Research and PBA success stories show the power of internships

B

oosted by an aquatic-themed marketing plan, the University launched a new emphasis promoting student internships as a powerful way to discern one’s career path and become employable.

DIVE stands for Discovering Internships as Vocational Exploration, because internships can do a lot more than look good on a resume, said Dr. Kimberly Ladd, director of Career Development.

“An internship experience needs to do something to you, not just for you,” said Ladd. She and Assistant Director of Career Development Jennifer Fonseca visited classes to promote the program. They explained to students the value of internships, how to find an internship and how to “maximize what you do while you’re there.”

Ladd’s doctorate is in higher education, with emphasis on student success. “Research shows that all internships are not created equal,” she said. “Internship experiences need to include a set of reflective exercises in order to be effective.”

When students sign up for internships for PBA credit, the students and the employers agree on learning objectives before the internships begin. Those objectives go to a PBA professor who later helps the students determine if the objectives were met through the internship. The students write a reflective piece explaining what they learned about the job and what they learned about themselves.

Research and PBA success stories demonstrate the power of such guided internships.

Kyle Anderson, a 2018 grad in marketing and finance, did an internship with Nutramedix, a company that sells nutritional supplements. “You have no idea what you might enjoy until you try it,” Anderson said. He found the company provided “a great work environment” where he learned a lot. And after his internship he accepted a full-time marketing job with the company.

Sixty-seven percent of students who immerse

themselves in vocationally focused internships are offered full-time jobs within the organization where they interned, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

Ben Cookinham, a 2018 marketing grad, said a student “should be a sponge” during an internship. He interned twice with Stanley Black & Decker. “I knew as soon as I went through my first internship that I wanted to work for this company,” he said. He now has a full-time job as a sales coordinator with the company.

English major Skye Sherman graduated in 2016 and came back to campus recently to speak at a brown-bag lunch with current English students. She told them how she became a widely published travel writer after interning with Palm Beach Illustrated magazine.

The internship “introduced me to what that industry looks like on a day-to-day basis in the real world and confirmed to me this is what I want to be involved in,” said Sherman. “You really need that realworld experience in your intended or chosen field.”

PBA has promoted internships for many years, but the DIVE program brought a new, campus-wide coordination, said Ladd, “so our students become energized earlier about the possibilities.”

On Jan. 15 PBA held its first internship expo. More than 50 employers set up exhibits in the Mahoney Gymnasium to meet with students and tell them about available internships.

Student leaders called career peers helped promote the expo with DIVE literature and gimmicks. (See page 1.) Career peers also helped students fine-tune their resumes and prepare for the event.

Ladd said the expo was so successful that her office will bring it back again. “Employers said the students were prepared, well-spoken and ready to launch,” she said. “We have a great type of student to offer, and the word’s out and employers know it.”

Cambodia bound After multiple internships, 2019 grad serving in Peace Museum

nneliese Hardman enjoyed several internships as a PBA student; now as a May 2019 graduate she’s begun a capstone experience: a year-long appointment at the Cambodia Peace Museum.

In Battambang, Cambodia, she has joined the Mennonite Central Committee’s Serving and Learning Together program, which sends young people around the globe to serve in the areas of peace, relief and development. (www.mcc.org/salt) “The Cambodia Peace Museum tells the story of the country’s transition from war to peace following the Khmer Rouge,” said Hardman, who serves as a museum assistant.

“The museum’s mission is to expand how Cambodian history is viewed and contribute to a culture of peace where people have a deeper understanding of conflict.”

Some college students think of an internship as a final step to take just before they graduate. But PBA’s Career Development staff encourages students to do multiple internships, beginning as soon as they can. As a sophomore Hardman had her first internship, working at the Norton Museum of Art (www.norton.org), located adjacent to the University campus.

“The earlier you can start really understanding your own interests, the better,” she said. “I still had half of my college career ahead of me to develop the skills I learned as an intern at the Norton and then to try different avenues of applying them. I realized that I loved interacting with the public and sharing my knowledge of history with others.”

A double major in history and music, Hardman next landed an internship with the Findlay Galleries. With locations in Palm Beach and New York City, Findlay is the nation’s second-oldest art gallery. The following semester she interned with the Historical Society of Palm Beach County.

In her senior year, Hardman learned that Palm Beach resident Nancy Brinker needed a personal archivist because Harvard University’s Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America wanted Brinker to donate personal documents about her life.

Brinker founded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and also has served as chief of protocol under President George W. Bush and as U.S. ambassador to Hungary.

Now equipped with a resume full of internship experiences, Hardman interviewed with Brinker and got the job. “When I tell people about that experience, most of them cannot believe it, and neither can I,” Hardman said with a laugh.

Hardman worked on the Brinker papers from October to May, all the while carrying her heavy class load as a double major. Interviewed about the project later, Brinker described Hardman as very focused and efficient. She concluded, “I would heartily recommend Anneliese to others and wish her well in her next work opportunity.”

For 50 years Palm Beach Atlantic has enjoyed being neighbor to the Norton, with students visiting the exhibits and participating in various programs. After a major expansion and renovation, the museum held a re-opening gala in February, with entertainment including PBA student dancers (above) and musicians.

As Hardman pondered what her next opportunity might be, she worked closely with PBA’s Prestigious National Scholarships Committee and applied for programs with the Peace Corps, the Episcopal Service Corps and the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). She especially wanted to serve in a different country or culture.

Through the David and Leighan Rinker Center for Experiential Learning, she had studied at Oxford University and the University of Edinburgh. “Studying abroad made me appreciate being in a new culture and how much you can learn by living in a new place, interacting with people of different background,” she said.

Hardman first got accepted by the Peace Corps and the Episcopal Service Corps, but when she prayerfully studied the details of those internships she didn’t feel called to the jobs. She turned down both opportunities, and prayed, “God, now what am I going to do?” The next day, the MCC called her for an interview.

Now she lives with a Christian host family as she works in the Cambodia Peace Museum and considers future graduate work, perhaps in museum studies. “The more experience you have,” she said, “the more skills you develop, and then the more ways God can use you.”

Internships:

How alumni who mentor

play a key role

t’s not hard to understand why a college student would want an internship, but business owner Mark Campbell has seen that the benefits run along a two-way street.

“I enjoy working with college students because I find them good at technology and they are quick learners,” said Campbell. “They are adaptable and they are high energy and sort of give a different perspective on life.”

A 2000 PBA grad himself, Campbell has hired four interns at his company Finance of Food. Located in Juno Beach, Florida, the company provides consulting for agriculturerelated concerns.

Campbell earned his MBA at Columbia University’s business school, and started his consulting practice in 2016.

As the business grew, he found that using interns helped him do full-time hiring.

“Practically, any time you’re hiring somebody, with the interview process it’s very difficult to get it right,” he said. “It really helps to work with somebody over an extended period of time to learn if there’s a fit.”

In May of 2018 Campbell hired PBA student Carlos Meneses as an intern. He soon saw that Meneses was intelligent and could “add value and do problem solving.”

After Meneses graduated with a finance degree in May of

2019, Campbell hired him as a full-time financial analyst.

Meneses, from Ecuador, at first had mixed feelings about internships, concerned that perhaps he’d spend his time making copies or running errands. But from the day one, he found that Campbell gave him meaningful tasks with much responsibility. “I’m really thankful for his leadership and trust in me,” he said.

Meneses eagerly worked through the financial modeling projects in his internship. “It’s more like real world,” he said, “because in class you learn about financial statements but you never actually do it with a real company.”

