals include health education classes for kids, young adults, and even parents. “We do not know how to prevent cancer,” Bongirno says, “but we do know great health behaviors that reduce risk. SFH is very much about providing kids with health education.”

Bongirno pairs kids whose moms have stage 3 breast cancer with Olympians in the show whose parents have gone through cancer treatment, like Sarah and Emily Hughes and Jeremy Abbott. “We do a Q&A with the cast, and talk about how they dealt with it as a family, what they did to help themselves cope,” Bongirno says.

Show attendees see 13 Olympic and National Champion figure skaters from all around the United States and Canada perform in a fun, inspirational event. The night is dedicated to the cancer survivors in the audience and is a tribute to their strength and courage.

From modest beginnings as a small food pantry and shelter in 1987, St. Matthew’s House has grown remarkably: In 2014 SMH dispensed 7,400 bags of groceries, served 441,000 hot meals, and housed an average of 275 people per night—all without public funding.

Currently the organization operates emergency and transitional housing in Naples and Immokalee, a feeding ministry, Justin’s Place and Wolfe Apartments for recovering addicts, and a food pantry.

How did St. Matthew’s achieve this laudable success?

President and CEO Vann Ellison deserves a great deal of credit. He is on a fervent mission to help people in need while achieving business excellence. Much of the money needed to run SMH’s programs is earned through its social enterprises—six thrift stores, a catering business, and a recently added retreat and conference center, most of those established with Ellison at the helm.

Before being hired as SMH’s president in 2004, Ellison studied to be a minister, went on to serve as a hospital administrator in substance-abuse facilities, and later became the chaplain with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. “I found most of the for-profit hospital business didn’t hit my heart right,” Ellison says. “It was all just about the budget, never about changing people’s lives,” he adds.

When he joined SMH, it was financially fragile, and had just one thrift store. “I looked at the way they were doing things and thought, well, this just isn’t good,” Ellison says. “I started doing some research on how to run a thrift store better.” Within a few weeks they changed the

structure of the operation and started treating donors as though they were customers. “They need a pickup now?

Then we needed to try to get there. So we added a truck,” Ellison says. Sales went up and increased donations could supply two stores, so a second opened in Bonita Springs.

Success built on success. In August SMH opened its sixth store in Fort Myers; it includes SMH’s second Café M25, a partnership with Starbucks that creates job training for SMH residents and brings in more revenue. One of the Naples stores opened the first café in the spring.

Ellison studied other nonprofit organizations that use the free-market system as the underpinning of their financial stability. However, SMH’s businesses couldn’t just be revenue-producing, they had to be consistent with the mission—all the businesses employ program graduates, provide training opportunities for people to learn job skills, and help the poor and less fortunate.

The catering business is another example. “We had a beautiful commercial kitchen, we had people donating food to us, but the food was substandard,” Ellison says.

His plan: find a chef with the right heart to help teach people food skills and establish a catering business. The business pays the chef’s salary, covers the overhead, employs eight full-time staff working in the food-service business doing as many as 30 catering jobs in a week— and it pays for the feeding ministry.

Although these businesses successfully generate sustaining revenue, for Ellison it’s all about transforming lives, and he says, “Justin’s Place is probably the most remarkable success we’ve had.” Because the shelter has a zero-tolerance policy for substance abuse, people who needed the most help had the fewest resources. “Their addiction has taken their employability, their insurability, their financial resources, support from family and friends—all have been stolen,” Ellison says. That led to the creation of Justin’s Place in 2010, a drug and alcohol recovery program in the small, original shelter. To date, more than 200 men and women have graduated from the program, and it has had an 84 percent success rate of them staying sober.

Nick Colosimo is one of those success stories. As a teenager, he got into a lot of trouble with alcohol. “When I was 17 years old,” Colosimo says, “I was drinking and driving, wrecked a vehicle, and my best friend died in the accident.” He met Ellison when he was in jail. Years later, as he continued to struggle with substance abuse, he turned to Ellison at St. Matthew’s House.

