The Design Process

After doing projects from Tokyo, London, and New York, I analyzed the thinking process of previous projects and made this thinkng map to help me execute my master thesis projects.

MUU

Pill Box + Exercise for Parkinson’s Disease Patient Different from traditional pill box design, MUU is a specific pill organizer which encourages Parkinson’s disease patients to do hand exercise as much as they can.

3 Types

stretch + pinch + grip Patients can do three types of exercises with the pill box. These exercises are three of the basic exercises patients can easily practice every where.

5 Compartments For Daily Medication Based on the research and interviews, most patients took no more than five doses a day when they are not at home

Interviews and Precedent Case Study

“They are ugly” Parkinson’s disease patients are encouraged to do exercise enormously to maintain their motor function. Years by years, their hands go weaker and weaker. Basic hand training exercise strengthen their muscles and effectively slower the deterioration.

Therefore, of course, it will be better if patients are willing to use the hand training product every hour, every day.

One of my interviewees, Mrs. Bloom, was talking about why she never reallyused her hand training tool. The huge and scary shape didn’t attract this lady. Apparently, whoever designed this, they simply only wanted people to use it in their private room.

First 3D Sketch and Feedback from professional After I got an idea of combining hand exercise and pill box, I 3D printed a squeezable model to introduce my idea and went to have Natalie, a nurse practitioner in Weill Cornell Medicine try it. It was always better to just shoot a rough idea to experts, because in that way, I would get a valuable feedback quick instead of just keep drawing sketches on my own. Natalie soon found that it was a good concept, but she also notice that the space for pills would be an issue. She suggested me to do more research on the relevant field.

Further Research

medication schedule/kinds/sizes After receiving feedback from Natalie, I understood that I had to do more research on what the medication consuming pattern patients had, and how many capsules and tablets they had to take in a day, becasue all these details affect the size of the pill box.

I started to collect patients medication schedules(in their consents), and also mapped out the kinds of medications they usually took to get the general idea of what I was dealing with.

2nd 3D Sketches and Feedback

I started to make flexible objects which had sections within. The goal at this point is to learn the relationship between flexible material and the structure. In the experiments, different shape of pill containers were made in the mock-ups to be tested. Later on I started to explore the relationship between forms and materials. By observing products around me and different shape of flexible objects I made out of several kinds of silicone, gradually, I was getting the knowledge which helped me develop the further design.

Further Exploration

Further on, I started to explore how forms and materials affect the movement and influence how people use the object. Different shape and thickness of the flexible object can help encourage different movements of hands. One of the products I found interesting and inspiring was the rubber jar opener. Rubber, along side with silicone, is also a perfect material for flexible pill box. For the jar opener here, the jagged side created more friction then the smooth side, thus it enhanced the ability to grab and rotate the caps of jars. From here, I found that I could use this multi-layer structrure on my design.

Final Concept

Later on the final design concept of a new pill box had been decided.

Inspiring from the material exploring we had beforehand, the multi-layer flexible structure had become the main feature of the design. Based on what we had experienced during the experiments, the multi-layer structure has gap between each layer which is ltike the jagged edges we tried before, it encourages people to put fingers on or between them. The structure also allows people to stretch it, grip it and pinch their fingers with it. Those flexible panels also indicate that the whole object can be packed in tiny space, for instance, a pocket.

Prototyping

revised Structure/ material experiemts As the overall appearance of design had been decided. I started trying to make silicone prototype. It was when I started to pour silicone into the the mold that I found that it was difficult for silicone to get into the gaps between those layers. The spaces between those layers definitely had to be wider. Another issue was the spaces for pills. Although I previously had investigated the space pills need, integrating the form and function together still made me underestimate how large the spaces pills requested.

Final Decision

new way of casting / silicone types To cast the object with such complicated structure precisely, I decided to make two separate mold out of different kinds of silicone. The one below is a silicone called dragon skin slow. The 7-hour cure time allows itself fill into the space between layers smoothly. The silicone for upper part of the mold is SORTA-37 which gives the mold itself a clear, near transparent color which allows me to monitor the casting process easier. For the pill box itself, I used Gel-25 as a final material for it gave the object the right feeling of hardness and flexibility.

