Abstract

Περίληψη

The dissertation consists of three parts, two research and one practical. The subject of research was the possibility of translating the vocabulary of the American director Wes Anderson into architectural applications.

It was important, in order to understand the work that was finally produced, to analyze the cinematic and directing technique of the director. His latest live-action film, until the execution this project, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” of 2014, contributed to this.

Additionally, the shooting area of the film was examined, as inspiration for determining the direction of the application study.

As a result of all the research, the project “The Grand Budapest Hotel: Dollhouse Experience” emerged. A small-scale urban project, which describes in a different vocabulary the idiosyncratic aesthetics of director Wes Anderson.

The choice of the topic of this dissertation started very simply.

Through the research that followed and with the contribution of my supervising teacher, a magical journey emerged in the field of idiosyncratic directing and the imagination of a very special director. In fact, it is no longer possible for me to watch Wes Anderson movies in the same way.

The purpose of “The Grand Budapest Hotel: Dollhouse Experience” is, initially, to highlight the unique techniques of Wes Anderson through the example of “The Grand Budapest Hotel” film, and to interpret them with architectural vocabulary.

The Görlitzer department store is one of the best-preserved department stores since the early 20th century. It is built in Art Nouveau style, specifically Jugendstil. (Img. 52,53)

In 1717 a hotel was located on the site. At the initiative of the city council, however, it was demolished in favor of the department store. The new construction started as a steel frame that received a facade entirely based on the desired model of Art Nouveau and was completed within 9 months, in 1913.

As a result of the film's focus, a private investor bought the demolished building in 2013 and is now restoring it for reuse. The reopening has not been planned yet, as a major restoration and renovation was deemed necessary first.x

The preservable department store (Img. 55) is mainly surrounded by the newer shopping center City-Center Frauentor (Img. 56), one of the few new buildings in the historic area, the Marienplatz square (Img. 57), the Gothic Gospel Church of our Lady (Img. 60), the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History (Img. 59) and the Thick Tower (Dicker Turm) (Img. 58).

There are also many Wilhelminian style buildings in the area, while vegetation does not appear strongly within a small radius of the department store. Its main facade, however, looks at a key point of the traffic network of the area, placing the building in the immediate attention of the public. (Img. 61,62) All facades of Gorlitzer Warenhaus are accessible by cars and pedestrians via cobbled streets. On the east side, however, the view is less impressive and covered with newer structures for storage and other modern practical functions. This is the façade that communicates with the modern shopping center, where most of the operation took place. (Img. 63)

With this in mind, 2 bold intervention moves emerged: First, the construction of the facade of the Grand Budapest hotel in realistic dimensions, parallel to the facade of the department store, and secondly, the division of the shopping center into two volumes (Img. 65), with the opening of an atrium between the engravings shown in red in the diagram (Img. 64).

Thus, the experience of the grandeur that Wes Anderson's creation exudes through lifelong contact and observation has become a central idea. The intermediate volume mainly concerns this part and takes the role of an observatory. By stripping its face of additional elements and walls, the structure of the skeleton is revealed to reshape the circulation inside. (Img. 66) The new patio is formed into a public space with main access from the observatory tower. This square will host additions

related to the Grand Budapest experience, but will also act as a valley in the gap created by the division of the building. (Img. 67) Above the square, the transverse layout of the roof is preserved, in the form of a connecting bridge. Thus, the observatory maintains its communication with the larger volume, which, for the most part, retains its original function. (Img. 68) From the engravings of the roof emerges the last section that operates in addition to the observatory. This narrow strip, with equal extension to its vertical axis, will house the additional function of the observatory, an exhibition space. (Img. 69) Two more installations, taken from the film, will be erected in the area of the square, to serve both exhibitally and functionally the overall structure. The word for the Grand Budapest hotel funicular (Img. 70) and the cable car (Img. 71), originally leading to the monastery, which are located in the square, are distinct from the street and replace the elevators and stairwells in the vertical movement of the exhibition space.

Apart from the stage-exhibits, the overall structure adopts a minimalist and perhaps a bit brutalist form, wanting to avoid the addition of different, foreign to the original, details. Thus, the existing commercial building now functions for exhibits such as the green screen for Anderson’s models. (Img. 72)

The square is the unifying element, as well as a point of relaxation and transition. In other words, here the visitors find themselves between reality and fairy tale.

Of course, the Gorlitzer Warenhaus department store cannot be omitted from the program. As the mall has shrunk in size, the department store will have to operate in addition to it. That is why its atrium will be excluded from the trade, constructionally, in the same way that it was separated from the supposed hotel rooms in the film. Therefore, it can now be used as an exhibition space, but mainly, as an exhibit space. (Img. 73)

Through the sidewalk the visitor passes in front of the fairytale setting and then is led to the reception of the exhibition space.

From there he heads towards the square, always having the facade of the Grand Budapest in his field of vision. Then he joins the fairy tale by entering the main exhibition and follows the predetermined path that is marked on the floor. (Img. 79-81) The movie basically starts and the visitor starts going up, down and up again, according to the adventure. But before the movie ends, time stops in the lobby of the 1930 Grand Budapest. From there, the visitor crosses the bridge and is again in front of the impressive hotel façade through the observatory. (Img. 82-85) The descent from the top floor is slow, allowing the visitor to cling for a few more minutes in front of the dream spectacle. The tower with the atrium is open to the façade, to encourage this feeling, and the staircase is in the center, so that it is not preferred from the beginning, in relation to the façade corridor. Τα props της ταινίας είναι αυτά που εκτίθενται στις θεματικές αίθουσες… Ο πίνακας "Boy with apple", οι γραπτές επιστολές και σημειώματα, τα κοστούμια και ένα σωρό άλλα… (Εικ. 94-96) Αυτό, όμως, που υιοθετήθηκε από την τεχνική του Anderson, είναι η τακτική όπου οι λειτουργίες του παρασκηνίου έρχονται στο προσκήνιο και επισημαίνονται, σε αυτή την περίπτωση, με τις διαστάσεις τους. Αυτό είναι μάλιστα που θα τραβήξει και την προσοχή των περαστικών. Μία σύγχρονη γιγαντιαία μεταλλική κατασκευή, διακριτή πίσω από δύο κτίρια εντελώς διαφορετικής εποχής… Μία φλοίδα προσόψεως ασύμβατης με την περιοχή… Ένα τελεφερίκ και ένα βαγόνι τρένου που ανηφορίζει μια τεχνητή βουνό πλαγιά… (Εικ.

The props of the film are the ones on display in the theme rooms…

The "Boy with apple" board, the written letters and notes, the costumes and a lot more… (Img. 94-96) What has been adopted by Anderson's technique, however, is the tactic where background functions come to the foreground and, in this case, are denoted by their dimensions. This is what will catch the attention of passers-by.

A modern giant metal structure, distinct behind two buildings of completely different eras… A facade shell incompatible with the area… A cable car and a train car that goes up an artificial mountain slope… (Img. 97-98) …the same elements that Anderson showed in the movie in the form of a model.