“Vann gave me 30 days at the shelter and said, ‘Prove to me that you are ready to change and I’ll move you over to the Wolfe Apartments myself.’ And he did.”

After two years at the Wolfe Apartments, Colosimo got his driver’s license back, and worked out a plan and

a budget. He got a contractor’s license and his own truck, then started a business that now employs eight people.

He’s living proof of SMH’s efficacy. “Through watching the staff, I learned how to volunteer my time to get outside of myself,” Colosimo says. He began giving back, working with a Sheriff’s Office program to keep teenage boys out of prison, and volunteered as a case manager at the SMH shelter. Eventually, he was tapped to be a trustee on the SMH board and was elected to the board of directors about a year ago.

The successful approach led by Ellison continues. SMH took over the Port Labelle Inn in Labelle when the Justin’s Place program outgrew capacity. “We really didn’t want to take this beautiful facility and turn it into just a drug and alcohol program,” says Ellison. “We use it to house men in the

program, but we’re able to do the recovery program in town through a partnership with a couple of churches.”

As a business, the hotel saw a 93 percent occupancy rate during season. At present, SMH is transitioning the inn from a traditional hotel to more of a retreat center as more churches, civic groups, and businesses book it. Moreover, SMH partners with ECHO, an agricultural organization that teaches sustainable farming, which offers men in the recovery program therapeutic benefits from gardening. “It’s taking a guy who feels worthless and giving him something to do,” says Ellison. “We can plant some raised-bed gardens out there. Before long, a guy who’s never done anything worthwhile has produced dinner one night for all the men in the program. He’s building a sense of confidence, getting some exercise and sunlight, and the antidepressant effect of getting things done. Those are recovery skills.”

While it’s clear that Ellison has been able to establish money-generating enterprises, more important is the success of his primary goal: to change the lives of the less fortunate. “There are a lot of things people don’t know about SMH,” says Colosimo. “Watch a man come in broken, homeless, and helpless. St. Matthew’s takes him in and loves him until he can love himself. Then, 30 days later, watch him come back out that gate. You wouldn’t even recognize the man who walked out.”

Fred Franks’ extraordinary military experience ignited the retired U.S. Army four star general’s deep support for our nation’s veterans. Franks’ efforts have been key in establishing a recently launched local program that addresses the invisible wounds of war for post-9/11 veterans in Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Hendry, and Glades counties. Called Home Base Southwest Florida, it is an extension of the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program in Boston. Franks serves as honorary director and senior advisor for the Home Base programs in both Boston and Southwest Florida.

The general’s career and military achievements are legendary, and he is known for collaborating with the late Tom Clancy on the book Into the Storm: On the Ground in Iraq. The 1959 West Point graduate’s tremendous valor earned him the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star with V Device, 43 Air Medals, and two Purple Hearts. While fighting in Cambodia, he was severely wounded, and his left leg was amputated below the knee. That experience is one of the biographical elements included in the book Franks worked on with Clancy.

Despite his injury, Franks fought to remain in a combat unit. He famously led the VII Corps in the decisive attack in Desert Storm in 1991, and earned his fourth star.

The Naples resident may have officially retired, but never rests on his laurels. While being treated for his injury at Valley Forge General Hospital, he developed bonds with fellow soldiers that, he says, “lit a hot blue flame in me, a sense of passion to do whatever I could the rest of my life to make sure the trust that was fractured [between the U.S. military and the public] during [the Vietnam era] was not fractured again. So I am a passionate advocate of wounded warriors.”

Franks’ work with wounded soldiers and studies he did for the U.S. Army led to his association with Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program, which was designed

to help veterans and their families with post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. There’s a natural connection with the Boston Red Sox and Southwest Florida, since the team trains in Fort Myers.

In 2012, Franks established a small fundraiser for the Boston program at Kensington Golf & Country Club in Naples.

Knowing that post-9/11 and Gulf War veterans number more than 4,000 in the five-county region of Southwest Florida, he decided to expand that fundraising effort and create a program here.