Campbell and Meneses found other common interests within their connection as PBA alumni. Both of them had grown in their faith at the University, and both had played sports.

Meneses played tennis for the Sailfish, going 6-0 in singles matches his senior year. When the athletic department announced end-of-semester academic achievement awards, there was Meneses’ name on the Provost’s List, for earning a GPA of 3.5 or better.

Campbell said he doesn’t intentionally seek athletes in his hiring, “but I do think athletics is typically a sign of drive and competitiveness, which are important in business.”

Meneses now helps Campbell analyze financial statements and prepare budgets, forecasts and packages for mitigating risks. He’s gone with his boss to meet potential clients and

learned about establishing good relationships with customers.

He’s learning much about owning a business and doing financial consulting, and he hopes someday to have his own business.

Business owner Campbell has participated in the mentoring program of the Rinker School of Business. In 2018 he received the University’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

Recently Campbell acquired a new business partner, Troy Bussmeir, a 1999 PBA graduate in finance and accounting.

Meneses is excited to help Campbell and Bussmeir grow the company. “It’s kind of special, the bond the three of us have,” Meneses said.

As Meneses thought back about finding an internship that led to a full-time job, he recalled that he learned about Campbell’s company from another PBA athlete and friend, Amy Schatzmann. She was a volleyball player and 2018 finance grad, and she had interned with Finance of Food.

After her graduation Campbell supported her in starting her own coffee business.

Before Schatzmann introduced Meneses to Campbell, Meneses had been looking online for internship opportunities.

“I’m not saying applying online is bad,” said Meneses, “but I think having good relationships is crucial for getting good internships and good jobs.”

Allison Rohn, a sports broadcasting major and a standout on the Sailfish volleyball team, is from Cedar Lake, Indiana. She interned with ESPN West Palm before graduating summa cum laude in May. She returns to PBA this fall to pursue her MBA and play beach volleyball.

Junior Christopher LeTourneau, a marine biology major, interned at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, Florida. Among his jobs was docent at the outdoor turtle hospital. He came to PBA from Kennebunkport, Maine, and hopes to pursue either education or research in marine conservation.

Elliott Barker, an international business major, is an analyst intern with Forbes Family Trust in Palm Beach. The trust and its affiliates manage some $5 billion in assets. Barker, from Great Britain, is goalie on the men’s soccer team. He won First Team AllSunshine State Conference honors as a junior last fall.

Rising senior Ashley Allen spent the summer as an intern with the New York Post, writing for the editorial pages. She is a communication major and journalism minor, and is incoming editor of the University newspaper, The Beacon. She is from Tampa, Florida.

Chad Wiatrowski, from Philadelphia, has been interning in uptown Manhattan with the investment bank Torreya. He has one semester remaining to earn his degree in finance, and he aims for a career in investment banking.

A double major in forensic science and psychology, Carlie Hayes is from DeKalb, Illinois.

She interned with the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office, DeKalb County Coroner’s Office and Washington, D.C.’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. She graduated from PBA in 2017 and recently completed her master’s degree in crime scene investigation at George Washington University.

Her internships “built upon each other,” she said, allowing her to grow in skills and in confidence about her career path. She accepted a full-time position as a criminal investigator with the federal government and has begun her training for the job.

Problem solver: ‘Thinking in-between,’ intern shines with Jenzabar database

T

he home-schooled girl who used to take apart old computers for fun has grown up.

Rising senior Abigail Martineau landed a highly competitive summer internship through the database giant Jenzabar, and at the end of May she flew out to San Diego for JAM, the company’s four-day annual meeting.

Jenzabar (www.jenzabar.com) is a technology innovator in higher education, providing software solutions and services to more than 1,350 campuses.

Martineau joined other interns eating dinner with the Jenzabar CEO during an all-expense-paid trip as preliminary to her internship. She attended a variety of training sessions and networked with the masterminds behind the Jenzabar software features.

Mary Regan, Jenzabar’s internship program coordinator, had pegged Martineau as a problem solver when she read the student’s application. Then as she observed Martineau’s interaction with the other interns, she concluded, “Abby was a great leader at JAM.” “God has gifted me in computer science,” Martineau said. “It’s how my brain clicks.” As she has worked to refine that giftedness, she said, “my professors have really poured into me. I’ve asked question upon question in their office hours.”

Assistant Professor of Computer Science Dr. Machica McClain described her as an eager student showing much initiative. “She was the one who would go beyond regular coursework, the one who wanted to find different ways of dealing with the database.”

Critical thinking is essential for success with databases, said McClain. “When clients tell you what they think they need, you have to be able to think also about what they’re not telling you, and be able to meet those needs. Abby is excellent at thinking in-between.”

A computer science major from Rhode Island, Martineau has thrived in rigorous coursework. (She described calculus as a favorite, “extremely hard, but so much fun.”) And she’s done much work beyond her academics. She’s been an RA and an assistant resident director. She’s also worked in Career Development, where she led the transition when the office switched from one software system to another.

Development, was so impressed by Martineau’s work that she wrote her nomination for the Jenzabar internship. That Martineau is working with Jenzabar “is quite a feather in PBA’s cap,” Ladd said.

After coming back from her Jenzabar jaunt in San Diego, before Martineau dived into her internship, she worked for two weeks with PBA’s Summer Science Camp. She had fun helping younger students program “Rovers,” calculator-controlled robotic cars.

Next, she moved over to Campus Information Systems (CIS), where she found, “they’re really friendly and crazy smart over there.” Paid by Jenzabar, she works on campus with CIS staff as they assign projects involving the Jenzabar system. At Palm Beach Atlantic, all the school’s student information, grades and financial information come back to the Jenzabar database, used daily by many throughout the University.

Martineau reports to Jason Thomas, CIS director, and has regular communication with Jenzabar staff members in Boston. She is the first PBA student to intern through this program, Thomas said. He quickly was impressed with her work: “For the tasks we’ve given Abby thus far, she’s knocked them out of the park.”

After PBA, Martineau eventually may pursue graduate studies, but first she’ll be looking for a fulltime job. “I’m not really sure what God would have me do, but I would be open to a lot of things,” she said.

With a computer science degree and her Jenzabar experience, Martineau will have exciting job prospects, predicted Jenzabar’s Mary Regan. Professor McClain agreed. “The Jenzabar internship,” she said, “is really going to expand her borders.”

NY Times cites PBA as a top performing school in grad rates

A

bout one in three students who enroll in college never earn a degree. The New York Times calls it “the college dropout crisis,” and The Times suggests that colleges struggling with graduation rates should learn from schools like Palm Beach Atlantic University.

Working with the Urban Institute’s Center on Education Data and Policy, The Times analyzed data from 368 colleges. In the newspaper’s May 23 report on the study, PBA takes its place on the chart of 15 “top performing schools” in terms of graduation rate.

“If struggling schools could learn some lessons from the high performers, tens of thousands more students could graduate from college each year,” The Times authors concluded. “Perhaps the biggest lesson from our reporting is that the colleges with higher rates of student success simply seem to have been trying harder for longer.”

Bob Lutz, PBA’s dean of students, cites the University’s Waypoint system as a key way the school helps more students succeed. Waypoint is a digital, cloud-based portal that allows anyone in the University community to register an early alert if they see a student struggling. Whether the struggle involves grades, physical health, mental health or social concerns, said Lutz, Waypoint “allows us to be made aware instantaneously and then to provide appropriate response.”

Of course, this digital system is only a tool, and it draws upon the University’s ethos of Christian concern, care and community.

