FROM THE EDITOR

Thank you for picking up a copy of the inaugural issue of Fort Lauderdale Illustrated. We may be new to the market, but we’re magazine veterans who are committed to chronicling the lifestyle, art and design, and extraordinary people of South Florida. Fort Lauderdale Illustrated joins a family of longstanding titles such as Palm Beach Illustrated (68 years), Naples Illustrated (22 years), and Florida Design (30 years). We launched the magazine in recognition of Fort Lauderdale’s vibrant, growing community—and, frankly, because we love spending time here. The arts scene, foodie culture, yachting lifestyle, and glittering skyline are more compelling than ever, and we’re thrilled to celebrate them in these pages. Our cover story this month is on race car driver Hanna Zellers, who, despite her young age (she’s 22), has 200 starts, 70 wins, 61 poles, and 55 podiums under her belt. The Lauderdale-by-the-Sea resident is a tour de force on the track, thanks largely to her adaptability to driving circumstances and her positive attitude. She knows getting to the top takes time and patience, and she’s not afraid to put in the effort required to get there. Read all about this rising star in “Life in the Fast Lane” on page 50. Fort Lauderdale’s yachting culture is showcased throughout the issue. Our fashion editorial, “Out to Sea,” was shot onboard Man of Steel in Fort Lauderdale. Spring’s sexiest seaworthy looks, with new architectural cuts and metallic textures, will get you from the docks to the deck in high style. Turn to page 56 and get inspired for a day on the water. Also this month, we join the party onboard Bella Vita with Michelle Flanigan and Kim Zaffere. The entrepreneurs and friends most definitely fall under the category of “strong women,” and their soiree reflects that. “Girl Power,” on page 66, chronicles their ladies-only gathering to “applaud women supporting women”—an excellent reason to throw a dinner party, if you ask me. Adding to the celebratory vibe was a vibrant menu (I’m obsessed with tuna tartare served in a coconut shell) that reflected Michelle and Kim’s background in hospitality. If you love “mini-superyachts,” check out our automotive and yachting editor’s review of the 90-foot LeVen 90 on page 46. If you prefer your thrills on land, read “Sunshine Superstars,” a roundup of his favorite luxury convertibles, on page 74. This month and every month, expect rich lifestyle content across many categories—style, travel, culture, and food, to name a few—and some surprises as well. It’s part of our way of saying “thank you,” Fort Lauderdale. We’re thrilled to be here.

Magic City NORTH

With two projects planned for Broward, Menin Hospitality transports the taste and vibe of Miami to Fort Lauderdale By Melissa Puppo

marks their first Florida foray north of Miami. The original fast-casual taqueria in South Beach is a local and celebrity favorite, with everyone from Michael B. Jordan to Joe Jonas to Jamie Foxx stopping by. Galbut still remembers the day he and Menin scouted Fort Lauderdale in search of a locale for their future hot spot. “We passed by the riverfront and saw a lot of potential activity,” he says, recalling an almost “war

COURTESY OF MENIN HOSPITALITY

It would seem everything “cool” in Miami is slowly popping up in Fort Lauderdale. As new developments dot the skyline, a record number of Floridians are making this once-sleepy town their home base. Entrepreneurs are also catching on to this momentous shift. Just ask Keith Menin and Jared Galbut, who are bringing two South Beach mainstays to town. The South Florida–born founders of Menin Hospitality have collectively managed and owned more than 20 businesses, with ventures primarily based in Miami and Chicago. Late last year, they announced plans to open Fort Lauderdale outposts of their already popular eatery Bodega Taqueria y Tequila and the boutique hotel concept known as Gale. “We’ve always loved Fort Lauderdale as a city, and we’ve always wanted to have a Bodega in Fort Lauderdale,” says Menin, principal of Menin Hospitality. He and Galbut (who serves as managing principal) are cousins and come from a lineage of hoteliers who have managed properties such as the Shelborne South Beach, which has been family-owned since 1981. They worked the gamut of jobs, from housekeeping to the front desk, before taking on executive roles and starting their own hospitality firm in 2005. Broward’s Bodega

zone” vision of construction between The Wharf and another downtown development. Menin adds, “I turned around and saw this building on the street corner and said to myself, ‘That’s Bodega.’ It had everything we needed; it had the perfect ceiling height, the perfect amount of space, the perfect vibe and essence, and an organic flow from the front to the back.”

Come May, Fort Lauderdale foodies can get a taste of the same quality Mexican fare with a Cuban flair that has garnered numerous accolades over the years—praise due in large part to Bernie Matz, the executive director of culinary for the hospitality group. The famous barbacoa tacos (over a million sold) will be a fixture on the menu as will other go-tos like the al pastor.

“The design and concept will be very similar to South Beach,” Galbut notes, “but I think we’ll have some new tricks up our sleeves to showcase to Fort Lauderdale.” An Airstream fashioned as a food counter will lead to a semi-hidden entrance to a speak-easy lounge for guests who want to extend their happy hour tab. Menin Hospitality is also behind Gale Fort Lauderdale, a 96-room hotel that, as of press time, is set to open this summer. Its sister property has created a name for itself in South Beach since debuting in 2012. The new Gale will celebrate its Fort Lauderdale setting, with luxe rooms showcasing views of the Intracoastal and Atlantic Ocean. (meninhospitality.com)

“This was a place where they could come, create artwork, and just enjoy Florida,” continues Shavloske. “The Bartletts were not slave to fashion. They had very much their own personal aesthetic.” Visitors can view works by Frederic and Evelyn while on guided tours of the home. From the iron railings sourced from New Orleans to distinct Egyptian and Caribbean flourishes, the house itself is a pastiche of influences, explains Shavloske. “Frederic always said that he was a sponge, that he took in all kinds of artistic styles and then put them together into his own unique style.” Bonnet House’s artistic heritage informs its current programming. In addition to public painting classes, fine artist members can paint en plein air in the gardens at their leisure. There are also seasonal outdoor concerts DAVID WARREN

Stepping through the royal blue front door of Bonnet House Museum & Gardens does not signal a step back in time but rather an entrée into a wondrous world of imagination, one that feels as relevant now as it did 100 years ago. Built in 1920, it has evolved from a private home to a cultural gem the entire community can enjoy. As CEO Patrick Shavloske notes, Bonnet House’s roots greatly impact how visitors interact with the property, which includes the main home and varied garden landscapes. It all began in 1919 when Frederic Clay Bartlett and his wife Helen Birch received 35 acres on Fort Lauderdale Beach as a wedding present from Helen’s father. Frederic, who was an established artist, began sketching designs for the home. Helen died in 1925, and Frederic remarried Evelyn Fortune Lilly in 1931. “There was a real artistic synergy between Evelyn and Frederic, and the house looks as it does today because of her,” says Shavloske. Although untrained, Evelyn was an artist in her own right. Bonnet House was Evelyn and Frederic’s winter estate, and they devoted as much energy to decorating the home as they did to painting.

and an International Orchid & Garden Festival, scheduled for April 4-5. This year’s highlight, however, is the Centennial Soiree on April 25, which will boast a Jazz Age feel and feature art as entertainment. Perhaps the most notable aspect of Bonnet House is that it’s an authentic reflection of the Bartletts’ life, with 99 percent of its items original to the property. For example, Evelyn’s love of animals is apparent, from the Purina dog bowl in the drawing room to the birdcage and antique carousel menagerie in the courtyard. Frederic’s numerous creative endeavors are on display, too, including his portraits of Evelyn (look for the one of her with two left feet, a humorous hint at her poor dancing skills), hand-painted ceilings, and intricate shell work. “If you came and saw one of their home movies, they would expect you to pay admission with a set of shells,” says Shavloske. He adds that honoring the world in which the Bartletts lived is paramount to the Bonnet House mission. “If the Bartletts came back today, they would feel right at home.” (bonnethouse.org)

