Design Exploration

Birmingham is at the heart of a huge change - staring into a 21st Century Great Restructuring. However, most of the city remains untouched as the public to disregard the idea of updating the historical features of the city. The major city is known as the ‘first manufacturing town in the world’ and was hailed as the ‘city of a Thousand Trades’ in 1889; this was due to many businesses choosing to base themselves in the area.

In addition to this, Birmingham is also famous for being home to the network of canals, many are now lined with trendy bars and cafes; plus, located in the city centre, the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery known for pre-Raphaelite masterpieces.

Located south to the city, Alcester road sits between the arterial route between Moseley and Balsall Health, which offers a cross section of the diversity of Birmingham life. Most development to take place on Alcester road has happened during the latter part of the 19th century, which included the expansion of Birmingham across agricultural land towards Moseley village. Balsall health was an affluent area for the Victorian population at the time. during this period, many grand Victorian civic buildings such as a library, swimming baths and college of art which is adjacent to the Victorian villas and terraced housing. However, many of these buildings are left either derelict or abandoned meaning some have been left with decay and lack of maintenance.

Areas that lack maintenance and therefore appear ‘run down’ tend to attract criminal activity. One of the factors regarding the decline in the areas fortune was a result of poor-quality housing. Residents and the local authority have started to take action to improve the site as they aim to make it a vibrant community once again.

Furthermore, Alcester road consists of various faith organisations and multiple independent local prayers such as St Paul’s Community Development Trust, Ort Gallery and The Old Print Works creative hub. It is also home to several environmental organisations and a Zero Carbon House.

Interesting facts of the Alcester Road include: the measurement of the street measures approximately 1,755 metres long. Secondly, the average house in Alcester Road sells for £311,238.44 and lastly, the average elevation of Alcester Road is roughly 147.88 metres above sea level. with the highest point being 159.70 and the lowest point being 132.90. A change of 26.80 metres.

old tram deport 582 Mosley Road, Balsall Health, Birmingham, B12 9AA The Grade II listed property was built in the year of 1906. The building was in use during the years 1908-1947 and was sold in 2004. Unfortunately, the property is still abandoned. Although it is unclear as to when work had taken place on the property, it appears that the building has since had mid c20 alterations, possibly by FB Osborn who designed the Office Range, the adjacent building.

The old tram depo was built with red brick with ashlar dressings and welsh slate roods with clerestories in an baroque revival style.

As shown on the historical maps above, the former Old Tram Depo was built in 1906. The building was in use between the years 1908-1947. Although the building was sold in 2004, there has been no further development to it meaning.

As shown in the photos above, the brick on site was originally covered by paper which laid on top of glazed brick. The building contained different types of brick- coated brick, glazed brick, fired brick and baked brick.

The final experiement - a series of photographs are shown below taken at one minute intervals of the experimenet.

Testing durability, decomposition and porosity. The diagrams are set into three sections: looking at the cubes form (from the front/ side elevation), top-view and exploring the water spilage.

In order to test the durability of brick and the process of deterioration I needed to construct multiple experiments.

The first experiment (as sown on the right) I constructed involved foam blocks and clay in small arrangements which represented brick walls. During this experiment, the process of deterioration was challenged by an external interference of syrup being purposely poured onto the forms made for this practical.

Although, this experiment explored the durability of the material used, it didn’t necessarily help with the understanding of the process of deterioration within how it effects brick surfaces.

This experiment needed improvement! Rules had to be set and followed.

Whilst the variables changed in the following experiments, the ideology of what I was tested did not.

For instance, for the next three experiments, I used an ice cube tray which contained the mixture of clay powder and water. The ice cubes were put into the freezer for a certain amount hour (this was kept the same- in order to make it a fair test). Once the ice cubes had frozen, I had then placed each ice cube one by one and recorded the time in which it took for the cube to melt. A series of photographs were taken at one minute intervals of the experiment. Testing durability, decomposition and porosity. This experiment was very interesting as I was unaware of what was going to be left after the cube had melted. This experiment was successful; I then repeated this process a further two times in order to collect as much data as I could.

From this experiment, I have learnt that by adding additional substances, the mix of the creation can change due to external pressures.

Decomposed bricks on site

After conducting my experiments and taking influence from the precedent studies explored, I re-explored my chosen site but this time merging the ideas of deterioration, durability, porosity and the “grid” in order to help create my field diagrams.

When making my field diagrams I decided to take three approaches, firstly: a single point perspective that connects the inner and wider points together. Secondly, connecting the decomposed bricks on site. Lastly, looking at the same points but in a more zoomed in viewpoint.

