Dr. Daniel Baskaran Dr. Daniel Baskaran is currently the Technical Advisor to the Pulau Banding Foundation. He was the Chief Executive Officer of the Pulau Banding Research Centre and Foundation until his retirement in June, 2015. Prior to this appointment, he was serving as the Senior Advisor of the Biotechnology Division at the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia following his retirement as the Senior Director of the same Division. His main research areas include forest plantations, production of high quality planting materials for forest plantations, cryopreservation of germplasm of forest tree species, forest conservation and Forest Biotechnology. He has been active in several research projects and professional bodies and has authored or co-authored several technical papers in his field of expertise. He served as the Chairman and Co-Chairman of the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations, Vienna (IUFRO) working groups on Dipterocarps and Seed Physiology respectively until 2010 and also served as the Executive Secretary of Asia Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institutes (APAFRI) until 2008. Presently he continues to serve as a member of the FAO Expert Panel on Plant Genetic Resources at Rome.

Syahruddin bin Abdul Hamid Syahruddin holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Trade from the University of Pittsburg in USA and a Master’s degree from the University of Malaya. Prior to taking over as the Perak State Tourism Director representing the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, he served as an Assistant State Director with the Perak Economic Planning Unit for three and a half years and then went on to be the General Manager of The Royal Belum State Park for one year. As of 15th April, 2015 he was transferred to the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. His acquired experience over the years, has given him in-depth knowledge of the potential of ecotourism and its promotion for the State of Perak.
Zuraida binti Md Taib Zuraida binti Md Taib obtained her Bachelors in Mass Communication (majoring in Public Relations) from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam. She joined the Perak State Tourism Action Council in 2005 as a Tourism Officer and served until October, 2011, when this agency was moved to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Perak. She then joined the newly formed Tourism Perak Management Berhad in the same year. Based on her extensive experience, she was appointed as the Senior Administrative Officer in this agency. Currently her role is to manage and to promote tourism in Perak, particularly the Visit Perak Year 2017.

This picturesque book is a product following an International Photographic Competition held on 24th March, 2014 in the Royal Belum Rainforest and its surrounding areas. The aim of this book is to give a picture journey of the splendid landscape features, flora, fauna and the Orang Asli’s way of life. The book also attempts to capture the facilities within and around the forest complex that will aid for ecotourism in Perak. In general this book avoids voluminous write-up and only focuses on the nice sceneries taken during the photographic expedition and some follow up photo sessions. The book is divided into three main parts. The first relates to Forest and Environment where the beauty of nature along with its flora and fauna that creates the fascinating forest environment has been captured. The second part touches on Man and Environment where the low impact development by the Orang Asli and their way of life is portrayed. Part three of the book looks at Ecotourism potential of Royal Belum State Park. In this section, low impact development within and surrounding the forest complex developed by various stakeholders to attract tourists have been captured and displayed. Also, the various tourist agencies that run services to Royal Belum and the various places where one can find accommodation has been listed in this book. A map with details as to how one can reach Royal Belum has also been highlighted. Last but not least, this book could not have been produced without the financial support provided by Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) and the Perak State Government. We also wish to thank our Hon. Minister of Tourism and Culture who was instrumental in promoting Royal Belum as a new ecotourism destination of Malaysia to the world during the ITB (Internationale Tourismus-Börse) Berlin, in 2014 which is the world’s largest European Tourism Trade Fair that is held annually.