In addition to retreats and times for spiritual emphasis, each week students get together at events through the office of Student Activities, Involvement and Leadership (SAIL). “We’re providing community,” Lutz said.

The New York Times study also noted that at colleges where more students live on campus, graduation rates tend to be higher. That’s one reason for Palm Beach Atlantic building a new, 510-bed residence hall (see page 16), Lutz said.

The New York Times used as its source the Student Achievement Measure. For each college, the researchers studied a recent class of full-time, firstyear students, and counted students as graduates so long as they received a bachelor’s degree within six years of starting college, even if they ultimately graduated from a different college. Joyfully serving in Uganda For pharmacy student Elizabeth Davis (at left and above), serving with a team in Uganda meant not only providing medical care, but also sharing prayer and joy with the local people. The Lloyd L. Gregory School of Pharmacy, in collaboration with The Gregory Center for Medical Missions, sent mission teams to Clarkston, Georgia; Honduras; the Dominican Republic; Uganda; and Nigeria during the spring and summer of 2019.

Davis served in both Uganda and the Dominican Republic, becoming the first pharmacy student to go on back-to-back foreign mission trips. It meant jet lag and long days, serving a new village each day, “but it was totally worth it and so rewarding,” Davis said. She hopes eventually to serve in medical missions as a full-time job.

In July, 2019, Davis received the Terry Gubbins Student Leadership Scholarship, given by the Florida Pharmacy Association. The award was established in 2014 by Gubbins, former chairman of the association board. Gubbins earned his master’s degree in leadership from PBA, and serves on the Gregory Leadership Council and as an adjunct professor with the Gregory School.

renowned Christian apologist, having debated with atheists such as Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins. He delivered the 12th annual President’s Distinguished Scholar Lecture and also spoke twice in chapel.

“There are some of you in this audience that need to switch off your electronic devices for a few Dr. John Lennox hours a day and get together with God,” said Lennox. “You’re the future. Your lives are before you. Decide now what to do, what to say and let nothing hold you back.”

Employee of the Year chosen Throughout the academic year the University celebrated its 50th anniversary, looking back to September 1968, when classes began. The celebration reached its peak on April 3 as students, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees and friends of the university filled the Rubin Arena to observe Founders Day. Three past presidents of the University, Dr. George Borders, Dr. Paul R. Corts and Dr. David W. Clark, reflected upon the 50 years of God’s faithfulness that enabled the school to grow into the thriving, comprehensive university that it is today. Two other special guests also took part in the program: Patrick Moody ’76, son of PBA founding president Dr. Jess Moody; and Claude H. Rhea III, son of Dr. Claude H. Rhea Jr., PBA president 1982-1990.

Economic impact up $2.9 million PBA’s Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness estimated that the University’s economic impact upon the local economy during the academic year was $403,580,425, which was $2.9 million higher than the previous year.

Oxford scholar offers challenge Oxford University emeritus professor Dr. John Lennox visited campus Oct. 8-9, and challenged students to “get into God’s Word to get to know God,” not just to prepare for a sermon or a class.

In August, Debbie Konynenbelt, administrative assistant to Provost and Chief Academic Officer Dr. E. Randolph Richards, was named Employee of the Year. A nominating coworker described her as “one of the kindest, most approachable and helpful people on campus, always ready to lend a helping hand.”

PBA honors business leaders George T. Elmore, founder and president of Hardrives of Delray, Inc., received the University’s American Free Enterprise Medal on Nov. 8. Elmore has been a key South Florida leader in business development and efforts helping young people.

University gains sixth Center of Excellence The University has created its sixth Center of Excellence: the Center for Biblical Leadership, housed in the Catherine T. MacArthur School of Leadership. After a year-long national search, executive leadership consultant Dr. Sam Voorhies was chosen to direct the center.

Voorhies has been president and CEO of Voorhies International Consulting since 2010, and held several leadership roles during a career of more than 25 years at World Vision. In his new role at PBA, he will oversee the development and implementation of the center’s educational programs, organize and lead an advisory board that will serve as the center’s ambassadors and promote the center through presentations, strategic networking and involvement in community events.

PBA’s other Centers of Excellence are the Gregory Center for Medical Missions, The LeMieux Center for Public Policy, the David and Leighan Rinker Center for Experiential Learning, the Titus Center for Franchising and the Center for Integrative Science Learning.

Silvers, of Boca Raton, is vicechair of the board of directors of the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach and chair of its development committee. She is immediate past co-chair of South Florida PBS, the public broadcasting station for South Florida. She also serves on the PBS Foundation Board in Washington, D.C. Silvers is known for her philanthropy, her mentoring of young women and her wide-ranging community service.

The Women of Distinction luncheon is an annual event honoring women who have made significant contributions to the community. Luncheon proceeds benefit a scholarship fund for female students at Palm Beach Atlantic University.

Former Congressman Tom Rooney was appointed Senior Fellow for the LeMieux Center for Public Policy. He will serve as a distinguished lecturer in the Politics Department of the University’s School of Arts and Sciences, and will teach an undergraduate course in criminal law in the upcoming fall semester. Rooney, who recently retired from Congress, represented Florida’s 17th district since 2008.

Judge Jeanine Pirro continued the center’s lecture series on Feb. 27. A former judge who hosts “Justice with Judge Jeanine” on the Fox News Channel, she drew a full-house crowd for her public lecture, speaking on “America Today: The Courts, The Media and Violence in Society.”

In addition to public lectures in the DeSantis Family Chapel, O’Hanlon and Pirro also spoke to the President’s Lyceum, a smaller forum allowing distinguished visitors to interact with a group of highachieving students.

Two more students win prestigious Fulbright award The Fulbright U.S. Student Program selected May graduates James Davisson and Allison Rice to teach English and serve abroad. The Fulbright honor is a highly-selective, prestigious award for a year of international study that aims to foster understanding between U.S. citizens and those of other countries.

Davisson, an intercultural studies major, heads to South Korea to teach primary or secondary school students and also North Korean refugees. He is from Anderson, Indiana. Rice, from Frederick, Maryland, will teach young people in Bulgaria. She is a biblical studies major with a minor in English.

The University’s Prestigious National Scholarships Committee shepherded both Rice and Davisson through the Fulbright application process. Faculty members Dr. Carl Miller, Dr. Elizabeth Stice and Dr. Don McCulloch serve on the committee, along with Dr. Robert Lloyd, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and the Loreen Beisswenger Farish Chair for Political Thought.

PBA accreditation reaffirmed The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has reaffirmed the University’s accreditation through 2028. The decision was released at the association’s annual meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, in December.

University mourns death of trustee Robert S. Lafferty, a trustee emeritus of Palm Beach Atlantic University, died Dec. 7, 2018, at the age of 83.

A Fort Lauderdale resident, he was retired chairman of Hill York Service Corporation. Lafferty became a trustee at Palm Beach Atlantic in 1991, serving on the academic program and development committees, and was appointed an emeritus trustee in 2016.

Nearly 600 graduates received their diplomas on May 6, hearing a commencement challenge from former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux. “God has put you here for a reason,” LeMieux said. “He has given you enormous talent. Use those talents and find your calling.”

LeMieux is chairman of the board of Gunster law firm and founder of the University’s LeMieux Center for Public Policy. The graduation ceremony was held at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.

Fall semester graduates heard from the Rev. Wayne Padgett, a graduate from PBA’s Class of 1972. He shared his memories as PBA’s first student government president and member of the first graduating class.

“Every year miracles have been taking place in the lives of the students who attend Palm Beach Atlantic and today, you are one of those miracles,” he said.