The following page consists of two field diagrams which link all possible decomposed bricks on the surrounding area of site.

For my form finding exercise, I decided to take influence from my experiment where I looked at the process of decomposition through the act of melting, where it was found that the core remained resistant. In addition I am connecting the points taken from the field diagram where existing decomposed bricks situated.

The purple dots scattered across the map represent where current decomposed bricks are located around and on site.

Site Strategy The new site will offer more communal and sustainably friendlier routes for local residents to travel to the site. This will include public transport links such as bus routes and train lines.

In addition, bike routes will be added to the scheme in order to encourage local residents to travel on foot or via bike to and around site. The light grey paths are where possible bike routes will be located.

The surrounding area has multiple parks and green space in which residents and visitors can walk to.

The location of the decomposed bricks on site was extremely important when thinking about the design of the building. For instance, the location of the bricks helped form my field diagram which then influenced my final form design decisions. In addition to this, the suns path and wind direction around site are important as it will effect the heat exposure on the mesh cladding, which sits at the top of the proposed building.

My concept word for Design resolution started by exploring the word ‘deterioration’ where I looked at the physical connotations in which the word carries, this was shown through the experiment of melting ice cubes to test the durability and process of deterioration. Moving forward, the term ‘resilience’ became more interesting. From the experiment, I learnt that the core remained resistant to external pressures which meant it held resilience.

When thinking about how this idea of resilience implementing on society, it made me think of social diversity and topics relating to racism. Therefore, the theme going forward in this project if racial resilience.

Words that relate to racial resilience are poverty, systematic racism, racial identity, tolerance, social education, discrimination, ignorance, inclusion, power, strengthen, unity, Justice, and disconnection.

When researching this topic area, I found that looking at speech/ poetry and movies such as Selma, 12 years as a slave and Remember the titans helped deliver the experiences that some have endured over the years. Key quotations that I found most interesting are listed as follows:

Racism can be concurred through the power of education.

Providing relevant spaces in which the diverse community can share knowledge and experiences of where they have suffered from systematic racism, thus expresses acts of resilience. This indicates that the community is not afraid to speak out. My project is about resilience through education; mainly focusing on BAME individuals from the local community, who have experienced racism throughout the 20th and 21st Century.

In particular I will be focusing on ethnic minorities who live in the surrounding area (site - Moseley and Balsall Heath, Alcester Road). Birmingham can be considered more ethnically diverse than the UK average. as shown in figures 2-4. According to the 2011 Census, as a whole the UK claims itself as Approximately 86% white, whereas residents of the Moseley area being 66% so (figure 5).

Birmingham is more diverse than ever, with ethnic minority population rising by nearly 95,000 in 6 years = analysis of Office for National Statistics data says: one in 3.1 people in the area were black/Asian or from another ethnic minority background (figure one). In 2017- 829,822 people in Birmingham were from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Birmingham's ethnic diversity is greater than the national average Moseley, Birmingham - suburban ward located in south of the city. As shown in the figures to the right, the area has a slightly older age profile than the city as a whole and a large share of the population are from a BAME background [Black, Asian, and other ethnic minorities].

Dresden’s Military History Museum / Studio Libeskind

“I wanted to create a bold interruption, a fundamental dislocation, to penetrate the historic arsenal …” – Daniel Libeskind, 2011. Both the Jewish Museum and the Military History Museum are seen to express an aggressive avant-garde design and pre-modernist structures. Both demand a renewed emotional and intellectual focus on history.

The glass façade, consisting in part of curved panels, some of them carved open, transforms the new building, perched on top of the old one, into a gigantic, iridescent crystal, whose appearance keeps changing as it catches the reflections of the sky, the water and the cityinfluencing my decision of mesh cladding roof.

Studio Libeskind – Jewish Museum

Lighting Precedent Preservation the existing frame structure of the building. CaixaForum Influenced my decision to have a mesh-like cladding sitting on-top on building acting as a wrap feature. Poche floors/ levels.

D.E. SHAW & CO. OFFICES - Phenomena of spatial colour

Within my project, I am interested in exploring light and building porosity. Relevant precedents include: the experimental project, where D.E. SHAW & CO. OFFICES were exploring the phenomena of spatial colour reflection/ “projected colour”. The intervals of instruments were used to help design the interior space of the building.

A possible idea to take forward into my project is the use of time in reflection to the variable you are working with. For instance, the idea of gaps/ wholes in the walls adds to the ideology of deterioration; whereas the structure remains resistance to external pressures. Appropriate cuts/voids can be created from using the field diagram.

