Granite, the main rock used, is very hard to cut and even with today's modern technology it can take hours to do so. Most of Machu Picchu's stone steps are carved out of a single piece of granite, which is quite remarkable considering how difficult and time consuming it must have been. Irrigation systems were also in place and ran between buildings and at the edges of the city. (Rediscover Machu Picchu)

Abandonment and Discovery The city of Machu Picchu was built at the height of the Inca Empire, but it was in use for less than 100 years, around the time of the Spanish conquest of Peru. It was then abandoned in the early sixteenth century. However, it is interesting to note that Spanish conquerors never found Machu Picchu and despite plundering many other Inca sites, this most sacred site remained a secret. (Destination: Machu Picchu)

Machu Picchu remained hidden away from the rest of the world until 1911 when an 11–year–old native boy led an American professor named Hiram Bingham to the site. Did you know that there are seven wonders of Ancient Egypt? The seven wonders include, The great pyramid at Giza in Egypt, The hanging Gardens of Babylon, The statue of Zeus at Olympia in Greece, The temple of Artemis at Ephesus, The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, The colossus of Rhodes, And The lighthouse at Alexandria in Egypt. The great pyramid of Giza, The great pyramid of Giza is also known as the pyramid of Khufu or the pyramid of Cheops. It is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex bordering what is now El Giza, Egypt. It is the oldest of the seven wonders of the ancient world , and the only one to remain largely intact. There are three known chambers inside the Great Pyramid. The lowest chamber is cut into the bedrock upon which the pyramid was built and was unfinished. The so–called Queen's Chamber and King's Chamber are higher up within the pyramid structure. The main part of the Giza complex is a setting of buildings that included two mortuary temples in honor of Khufu (one close to the pyramid and one near the Nile), three smaller pyramids for Khufu's wives, an even smaller "satellite" pyramid, a raised causeway connecting the two temples, and small mastaba tombs surrounding the pyramid for nobles. The hanging gardens of Babylon, the most popular theory is that the hanging gardens was built by the king Nebuchadnezzar to make his wife happy. She was home sick for the plants and gardens of her home land.

The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World

Seven Wonders of the Ancient and New World

The world is full of beautiful places but there are some places that are considered from the wonders of the world. These places and buildings were named as the seven wonders of the ancient world. Herodotus, A Greek historian, wrote about these wonders thousands of years ago. At this time, he thought that these buildings were the greatest structures in the world and he made a list of these places and called it the Seven Wonders of The Ancient World. A wonder is a structure created by something strange and amazing; when we see it, we say that it is rare and unexpected.

Although there are several wonders in the world, there are seven that are recognized as being ancient.

Tom Jackson, in his book The SevenWonders of The World, has written that the great pyramids of Egypt; they are the most ancient and historical place in Egypt, were built in Giza. These pyramids are very old, they have been there for over four thousand years. It is believed that the shape of these pyramids symbolized the prehistoric knoll from which they believed life emerged. The big sizes of these pyramids symbolize the power and the greatness of their country back in that days.

Another structure that considered also one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. They are also known as the hanging gardens of Semiramis. Nebuchadnezzar II IN 200 BCE, wanted to please his beloved wife Semiramis so he built these gardens. The Get

The original seven wonders of the world list is "The Lighthouse at Alexandria, The Great Pyramid at Giza, The Colossus of Rhodes, The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon". (The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Silverberg) This list can be both problematic and lacking because the reading and the website article both show different illustrations on what the seven wonders look like. This can be problematic because many people may see different images of them and not get the right idea of what they look like. This can also be lacking because, the information may not be gathered correctly and give false information on what they look like. Both sources the reading "The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World" and the online source "Ancient.eu / The_Seven_Wonders" both say different things on where they came from. For example the reading says that the list comes before Christ and a poet Antipater drew up the list and the online source says that the list comes from Themala "Greek things to be seen" and was created by Philoof Byzantium. The "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World" is a list that historians have traced back to the second century BCE. However, when inspected closely, the list appears to be biased because in the printed source says the list comes from before Christ and a poet Antipater drew up the list. In the online source the list comes from themata "Greek things to be seen" and were

Mausoleum of Halicarnassus * The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was a tomb built between 353 and 350 BC in Turkey for Mausolus, a satrap in the Persian Empire, and Artemisia II of Caria, his wife and sister. * It stood approximately 45 meters (135 ft) in height, and each of the four sides was adorned with sculptural reliefs created by each one of four Greek sculptors . * The beauty of the Mausoleum was not only in the structure itself, but in the decorations and statues that adorned the outside at different levels on the podium and the roof: statues of people, lions, horses, and other animals in varying scales. The four Greek sculptors who carved the statues were each responsible for one side.

