INTRA GROW YOUR OWN

A design proposal that aims to revolutionise the way residents of Kent approach food production and consumption Designed as a space for learning, the primary focus of the proposal is to encourage residents to grow their own fresh produce and, in turn, improve their health and well-being It fosters an ambiance of growth and integrates organic forms, reflecting its purpose Extensive research into Medway’s priorities guided the project, which aims to reduce childhood obesity and foster healthy eating habits. By learning healthy habits from a young age, the project hopes to reduce the prevalence of unhealthy takeaway options and promote sustainable living The proposed building not only addresses food miles but also offers a solution to the rising cost of living crisis The inclusion of a restaurant and a market creates opportunities for visitors to experience local produce, promoting tourism within the area and generating employment opportunities for the community With these combined efforts, INTRA Grow Your Own promises to be a project with far-reaching benefits for individuals and the wider community.

SITE ANALYSIS

The project aims to repurpose the existing steel structure by smelting and moulding it into a new frame that extends into the River Medway, serving as stilts to elevate the building To minimise environmental impact, renewable energy will be used for the smelting process, reducing carbon emissions Similarly, the project will carefully dismantle and repurpose the existing brick, avoiding carbon-intensive production methods and leveraging the durability of bricks for a robust structure By adopting sustainable practices and utilising renewable energy, the project strives to minimise its carbon footprint and promote eco-consciousness in construction In addition, the atrium of the building will be designed using plastics collected from the River Medway, and recycled into a suitable covering, addressing the issue of litter and emphasising waste reduction and recycling. These measures demonstrate the project's commitment to responsible construction practices, environmental sustainability, and creating a greener future.

LINK TO SCHOOLS

After conducting a thorough analysis of the site and its surroundings, I discerned its inherent potential and identified areas of weakness Drawing upon the advantageous proximity to multiple nearby schools and convenient transport links, as well as accounting for the challenging high-risk floodplain, I crafted a design that optimizes these factors The result is a seamlessly integrated building that harmoniously blends with the educational community, all while upholding resilience and functionality in the event of potential floods

NEW CIRCULATION

The proposed site plan for the INTRA Grow Your circulation pathway that connects the Chatham Chatham high street, guiding residents and visitors towards local businesses. By creating this new path, the project aims to promote the use of local businesses and foster a sense of community engagement With careful attention to pedestrian flow and access, the plan seeks to enhance the overall connectivity of the area and encourage sustainable modes of transportation Overall, the proposed site plan is designed to promote a vibrant and thriving local economy while prioritising the needs and desires of the community By altering the circulation, the path is directing pedestrians to pass through the building, potentially encouraging them to enter and make purchases.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES

The Floodable Sinking Square serves multiple functions throughout the year It efficiently collects and filters water for use in nurturing on-site plants, it also provides an invaluable flood protection mechanism for the surrounding area During warmer months, the Square transforms into an inviting auditorium, complete with activities, Floodable Sinking Square promises to be a captivating attraction that will captivate and inspire all year round

The central atrium has been cleverly designed to account for the strong winds originating from the river and the prevailing south-east winds from the opposite direction To ensure optimal comfort for occupants, strategically placed walls and furniture have been incorporated to deflect and redirect the winds, effectively mitigating their impact and creating a more pleasant indoor environment.

Regenerate response

Downdraft extractor fans are installed in all kitchen spaces, positioned below the hobs and rising during use. Intermittent fans with a high extraction rate of 60 litres per second ensure optimal ventilation in the kitchens

KITCHEN VENTILATION

Solar shading vertical louvres for the southfacing facades have been implanted to protect from overheating, minimising the amount of artificial cooling used

SOLAR SHADING

Strategically placed at a 30-degree angle and facing south on the flat roof, solar panels have been installed to maximize energy production This sustainable solution eliminates the need for burning energy-intensive materials, allowing for a cleaner and more eco-friendly source of energy

SOLAR HEAT ENERGY

The angled roof of the central atrium has been leveraged to collect rainwater efficiently. The harvested water is then filtered and distributed to the greenhouse via a network of underground pipes, ensuring optimal use of this precious resource

URBAN INTERVENTION

The design project aims to revitalise the riverfront of Chatham, Kent, in order to create a more vibrant and welcoming environment After conducting a thorough site analysis and research, it became clear that the main high street lacks commercial shops and units, leading to a lack of activity in the area. Furthermore, Chatham has the highest crime rate and anti-social behaviour in Kent, necessitating urgent intervention.

To tackle these challenges, the project begins with a master plan on a larger scale, addressing the main concerns and gradually narrowing down to focus on designing a specific section of the site in detail The design strategy aims to creatively connect the riverside to Chatham Intra's main street and rejuvenate the neighbourhood by introducing new trails and public spaces that cater to people of all ages

The design places significant emphasis on sustainability, featuring solar design, passive heating systems, and rainwater collection throughout the site to create a more eco-friendly and economical design Trees have also been strategically planted throughout the site, creating more greener spaces

Given Chatham's location on a major floodplain, the design places significant emphasis on anti-flooding measures

The overall goal is to create a safe, sustainable and attractive space that residents and visitors can enjoy, while also addressing the pressing issues affecting the area.

COLLECTIVE DWELLING

The objective of this project was to devise a new urban building development in Canterbury, Kent that would comprise various dwellings ranging from 2 to 4 bedrooms, as well as student accommodation The primary focus of the design was to prioritise circulation and establish new pathways connecting existing roads The proposal incorporated landscaping to enhance the surroundings and create an aesthetically pleasing environment for both the residents and pedestrians To address the demand created by the presence of three universities within a two-mile radius, a new student accommodation has been introduced To ensure inclusivity, the student accommodation was designed with ease of access in mind, featuring larger rooms specifically intended for wheelchair users Additionally, rental units were proposed at the bottom of the development to activate the proposed pedestrian path and bring liveliness to the area.