Nearly 300 grads walked the stage during the Dec. 8 ceremonies, held at the Expo Center of the South Florida Fairgrounds.

Jess Moody, 1st president, dies

Dr. Jess C. Moody, 93, founding president of Palm Beach Atlantic University, died Dec. 7, 2018.

As pastor of First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach (now Family Church Downtown), Moody shared his dream to start a Christian college in the Palm Beaches. He served as president for four years, and was pastor of the church for 15 years.

Senate confirms alum as tax court judge Just before its August, 2019 recess, the U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination of Emin Toro to a 15-year term as U.S. Tax Court judge.

Toro is a 1997 graduate of Palm Beach Atlantic and a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Law. He was a partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm Emin Toro, during a 2014 visit to Palm Beach Atlantic. Covington & Burling LLP.

Alumna wins Corts Award

PBA alumna Dr. Suzanne Cardona, associate professor of biology, received the year’s Charles & Hazel Corts Award for Outstanding Teaching during an honors chapel in May. She graduated from Palm Beach Atlantic in 1999, and has taught here for 10 years.

“I was so well-prepared by the Supper Honors Program and the science faculty,” she said. “I knew I wanted to come back and be a part of that tradition of training students for their next steps.”

Dr. Paul R. Corts and his wife, Diane, established an endowment fund to provide the annual award in honor of his parents and in recognition of their commitment to higher education.

The David and Leighan Rinker Center for Experiential Learning sent nearly 500 students, faculty and staff abroad to 35 countries.

That compared to 340 travelers and 29 countries in the 2017-2018 academic year.

The center sends out students through three programs: Study Abroad, which provides semesterlong cultural experiences; Class Abroad, which enhances the learning experience by adding an international component to a course taken at PBA; and Serve Abroad, with serving opportunities around the globe, including 16 countries in 2018-2019.

The center added two new Study Abroad programs, at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and in Armenia, Colombia. Partnering with the Christian and Missionary Alliance of Colombia, the latter program is designed for majors in intercultural studies and ministry.

Anneliese Hardman, who studied abroad at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Oxford, was awarded the de Jager Prize for excellent academic performance by Scholarship and Christianity in Oxford (SCIO).

Courtney Lovely, who has been with Sailfish Athletics since 2015, assumed the role of director of athletics in June.

She previously served as senior associate athletic director for internal operations, senior woman administrator and Title IX deputy coordinator.

Prior to joining the PBA staff, Lovely served at the NCAA National Office in

Indianapolis as an assistant director in academic and membership affairs.

Construction has begun on a new, 510-bed residence hall at 351 Pembroke Place, directly across the street from Oceanview Hall and the Dixie Parking Garage. The eight-story building will feature 154 apartment-style units with full kitchens.

The University is “making the housing attractive to draw students back to living on campus,” said President William M. B. Fleming, Jr. At present 54 percent of undergraduate students live in campus housing. The goal is to increase that to 65 percent.

PBA’s strategic plan calls for expanding campus residence life, which “develops culture, community and sense of care,” Fleming said. “Research that shows living on campus helps students succeed at higher levels both academically and in their development as young adults.”

The developer, Hedrick Brothers Construction, expects to complete the project in the third quarter 2020.

Academic Programs School of Arts and Sciences Dr. Thomas Chesnes, professor of biology and chair of the Biology Department, is the science advisor for Knox Theological Seminary as part of the Science for Seminaries Phase II Project, funded through the Dialogue on Science, Ethics and Religion program within the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also a member of the John D. MacArthur Beach State Park Education Advisory Committee and a member of the Lake Worth Lagoon Initiative-Habitat Working Group (Seagrasses), Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resource Management.

Galapagos: Thirteen students and three faculty, Dr. Thomas Chesnes, Dr. Robert Lloyd and Dr. Kris Dougherty, ventured to the Galapagos Islands as part of the Department of Biology’s Natural History of the Galapagos Islands course abroad offering. The group observed the wealth of wildlife expected in the Galapagos, including numerous rare species.

Dr. Mirela Garren, assistant professor of French/humanities, was selected to judge the Pathfinder Scholarship Awards, foreign language section. The Pathfinder Awards program is one of the largest and most comprehensive high school scholarship programs in the state of Florida.

Dr. Marsha Guntharp, professor of mathematics, was appointed newsletter editor for the Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Dr. David Horkott, associate professor of philosophy, was selected to be the service-learning faculty fellow for the next four years as PBA rolls out its new service-learning themed Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).

Dr. Lisa Marzano, director of Writing Programs, is a board member of the Southeastern Writing Center Association.

The Prestigious National Scholarships Committee oversaw expanded engagement with the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and other major national awards. A year after having four applicants, one semi-finalist and one winner in the Fulbright Program, in 2018-19 the University had 17 applicants, nine semi-finalists and two Fulbright winners: Allison Rice and James Davisson. (See page 14.) Four Fulbright semi-finalists were designated as alternates for their respective countries. The Prestigious National Scholarships Committee is comprised of Dr. Robert B. Lloyd (dean, School of Arts and Sciences), Dr. Carl F. Miller (English), Dr. Elizabeth Stice (history) and Dr. Don McCulloch (psychology).

PBA’s Alpha Zeta Mu chapter of the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society won the Outstanding Chapter Award as the top honor society in the nation (out of more than 800 university chapters) for the second time in three years. The chapter established a new high by having 10 students accepted to present at the Sigma Tau Delta International Convention in St. Louis in March. Chapter President Rachel Sakrisson won Sigma Tau Delta’s national Summer Internship Stipend Award to cover her living expenses while interning for Sen. Marco Rubio in Washington, D.C. PBA’s London Semester saw nine students and one faculty

mentor (Dr. Carl F. Miller) go abroad in the fall to study and teach at the University of Roehampton in southwest London. Miller has been appointed to the Children’s Literature Association’s Judith Plotz Emerging Scholar Award Committee and the Edited Book Award Committee.

School of Communication and Media PBA’s Children’s Theatre was launched as an ongoing program within the School of Communication and Media’s Department of Theatre and Cinema Arts. The Children’s Theatre supports the school’s mission of the study and practice of redemptive storytelling by offering classes and stage experience for grades 3-12.

The news documentary Four Families in Mafraq, for which Israel Balderas, assistant professor of convergence journalism, served as executive producer, won multiple awards. Balderas traveled to Jordan with PBA students to film Iraqi refugee families awaiting permission to emigrate to the United States.

The film’s honors include two Communicator Awards of Excellence, one in the film/video/TV student category and another in the film/video/TV documentary category. The film also was a US International Film and Video Festival Award winner in the student productions category. The Fort Worth Indie Film Showcase awarded the documentary with its first laurel and premiered it to a wide audience on July 27. It also has been selected by the Solutions Journalism Network as a powerful example of relevant reporting on refugees. PBA student Tim DeMoss was director and editor of the film, assisted by Sarah Roulette.

The 2019 Florida Society of News Editors journalism contest, student division, cited PBA’s student news website The Beacon Today. The Beacon editorial staff won second place in the commentary category. In the video storytelling category, Madeline Coggins won third place, and in the audio category first place was taken by Sarah Roulette, Alex Pimentel and Michaela Payne. The Florida chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists nominated The Beacon Today as a finalist in the categories best campus news website and best news story.

Dr. Stephanie Bennett, professor of communication and media ecology, was appointed to the board of the Media Ecology Association and named its social media director.

