HELLO SUMMER #gettighter2020!

Is beauty only skin deep? Dr. Linda Gordon argues otherwise. She provides her clients with a unique approach to their health, utilizing 30 years of counseling in vascular risk plus years of training in facial aesthetics. Feeling good about your appearance affects your confidence, and it has been proven to improve your mood and overall well-being. She argues that when people are happy about their appearance, they feel less stress, and that may translate to a healthier environment inside the body. Wellness is the focus of Tighter Lines Aesthetics, and that includes both the outside appearance and the inner health of the heart and vasculature.

Editor’s note

Strange days, indeed

©LILA PHOTO

O

ne thing that has been helping me through these crazy times is music. It’s always been my go-to, when I’m stressed, when I’m scared, when I’m sad, and when I’m happy. And lately, I can’t get John Lennon’s “Nobody Told Me” out of my head. Nobody told us there’d be days like these. And these are some strange days, indeed. We are all doing our best to keep our chins up and keep on keeping on, despite many losing their jobs, falling ill, and even saying good-bye to loved ones. What else can we do? “Social distancing” entered our vocabulary barely three months ago, yet the term now rolls off of our tongues as if we’ve been saying it our entire lives. Unfortunately, many of us never paid as much attention as we should have to just how lucky we were to be in good health. This month’s cover model, Joe Namath, may have said it best: “Our health is our most taken for granted luxury.” He wasn’t referring to COVID-19 (when we interviewed him months back, the crisis hadn’t fully set in just yet); he was talking about his own injuries sustained throughout his football career. But his words are poignant nonetheless and, as it turns out, somewhat prophetic. We thank Joe for sharing his life story with us, which you can read beginning on page 34. This issue is also filled with lots of wellness-related content: Get advice from a local expert gardener on what herbs you can grow at home now to help prevent illness (page 30), find out the truth about certain nutrition “myths” (page 28), and learn how practicing mindfulness meditation can keep your mind and body strong during these trying times (page 46). Plus, while the world may be officially “closed,” it won’t be forever. So we also keep you posted on a few things that are happening in the area in terms of arts and culture, local businesses, and more. We know the hard-hit restaurant sector will come back, hopefully as robust as ever. And we urge everyone to support these establishments as much as you can. We did our best to update the “Flavor” section (page 85) to reflect those restaurants continuing to offer takeout and curbside pickup during the pandemic. Also, many area organizations have generously begun offering free virtual programs to keep us all entertained, and we highlight a few of them on page 21. Stay strong, everyone. We will get through these strange days—together. Peace and blessings,

rom songwriter/Broadway actor Clifton Davis to a couple of the founding members of American jazz fusion band Spyro Gyra, you never know who might show up at Rick Moore’s jazz sessions. Organized by the Jupiter Jazz and Performing Arts Society—founded by Moore and his wife, Cherie, in 2012—the jams take place at Double Roads Tavern on the last Sunday of every month. Impromptu energy abounds as young musicians show up to improvise with the Bossa Jazz ensemble, led by Moore. The sessions touch on all types of jazz: traditional, Latin, bebop, mainstream, and avant-garde. “It’s American music, a part of our culture,” Moore says. “Over the years, it has changed so much. We try to present all styles so we can attract an all-ages audience.” A jazz pianist who grew up in New Jersey, Moore says he started the nonprofit organization to preserve jazz as an American art form and nurture interest and talent in youth. Teens from the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach often showcase their talents during jams, and the organization

22

raises funds for the nonprofit JazzPath, which provides lessons to youth even if they can’t afford lessons or an instrument. When he moved to Florida in 1986, Moore—whose uncle founded the New Jersey Jazz Society in 1972—started playing long-term engagements at upscale venues like the International Polo Club in Wellington, The Mar-a-Lago Club 5 in Palm Beach, and the Jupiter Island Club in Hobe Sound. But he noticed there was a distinct absence of live jazz at Jupiter-area bars and restaurants. “There was no jazz anywhere,” he recalls. “So instead of trying to go out and get gigs, I decided to promote jazz itself and the people who like it—to build a community. [The society] is not about the music per se but about the

community that loves the music.” That community stays connected through an e-newsletter, which is sent out about twice a month to more than 1,500 subscribers. The group’s president, Cathleen Scott, originally got involved to support her son, Dylan Thomas, 19, who played in his high school jazz band and began performing at Double Roads in 2015. Her husband also plays guitar and sings, and she embraces opening new doors for underserved children so they can tap into new opportunities by honing their creative expression through jazz. “Music can be a way out,” Scott says. “A lot of the kids may be talented but don’t know they are talented. [The society and JazzPath] offer a way to open kids up to opportunities they couldn’t reach before.” v facebook.com/jupiterjazzsociety; to receive notifications about schedule updates, sign up for the Jupiter Jazz Society newsletter by emailing jupiterjazzsociety@gmail.com

STRENGTH

Strength. A powerful element in fighting breast cancer. When champion kart racer, Neil Breitenbach, felt a sharp pain in his chest, he never expected to be diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. From his very first consultation with Florida Cancer Specialists, he knew he was in the best place he could be. His care team put him at ease — listening to every question and laying out a personalized treatment plan — and they’ve been fighting together ever since. In Neil’s mind, racing and fighting cancer have a lot in common. Both can be very hard. Both require dedication and the willingness to push yourself to your limits. But with the right team of oncologists, targeted treatments and clinical expertise, great outcomes can happen. “My team at Florida Cancer Specialists is confident and caring. They always make me feel like everything is going to be okay.”

silver 1971 Airstream Safari trailer has set up shop here near the railroad tracks. The vehicle isn’t just camping out; it’s a coffee shop. The Lokomotive, as it’s named, belongs to Johnathon “JP” Pezzino and his girlfriend, Sydney Jacobson, who had an idea to serve brews out of their vintage Airstream. They originally parked their business just a few blocks away, at 312 Center Street, last September. Moving to the current location was a natural progression, as Pezzino’s family purchased the