Final Feedback

sharing ideas, thoughts, insights Patients, care givers were interested in the concept. However one of the most valuable feedback was from a caregiver, Joe. He mentioned that although this was a great invention, the way of taking pills out the pill box was still hard for PD patients. During the testing, a patient also gave another interesting idea of how they can take out pills from this pill box.

Further Development

the flaw of comtemporary pillbox and how can we redesign it According to the feedback I got, I realize how important it was for patients to have a comfortable and easy way to get their pills. And that became the reason why I develop a new project to specifically focus on designing a new way of opening up a pillbox.

The Walking Device

For Patients With F.O.G A Simple and Elegant Solution.

FOG, Freezing of Gaits is one of the common symptoms in Parkinson’s disease. Patients with the symptom experience their feet stuck when walking sometimes. A patient can use the walking device as a visual cue to help him/her walk more smoothly.

Unique Wheel Design The unique multi-layer design of the wheel makes the wheel catches obstacles easily. When patients are rolling the walking device, the bottom and the wheels can catch the obstacles ahead first and send a physical feedback to patients.

Temporary Cane After the device bumps into obstacles ahead When being pressed down, the flexible layers will transform into a flat surface against the ground.

It will then become a temporary cane to support the patient in emergency situations.

Interviews and Precedent Case Study

I Connot F**cking Walk!

One of the patients I interviewed, Doctor Zelnick, had this short introduction of what he had been through(please visit my website: pagulla. com to watch it). The disease affects a part of the brain which controls human movement function. It made Dr. Zelnick forget the skill to walk smoothly.

Although the symptom currently is not curable, professionals had found that with visual cue system, patients can walk more smoothly.

Currently, the products on the market are using laser projecting technique. The products projects a laser stripe on the ground to remind patients to walk forward.

However, these kind of technology sometimes makes patients nervous or embarrased. Most of the products looked like a medical device which patients were no fond of.

The Idea Dog Walking + Roller Skating The Idea was simple.

We wanted to help PD patients with FOG to walk more smoothly. And also wanted to help patients with tripping issue. Instead of using high technology (like laser projecting, I decided develope my idea from a stick and a wheel inspired from dog walking and roller skating.

The patients simply roll this device while walking, it serves as a visual cue and also, when the wheel bumps into an obstacle, the physical feedback will stop the patients from walking forward to prevent potential tripping.

Mock-ups First Attempt Taking the similar design process from the pill box design, I first started to make a quick 3D sketch out of cardboard and styrofoam to illustrate the idea. The structure of the design is very simple, it composed of a stick, a bottom part, and wheels. In the first mock-up I intuitively thought the design should have two wheels on the bottom to stable the whole thing.

User Testing The first one was their favorite Surprisingly, the patients I interviewed preferred the first quick mock-up I made. Because it got two wheels and a bar that covered the whole front of the feet. It made them feel secure. However, one of the patients, Dr. Zelnick mentioned that he loved the feeling of walking with another mockup which had the cog-like wheels rolling on the ground.

Therefore it was a promising path if I could combine the features of the two mock-ups together and went further from them.

Structure Exploration Observation

During the first mock-up testing, one thing interested me was that some patients would like to to grab the handle of the walking device in the opposite way. This behavior made me wonder if there was a certain form that made people to behave in certain way. I started to make several form for the structure of the waking device to test.

Structure Exploration Curve or Straight?

Therefore I started to investigate how the form of this walking device affected users postures. At the same time, I also had to make the whole design look elegant, beautiful, and comfortable to use.

By integrating 2D sketch, rendering, 3D sketch out of wood, digital rednering, step by step, the exploration helped me decide the final form of the design.

Final Choice

For the structure

Later on I decided to use downward curve to be the form of the structure. The material was made out of cherry wood by using veneer wood bending technique.

Wheel Design Developement After the first mock-up testing, I started to develop the form of wheels. Based on the feedback, I tried to investigate the pros and cons from different forms of wheels. And then I moved on to material exploration.