The original plan for Southwest Florida was to hold a four-day health and fitness camp in 2014 for local veterans. The overwhelming support of Kensington members and from around the Naples community convinced Franks and the Home Base team to do something bigger.

That’s when the Home Base Southwest Florida Warrior Health and Fitness plan was created. Florida Gulf Coast University agreed to donate the health and fitness facilities, and the organization tapped a marine corps veteran and native of Naples, Armando Hernandez, to direct the program.

“Armando picked it up and ran with the mission,” says Franks.

“Having had his own difficulties reintegrating to civilian life, he discovered that exercise, fitness, and proper nutrition made him feel better. So he included fitness routines and other forms of wellness, such as sleep and nutrition.”

In addition to exercise, nutrition, and stress management help, the six-month program holds group events with veterans in a variety of settings, because, Hernandez says, veterans miss the camaraderie they had in the military. For this reason, it was vital to create a sense of community.

in March 2015,” Franks says. “We presented the class with certificates of completion on the field, and that began with great enthusiasm the program for our own veterans in the five-county area.”

A second group entered the program in May, and a third in September. The goal is to serve up to 60 veterans per year.

As word spreads, the program is reaching more and more veterans while community support also grows. The fourth annual event at Kensington in February 2015 brought together local veterans and families with supporters for a full weekend of raising funds and awareness. It included a reception, auction, and speeches by decorated military heroes who spoke of their experiences with post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury.

The next Kensington event, March 12, 2016, will include golf fivesomes—a regular foursome and a veteran in each group.

Franks and his network of supporters also plan a gala on April 9 at Kensington.

“I am very proud to be a host and chair of our committee, and to see that kind of enthusiasm to establish this program here in Southwest Florida for our veterans who earned it,” says Franks. But he is quick to emphasize that the success is a team effort involving Kensington’s board, members, and staff, as well as the Naples community—including the local veterans’ agencies, county officials, and the Sheriff’s Office. “I leaned as a commander in the military that teams working together, moving in the same direction, is what matters, and that’s what we have here,” he says.

“The positive statements of those who have graduated, along with Armando’s enthusiastic support of the program, lend great credibility to the positive effect that the program is having on our veterans’ lives. It’s a way of fulfilling that trust between those who have served and sacrificed so courageously for us all.”

From a Moroccan-themed beach party to aid abused and neglected children, to a magical gala amid the mangroves that funds regional wildlife initiatives, there are myriad exciting ways to contribute. These soirees create good times to remember as they bring awareness and dollars to nonprofits’ missions.

Good Time: The Beach Ball

Good Deed: The Children’s Advocacy Center Programs As Naples is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, few charity events celebrate the stunning beachfront setting like the annual Beach Ball, the signature fundraising event of the Children’s Advocacy Center.

Collier County’s only immediate-response facility for children who need to be removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect, the CAC acts as both a nurturing refuge and an advocacy agency that helps these children and their families navigate the legal processes. Proceeds from the Beach Ball support the center’s advocacy services and therapy programs, which help more than 2,200 children annually.

Each year, the event theme transports guests to a different famous beach, where they enjoy a far-flung region’s unique culture and cuisine without leaving town. “It’s not the biggest event in town, but I think the people who attend it really enjoy the casual, fun atmosphere,” says CAC’s CEO Jackie Stephens, who created many of the center’s programs and helped launch the first Beach Ball. “We like to keep it lighthearted and really weave the flavor of the region into everything we do.”

With an unsurpassed turnout and generous bids on both silent and live auction items, the most recent Beach Ball set a record, raising more than $200,000 for the center and exceeding last year’s total by nearly 30 percent. With the Beach Ball twentieth anniversary slated for 2016, the CAC is looking forward to its most successful and spectacular party yet.

“The money really goes to our programs and directly affects the kids,” Stephens says. “A lot of the funding goes toward our advocacy services.

Our advocates visit elementary schools, support children through forensic interviews and medical exams, and provide practical and legal help to the child and family so they can better heal from trauma.”

