About Us Sean spent time on the works experience scheme from North Cumbria Technology College, known colloquially as ‘Harraby Secondary’, whilst aged fifteen years old at two different funeral directing firms in the city. This experience confirmed in Sean’s own mind that the career path he would passionately pursue would be that of a Funeral Director.

Upon leaving school in the summer of 2002 whilst aged sixteen years, Sean landed his first job in the funeral profession as a Funeral Service Operative/Coffin Hand. During this time, along with his usual duties of preparing coffins and people’s loved ones for viewing and washing vehicles, Sean would accompany the Funeral Directors on their appointments and soon learned the more complex aspects of arranging a funeral.

Meet the Staff Sean Crilley

As a youngster, due to a family bereavement, Sean decided at the tender age of twelve years old that a life in service to the bereaved families and their loved ones of Carlisle was what he would dedicate his life to.

At seventeen and a half years old Sean became a Funeral Director proper, the youngest ever in the City of Carlisle. Fast forward a few years and at the age of 31, Sean, having become disillusioned with the seemingly constant taking over of some of the cities established independent firms by a national conglomerate firm he decided to open his own funeral parlour.

Sean said; “Over the years, I have gained an intimate knowledge of my hometown of Carlisle and its residents.

I feel the time is right to offer my own small, independent, personal and caring funeral service so I can continue to serve my local community in a role I see not just as a job but as a vocation”.

My name is Jason, I am from the Midlands originally but moved to Carlisle almost twenty years ago with my wife Kerry.

We have eleven year old twins, Ethan and Lily who have recently started secondary school. The twins take up most of my spare time with boxing, climbing and camping, but it keeps me active.

Kerry works at Ullswater School in Penrith where she has been for many years.

Before reaching my goal to become a Funeral Director, I worked on behalf of H.M. Coroner covering the whole of Cumbria and although this was difficult at times it only solidified my resolve to become a Funeral Director.

In 2011 I had my opportunity being offered a role as a Funeral Director at a firm in the city. When asked why I wanted the position I explained that after losing my first child, Thomas, I had never forgotten the help and guidance I had received from Mike the Funeral Director who had taken care of Thomas’s funeral. He had taken us through the most horrific and heartbreaking time of our lives with such care, compassion and empathy that he still remains a friend to my family, including my children, who never met Thomas. Through this experience I hoped that some day I would be in a position to help families who find themselves in need of the same guidance and support.

More recently, in 2018, Sean Crilley contacted me asking if I would work for him here. Having worked with him previously and in fact, trained

by Sean, I knew his ‘family first’ ethos and genuine pride in his role as a Funeral Director. I said yes immediately.

I now feel I have truly found my vocation in life through my position as a Funeral Director.

I was born in Carlisle in 1977. I have two daughters, Grace aged 11 years of age, Rose aged 7 and a step-son Josh aged 16.

I am married to Claire who I have known since she was aged 15 years. Claire is a Hotel Duty Manager at the Crown and Mitre Hotel in Carlisle. I began my training as a Funeral Director in 1997 at the age of 19 years with a local independent firm. I lost my own father when I was aged 23 so I understand the heartache that families endure when losing their loved ones.

Eventually I was joined by Sean and Jason and we all worked well together for many years, but were all disillusioned when the firm we worked for was, sadly, taken over by a national company.

However, Sean has now invited me to join himself and Jason within his company and I was more than pleased to accept his kind offer.

After 25 years experience as a Funeral Director I am delighted to be able to serve the good people of my hometown of Carlisle working for an independent family funeral company once again offering a most personal and caring service to the bereaved clients that call upon us to serve them.

Lismore Chapel of Rest In addition to our beautiful chapel room at Brook Street, we are now pleased to be able to provide our beautifully peaceful ‘Lismore Chapel’.

Set in the grounds of the former Newman School in the city centre, our private Lismore Chapel facilities opened in the summer of 2021 for the exclusive use of our client families and the quiet repose of their loved ones.

The idea behind this was to create a separate ‘quiet space’ away from our main office and chapel at Brook Street.