That was the time when I found that I could use the knowledge I gained from the experiments of the pill box. Using the similar structure and similar material, the wheels could achieve the goal I set.

The Goal no.1 was to design a wheel that can get itself trapped easily by obstructions so that it will stop patients to go forward and trip by them.

The Goal no.2 was to design a wheel that can roll and move smoothly and also create a subtle rythm at the same time.

And furthermore, the wheels could transform into different form which become the support part of the temporary cane.

Wheel Design Developement: Material/Sketch/Making Based on the form exploration and inspiration from the material exploration for the pill box design, I developed this unique, multi-layer structure wheel made out of silicone which was easy to roll and easy to “get stuck“ by obstruction and it also could transform itself to be a temporary cane. support when needed.

Final Choice - Two Options Material and Form

While doing experiments of deciding which kind of silicone was suitable for this scructure, I also did several 3D prints out of different flexible materials. The pro of 3D printed material was it was fast and easy to be made (and relatively cheaper in this case).

However, with current technology, It was nearly impossible to polish and smooth the furface of flexible 3D printed materials.

Later on, I used Rit Dye to dye colors on it to test colors.

After the material experiments, I revised the design of the from to make it easier for silicone to be casted. The final material of the wheel for working prototype was silicone rubber P-50 which has shore A hardness. It’s cure time was long which gave it enough time to fill into all the tiny space.

Final User Testing and Feedback The interesting thing was, after all this months, the patients and I had built great relationships. And it might because they trusted me very much and they thought the prototype I brought in was like a final product for sale. One of the patients broke the walking device during testing. It was my fault for forgeting to notice her to be gentle beforehand. But it also mean that the structure had weak spot and needed to be developed further.

Another interesting experience was that, after you go visiting so many times, people around the place started to know you.

And they started to share with you their thoughts and knowledge. In the bottom right photo, it was one of my interviewees’ doorman who happened to be a maker himself showing me his insights of the walking device.

Muu: Let’s redesign a pill box product: pill box date: 2.2019~4.2019 material: copper/plastic

Background

Can we design a pill box which is easier to open During and after my thesis project, Design for Parkinson’s Disease, I received many feedback from patients about how it was difficult to open up the pill box.

The reason it is difficult for patients(or generally, elder people) to open the pill box is because it requires people to sanp the cap. Sanpping is the ability of fine motor movement that pateints already lost.

Model Evolution Therefore I started to build a series of mock-ups to find a simple solution for it.

The solution Rotate the Cap

Instead of opening the cap, rotate the top to a certain compartment is way easier. The user does not need much power to rotate it and the cylinder shape creates much more space for patients who takes a lot of pills in a dose.

Another challenge patients have is that it is hard to put pills into the cases. This new pill box has a concave cover which makes it way easier for patients to put medicine in.

The “turn and pour� function was easy to understand and easy to do. To be even better, the material of the pill box (or just the material on the outside) should be something that is easy to grip.

The concave shape of the cap was easy for patients to drop pills into each compartment for the refill.

However the shape is still too shallow and the outside of the cap should be higher to prevent pills from jumpping out.

From Modigliani to a Spoon Learn from the master: A new design methodology In this project, I tried to explore a new way of design. I tried to analyze some of the works from an early 20th century painter, Amedeo Modigliani, extracted the essentail elements from his works and applied them on a daily industrial design product.

As the result, I used the disposable plastic spoon as the daily industrial design product. In this case, the modest form and low cost made a plastic spoon become a perfect tool for me to execute this design methodology.

Christina circa 1916 Analyzing the painting: what makes them attractive

As an abstract portrait painter, Modigliani is well known for his unique perspective of human beings. Most of his works have the simliar elements, structures and proportions.

In this step, I tried to distort every aspect of the painting to see if audiences’ feelings changed following the change of the certain aspect.

Proportions & Angles The Painter’s Secrets

In Modigliani’s works, many characters tilted their heads and necks to form an intriguing composition. I started to try drawing with the same technique and also started to think about the potential to apply the painter’s secret to a usual object.