She also was invited to serve on the advisory council of the International Jacques Ellul Society. Additionally, Bennett served as the speech coach and student mentor for the annual Q Union event at PBA. Dr. Wes Jamison, associate professor of public relations, served as the chairman of the advisory board for the Animal Agriculture Alliance in Washington, D.C., and as a member of its issue management committee. Jamison also serves on the membership committee of the Palm Beach County chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and as the faculty advisor for PBA’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America.

He co-produced The Addams Family again in Orlando with Kids Theatre Kamp. McCoy produced and directed a world premiere musical, The Luck of Roaring Camp, created by PBA alumni the Lubben Brothers. Finally, McCoy served as a stage combat guest artist with the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

Dr. J. Duane Meeks, dean of the School of Communication and Media and professor of mass media, served on the board of directors for Potentia Academy, a middle and high school for students with unique learning challenges.

Don Piper, professor of sports broadcasting, served as the chair of the Broadcast Education Association’s Sports Division. As the lead professor in the new sports broadcasting major, he supervised the video webcasts of 128 games and seven press conferences.

These webcasts garnered 55,681 unique views over all events with an average viewership of 412 per event. Piper also served as the executive producer for the sports documentary Arkady, which was directed by PBA student (now alumnus) David Merrill. The film won first place in the Sports Video Group’s College Sports Media Awards in the special feature category.

Kyle Schnack, assistant professor of theatre, developed a theater program for the secondary level at Atlantic Christian Academy. He also served on the secondary scholarship committee for the Southeastern Theatre Conference and as an adjudicator and presenter for both the Kravis Center Dream Award and the Pathfinder Awards.

A crime thriller motion picture script Eclipse of the Heart, written by Antonio Zarro, professor of cinema arts, won four awards: second place at the Chautauqua International Film Festival, second place at the Transylvania Cinema Awards, semi-finalist at the Los Angeles Cinefest and semi-finalist at the Circus Road Contest. Zarro served as a judge for the Telly Awards, which annually showcase the best work created within television and across video. Additionally, he served as chair for the Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts, Writing Division. PBA’s Cinema Arts program won five awards at the festival, placing 13th among 100 universities.

School of Education and Behavioral Studies Dr. Marcia Bedasse, associate professor of education, was appointed to the City of West Palm Beach Education Advisory Committee as vice chair.

Dr. Vince Diller, assistant professor and program director of athletic training, was awarded a three-year, $35,000 NetVUE Vocation Across the Academy Grant for development of a Transformational Advising Program. Diller was appointed the Teaching Center for Excellence faculty advising fellow to lead the project. Diller accepted appointment to the Athletic Trainers Association of Florida College and University Athletic Training Committee and served as a faculty member for the Student Leadership Enhancement and Professional Success Program.

Dr. Timothy Ladd, associate professor of education, was appointed as a member of the NCAA Division II Academic Requirements Committee. His term of service on the committee continues through Aug. 31, 2022.

Dr. Matthew Mitchell, associate professor of health and human performance, was awarded best poster presentation at the 2019 PBA Interdisciplinary Research Conference.

Dr. Cheryl Serrano, professor of education, conducted six focus groups with Miami Dade College faculty for United Faculty of Miami Dade College, AFT Local 4253.

Serrano was invited to be a conference proposal reviewer for the WIDA Annual Conference (Detroit, Michigan). Serrano served as chair for the Bilingual Teacher of the Year Selection Committee with the National Association for Bilingual Education.

Dr. Cori Thompson, assistant professor of athletic training, served on the National Strength and Conditioning Association Florida State Advisory Board.

Academic Programs

Lloyd L. Gregory School of Pharmacy Accreditation: The Doctor of Pharmacy program has been granted continued accreditation until June 30, 2025, by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. This represents the longest term of accreditation for the school since its inception.

Gregory Center for Medical Missions: The School of Pharmacy, in collaboration with the Gregory Center for Medical Missions (GCMM), sent mission teams comprised of students, faculty, alumni and various friends of the school to Clarkston, Georgia; Honduras; the Dominican Republic; Uganda; and Nigeria during the spring and summer of 2019. (See photos on page 10.) Since 2003, the school and center have sent 55 teams around the world to serve the needs of others. More than 20,000 patients have received medical care and spiritual encouragement during that period.

The GCMM launched its inaugural speaker’s forum with guest lecturer Dr. David Stevens. He is CEO of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations, as well as the author of many books, including Jesus, M.D. The center also hosted Ron Brown, associate director of Global Health Outreach, who visited PBA to facilitate team leader training for participants and leaders on medical mission trips.

Catherine T. MacArthur School of Leadership In October the MacArthur School of Leadership hosted the 20th Annual International Leadership Association (ILA) Conference at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.

More than 1,100 leaders from over 50 countries convened around the theme “Authentic Leadership: for Progress, Peace, and Prosperity.” Dr. Craig Domeck, dean of the school and associate professor of leadership, was the conference chairman.

Dr. Audy Johnston, associate professor of leadership, was ILA conference program co-chairman.

Dr. Jim Laub, professor of leadership, led a Vision and Strategic Planning Process for the international Christian organization Women in the Window. The organization reaches out primarily to women in the “10/40 window,” the geographical window 10-40 degrees north of the equator, home to many living in poverty. Laub also led a Vision and Strategic Planning Process for The Refuge Ranch, a Christian program for women in addiction.

Dr. Art Johnson, professor of leadership, taught a PBA leadership course for the Solomon Leadership Program, a values-based leadership effort focused on high school student leaders. The MacArthur School partners with the program’s sponsor, the Palm Beach Synagogue.

Dean Domeck provided a six-part leadership component for the Junior League of the Palm Beaches Cotillion Academy, which prepares enrolled middle-schoolers for life and leading.

Domeck also facilitated strategic planning with the board of First Serve, a local non-profit engaging young students to be impactful leaders in their own communities. Additionally, he led the strategic planning process with the High School Global Missions Team of the non-denominational Christian organization Cru.

School of Ministry Guest lecturer Dr. David Stevens Post-Graduate Residency Education: The School of Pharmacy launched two new pharmacy residency programs.

A Post-Graduate Year (PGY)-1 community pharmacy residency program was launched in collaboration with Atlantis Pharmacy. The program is directed by Assistant Professor Dr. Erin Dorval with the support of Dr. Damien Simmons, owner of Atlantis Pharmacy. Additionally, a PGY-2 residency in ambulatory care was launched in collaboration with the West Palm Beach Veterans Affairs Medical Center. This program is directed by Associate Professor Dr. Amy Henneman.

Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series: The school hosted Dr. Suzanne Nesbit as the inaugural speaker for the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series. She is American College of Clinical Pharmacy president and a Johns Hopkins pain management specialist. She encouraged the many student-

The Kern Family Foundation awarded the University a $555,000 grant to double enrollment in its accelerated bachelor’s degree and Master of Divinity program through expanded recruitment, scholarships, vocational mentoring and church partnerships. The program allows students to complete the Bachelor of Arts and M.Div. in five years, including 600 hours of ministry training at four supervised apprenticeships.

In February the school hosted its inaugural Faith & Culture Forum, with lectures and panel discussions on Christian perspectives on war and peace. Visiting scholars were Dr. Nigel Biggar, the Regius Professor of Moral and Pastoral Theology at the University of Oxford; Dr. Myles Werntz, associate professor of Christian ethics and practical theology at Logsdon Seminary; Dr. J. Daryl Charles, Acton Institute affiliated scholar in theology and ethics; and Dr. Janna L. Hunter-Bowman, director and assistant professor of Peace Studies and Christian Social Ethics at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary.

