All About STYLE

Daphne Nikolopoulos dnikolopoulos@fortlauderdaleillustrated.com

CAPEHART

After six months of social distancing and collective breath-holding, September feels like a fresh start. Kids are going back to school, albeit mostly virtually. The fashion industry is rolling out its fall collections. Businesses across the board are poised for a new season, whatever that will look like. The general mood is one of positivity, optimism, and strength in community. That’s the tone of our September issue, as well. This month we focus on style and what it has come to mean in the era of COVID-19. Our cover feature shines a spotlight on four local gents with a personal style that goes beyond fashion choices. These men exude the confidence, passion, and leadership that have led to extraordinary achievements. I invite you to meet them in “Men of Style,” starting on page 34. When it comes to women’s style, the possibilities are endless. We highlight a few, from the hot fitness concepts of the new Rytual7 to the effortless but elevated brand of personal stylist Caitlin Saucier (both in 24/Seven, starting on page 13) to the punchy color stories of the fall collections (“The Future is Bright,” page 42). It just goes to show there are many ways to make a statement, and Fort Lauderdale, with its diversity and edge, is fertile ground for sartorial expression. Style extends to living environments as well, especially now that our lives have become more home-centric. The new priority on safety, flexibility, and function—without sacrificing form—has led to innovative design that reflects the way people live now. Architects and interior designers are rethinking interiors to achieve mind-body balance and to be suited to multigenerational use. Check out some of the possibilities in “Harmonious Design” on page 52. Wishing everyone a safe and smooth transition into season.

What We’re GRATEFUL For

When the going gets tough (and it certainly has this year), feelings of gratitude can sometimes take a back seat. With World Gratitude Day landing on September 21, this month is the perfect time to identify what you are grateful for. Developing a consistent gratitude practice can give your mood, mental well-being, interpersonal relationships, and health major boosts. From weekly journaling to meditation routines, we chat about the ways gratitude can make “unprecedented times” a little more bearable.

NEW & NOW

A DAILY RYTUAL

If you’re tired of throwing on the same pair of shorts and tank top to work out, it’s time to kick it up a notch with a visit to Rytual7, Fort Lauderdale’s hottest new boutique for active and loungewear. Co-founders Maureen Straub and Adriane Abraham, who also owns Roar Station gym, envisioned Rytual7 as a destination for fitness attire, but have since evolved the concept to include clothing that’s also ideal for going out. “There is no reason to not be sexy and comfortable at the same time,” says Straub. Here, visitors can pick up everything from the bestselling Strut This leggings to a fun band T-shirt. The

013_24/7_OPENER_0920.indd 13

boutique’s name comes from the idea that a ritual is what shapes a person’s habits, actions, and who one is as an individual, with the No. 7 standing for seven days a week. “It is your responsibility to show up for yourself, to keep growing, and, of course, to do it all in style and comfort,” adds Straub. My Chanel booties. I can style them with everything from denim to a mini dress.

2 Best DRESSED Stylist and personal shopper Caitlin Saucier has been outfitting clientele for as long as she can remember. She started her brand, Sauci Style, seven years ago and also uses social media channels such as Instagram to share how-to videos, ensemble inspiration, and peeks inside her own closet. “I love that I can give my followers a glimpse of what it’s like to be a personal stylist along with tips on how to style pieces,” says the Fort Lauderdale fashionista who has clients in South Florida, New York City, Nashville, and Los Angeles. She notes that she typically spends about three to four hours with a client, doing fittings for any pieces she may have selected for them and also engaging in some closet editing. “Then, once we are done trying on all the new things, I will start styling them and creating their style book.” Saucier also offers packing assistance for jet-setters, in addition to “closet rehab,” wardrobe curation, and even virtual sessions. She describes her personal aesthetic as “elevated coolness, pretty effortless, and approachable.” Here, she shares a few of her favorite things, places, and sips. (saucistyle.com) —M.P. 14

A HELPING HAND

Local organizations and community members have STEPPED FORWARD to help those affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Here, we highlight several who have made a difference. By Melissa Puppo

TOAST DISTILLERS X VERITAS FARMS

FEEDING SOUTH FLORIDA

Veritas Farms, an agribusiness producing hemp extracts with natural cannabinoids, partnered with Miami-based Toast Distillers in May to address the growing need for hand sanitizer in the U.S. “At the onset of the pandemic, we knew we could partner together to bring this essential product to market using Toast Distillers’ manufacturing capabilities and our distribution network,” says Derek Thomas, Veritas Farms’ vice president of business development. The hand sanitizers, made of alcohol, aloe vera, and vitamin E, were distributed to nearly 10,000 retail stores and made available online. (theveritasfarms.com; toastdistillers.com)

One of the largest organizations in demand amid the pandemic has been Feeding South Florida, the region’s leading domestic hunger-relief service group. As of press time, it has set up 240 drive-thru food distribution centers across Fort Lauderdale, Plantation, Cooper City, Deerfield Beach, and Tamarac, benefiting more than 280,000 families. “We will continue drive-thru food distributions, home deliveries, supporting our partner agencies, and rolling out innovative programs that put food on the table of those who need it the most during this critical time,” says Sari Vatske, Feeding South Florida’s executive vice president. The organization also unveiled a new 5,000-square-foot community kitchen in Boynton Beach in July, which will provide meals throughout our communities. (feedingsouthflorida.org)