Pezzino says drinks are made traditionally and without artificial sweeteners or syrups—cappuccino, Americano, macchiato, espresso, drip coffee, and a small variety of lattes. They also serve croissants, classic or with Nutella, but they don’t plan on expanding the food options much further. “We want to focus on what we’re good at, and that’s the coffee,” says Pezzino. The old-school approach continues with the trailer, from its original, ’70s chrome exterior to an interior decked out in a cypress ceiling and western red cedar countertops, giving a cozy atmosphere

to the shop’s “micro lounge.” “We think of it as a ‘coffee encounter,’” Pezzino says of imbibing in the indoor space. Patrons can enjoy their drinks on the custom-made couch that wraps around the trailer booth-style, with a small wooden table in the center. Pezzino and Jacobson started brewing coffee around six years ago in their kitchen in Jupiter, letting family and friends sample it to help perfect their craft. “When we’re not working, all we do is go home and study and learn more about [brewing coffee],” says Pezzino. “We’re really stoked every single day to be doing this.” The couple also has plans to take over Ferro Via and eventually open the location as a “specialty vendors

market” (around the end of the year, they estimate). “It will be kind of like what we’re doing with the coffee shop but bringing that customer service and quality to other avenues like fresh fish and veggies, a bakery… just the classic market style,” says Pezzino. The expansion is a natural extension of The Lokomotive—and gives new meaning to that mural on Ferro Via’s wall. Pezzino explains: “The steam locomotive pulls the rest of the cars; they don’t go anywhere without it. So

Clockwise from top left: view of the railroad from inside The Lokomotive; latte art; freshly brewed espresso.

The Lokomotive is the first part of our business, pulling the rest in tow. rowing up in Westchester, New York, Dana Cavalea worshipped the New York Yankees. “I used to sit up in the nosebleed section with my father dreaming of what it would be like to be on the field,” says Cavalea, who moved to Jupiter in 2019. “Ultimately, I knew my talent was good enough to play in college, but it wasn’t good enough to play at Yankee Stadium. So I said, ‘Well, I can become a coach.’” In 2002, the Yankees’ head strength coach was in town for spring training and needed an intern. It was Cavalea’s golden opportunity. “They threw a lanyard around my neck and put me in Yankees gear,” he recalls. “My mind was blown because some of my heroes were on that field, and there I was in the middle of it with them.” He quickly moved up the ranks and became the team’s director of strength, conditioning, and performance in charge of keeping the athletes in prime playing shape. The best part of the gig, he says, was the comradery: “The amount of pranksters and jokers and daily belly laughs… You can’t match that anywhere else.”

26

Coach Cavalea with Alex Rodriguez

While Cavalea was with the team, the Yankees won the 2009 World Series. “It was amazing because as a kid, I was watching them win all those years,” he says. “Then I was there, in those Champagne baths, partying like a rock star.” In 2014, Cavalea decided to shift to the business sector. His thought at the time, he says, was: “When you’ve worked with the best, stop there. I had a great brand I’d be associated with for life, and I didn’t want to put anything between that.” He took all the great lessons he had learned throughout his career in sports and began teaching businesses “how to create a team-driven culture as opposed to just a leaderdriven culture.” He brings his wisdom to international conferences and consults for teams, universities, and corporations. He has also written a book on the topic, Habits of a Champion.

“People want you to care about them, invest in them, and help them see a path they may not see for themselves,” Cavalea says. “In coaching, you take people for who they are but also find out where they want to go and help them understand why they haven’t been able to get there. When you put that whole story together for somebody, you can really light a fire.” ❖ danacavalea.com

CAVALEA’S TOP TIPS THREE BITS OF ADVICE TO PERFORM WELL IN ANY FACET OF LIFE ADJUST YOUR MINDSET: Don’t wait for [outside influences] to provide what you need. You need to say, “I bring the room what it needs.” UNPLUG TO CONNECT: People spend very little time disconnected [from their devices], yet their number-one complaint is a lack of [human] connections. WORK YOUR ENERGY: Make it a part of your day to go out and be a positive influence on somebody. If you’re putting good energy in, you’re going to get good energy out.

Nutrition Myths Debunked

GET THE FACTS ON FIVE FOOD FALSEHOODS b y M E G A N AY S C U E

Registered dietician and nutritionist Lee Cotton (below) stresses the importance of eating a variety of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats to maintain a healthy diet. Fish, fruits, and veggies are always a good choice.

T

he internet can spread information quickly, including a lot of untruths. And that can be dangerous when it comes to nutrition. Lee Cotton, a registered dietician and nutritionist at Therapeutic Oasis in Jupiter, gets to the bottom of some common misconceptions.

1

MYTH: Keto, paleo, low-fat, and other “fad diets” are the way to go. FACT: For healthy individuals, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats are extremely important. We need protein for growth and repair. Carbohydrates—which aren’t just breads and pastas but fruits and vegetables too—give us glucose we need for our brain to function. Fat is extremely important because it cushions all of our organs, helps with neurological function, and, depending on the type of fat, can be preventative in terms of cardiovascular disease. When we go on a fad diet and take out one of these three macronutrients, there is a possibility for a deficiency that can lead to long-term health consequences. Of course, if you have a certain medical issue, you should be assessed by a doctor to learn what is best for you.

28

2

MYTH: Fresh is always better than frozen. FACT: Fresh produce is great, but if you’re only able to purchase frozen vegetables for your family, that’s also a good thing. Frozen produce is just “flash-frozen.” The nutrients are still there.

3

MYTH: It’s good to cleanse your body by detoxing with a juice or other type of cleanse regularly. FACT: “Detox” is one of the hype words in the health world. But the cool thing about our bodies is that we have a liver and kidneys that work through everything. If you’re giving your body the balanced nutrition that it needs, getting proper sleep, and enough exercise, your body has a wonderful way of detoxing itself and getting rid of things every single day. 5 MYTH: Food always gives you all the nutrients you need. FACT: I believe in food first, but there are times where the body or the immune system is a bit suppressed, and a supplement is important to bridge that nutritional gap. For instance, a person with osteoporosis needs more calcium and vitamin D. Also, there are times when

4

stress or medications can interfere with the absorption of certain micronutrients, so discuss all of your medications with your health care provider to see if you may benefit from a supplement.