Form, Structure and experience Precedent Studio Libeskind – Jewish Museum, in Berlin. This museum exhibits social, political and cultural history of Jews in Germany. Libeskind’s interests when designing this museum was to focus on specific areas such as sections exploring the past and the future of the Jewish community. Inside the building, sits a void which cuts through the zigzagging plan of new building and creates a space that embraces absence.

This building is very thought provoking. It has influenced me to think about buildings or spaces that connect to emotional impacts/ situations that have happened. I am interested at exploring more into buildings that relate to emotional/ social deterioration. An example of this would be the Twin-Tower memorial.

Memory and Tolerance Museum (Museo Memoria y Tolerancia)

Manuel Herz Architects of Basel have designed this Centre for the Jewish Community in Mainz, Germany covered in glazed, green ceramic tiles. The shape of the building is abstractly based on the Hebrew word for blessing and is curved around a public courtyard.

The museum opened in 2010 to focus in the consequences of indifference, discrimination and violence. Through historical memory the rooms display a tour of the worst crimes committed by humanity against humanity because of religious, ethnic or other form of intolerance. The museum seeks to be a channel of expression for understanding cultural diversity and a step towards eradicating hatred and genocide.

The interior walls of the synagogue are covered in densely packed Hebrew letters, in some areas arranged into poetry by 10th century rabbis.

Taking influence from the precedent studies mentioned which have incorporated emotive spaces within architecture, I’ve decided to include art pieces of similar context in order to portray the idea of having emotive spaces throughout the building, not just created from the buildings structure but also what sits within it. The below images show similar art pieces of what kind of images will be shown within the assembly hall.

The museum is divided into two sections: Memory and Tolerance. The Tolerance section addresses issues such as dialogue, discrimination, human rights, the power of the media and the richness of diversity, among others. There are temporary exhibitions such as We will not be silent! The battles for freedom of expression, where the case of Mexico, which is one of the most dangerous countries for journalists, is addressed.

Section helped influence the idea of having different heights and ceiling heights instead of adapting the floor levels or incline.

Taking influence from from the ice expierment and field diagram, I decided to create spaces which reflected the results found. For instance, the process of decomposition as shown through the act of melting, high ceilings but low walls. This could also be represented by having obscure angled walls. One idea that could be explored is having the auditoruim sitting at the top of building in order to show solidary and resilience as a symbol of the end conclusion found from the experiemenet - ‘The core remained resistant’.

When developing the arrangements of spaces inside the assembly hall I decided to take the bubble diagram arrangements and the field diagram from the design exploration portfolio and combine both together which helped find the correct sizes and forms for the spaces.

Following research found and the exploration of various precedent studies, I have decided to Incorporate the idea of having emotive spaces throughout the journey of the building; as a result the visitor will feel the whole experience as they travel around the spaces. This will be created by the use of architecture and other forms of art; such as speech, painting, lighting and documented expression. Appropriate spaces where the idea of “educate, reflect and express” will be present.

In order to incorporate the idea of poché into my architectural plans and sections, I added void spaces where possible pipes and ventilation/ air flow would exist in the buildings structure.

When further developing the design of the assembly hall, I took the field diagrams function of operating as a primary base for creating the floor plans and instead decided to explore the idea of incorporating it into the design of the sections, as it included points where the decomposed brick existed. This decision resulted in the building having slanted floors with inclination whilst having various ceiling heights; this added to the idea of the spaces and rooms getting bigger as you travelled through the building, thus creating emotive spaces as the rooms would start of being very tight as you enter and then get bigger as you travel though it.

The reason for this was to achieve my aim of having emotive spaces; emotions such as isolation, oppression and inclusion would be felt as you entered the space but when leaving you would feel empowered- these emotions are connotations of feelings in which people who have experienced racism have felt, relating back to the idea of resilience and racial resilience- the purpose of the building.

The Design

Ground Floor The ground floor acts as the main foyer space including a cafe and reading room alongside private back-house areas for staff.

Areas in which I’ve decided to keep aspects of the existing brick wall is highlighted on the floor plans in a dark grey shade in order to help distinguish the difference between the new structure and the existing. Shaded areas are shown in the plans in order to represent void spaces where ventilation and air/flow will travel through the building; thus adding to the idea of poche architecture.

First Floor The first floor is where the main concept of “educate, reflect and express” takes place. For instance the public first enter the first gallery room where they will see pieces of art that express views and experiences of racism. The art pieces displayed may have been created by fellow residents, as this is part of the scheme, or external artists. The public will then travel to the movie room which acts as a reflection space. Spaces in which people can express their thoughts would take place in both workshops on this floor and in the auditorium on second floor. As you travel through the space, the rooms get bigger- ceilings get taller and floors become flatter compared to the uneven slopes as you enter the first gallery space. This is in order to make the viewer feel a certain emotion of uneasiness so that the emotions of racism can come through- this space was mostly influenced by the Jewish Museum, Libeskind by using architecture to help express emotions.