HANDS FOR HOSPITALITY

DELIVERLEAN Scott Harris knew he had to use his platform as founder of DeliverLean to make a difference. Based in Fort Lauderdale, DeliverLean has become one of the nation’s largest food manufacturers specializing in health and wellness. In addition to healthy meal and emergency meal kit deliveries, DeliverLean and Harris have partnered with prominent Miami sports teams and personalities to feed thousands during the height of the pandemic. “We were even fortunate enough to hire hundreds of employees,” says Harris. As of press time, DeliverLean has donated more than 20,000 meals and 100,000 nonperishables. (deliverlean.com) 16

IN THE WAKE OF RESTAURANT CLOSURES AS A RESULT OF THE CORONAVIRUS, SOME OF FORT LAUDERDALE’S LEADING RESTAURANT GROUPS JOINED FORCES TO LAUNCH HANDS FOR HOSPITALITY. BRANDS SUCH AS THE RESTAURANT PEOPLE, THE WHARF, BE NICE HOSPITALITY, HANDCRAFTED HOSPITALITY, AND MORE SET UP A GO FUND ME PAGE TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO THE HOURLY WORKERS WHO WERE LEFT UNEMPLOYED OR FURLOUGHED. SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN MARCH, THE CROWDFUNDED ENDEAVOR HAS RAISED $51,929.

Let’s Go to the MOVIES

Fueled by social distancing, DRIVE-IN CINEMAS are seeing a resurgence in South Florida By Mary Murray

D

rive-in movies became a symbol of American popular culture in the 1950s and ’60s. At the height of their popularity, there were more than 4,000 such operations across the United States, concentrated mostly in rural

areas. And while they eventually fell in favor of cineplexes and on-demand home viewing, the recent coronavirus pandemic and resultant social distancing guidelines have led to renewed interest in the drive-in movie experience.

The Swap Shop (floridaswapshop.com), which operates drive-in theaters in Fort Lauderdale and Lake Worth, has had a major increase in attendance since the outbreak. And many of those new customers have been parents looking for a fun, safe activity for kids.

South Florida is teeming with drive-in theaters from the Swap Shop, to FLIFF’s offerings at Pier Sixty-Six, to Popcorn Frights Drive-In Horrorshow, all of which have proven to be an effective form of entertainment amid social distancing concerns.

It’s easy to practice social distancing at the drive-in because you can watch the film from the privacy of your car and bring your own food from home. Patrons are required to wear masks when outside of their vehicle and stay 6 feet away from one another when purchasing concessions. Although there’s been a downtick in new film releases, the Swap Shop has been scheduling second-run movies, older classics, and more family-friendly flicks. The public can also make requests on the Swap Shop website. While the Swap Shop’s drive-in has been in operation since 1963, the pandemic has inspired other area film professionals to adopt a similar business model. The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (fliff.com) introduced a drive-in cinema earlier this year after it was

forced to temporarily close its theaters. Over the summer, FLIFF hosted weekend screenings at Pier Sixty-Six Marina South; the organization plans to continue this type of programming through the fall and will incorporate drive-ins into its festival in November. FLIFF President and CEO Gregory von Hausch states that drive-ins are ideal for the restrictions surrounding social distancing. They’re “fun, retro, and provide a shared communal experience without the dangers of proximity,” he says. In contrast to the more arthouse films FLIFF screens at its theaters, Savor Cinema Lauderdale and Cinema Paradiso Hollywood, von Hausch describes the drive-in showings as multiplex fare. “We also ruled out foreign films as the subtitles would not be conducive for this event,” he

adds. Some notable summer highlights were sing-along screenings of movie musicals like Hairspray and Grease. For something more niche, South Floridians flocked to the Popcorn Frights Drive-In Horrorshow (popcornfrights.com), which hosted summer screenings at the MASS District. These pop-ups focused on film premieres in order to “continue supporting independent filmmakers whose movie releases were upended due to COVID-19,” says Igor Shteyrenberg, co-founder and codirector of Popcorn Frights. The Popcorn Frights screenings included pre-shows featuring international short films, nostalgic clips, and other surprises, notes Shteyrenberg. As of press time, Shteyrenberg was looking at embracing the drive-in model and presenting a rolling roadshow as an alternative to the annual Popcorn Frights Film Festival. “Our essential purpose right now is to strengthen connections in our community and bring everyone together again to have a good time in the safest way possible.” «

TIPS FOR FIRST-TIMERS PRICES VARY AT DRIVE-IN THEATERS, WITH SOME CHARGING PER CARLOAD AND OTHERS PER INDIVIDUAL, SO CONTACT EACH BUSINESS TO LEARN MORE. THE STAFF AT THE SWAP SHOP RECOMMENDS BRINGING A BOOM BOX INSTEAD OF RELYING ON THE CAR’S SPEAKERS TO HEAR THE MOVIE. IF YOU HAVE A PICK-UP TRUCK, OUTFIT IT WITH PILLOWS AND BLANKETS, PULL INTO YOUR DESIGNATED SPACE, AND ENJOY THE FILM UNDER THE STARS.

