Wayne Thiebaud: Selected Paintings and Work on Paper

Selected Paintings and Work on Paper

Foreword

It was my first day on the job 25 years ago when Paul LeBaron Thiebaud introduced me to his father, Wayne Thiebaud. Dressed casually in khaki pants with hand-rolled cuffs, a canary yellow collared shirt peaking out of a white sleeveless V-neck sweater and a pair of well-worn Stan Smith tennis shoes, Wayne offered a warm smile and a welcoming handshake. Insistent that I call him by his given name, and at that time I thought it to be much too informal, it quickly became second nature.

Working with Wayne on a daily basis led to an incredible education in his unfaltering work ethic and his exceptional ability to experiment within his own work, which did not wane even when he attained the seasoned age of 101 years. Ardently investigating traditional constructs, Wayne added his own notable imprint in art history with the impressive and sometimes unexpected utilization of various media and subject matter as can be seen in this exhibition.

In organizing this joyous show, it is my hope that viewers are inspired to create an ongoing dialogue with these wonderous works of art. As a painter and teacher, Wayne encouraged his peers and students to consistently transcend limitations, and he unquestionably succeeded in setting the bar.

There are numerous components in mounting such an exhibition and I give thanks to John Yau for writing an insightful essay about seeing the pleasure in what may appear to be simple everyday objects. Thank you to Jonathan Novak Contemporary Art and William Shearburn Gallery for their generous participation, and also to the private lenders.

Certainly, this exhibition and catalogue could not have been possible without the collaborative effort of Greg Flood, Matthew Miller and Gregory Hemming, and I am sincerely grateful for their dedication and diligence.

Wayne Thiebaud’s Pleasure Principle

Wayne Thiebaud’s deepest ambition was to reinvent generic subjects, such as the still-life, landscape and cityscape, at a time when many artists had either jettisoned subject matter in favor of abstraction or still worked within the established conventions of representational painting. Situating himself within the realm of imaginative realism–which Thiebaud practically invented– he turned the ordinary, often mundane things and views we see in our everyday life into something magical. It is as if we have never seen a cupcake or pond before. He achieved this remarkable understanding of the world by pushing formal devices, such as perspective, cropping, the angle of the view, as well as color, into a new territory that was all his own. This territory merged representation and abstraction so smoothly that many viewers did not recognize Thiebaud’s use of geometric shapes, such as triangles, circles, and ellipses as the basis of his compositions. Although Thiebaud was included in the historic show, International Exhibition of New Realists, at Sidney Janis Gallery (October 31-December 1, 1962), which included Robert Indiana, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol, and was initially thought of as a Pop artist, it was quickly evident that he was going in a very different direction.

In this exhibition of 18 works that Thiebaud made between 1964-2016 a span of fifty years, we see him confidently working in different materials and mediums. The etching Bacon & Eggs is a graphic, black-and-white depiction of a classic American diner breakfast: two sunny side up eggs, three strips of crisp bacon, coffee, a glass of water, two slices of bread topped by two squares of butter. Measuring a modest 5 x 6 inches and printed in an edition of 100, Bacon & Eggs was part of a series of etchings of different foodstuffs Thiebaud titled Delights. Shortly after Bacon & Eggs was printed, Thiebaud painted over one of his artist’s proofs in watercolor. Essentially, he preserved the image while imbuing it with color. A restless artist who loved to work, Thiebaud would do it again when he drew in pastel over his drypoint etching, Apartment Hill (1986).

Thiebaud loved to draw. It is the foundation his work, which he seamlessly connected to his imagination. Apartment Hill is a fanciful view of a modern glass building built on the peak of a sharply angled hill, with a multilane expressway seen below, curving around on the mountain’s right side, and not emerging, leaving viewers wondering where it went. On the other side, a road rises up the steep hill, like a waterfall in reverse. For all of its fancifulness, Thiebaud’s view can also be

read as a commentary on mankind’s hubris, and the belief that we can control nature. A longtime resident of northern California, he was conscious of the different ways society interacts with nature, from building houses on cliffs to diverting and controlling the flow of water for farming. In the painting, Irrigation Pond, Thiebaud uses a palette dominated by different blues, greens, violets, yellows, and browns to depict the pond’s oddly shaped rectangle. While Irrigation Pond is also fanciful, there is also a feeling of reverence. He is honoring the ingenuity of humans to collect water in a lake surrounded by planted rows of vegetables. This is what makes Thiebaud’s paintings hold our interest. For all of its visual immediacy, Thiebaud’s paintings remain open-ended, even when he is painting a still life.