5

MYTH: You should never eat late or right before going to bed. FACT: If you’re working a night shift and that’s the time you can eat, you should honor that. The most important thing is being intuitive about what your body needs. If your body has a physical hunger, and it’s past 6 or 8 p.m., don’t ignore those cues. Our bodies have an innate way of telling us when we need to fuel. When we start eliminating things from our diet, we want them more. That’s one of the reasons diets backfire so much. v

hile Florida’s main growing season is October through May, there are still some herbs you can start nurturing now that may help improve your health and prevent certain ailments. Abacoa Community Garden member and core planter David Traupman offers some guidance.

ROSEMARY Benefits: Rich in antioxidants, rosemary can strengthen the immune system, improve blood circulation, and fight inflammation. Expert says: “Rosemary loves the heat and does well in Mediterranean coastal areas, so it can grow well in South Florida this time of year.”

daily value of manganese, an element that is good for brain health, growth, and metabolism. It also helps with insomnia, digestion, and inflammation. Expert says: “A lot of the really tender herbs like parsley, dill, and thyme— things that grow really fast and are really soft—don’t do well in the summer months. But tarragon is a perennial herb that is tougher and can take the heat.”

CULANTRO Benefits: Similar to cilantro, culantro can be used to fight colds and flus. Plus, the leaves can act as an appetite stimulant when added to a chutney. It is also rich in calcium, iron, and riboflavin. Expert says: “Cilantro, which is very leafy, doesn’t grow well during the summer—but culantro is an herb that is broader-leafed, tastes like cilantro, and thrives year-round.”

STEVIA Benefits: Stevia leaf is sweeter than sugar but has zero calories and doesn’t affect blood sugar levels (making it a good alternative for diabetics). Pulse dried leaves into a powder for simple storage. Expert says: “Stevia is a wonderful herb. Its leaves taste like sugar, so people use it as a sweetener.” (About two tablespoons of Stevia equals a cup of sugar.)

TARRAGON Benefits: One tablespoon of dried tarragon has 7 percent of the recommended

GINGER Benefits: Ginger root is known to reduce gas, improve digestion, and

30

help alleviate nausea. It is also packed with antioxidants. Expert says: “Ginger is very tropical and loves the summertime. Plant the tubers right below ground level in well-draining, sandy soil, and they will shoot up this time of year. Organic ginger is best because it isn’t treated to stop germinating like non-organic produce is.” ❖ facebook.com/abacoacommunitygarden; experts take gardening questions by phone (305.323.1575) on Saturdays between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

QUICK TIPS • Growing from seedlings results in fresh herbs faster than seeds. • If starting herbs from seeds (rather than pre-started seedlings), do it inside. Outdoor soil gets too hot for seeds to germinate properly. • If planting seedlings outside in the ground, do it in a shaded area. Use an herb pot or a strawberry guard on a porch or a windowsill.

Our health is our most taken for granted luxury.”

— J oe N amath

W

When the New York Jets upset the Baltimore Colts to win Super Bowl III, it was one of the most surprising moments in NFL history to many fans. But not to their quarterback. The 26-year-old from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania had, now famously, “guaranteed” that his team would pull it off. The year was 1969, and it forever cemented “Broadway Joe” as an American football superstar. These days, Joe Namath is one of the area’s most famous residents, living a quiet life in Tequesta and caring more about family and philanthropy than the trappings of fame. The 73-year-old’s idea of a party is celebrating his grandson’s

36

birthday in his kitchen with family and longtime friends. And his biggest challenge, after 13 years in pro ball, has been his health. Injuries sustained on the field throughout his career led to broken bones, torn hamstrings, and knees so battered he underwent multiple surgeries. Repeated concussions left him with traumatic brain injury (TBI) post-retirement. “Our health is our most taken for granted luxury,” says Namath, who had both knees replaced in 1992. “Our bodies are not designed to have head trauma or our knees going sideways.” Back in Namath’s day on the gridiron, blows to the noggin were almost joked about, referred to as “getting your bell rung,” not serious concussions. His memories of his head injuries: impact followed by waking to smelling salts. In other words, disconcerting, but no big deal. Over time, though, he began witnessing other players experiencing declining brain function, including a former teammate. “Here was this tough guy with fear in his eyes, voice, and face,” he recalls thinking at the time. Knowing that he had lost consciousness multiple times, Namath began to question his memNamath with his friend and neighbor ory. The bad news: Dr. Lee Fox (left); Initial brain scans in giving some love 2012 showed minito his beloved American dingo, mal blood flow to the Alexander—aka “Zander” (above). left side of his brain.

The good news: “I could do something about it.” That “something,” he says, is called hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The medical treatment has long been used for scuba divers who suffer from decompression sickness. Since injured brain tissue needs increased oxygen to thrive and heal, local radiologist Dr. Lee Fox (Namath’s neighbor and friend) and general surgeon Dr. Barry Miskin believed the therapy would help Namath’s TBI.

Over eight months, the former NFL star took 120 multi-hour “dives” in a chamber with triple the normal air pressure. The therapy did indeed restore blood flow, and, says Namath, “my brain has stayed healthy.” He credits the treatment for substantially restoring his memory. Before playing football at the University of Alabama under legendary coach Paul William “Bear” Bryant, and before becoming pro ball’s top-paid player when he joined the Jets, Namath led a modest life as the youngest of five

children in the steel-mill town of Beaver Falls, north of Pittsburgh. His parents each juggled multiple jobs and divorced when Namath was 12. By then, his siblings, 6 to 12 years his senior, had already moved on. Namath spent his summers working part-time as a caddy as well as for the parks and recreation department, and he played basketball, baseball, and football throughout high school. “Sports were my entertainment and escape from the rest of the world,” he says. He was athletic, but a lack of

height handicapped his success on the field. Raised Catholic, he would pray to Saint Jude for a growth spurt—and before graduation, he had sprouted about six inches, to 6-foot-2. “I prefer to think of St. Jude as the saint of difficult tasks, not hopeless causes,” says Namath, who has worn a medallion of the saint around his neck ever since. As Beaver Falls High School’s star quarterback in 1960, Namath led his team to a state championship with a 10-0 record. “I worked hard, was quick

on my feet, and had good hands and eyesight,” he says. Unfortunately, his college entrance exam scores blocked him from his dream to play at the University of Maryland. But then coach Bryant brought him to Tuscaloosa. He arrived in Alabama amid racial tension and segregation, which was a shock and a huge adjustment for Namath. “There was one table in the cafeteria where we ‘Northern guys’ sat,” he recalls. That’s where he met fellow student Jimmy Walsh, whose mother was Hungarian, as were Namath’s grandparents. “We’ve been friends ever since,” Namath says of Walsh, who is now vice president of the Joe Namath Foundation. Namath’s time at Alabama wasn’t perfect. In fact, Bryant benched him for the final two games of his junior year for carousing. But he has also called the footballer “the greatest athlete I’ve ever coached.” And Namath says his time spent with the Crimson Tide provided many life lessons, as he reaffirms in his autobiography, All the Way: My Life in Four Quarters (Little, Brown and Company, 2019). “Coach Bryant always said we remember the times we lost quicker than the times we won,” recalls Namath. “It’s so true.” In 1964, however, Alabama won the NCAA national championship— and the Saint Louis Cardinals and the