Mercedes-Benz shoehorns a hybridized 603-hp V-8 into its midsize GLE, with EXPLOSIVE RESULTS By Howard Walker To fully prepare for the face-melting experience of piloting the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S, skip the dealer test drive and head to Daytona Beach. Here, behind the gates of the thrill-seeker’s paradise that is Screamer’s Park, you’ll find the Daytona Slingshot. It’s right next to the aptly named Vomatron. Pay $25, strap yourself in, and get ready to feel the thrust of 40 tons of spring pressure as you catapult 365 feet into the air. This vertical acceleration of up to 5 G’s is not for the faint of heart. Those who survive, however, will be more than ready to tackle the equally explosive GLE 63 S SUV. To enjoy this 603-hp beast in all its glory, simply engage Sport+,

PRICE: FROM $114,945 ENGINE: 4.0-LITER TWINTURBO V-8 POWER: 603 HP TORQUE: 627 LB-FT TRANSMISSION: 9-SPEED AUTOMATIC 0-60: 3.7 SECONDS TOP SPEED: 174 MPH LENGTH/WIDTH: 190/79 INCHES WEIGHT: 5,300 POUNDS WHY WE LOVE IT: BECAUSE IT PAIRS SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE WITH SUV PRACTICALITY.

press hard on the brake pedal with your left foot while mashing the throttle with your right, then release. With all-wheel drive channeling 627 lb-ft of torque to the blacktop, there’s not a chirp of wheelspin, just the gut-wrenching propulsion of this 5,300-pound cruise missile as it slingshots toward the horizon. Holy moly, it’s fast. Fast as in zero to 60 in just 3.7 seconds. Fast as in a top speed of 174 mph. And all this in a family-friendly, five-person luggage-hauler with cupholders. This trait comes courtesy of the latest iteration of Mercedes-AMG’s hand-assembled 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8. The twist here is the 48-volt electric motor system—deemed EQ Boost—sandwiched between the engine and the 9-speed automatic. It’s called a mild hybrid, though there’s nothing mild about it. What EQ Boost does is provide an instant jolt of electric muscle (an extra 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque) for when you need some grunt, such as off-the-line acceleration and zipping past slower traffic. Yet the real beauty is the V-8’s Dr. Jekyll–and–Mr. Hyde persona. When

30 FORT LAUDERDALE ILLUSTRATED

it’s not acting like the motor out of a top-fuel dragster, it’s a pussycat. Cruise around town, amble along the interstate, idle away in a Starbucks drivethru, and it plays all nice and quiet. It’ll even deactivate four of its eight cylinders to boost fuel economy. If this tire-shredding performance sounds impressive, wait until you hurl this red-hot GLE along a curvy backroad. With standard AMG Active Ride Control air suspension that includes adaptive damping, the Merc pretty much does away with body roll. It’s truly otherworldly how this tall-riding sport-ute can fire through a series of squiggly S-bends with the precision and agility of a low-slung, two-seat sports car. Talk of understeer and oversteer is redundant because it goes where you point it—and at ridiculous velocities. This SUV has the bold looks to match its brain-frying speed. I love that toothy grille inspired by the old Mercedes Carrera Panamericana racers of the early ’50s. The chrome-ringed, air-gulping lower section beneath it is just as tantalizing. Throw in some AMG side skirts under the doors, body-painted flared wheel arches at each corner, and a

quartet of polished exhaust finishers at the back, and the 63 S appears as muscular as Sylvester Stallone in his Rocky days. The craftsmanship of the interior is also second to none. Expect perforated Nappa leather–trimmed seats, an awesome AMG leather wheel, brushed stainless-steel pedals, and some lovely carbon-fiber trim. Price of entry to the Merc-AMG GLE 63 S kicks off at $114,945, though as with all Mercedes offerings, it’s easy to go crazy with the options list. Our Brilliant Blue Metallic tester stickered at $133,075. But with its near-supercar levels of performance and handling, coupled with the five-seat versatility and load-carrying practicality of an SUV, this mighty Merc offers the best of all worlds. And much like the Daytona Slingshot, it’ll take driving thrills to new heights. «

Chris-Craft’s latest Launch 28 GT is a HIGH-LUXURY sports car for the seas By Howard Walker

32

T

he sheer splendor of every new Chris-Craft is encapsulated by its steering wheel. Just look at the thing. Better yet, touch it. The upper part is a rich, dark mahogany, varnished to perfection. The lower section is covered in a creamy, embossed leather with contrasting crisscross stitching. This isn’t just any steering wheel. It comes with a true surpriseand-delight feature: The mirror-polished central hub is weighted to keep the Chris-Craft logo level at all times, a parlor trick Rolls-Royce employs on the hubcaps of its $450,000 Phantom. Right now, that lovely wheel is being put to good use as we dodge crab traps—at 50 mph, blasting across Sarasota Bay—in Chris-Craft’s exquisite new Launch 28 GT, a top-seller in the 146-year-old boat-builder’s ever-expanding lineup. This one’s a little different, though. After decades of making the 28 with honking V-8 inboards hooked up to stern drives, the version we’re piloting has the latest Yamaha 425 V-8 outboard hanging off the stern. Yes, that’s 425, as in a towering 425 horses. The advantage here is that outboard power typically means less maintenance, easier servicing, and better efficiency. Plus, there’s one humongous bonus: extra storage. With the Yamaha dangling off the back, the place where the inboard—either one or two—used to live is freed up. Now, at the press of a button, the rear hatch, which is typically topped with a comfy sunpad,