Q&A

GIVE ME A BEAT

WE CHAT WITH MARCUS ABOUT BLACK VIOLIN'S LATEST ALBUM AT FORT LAUDERDALE ILLUSTRATED.COM/ BLACKVIOLIN

Musician Kev Marcus has always sought to break stereotypes. Growing up in Fort Lauderdale, he gravitated toward the violin and found a musical compatriot in violist Wil Baptiste. Together, they merged their classical training and hip-hop influences to form Black Violin. They’ve since released three albums, including 2019’s Take the Stairs, and are committed to sharing their genre-defying sound with audiences across the country. FLI recently caught up with Marcus to discuss influences and more. (blackviolin.net) —M.M. FLI: When did you realize you could do this for a living? Marcus: When we won Showtime at the Apollo. It is the hardest crowd in the world—they boo you off the stage if they don’t like you. The first four contestants who were on the talent show with us got booed off the stage. We were staring at our [instruments] and were like man, I don’t know. Then we went out there and won three shows straight and became 2005 Apollo legends. That was when we looked at each other, pulled out our phones, called our jobs, and quit. It was still a hard climb from there, but that was the aha moment because they didn’t boo us off the stage and we earned their respect, so we felt like we could play anywhere. Who are your favorite classical composers? I love late Romantics, so Beethoven would be on my list. I love Chevalier, wow. Bach is the OG. … We have a lot of Dvorák on this new album. We have a song called “Serenade,” which is Dvorák’s “Serenade for Strings,” 22

but we put a beat to it. We made it breathe and have a heartbeat as if a conductor is conducting it. It sounds like it can live on a classical station even though there’s a trap, hip-hop beat underneath it. What about a favorite hip-hop artist or producer? Timbaland is why we became producers. He had a very strong influence on us and how our music has grown too. Pharrell is groundbreaking and does amazing stuff as well. Billie Eilish’s brother [Finneas O’Connell], phew, he’s killing it. I love how he produced her project where less is more. And less is always more, and the really good producers know how to execute that really well. I love artists who put a message to the music. I think truly gifted artists can move you in multiple ways, not just make you shake your butt. They can inspire you or take you to a whole other mood or vibe you didn’t even know you had. And that’s what true art is. True art can give you an emotion that you didn’t know you had.

Come From Away, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Fort Lauderdale, April 7-19 This heartwarming musical brings audiences to the hours and days immediately after 9/11, when American-bound planes were detoured to Canada and stranded passengers and crew members found comfort in the town of Gander, Newfoundland. French KISS By Katherine Lande If any fashion house is the authority on color, it’s Hermès. The French label has amassed more than 75,000 silk color references in its archives in Lyon and adds hundreds to its library each season. It comes as no surprise then that artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas decided to launch Hermès Beauty with Rouge Hermès, a collection of lipsticks in 24 shades, including—yes—the inimitable Orange Boîte. Infused with white mulberry extract and lightly scented with notes of sandalwood, arnica, and angelica, the lipsticks ($68 each; refills $42) apply velvety smooth with a weightless feel in either satin or matte finishes. Now the Hermès Birkin bag, lacquered cuff, or printed silk scarf has its own accessory: a matching lip steeped in the wearer’s personality.

Natural Selection Pikaia Lodge is a highly evolved, non-cruise alternative to experiencing one of Earth’s ultimate BUCKET-LIST DESTINATIONS By Paul Rubio A visit to the remote Galápagos Islands is a veritable rite of passage for world travelers. Located more than 500 nautical miles west of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean, this ecologically diverse archipelago functions as a living museum of natural history—a mind-boggling foreign landscape where plants and animals have evolved for centuries without human interference.

035_ESCAPE_0420.indd 35

For the most part, even high-end travel to this remote area has typically entailed elements of roughing it: Pricey-yet-outdated expedition ships showcase Charles Darwin’s fantasy islands with an understanding that luxury lies in the destination, not the five-star accommodations. But that’s all changing thanks to the boutique Pikaia Lodge, a 14-unit design sensation situated between a pair of extinct volcanic FORTLAUDERDALEILLUSTRATED.COM | APRIL 2020

The wellappointed Pikaia Lodge features amenities like an infinityedge pool with panoramic ocean vistas (above), the Japanesestyle Sumaq Spa (upper right), and accomodations with floor-toceiling views of Santa Cruz Island (right). Look forward to excursions to Bartolomé Island and the landmark Pinnacle Rock (below).

craters on Santa Cruz Island, at the center of the bucket-list island chain. A welcomed disrupter to Galápagos tourism, Pikaia rises above one of the Galápagos’ few inhabited swathes—of the islands’ 3,028-squaremile landmass, humans occupy only 3 percent— and delivers all the amenities one would expect in a top-tier lodge, plus easy access to iconic locales and wildlife-rich surrounds. High in the cloud forests of southern Santa Cruz, Pikaia stands some 1,500 feet above sea level, promising 360-degree views of the Galápagos’ landand-sea splendor as well as design that itself is a sight to behold. An enclave of oversized glass panes, arched white walls, and prolific open-air common spaces, this minimalist marvel seamlessly blends with the proximate lush foliage and 36

oceanic blues below. The grounds are strewn with artistic nods to Darwin and science, such as sculptures of DNA double helixes and statues of Pikaia Gracilens, the oldest known ancestor to vertebrates, from which the lodge gains its name. Sustainability has been meticulously woven into Pikaia’s aesthetic and framework, best exemplified by its natural lava stone floors and walls, rainwater-collecting rooftops, and overall carbon neutrality. But Pikaia understands that you aren’t coming to the Galápagos to simply hang out in a fabulous hotel—though we wouldn’t judge should you decide to spend copious hours at the lounger-lined infinity pool or in your en suite Jacuzzi overlooking the cloud forest. Ultimately, you’re here for the nature, and it’s nature you’ll get. The experience at Pikaia plays out as multiday, all-inclusive packages—available from as few as four days/three nights to as many as eight days/seven nights—where guests engage in land excursions on Santa Cruz Island, visit neighboring isles on one of the house yachts, and enjoy five-star excess back at the lodge. A typical day may include a sail to North Seymour Island for an extraordinary hike alongside the frigate birds and blue-footed boobies, followed by an early afternoon snorkel among octopuses, white-tipped reef sharks, fur seals, and countless schools of vibrantly colored tropical fish. Another may begin by exploring the craggy, lava-hewn coastline of Sullivan Bay on Santiago Island, then hopping in a zodiac

to search for and swim with penguins and sea lions, before climbing to the top of Bartolomé Island to take in the grandeur of Pinnacle Rock, the symbol of the Galápagos. Excursions vary by week, as trips to specific islands within national parklands are strictly regulated and assigned with little advance notice for non–cruise ship operators. Regardless, a new adventure beckons every day, alternating between jaunts at sea and on land with a dedicated professional naturalist who remains with the group for the full package duration. At a minimum, expect to snap numerous photos of the many giant tortoises (aka Galápagos, from which the archipelago gains its name) inhabiting Santa Cruz’s rolling hills, including the grounds around Pikaia. Look forward to downing a local beer in the town of Puerto Ayora and blowing up your social media with images of red-pouched frigate birds, amphibious marine iguanas, ubiquitous orange Sally Lightfoot crabs, and blue-footed boobies hamming it up for the camera. Of course, you’d see the same on a Galápagos cruise, but your pre- and post-excursion experiences would definitely not be the same. In lieu of ship cabins and cramped common spaces at sea, a sumptuous home base lends to greater leisure pursuits, from decadent multicourse meals in Evolution Restaurant (of Relais & Châteaux standard, no less) to lengthy treatments in the Japanese-inspired Sumaq Spa. On land, guests don’t endure a relentless 5:30 a.m. wake-up call nor the hectic pace of cruise ships’ twice-daily

excursions. On the contrary, Pikaia offers a slower stride for absorbing the Galápagos’ riches. Pikaia’s model works for some but not for others, especially those seeking to discover as much as possible of the archipelago’s 18 main islands. Admittedly, Pikaia can only access islands that are within a reasonable distance from Santa Cruz, thereby excluding sights like the nesting colonies of waved albatross on Española Island and the extreme volcanic landscapes of Fernandina Island. That being said, Pikaia succeeds in its mission to avoid the ordinary and create a balance between active and leisurely pursuits. The pampering is best suited to those wanting ample time to reflect on Galápagos grandeur, not necessarily type As hoping to island hop at a rapid-fire pace. Overall, Pikaia opens up one of Earth’s greatest destinations to a new generation of travelers seeking a combination of nature and luxury, with an emphasis toward the latter. (pikaialodge.com) «