New York Jets both came calling. Namath decided to go with the Jets because of its leadership. Coach Weeb Ewbank, after all, had won two consecutive NFL championships, in 1958 and 1959, as head coach of the Baltimore Colts. When Namath started with the Jets, his right knee was already shot. “I was lucky to even get into pro football with my knee injury from my senior year in college,” he says. But his determination led him to complete a record 4,007 passing yards in a 14-game season that year. And just four years into his pro career, he won a Super Bowl. He was a sports star living in New York City, with green eyes, dimples on his cheeks and chin, a dazzling smile, and a head of curly hair. All of which didn’t hurt him off the field. He quickly became one of the first athletes to pitch products, including popcorn makers, bedding, Ovaltine, Noxzema shaving cream, and Hanes pantyhose—the last memorably worn by himself in a television ad along with his No. 12 Jets jersey and emerald satin boxer shorts. He also acted in a string of ’70s and ’80s films, including C.C. and Company, Chattanooga Choo Choo, and Avalanche Express, and appeared in a slew of television shows— The Brady Bunch, ALF, Married…with

Without people to rely on, we’d be lonely, and without people to share it, how good would happiness be?” — J oe N amath Children, The A-Team, Fantasy Island, and The Love Boat to name a few. Despite his fame as Broadway Joe, he says, “what stands out most [about that time] was feeling lonely in New York City’s hubbub. It made me feel really small.” Florida, on the other hand, had been calling his name for years. His love affair with the state began back when he was still in college. He recalls the day in 1963 when he flew from Pittsburgh to Miami for a New Year’s Day Alabama game. “Silver dollar–size snowflakes were falling when I left Pennsylvania, and when I stepped out of the plane in Miami, I couldn’t believe what I saw,” he says. “I just took to the greenery, blue skies, and fresh air. The tempo here agrees with me physically and mentally.” He decided to move to Florida in 1970, while still playing for the Jets, settling on Miami Springs. Later, he lived in Fort Lauderdale, where he owned a nightclub. In 1988, a realtor suggested another move—to Tequesta—and he’s been in his home on the Loxahatchee River ever since. “There’s nowhere else in the world I’d rather be than right here,” he says. Namath’s football career ended in 1977, after he left the Jets for the Los Angeles Rams and decided to hang up his cleats after just one season with his new team. And before getting to the place he is now, he admits, he struggled a bit personally over the next stretch of his life. He married then divorced 16 years later, had two daughters—Jessica, now 34, and Olivia, now 29, whom he raised with sole custody—and faced a battle with “Slick,” his nickname for alcohol. “It was a tough time for all of us emotionally,” he says of those years. “But we’re all healthy. That’s the important thing.” He quit alcohol for good in 2003. “I’m sure as heck not proud of everything I’ve done,” he says. “I’ve made so many mistakes…. In the shame, I found strength. You’ve got to try to be your best for your family, friends, and everyone around you.” Since then, he has focused his attention on his daughters, his five grandchildren, and helping others. “There is no love stronger than the

40

love you have for your family and they have for you,” he says. “Without people to rely on, we’d be lonely, and without people to share it, how good would happiness be?” “Not all folks are as fortunate as we are,” he continues. “Those who have the wherewithal and desire need to help those born into more humble circumstances. We need to make this a better world for everybody.” To that end, Namath has participated in the March of Dimes’ March for Babies (formerly called Walk America) and contributed to the Special Olympics and United Way. And in 2017, he launched the Joe Namath Foundation to benefit various children’s charities as well as neurological research. The Pro Football Hall of Famer—whose second sports-career choice was golf—holds three celebrity golf tournaments annually, raising millions at resorts in Jupiter; Birmingham, Alabama; and Bethpage, New York. He credits teamwork for what his foundation is able to accomplish. “Without the sponsors, pros, and entertainers, we wouldn’t be able to do this,” he says. “It’s us, not me.” Here in Jupiter, he’s also involved with the much-anticipated Love Street project. As an investor, he’s behind two restaurants that are scheduled to open before year’s end as part of the $30 million waterfront marketplace—one casual and family-friendly and the other more upscale. “It’s a happening area,” he says of the two-acre site near the Square Grouper that will also include retail spaces, commercial offices, and boat slips. He certainly keeps himself busy these days, but he always makes time for his family. “Thank God for FaceTime,” he says when his phone rings. He answers with a smile: “Yes, ma’am.” It’s his daughter Jessica, who has video-called so he can watch his grandson John ride on a carousel. “Nice going, buddy,” Namath encourages him. “You ride that horse!” Returning to the interview, he reflects on it all: “I’m a very lucky man and am so thankful for the life I’ve been able to live.” v

The Science of

Stillness

Practicing mindfulness meditation has long been known to calm our souls. But how does it actually work? by K . S . M E Y E R

I

t’s one of the strongest selling points of most philosophies: Life can be stressful, but finding a way to deal with it all is possible. A very old problem, with some very old solutions—some of which have aged better than others. One solution that has fared particularly well over the millennia and seen a resurgence in recent decades is mindfulness meditation. A more skeptical reader might balk at this, given both the perception by earlier generations of meditation as the pastime of flower children and the excess of misinformation that continues to thrive on the internet with respect to Eastern medicine. But, as it happens, in this particular case science has caught up with philosophy

and has much to say of its validity and usefulness. One of the worst things you can do with stress is ignore it. “In every aspect of life, stress is not going to go away,” says Sheila Griffin, program manager at Jupiter Medical Center’s Calcagnini Center for Mindfulness. “If we resist, it persists.” And through practices like mindfulness meditation, we can learn not to ignore or dismiss our worries but to observe and accept them by objectively and passively taking note of them—but not allowing ourselves to be perturbed by them. “Meditation is primarily a pathway to alleviate our suffering,” says Keith Cini, doctor of oriental medicine and acupuncturist who goes by Dr. Keith and cofounded the

