RESEARCH: making

This project explored how a design can

Space def ining furniture

be better realised through the process of making physical prototypes, beyond what a

could

design

including

through

and

construction details). Based within the refugee resettlement initiative, the design of this research project relates to a piece of modular furniture

which

facilitates

several

different program typologies all within the same sized module. The flexible furniture element needed to adapt to a wide range of uses, be affordable, resilient and easy to construct as a way to further up-skill inhabitants. To complete the f irst draft prototype, full scale pieces of timber were used (30x30mm) although a shortening of members was enacted. Although not fully reflecting the true weight of a f inal design, this allowed for the creation of 1:1 scaled joints and proper tactility.