Dr. Jonathan Grenz, dean of the School of Ministry and associate professor of ministry leadership studies, taught a pastoral ministries course in Colombia for pastors and missionaries of the Christian and Missionary Alliance.

Dr. Dan Warner, adjunct ministry professor at the Orlando Campus, traveled to Israel for an archaeological dig at Tel Hadid, an isolated hill northwest of Jerusalem.

Dr. Case Thorp, adjunct ministry professor at the Orlando Campus, was named moderator of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church denomination (EPC).

Dr. Dirke Johnson, adjunct ministry professor at the Orlando Campus, who is also on staff with Cru providing executive leadership development, served a week in Vilnius, Lithuania, helping train global leaders becoming certified as facilitators of Cru’s Building Powerful Ministry Team Training.

Dr. D. Eric Lowdermilk, associate professor of biblical and theological studies and coordinator of the Orlando Ministry Program, accepted the role of interim pastor at Oasis at Conway Gardens, a Southern Baptist church near Orlando.

In April Dr. Dough Dorman, adjunct ministry professor at the Orlando Campus and founder and president of Your Next Step Ministries, along with his wife, Joan, and three of their children, held a retreat in Switzerland with business leaders and missionaries serving throughout Europe.

Dr. Justin Hardin, professor of biblical and theological studies, is interim pastor at North Stuart Baptist church.

School of Music and Fine Arts Dr. Lloyd Mims, dean emeritus and professor of music, taught at the international Fondation Bell’Arte summer music festival in Paris at the Maurice Ravel Conservatory. Under his direction, the PBA Symphony performed Ravel’s Bolero as

Artist in Residence Marilyn Mims adjudicated the national Schmidt Vocal Competition in Ohio and taught at the international Fondation Bell’Arte summer music festival in Paris.

Professor of Music Dr. Tim Thompson’s composition Prélude for Carillon was premiered at the College Music Society’s International Conference in Bruges, Belgium.

Dr. Joseph Kingma, assistant professor of music, performed recitals and masterclasses at the Dorothy MacKenzie Price Piano Series at the University of Toledo; the Toledo Piano Teacher’s Association; Arts Alive! Concert Series in Hershey, Pennsylvania; Palm Beach Chamber Music Festival; Spring Hill Orchestra in Nashville, Tennessee; Steinway Nashville; University of North Alabama; American Liszt Society in Chicago, Illinois; Good Shepherd International Concert Series in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series in Chicago, Illinois; and Monroe Symphony in Louisiana. He also adjudicated the Palm Beach County Music Teachers Association Scholarship Competition.

Jin Hanley, assistant professor of dance, taught at Project Dance Orlando, performed with Ballet Florida, taught at Dancing Waters Summer Dance Intensive and taught and danced at Project Dance Paris.

Artist in Residence Eileen Hebron taught summer intensives in ballet for New York State Summer School of the Arts.

Dr. Kathleen Klein, professor of dance, served as a dance panelist for the Florida Department of State’s Division of Cultural Affairs, where she assisted in the awarding of arts grants submitted to the Florida Cultural Affairs Council.

Dr. Ken Phillips, professor of music, was a team member for the Florida Department of Education’s Teacher Certification Examination Competencies and Skills Validation workshop.

Heather Couch, assistant professor of art, was selected to exhibit her work in Geologic Shift, a conference exhibition at the National Council for Education in the Ceramic Arts conference in Minnesota.

Professor of Art David Pounds was awarded first place in Delphi Glass’ Art Class Festival stained glass category with his work entitled “Watch Your Six.”

Marshall E. Rinker Sr. School of Business Dr. Lane Cohee, associate professor of management, provided 40 hours of training to a 16-person cohort at the Florida Department of Transportation in May. The training covers all 49 processes of the Project Management Institute (PMI) ® Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) ® and prepares the cohort for the PMI Project Management Professional (PMP)® examination later in the year.

Academic Programs

Dr. Mary Kay Copeland, professor of accounting, completed her master’s in theology from Northeastern Seminary in December 2018, completing five faith integration lessons for her final project. Copeland was selected as a national council attendee for the American Accounting Association’s annual meeting and was an invited speaker at the Northeast meeting. She continues as a national board member for the Microsoft Dynamics Academic Alliance and was selected as a national council board member for the American Accounting Association.

Dr. John Hayes, professor of marketing, delivered two seminars at the International Franchise Expo in New York City: the “A to Zs of Buying a Franchise” and “Are You A Perfect Fit for Franchising?” He taught the same topics in London and Frankfurt franchise expos. The first seminar also was delivered at the U.S. franchise expos in Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Los Angeles and Chicago.

School of Nursing Received a renewed grant from Palm Healthcare Foundation to continue the Volunteer Nurse Corps (VNC) for 2019-2020.

Dr. Fontaine Timmer, director of the VNC, and Dr. Deborah Morgan, associate professor of nursing and faculty advisor to the VNC, will continue to lead the grant-sponsored work for vulnerable populations in Palm Beach County.

Added two new concentrations under the Nurse Practitioner Track: Adult Gerontology Primary Care and Psychiatric Mental Health.

Dr. Deborah Morgan was re-elected to serve on the research committee of the Florida Organization of Nurse Executives.

She also was elected to sit on the board of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (Palm Beach County Chapter).

Dr. Jennifer Kuretski, associate professor of nursing, was named Nurse Practitioner of the Year 2018 by the Nurse Practitioner Council of Palm Beach County. She serves as vice president of the Nurse Practitioner Council of Palm Beach County and is in her second term as secretary for the Chi Phi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. She serves as a research development consultant for the University of Technology in Kingston, Jamaica. She re-certified as an American Academy of HIV Medicine HIV specialist, and opened a new Midway Specialty Care Center office in West Palm Beach, where she specializes in the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections.

Dr. Racquel Vera-McLean, associate professor of nursing, was accepted to the National League of Nursing’s (NLN) LEAD Program 2019 cohort in Washington, D.C. NLN LEAD is a year-long program to train and develop nurses who aspire to lead and become change agents. She serves as an Advisory Committee member for the Youth Outreach Program: Promoting the Nursing Profession under the National Consortium of South Florida.

Dr. Jill Shutes, assistant professor of nursing, has initiated a new nurse-led clinic at The Waterford, a Continuing Care Retirement Community. The goal of the clinic is to provide opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to learn the specialty of geriatrics and to give back to the

community. Shutes serves as a member at large with the Gerontological Advanced Nurse Practitioner Association.

Dr. Nakisha Kinlaw, associate professor of nursing, has worked collaboratively with the Warren Library, Office of Registrar, Admissions, Student Affairs, Campus Safety and Security, School of Ministry, School of Counseling, Gregory School of Pharmacy, School of Nursing and MacArthur School of Leadership to train faculty, staff and students in mental health first aid and/or CPR/first aid. Kinlaw and Dr. Jacintha Cauffield of the School of Pharmacy also serve on the VA Suicide Prevention Task Force. Kinlaw and Dr. Amos Abioye of the School of Pharmacy served as co-leaders for a mission trip to Egbe, Nigeria.

Orlando Campus Hosted the first annual Servant Leadership Conference for 50 local business, non-profit and community leaders. The theme was “Thriving Together.”

Hosted the fourth annual Ministry Forum for local pastors and ministry leaders, this year featuring Dr. Paul Copan, who presented “The Goodness of God in an Evil World.”

Created and launched an online orientation course for new students using the learning management system Canvas.

