Wakefield Good Neighbours is currently seeking volunteers to help older people in local communities throughout the Wakefield district.

You can help us to support older vulnerable people who are isolated and lonely by providing friendly social contact for a minimum of one hour per week. This can be to offer practical support such as collecting a prescription, assisting with shopping, helping someone to maintain or start a hobby or simply popping in for a chat and a coffee.

You will be offered training, expenses, the chance to gain skills and experience and the knowledge that you are doing something rewarding.

Would you like to have fun, meet new people & do something worthwhile at the same time? The local fundraising volunteers in Wakefield are looking for an Organiser and a Trading Secretary to help run their group.

Grow Your Own in May

I’ve come across quite a few good ‘top tips’ this month so I’ll begin by passing some of them on to you. Bob Flowerdew had a couple of good ideas on Gardener’s Question Time last month. The first was to add grass clippings to the bottom of the trench when you’re planting potatoes. He claimed to have a much higher yield this way. You may still have some main crop to plant so why not give it a go? I’ve done half mine with grass and half without – an unscientific trial! His second tip was to fill a few watering cans and leave them in the greenhouse to warm up before using the water on seedlings. I normally leave one in there and it is noticeably warmer – I imagine it’s less of a shock to newly emerging seedlings than cold direct from the tap.

My top tip for this year is how to ensure a carrot root fly free crop. After years of carrots riddled with little tunnels, I tried two deterrent methods last year. I’m not sure which one was responsible for my marvellous crop so I’ll be using both again this year. The first was to plant a chive plant in each corner of the bed. The second was to erect canes at 1 metre intervals around the bed and then run a wall of fleece around the whole, attaching the fleece to the top of each cane with wire and weighting the bottom down with bricks. It looks a bit Heath Robinson, well mine does as all the canes are differing heights, but if it does the trick …

There’s lots to harvest in May including asparagus. I’m waiting for my first crop this year. I planted the crowns a couple of years ago but, to encourage the plants to thrive, have had to wait till now before harvesting any spears. I’m hoping for lots of healthy, tender spears but have just been reading about how to combat thin, spindly ones. If this is the case with yours then the advice is that thin spindly spears are female ones and should be pruned out before they flower and produce seed.