As a male-centric event, the Tailgate Party is a manly day of golf, barbecue, and games, but the mission it supports teaches boys the true meaning of being a man, with the aim to eliminate domestic violence before it starts.

Good Time: The Gentle’men Against Domestic Violence Tailgate Party Good Deed: The Raising Gentle’men Program

While there are hundreds of local charities, nonprofits, and opportunities to get involved, few Naples groups are as distinctive as the Gentle’men Against Domestic Violence. The GADV supports The Shelter for Abused Women & Children through the Raising Gentle’men Program, an eightweek course dedicated to preventing domestic violence before it begins.

The GADV began in 2008 with a luncheon, then evolved into the tailgate party it celebrates now. More than 150 men attended the 2015 party at Bay Colony Golf Club, where they enjoyed a few games of golf, a barbecue, a cigar lounge, and a live auction. Lieutenant Mark Wynn, a child survivor of domestic violence, shared his story as the event’s keynote speaker.

“As far as charity events and fundraisers go, the tailgate party is very different. It is very relaxed, there are no tuxedos, and it ends around 8:30 p.m.,” says Ron Ciesla, who chaired the committee for 2015. “And I think part of what makes this event so special is that it’s exclusively for men. We’re not trying to be exclusionary to women, but we feel it’s 32

important to show the young men in the community that the adult men are invested in this cause and want to transfer their gentlemanly qualities to the youth of the community—and hopefully become a model for the country.”

In the most recent tailgate party, the men of GADV raised more than $300,000, which will be used to support the program’s two male advocates who work in Naples and Immokalee. During the 2014-2015 school year, these advocates conducted 187 Raising Gentle’men presentations that reached 3,236 young men and boys in Collier County.

“They [the advocates] go through both theory and practical exercises to reach the young men and boys early on and teach them about healthy relationships and being gentlemen,” says Tamika Seaton, senior development officer at The Shelter, “before that whole psyche and attitude sets in—the one that says you have to be aggressive and dominant to be considered manly or macho.”

The gala proceeds support the Wildlife Hospital, education programs, sea turtle and other research initiatives, the Nature Center, and more.

Good Time: Magic Under the Mangroves Good Deed: Conservancy of Southwest Florida Initiatives

Few events celebrate Naples’ vibrant colors, unique fauna, and lush tropical landscape like the annual Magic Under the Mangroves, the signature fundraiser of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.

The gala, which has grown to become one of the top charitable events in Southwest Florida, features a lavish dinner and auction to raise money for the Conservancy’s 50-year-old mission of protecting the area’s water, land, and diverse wildlife. Since 2005, the event has raised more than $8.2 million to preserve the local environment for future generations.

“Magic Under the Mangroves is really quite amazing,” says Lynne Shotwell, a lifelong Conservancy supporter who served as the chair for 2015. “We have it at the Conservancy Nature Center, and it’s very special, because it brings everyone to our campus and many people don’t know where that is.”

The elegant, eco-chic celebration is as enchanting as its name, taking place under an enormous tent erected just for the occasion. The party organizers fittingly use renewable resources and sustainable practices,

ranging from bamboo, potato starch fabric, and other materials, to food prepared by a green-certified restaurant.

“This year was particularly magical, because we were in the final three or four hours of setting up when a huge storm came through with tornado warnings and everything,” Shotwell says. “The party was set to start at 5 p.m., so we were getting a little nervous. Then 15 minutes beforehand, it stopped raining, the sky cleared, the air was fresh, and it was absolutely beautiful.”

The more than 420 guests raised $1.3 million to help fund key initiatives, such as sea-turtle tracking and wildlife rehabilitation at The von Arx Wildlife Hospital, along with environmental advocacy and education programs, summer camp scholarships, and an internship program.

“It really is a spectacular evening. It grows from the ground up on the campus as a wonderful party but is also a teaching tool, and people love it,” Shotwell says. “We could hardly get them into the dining tent because they were so interested in the sea-turtle monitoring and other exhibits we had set up.”