Launched the Orlando Campus Alumni Council to help increase local awareness of the campus and increase enrollment. The group is led by two-time alum and former Orlando Campus staff member Shannan Lewis-Blair.

Hosted a variety of campus community-building events throughout the year, including: fall kickoff, game night, movie night and student appreciation week.

The School of Ministry installed web conferencing equipment in an Orlando Campus classroom for collaborative learning between West Palm Beach and Orlando.

Laura Rendon-Finnell, instructor of counseling, hosted a school counselor panel for graduate students in the school counseling track, featuring Orlando Campus alumni who are now professional counselors in Central Florida schools.

Dr. Jeremy Couch, executive director and assistant professor of leadership, served as the research chair and executive committee member for the National Association of Branch Campus Administrators.

Couch facilitated a free workshop for local professionals entitled “Creating a Strategic Road Map for Success.”

Warren Library Elizabeth Fairall, digital services librarian, served as coordinator of the Emerging Library Professionals Interest Group for the Association of Christian Librarians. She also served as judge for the PR Xchange Awards of the Library Leadership and Management Association.

Michelle Keba, reference librarian, served on the editorial board for the Journal of Library and Information Services in Distance Learning. She also co-organized the inaugural virtual poster session for the Association of College & Research Libraries Distance Learning Section Instruction Committee.

Accreditation and Assessment Facilitated a successful process for the decennial SACSCOC Reaffirmation of Accreditation.

Created new processes and provided support to deans and faculty that resulted in the following new curricular offerings: two new majors, 18 new concentrations and four new graduate certificates for 2019-20.

Continued to improve the annual planning and assessment process including these additions: the 2019-20 catalogs now include program learning outcomes (PLOs) for all majors; program chairs provide a three-year review on one PLO that demonstrates use of student data for improvement of learning; and each PLO assessment section now includes space for prior year plans for change and what actually happened.

Institutional Research & Effectiveness Reorganized to become a stand-alone unit that reports to the provost, with a research and data analyst hired in February.

Administered two new institutional surveys: National Assessment for Service and Community Engagement (NASCE), measuring the depth and frequency of student community service in multiple areas; and SpiritPulse, assessing an individual’s relationship with God, spiritual life programs at PBA and overall well-being.

Provided accurate and accessible summaries of institutional statistical data on an annual basis, such as IPEDS, Common Data Set, Fact Book and many others.

Utilized an online portal to facilitate Academic Program Reviews for divinity and journalism.

Admissions Created new LAUNCH campaign and branding aimed at helping students focus on their future, created new automated communication flow for the Orlando Campus and implemented automated process for student visa application.

Conducted the first Farish “Signing Day” ceremony, raising awareness of the Farish Scholarship.

Automated communication through SLATE for campus visits and campus events and created a satisfaction survey within SLATE for individual visits, tours and specialty day events.

Promo Team student workers generated more than 65 “selfie” videos to connect with prospective students.

Traditional Undergraduate added a homeschool liaison, Emily Freeman.

Graduate, Evening and Online implemented a new partnership with the City of Boynton Beach offering programming to city employees and a new partnership with Church by the Glades offering ministry degrees to church members.

The fall incoming Doctor of Nursing Practice class was a record high.

Athletics

Team Accomplishments: Men’s Soccer, Sunshine State Conference (SSC) champions and tournament champions, posted the best winning percentage in NCAA DII with a 191-1 record. Head Coach Brian McMahon was SSC Coach of the Year. Volleyball, ranked as high as No. 3 in AVCA Top-25, made its seventh-straight NCAA South Region Tournament appearance and advanced to the championship match.

Individual Accomplishments: All-American honors went to Molly Burkhardt and Jennie Anderson, volleyball; and Juan Sanzhes, Elliott Barker and Claudio Rivadeneira, men’s soccer. Nineteen players earned All-South Region awards, and Amber Rowoldt in volleyball was AVCA South Region Freshman of the Year.

In scholar awards, 24 student-athletes achieved a 4.0 GPA in at least one semester and 143 were named to the SSC Honor Roll.

Chapel Hosted Christival 2018 (Spiritual Emphasis Week) with Dr. Sam Chan, author of Evangelism in a Skeptical World.

Chapel Guest Speakers included: Ed Kobel, president and COO of DeBartello Development; Dr. James Scroggins, lead pastor of Family Church; the Rev. Todd Mullins, lead pastor of Christ Fellowship; the Rev. Jeff Robinson, lead pastor of Grace Fellowship; the Rev. Chris Tress, lead pastor at Bow Down Church; Ed Henry, Fox News Channel’s chief national correspondent and author of 42 Faith: The Rest of the Jackie Robinson Story; and Dr. Joey Dodson, associate professor of biblical studies at Ouachita Baptist University.

Campus Ministries and CM Global (Missions) Hosted three Celebration of Nations gatherings featuring passionate international guest speakers: Dilip Joseph, medical doctor who was kidnapped by the Taliban; Keith Copley, PBA alumnus who lived many years in Southeast Asia and who is the father of two PBA students; and Marty Woods, life coach and national festival coordinator.

Provided a personal growth training opportunity for global development project leaders to attend the international leadership program JH Ranch.

Conducted a five-session Leadership Academy led by Dr. Craig Domick, dean of the MacArthur School of Leadership.

The sixth annual Justice Week featured speakers from the International Justice Mission and from a unique urban ministry center in Boston serving immigrants and refugees.

Student Development Retention In the Waypoint early alert management system, reporting from faculty, staff and students increased more than 200 percent compared to the previous year. A record fall-to-spring retention rate of 92 percent was achieved for the fall 2018 firsttime, full-time freshman cohort of 521 students.

Academic Support and Disability Services Academic Enrichment Workshops continued during the fall semester with 263 students attending ten workshop sessions.

New topics included: Thinking Critically; Managing Stress, God’s Way; The Story Workshop; and Reading is Fundamental.

The Bridges Scholars Program had a 100 percent retention rate from fall to spring semester, with all 19 students returning.

Comfort Olugbuyi, assistant director of academic support and Bridges advisor, assisted with the creation and execution of the Achieve Summer Collegiate Institute for 30 rising high school juniors and seniors from Palm Beach County.

Career Development A new career management system, Handshake, launched on July 30, 2018. It has more than 3,000 active employers with over 3,000 unique jobs and internships posted. A total of 67 percent of current students have created profiles in Handshake. (pba.joinhandshake.com) The fall career fair drew 75 employers and more than 300 students. The spring career event, “What’s Next Fair,” for seniors only, had 67 employers and 55 students.

First Year and Transfer Experience Held three degree-planning parties, drawing 360 students.

The FYTE office has increased the tracking of all student scheduling interactions. As of May 25, 2019, 457 schedules were built and 732 student interactions.

MOSAIC, the student-led cultural initiative, continued to create educational programs for students to see, celebrate and explore cultural diversity. Programs included: Love in Allies, a chapel on interracial love, marriage and family dynamics in a divided world; 125th & Lenox, a Harlem Renaissance themed coffeehouse organized in collaboration with the SAIL Steering Committee; Art After Dark, a private, curated tour of African American art for students, faculty and staff at the Norton Museum; and Wednesdays in April, exploring Latin culture through legacy, style, stories and food.

Health and Wellness Implemented Medicat, the new electronic health record software, to enable the clinic, counseling services and academic support and disability services to maintain student files electronically and enhance interdepartmental communication.

PBA alumna Caroline Lockmiller returned to PBA as Health and Wellness coordinator. Programming included the following topics: mental health awareness, body image, alcohol and impairment awareness, relationship violence, abortion panel discussion and women’s and men’s health nights.