Agape Healing Arts Health & Wellness Center in Tequesta with his wife, Bella Cini (Dr. Bella). “We’re all suffering to some degree, and most of us who don’t have the tools [to combat our pain] are distracted by or addicted to different things. Meditation is the pathway out of that suffering.” This ancient practice was recognized for its therapeutic potential decades ago by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, emeritus professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and founder of what is called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MSBR). Explains Griffin: “Back in the 1970s, he was working with patients with chronic illness to help them with the pain and anxiety [of

48

conditions such as] cancer, heart disease, asthma, GI issues, skin disorders, and fibromyalgia.” Kabat-Zinn’s patients reported reductions in stress in all of these categories, though their situations tended to be more acute and short-term. Modern life, on the other hand, brings stresses of a more chronic nature. “What has happened in the last 40 years is that stress is now in every part of our lives—our work, school, family, finances, aging… you name it,” Griffin continues. Keith concurs: “The modern world has caught up to everybody, especially with the advances in technology that we have.” He compares our minds to computers that won’t shut off, pointing out that although “they have the capacity of a computer, they need rest.” So how exactly does mindfulness meditation address stress? “The two things we get out of meditation are equanimity and impermanence,” explains Keith. Generally speaking, that means balance in all things and a sense that the moment is more important than the flow of many moments. He continues: “People have this dual malady of depression and anxiety— depression when we’re living in the past and anxiety when

[Meditating] isn’t going to get you to a mindset or a place where ‘everything is going to be fine,’ and nothing is ever going to trigger you. But how you respond to the stressors when they happen—that will change.” — S heila G riffin , C alcagnini C enter we’re living in the future. We can find the gift in the present moment and also establish equanimity so we’re not being pulled by those things that attract us. They say to not have aversion to anything, and not to have craving. So when you talk about the observer, you just get to witness these thoughts. You become the observer of your thoughts rather than the victim of your thoughts.” When we can achieve that balance and become observers of our thoughts, it can have positive effects on our mental health and overall well-being. “Mindfulness calms down the sympathetic nervous system—that ‘fight-or-flight’ feeling—so we end up spending more time in what is called the parasympathetic system,” says Griffin. Basically, this is the nervous system that counteracts that fight-or-flight tendency and returns the body to rest. As a result, she notes, “we become calmer and more grounded as we are coming to stillness.” “What has happened in our society is that we have so many ‘incomings,’ she continues. “We’re overstimulated.” This overstimulation leaves us with an ambient cognitive noise that can manifest as anxiety and produce, among other symptoms, panic attacks. One of the things doctors often advise when suffering a panic attack is to focus on your breathing. Bella explains how essentially being mindful of your core physical self brings you back to center. “When you get lost in a panic attack, ask yourself, ‘What is real?’” she says. “Feel your breath, put your hand on your heart, feel your heartbeat. Those two things [breath and heartbeat] are your anchor.” It’s a matter of once again focusing on the importance of equanimity and impermanence. “Everything else is in your mind,” she adds. “Coming back and telling yourself everything is okay in this moment—that’s what mindfulness is. It’s just being the observer and having a tool to stay present.” The benefits of mindfulness meditation have certainly found support in the scientific community. A wealth of peer-reviewed literature in publications such as JAMA (the Journal of American Medicine Association), the International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine and the Journal of Behavioral Medicine highlights the myriad benefits of mindfulness meditation and MSBR. In addition to the immediate physiological effects of lowering blood pressure and improving blood oxygenation, the practice also continues to show potential in the treatment of panic disorders, clinical depression, substance addiction, chronic pain, and sleep disorders, among others. Despite the many positives surrounding mindfulness meditation, Griffin says it is important to keep in mind it’s not a quick, one-time fix for all of life’s problems. Rather, it is an ongoing practice that should be adopted as part of your lifestyle if it is to be most effective. “This is a journey, not a destination,” she says. “[Meditating] isn’t going to get you to a mindset or a place where ‘everything is going to be fine,’ and nothing is ever going to trigger you. But how you respond to the stressors when they happen—that will change.” ❖

“T

he first time I visited my neighbors’ home as a boy, I thought, ‘I’d give anything to own such a nice home one day,’ ” says Timmy Grimes of the Colonial-style house he long admired in Fort Pierce’s St. Lucie Village. Nearly 40 years later, his dream came true when he and his wife, Jennifer, purchased the very same home for themselves and their teenage sons, Jackson and Cooper, and two dogs. The four-bedroom, 6,000-square-foot dwelling is situated in an ideal locale, on an expansive two-acre lot overlooking the Indian River. It included a four-car garage and separate guest quarters, and was perfect for the indoor-outdoor lifestyle the couple craved. The only issue was, the qualities that appealed to Timmy when he was a kid were now dismally out of date, and the home needed some serious TLC to make it work for his family.

From top: a white and blue palette gives the living room a contemporary feel, while repurposed furnishings honor the Colonial home’s spirit; the Schumacher wallpaper in the dining room was the inspiration for the color scheme of the entire home.

The Grimeses called on their longtime friend, interior designer Kerry Allabastro, to help. Allabastro had worked with the couple on their previous home, which happens to be situated right next door to the new one. “She is the basis of every decision we made,” says Jennifer. “She’s the pro, and what she says goes—we trust and adore her.” According to Allabastro, however, both husband and wife were very clear about their priorities. “They love to entertain and often host get-togethers for extended family members and friends who live nearby,” she says. “So they wanted an open floor plan with indoor and outdoor spaces that were casual and relaxed. With two teenage boys and two dogs, they also needed easy-to-maintain furnishings and finishes that would be virtually indestructible.”