Our Services & Prices As a Funeral Director offering a complete 24 hour service we provide the following services; To provide professional arrangements, advice on registration, completion and distribution of all necessary documentation to all relevant burial and cremation authorities, transfer of the deceased person into our care day or night, laying to rest in his or her own clothing chapel gown in accordance with the families’ wishes, provide private chapel of rest facilities, liaising with all local clergy, celebrants, organists, printers, caterers, newspapers, gravediggers and all other relevant suppliers of associated services.

We will provide you with your own dedicated Funeral Director from the moment of the arrangement who will guide you every step of the way. We will provide funeral vehicles for example; hearse and following funeral limousines if requested.

CMA Standardised Price List

The Order has made it a legal requirement for ALL funeral directors to publish a ‘Standardised Price List’ as well as an Additional Options Price List both on their websites and in prominent positions within their premises by 16th September 2021. This has been ordered in an effort to make it easier for the bereaved to compare ‘like for like’ funeral options from funeral directors - both small and large companies and assist them in their choices.

At Sean Crilley Funeral Directors, we realise that managing funeral costs can seem daunting. We make sure everything is as transparent as possible for our clients. We will give you a detailed break down of the costs involved and explain the various funeral options we provide. In addition to the cost of your chosen funeral directors charges there will be other fees called ‘Disbursements’. These are third party charges that the Funeral Director will pay on your behalf.

Direct Cremation Service

Pre-Paid Plans

This service is an unattended option and is We are proud to offer Golden Charter not a traditional funeral service.

Funeral Plans to our clients.

Therefore no mourners attend the cremation and there is no service.

We will bring the person who has died into our care from a local address (within 20 miles. If it is over this distance the charge of £1.85 per mile will apply) during normal office hours (outside office hours an additional fee of £150 is payable), we provide a simple coffin, transport the deceased to a Carlisle Crematorium in a private vehicle at a day and time of our choosing usually within 10 days of completion of the necessary paperwork and usually either 09:00am or 09:15am at the crematorium on the appointed day. Third party fees such as the Doctor’s fee (if applicable) and the crematorium fee are included within this option.

Cremated remains will be returned to the next of kin/client within 14 days from the date of cremation. The full cost of this service must be paid in advance.

Direct Cremation Service - £1626.00.

We also offer a ‘Direct Burial Service’ which is as above in terms of no attendance and no service but prices for this can vary depending on where the interment is to take place. Our professional fees for this option remain at £825.00 not inclusive of grave purchase or interment fee. Please contact us for further advice on (01228) 544905.

Our Payment Terms

Why Plan Ahead?

Golden Charter are a trusted name when it comes to funeral planning and are affiliated with the Funeral Planning Authority (FPA).

A little thought now can give you and your loved ones peace of mind for the future both in terms of your wishes being recorded and the financial burden lifted from your family at the time the plan is at need.

All of our plans guarantee to provide the funeral director’s services specified at no extra cost to you or loved ones, no matter how much these costs rise in the future. Your plan also includes an allowance towards third party costs (cremation/cemetery fee, doctor’s fee and minister’s or officiant’s fee). The allowance increases annually on 1st July in line with increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

If you choose one of our plans for burial, the plan does not include the purchase of a grave plot.

Our terms are 14 days from the date of our invoice.

All of our charges are broken down individually as are the third party fees (disbursements); these are the fees that we pay on the clients’ behalf to third party providers such as cemeteries, crematoria, clergy, officiant, doctors, florists etc.

We do not normally require any payment prior to the funeral service. This is at our discretion. In most cases we will simply send a final account to the client after the funeral has been completed with all relevant charges on one itemised account.

Our Direct funeral options require full payment prior to completion of the service. We accept payment by Cheque, Bank Transfer or Card Payment over the telephone or at our main branch at 78 Brook Street, Carlisle.

How Are My Payments Protected?

We understand that you need reassurance that your money is in safe hands.

In keeping with Funeral Planning Authority rules, rest assured that all the payments made towards your plan are placed into a secure Trust fund. To ensure they are protected, the funds in the Trust are held separately to the company and carefully managed by independent trustees. Each year a valuation of the Trust is carried out to ensure that the fund has the assets needed to meet future payments to funeral directors.