MINISTER OF TOURISM AND CULTURE MALAYSIA I am naturally delighted to be able to share my thoughts and feelings about this book “Splendours – The Landscape Beauty of Royal Belum Forest Complex”. I am delighted not just because of the charm and grace of its presentation but more importantly because of its accurate portrayal of the diverse Flora and Fauna, natural landscape and the man-made inclusion in and out of this forest that has come to mean so much to me personally. The Royal Belum Forest Reserve is a jewel in the crown of the Perak State and the opportunities it offers for learning and also for ecotourism activities are endless. We have an obligation to protect and nurture this heritage for ourselves and also our children for the most practical and economic reasons. It is nature that has provided us the resources for our prosperity and it will be nature that will continue to provide such resources to our future generations if they are treated wisely. At the 2014 ITB, Berlin Convention, I introduced The Royal Belum Forest Reserve as a new ecotourism destination in Malaysia. This coffee table book is therefore timely as we can showcase the beauty of Royal Belum State Park in its true glory through the scenic pictures illustrated in this book. This book, I have been informed, is the outcome of an International Photography competition organised by Tourism Malaysia, Perak State Tourism Board and the Pulau Banding Foundation on 24th of March, 2014. The foreign photographers from Indonesia, Singapore, Australia and our own professional photographers spent about three days within this forest and the surrounding areas outside the forest complex and they were given a free reign to photograph all the features they felt were interesting and unique. The outcome of this activity I must say was fascinating and we had a range of photographs to choose from when putting this coffee table book together. This book provides a delightful and non-technical view of this fascinating and undisturbed forest which holds many places of interest that can attract not only our local tourist but also international visitors as well. I am proud to be associated with this book which I believe will be a real pleasure to all those who view it. Last but not the least, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all our colleagues who have worked hard to have this book ready for the ITB, Berlin 2016 that will take place in March, 2016. THE CHIEF MINISTER OF PERAK I am honoured to pen a few words to this book, “Splendours – The Landscape Beauty of Royal Belum Forest Complex”. I wish to congratulate Tourism Malaysia, Perak State Tourism Board and also the Pulau Banding Foundation for coming out with this timely publication. I have been told that this book seeks to highlight the natural beauty in and around the Royal Belum State Park and also the man-made facilities surrounding this forest reserve that provides the convenience of rest and recreation for tourist visiting this forest to enjoy nature’s beauty at its prime. This book will also showcase some of the native villages with their inhabitants going about their daily activities. To me, I think this is an excellent endeavour on an issue that is close to my heart. With the current perils of climate change, we have the responsibility to ensure that our remaining forest is protected and used sustainably to avoid further environmental disasters. Ecotourism is one way where we can generate revenue for the State and at the same time ensure our natural heritage is conserved to perpetuity. What is more, is the fact that this forest in Perak is one of the oldest in the world and most parts of it are still intact and in a pristine state. Our Tourism Minister the Hon. YB Dato Seri Mohamed Nazri bin Abdul Aziz at the 2014 ITB, Berlin Convention introduced this forest reserve as a new Eco-destination in Malaysia. As the coming 2016 ITB, Berlin will be held in March, 2016, the publication of this book is timely and can be used as a tool to market Royal Belum to all the participants at the 2016 Convention and also to all other potential clients. Furthermore, as Perak State is promoting Visit Perak Year in 2017, this publication will also provide an inside into the various Eco-tourism activities available in Royal Belum. I have been told that the publication gives details to visitors as to how they can get to Royal Belum, where they can stay and the various travel agents from Perak who carry out the travel activities to Royal Belum. I wish to again congratulate all parties involved in preparing this coffee table book. My sincere thanks also go out to the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) who have generously contributed a lot of efforts towards the printing of this book. As the EXCO in charge for Tourism in Perak, it is indeed my honour to have this opportunity to pen a foreword for this book. Malaysia is a party to the Convention on Biological Diversity and has committed to the protection of our environment and its natural heritage and to ensure they are sustainably managed. This forest reserve which is about 117,500 hectares is still mostly pristine and has evolved over a period of about 130 million years. It is therefore an ideal destination for ecotourism in the country. Our Tourism Minister the Hon. YB Dato Seri Mohamed Nazri bin Abdul Aziz at the 2014 ITB, Berlin Convention in 2014, introduced this forest reserve as a new eco-destination in Malaysia. NORTHERN CORRIDOR IMPLEMENTATION AUTHORITY (NCIA) Having to confront busy schedules on a