Good Deed: Renovations to the NCH William and Susan Dalton Oncology Unit One of the fanciest, most impressive events of the charity season is the NCH Healthcare System Foundation’s biennial Magnolia Ball.

Since its foundation in 2001, the soiree has raised nearly $7 million designated specifically for cancer-related care. For the latest ball, husband-andwife duo Scott and Simone Lutgert co-chaired the event at the beachfront estate of Sandra and Alan Gerry. Scott Lutgert’s family has been a strong supporter of NCH over the years, with his late father, Raymond, providing funding for the Lutgert Cancer Pavilion.

“Each year, the ball is a little different, and each chairperson puts her own stamp on it,” says Simone Lutgert, who helped design the decor and plan the menu. “It has always been an ode to the South, but it’s always been a little old-fashioned, so this year I wanted to put a contemporary twist on it while still keeping its traditional Southern flair.”

Nearly 300 guests clad in crisp white tuxedos and elegant gowns attended the event, a magnificent evening of Southern charm, generosity, and hospi34

tality that began with a cocktail reception overlooking the Gulf of Mexico followed by dinner, a formal promenade, and dancing.

In recent years, funds from the Magnolia Ball were used to launch outpatient infusion centers, open a women’s breast health center, and support general technology purchases. This year, the $1.4 million raised will go toward special improvements and renovations to the William and Susan Dalton Oncology Unit at the downtown campus, where patrons will see precisely what their donations have accomplished when the unit opens next fall.

“We’re renovating the 23-bed unit to make it more comfortable for patients and their families since many of them spend 30 to 60 days in the unit,” says Julie Pedretti, director of development for the foundation. “We want to make the rooms a little warmer to promote a calming environment and encourage healing, as well as give them opportunities to break away and go to a resource center where they can meditate. We’d also like to implement some holistic-type services, such as aromatherapy, massages, or even yoga.”

John and Georgia DallePezze

After nearly a decade of involvement with The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, Naples residents John and Georgia DallePezze have witnessed firsthand the heartbreaking aftermath of domestic violence. The organization offers emergency shelter and transitional housing for women and children who have been affected by domestic violence.

Georgia first became involved with the Shelter in 2005 when she joined The Shelter Guild, a group of about 50 women advocates. The following year, Georgia served as president of the Guild. For several years, John has supported the Gentle’men Against Domestic Violence, which hosts an annual event to raise awareness among boys and young men.

Throughout the years, the DallePezzes have contributed several hundred thousand dollars to The Shelter, funds that have helped support the Shelter from the Storm Luncheon, the Monarch Society, the annual Gentle’men Against Violence fundraiser, and the Mending Broken Hearts with Hope Luncheon.

Reid Carpenter

For more than 50 years, Reid Carpenter has dedicated himself to helping others. He spent his early 20s focused on volunteer outreach to gang members in Hell’s Kitchen in New York.

The turning point in his life came in 1961, when he met Sam Shoemaker, the Episcopal priest who inspired Alcoholics Anonymous.

In 1978, Carpenter established the Leadership Foundation, a nonprofit that now has 74 chapters nationwide. Carpenter’s organization seeks to connect and support others who are already doing good work in many areas, such as 46 NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

The foundation’s local chapter partners with community groups on several initiatives to help at-risk kids, including leadership training, career planning, and financial literacy education. The kids also learn how to give back. Since October 2013, dozens of high school student volunteers have packed more than 100,000 meals for Meals of Hope, a nonprofit that supplies healthy meals to families in need.

Alan and Beverley Horton

Alan and Beverley Horton know the power of education firsthand. Together, they have spent nearly 50 years committed to ensuring children receive a quality education.

The Hortons came to Naples in 1987, when Alan became editor of the Naples Daily News.

Beverley served as a substitute teacher at Naples High School, where she began a mentoring program that continues today. Understanding that the best communities are those that invest in their children, Alan became a founding member of the Education Foundation (which is now known as Champions for Learning).

