We added pressure onto the girls to come back to Plymouth with the three points, and they delivered.

Welcome to Manadon Sports and Community hub.

For today’s fixture against Oxford United, I would like to thank the fans who travelled to Keynsham to support the girls last week.

It was great to come away from Keynsham last week with our first 3 points of the season. The performance in the first half of the game wasn’t great, but we were clinical in front of goal, with two superbly taken goals from Gabi and Tash. The second half did improve, and a quick flurry of goals from Gabi, Zoe and Emily killed the game, allowing the girls to relax and gave us more confidence to move the ball around.

We added pressure onto the girls with the expectation to come back to Plymouth with the points, and the girls delivered. The atmosphere at the club is brilliant and with a lot of new players added to the squad this season, the players and staff are all starting to gel, and the coach trips are always eventful.

We have been missing a few players over the start of the season due to Universities not starting and players having to return home, which has hindered the selection slightly. Still, those players who have

played out of position, such as Tracey Cross and Sophie Perrin have been excellent.

We welcome one new addition to the squad this week, with Jemma Rose joining the team. Jemma has trained with the club for a few weeks now and has settled into the team. We also have Lydia Huntley and Rosie Train available for selection, which adds more depth to the squad.

Oxford have had a good start to the season and have been a strong side in the league for the last few seasons. We know they are missing Kayleigh Hines, who suffered a leg fracture against Portsmouth last weekend, and all at Plymouth Argyle would like to wish Kayleigh a speedy recovery.

Getting to know...

Rosie Train Defender Rosie began playing football at the age of 10, beginning her football journey at Plymouth Argyle and Devon Under 12’s. Rosie continued to develop with Argyle and Devon while also playing at Under 16 level for Plymouth Aspire.

Despite starting her career as an attacker, Rosie has quickly adapted her game and cemented herself as the Argyle Women’s first-choice left-back. One of several young players to break into the team during the 20/21 season, Rosie’s career

so far has been defined by her versatility, work ethic and strong mentality regardless of her young age.

Rosie’s past as an attacker has played a big part in how she plays at left-back.

While certainly not afraid to get stuck into a challenge, Rosie is at her best when bombing down the wing to supply crosses and create chances for her teammates in this attacking Argyle side.

Keynsham Town ladies 1.5 PAWFC Sunday 29th august 2021, 14:00 The AJN stadium

Argyle got their first win of the season as they completed a 5-1 route of Keynsham Town ladies.

Keynsham actually started the game better than Argyle with the pilgrims failing to clear their lines after a succession of crosses from their Bristolbased opposition – but fortunately for Argyle, Soper was there to palm away any clear cut chances.

From there, Argyle took control of the game and scored the opener after just 10 minutes as Gabi Alphous spun her marker down the left-wing and coolly fired the ball into the far corner. After that, Argyle began to assert their dominance, with Crawford, Ireland and Knapman all going close to extending the Pilgrims lead. Then in the 35th minute, Knapman would extend Argyle’s lead as she latched onto Cunningham’s pass and fired past Kier for her 1st goal of the season.

Then as the half-time whistle beckoned, Keynsham appeared to have found a way back into the game as Butcher picked up the loose ball in midfield and expertly curled the ball into the top corner. However, Argyle showed their class in the second half to extinguish any hope of a Keynsham comeback. Just 3 minutes into the restart and Alphous again turned her marker, this time from the right-wing, before unleashing a left-footed finish that curled beautifully into the top left corner.

Then with Keynsham still reeling from the third goal, Argyle quickly added a 4th with Cunningham doing what she does best and firing a long-range freekick past Kier. With the game all but won, Argyle could relax and play their free-flowing football. Alphous nearly got a hattrick, and if not for a last-ditch tackle from Grogan she would have surely scored Argyle’s 5th. Instead, it was Alphous’ replacement, Eaton, who would seal the win for Argyle. After being played in behind by Dandy, Eaton slammed the ball into the bottom corner with her first touch of the game.

After not being rewarded for their good performances against Portsmouth and Southampton, it was a well-deserved three points for Argyle to get their season up and running.