KEYLAXATION

Bungalows Key Largo offers a chic approach to all-inclusive By Paul Rubio Think all-inclusive resort, and Mexico or the Dominican Republic typically come to mind. But a new offering in Florida’s Upper Keys is bringing Key Largo into the all-inclusive fold—in the best way possible. Say hello to Bungalows Key Largo, an adults-only (21-plus) property that pairs the amenities of an exclusive island retreat with the laid-back lifestyle of the Florida Keys. Bungalows is a far cry from the low-brow, all-inclusive properties that have become synonymous with budget Caribbean travel. Rather, it’s a detail-oriented escape with high-end amenities, top-shelf liquor, and personality-driven restaurants. Located on the Keys’ bayside just beyond Mile Marker 99, Bungalows is accessed from a small turn-off that weaves through dense-yet-manicured foliage. After valeting your own wheels, you’ll be escorted on a pastel blue golf cart through the resort’s matching blue wooden gates. Zigzagging along palm tree–laced trails, you’ll cross paths with the Beach House, home to an array of restaurants, and a massive reclining Buddha that underscores Bungalows’ The alfresco tranquility mantra. More vacasoaking tub and tion bliss awaits across a colrain shower lection of 135 white-washed bungalows, each boasting modern furnishings and a private garden with an alfresco soaking tub and rain shower. After settling into your romantic bungalow, it’s time to explore an intoxicating world of fun-in-the-sun, designed to make you never ever want

Clockwise from far left: The waterfront bungalows’ patios; the Sunset Pool; explore Key Largo by kayak, paddleboard, or bike; entrance to the Zen Garden Spa.

to leave. Choose between two pool and Jacuzzi areas or a beachfront lounger to destress and work on your tan. The all-inclusive policy means there’s no reason to decline another watermelon margarita while soaking, sunbathing, or enjoying live music sessions. Thematic eateries like toes-in-the-sand Mexican restaurant Sea Señor and Fish Tales—the design of which recalls Il Riccio on Capri—are idyllic for long, memorable meals and languid, cocktail-heavy days. Floating tiki boats head out twice daily for tours along the bay; you can also choose your own bayside adventure via paddleboard, water trike, or kayak, admiring the setting while keeping an eye out for dolphins and manatees. To counter the eating and drinking excess, consider a scenic ride on a beach cruiser (every bungalow comes with two) or get fit in the palapatopped outdoor gym. Early risers can look forward to morning group yoga and fitness classes, which range from hatha and vinyasa to a sunrise stretch. Alternatively, treat yourself to a few hours—or more—in the Asian-themed spa. Relax to the sounds of the wind passing through the bamboo gardens, unwind with a eucalyptus steam, or detox in the Himalayan salt room before expert therapists put your body at ease. Finally, should curiosity or the odd case of cabin fever push you beyond Bungalows’ boundaries, the property provides complimentary transportation within a 5-mile radius. We wouldn’t blame you for wanting to check out the superb snorkeling at nearby John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park or chartering a fishing boat to learn why this region lays claim to America’s best sportfishing. But no matter how you choose to spend your days and nights at Bungalows Key Largo, you’ll quickly fall for this harbinger of American all-inclusive chic and its unique marriage of unapologetic indulgence and Florida Keys–style relaxation. Sleek RETREAT

COURTESY OF THE BRAZILIAN COURT

A stylish yet inviting getaway awaits in refreshed rooms at this storied HOME AWAY FROM HOME By Skye Sherman A comfortingly cloistered enclave since its 1926 debut, Palm Beach’s Brazilian Court Hotel is beloved by visitors and locals alike, its maze of courtyard nooks a favored host for lazy reading sessions or discreet tête-à-têtes. The boutique retreat’s intimate setting and residential location—hidden in plain sight, barely distinguishable from neighboring historic estates—grant every guest a sense of belonging. But unlike at home, you don’t have to leave the premises to book a blowout, dine under acclaimed chef Daniel Boulud, or request

poolside chaise delivery of White Cosmopolitans (the orchid ice ball is particularly restorative after a dip). Part-andparcel staycation amenities like turn-down service, bicycles, and a VIP beach experience delivered by the hotel’s Cadillac Escalade come included, too. Now, thanks to a refresh by Lauren Hastings of West Palm Beach’s LSI Designs, the Brazilian Court is all the more au courant. Its selection of studios and one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites exude a pedigreed Euroterranean ambience that also champions the modern verve of Palm Beach. With a nod to tradition and an eye on contemporary style, Hastings has married long-standing architecture by Rosario Candela (and, later, Maurice Fatio) with modestly funky furnishings and art, including black-and-white prints from British photographer Terry O’Neill. “During the design development process, we knew black-and-white, large-scale photographs would be the perfect complement to the transitional elements of the room,” explains Hastings. “We tossed around a million

ideas, and then one of the hotel owners suggested looking into Terry O’Neill’s catalog of images and we ran with it. The ultimate goal of this redesign is to curate the unexpected and create a wow factor to each room—and his portraits fit that bill perfectly.” Like the rest of O’Neill’s oeuvre, the portraits selected for display capture celebrities in candid moments and unconventional settings, such as Audrey Hepburn napping poolside while filming in Saint-Tropez and Elton John playing a piano-turned-bar in his Boeing jet while on tour in 1974. Feminine touches like crisp white linens and a silky wisteria wall panel with pops of pink and lavender soften the new rooms’ rich mahogany, leather, marble, and brass components. Along with green velvet headboards and sofas—a bow to the tropical flora blanketing the property—the end result is refined yet warmly welcoming, a wedding of modernity and timelessness. HIGH ROAD

Back to BLACK Rolls-Royce has given its Cullinan SUV the Black Badge treatment, but beware: It will take you to the DARK SIDE By Howard Walker In the immortal words of intergalactic archvillain Darth Vader: “You don’t know the power of the Dark Side.” Tonight we’re experiencing its full force while heading to a galaxy far, far away. That is, Miami after dark. Forget about the postcard-perfect Magic City and the neon-lit, teeny-bikini hedonism that is South Beach. We’re in Wynwood. A decade ago, this 10-block strip between the Intracoastal and I-95 was a testimony to urban decay—boarded-up windows, razor-wire fencing, snarling junkyard dogs, and all. It’s still gritty, but crumbling cinder block has been transformed into a vast display of eclectic street art. The epicenter, Wynwood Walls, has seen close to 100,000 square feet of largely abandoned warehouse walls turned into a gallery of mural art by creatives from around the globe. By day, tourists come by the thousands to gaze in jaw-on-the-floor wonder at the works, refuel at the tragically hip cafés and restaurants,

and shop at the au courant boutiques. But late at night, when the crowds have long returned to their cruise ships and Art Deco hostelries, the edginess returns. This is no place to be driving a $400,000 Rolls-Royce. Thankfully, this is no regular Rolls bedecked with shimmering Flying Ladies and an aura of plutocratic pomp and Grey Poupon circumstance. This is Lord Vader’s ride. This is the new Cullinan Black Badge. Since 2016 and the introduction of the Wraith Black Badge two-door coupe, Rolls has been giving its lineup the full back-to-black Sith treatment. The aim? To appeal to a new generation of younger, more diverse, self-made buyers in want of a less cookie-cutter design. It’s been working. The average age of a Rolls customer is now below 40, with one in five opting for a Black Badge model. With this new Cullinan Black Badge, the ratio is expected to jump to one in three. See the Cullinan BB loitering outside the hyper-trendy Wynwood Kitchen & Bar and it radiates a menacing “don’t mess with me” attitude. Nearly every piece of chrome has been blackened. Even the Spirit of Ecstasy Flying Lady has a full-body coating of high-gloss black chrome. Up front, that iconic Parthenon grille has received a Vader noir makeover. In profile, it has the effect of making this sky-high-roofed SUV appear less top-heavy and lower to the ground. Having towering, blackrimmed, 22-inch forged alloys at each corner doesn’t hurt either. Climb aboard and the cabin is a sea of high-gloss carbon fiber that stretches across the dash, center console, and doors. I love the blacked-

out clock and strip of contrasting searingyellow piping that rings the dash top. But the visual highlight of this cavernous interior is the Cullinan’s Starlight Headliner with its 1,344 fiber-optic ends that replicate a starry night. If that alone weren’t cool enough, there’s also a “Shooting Star” feature that randomly uses groups of eight brighter fiber optics to dart across the ceiling. All this might be considered window dressing if it weren’t for the upgrades in performance, handling, and braking that come with the Black Badge specs. The stock Cullinan’s mighty 6.75-liter twin-turbo V-12 gets a 29-hp boost to take the new output to a nice round 600 hp. There’s also an extra 37 lb-ft of torque on tap to lift it to 664 lb-ft.