In 2009, Alan launched Connect Now, an initiative to bring the public into educational decisions and discover what parents wanted from their schools. The couple’s dedication earned them honors with the Golden Apple award in 2012. Alan is a former chair of the Community Foundation of Collier County and served as a senior adviser for Champions for Learning, focused on school readiness and early education.

When Karla and Larry Phillips’ son, Andrew, 37, was diagnosed with a mental illness nearly nine years ago, their world changed.

Seasonal residents of Naples since 2001, the family moved here permanently in 2010. Eager to find a community of support, they discovered the Collier County chapter of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and were immediately embraced by the staff’s extraordinary kindness.

For nearly five years, the Phillipses have donated their time and money to various NAMI programs, including the Sarah Ann Drop-In Center, which provides a safe and welcoming environment for people with serious mental illnesses to socialize, relax, exercise, and participate in group outings. since 2004, witnessed the David Lawrence Foundation’s impact on the community, they didn’t think twice about becoming involved.

The foundation provides financial help for the David Lawrence Center, which offers mental health, behavioral health, and substanceabuse services.

Since 2007, the two have contributed significant funds to the foundation. They have also provided in-kind donations for the auction at its annual fundraising gala.

In 2011, the couple served as honorary cochairs of the gala, and they continue to serve on the gala committee. Art is currently chairman of the foundation’s board of trustees, member of the center’s board of directors, chair of the development committee, and member of the executive committee. The couple also continues to work behind the scenes, determined to sustain the organization’s momentum to foster the ripple effect throughout the community.

Over the last 16 years, Doug Campbell has been a persistent advocate for abused and neglected children in Collier County. He began as a guardian ad litem, protecting the interests of children in the court system—many of whom end up in the foster care system. His involvement led him to discover Friends of Foster Children of Southwest Florida, which provides foster children with the social, educational, and financial support not offered by the state.

Through his Campbell Family Foundation, the Naples resident has also donated more than $100,000 over the last few years to FFC, and has made other financial contributions to several charities.

FFC’s Project Enrichment program provides the children an opportunity to go to summer camp, play sports, and participate in other activities, which Campbell says is “a big deal,” and helps to promote a stable and safe environment where kids can be kids.

Insight: “The more you learn, the more op-

portunities you see to do something to improve a fairly ugly situation,” Campbell says. “You do what you can, and keep doing it, until you’ve accomplished something.” —Teri Evans

Don Fites and Joyce Hagen

Education brought Naples residents Don Fites and Joyce Hagen together, and their mutual passion for education has guided their philanthropic involvement with The Immokalee Foundation.

When Fites visited the nonprofit’s Immokalee Technical Center, he saw an opportunity to help train young people to work with heavy equipment. He helped launch The Immokalee Foundation’s Heavy Equipment Technicians Program in 2010. Fites also contributed funds through his Fites Family Charitable Trust, and worked to secure collaboration with the Caterpillar Foundation, Kelly Tractor (a Caterpillar dealer), and the District School Board of Collier County, which owns the facility.

The two-year program has yielded about 25 graduates to date, all now employed. It is just one of several ways the foundation assists underprivileged children of Immokalee with Joyce Hagen and Don Fites

education, vocational training, and life skills.

At the 2014 Immokalee Foundation Charity Classic Celebration, Fites contributed $200,000 in a matching fund to incentivize other donors at the annual fundraiser. His wife, Joyce Hagen, served as chair of the event.

Insight: “It’s about looking at the individual needs of the kids and being there with resources along the way,” says Hagen. —T.E.

Fred Klaucke

To many local families with someone stricken by cancer, Fred Klaucke is a blessing. In 2008 his wife, Laura, passed away from lung and brain cancer. He discovered Cancer Alliance of Naples shortly afterwards and was immediately drawn in.

Klaucke takes low-income families served

by CAN on shopping trips to their local WalMart Supercenter to buy whatever they need, including food, household supplies, clothing, and more. At the end of each shopping trip, he buys flowers for the ladies. Through Cancer Alliance of Naples and a variety of other local nonprofits, Klaucke has helped about 500 families through these shopping trips over the last few years. He has also sponsored CAN’s retreat program, which pays for 10 families to enjoy a three-day vacation at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club.

