FROM THE PUBLISHER

BELIEVE IN MAGIC elcome to the 2009-10 edition of the Naples Charity Register. If you agree with the philosophy that generosity begins at home, this will be an invaluable resource for you. This is a comprehensive guide to the charitable organizations serving Southwest Florida as well as their fundraising events through October 2010. We created the Charity Register 11 years ago as a way to help you plan your benevolent giving over a 12-month period. This year’s edition, however, might have more importance than any previous, as the turbulent economy continues to affect nonprofit organizations from coast to coast in unprecedented ways. In the last year alone, national charitable giving dropped by nearly 6 percent after decades of growth, reflecting the steepest decline since 1956, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Here on Florida’s west coast, we might not be able to change the national picture entirely by ourselves, but we certainly can—and should—make a tremendous impact on the local landscape. As you consider the personal circumstances that allow you to support worthy causes year-round, we hope you’ll be inspired to create some magic locally. This, in fact, is the theme of this year’s Charity Register. Our editors and art directors have collaborated to create an exceptional presentation from cover to cover, with stunning photography and illustrations that serve as visual inspiration for the magic you can bring to others’ lives. You’ll also find useful, important information about a wide array of nonprofit organizations for your review, listed in these pages and on our website, naplesillustrated.com. As an advocate of many of them, we have seen how even the simplest efforts can have a significant impact, and we encourage you to experience it for yourself. And it goes without saying that we share this belief with the advertisers who are demonstrating their support for these worthy causes—and the community at large—by helping make this resource possible. No matter which charities are among your favorites, please remember that each organization included in the Charity Register deserves your careful deliberation. Your benevolence helps them meet their financial needs, and that is especially critical today. We wish you a magical year of giving.

to benefit

Visit www.naplesmusicfestival.org for event information and if interested in becoming a sponsor, call the Garden of Hope and Courage at 239.434.6697.

Tickets Go On Sale - January 2010

The Garden of Hope and Courage located on the downtown campus of the NCH Healthcare System is a healing sanctuary and memorial for Jan Emfield who passed away from breast cancer in 1994. It is inspired by Jan’s great courage as well as all whose lives have been affected by this horrific disease. Jan recognized both the physical and emotional healing benefits that a peaceful garden could provide for patients, families and health care providers. The proceeds from the Naples Music Festival will directly support the on-going care of the garden.