daily basis to ensure the sustainable socio-economic development of the Northern Corridor Economic Region (Koridor Utara) in Malaysia, it is rare that I find time to indulge in projects that involve nature and its splendours. Hence, I was pleasantly surprised when I was approached to pen the foreword in this coffee table book. Nature, especially the lush green rainforests of Malaysia, is a subject that is very close to my heart. Thus, I was very excited about this coffee table book when I was told will be illustrated with copious photographs of our Royal Belum and the Temengor forest reserve which is about 130 million years old. Malaysia has acknowledged the need to balance development and conserve environment, and all the states have a mandate to ensure sustainable development of their respective forest resources. Being a party to the Convention on Biological Diversity, it is important to recognise the abundance of the natural resources in Perak. Our forests are still largely in a pristine state and home to a vast number of flora and fauna; hence require our support for the efforts in the preservation of this part of our heritage. Here at the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA), Tourism is one of the key thrust areas that we are leveraging on to generate socio-economic spill-overs; and one of our key programmes is the promotion of ecotourism for the northern region. We have identified the Belum-Temengor Tropical Rainforest as a prime ecotourism destination waiting to be further discovered. Over the last few years, NCIA has helped to upgrade a number of base camps within the forest reserve and a number of pontoons at specific landing sites for the convenience of tourists visiting this forest. We are also currently in the process of building the Pangkalan Aman Public Jetty in Pulau Banding for safe and easy mobility of visitors into the forest. This book is the result of a joint initiative by Tourism Malaysia and the Perak Tourism Board together with NCIA. The venture is indeed timely, as it depicts many of the natural beauties of this forest reserve; and will also ultimately be an important marketing tool for ecotourism and to attract more tourist arrivals into the state as well as Koridor Utara. “Splendours – The Landscape Beauty of Royal Belum Forest Complex” is written in a simple, clear and concise way, and as such will appeal to all. I fervently hope this book will create an interest and awareness of the rich diversity of our forests and the need to protect this inheritance for the future generations. The philosophy of BMC is to strive to ensure that the living and vibrant Royal Belum Rainforest along with the Temengor Rainforest Reserve are at all cost to be kept, managed and promoted as a pristine heritage site and an international ecotourism destination not only for our generation to enjoy but also for our future generations to cherish. To quote the famous saying; “We have just borrowed this valuable asset from our children and their children and it is our responsibility to ensure that we return this asset back to them in the same state we had inherited it”. We are committed to this concept and are working hard towards achieving this. Within the vicinity of the Royal Belum Forest Reserve we have built the Belum Rainforest Resort. In my mind, this facility is only a tool to promote ecotourism. At the resort we provide modest and affordable accommodation and hot meals for eco-tourist to relax after a tiring day in the forest and to stay on to enjoy this natural heritage. The Pulau Banding Foundation has an important role to play in creating awareness on the importance of nature and the environment through research and extension work. I sincerely hope this book will be another tool to get the attention of the public to be aware of the beauty of Nature and it will also help to strengthen educational programmes that will provide awareness and knowledge thus, increasing the concern for conservation among our Malaysian society. My heartiest congratulations are in order to all those who have worked hard to bring this book to a final print. This Park is managed by the Perak State Parks Corporation. It is bordered by Thailand on the north, the state of Kelantan to the east, and Sungai Gadong in the west. The East-West Highway runs along its southern border, bisecting the forest complex and separating the park area from Temengor Forest Reserve to the south. It is contiguous with Thailand’s Bang Lang National Park in Yala Province to the north, and the Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary in Narathiwat Province, to the north-east. PRISTINE LANDSCAPE The landscape of Royal Belum State Park consists of forest, small areas of grassland and abandoned agricultural plots, as well as a large man-made lake, the Temengor Lake. The forest types found in the area are mainly lowland dipterocarp, hill dipterocarp and upper dipterocarp forests extending from 260m to 1,533m above sea level. The majority of the species are characteristic of the tropical rainforest that occur in Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo while a minority patch of the species closer to the Thai border are more typical of the seasonal weather pattern similar to that of the Thai and Burmese region. FLORA AND FAUNA Royal Belum Rainforest is notable for harbouring high concentrations of flora and fauna which includes three species of Rafflesia, ten hornbill species, and many other large mammals like the Asiatic Elephant, the Malayan Tiger and the Malayan Sun Bear.