* The Mausoleum overlooked the city of Halicarnassus for many years. It was untouched when the city fell to Alexander III of Macedon in 334 BC and still undamaged after attacks by pirates in 62 and 58 BC. It stood above the city's ruins for sixteen centuries. Then a series of earthquakes shattered the columns and sent the bronze chariot crashing to the ground. By 1404 AD only the very base of the

There are Seven Wonders of the Ancient World known today. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The Great Pyramid of Giza, The Temple of Artemis, The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, The Colossus of Rhodes, and The Lighthouse of Alexandria. With years of research on all seven wonders, there are many questions left unanswered today. Most of these questions include important facts about the status itself. Where were they located? Why were they created? What happened to them? The most important unanswered question can be asked of all seven of these wonders, did they even exist? These questions are raised by the curiosity of architects, scientists, historians, and anyone with a bit of imagination with a love for history. We can only gather research to get a glimpse into the ancient world and let our imagination take control until we can gather enough evidence to be positive that yes, these seven wonders of the world did exist. All seven wonders of the world had a powerful meaning behind them. A temple to worship, statues dedicated to Gods, and even the burial ground of a great King and Queen. King of Caria Maussollos and his Queen Artemisia were laid to rest in what is known as The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. A tomb that was created by his Queen Artemisia, likely a place for her to go to grieve the loss of her husband. This mausoleum was built in 353 B.C. around the time of his death. The Lighthouse of Alexandria was located in Alexandria, Egypt the Pharos was actually located on the tiny limestone island that sat in front of the harbor, it was built on the island of Pharos, to help guide trade ships into the harbor at Alexandria (Woods). The Lighthouse was constructed in 290 BC and took 20 years to complete, it also was the first lighthouse as well as the tallest building in the world at the time, except for the Great Pyramid and that is also why it was considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The Lighthouse stood and used until 2 earthquakes, in 1303 and 1323, reduced it to rubble. In 1994, underwater archaeologists located some of the remains of the lighthouse in the Alexandrian Harbor, and more have recently been located using remote imaging. Some remains of the Pharos were also used in the construction of Fort Qaitbey in the 15th century (Curlee), which stands on the very same spot today. Cherisiphron commissioned the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus and also known as the temple of Diana, along with his son Metagenes who were from Crete (Curlee). Of the Ancient World

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus in Olympia, the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. These are seven absolutely magnificent structures, built in the ancient world. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient Worldwere first called themata, which translates in Greek to 'things to be seen'.

The Great Pyramid of Giza, located in Egypt, was built between 2583 and 2561 BCE for the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu, also Known as Cheops in Greek culture. The Great Pyramid of Giza was the tallest man–made structure for nearly 4,000 years. The excavation of the interior of the pyramid was initiated in the late 18th century and early 19th century. The structure itself, with its imposing height and perfect symmetry, is what impressed most ancient visitors. The Great Pyramid is also the only one of the Seven Wonders which still stand in fabulous condition to this day.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are also one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Hanging Gardens was built by the Babylonian ruler, Nebuchadnezzar, as a gift to his wife. Diodorus Sicilus, an ancient writer, had wrote that Nebuchadnezzar's wife, Amtis of Media, had missed the beautiful landscape and flowers of her homeland, and to please his wife, Nebuchadnezzar had a temple built. The Great Pyramid Of all the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, only one still stands today: the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza in Egypt. Surprisingly, it is by far the oldest of the Seven Wonders. It was already more than 2,000 years old in the time of the ancient Greeks. For more than 4,000 years, the 481–foot–high pyramid was the tallest structure ever built by humans. It is about as tall as a fifty–story building. No other building reached that height until the Eiffel Tower was created in 1887 (Putnam 20). The pyramid's square base, 756 feet long on each side, is 13 acres, or the size of seven city blocks. The five biggest cathedrals of Europe could be all fitted into the pyramid at the same time (The Pyramids). How did this...show more content...

Because of the pyramid's pointed shape, the building itself acted as a kind of ramp to help the king on his journey (Scarre 22). However, in addition to the religious meaning, there were also practical reasons for why the ancient Egyptians chose the pyramid's shape. The pyramid is a strong, stable shape because it has a wide base and narrow top. It is much harder to knock down than a vertical building, which is why ancient pyramids still stand today. In addition, the tomb's sheer size, and the cost and difficulty of building it, made clear to the whole world that the pharaoh was a very powerful man. Indeed, Khufu, who built the Great Pyramid, has been called "probably the most powerful pharaoh ever to rule Egypt" (Putnam 18). By the time of Khufu's reign, about 2551–2528 B.C., the Egyptians had been building pyramids for only about a century. They had gotten better and better at the construction. While their earlier monuments had been made of mud brick, in about 2680 B.C., the Egyptians discovered how to build with large limestone blocks. Soon after they mastered building with stone blocks, the Egyptians changed their technique. They switched from building step pyramids, which had a series of smaller and smaller levels rising to the top, to the true pyramid shape, which is smooth. Although today the Great Pyramid has a staircase–like appearance, that is because the outer layer of limestone has been torn away over the centuries. When it was built, it would have looked

