Through school and traveling, my exposure has expanded. I’ve been able to experiment with different ways of designing. To me the process of developing form, spatial layout, and designing experience instead of just shelter becomes a constructed art that evokes emotion in all. A design language that has emerged from my works are elements such as expression through the ultimate use of lines and planes, while carefully considering the project economy and pursuing sustainability. The goal of my work is to promote thoughts, to excite the user, and to make the user feel safe and calm.

Mid Century Modern Museum From the continuation of a smaller gallery project, this New York City museum is a home for many of the most iconic pieces of mid century modern furniture.

The overall style derives from the mid century modern style and is inspired by architects like Nelson, Saarinen, and Eames. This third year project explores a high level of detailing and code comprehension.

Through the recessed entry, visitors are greeted by the info desk before transitioning up to the galleries or over to the gift shop.

Movement is guided by changes within the dropped ceiling, often located in common, waiting spaces. The open fifth floor gallery is dedicated to George Nelson, a prominent furniture designer, which was explored in the detailing of the interior spatial qualities of the preceeding project.

George Nelson developed much more than furniture. See left, his experimental house, which was a series of reconfigurable pods clients could develop how they wanted to live.

This concept was brought into the project to serve as a way of displaying some of the more iconic pieces. The metal fins that run along the southern facade of the building work to diffuse most of the light creating warm, naturally lit galleries without the harshness of direct sunlight that might wash out the furniture over time.

At night the building can be light up such to emphasize ‘The Illinois’, an unbuilt tower by Frank Lloyd Wright. This recreation, which fills a 3 story atrium, ties all the galleries spaces together and represents the highest level of mid century modern design from that era. Clean lines, organic forms, and the use of natural materials and light come together to complete this museum. Contrasting materials and a bold use of lines perpendicular to planes are used in such a way that the design can be striking without being an overbearing site.

The Nelson Gallery was a preliminary project to the Mid Century Modern Museum. Instead of working on exterior qualities, this project focused solely on interior qualities. Important controlling factors include how light is casted into the spaces, how movement is controlled, and how to best display the work of George Nelson.

This study project began with research into the mid century modern era as a whole. Evaluating the characteristics and iconic designs. Clean lines, organic forms, a ‘less is more’ mentality, simplistic and natural design drove the project to fruition. Warm natural light enters from thin linear openings that are carefully positioned to light up circulation spaces, but not intrude on the carefully lit display spaces.

Display spaces are lit with artificial light similar to how the circulation space are lit. A series of wood slats are used to frame the spaces that the display pieces live and lights sit within the slats. Different tones of wood and the black and white contrast of the display spaces allow the gallery to be bold without distracting from the furniture. The materials and color reflect that of the mid century modern era. This way, the furniture can be a home with its own style.

MID MIX ATX

The Mid Mix ATX (Austin, TX) project was an accelerated 4th year, summer studio project. What was supposed to take 5 months to do was condensed into an 8 week period. The project consisted of intense research into the building code and zoning codes specific to Austin, TX. Due to the shortened period of time we did not focus on architectural expression. Instead, emphasis was on designing a code friendly and structurally accurate building. Alluded by the project title, the project is a mixed-use building offering new office, retail, and residential space in an area of new development. Additionally, this project was completed in teams with divided up work and responsibilities.

1415 Eva St. Austin, TX

The city of Austin has had a revamp of of zoning. The city has pushed for more mixed use development in new constructions. Mixed use project types can automatically recieve a higher rating than projects with a single building type. The 1415 Eva St. site is a fitting location for a mixed use building due to its proximity to other residential properties, offices, and retail businesses. Much like the given program, this location can serve as the ultimate intersection, creating a sense of strong community. Street shopping, comfortable work environments, and convienent apartments give this project a lot to offer. Additonally, the parking can be used in a way to allow for farmer’s markets, food trucks, or other outdoor activities to strengthen this community aspect.

SECTIONAL ANALYSIS OF PROGRAMATIC RELATIONSHIPS

In a short schematic phase we determined that an orthogonal design and a flexible layout for program would be best for allowing the community to use the building as they see fit. Program, divided between floors, was determined by accessibility in public and private terms. Rather than have a parking lot between the road and the building, the parking lot sits in the back so small events like farmers markets, performances, or gatherings can take place in a more personal way.

This project was the first real life approach to the design process. To complete the assignment we had to create a set of construction documents with all necessary sections, plans, elevations, and details with table sets of door, window, and structural specifics. Additionally, we did research into companies and consultants to find products to use in the design. These included the high energy efficient windows, furniture with in the building, and the trimstone cladding to name a few. This offered new challenges for me, but by the end of the summer I was confident in my understanding of these details.

I also experienced the challenge of working as a team in a virtual manner. We used Revit Worksharing which proved to be a reliable way of collaborating the design. Zoom and Microsoft Teams were a valuable way of communicating with each other.

The Artist’s Refuge is the first project involving architecture. Prior to this all our projects had been conceptual and abstract. Site analysis and development were essential before a design could be created. Entry into the site had to be considered along with tight requirements for square footage of the building. The program consisted of

a sleeping and living space and then spaces for artists to work in. The spaces in this retreat project had to be flexible to allow different kinds of artists to work in. I chose to divide these spaces into two separate buildings, one for work and the other for living. I had a lot of fun on this project being able to design experiences for both the exterior and

interior spaces. I enjoyed thinking about what an artist would want to work in and how through my architecture they could be inspired. Natural materials and light heighten the sense of truly being isolated in nature. A large reflecting pond on the south side and the multiple gardens give the visiting artists many outdoor environments to react with.