Hard down on the single-lever throttle, the engine roars like a V-8 big-block in a vintage muscle car, and the 28 GT leaps onto the plane in less than 5 seconds. We keep the lever hard forward and top out at an eye-watering 53 mph. As we pull back and spin that sexy wheel, the boat leans gracefully into the turn with real confidence and agility. When we hit our own wake, the smooth-riding hull slices through, splaying the water away, keeping the interior bone dry. Naturally, all this quality doesn’t come cheap. The base price of a 28 GT with a single 350-hp Mercury Verado is $200,470. Start adding the Heritage Edition trim with teak flooring ($22,100), the 425-hp Yamaha ($22,540), a painted GT hardtop ($29,950), and a bow-thruster ($9,800), and it’s easy to get to the $289,655 of our test boat. But the joy of knowing you’ll spin heads every time you pull up to that dockside eatery? Priceless. «

The wood, however, is genuine, and it’s paired with so much polished stainless steel, you’ll swear you’re inside a Bentley convertible. The Launch 28 GT is also pretty practical. It’s the perfect family boat, with an open, bow-rider design that can accommodate at least 10. Hidden behind a swing-out door is a roomy toilet compartment with decent headroom, a washbasin, and a pump-out loo. Twist the key and the Yamaha fires straight up and idles with the hushed tick-tick-tick of a sewing machine. JHOAN SEBASTIAN GREY

THE MOGUL

This 33-year-old designer is pushing boundaries and creating fashion with a purpose under his eponymous brand, Jhoan Sebastian Grey. The Colombia native gained the essential skills of precision and customer satisfaction while working at his family’s leather business and later pursued fashion at the Academy of Professional Drawing in Cali, Colombia. Bravo TV fans will recognize Grey as the winner of Project Runway season 17, when he endeared judges and viewers alike with his warm personality and raw talent. At home in Broward County, Grey crafts pieces focused on texture and detail at his Oakland Park studio. He describes his aesthetic as “casual, comfortable, feminine, and fun,” and notes that he’s attempted every look imaginable. In addition to pursuing a master’s degree in luxury brand management at the Istituto Marangoni in Miami, Grey is keeping busy with his design work, including a recent collaboration with Black Vision Collective on a T-shirt inspired by racial equality. He plans to debut his latest collection, “Grey, by Jhoan Sebastian Grey,” this fall. 34

NICK HICKS

THE SHAPESHIFTER You’ve probably bumped into Nick Hicks around town—either while training at his high-intensity gym in Davie or grabbing a warm, gooey treat in the MASS District. As the co-owner of Per4orm Sports Performance Facility and Batch, the Cookie Company, the 31-year-old is a familiar face to many. He admittedly has “more workout clothes than Dick’s Sporting Goods,” but when not training professional and high school athletes, Hicks cleans up nicely. The entrepreneur’s charming personality and real-life experiences resonate with those at Junior Achievement of South Florida, through which he volunteers and helps youth pursue their business goals. If you spot Hicks on date night, he’s likely wearing his go-to favorites: jeans, a fitted T-shirt, and shoes “that look expensive but in fact are not.” 36

THE RENAISSANCE MAN The best style advice Andrew Martineau ever received was to invest in suits. It’s clear he took that tip to heart, as the 44-year-old often sports eye-catching blazers, in floral and other fun patterns, at events across Broward County. Aside from making an impact when it comes to clothing, Martineau centers his professional endeavors around solving problems and giving back. As the founder, partner, and chief creative altruist of UniteUs Group, the Fort Lauderdale resident offers creative marketing, advertising, and other niche services that seek to elevate brand awareness and build community. His efforts encompass divisions such as UniteUs Agency, UniteUs Women, and Choose954, which helps to cultivate arts and culture in Broward County by connecting artists and organizations with local audiences. Martineau also co-founded Art Fort Lauderdale, a four-day art fair along the Intracoastal, and Zero Empty Spaces, which transforms vacant spaces into affordable artist studios. VOYTEK FABER

