Taylor Sheldrakes Friends For Candlelighters Taylor Sheldrake was born on the 12th of July 2001 she was a beautiful little girl inside and out. Whilst growing up Taylor had lots of lovely family holidays at home and abroad. She also had her own pony Pudding who is still with us today. Taylor loved all animals including her 5 dogs. She attended Jerry Clay Lane School and had lots of friends there.

Taylor was diagnosed with Leukaemia on the 2nd of October 2010. Whilst undergoing treatment Taylor sadly lost all her hair and had some really really bad days it was worst for her when she was on steroids. On one of her stays in hospital which she had quite a few Taylor told me that when she was better she wanted to raise a lot of money for Candlelighters the brilliant charity which supports all families with children with cancer.

Sadly Taylor lost her fight for life the day before her 10th birthday on 11th July 2011.

Since Taylor passed away we started a charity in her honour Taylor Sheldrakes Friends for Candlelighters and we have raised lots of money for children with cancer ever since.

Grow Your Own in July

I’ve found a few interesting July facts to lead into this month’s veggie tips: Before being renamed after Julius Caesar, July was known as Quintilis, meaning fifth as it was the fifth month in the old calendar. Also, until the 18th century the stress was placed on the first syllable making it rhyme with duly or truly. And now on to the lovely long list of veg to harvest… early potatoes, beetroots, chillies, courgettes, fennel, French beans, broadbeans, garlic, broccoli, carrots, onions, peas, radish, turnips, tomatoes… Every week I bring home my veg, wash them (so they’re looking their best), arrange them attractively on the draining board and take a photo to share with my long suffering Facebook friends. Often the photos are a bit sparse and embarrassing - but not in July! A beautiful cornucopia!

All this harvesting will probably take up quite a bit of your time: picking, washing, prepping, (photographing), maybe freezing or pickling. In addition to the veg, plenty of fruit are ready for picking now too. Currants, red, black and white (the sweetest of all) take no looking after all year and produce an abundant crop which freeze really well. Just lay them out on a baking tray covered in greaseproof paper and pop in the freezer. Once frozen you can pop them in a tub (if you do this straight away they’ll all freeze into one big lump). They’ll last all year in the freezer. I put some on my porridge every morning straight from the freezer as the hot porridge defrosts them. I’ve run out at the minute and am buying blueberries: not nearly as tasty and really expensive!

I was also given a couple of jostaberry plants a few years ago. They’re a cross between a gooseberry and a blackcurrant but minus the thorns. They’ve grown into 3 magnificent bushes with beautiful large, as yet unripe berries on them. I’ve yet to eat any though as they seem to be a favourite of the birds who get to the plot much earlier than I! Last month, I advised using a sprinkler for watering while you carry out other tasks. Well, I’m going to revise that this month. I lost lots of my strawberry plants last year and I’ve just read that they should be watered only from the base as watering from above can rot the crown. This could well be what I’ve done. Apparently raspberries too should only be watered from above as water on the fruit and foliage can lead to mildew.