After studying the floor plan of the house—which was originally built in 1979 and organized in a classic Colonial style, with formal living and dining spaces on one side of the central entrance foyer, the kitchen and living room on the other, and bedrooms located upstairs—Allabastro made her recommendations. She suggested removing the walls that separated the dated kitchen from the living room, raising the ceiling, repositioning the kitchen, adding a new door to the backyard, and opening up the foyer to bring more natural light into the upstairs bedrooms. Before any of these suggestions could be addressed, however, the couple needed to completely upgrade the infrastructure, including installing new electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and hurricane-rated windows and doors. Since Timmy and Jennifer run a successful local business, Grimes Heating and Air Conditioning, they could handle much of that aspect of the makeover themselves. And with so many subcontractor friends in

the construction business, they were able to easily enlist the right people to take care of all the other layers of the upgrade, including replacing the old red brick veneer on the exterior with white painted stucco, raising and improving the landscape, adding new exterior railings, and installing a brand new patio and pool in the backyard. As the guts and the exterior shell of the house were nearing completion, Allabastro worked with the Grimeses to refresh the interiors. They started by gutting every room, most of which were still outfitted with the same shag carpets and floral wallpapers their neighbors had installed 40 years ago. “Jennifer found a fresh new wallpaper from Schumacher that she loved and asked if we could use it somewhere,” says Allabastro. “It was perfect for the dining room, and it also served as the inspiration for the blue and white color palette that we used throughout the house.” Relying on the new wallpaper as a starting point for the decor, the trio worked to bring the old interiors into the present with a crisp, clean scheme, first by adding character-building elements—white-painted Craftsman-inspired millwork on the walls of living and dining spaces, new railings and newel posts on the staircase, X-beams on the ceiling in

the kitchen (which was completely revamped and moved to a more pragmatic location on the other side of the main floor leading out to the patio), shiplap and beadboard on the walls of bedrooms and baths, and a super-durable, wide-plank white oak floor throughout the main level. While the blue and white palette gives the interiors a contemporary feel, the furnishings bridge the traditional Colonial spirit of the home’s past with its fresh new aura. “We repurposed some of the furnishings from their previous home and paired them with new ones,” says Allabastro. In the living room, for example, a pair of Bergère chairs were recovered in a Lee Jofa ikat fabric, and Pearson swivel chairs were newly upholstered in

The living area leads out to the new travertine patio and 20-meter pool flanked by a pair of flaming torchères. “As soon as I saw those torchères, I knew we had to have them,” says Timmy. Allabastro refitted a lanai with a new floor and grill and introduced outdoor seating from Kingsley Bate on the patio for lounging and socializing. Overlooking the pool and located above the four-car garage, the separate guest quarters—where guests often stay for the weekend or the boys play video games and watch television with friends— were refreshed with a new kitchen, custom cabinets, and a low-maintenance linoleum floor. In the less-frequented public areas of the house on the opposite side of the entrance foyer, Allabastro took the same fresh and casual approach. In the dining room, above new custom wainscoting, the walls are enlivened with the Schumacher wallpaper that inspired the home’s overall color scheme. A sea glass chandelier from Currey & Company brightens existing furnishings, including a Hooker buffet and Bausman and Company dining table. “We used several variations of blue hues to ground the clean, white spaces throughout the house,” notes Allabastro.

The varying shades of blue also set a unique tone for each space: In the master bedroom, a mix of dreamy, sun-washed blues brings a soothing vibe. An Emerson Bentley bed outfitted in luxury bedding from Eastern Accents anchors the space beneath a sculptural light fixture from Palecek; a blue Lexington dresser follows the color scheme. Alternatively, in one of the son’s bedrooms, deep navy and indigo set a more “boyish” tone. Timmy recalls the reaction of his sons when he and Jennifer first bought the home and saw the condition of everything: “They asked me, ‘What are you doing, Dad?’” But now they love the place they’ve called home since moving in this past December. And, adds Jennifer, “so do the dogs.” v

Robin A. Sykes, M.D.

Jupiter Plastic Surgery Center

Every patient is unique, and for them there is a unique group of possible solutions. Our goal is to find the solutions that help us to help our patients feel and look better about themselves. This might be changing and improving your nose or body contours, or it might mean recapturing a more youthful look with surgeries or nonsurgical means. All of these options are available with Dr. Sykes. There are also ways to improve your looks and health with some of the newer nonsurgical devices, making fat dissolve away and tightening muscle, making skin smoother and relaxing wrinkles and helping recapture loss

of subcutaneous tissues. There are also great products that improve the skin surface with creams alone. Patient safety if of course very important. Therapies need to be proven to work. Devices need to be safe and effective, and be applied by the best-trained individuals. Dr. Robin Sykes is a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, trained to work on the whole body. She attended Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She is also an award-winning artist, is a musician, and is very involved in giving back to her community.

David Herold, M.D., M.B.A. Water’s Edge Dermatology

Dr. David Herold, a board-certified radiation oncologist, is passionate about treating and eradicating skin cancer. After earning an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Dr. Herold joined Dr. Ted Schiff at Water’s Edge Dermatology. While there, he helped to create a skin cancer treatment program unlike any other dermatology group in Florida that offers patients surgical and non-surgical options. “It is important for skin cancer patients to understand they have more than one treatment option,” says Dr. Herold. “I am passionate about educating patients and offering the choice of Electron Beam Therapy.” A Florida native, Dr. Herold graduated from Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, and attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and later Oxford University in Oxfordshire, England. He earned a medical degree from the University of

Florida in Gainesville, received training in internal medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, and then completed a residency in Radiation Oncology at Fox Chase/University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center in Philadelphia. Dr. Herold began his career in radiation oncology at Jupiter Medical Center during which he was responsible for the radiation oncology program and pioneered the skin cancer program. He has also practiced at Palm Beach Gardens Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center, Good Samaritan, Wellington Hospital, and the Palm Beach Cancer Institute. When not treating patients, Dr. Herold is an active lecturer at meetings nationwide and enjoys riding his mountain bike at Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Riverbend Park or Apoxee Trail. He is an avid pianist and an active wildlife and nature photographer.