THE ARTISTIC VISIONARY Some of South Florida’s most well-designed homes can be credited to Voytek Faber, owner of Equilibrium Interior Design. His career in interiors stems from a passion for building everything from houses to models, relationships, and businesses. “I love the creative process and I love to draw,” notes the 45-year-old who grew up in Poland and now resides in Fort Lauderdale. With an eye for design, Faber dresses the part and is most confident wearing a white dress shirt, jeans, and showstopping shoes. “I love the colors and shapes, including high tops,” Faber says of his footwear obsession. “No matter if you are dressed up or dressed down, a nice pair of shoes makes it fun.” Aside from interior design, Faber is the co-owner of Xera Med Research in Boca Raton and helps make miracles happen as a champion at the Make-A-Wish Foundation. « Personal style: Casual comfort Designer appreciation: Kim Jones. he late interior designer Albert Hadley once mused, “The essence of interior design will always be about people and how they live.” While this adage still rings true, the way people live is constantly changing. In South Florida, dynamic design responds to residents’ evolving needs, from a desire for a marriage of indoor-outdoor living, to a want for flexible spaces that can serve many purposes, to a thirst for form that follows function without sacrificing fashion. People have long flocked to South Florida for its tropical environs—and blurring the line between out and in is one of the top regional trends in home design. Areas such as central courtyards and balconies not only improve the aesthetic of a residence, but they can also nurture a sense of well-being. Through durable plant life and weather-resistant furnishings, designers transport the look, feel, and comfort of private interiors to the outdoors and establish an easy transition between the two. “Outside spaces are an extension of our living rooms,” says Adam Adache, managing partner of Cavache Properties, developer of 30 Thirty North Ocean in Fort Lauderdale. In addition to large windows, these two-level condominiums accommodate open-air living and feature terraces that allow homeowners to feel more connected to nature. This symbiotic relationship between inside and out extends to interiors, too, where designers are culling inspiration from natural elements and a structure’s own architecture.

One of the pioneers in South Florida’s dynamic design renaissance is the One Thousand Museum, the only Western Hemisphere residential skyscraper by the late architectural phenom Zaha Hadid. (This is where David Beckham, the British superstar athlete

who recently launched his soccer team, Inter Miami CF, at the former Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, has purchased a $20 million, full-floor penthouse for his family.) The building’s sculptural facade strikes a futuristic silhouette on Biscayne Bay, and this commitment to forward-thinking architecture applies to the individual units, where owners can soak in the view from grand terraces. “You can look at this building from miles away and know it’s like nothing else that exists,” says co-developer Louis Birdman. As much as interiors take cues from architecture, outdoor motifs can also appear in design. Another new trend is wallpaper that resembles materials commonly associated with exteriors. Brick, stone, and jewel tones add “depth, dimension, character, and personality to the home,” says Perla Lichi of Perla Lichi Design in Fort Lauderdale. She used an amethyst wallpaper for a mural at a Turnberry Isles penthouse, as well as brick and stone patterns for a variety of Fort Lauderdale and Parkland installations. Fabrics once relegated to the outdoors are also popping up in luxe interiors. “Not only

are the new fabrics kid-friendly, but they are durable enough to be used almost anywhere,” says South Florida designer Sarah Barber-Bazail of B. Design. Stain-resistant, machine-washable, and water-safe options are ideal for indoor built-in seating, such as a breakfast nook banquette. In fact, they’re the perfect solution for functional spaces that act as a hub of family activity. Multiuse areas are top of mind for potential buyers looking for spots that are suitable for work, play, and relaxation. Recent cultural shifts, such as the lockdown implemented during the coronavirus pandemic, have reinforced the idea of the home being the center of our lives. This is in addition to a surge in multigenerational households, where grandparents, parents, and kids—both children and young adults—all share an address. As a result, room names and their FORTLAUDERDALEILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2020

functions have changed, and the need for additional square footage has increased. In this vein, savvy developers are creating condominiums to suit the lifestyles of their buyers in more targeted ways than ever before. Take the new Pinnacle at Peacefield, a Hollywood development for seniors named after the Massachusetts home of U.S. founding father John Adams, where each of the three buildings on Adams Street will function as its own urban village. There will be a separate physical therapy room and a computer lounge so residents can communicate with their families, including tech-driven grandchildren. Similarly, as we continue practicing social distancing, many who want to stay physically 56

fit are opting to exercise at home. While some may be able to dedicate entire rooms to this purpose, others might be looking for alternative solutions. The Italian company Scavolini believes that fitness-integrated bathrooms could be the answer. At Fort Lauderdale’s Adagio condominiums, where Scavolini was responsible for the kitchens and bathroom vanities, the brand-new Gym Space Project, a bathroom/home gym hybrid designed by Mattia Pareschi, combines physical well-being with personal grooming—and eliminates the post-exercise shower commute. This innovation offers wall bars that can be equipped with a variety of options including benches, elastic training bands, weights,

and TRX (total body resistance exercise) systems. “The bathroom furnishing accessories, including lights, shelves, and mirrors, are completely intertwined with the wall unit for a sleek finish that encourages you to exercise regularly and look your best,” says Pareschi. Looking your best goes hand-in-hand with how you dress—and luxury labels that have long led the charge in sartorial trends are working with residential developers to provide buyers with homes that speak to their chic sensibility. A good example is the partnership between Fendi and South Florida designer Fanny Haim on the Fendi Château Residences, a luxury waterfront condominium located in Surfside and created by

Arquitectonica. “We did a synergy fusion of the oceanfront sense of coastal living with the characteristics of Fendi’s high quality,” says Haim. This resulted in residences adorned with luxurious finishes, such as marble bathroom vanities, floors, and walls, as well as exciting public spaces that feel like extensions of a private home, complete with marble sculptures and water features. Two additional trends that seem to be permeating the design lexicon as of late are a return to minimalism and an emphasis on natural light. Alan Cohen of Design House in Dania Beach is working on five spacious Las Olas Boulevard residences, and the owners have all requested a decluttered feel with an eye toward clean lines. “The trend is a 2020 remake of midcentury modern design with a more linear look and no added accents,” Cohen says.