COMMUNITY The only human inhabitants within the Royal Belum State Park (RBSP) now are the indigenous Orang Asli, mostly of the Jahai group. In addition to the local communities in the park, there are also other communities living close to RBSP, which includes the Orang Asli (majority Temiar) settlement at Pos Chiong along Sungai Sara and other Orang Asli (Temiar/Jahai) villages in Temengor under the collective administration of RPS (Rancangan Penempatan Semula) Banun as well as Malay villages in the area.

ECOTOURISM Belum-Temengor, because of its size, the variety of attractions, relatively easy access and its beautiful lake, is now becoming an eco-destination site for the state of Perak. Banding Island which connects the East and the West Peninsular through the East-West Highway is a 243 hectares island. This island located in the lake, is now being developed with minimum impact to act as the transit point for visitors who wish to enter the Belum-Temengor Forest. The mode of transport into this pristine forest is by boat through the waterways. The Banding Island offers good decent accommodation and food at nominal charges to visitors who visit the forest. In addition, there are several tour operators operating within the Banding Island offering boat services, renting out chalets on smaller islands in the lake or floating accommodation at the edges of the lake.

FOREST AND ENVIRONMENT Forests cover a third of all land on earth, providing vital organic infrastructure for some of the planet’s densest, most diverse collections of life. They support countless species as well as human livelihoods. They are in fact, Planet Earth’s best friend in terms of ensuring that the environment on the planet is habitable. Some natural processes carried out by the forests that forms the heartbeat for our planet and mankind as a whole are: 1. They provide Oxygen for us to breathe 2. MAN AND FOREST Tropical rainforests are home to the Orang Asli who rely on their surroundings for food, shelter, and medicines. Since time immemorial, these communities have had an integral and close-knit relationship with the forests and have been dependent on them for their livelihoods and existence. The relationship was mutually beneficial and not one sided. Even today, these forest dwellers can teach us a lot about the rainforest. Their knowledge of medicinal plants used for treating illness is unmatched, and they have a great understanding of the ecology of the rainforest. Their way of life has been very simple and nature friendly. Today, very few forest dwellers around the world, live in traditional ways; most have been displaced by outside settlers or have been forced to give up their normadic lifestyles by their respective governments. The way of life of the Jahai and Temiar communities in Belum-Temengor are depicted in this book to show their simplicity and nature friendly ways of living.

ECOTOURISM Ecotourism is becoming the hype word in the tourism industry nowadays. It gains its popularity due to two main reasons: economic incentives and conservation benefits, both to the locals and the destination. Ecotourism greatly depends on the wealth of its natural heritage to lure in tourists. Through the National Ecotourism Plan developed in 1996, the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex (BTFC) which was identified as one of the areas possessing great potentials for ecotourism development. The rich biodiversity of flora, fauna and the unique culture of indigenous people living in the area are among the most important elements of attractions apart from the beautiful landscapes and lush sceneries. The Belum-Temengor Rainforest is more than 130 million years old, encompasses 300,000 hectares of paradise that is home to a vast number of unique species of flora and fauna. It remains as one of the largest, untouched forest reserves in the world.
GETTING THERE
By Car Pulau Banding is located within the Belum-Temengor Rainforest, which is situated midway between the east and west coasts of Malaysia. The nearest town to Belum is Gerik in Perak, which is connected via the East-West Highway. From Kuala Lumpur Take the North-South Highway and head north towards Ipoh. Take the Kuala Kangsar exit and head towards Gerik, bypassing the town of Lenggong. This highway will take you straight to Pulau Banding.