Now when you squeeze the throttle, you’ll rush to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds, down from 5.2. More aggressive transmission shifting only heightens the Rolls’ athletic, urgent feel. Late at night is certainly the best time to cruise Miami; there’s less traffic, better views of that twinkling skyline, and more chances to feel the Cullinan’s hyperdrive force. Yes, the hushed, silent running is still there. So too is the magic-carpet ride. But there’s a more dynamic character here that truly heightens the allure of this flagship SUV. As Lord Vader would say: “Impressive. Most impressive.” «

Into the SHALLOWS

With its skinny draft, LeVen’s gorgeous new mini-superyacht will take you places others fear to go By Howard Walker When it comes to navigating Florida’s depth-deprived waters, the sagest advice I ever received was from an old-salt sailor buddy: “When you see the pelicans’ toenails, chances are you’re gonna run aground.” For most of us Sunshine State mariners, it’s not a matter of if you hit bottom, but when. That’s why we have those guys from TowBoatUS prowling around, ready, willing, and able to extract us from many a unyielding sandbar. So, when a boatbuilder creates a mini-superyacht designed to shrug off the shallow waters of the Bahamas, Keys, and Gulf Coast, it must be applauded. The 90-foot LeVen 90 comes courtesy of LeVen Yachts, a joint venture between Fort Lauderdale–based YachtCreators, legendary Dutch designers Vripack, and famed Dutch shipyard Van der Valk, where the yacht was built. With a depth of just 4 feet, 6 inches, this super-sleek, allaluminum performance yacht can shimmy into challenging anchorages

or reach sugar-white sand beaches where others fear to sail. Its secret? The first noncommercial use of German-made Voith Linear jet nozzles. Proven on gritty commercial and military vessels, the system places the props in tapered surrounds mounted in tunnels set into the hull. In addition to protecting the props and reducing draft, the design aims to lower noise and vibration while improving fuel efficiency. Clever stuff. LeVen (which translates to “life” in Dutch) is the brainchild of Floridian entrepreneur Lucas Silva, who was looking for a yacht to cruise with his extended family to the Exumas island chain in the Bahamas. Up until 2017, Silva owned a 121-foot superyacht called Nono. His family loved its big-boat creature comforts, including plenty of storage for water toys. But Silva craved the flexibility of a smaller yacht to explore the Bahamian shallows. He traded Nono in for a 50-footer. “With the 50, we enjoyed the simplicity of use, the connection with the water, the agility, and the reduced draft,” he told me during the LeVen 90’s world debut at last year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. “We created the LeVen so my family and friends can experience the best of both worlds.” It’s not just a shallow draft that sets this superyacht apart—it’s the astonishing amount of entertaining space. Take the flybridge, which measures more than 40 feet long. You could land a Learjet on it. Not to mention, there are loungers, cushions, and stretch-out beds galore.

Then there’s the main deck. Full-width doors open up the main salon to a huge rear lanai so that the entire area is perfectly suited to alfresco get-togethers. And instead of the forward end of the salon being used as a helm station, the space becomes a full-width eat-in galley with a large central island and bar stools. Press a button and the vast forward window lowers to make the most of those Bahamian breezes. Below deck there are four en suite staterooms for guests and an additional two cabins for crew. The yacht’s generous 22-foot beam ensures no shortage of stretch-out room, either. For quiet nights at anchor, the LeVen 90 has a bank of lithium batteries that charge up during the day through the hardtop-mounted solar panels. They’re able to power the air-conditioning along with the

046_HIGHSEAS_0420.indd 47

yacht’s main systems for up to 12 hours, avoiding the annoying hum of a generator. A pair of whisper-quiet, 1,900-hp MTU V-12s will push the yacht to a top speed of 26 knots. With a 3,170-gallon fuel capacity, the range is around 400 nautical miles, meaning you can make it from Fort Lauderdale to Nassau and back. As for pricing, you’ll drop around $9 million for this beauty, which is, quite possibly, the ultimate Florida/Bahamas mini-superyacht. Pelican viewing has never been better. «

WEALTH

INVESTING

DEAL OR NO DEAL?

Unpacking the benefits and risks of investing in qualified opportunity zones By Judy Martel A little-known provision in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that rewards those who put money into economically distressed urban areas in exchange for a tax break is causing some controversy. Investors who want to avoid unwant-

ed capital gains taxes on the sale of property or investments can instead reinvest the profits into local projects in government-designated qualified opportunity zones that will allow them to defer or, in some cases, eliminate payment of the capital gains tax. In one sense, the incentive is nothing new in the tax world, according to Neil H. Buchanan, an economist and tax professor at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. “It’s a specific version of the most generic thing out there, which is to give people a tax break to do something good,” he says. “For years, economists have been studying these types of tax incentives, and it seems that all too frequently the money could have been better spent in ways that would have created more economic development or jobs.”

The overriding question for economists is whether the taxpayer would have invested in the economically distressed opportunity zone without the tax incentive. Economists use the term “decision-making on the margin” to describe the type of investor who might be enticed by some sort of benefit in exchange for risk—whether that be a tax incentive or some other method to create a higher return. For example, any investor could put money in a bank account that pays a low interest rate, with no chance to earn more but also no possibility of loss. Sweetening the pot with something like a tax incentive might move the investor “off the margin.” The difficulty for economists lies in determining who that investor is, versus those who would have put their money into the riskier investment anyway but are happy to take

48 FORT LAUDERDALE ILLUSTRATED

048_WEALTH_0420.indd 48

3/12/20 9:41 AM

the benefit regardless, notes Buchanan. “In that case, the question is why give billionaires a tax break they don’t need and which will not cause them to do anything beyond what they were already going to do?” The biggest controversy in the news around the opportunity zones, however, isn’t about whether the tax incentives create enough jobs or lift the areas economically, but rather about the area itself. There are accusations that opportunity zones are expanding outside of impoverished areas to include “poverty-adjacent or poverty-adjacent-adjacent” regions, says Buchanan. With the widening perimeters, money isn’t necessarily deployed where it’s most needed, while the risk for investors is reduced in the less poverty-stricken areas, he adds. Accountability on the back end is lackluster in many of the cases where luxury apartment buildings and office towers are going up in opportunity zones that critics charge are not economically distressed and therefore not in need

of tax subsidies for development. Nevertheless, unless the law is tightened and clarified, rich investors who meet the qualifications and time requirements can eliminate or defer taxes on capital gains even when they cash out of the opportunity zone investment, says Buchanan. They can put the profits from the sale of a business, for example, back into a different opportunity zone and “the whole thing gets rolled forward into a tax-advantaged deal,” he adds. It might sound like the investor gets all the perks with opportunity zones, but Buchanan cautions that there are downsides similar to those involved with any risky investment. The law on opportunity zones is “a big, complicated set of provisions” requiring expert advice, he says. “Identify potential landmines—that’s what a

good tax advisor will tell you. There are all kinds of ways investments can be risky, and the idea behind opportunity zones is to say that investing in impoverished areas is a high-risk investment, so in return, here’s a benefit that might make the difference between deciding to invest or not. But it’s good financial practice with any investment to figure out if it fits with your risk tolerance.” «

I’M A WILD CARD.