052_RealEstateFLI version2_0920.indd 57

Meanwhile, at The Estates and The Mansions of Acqualina on Sunny Isles Beach, homeowners are channeling a lust for light to craft unique havens throughout the home—including in the bathroom. “Serene private environments that you can call your own are being sought-after and enjoyed,” says Isabel Tragash of STA Architectural Group, who recently created a custom marble tub for a resident of The Mansions, situating it next to expansive windows overlooking the ocean and city. Such tranquil settings at once prioritize privacy and welcome the outdoors in, capturing the essence of the mind-body balance at the core of these trends. Developers, designers, and architects are adapting their work to nature and our changing lifestyles, resulting in environs that encourage us to soak in our surroundings and take pleasure in day-to-day living.« FORTLAUDERDALEILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2020

PORCH

Portraits SOCIALLY DISTANCED PHOTO SHOOTS OFFER A SNAPSHOT INTO THE LIVES OF SOUTH FLORIDA FAMILIES DURING QUARANTINE

By Melissa Puppo | Photography by Heather Holt

As families began spending more time at home during the pandemic, the idea to document our “new normal” through portraits taken from a safe distance spread across social media and online. Lighthouse Point–based photographer Heather Holt started a series entitled “Porch Portraits,” featuring families on their porches, yes, but also on their patios, docks, pools, and boats. This is South Florida, after all. Holt says that her intention behind the project was twofold. “I saw

58

it not only as an opportunity to bring families joy—and give them something to look forward to—but also as a way to give back to the health care workers who were working so hard to help their communities.” She donated a portion of proceeds from the series to a handful of area hospitals and also partnered with a hospital in Queens, New York. In addition, she contributed funds to provide meals to Hope South Florida, Hospitality Helping Hands, ChildNet, and 4Kids.

“Our outlook on life as it has presented these challenges is a positive one,” says Ali Adams. “We know things will bounce back as they always do here in South Florida.”

Adams Family

THE

As a registered nurse in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Ali Adams has been on the front lines of the pandemic. What she’s noticed most are the effects the new restrictions on visitors have had on patients and staff. “Not having family and friends there to hold their hand compounds the sadness and distress in a way I’ve never experienced before,” she says. Although both Ali and her husband, Jesse, who serves as general counsel for SR Technologies, juggle busy work schedules, they prioritize being present for their son, Strake, and daughter, Sunny. As avid outdoor lovers, the family spends time swimming, taking trips to the beach, and going on boat rides to grab takeout. “I have gained a new appreciation for the simple things in life,” says Ali. “I appreciate being home with the ones I love, and now more than ever, I do not take this life for granted. I know how quickly that can all change.”

Branham Family THE

Social distancing guidelines and shutdowns have greatly affected Erin Branham’s business, A2 Events. As the president and founder, she’s pivoted from managing large-scale events to focusing on brand activations and personal development. A2 Events is currently on its way to becoming certified womenowned and is launching a nonprofit fund for the industry. Amid the pandemic, Erin and her husband, Jimmy, who sells real estate for The Keyes Company, began donating meals to local hospitals and supporting small businesses. “We’re creating job opportunities for other people in our industry through the brand ambassador’s program right now, and our next step is to start a foundation for the hospitality industry to continue that work,” says Erin. While quarantine has taken a toll on her company and family, she is cherishing time spent with her daughters, Isabelle and Evelyn. “Jimmy and I have seen our girls become more independent,” notes Erin. “And A2 Events is resilient, so we’re creatively making things happen.”

Schmidt Family THE

Brad and Laine Schmidt are accustomed to hosting weekly dinners and get-togethers for both work and fun because of their respective careers as pastor of CityChurch Fort Lauderdale and co-founder of WheelHaus, and executive coach/founder of Laine Schmidt Coaching. With quarantine guidelines in place, the couple found it difficult to be separated from the community. However, they embraced the transition to working from home and the freedom it allowed them to help their sons, Max and Luke, through this tough time. “Because we were more hands on with the kids’ schoolwork, we were able to pick up on their challenges and strengths that we hadn’t seen before,” says Laine. To make life a bit more enjoyable, the family embarked on a threeweek-long, socially distanced road trip. What Laine appreciates most is how the family can slow down, spend more time outside, eat earlier dinners, be effective at work—and play more Monopoly.