ABOUT THE LIST Medical decisions are some of the most important choices our readers make. In an effort to provide the best medical information available, Jupiter Magazine has enlisted a professional marketing company, DataJoe of Greely, Colorado to identify the Top Doctors in Palm Beach County. Together we surveyed licensed physicians, asking them to reveal the best medical professionals in our area. These Top Doctors have been scrutinized for the legitimacy of their licenses as well as their status with the Florida Department of Health. While there are outstanding professionals who aren’t listed here, we hope you’ll give these doctors special consideration when choosing a medical professional.

She is currently seeing general neurology patients but has a special interest in migraine headaches, neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), and stroke. When not practicing medicine, Dr. Buczyner enjoys riding the Peloton, watching University of Georgia football (Go Dawgs!) and traveling with her family. She is also a selfproclaimed foodie.

Jean-Paul Azzi, M.D.

Double Board Certified Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon The Palm Beach Center for Facial Plastic & Laser Surgery Dr. Jean-Paul Azzi is known as South Florida’s go-to facial plastic surgeon and has been designated as a Top Doc for 2020. He specializes exclusively in cosmetic and reconstructive procedures of the face, nose, and neck, and utilizes the most advanced and cutting-edge techniques in facial plastic surgery to individualize every patient’s treatment. Renowned for his amazingly natural-looking procedures, the Jupiterbased surgeon is here to answer some commonly asked questions about his practice, his signature procedures, and being one of the country’s leading experts in revision procedures.

What are the most common procedures you perform? Well, I am a facial plastic3surgeon, so by definition, I only do the neck and up. Things like facelifts, neck lifts, rhinoplasty or nose jobs, blepharoplasty or eyelid lifts, brow lifts, lip lifts, skin cancer reconstruction etc.

Being so specialized, which procedures do people seek you out for? I have had patients come from all over the country to have cosmetic surgery, but some things come up more than others. Revision procedures3are what I am wellknown for and it/s these speciali.ed procedures that patients3are more likely to travel for. Specifically, revision facelifts. I do a very special type of facelift called a deep-plane facelift. The other procedure most commonly performed for out-oftown patients is my modified lip lift.

What are the advantages of the deep-plane facelift you mentioned? It is the most advanced techni&ue for facelifting and only a few percent of surgeons in the country are trained to perform this procedure. I think the best part about the deep-plane facelift is how natural but dramatic the results can be. Patients most often choose it because it can be done in the office without going under anesthesia and because it lasts so much longer than the standard facelift.

You mentioned a "lip lift" briefly. Can you explain it? Sure, it/s a natural and relatively permanent solution to the aging lip to create a fuller look. I started doing this procedure to get around the limits and potential for a "done" look when helping people with their lips using fillers. This procedure allows me to create a beautiful and natural cupids bow for a patient. It can be done right in the office in about 30 minutes. I get a lot of satisfaction by how happy and appreciative patients are after this procedure.

Do you have Before - After photos we can look at? Of course, you can find photos on our website at www.palmbeachfacialsurgery.com. We also post photos on Instagram and Facebook: @palmbeachfacialsurgery

What are your favorite procedures to perform? Actually, my favorites are the ones I perform for deformed children in other countries.

Which countries do you go visit to help these children? I have been to Vietnam, Guatemala, Colombia and Ecuador. I go with two different groups and have done 4 trips in one year before. We can surgically help over 100 children in just a week. It is tremendously rewarding.

PLASTIC SURGERY KIM EDWARD KOGER, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Kim Edward Koger received his Doctorate of Medicine from Duke University School of Medicine. After medical school, he completed his five year general surgery residency at Stanford University Medical Center. He then returned to Duke University where he performed his residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Koger is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. A native Floridian, Dr. Koger was born and raised in Orlando and has been in practice in Jupiter for the past 21 years.

are the goals of any cosmetic plastic surgery? Q What A

The primary goal of cosmetic surgery is to enhance a person’s appearance, providing a soft and natural result. Cosmetic surgery is meant to enhance the natural beauty that you already have. It is not designed to make you look like an entirely new person. Using delicate plastic surgery skill and strategically hiding incisions, physical flaws can be minimized or eliminated without tell-tale signs of surgery. Whether your goal is to have a more youthful face, fuller breasts or a flatter tummy, cosmetic plastic surgery can provide natural enhancements that create balance and beauty to your face and body.

Q What are realistic expectations? A

KOGER PLASTIC SURGERY 4600 Military Trail, Suite 202 Jupiter, Florida 33458 561.748.1565 KogerPlasticSurgery.com

The surgeon-patient team is built on trust and communication. A thorough consultation to discuss the various options beneficial for you specifically is the very first step. Having realistic expectations of what is achievable (and what’s not achievable) when considering cosmetic plastic surgery is very important. Your unique starting anatomy will dictate what is realistically achievable to improve your appearance. Patients often have different goals from surgery; therefore, it is important to openly discuss what you are hoping to achieve. If you are considering cosmetic plastic surgery, we invite you to come in and discuss your aesthetic goals.

are patients thinking about when it comes to plastic surgery? Q What A

ARTURO GUILOFF, M.D. 2865 PGA Boulevard Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410 561.776.9555 drguiloff.com/my-consult

Plastic surgery has always bridged gender divides, but for males, the stigma surrounding changing your features is now fading. Many masculine feature surgeries are on the rise, including male breast-reduction and facelift, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, including injectables like Botox or Juvederm. Why shouldn’t everyone have all of the options at their disposal? Maintenance and preventative treatments are also on the rise for everyone. Rather than just dramatic, onetime surgeries, clients are taking a more preventative approach to their cosmetic journey. Scheduling regular “me-time” appointments for minor updates like Coolsculpting or injectables to reduce the potential need for more invasive procedures down the road just makes sense. Everyone deserves to feel and look their best, so why wait to correct something you want to change when you can work to try to prevent it in the first place. And for those who want to take maintenance to the next level, their procedures are already off in the right direction, under the guidance of a skilled medical professional.

can you make sure you are choosing the right surgeon? Q How A While there are many options available, anyone interested in significantly changing their body should be sure to work with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon. Do your homework and research potential surgeons so you can be sure your surgeon meets your standard of excellence. Check out their reviews online and see if they have any before & after photos that show their work on real-life people. Once you schedule a consultation, ask any and all questions you may have. A qualified surgeon will be happy to ease your concerns without promising unrealistic results. You should leave your consult feeling confident that your surgeon is in your corner to help create the best results possible for you.