It makes me extra versatile because I have to adapt really quickly to different things.”

even thousand race fans are settling into their seats at the Homestead-Miami Speedway as 22-year-old Hanna Zellers warms up the cherry red TLM Racing/FITTEAM Porsche 997 GT3-R cup car on the track below. Tires primed and settings maximized, she returns to Garage 30, trading tips and technical specs with co-driver and car owner Jeronimo Guzman. Then there’s a throng of fans to greet, VIPs to schmooze, media interviews to give, and selfies to snap. It’s a lot to take in, but Zellers is unfazed. Of the 90 drivers on today’s FARA (Formula and Automobile Racing Association) Miami 500 roster, Zellers is one of only four women—a distinction laden with a whole host of sexist notions. “People just expect you to not be good or not be quick,” she says. “I have to jump through extra hoops more often than the guys to achieve my dream.” Zellers tells it like it is, so you believe her when she says that, unlike some other female drivers out there, “becoming” Danica Patrick—the most successful woman in the history of professional racing—has never been part of her dream. Still, she admits that as a kid growing up in Indiana, watching Patrick fight her way to the front to lead the 2005 Indianapolis 500 made Zellers think, “I’m gonna do that, too.” Born into a family of racing fans (her parents eschewed a traditional honeymoon, opting to attend the famed Skip Barber Racing School to celebrate their nuptials instead), Zellers started kart racing for fun at age 7. “She has a lot of energy,” her folks told bystanders who balked at the sight of a little girl behind a kart wheel. “We gotta find some way to channel it.” Zellers attempted other pastimes—volleyball, baseball—but none stuck. “I was always too aggressive for those sports,” Zellers says. “I got in trouble for it.” In racing, that aggression became an asset. By age 9, she was racing competitively and began qualifying for major kart competitions, frequently landing atop the podium and bringing home championships. In 2013, Zellers earned her racing license from the 52

same school where her parents honeymooned. She jumped from karting to the Sports Car Club of America and tried her hand at Formula One cars, followed by a stint driving NASCAR-style stock cars. After transitioning to Le Mans Prototype 3 endurance races, Zellers began competing on the FARA circuit, which features a mix of sports cars including Porsches, Ferraris, BMWs, McLarens, and Lamborghinis. With more than 200 starts, 70 wins, 61 poles, and 55 podiums to her name, Zellers gets it done no matter the make of the car she’s in. “I just follow the opportunities and drive whatever it is that’s put in front of me,” she says. “I’m a wild card. It makes me extra versatile because I have to adapt really quickly to different things.” That versatility is one of the reasons Zellers was selected in 2019 as the first woman to participate in the Porsche Young Driver Academy, a program that identifies the racing world’s most outstanding new talent. “With Hanna, we saw a driver who’s got the talent and is putting in the effort,” Rob Owens, Porsche’s OneMake program manager explains. “It just made perfect sense to bring her into the program.” But occasionally, even the best talent can’t win the day. Sometimes you’re at the mercy of the car. At the Miami 500, the Zellers/Guzman team was in third place when a rear axle failure ended their racing day after lap 54. Zellers was understandably disappointed, but she remained undeterred. “That’s racing,” she says. “You just get ready for the next one.” (The “next one” for Zellers and Guzman is the FARA Sunset 300, which will take place in Homestead April 13-14.) Racing in Homestead isn’t where Zellers’ dream started—and it’s certainly not where it will end. Everyone seems to agree that her talent is worthy of the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), the premier racing body for North American sports car competition. She’s been there once already: In 2018, she pulled out a top 10 finish as the circuit’s first and only female driver. But staying in IMSA was another story. One might think that Zellers’ talent and experience would equal the kind of motorsports magic IMSA team owners clamor for. It’s true that drivers must have those

traits in spades, but they also need to bring either personal wealth or major sponsorship money to the table—and Zellers does not. After all, racing is a business. “It’s basically 90-percent hustle, 10-percent driving,” she says. Zellers moved to Florida in 2019 for the year-round racing opportunities that warm weather allows, and she’s now based in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. Her hustle and talent quickly got the attention of David Tuaty, team owner of TLM USA Racing. When Tuaty broke his collarbone in a skiing accident, he hired Zellers to pair up with Guzman. Although Guzman, 44, is a top surgeon at South Florida Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Palm Beach County, on the weekends he pursues his lifelong passion for racing. This year he went all in as a car owner, purchasing the Porsche 997 GT3-R cup car that he and Zellers now co-drive. “She’s the most adaptable driver I’ve ever seen,” Guzman says. “She’s smooth. She’s fast. And she’s consistent.” Guzman adds that there’s no doubt about Zellers’ future as a professional race car driver. “The talent is there. The opportunity is there; teams are willing to take her onboard. She’s known by everybody. We’re just working on the budget.” Using his local connections, Guzman has helped Zellers secure sponsorships with Provident Jewelry and Corum Watches. The money Zellers earns showcasing their products on social media to her more than 68,000 Instagram followers and nearly 44,000 Facebook friends (both counts current as of press time) buys her time to seek more racing opportunities and try to land the kind of major sponsor that will get the attention of an IMSA team. “I just have to keep reminding myself that there are a lot of different pieces I need to put together to make it to the top,” she says. The piece she’s focusing on now? “Being patient and working my butt off.” Watching Zellers leave the garage after her team’s tough break in the Miami 500, you can glimpse that same 7-year-old who first fell in love with the sport. She’s down, but far from out. When asked if the Indy 500 is still the goal, she shakes her head no, clears her throat, and takes a pause. In that instant, you can almost hear her telling herself: Stay in the moment, don’t get too far ahead of yourself. “Indy would be cool someday,” she admits. “But right now, I’ve got to be focused on getting back to IMSA.” She corrects herself: “To the top of IMSA.” Either way, she’s not out to be the next Danica Patrick. “Definitely not,” she says. “I just want to be the next Hanna Zellers.” « 54

MICHELLE FLANIGAN AND KIM ZAFFERE HOST A FESTIVE LADIES’ NIGHT OUT ABOARD A LUXURY YACHT TO CELEBRATE FEMALE ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND FRIENDSHIP By Linda Marx | Photography by Jerry Rabinowitz

T

he late author and essayist Anaïs Nin once wrote: “Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by meeting that a new world is born.” For Fort Lauderdale–based entrepreneurs Michelle Flanigan and Kim Zaffere, a world in which the currency is support and empowerment opened up when they became friends 15 years ago. They’ve since worked together on both hospitality and philanthropy projects, always making it a priority to share their strong belief in the power of female friendship and innovation. To salute their ever-growing circle of friends, Flanigan and Zaffere recently hosted a women’s dinner party in Fort Lauderdale aboard the 110-foot Bella Vita luxury vessel owned by their pal Frank Gatto, founder of Design Engineering Group. “We wanted to throw a party because we like to applaud women supporting women,” says Zaffere, whose

former husband, Frank Zaffere, works with Flanigan’s husband, Paul, on various culinary ventures under their company, Old School Hospitality, including Good Spirits Fifth & Fed and the Quarterdeck restaurants. “All of the women we invited are entrepreneurial and smart.” Flanigan adds that the group tries to meet once a month to catch up and exchange ideas, but this event was their fanciest to date. They felt that the Bella Vita setting would be the perfect way to pay homage to the area’s reputation as the yachting capital of the world. “We love having a party on the water because nothing illustrates Fort Lauderdale better,” says Flanigan. The pair of energetic mothers—Zaffere has two daughters and a step-daughter, and Flanigan has a modern family of five boys and girls, affectionally known as “The Brady Bunch”—are managing partners of Good Spirits Fifth & Fed in Fort Lauderdale. Since taking over operations, they’ve made an effort to establish a haven for female patrons, developing a cozy yet elegant vibe they believe appeals to this demographic. They now estimate that about 60 percent of the restaurant’s customers are women. “We offer a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and both Michelle and I know the names of people when they walk through the door,” says Zaffere. “We have gotten a lot of support from the community.” Zaffere—who grew up in Fort Lauderdale and was a 1988 debutante, a Miss Florida USA contestant, and the 1982 Junior Orange Bowl Princess—loves her community as if it were a family member. She has an extensive background in legal marketing (she studied