Moskowitz Family THE

When coronavirus cases began spiking in Florida, Leah Moskowitz was left to care for her sons, Sam and Max, while her husband, Jared, attended to business in Tallahassee. As director of emergency management, Jared is in charge of the state’s safety response and spent eight weeks separated from his family. “With two young boys ages 3 and 6, it’s been hard to be at home with them, without school and normal summer activities, but our biggest challenge is not having Jared home with us,” says Leah. In addition to sending meals to area hospitals, Leah and her boys spend time together swimming, watching movies, playing games, and doing puzzles. She says the pandemic “has made us miss Jared more than normal and appreciate the times he has been able to come home to see us. Even though our boys are young, they’ve been really proud of Jared’s work.” 62

Galuppi Family

THE

Known for their three restaurants in South Florida, Lauren and Grant Galuppi felt the brunt of the state’s shutdown in March and April with the temporary closing of Nelson’s Diner, Galuppi’s, and Galuppi’s 620 Subs n’ Salads. Their employee count dwindled from hundreds to double digits, which was the hardest part, notes Lauren. During the crisis, they donated meals to health care workers at hospitals and to fire and police departments. While they’ve been navigating stressful closures and reopenings, and trying to revive business within the county’s guidelines, the couple is thankful for the additional downtime with their daughter, Romi, and son, Kobi. “Our family time was always pressed into weekends and a few weeknights, so due to the increased time at home, we have been able to do fun projects,” says Lauren. Activities have ranged from growing butterflies to building outside forts and making shadow monsters at night. «

EAT DRINK ENTERTAINING

Better on a BOARD What do thinly sliced meats, spreadable cheeses, fresh baguettes, and pickable fruits all have in common? They’re the ingredients for one gorgeous charcuterie board. This culinary tradition dates back to fifteenth-century France, and the word “charcuterie” is derived from the French terms chair, meaning “meat,” and cuite, meaning “cooked.” These artfully plated boards, which are perfect for posh picnicking, have become one of the latest food crazes across social media. Luckily for locals, Fort Lauderdale resident Alexandra Kamper of Kamper’s Kitchen offers charcuterie boards, as well as beautifully presented grazing tables, datenight dinner boxes, and even charcuterie workshops. Kamper, who spent seven years as a wedding and special events coordinator for Hugh’s Catering in South Florida, notes that she’s always been interested in food presentation. “My passion for culinary styling and unconditional love of cheese eventually sparked a hobby that later led me to pursue this boutique side business, blurring the lines between work and play for me,” she says. On the next page, Kamper shares her top tips for crafting a board of your own at home. (kamperskitchen. com) —Melissa Puppo

EAT DRINK Better on a BOARD Continued HERE, ALEXANDRA KAMPER OF KAMPER’S KITCHEN OUTLINES THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF A CHARCUTERIE BOARD

«

Start by arranging three or more of your favorite cheeses on a 12- to 14-inch platter or cutting board. This size board is suitable for four to five guests to snack on. I recommend incorporating a soft, semi-soft, and hard cheese to cover all bases. Some of the guaranteed crowd-pleasers include Brie (soft), Manchego (semi-soft), and Wisconsin white cheddar (hard). Guide your guests by placing the appropriate knife or spreader directly in each cheese on your board. This will make grazing a lot less intimidating for them. No one likes to be the first one to dig in!

Add small ramekins of olives, cornichons, fig jam, or honey next. Don’t be afraid to move things around a few times to distribute the color on your board. I’ve been known to rearrange a bowl of olives five to six times until I find the perfect spot.

«

« 66

peaches, winter pomegranate, or snap peas in the spring. Keep in mind that you are going for a variety of color and texture.

Last but not least: garnish. This is the most important step that will tie your work of art together. Fresh sage, basil leaves, or a few sprigs of rosemary are ideal. And, of course, the secret to creating a quick and beautiful board is to not overthink. It may not look beautiful right away, but you can always rearrange as you go.

«

«

Behind all great cheese boards are gorgeous fruits and veggies. Start with a handful of blackberries, a cluster of green grapes, or beautiful sweet cherries. Try to incorporate produce that is in season, such as summer

and pepper pistachios, candied pecans, and dark chocolate sea salt caramels. Fill in the gaps with whatever you’ve got hanging out in the pantry.

«

Pick up a three-pack variety of charcuterie meats. After you’ve got your cheeses spaced out on the board, start to distribute the meats here and there. The rule of thumb is 1 to 2 ounces per person. Step it up a notch by rolling your prosciutto or folding your salami slices in half and then in half again to resemble a “salami flower.” It looks pretty, and everyone will think you really went the extra mile.

With her keen eye for presentation, Alexandra Kamper makes any vision come to life, from special event grazing tables to breakfast boards and more.