This translates to tomatillo salsa with house-made crispy corn chips, yuca fries, and of course, tacos— with the perfect tortilla. “They’re 60 percent corn and 40 percent flour, so they get a little crispy, not mushy,” says Sanchez. Adventurous eaters will appreciate his creative flair with the fillings: The head chef

has served everything from duck, short rib, salmon, coconut shrimp, and alligator. However, his take on the staples—like carne asada with chimichurri sauce, queso fresco, sweet peppers, and radish—never grow tired. His recommendation for washing it all down? “A Mexican beer like Pacifico or Dos Equis.” PapiChulo offers both takeout and delivery. 1556 U.S. Hwy. 1, Jupiter; papichulotacos.com; 561.250.7274 Calaveras Cantina Everything at this Harbourside Place mainstay, from its tacos to its margaritas,

represents a contemporary update on Mexican staples. “Our tacos are traditional with a modern-day flair,” says General Manager Josh Williams. “Our chef does a great job of bringing in fresh ingredients. The brisket for the barbacoa tacos with avocado ranch and chihuahua cheese, and the pork for the carnitas tacos with pico and cotija cheese, are both smoked inhouse.” Other top picks from Calaveras Cantina include the Cali fish taco, which pairs catches like cobia with pineapple slaw and chipotle aioli, and the spicy pork belly taco with a Korean barbeque glaze and kimchi. Diners can also choose from a flour tortilla, a hard-shell or soft-shell corn tortilla, or a lettuce wrap. For drinks, what pairs better with a taco than a margarita? Opt for varieties such as the Sangre De Cristo blood orange and the spicy Salma’s Snake Dance watermelon and habanero margarita. Calaveras Cantina is offering curbside pickup daily from noon to 9 p.m.—and that can include a margarita (for $8). 125 Dockside Circle, Jupiter; calaverascantinas.com; 561.320.9661 El Fogoncito Those seeking Molcajete Azteca truly authentic at El Fogoncito Mexican cuisine should head to this family-owned-andoperated gem. El Fogoncito, which translates to “the little fire,” was born out of Gabriel and Margarita Montes’ desire to share dishes that have been passed on through generations. “[Gabriel] was the chef at Johnny Longboats on Singer Island for nearly 14 years,” says Omar Montes, the couple’s son and general manager of El Fogoncito. “And the recipes come from [Margarita’s] family. Together, they do everything from scratch on a daily basis.” That includes making the softshell corn tortillas for their street-style tacos. Popular varieties include the tacos al pastor filled with marinated pork, pineapple, cilantro, and onions and the vegetarian tacos filled with seasonal vegetables like sautéed peppers and zucchini. The Montes’ tamales and the molcajete Azteca—chorizo, veggies, grilled cactus, ranchero beans, and green salsa served in a lava rock and topped with queso fresco and onions—are also hits. Says Omar: “The food they cook here is the food I’ve been eating my whole life.” El Fogoncito is currently offering takeout and delivery. 711 W. A Selection of Area Restaurants The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted the restaurant industry. Here, we outline a selection of eateries that (as of press time) are open for takeout and/or delivery service. Please consider supporting locally owned restaurants during this difficult time. AMERICAN

FARM-TO-TABLE EVOLUTION When Farmer’s Table opened in Boca Raton in 2013, it spawned a love affair across Palm Beach County for its innovative menu: delectable contemporary American dishes without cream, butter, or deep frying. Now North County residents need not travel far for favorites like Buffalo cauliflower drumettes, spasta (spaghetti squash pasta) and chicken meatballs, and the melt-in-your-mouth, grass-fed beef short ribs. At the end of 2019, Farmer’s Table opened its second location at North Palm Beach Country Club as part of the club’s $20 million makeover, which also included a brand-new clubhouse and an extensive renovation of the Jack Nicklaus–designed golf course. The eatery owes its robust fan base to its food doctrine. Culinary director Chef Michael Schenk hails from Germany and merges his experience working in Michelin-starred restaurants with his knowledge of health-forward cuisine. He pulls fresh herbs and vegetables from the on-site garden and sources organic and sustainable ingredients to make everything from scratch each day, including all sauces, condiments, and juices. His plates avoid excess salt and fat, proving that utilizing the freshest, highest-quality ingredients results in unsurpassable flavor. The restaurant offers curbside pickup daily, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., featuring hits like pan-roasted salmon with kale pesto and pasta-less vegetable lasagna. Plus, the newly expanded Farmer’s Table Express “Grab & Go” store offers ready-to-eat items like soups, salads, sandwiches, select dinner entrées, and desserts including carrot cake and key lime pie. 951 U.S. Hwy. 1, North Palm Beach; Cucumber dinefarmerstable.com; tartare 561.691.3430 —L.P.

COVID-19: Local Updates The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has made an adverse impact on the United States, including Palm Beach County. While it’s impossible to keep up with the daily-changing news in a monthly magazine, we are doing our part to gather useful information to share on our website. For the latest on the pandemic and how it is affecting our area, visit jupitermag.com/covid19.

“A little touch of roseate to brighten your day” Mark Cook (@lightswitchaddict)

“The good days” Tom Roche (@offshoretom)

EASY YOGA, BIG REWARDS It may not always be possible to get to a yoga class, but practicing one pose a day at home can have a powerful and positive effect on your body and mind, lowering stress levels, balancing hormones, and increasing overall energy. The yoga pose pictured above is commonly referred to as “Legs Up the Wall” and is a simple way to reap potent mind and body benefits: Elevating the legs sends fresh blood and oxygen to the heart and head, and facilitates the body’s detoxification processes. To learn how to do it correctly for maximum restorative potential, visit jupitermag.com/yoga.

Doc Talk: Idle Therapy Many employees are working at home these days, which definitely has its perks (like saving money on gas and not having to get out of your pajamas). But without the need for daily commutes, it also means a substantial reduction in activity levels for some of us. And that can lead to a host of physical ailments including neck pain, back pain, and other musculoskeletal conditions. Get expert advice from Dr. Jorge Giral, a physical and manual therapist and the clinical manager at Hospital of Special Services (HSS) Florida, on maintaining posture at your home office setup and how to perform mobility moves to keep your body strong jupitermag.com/workfromhome.