The Ishtar Gate was built by constructed by King Nebuchadnezzar II in 575 BCE. It was one of eight gates built of the inner city of Babylon which today is Iraq. This gate was the main entrance into the great city of Babylon. The Ishtar Gate was so well known that it made the list of the seven wonders of the ancient world, but was later replaced with the lighthouse of Alexandra. Some people to this day still say that the Gate of Ishtar should still be one of the seven wonders. What makes this gate so wonderful and great that it used to be considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world? The Ishtar gate was dedicated to the Babylon goddess Ishtar. Ishtar was the goddess of fertility, love, war, and sex. On the gate there are three types of animals a lion, dragon, and a bull. The lion is represented of the goddess Ishtar. The other two the bull and the dragon Nebuchadnezzar had put in to pay homage to two other gods. The young bull represented Adad and the dragon represented Marduk. Adad was the god of the weather and Marduk was the national god of Babylon. The goddess Ishtar is a Mesopotamian goddess that stands for war and sexual love. In the Sumerian tradition the goddess Ishtar takes the role as a fertility figure. But she is also a much more complex character she is always surrounded by death and disaster within her myths. The Akkadian Ishtar was the protector of prostitutes and the patroness of the alehouse. Her worship in this religion

Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

Abstract

Various Wonders of the World lists have been compiled over the ages in order to catalogue the most spectacular natural and man–made constructions. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is the first known list of remarkable man–made creations of classical antiquity, and was based on guide–books popular among Hellenic sight–seers and only includes works located around the Mediterranean rim. Later lists include those for the Medieval World, the Modern World, the Natural World and others. The list that will be discussed today is theSeven Wonders of the Ancient World. The historian Herodotus (484 BC–ca. 425 BC), and the scholar Callimachus of Cyrene (ca 305–240 BC) at the Museum of Alexandria, made early lists of "seven wonders" but...show more content...

The gardens were destroyed in an earthquake after the 1st century BCE. The lush Hanging Gardens are extensively documented by Greek historians such as Strabo and Diodorus Siculus. Through the ages, the location may have been confused with gardens that existed at Nineveh, whose king at the time was Nimrod, since tablets from there clearly show gardens. Writings on these tablets describe the possible use of something similar to an Archimedes' screw as a process of raising the water to the required height. The Greek Historian Diodorus (Antipar) said: "The Garden was 100 feet long by 100 feet wide and built up in tiers so that it resembled a theater. Vaults had been constructed under the ascending terraces which carried the entire weight of the planted garden; the uppermost vault, which was seventy–five feet high, was the highest part of the garden, which, at this point, was on the same level as the city walls. The roofs of the vaults which supported the garden were constructed of stone beams some sixteen feet long, and over these were laid first a layer of reeds set in thick tar, then two courses of baked brick bonded by cement, and finally a covering of lead to prevent the moisture in the soil penetrating the roof. On top of this roof enough topsoil was heaped to allow the biggest trees to take root. The earth was leveled off and thickly Get more

In a world filled with tradition and conventions, one man underwent a rigorous journey to achieve Nirvana; that man was Siddhartha Gautama. With his success, came the birth of a new religion called Buddhism. His journey to reach Nirvana was marked by important sites that are now popular and religious attractions visited by Buddhists everywhere. These historic sites are known as the Seven Wonders of the Buddhist World. The Mahabodhi Temple, also known as the "great awakening" temple, is located inBodh Gaya in North–Eastern India. The beginning of Buddhism began when Siddhartha Gautama reached Enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree at this temple. Even with the torment of demons, Siddhartha Gautama reached Nirvana when the sun rose up in the east. It was here where the Buddha finally understood the human condition of suffering and sorrow. The original structure of the temple was erected during the reign of Gupta Kings. The present temple, now the Mahabhodi Temple, was constructed by Emperor Asoka and holds a colossal image of the Buddha. The temple served as a way to tell the world how much Buddhists valued their shrines and statues. Presently, Buddhists around the world come to this awakening site to seek the seven sacred places, with the seventh location consisting of the Buddha's attainment. As a result, the Temple is said to be the most sacred site in Buddhist history. Wat Pho contains the largest and oldest Buddhist temple in Bangkok and is home to more than 1,000

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

Ancient history shows the Seven Wonders of the Ancient world highlighted by Philon of Byzance. After Alexandre the Great the canonical list of seven wonders was presented: the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. They are claimed to be the most remarkable creations of the ancient world due to their uniqueness, beauty, forms and innovations. Classical world had never seen such constructions before. The chosen figure "seven" not simply exemplifies perfection, but also shows the number of known planets including the Sun and the Moon. The chosen four wonders are the Colossus of Rhodes, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. The mentioned wonders were located in northern Africa, Greece and minor Asia. (Clayton & Prince 1990)

The Colossus of Rhodes is a bronze statue representing the God of the Sun in Greece – Helios. The statue was built by the Greek sculptor Charas of Lindos. Historical researches assume that the statue honored the victory against the Macedonians, in particular against Demetrios Poliorcete. The date of its creation is argued to be between 303 and 291 BC, so the process of its construction took over twenty years. The statue was located near modern Saint–Nicolas Day mole. After some marble blocks had been found by archeologists, the