Finally, gather some of your favorite “fillers.” Some of my go-tos include Trader Joe’s fig and olive crackers, sesame breadsticks, a sliced French baguette, dried apricots, salt

Rino Cerbone leads a double life, serving as both the chef-owner of the buzzy Italian eatery Heritage in Fort Lauderdale’s MASS District, as well as the lead singer of popular rock bands Stellar Revival and Westview. However, that doesn’t mean diners can expect an impromptu concert during their meals. “I keep it like Batman-Bruce Wayne,” says Cerbone of his singing chops and culinary skills. “When I’m at the restaurant, it’s my stage. I want to be known as a chef who takes his craft seriously.” Hailing from a long line of Italian restaurateurs—his family has owned redsauce joint Pizza Time since the 1970s—Cerbone sees his menu at Heritage as a love letter to generations-old recipes updated with his own complex flavors. EAT + DRINK OFF THE VINE

WOMEN in Wine

Get to know the new generation of FEMALE winemakers leading vineyards to success By Mark Spivak

Nearly 40 years ago, professor Linda Bartoshuk’s research into the physiology of taste electrified the wine world. She determined that certain people have a higher concentration of taste receptors on their tongues, and she designated those individuals as “supertasters.” She also found that supertasters are more likely to be women. If you accept the theory that women are better tasters than men, why aren’t there more female winemakers? The simple answer is that the wine business has historically been a boys’ club. This tends to be true in Europe even today, where many female winemakers owe their position to family ownership and a lack of male siblings. Starting in the 1980s in California, however, some women began

Theresa Heredia of Gary Farrell

to rise to superstar status: Helen Turley (Marcassin), Eileen Crane (Domaine Carneros), Heidi Barrett (consultant for Dalla Valle and Screaming Eagle), Merry Edwards, Zelma Long (Simi), and Sally Johnson (Pride Mountain Vineyards). These trailblazers led the way for a new generation of artisans in California and elsewhere, including the newest names to watch, listed below. Theresa Heredia, Gary Farrell, Sonoma, California: Heredia was a PhD candidate in chemistry with an emphasis on enology at U.C. Davis before she left the program to follow her passion for winemaking. After working at Domaine de Montille in Burgundy as well as California’s Saintsbury and Joseph Phelps, she joined Gary Farrell in 2012. She focuses on allowing the character of each of the winery’s Russian River vineyard sites to express itself. (garyfarrellwinery.com) Maggie Kruse, Jordan, Sonoma, California: Kruse started at Jordan in 2006 and replaced retiring winemaker Rob Davis last year; both were heavily influenced by André Tchelistcheff, the legendary California winemaker who consulted at Jordan from the beginning. “André always said that balanced, low-alcohol wines age better,” Kruse says, and finding that balance is her main objective. (jordanwinery.com)

INMAN FAMILY WINES

Clockwise from above: The Jordan winery in Sonoma, California; Maggie Kruse; Kathleen Inman; Remy Drabkin.

Remy Drabkin, Remy Wines, Willamette Valley, Oregon: Drabkin was a bit of a winemaking wunderkind. She decided to become a vintner at the age of 8, worked her first harvest at 14, and founded her namesake winery at 25. She specializes in single-vineyard wines made from Italian grape varieties seldom seen in Oregon such as Barbera, Dolcetto, Sangiovese, and Lagrein. (remywines.com)

Kelly Urbanik Koch, Macari Vineyards, North Fork of Long Island, New York: Originally from California, Koch worked at Maison Louis Jadot in France with the legendary winemaker Jacques Lardière. She journeyed to Long Island in 2006 and helped build Macari into an internationally recognized estate specializing in Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc. (macariwines.com) Ashley Heisey, Long Meadow Ranch, Napa, California: Lovingly restored by the Hall family, Long Meadow Ranch is committed to sustainability and famous for its Farmstead Restaurant, which uses ingredients cul-

tivated on the property. Heisey has worked in vineyards around the world as well as California (notably Far Niente and Opus One). As vice president of winemaking at Long Meadow, she leads a team of artisans making wines that reflect the ranch’s diverse vineyard sites. (longmeadowranch.com)

COURTESY OF MACARI VINEYARDS

Kathleen Inman, Inman Family Wines, Sonoma, California: Inman founded her eponymous winery in 2000. Her style ranges from playful (Endless Crush rosé) to serious (a bevy of single-vineyard Pinot Noirs from select sites). She concentrates on what she terms “sensitive farming,” which encompasses sustainability and environmental responsibility. (inmanfamilywines.com)

Alexandra Boudrot, Pierre Sparr, Alsace, France: Born in Burgundy to a winemaking family, Boudrot studied viticulture and winemaking at the University of Dijon before moving to Alsace. She started at Pierre Sparr in 2015 and is now responsible for overseeing both vineyard selection and cellar work at this historic estate dating to 1680. She also produces a range of wines including Riesling from Grand Cru Schoenenbourg and both Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer from Grand Cru Mambourg. (vins-sparr.com) «

DAN ELLITHORPE

BRILLIANT STRIKE Photographer Dan Ellithorpe is a lifelong fan of extreme weather. His Instagram account, @baseballsizedhail, is full of awesome shots of rain, storms, and lightning. This photo, taken at the Atlantic Trail entrance to the Everglades Conservation Levee, is his all-time favorite. “The satisfaction of capturing something that occurs so quickly and so randomly drives me to keep going, and I have an even greater appreciation for storms than I ever have before,” says Ellithorpe. For this image, he used a Canon Rebel T6i mounted on a tripod and a neutral-density filter. He knew that, given this setup, he’d be able to do a 15-second exposure, thereby greatly improving his chances of snapping the perfect picture. —Alexa Becker