Together, Michelle and I know everyone in Fort Lauderdale.” Both Zaffere and Flanigan are dedicated to fundraising for local charities and schools. Zaffere has also raised money for political campaigns and the pro bono aspects of the Broward Human Rights Initiative. In 2013, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County named her one of the “100 Outstanding Women of Broward County.” Some of her current charity work benefits St. Thomas Aquinas High School and Handy Inc., which provides educational and life-skills resources to local children. Flanigan, who was raised in Chicago, is also heavily involved in philanthropy with St. Anthony Catholic School, Pink Angels of Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, and Legal Aid Service of Broward County, an organization Zaffere supports too. Flanigan, who formerly worked as a nurse, is the owner of Comfort Nurse Care in Fort Lauderdale. When it comes to her partnership with Zaffere, Flanigan excels in strategic, scalable approaches to restaurant management. In addition to her knowledge of financial administration and regulatory compliance, she’s a motivational diplomat who can train staff to handle customer needs. “I am a details person who also learned a lot from my hus70 FORT LAUDERDALE ILLUSTRATED

band’s restaurant business,” she says. Beyond his own culinary ventures, Paul Flanigan is the nephew of the late Joseph “Big Daddy” Flanigan, whose large restaurant chain, Flanigan’s, began in South Florida in 1959. “Kim and I are upfront about everything, and we address issues when they arise. There is no competition between us. We get along beautifully.” Hospitality, it seems, is an art Zaffere and Flanigan studied while growing up. They were raised in homes where their family members took joy in entertaining, so they often compare notes when organizing restaurant events or private parties. Zaffere praises her grandmother’s prowess as a hostess, and also credits her father with teaching her valuable social skills. “My dad was charismatic and encouraged me to treat people specially,” says Zaffere. “Still, since I am a perfectionist, I always feel scared and stressed before a party begins. But I think that tension gets me started.” Flanigan remembers her family holiday parties and the great pains her mother took to add the right elements, ensuring her gatherings would result in long-lasting memories. “I retained what I learned as a young girl and bring it to the table,” says Flanigan. “With our different backgrounds, Kim and I greatly balance each other as hosts.” Zaffere and Flanigan were able to channel their experiences— both professional and personal—into their Asian-Indian-fusion dinner party celebrating wanderlust. The evening, which began with a sunset viewing from the bow of the boat, was a glorious

marriage of worldly influences tinged with the hosts’ disarming joie de vivre. “These two women are amazing hosts, role models, mothers, and entrepreneurs,” says guest Malena Mendez-Dorn, director of corporate partnerships for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. “They are beautiful both inside and out and know how to create balance. Most importantly, they really know how to have fun.” The culinary portion kicked off with a signature cocktail, a Saketini, made with rice wine and cucumber. Grateful Palate Catering & Events prepared an eclectic variety of passed hors d’oeuvres including deviled dragon eggs and summer rolls with pickled vegetables and spicy mayonnaise. While sampling the bites, guests listened to live music courtesy of saxophonist Jon Saxx and applauded the talents of the hosts. “I met Kim when she was at Legal Aid, and she continues to be the most elegant and charming hostess who knows how to con-

nect people, make us feel good, and fit into any environment,” says Juliette Lippman, partner at the law firm Birnbaum, Lippman, & Gregoire. Laura Lang, a realtor with Compass, praised Flanigan’s ability to work with Zaffere, run a nursing business, and help her husband with his busy restaurants. “Michelle has transitioned into an amazing businesswoman with many projects, and I am so glad to be here to support her and the other girls,” she says. For the decor, Laurie DaSilva of Jolie Events Miami mixed and matched an array of colorful throw pillows, lanterns, turquoise and orange bottles, vases, and white pillar candles with garlands of fuchsia orchids. Channeling the wanderlust theme, DaSilva dressed the dining table in shades of pink, yellow, green, and blue to give the space a dramatic sweep of far-flung excitement. The place settings included rattan starters, gold-rimmed china from Germany, indigo glass goblets, and matching napkins from DaSilva’s personal collection. “Kim and Michelle didn’t want nautical decor; they wanted fascina72

tion and drama to reflect their guests,” says DaSilva. “I had fun bringing in bright colors and a centerpiece of fresh roses, tulips, and orchids with pincushions and yellow Billy Balls with lots of surrounding candles. I also used a fuchsia tablecloth and turquoise runner because I like different textures and materials.” James Cawley, culinary director of Grateful Palate, also kept with the theme, describing his menu as “clean, crisp, and refreshing, yet exotic with flavors of Asia.” The meal started with tuna tartare served in a coconut shell with wonton chips and cucumbers. Guests then dined on five-

spice pork belly and grilled melon in a honey-spiced glaze, followed by Chilean sea bass with baby bok choy, ginger jasmine rice, and a sweetand-sour sauce. For dessert, they indulged in a showstopping Baked Alaska with diced mango, red dragon fruit, and baked meringue chips. “Kim and Michelle have a flair for the dramatic, and this party is a shining example of their talents,” says Peggy Marker, president of Marker Construction, the company that built Good Spirits. Later, as guests raved about the food and prepared to return home to their families, they talked more about the importance of women sup

porting each other and sharing in their successes. They agreed that it is rare to have a group of eight female friends who truly admire each other and don’t look for one another’s flaws. “Peg and I were late tonight because we both needed to work overtime,” says Stephanie Toothaker, a lawyer who formerly served as special counsel to U.S. Senator Bob Graham and is now self-employed. “Everyone was cool because we all juggle careers and life. The party was filled with dramatic beauty, but there is no drama among any of us. We all have kids and busy lives, and we support each other fully.” « FORTLAUDERDALEILLUSTRATED.COM | APRIL 2020

SUPERSTARS CLEAR SKIES AND WARM TEMPS HERALD THE ARRIVAL OF CONVERTIBLE SEASON, AND THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF COOL DROP-TOPS TO CHOOSE FROM BY HOWARD WALKER

For last summer’s Monterey Car Week in California, Rolls-Royce Bespoke created a new Dawn drophead in this peachy-pastel hue called Coral Solid.

ROLLS-ROYCE DAWN

The color of luxury

Pick a color, any color. The shade of your favorite Skittle? No problem. The hue of the Caribbean off St. Barths? Done. The tint of your mother’s adorable pink poodle? Questionable, but all you have to do is ask. That’s the beauty of buying a Rolls-Royce. Its England-based Bespoke division will happily fulfill your every fantasy, no matter how quirky. Having this level of anything-youwant customization only adds to the heart-soaring appeal of Rolls’ glorious Dawn. Trust me, there’s simply no finer way of transporting four people in drop-top luxury than this.

Gently toggle a dashboard switch, and its six-layer-thick cloth roof performs a whisper-quiet ballet of unlatching and motoring majestically rearward. To drive it is to love it. With a turbine-smooth 6.6-liter twin-turbo V-12 under that mile-long hood, you’re propelled forward with the surge of a Gulfstream jet on takeoff. Hand over $341,000 and you too will be sprinting from zero to 60 mph in five seconds flat in the custom-painted Dawn of your dreams. Me? I’ll take mine in green, the color of envy.

MERCEDES-AMG S 65 CABRIOLET

Silence is golden

074_CONVERTIBLES_0120-3.indd 75

2

No one needs a V-12-engined S 65 cabriolet. Nor does anyone need to spend a quarter-ofa-million dollars acquiring one. Not when the V-8-powered S 63 version is quicker, more exciting to drive, and stickers for under $200,000. But all that doesn’t matter. The S 65 is the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the best of the best for those who will accept nothing less. The badge of honor here is the mighty, hand-built 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-12 shoehorned beneath that endless hood. Packing 621 horsepower and a nuclear reactor–like 738 pound-feet of torque, it has the energy to power a small town. Yet, unlike the S 63, it doesn’t shout about its performance, backed by formidable thrust that’s silent and seemingly never-ending. It makes a Bentley seem showy and juvenile. This is a wonderful convertible, with a top that descends in under 20 seconds and seating for four, so friends and family can soak up the sun. Not to mention, it’s most likely the last of a dying breed. Chances are, with the quest for electric power, there’ll never be another V-12 Mercedes. Buy this one and keep it forever. 3 CHEVROLET CORVETTE CONVERTIBLE

Mid-engined magic

Be still my beating heart. Not only has Chevy unveiled its much-anticipated mid-engined C8 Corvette Stingray, but it quickly followed that up with a power-retractable hardtop convertible version. Production kicked off earlier this year, eliciting lines longer than those for Hamilton tickets. After all, here’s a 490-hp mid-engined supercar that costs just $7,500 more than the base coupe. That

means a McLaren 570S–challenging convertible for $67,495. Not only is this exotic supercar retailing for the price of a family sedan, but it also boasts a brilliant design. That folding top—crafted from lightweight composites—can raise or lower in 16 seconds and at speeds up to 30 mph. Top up or down, this bullet from Bowling Green looks like a million bucks.

Order one in red, and you’ll have friends and family thinking you’ve just bought yourself a Ferrari. Like the C8 coupe, power comes from a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 mated to an 8-speed dualclutch automatic. Count from one to three and that’s how long it’ll take to blast from zero to 60 mph, with a top speed of 190 mph. No doubt about it, this will be the hottest convertible of 2020.