As mentioned previously under the development section- LED lights have been added to design in order to add atmosphere in order to help create emotive spaces. A key precedent which helped influence this idea is The Design Museum in London

Taking influence from Peter Zumthor, i decided to create a parti diagram showing the sizing of spaces on the first floor where my scheme of ‘educate, reflect and express’ is represented through appropriate rooms such as a movie, gallery and workshop space.

Second Floor

The third floor is entered by the public through the step ramp located on the top left area. These stairs can only be accessed from the second workshop space on the first floor, this is in order to continue the idea of having a one way system for the assembly space in order to make the journey through the building an experience in order for the view to feel all the appropriate emotions as they educate themselves on this subject matter. The auditorium is the last acting space thats aim is to ‘educate’ the public as its a room to ‘express’ thoughts and emotions on this matter. The public would then exit via the main circulation area located in the centre of the building going all the way up.

Third Floor The third floor is a private space as it can only accessed by the residents. This floor contains three living arrangements and one workshop where residents can create pieces to be displayed in the gallery downstairs. The housing arrangements have developed, i decided to follow similar lines of the field diagram in order to create these spaces; each apartment is designed slightly differently.

Fifth Floor The fifth floor is the top of the building which accommodates only two lodgings but houses a large workshop space for residences to use and ‘express’.

When designing the buildings, I needed to take a number of things into consideration; for instance, what happens to the rainwater? How will the suns rays effect the temperature inside? Will there be too much sun exposure?

To resolve these issues I decided to incorporate the use of poche planning, where pipes are weaved through the buildings structure. The exterior design of the building is therefore not effected as these pipes run internally. Figure A shows the external finish of the cladding which sits in front of the drain pipes which collect the rain water and cycles grey-water from the surrounding vegetation. Figure B represents part of the building in which consists of poche planning where ventilation is travelled through the various ceiling heights.

The external precast concrete columns were influenced by Libeskind’s Jewish Museum. The idea behind it is to represent forms which demonstrate resilience and solidarity in addition to reflection on how parts of the building still exists. For instance, some of the concrete columns are broken - this is to show the experiences of society and racial resilience which was previously represented through the ice experiment. In addition to this, in the background you can also see the auditorium which sits at the top of the assembly hall which was one of my initial design ideas. Taking my site strategy further, I decided to incorporate an external bike rack that the public can access ans a means of travelling to and around site.

The Element

For the element study I decided to explore the junction of where the new concrete walls meet the existing brick wall as one of my projects initial aims was to preserve most of the existing frame. I also found that the way in which the new wall hits the existing wall extremely interesting. The below image shows the highlighted area in which this junction exists.

Another reason as to why I chose to explore the area of where the existing brick wall hits the new concrete wall is due to its angle. The 17 degrees angled concrete wall creates a certain feeling in which one would endure when entering the space. When entering this part of the building, the visitor may feel slightly uneasy as it starts off very tight but then the space gets bigger as you travel though. The reason behind this was to continue the idea of creating emotive spaces through the use of architectural language; this was inspired by various precedent studies such as the Tolerance museum and Libeskind Jewish Museum.

I believe that my proposed design does answer and achieve the aims of my thesis.

A mission was set out to create powerful, emotive spaces that have been influenced by amazing architectural designs such as The Jewish Museum, by Libeskind and the Tolerance Museum (as mentioned in the precedents subsection). The geometry formed from the field diagram helped set out the room layouts in addition to the sections; where ceilings and room heights had been cut or added in order to create such atmospheric architecture. All in which added to the idea of poche plans; voids/ ventilation pockets were added in order to accommodate poche into the scheme.

Following the initial ice experiment, the decision to have the auditorium located at the top of the assembly space was most powerful as it foregrounded the idea of Resilience! The space sits strong as the large cantilever spikes out of the building, hanging over the side. This relates to the idea of the experiment finding - ‘the core remained resilient to external pressures.’

Another initial scheme of this project was to create a journey/ experience which helped the visitor to educate themselves on the subject matter of racial resilience through arts focusing on systematic racism. Whether that be done by various workshops, gallery spaces looking at art work or listening to oral history in relevant documentaries or films and even listening to peoples experiences. I wanted to create this! It is especially evident on the first floor of my scheme where such places, as mentioned, are situations. This is in order to achieve my aim of ‘educate, reflect and express’.