Insight: “The more you give, the more you receive,” Klaucke says. “Everyone can do something. It doesn’t matter if we’re rich or poor, there’s always someone who needs help more than we do.” —T.E.

Bill and Doreen Dean

For some time, Bill and Doreen Dean have been committed to helping combat cancer.

The longtime seasonal residents of Marco Island have been entrenched in the Marco Island American Cancer Society. Aside from financial contributions, the Deans also often volunteer to take cancer patients to their treatments—and those are among the most poignant moments, especially when there’s a good outcome.

As chairman of the Hideaway Chips Away at Cancer committee, Bill led fundraising efforts that raised $1 million. In 2009, he joined the

board of Marco Island ACS. In 2015 the couple received the Marco Island ACS’s Grado Award, which recognizes service and commitment to the American Cancer Society.

Insight: “It’s a great feeling to be able to help people and know the programs the American Cancer Society sets up are funded by what we do—and hopefully funding a lot of research to try and kill this disease,” says Doreen, who lost two aunts to cancer. “It has been very rewarding.” —T.E.

Tim and Sharon Ubben

Tim Ubben and his wife, Sharon, prefer to concentrate their considerable donations on a limited number of nonprofits so that they can remain meaningfully engaged in each one. The couple became seasonal residents of Naples in 2000, but had been vacationing in the area since 1985. Early in 2015 the couple presented a $10 million endowment gift to the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, which serves 3,000 kids aged 6 to 18 in after-school programs. It was the largest donation in the history of the BGCCC. The couple has been generously supporting the BGCCC since 2003, and Tim has served on the board since 2007. The return on the endowment will help fund a new building in Immokalee, support operations, and create a scholarship fund.

The Ubbens are also longtime charitable supporters of Artis—Naples, which Tim calls the “cultural gem of Southwest Florida.”

Insight: “While it probably won’t happen,” Tim says, “we’d love it if the last check we ever wrote was to the undertaker, and it bounced.” —T.E.

Whether you’re attending your first gala or you’re a regular on the party circuit, follow our tips from A to Z to navigate season on the Paradise Coast with finesse

Donate. After all, your generosity is the real reason for Arrive 15 minutes after the event is intended to start. It’s the ideal “fashionably late” time: just early enough to ensure the party is under way and not too late that you miss any of the fun (or guests are too absorbed to notice your grand entrance).

There are some unbelievable gifts to be had, from coveted jewelry and wine to oncein-a-lifetime experiences. Plus, it’s a winwin: You get a fantastic prize, while the money goes to a deserving cause.

Compliment the chair or party host on organizing a fabulous event. Make this an in-person priority before the night is over, but if you know the organizer particularly well, be sure to also follow up with a thank-you card sent in the mail expressing your appreciation.

Gossip always happens in the bathroom—and that’s exactly where it should stay. Keep it behind closed doors.

Hair styling should be left to the professionals—the night of a gala is not the time to experiment with a new ’do. Book an appointment at Philip Douglas Salon well in advance; his chairs are the hottest seats in town during season.

Invite a plus-one. (Be sure to RSVP for two.) It’s easier to mingle when you have a wingman or woman. Plus, a dynamic duo always makes for better pictures.

Join in the conversation. Use your small-talk skills to get to know your tablemates. Always-appropriate topics include travel, current events, your affiliation with the charity, and who’s wearing what, as long as it’s stated in a complimentary way. Off limits: whatever you overheard in the bathroom.

Know the organization you’re supporting. If you’re not totally familiar with it, do some research beforehand to understand where your money is going. Being a knowledgeable guest is socially expected, as well as respectful to the nonprofit.

Limit your intake: No more than two drinks during cocktail hour and two during dinner. Anything more and you’ll be the talk of the town for the wrong reasons.

Manicures must be done, so book a signature nail treatment at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples Spa. And if you plan to wear open-toe shoes, don’t dare leave the salon without a pedicure. Your final look should be spoton, literally from head to toe.