ASTON MARTIN DBS SUPERLEGGERA VOLANTE

4

A ride fit for 007

With Bond fever reaching the point of frenzy—the latest 007 romp, No Time to Die, opens April 10—I have my fingers crossed that JB’s ride of choice will be the magnificent 2020 DBS Superleggera Volante. Quite a mouthful, I know. But the translation is simple; superleggera is Italian for “superlight,” as in weight, while volante is Aston speak for convertible. The car is nothing less than a monster. Based on the regular DB11 drophead, it’s powered by a thundering 715-hp twin-turbo 5.2-liter V-12 that can catapult this achingly gorgeous rocket ship from rest to 60 mph in a

mere 3.3 seconds and on to an outrageous 211 mph. Just as speedy is the levitating of the Superleggera’s cloth top, which clocks in at 14 seconds from start to finish. Aston says the eight-layer roof was subjected to the extremes of Death Valley and the Arctic Circle as part of its testing. That and more than 100,000 cycles in a one-month time span, which is said to equal 10 years of use. As for the price tag, you’ll need to find a nontrivial $332,000 for the privilege of being shaken and stirred in this mightiest of Aston convertibles.

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GTC

The power of eight

All the superlatives in Webster’s don’t capture the overpowering glee of piloting the redesigned, reimagined Bentley Continental GTC convertible. Based closely on the all-new Continental coupe, this drop-top combines elegance, blistering performance, driving sophistication, and hand-crafted luxury in one delicious grand touring package. Style-wise, it’s just ravishing. I love the bolder grille, the more chiseled lines, and the broader, more muscular shoulders covering those optional 22-inch rims. As before there’s a tight-fitting cloth top that can raise or lower in 19 seconds and at speeds up to 30

mph. Choose from seven fabric colors and, for the first time, a tweed cloth. The big news, however, is what’s under the hood. For 2020 the convertible has received a new V-8. It’s the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo 8 that powers the latest Porsche Panamera Turbo and Lamborghini Urus sport-ute. In Bentley guise, it punches out an impressive 542 hp. Yes, the famous W-12 12-cylinder continues, but the V-8-powered GTC is just a better car to drive. Between its open-top elegance and breathtaking agility, this GTC V-8 is about as close to convertible perfection as you can get.

AUDI R8 SPYDER PERFORMANCE There’s one supreme reason to buy an open-top R8 Spyder: the sound. Power back the roof, dial up 6,000 rpm on the tach, and listen in spine-tingling, jaw-descending joy as the Audi’s screaming, snarling V-10 soars toward the red line. It’s surely one of the most melodious, emotional eruptions on the planet— and it’s best heard with the top dropped and the side windows lowered.

5 V-10 heaven

The engine is the creation of Audi’s sister brand, Lamborghini, and a variation of it powers the latest Huracan. In the new 2020 R8 Spyder Performance version, this normally aspirated 5.2-liter V-10 makes a mighty 602 hp. With quattro all-wheel drive and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic channeling all that power, the R8 can rocket from standstill to 60 in just 3.1 seconds; it won’t quit till the speedo is showing

204. Yet the real beauty of this slingshot Audi is that you can use its torrent of horsepower day in and day out, given its relaxed and refined delivery. Having been around since 2006, the R8 is having a tough time these days competing against the newkid-on-the-block McLaren 570S. But that mighty V-10 is worth every cent of the Spyder Performance’s lofty $210,000-plus asking price.

PORSCHE 911 CARRERA S CABRIOLET Ever since Porsche took the top off its rear-engined 911 back in 1982, the car has been slowly—but constantly—evolving. For me, the new 2020 Carrera S cabriolet is the best 911 convertible yet. Even though 911s keep getting bigger and heavier, they somehow become even more enjoyable to drive. Let the revs soar on that iconic

8 78

Simply the best

3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six. Play tunes with the 8-speed PDK automatic. Feel the precision of the electric-assist steering. It’s all magical. As for the new top design, it’s nothing less than a work of art. Four hidden aluminum bows and three magnesium panels are concealed, ensuring a curved, coupe-like roofline, improved aerodynamics, and reduced weight. At the tap

of a button, the top opens in a zippy 12 seconds and at speeds up to 31 mph. Even at triple-digit velocities, there’s hardly a whisper of wind noise. These days, 911s are far from cheap. This latest Carrera S cab starts at more than $126,000 and soars with each pricey option. But here is a car that will turn every drive into an event. Guaranteed.

BMW 840i CONVERTIBLE

Now with six appeal

One of my 2019 driving highlights was piloting BMW’s exquisite new V-8-engined 850i convertible. What’s not to appreciate about a super-luxury, four-seat drop-top with 532 hp and a roof that descends in just 15 seconds? While having power is good, saving more than $20,000 is equally attractive. Which is why BMW’s new-for-2020 840i convertible, with a straight-six under the hood, should have lovers of full-size, open-air machinery salivating. The appeal here is the engine. I’m a huge fan of BMW’s

TwinPower 3.0-liter turbo six for its turbine-smooth power and strong, mid-range thrust. Even with a four-seater as hefty as the 8 series, this lusty 335-hp straightsix can rocket the convertible from standstill to 60 mph in 5 seconds—4.6 if you opt for the all-wheel-drive xDrive version. Top down, four windows raised, and the standard mesh rear-wind blocker in place, and there’s hardly a rustle in the cockpit. Pricing for the 840i convertible kicks off at $98,400, with the xDrive version adding an extra $2,000. That’s a lot of six appeal for the money.

FERRARI PORTOFINO

The ultimate starter Ferrari

Bella macchina. Say it with true Italian passione, complete with a shrug of the shoulders and palms upturned. A “beautiful machine” indeed. This is Ferrari’s entry-level model, but with a sticker price of around $215,000, there’s nothing “entry-level” about this open-top prancing horse. Replacing the less-than-stylish California T, the 2+2 Portofino has sleeker lines, a more striking snout, and a less-pronounced rump. Top up or down, it looks stunning and every bit a true Ferrari. Talking of the top, the hard roof folds at the touch of a button, though the complex process involves the rear section of the car canting backward rather awkwardly.

LEXUS LC CONVERTIBLE Lovers of super-refined, high-luxe convertibles have been mourning the loss of the leatherlined Lexus SC 430 hardtop convertible since it ceased production back in 2010. But mourn no more. Lexus recently announced (to no one’s surprise) that it’s producing a convertible version of the super-sexy LC 500 coupe, with a few key design edits that further highlight its sumptuous

074_CONVERTIBLES_0120-3.indd 79

9 But for added shock-and-awe value, complete the top-dropping drama with a blip of the Portofino’s throttle. Under the hood is a twin-turbo 3.9-liter V-8 packing an impressive 591 hp and featuring a soundtrack so vocal it will make grown men weep. Magnifico!

Yes, of course it’s fast—blisteringly so. As in zero-to-60-in-3.5-seconds fast. As in 199-mphtop-speed fast. This straight-line performance is matched by precise yet surprisingly undemanding handling. Entry-level it may be, but this is arguably the perfect all-around Ferrari.

Finally, a new Lexus drop-top

silhouette. Expect this drop-top to hit showrooms this summer, with a price tag starting at just over $100,000. Like the coupe, engine choices will include the throaty 5.0-liter V-8 cranking out 471 hp, along with the 3.5-liter V-6 electric hybrid that’s good for a combined 354 hp. As for the LC’s top, Lexus is breaking the tradition set by the SC and replac-

ing the metal folding hardtop with a cloth roof to reduce weight and keep performance lively. Pity. Everyone I know with an SC adores the hardtop for its added security, excellent rearward visibility, and cleaner lines. But either way, there’s much to love about the LC 500 coupe, and offering a convertible version only adds to the attraction. This new ride is destined to be one highly desirable drop-top. « FORTLAUDERDALEILLUSTRATED.COM PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | FEBRUARY | APRIL 2020 2019

FINANCIAL PLANNING & WEALTH MANAGEMENT The Bodkins Group at Morgan Stanley

Money. It’s arguably the most taboo subject one can broach. While other conversations may seem more personal, it’s money we keep closest to the vest. Whether in times of economic boom or financial uncertainty, many of us don’t know how to best manage our resources, or more importantly, who to entrust them with. The Bodkins Group certainly has the experience with over 100 years combined in the money management industry. With a list of loyal clientele who are more like family than account numbers, you will be assured of the best, transparent investment strategy for your individual needs. The team, comprised of Senior Vice President and Financial Advisor Mark Bodkins (42 years of experience); First Vice President and Financial Advisor John Duford (33 years); Senior Registered Associates Carolyn Williams (36 years) and Lauren Jordan (14 years); and Senior Client Associate Maria Strand (30 years) feels more like a family than business associates. They treat their clients like extended family, knowing each personally, sometimes spanning multiple generations over the years. Having a good financial advisor is an important thing. Having one who knows and cares about you? Even better.