Residence Life Collaborating with the Housing Task Force, the office updated and revised a number of procedures and policies to optimize housing, pursuing the Master Plan goal of 65 percent of undergraduate students living on campus.

Student Activities, Involvement and Leadership (SAIL) Campus Recreation, which includes club sports, intramurals, recreational activities and fitness, is now under the SAIL office.

Kerry Condon, a PBA graduate with a double major in cross cultural studies and Christian social ministry, is the Campus Recreation coordinator.

The Moodys, a red carpet awards show, took place this spring in the DeSantis Family Chapel.

This event celebrated the accomplishments and talents of the student body through performances in theater, dance, music, comedy and video. Moody Awards for each of PBA’s core values were given to students who were nominated by their peers.

Through the use of event tracking data and software, SAIL programming tracked 1,301 students and Steering student events tracked 1,280 students during the year. The data is to point to programming that best engages the student body.

Workship In concurrence with Palm Beach Atlantic University’s 50-Year Anniversary, Workship celebrated 50 Years of Workship. Over the last 50 years, students have served 3,372,445 hours locally, nationally and globally. There has been a 2 percent increase in completion of hours served by first-time, full-time students from 76 to 78 percent. There also has been a 2 percent increase in graduates who serve over 25 percent of the Workship requirement, from 32 to 34 percent.

The Workship team continues to benefit from the presence of AmeriCorps VISTA member Tensia Clark, who has focused on continuing to build community collaborations to benefit kindergarten through university students and their families who live near the Marshall and Vera Lea Rinker Athletic Campus. The ESL (English as a Second Language) program completed its second year at Belvedere Elementary School.

The Parker Avenue Consortium has had 300 students and 22 teachers benefit from the ten different programs and events.

Clark recruited 91 volunteers to serve over 491 hours this year.

Registrar Evaluated and revised processes and forms to provide better customer service. Tools were expanded to allow multiple departments to access student FERPA information.

Collaborated with CIS and Admissions to refine the process for receiving and reviewing transcripts thereby reducing the time for awarding transfer credit.

Kathy Majzner, registrar, and Dina Ernst-Bishay, assistant registrar, facilitated a roundtable at the Jenzabar Regional Users Group hosted at Southeastern University.

Majzner was selected by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers to teach Registrar 101, an online course for members of the profession who have been in registrar or registrar-related positions for less than two years. w w w.pba.edu

Completed the Rinker School of Business second floor renovation with new furniture and technology in the common areas, classrooms and the dean’s suite. Added card readers to buildings across campus to further improve access control and security. Upgraded all card readers at Oceanview Hall.

Upgraded all University copiers and multifunction printers, which coincided with a three-year renewal of the University’s partnership with Saxon/Xerox. Renewed partnerships with National Management Corporation, ADPro, Hill York, Southern Waste Management, Orkin and Knight Fire with multi-year deals. Completed a University-wide asset inventory. Led the University’s successful participation in the Green Business Challenge hosted by the City of West Palm Beach.

Financial Aid. Awarded 4,253 students and disbursed $81 million in scholarships, loans and grants from federal, state, private and institutional sources. Entered into a new partnership with the I3 group this year with the termination of the American Student Assistance’s $ALT program agreement.

These partnerships continue to show a positive return on investment as shown on the three-year draft Cohort Default Rate (CDR). The University’s draft CDR for the 2015 cohort was only 5.4 %, compared to the national average of 10.8 %.

Campus Information Services: Continued to emphasize cybersecurity awareness through PBA’s S.A.F.E (Security Awareness for Everyone) initiative. Provided regular updates to the campus community on relevant cybersecurity topics. Information and recommendations received from an independent, third-party security firm’s cybersecurity assessment provided CIS with a road map for enhancing PBA data and system security.

Implemented an initiative to create visionary plans that document “teaching and learning outcome specific” technology needs to benefit students and enhance teaching as part of PBA’s technology strategic planning.

Augmented streaming technology, touch-interactive surfaces and remote management systems. Notable completed projects include: Rinker School of Business Phase I, upgraded lighting in the Weyenberg Center and implementation of an eLearning solution (Zoom) that can be leveraged campus-wide for distance learning.

Alumni Relations Signature Fundraising Event: The 31st annual Palm Beach Atlantic University Alumni Association Golf Tournament held Sept. 29 raised $52,700 for the association’s scholarship fund.

Tournament sponsors include BMS CAT, Tire Kingdom, Saxon Business Systems, Advanced Painting Contractors, Hill York, Templeton & Company, Arrigo Dodge, Preferred Printing, PROforma PNP Marketing, Signs by Tomorrow and PGA National Resort and Spa. Events Held: Alumni gathered for 47 events, including homecoming activities and regional meetings in Central Florida, South Florida, Washington, D.C., and Tampa.

Scholarships awarded: The Alumni Association Scholarship Fund awarded 56 scholarships totaling $84,000 to undergraduate students. Recipients Olivia Guinta, Caroline Rosenbalm, Kendall Taylor and Joshua Bartz graduated cum laude. Recipient Emily Trense graduated summa cum laude.

Recipient Joshua Bartz was Outstanding Graduate of the Department of Ministry.

Distinguished Alumni Awards: In celebration of Palm Beach Atlantic University’s 50th Anniversary, 50 Notable Alumni were recognized at the Alumni Celebration on Nov. 3 during Homecoming 2018. In addition, Mariela Quesada ’13 was named to the PBA Sports Hall of Fame for volleyball and Ashley Dolberry ’13 for basketball.

lacrosse, volleyball and men’s soccer. Vera Lea Rinker Hall was busy with MalletLab percussion, Youth Orchestra of Palm Beach, Palm Beach Chamber Music Festival and Hope Symphony. The University also hosted Parents Educating Children, Bank of America Career Fair and Student Life mission camps with middle and high school students attending, bringing the summer to a close.

Parent Relations Partnered with The Junior League of the Palm Beaches to present the Children’s Carousel Concert.

Hosted monthly prayer group meetings for parents.

Facilitated Cleanout for a Cause, collecting truckloads of items from students moving out of the residence halls to be donated to Goodwill Industries, Solid Waste Authority, Belvedere Elementary School food pantry and Resource Depot.

Parent Council members were on campus to help welcome students and their parents at Open House, SOAR and Welcome Week. Family Weekend offered a full schedule of events for everyone in the family. The Parents Fund raised more than $31,000 and provided scholarships for eight recipients of the Emerging Leader Award.

Probate and Pumpernickel The prestigious and long-running educational series for attorneys and CPAs had 892 attendees, with programs in West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Naples, Sarasota, Boca Raton and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and Greenville, South Carolina.

University Relations and Marketing

The Annual Scholarship Fund increased its donor count by 56 percent over the previous year. Fundraising in both Athletics and the Parents Fund resulted in record-breaking money raised and a record number of donors to the University. The peer-to-peer campaigns were instrumental to success to capture 120 new donors to support athletic programs.

Community Services Hosted more than 13,000 guests on campus. Highlights included concerts featuring Robert Sharon Chorale and Masterworks. Events out of the Greene Complex for Sports and Recreation included basketball tournaments, volleyball tournaments, karate tournaments, Pathfinders and Sunfest 5K. Events in the Weyenberg Center included Philanthropy Tank, Everglades Symposium, Early Learning Coalition, the Art of Storytelling and the Women’s Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

Summer camp groups included Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership conference, PBA’s Center for Integrative Science Learning, Mission Fuge, Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge, Broadway Intensive Series and Achieve Palm Beach County.