In his print, Black and White Suckers (1971), Thiebaud decorates the surface of each of the suckers differently. We see eight suckers, five of which are complete. The other three are cropped by the print’s edges, suggesting that there are many more suckers that we cannot see. In contrast to Warhol, who underscored similarity in his silkscreen painting, Green Coca-Cola Bottles (1962), Thiebaud conveys a different vision; each lollipop is distinct. His mastery of aquatint and etching even makes the blacks and grays look tasty. His lithograph of nine Meringues (a.k.a. Cut Pies) (1964) can be read as Minimalist sculptures resting on low circular pedestals or nine wedges of fluffy meringue pies, hard or soft objects. That ambiguity opens Thiebaud’s work up, invites viewers to speculate on their meaning. What is Thiebaud’s plenitude about? Is it purely benign, a celebration of America? What does it mean to see rows and rows of sticky, abundantly sweet desserts in Pies & Cakes (2005)? Thiebaud’s desserts exude an ambiguity that resists any reductive reading of them. He may not have transformed his pies, suckers, donuts, and cupcakes, but if we read them literally, we miss the pleasure they give us, and their power to make us see the world differently.

John Yau is an American poet and critic who lives in New York City. He received his B.A. from Bard College in 1972 and his M.F.A. from Brooklyn College in 1978. He has published over 50 books of poetry, artists’ books, fiction, and art criticism.

A Few Notes on Thiebaud

When Wayne Thiebaud’s paintings were first shown at Allen Stone Gallery in 1962, they were heralded as the West Coast response to the Pop Art movement that had emerged in New York in the late 1950s. While Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg came to Pop through assemblage, and collage, and Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and James Rosenquist came to it through screen printing, photography, and airbrush, Thiebaud’s works were none of those things. They were oil paintings with surface, tooth, and very much rooted in the tradition of studio painting that stretched back centuries in Europe.

The strongest argument for their association with the movement was their subject matter – rows of cakes, pies, suckers, and the other glossy, manufactured foods that epitomized the culinary offerings consumed by mid-twentieth century working- and middle-class America. But their execution, with the perspective providing visual depth even though it was tilted at a steep angle, was the complete opposite of the quest for flatness in painting that was then in vogue. His paintings also did not neatly fit into the then important search for an original painting style that would advance modern art beyond Abstract Expressionism.

While this exhibition includes paintings among its selection of offerings, the works on paper being presented allow viewers to focus in on Thiebaud’s skill as a draughtsman. His use of line to convey shape, form, and contour is exacting, deft, and precise. There is not one errant mark in any of these pieces. This owes no small debt to his early training in commercial art at the Wiggins Trade School in Los Angeles in the 1930s and a brief stint working for Walt Disney Studios at the age of 16. Pairing his elegant precision with the use of simple geometries to create the outlines of triangular pie slices, the broad rectangular sides of apartment buildings, and the circular features of Mickey Mouse frosted onto the top surface of a cake yields a clarity to Thiebaud’s expression of subject matter. The resonance of Thiebaud’s line work cannot be missed once noticed, and it has associations with not only the old masters of European art, but also the wood block printers of Tokugawa Japan and the sumi-i ink landscape painters of China’s Song Dynasty, cultures whose art Thiebaud studied and greatly appreciated.

“A line is a dot that went for a walk” according to Paul Klee. In the case of Wayne Thiebaud, it danced across the surface of the canvas and page, using the nuances of its steps to form each of Thiebaud’s works. There is also a saying that ‘within seriousness there is little room for play, but within play there is tremendous room for seriousness.’ To this the artist Carrie Mae Weems appended “It is really through the act of serious play that wonderful ideas are born.”1 I cannot think of a better way to describe what I see when standing before one of Thiebaud’s works.