PHILANTHROPY Community Foundation of Broward

Bold leaders step up for the community they love. They create a legacy of impact that lasts forever. The Community Foundation of Broward helps local philanthropists make a bold impact that shapes a brighter future. Because of the power of endowment, those who give through the Community Foundation build permanent philanthropic resources for Broward that are able to help where needed, today and forever. Donald B. Medalie, Esq.; Christine L. Lambertus, Esq.; and Charles L. Verner are among an elite group of professional advisors who trust the Community Foundation to help their clients make a lasting difference. They refer clients to the Community Foundation and work with their clients to craft estate plans that include gifts to the Foundation. Donald, Christine, and Charles believe in the power of local philanthropy so much that they have included the Community Foundation in their own estate plans. They trust the Community Foundation to further their personal legacies of bold impact. They are members of the Community Foundation’s Legacy Society—forward-thinkers who use estate gifts to transform the community they love. Their gifts will create endowed charitable Funds in their names at the Community Foundation that tackle Broward’s greatest challenges. Support from charitable Funds helps more students graduate from high school, empowers struggling families to rise from poverty, spreads the arts to more neighborhoods, fosters breakthroughs in cancer research and much, much more. Broward’s future is made brighter by local leaders who, with their philanthropy through the Community Foundation, create a legacy of bold impact that lasts forever.

COMPLEX COMMERCIAL LITIGATION Conrad & Scherer

For more than 45 years, Conrad & Scherer has earned a reputation as one of South Florida’s most accomplished law firms in the practice of complex commercial litigation. Few law firms can match the breadth of expertise that the team brings to their cases; their attorneys have over 200 years of combined experience, which has translated directly into a long and distinguished record of success. Conrad & Scherer served as attorneys for victims of Scott Rothstein’s multi-billion-dollar Ponzi scheme, producing one of the highest-ever percentages of recovery for plaintiffs. Another recent victory generated what may be the largest damage verdict in Broward County’s history. Now they’re representing 27 Florida hospitals in the fight against opioid manufacturers and distributors.

FACES of Fort Lauderdale.indd 86

Landmark decisions and groundbreaking actions like these are the result of the firm’s unique combination of legal proficiency, meticulous preparation, and, perhaps most importantly, courtroom prowess. The team at Conrad & Scherer is more than comfortable arguing before judge and jury to achieve the best possible results for clients. It’s that willingness to go to trial that may be Conrad & Scherer’s most defining characteristic.

FORT LAUDERDALE Mayor Dean Trantalis, Trantalis & Associates

While Fort Lauderdale residents are busy managing their day-to-day lives, driving to work on its roads, deciding which beach to visit or where to ride their bikes, it’s easy to forget that there’s someone behind the scenes keeping it all together. That someone is Dean Trantalis, Mayor of Fort Lauderdale. When Trantalis threw his hat in the ring for the 2018 mayoral race, he did so to help not only improve the city, but to improve the inner workings of the commission itself. What Trantalis saw was a city where the residents felt their vision was being ignored, and the city taken in a wrong direction. His goal was, and is, to improve the quality of life that was being threatened, and to steer the city back in the proper direction. Between infrastructure, development on the beach and the homeless problem, he keeps himself busy. And, you’ll also find him behind the scenes, pushing legislation to better our environment; his most recent success being the elimination of plastic straws in Fort Lauderdale. When asked what he wanted his legacy to be, Trantalis simply says, “If I can come to work and be Mayor, and if there is a pattern of good as a result, that will be enough.”

The FACES of

GENERATIONAL INVESTING

The Foreman-Cook Group at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management “Shirtsleeves-to-shirtsleeves in three generations!” Sound cliché? Far from it. Although an early 20th-century proverbial saying, there is a pattern where the first generation builds wealth, the second generation maintains it, and the third generation squanders it. This applies to families that have $100,000 to $100,000,000. Managing a family’s wealth from generation to generation doesn’t have to be full of perils. For a family to successfully preserve its wealth, it must continue to educate its members financially and agree to uphold its shared values. Most importantly, each successive generation must reaffirm and readopt those shared values. With a diverse team of advisors, The Foreman-Cook Group provides strategic investing and planning for every stage with families, individuals, and businesses, generation after

FACES of Fort Lauderdale.indd 89

generation. The team is headed by SVP Wealth Management Advisor John Foreman CFP® and SVP Senior Financial Advisor Austin Cook CRPC®; along with Financial Advisors Benjamin Ross CPFA, David Foreman, Alina Ali, Maribeth Bates; Registered Senior Client Associate Diana Heitzman, and Client Associate Erin Donner. The lesson here is all generations need to be connected to the family and family values. If a family is only connected by money and legal structures, it is difficult to keep the shirtsleeves proverb from becoming a reality.

OFF THE VINE

French Candor

Sonoma’s Vérité Winery ups the ante on Bordeaux-style vintages to CREATE A CATEGORY ALL ITS OWN

A

By Mark Spivak

s recently as a generation ago, a sharp difference between wine from the Old and New Worlds persisted: Bordeaux was predictably earthy and funky, while you could count on California reds to be fruit bombs. Each style had its partisans, and crossover was nearly nonexistent. Pierre and Monique Seillan stepped into this culture when they arrived in Sonoma County in 1997. Pierre Seillan, a sixth-generation winemaker practicing his craft in Bordeaux, crossed the ocean at the request of the late Jess Jackson. The two men met several years earlier in France and became friends. Jackson knew that California needed to improve the quality of its Merlot and wanted to make a wine as good as the legendary Château Petrus; he had the deep pockets to make it happen, and Seillan boasted the talent.

On that first visit, Jackson loaded Seillan into a vehicle and gave him a tour of his mountain vineyards. For the Frenchman, who had a connection with the soil from early childhood, it was love at first sight. “When I looked at the diversity of the vineyards, I knew I could create a wine with more complexity than Bordeaux,” he recalls. “But I didn’t want to make a copy of Bordeaux. I wanted to create a new category.” Vérité (French for “truth”) sprang from these aspirations, and the winery debuted its first vintage in 1998. Today its three cuvées—La Muse, La Joie, and Le Désir—are nothing less than stunning. Nor are they cheap: The winery doesn’t sell directly to retail stores, and after-market prices range from $350-$400 per bottle. (“What makes Vérité great isn’t the price but the time that goes into it,” says Seillan. “Time is the greatest luxury today.”) In 2003, the experiment in cross-pollination came full

circle when Jackson and Seillan purchased Château Lassègue, a Grand Cru estate in St. Emilion. Tasting the three Vérité wines together is an exercise in hedonism. The 2016 La Muse (93 percent Merlot, 5 percent Cabernet Franc, and 2 percent Malbec) exudes aromas of black cherries and fresh herbs; it sits rich and luxurious in the mouth, with an opulent texture full of black fruit flavors that echo on a long finish. The 2016 La Joie (84 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 11 percent Merlot, and 5 percent Petit Verdot) emanates elegant complexity, with spice and pinpoint acidity highlighting hints of blackberry and black plum. The 2016 Le Désir (82 percent Cabernet Franc, 12 percent Merlot, and 6 percent Malbec) tastes aggressive and spicy on entry but is followed by an unctuous midpalate and poised mouth feel. They share many similarities, including high acidity that creates an appealing freshness. Since Vérité picks the grapes before they become overripe, the alcohol content tops out at around 14 percent, compared to 15 to 16 percent for many Napa reds. As a result, the wines are drinkable now and can also last two or three decades. By comparison, the 2016 Lassègue ($60) displays a strong vein of minerality from the limestone soil but at-

Pierre Seillan has passed on his wealth of knowledge to his daughter, Hélène, who serves as assistant winemaker at Vérité.

tains a surprisingly luscious core of ripe black cherry fruit. No one lives forever, and the Seillans have their succession plan in place. Their daughter, Hélène, works alongside her father as assistant winemaker at Vérité, while their son, Nicolas, primarily focuses on Château Lassègue. With a farmer’s DNA in their genes, these two are ready to take both projects into the next generation. (veritewines.com) «
