The Rotary tradition lives on. The ambiance at the Grand Ballroom of the Marriot Hotel was both pompous and solemn. For on the night of July 8, 2018 the leadership baton was passed from The Great Governor Nestor "Chito" Borromeo, Jr. to the Inspiring Governor Pastor "Mar" Reyes, Jr. The acceptance of the responsibilities by the new Governor highlights the hundred-year-old Rotary tradition of a friendly turnover that assures the continuity of the mission of Rotary to put service above self.

The heartening presence of Spouse Chit, sons Rafael, Gabriel and Lorenzo Miguel at the oath-taking of Governor Mar before Rotary International Director Rafael "Raffy" Garcia III emphasized the importance of family in the life of a Rotarian. Governor Mar will serve with his family during his year-long stint as the servant-leader of RI District 3780. And with his Inspiring District Officers, Governor Mar promises a prolific, congenial and exciting Rotary Year. (The Governor's Message on Page 4.)

I would like to share with you moments with my great presidents last June 30 in the afternoon, the last day of our term as Rotary leaders for this year, in my house. The get-together for a Bar-B-Q and wagyu steak fellowship became an opportunity to organize ourselves as a batch, and to gather commitments of TGP’s to provide continuity in strengthening their respective clubs and support the district activities of Governor Mar Reyes. It was a happy fellowship, and afterwards, TGPs showed their support to their classmates by attending 2 club turnovers of leadership before we finally transited to a resto bar for a count down on the 12 midnight ending our term. We sang the song “Auld Lang Syne” – it

THE POWER OF NICE

A

fter 24 governor's visits so far in the months of June and July Rotarians have been one in amazement as we have been churning a previously unheard of district officer attendance of 15 or more on average, sometimes even reaching more than 20 district officers at a time. This can be attributed to a lot of factors—a truly inspiring Governor, the excitement of a brand new Rotary year, a truly strong set of district officers, a little luck, and maybe a little dose of nice.

What is this “dose of nice”? You see, after every governor's visit, we make sure to send through text a thank you message to all the district officers who attend the GV and/or induction. It is our way of genuinely showing our appreciation for the time and expertise being shared by the various district officers who join us in the daily GV and induction grind.

Moreover, we hope it also reminds everyone that the act of being nice to others can actually do great wonders in our day to day relationships and at the same time, inspire more good deeds and transformative action in our respective communities.

CARING FOR THE DISPLACED PERSONS IN MARAWI IP Ricky A. Bunao Rotary Club of New Manila South

T

he 2017 war between the government forces and the Maute group in Marawi City in Mindanao displaced over 350,000 persons who need humanitarian assistance. According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Office in Cagayan de Oro City some are living with their families, relatives and friends. Others are staying at the evacuation centers in Misamis Oriental, Lanao del

Norte and Lanao del Sur. The specific concerns of the displaced persons are the lack of access to sanitation, water supply, food, health facilities and decent clothing. The family food packs stored at the DSWD warehouse were insufficient.

To augment the supplies the DSWD called for voluntary assistance.

RI District 3780, through the Presidents-Elect of RY 2018-2019, organized the “Bayanihan handog ng Rotarians” project, the first activity of this group in partnership with the DSWD. Forty-five volunteers participated at the project’s event on last October 17, 2017.

The program began at the UP Bahay ng Alumni with commencement activities conducted by Baby Rotarian Ferdie Ang Suan, PP Rose Espiritu and IPP Beverly Joson. The participants were encouraged to join The Great Inspiring Walk every Sunday from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. at the UP Academic Oval.

The State of the District is healthy. We have 100 clubs, with 2,494 members. Of these 69.09% are gentlemen, 30.79% are ladies with 0.12 unreported gender. We are delighted to have 355 (14.23%) millennials below the age of 40. Based on the plans submitted by the Clubs we can expect a surge in membership by as much as 30%.