Network—especially during cocktail hour, when you can socialize

with anyone, not just your own table guests. Bring business cards to swap at strategic moments, and have a prepared simple answer to the ever-popular question, “What do you do?”

Order special menu requests in advance. Don’t wait until the server is delivering your filet mignon to mention your vegetarian lifestyle or a recent shift to a gluten-free diet. State your preferences when you RSVP.

Position yourself strategically at all times. During the cocktail hour, stand between the entrance and the bar so you’ll be in the middle of the action as well as approachable. During dinner, if you turn to talk to the guest next to you, keep your body language open so others can join in.

Quiet—refrain from talking when the speakers are. They are there for 52

an important purpose and deserve your full attention and respect. Discreet shushing of others who are not abiding by this rule is acceptable and, in some cases, laudable.

Review the social section of Naples Illustrated—you just might spot your face among the photos. Be sure to display the magazine on your coffee table as a light reading suggestion, perhaps with your page dogeared (not that you noticed, of course).

Swag bags are amazing takeaways, so don’t leave without one. Not crazy about the goodies? Give them to someone who didn’t attend the event who will appreciate them—this is one instance of regifting that’s actually acceptable.

Themes are popular, so expect to dress the part for the event— just don’t over- or underdo it. When in doubt, look up photos of last year’s event. If you can’t find any, women should slip on a black dress and men should don a tux—you’ll never go wrong with these classic looks.

Unique touches are what make you stand out, so personalize your style with a monogram clutch (Monogrammed Goods has some pretty options), or a favorite statement necklace. Just relax and be yourself confidently in all forms, from the way you dress to the conversations you have with other guests. Be memorable for being you.

Valets always take a while, so consider sharing a ride to help reduce the time. If it’s an appropriate moment to exit (meaning: not while a speaker is talking), leave the event around 10 p.m. to be one of the first in line.

Walk around in those new Jimmy Choos before actually wearing them to the gala. You’ll need to be able to move gracefully and without pain by the end of the night, so choose footwear that’s both stylish and comfortable—then practice that strut.

Xtra essentials like lipstick, bobby pins, and mints (not gum) are necessary for looking your best all night, so keep them on you—and offer to share when appropriate. Your polite gesture could score you a new acquaintance or accolades from top influencers.

Your calendar should be full of a variety of events— not just black-tie galas, but also themed parties, food and wine festivals, and intriguing speaking engagements. Aim for a scope of experiences.

Zzz’s are necessary to survive the social season. Get some beauty sleep, because you’ll need the energy to take on the next gala—it’s right around the corner.

Friends of Fakahatchee The Friends of Fakahatchee is a not-for-profit citizen support organization founded in 1998. It provides financial and volunteer support to preserve the unique ecology and cultural heritage of Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, and to educate the public about its importance.

Children learn the history of Southwest Florida best by experiencing the lifelike exhibits at the five Collier County museums. We assist with educational and fun activities, such as the Old Florida Festival in March. The NCH Healthcare Foundation is the fundraising arm of NCH Healthcare System, a nonprofit community hospital that receives no direct taxpayer, county, or government support. The Clinic provides medical and dental care to low-income, working, uninsured Collier County adults using a professional volunteer staff and funded by private philanthropy.

Services are provided in a caring environment that respects the dignity of each person. It offers specialty clinics for patients that include cardiology, dermatology, lipids, urology, neurology, and hepatology. More than 250 physicians and dentists volunteer their time to serve the patients.

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Seacrest Country Day School is a preschool through grade 12 collegepreparatory, independently funded school that fuels intellectual engagement, teaches ownership of the educational experience, cultivates quality of character, and inspires students to lead lives of significance.

The Shelter for Abused Women & Children is leading the community to “Prevent, Protect, and Prevail” over domestic violence and human trafficking through advocacy, empowerment, and social change. The Shelter operates a 60-bed emergency shelter and seven transitional living cottages with capacity to house 42 participants; it also provides outreach services, training, and education throughout Collier County with offices in Naples and Immokalee.