Mt. Mitchell Interpretive Center The Mt. Mitchell Interpretive Center was a third year design for a research and interpretive center in Wamego, KS. The site has significance to local Indian tribes and early settlers. Mt. Mitchell is a is a large hill that looks out over much of the local landscape. The buildable site is located at the bottom of the hill. Part of the Bowman Design Competition, I had to greatly consider the impact that this would make on the history of the site along with those who visit. This was my first large scale project and focused mostly on learning computer programming and designing holistically rather than in great detail.

Program for the interpretive center includes event spaces, gallery spaces, an auditorium, and a library/research spaces.

The building is programatically divided in a pin wheel shape with public event spaces at each end and research paces and administration spaces along the hallways from the lobby. The flexible event space (located at the right side of the floor plan) looks up to the hill. The land around this space butts up to the bottom of the windows so visitors feel as if they are a part of the hill. The gallery space (located at the top of the plan) can be opened to the exterior for special events.

The gallery is transparent between the interior and exterior offering a direct view to the hilltop.

The hallways, event space, and gallery are all transparent between the exterior and interior. Large supports with a gabion cladding allow for views out into the landscape while providing shade into the spaces. The gabion wall is made of stones found during site construction and would help emphasize this connection to the history of the hill and the landscape around it.

Kessler Park Water Reservoir For my last year of school I am attending the Kansas City Design Center. KCDC is an alternative program through Kansas State University that shifts the focus of projects to a broader range of architecture, plus urban planning and design. Rather than being handed a project with a scope to design within. KCDC aims to determine what the project should be through intense research and community engagement. Local organizations and those in the public have a great influence on how the project takes shape. For this year, KCDC has been tasked with bringing new life to Kessler Park and more specifically the abandoned water reservoir that sits inside.

Working in a group of 11 on one project has been rewarding as being able to hear the opinions of others and learning to work to together and collaborate have become easier. Having a common goal of bringing new life to this park and the community that lives around it, we were able to strengthen the studio relationship to produce work that is wellthoughtout and meaningful.

Like most projects, this one began with an intensive amount of research. Demographics, public relationships, and creating a general understanding of the conditions were all aspects we looked into. I was tasked with looking into the morphology of the Kessler Parks and Boulevards system. It was apparent that Kessler Park was a significant anchor park from the beginning. However, over time the park system began developing in a different direction and Kessler Park was overlooked.

ROOMS

Another area of research went into identifying the outdoor “rooms” that are implied within the park. This helped to characterize which spaces are used in which ways. Then, relationships between spaces began to reveal themselves. Three conditions were seen as edge boundaries: the roads (especially the one that winds around the reservoir), foliage, and topography.

These three conditions influenced the form of many of the outdoor spaces.

From there, three primary rooms began to emerge with multiple secondary and tertiary rooms indicating more specific spaces. First, the blue rooms are seen as activity spaces. Picnicking, disc golf, jogging, and other sports are primarily done in these space.

Second, the purple rooms are seen as the entrance spaces. These spaces are all along the main road that leads to the park, as well as, the entrance to the road the circulates the park. Off this road are smaller secondary rooms.

Lastly, the yellow rooms are seen as rooms for addressing watershed issues.

The terrain is extreme and it has many issues with storm water pooling. These spaces are rarely used by visitors, so the decision to dedicate these rooms to watershed can help improve other rooms and their activities.

After an extensive research period, a series of concepts were developed that helped inform the first design decisions for the Master Plan. These diagrams include a new way of thinking about accessibility to the park, the nodes within the park, and redefining the significant transportation routes. These and more were made to establish a criteria set that would guide us through the Master Plan and the reservoir options.

MASTER PLAN - OVERALL

I was given the task of developing the Master Plan for the studio’s reservoir design options. This plan functions as a framework for the design options to fit within. There are three areas in the Master Plan that have a strict functions and designs that cannot be altered by any of the design work in the following stages. As discussed in the room diagrams, one area of framework is an open space that addresses watershed issues. This area consists of two retention ponds and stepped terraces that control the flow of runoff water. The second condition is the entry to Kessler Park. The entry streets, Wabash Ave. and Prospect Ave, are both major streets that lead to the park. Wabash will serve as a pedestrian oriented street while Prospect will remain vehicle oriented.

The last area of concern is parking. Prospect will lead straight to a new parking lot dedicated to overflow parking. Daily users will use onstreet parking along Wabash.

After the Master Plan had been developed, the studio was broken up further into smaller groups to develop three schemes that fit within the Master Plan. Each scheme has a different level of physical intervention to the reservoir. I was in a group called ‘Preservation’. This was the least invasive of the schemes. Conceptually, the user of the reservoir is able to experience the reservoir in a controlled way. This is accomplished through a sequence of ramps that snake through the basins. Beginning in the north basin, the ramp ends in the south basin where a tower that supports many of the communal functions of the reservoir celebrates the end of the sequences. Much of the community supports this design because it preserves the graffiti and current conditions, while creating a place for the community and larger city to come together. Much of the work is unfinished and requies more thought, but we are excited about this work in progress.
