A CALL TO ACTION Calling for Volunteers to Help Run the Ateneo Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Program for Overseas Filipinos (ALSE OF-LIFE) for North America (the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean)

The Ateneo LSE Program is a 6-month (12-full day sessions) empowerment program for overseas Filipinos, particularly OFWs focusing on: Leadership Building, Financial Literacy and Social Innovation/Social Entrepreneurship. This program was started in 2008 in Rome, Italy and since expanded to 16 countries (including the Philippines) with over 4,000 graduates.

PROGRAM OPERATIONS FOR SECRETARIATS AND ROLES OF PROGRAM STAFF Recruitment of Volunteers for Secretariat: 3-7 volunteers are suggested to take on the following tasks: Back-end administrative support (Admin Cluster) Technical matters (Technical Cluster) Session management (Session Management Cluster) All volunteers have to undergo training and orientation on the whole program content and approaches as well as on these tasks and functions to ensure a smooth implementation of the program, particularly the 12 program sessions. These will be provided by other ALSE volunteers.

SECRETARIAT CLUSTERS 1. ADMIN CLUSTER (Back-end administrative support) Back-end administrative support is essential to the running of any ALSE OF-LIFE Program.

Before any program can be started, volunteers to run the secretariats need to be recruited and trained in various processes and operations such as providing the administrative support to the program.

Recruitment of Students Recruitment is done through various means: personal invitations, through embassy/POLO or community announcements, social media etc.

Application forms are to be filled up by prospective students online on a link provided by the secretariat.

These application forms will be placed in google docs by each city/country secretariat in close coordination with ASOG. An institutional email address is set up for submission of forms.

Response sheets putting together all the applications received will be prepared by each secretariat for a complete listing of applicants, an evaluation of the applicants, their demographics.

Documentation Proper documentation should be done for the duration of the program. Such documentation include: 1. Database on students from the application forms 2. Attendance of students for each session as this is the basis for the type of certificate to be awarded to the student upon completion of the program Journals or individual assessment of sessions by the students through Google forms 3. Assessment of the resource persons by the students through Google forms 4. Assessment of session by secretariat members with the end view of identifying what went well in the session and what can be improved. The minutes from this assessment are then shared among other secretariats for learning purposes.

Communication with Students and Orientation on Program An orientation session is given to prospective students at least a week before the start of the program. The session aims to provide basic knowledge to the students on what the program is about, the expectations and requirements from the students, process and procedures, rules and protocols.

Regular communication with students is done through the FB group that is set up by ASoG prior to the start of the program. The FB group is administered by a core secretariat member.

Business Plan Presentations The Secretariats have the responsibility to assist the students in preparing their SI/SE business plans if needed. Mentors need to be identified who can help in general or specific aspects of the plans.

The Secretariats are responsible for inviting the panelists who will review the SI/SE plans, listen to the plans/proposals during the formal business plan presentation session and critique these proposals with the end view of providing the students ways to improve these proposals and increase their chances of success and sustainability.

Guidelines are provided the secretariats in selecting mentors and panelists.

Graduation The Secretariat needs to ensure that the students who will graduate have completed all the requirements for graduation. The Secretariat also needs to ensure that all students fill up the end of the course evaluation and submitted on the 12th or last formal session.

Requirements for graduation are the ff: 1. Attendance 2. SI/SE Business Plan 3. Journal entries after every session 4. Essay on My ALSE OF-LIFE Journey Student Support Supporting the students as they undergo the 6-month program involves the following tasks: 1. Handholding 2. General Mentoring 3. Mentoring during SI/SE Preparations

Learning Management System (LMS) Canvas LMS will be used as the web based LMS for the students and teachers and students to access and manage the online learning course materials.

Zoom and Streamyard online applications Secretariat members in charge of hosting and managing either Zoom or Streamyard will be given training on the use of these online applications.

Secretariat under this cluster will train everyone of the use of the following applications needed for each session.

·This task in each of the sessions will involve the following sub-tasks: Hosting – means moderating the session Break Out Rooms – sessions usually involve breaking into small group discussions Facilitating Plenary and Small Groups – each small group needs at least one facilitator to ensure that there is a smooth flow of discussion, and no one monopolizes the discussion. Facilitators do not participate in the group discussions.

Volunteer Teacher Support (Assisting Resource Persons) – Secretariat member is assigned to provide assistance to the teacher before and during the whole session: preparatory meeting to discuss workflow, reminding of the time, bringing anything of importance to the teacher, noting the questions in the chat etc.