De/Re-construction Sections/Movements/Directions In this step, I was focusing on applying modigliani’s secret on low-cost, unattractive, mass production products.

Clearly you could see after the object’s body being distorted, The form became more sculpture like.

To be even simpler. I used bamboo toothpick to express my interpretation of the painter’s works. I broke toothpicks into three sections which indicated head, neck and body of humam.

Three Elements Head/Neck/Body In the final I decided to use plastic spoon to be the main charactor. The spoon itself was very simple and the round top of the body gave audience a human feeling.

Based on experiments on toothpick, I also broke these spoons into three parts. It was delightful to see each one of them expressed very different character.

The Dancing Spoon To make it alive It was beautiful to see every different movement of the spoon. The next step is to make it more lively. Using strings and stick, just like a puppet, the spoon now can dance in front of audiences.

By the control from the stick on the neck the string which help the spoon defy gravity, the spoon came alive. It was amazing to see an ordinary object which most people would not have been attracted on became an attractive dynamic sculpture.

The Dancing Spoon II Further Development

The previous performance was conducted by hand control. In this stage, I wanted the spoon to really “dance� by itself. Therefore, different lengh of each part and different materials to connect each part were tested and analyzed.

Rubber found on phone cable became my choice to connect each part of the spoon following the decision I made to use magnet to drag the spoon moving.

The Dancing Spoon II Now it is dancing by itself By the movement of the set of three magnets and the elastic strengh of the phone cable, the rigid, flatten plastic spoon became a three dimensional, dynamic creature.

Following this design process, I understood how we can transform a methodology from a field to another.

From the Dancing Spoon The Lamp Design Based on the knowledge I got from the dancing spoon project, I created this beautiful conceptual lamp. The lamp three parts mimic head, neck and body which people can adjust to fulfill their imagination.

MiaoLi Handicap Bus 苗栗縣政府大型復康巴士外觀設計案 date: 11.2019~1.2020(expected)

Because it is the transit I was asked by MiaoLi county government to do branding design service run by the local government, they hope the design can be inspired on their new public handicap bus. They wanted the design to be by something about this area, Miaoli,

Hakka Floral Cloth Widely used prominently in Hakka community, cloth with bright color flower pattern texture becomes one of the impressions when people think about Hakka culture in

Meow Leopard Cat the mascot featured one of the most famous and most endangered animals in Miaoli, the leopard cat.

Created by Culture and Tourism Bureau of the county government

which is a popular tourist spot in Taiwan. To help me get more inspirations, they listed three things people love when thinking about Maioli and its Hakka community.

Tung Flower Tung trees are mainly planted in mountain areas in Miaoli. Due to the beauty of its flower, tung tree becomes one of the siginificant symbol in Hakka Culture.

Inspired by the beautiful sunset scenery at a shore in Miaoli, I created this beautiful color palette to represent the sunset and the sea beside the shore. Those parallel streching color blocks strenghen the impression of steadiness.

Inspired by this beautiful tung flower that cover all over the mountain area of Miaoli, I use simple geometric shape as a basic element, and use different color and shade to represent the differnet distances and different scenery to form this very unique mosaic painting 57

Meow Leopard Cat(the mascot) has become one of the most lovable icon for Miaoli. I made these leopard cats look like they are sitting and driving a beautiful red convertible sports car.

This interesting, ripple-like pattern was placed intentionally on the back wheel of the bus to create a dynamic, blossoming feeling. The pattern was developed originally from five overlayed circle inspired by the blossom of tung flower.

We first investigated how other similar products on the market be operated, and how does it feel to users(operators, care givers, patients.) We found that those products looked very medical and not beautiful. Also when operating, user’s hand could block the screens.

The client gave out these keywords above they wanted this device to deliver. Since device’s body material would be aluminum, which naturally would give objects a cold feeling, I decided to use multiple curve to define the design.

Aviation and spacecraft are the inspiration in this project

User Experience

Inspiration/Design Language/Features Aircraft and space vehicle design are the inspiration in this case. Evolved from the form design, I carefully arranged and designed the interface system to achieve the sense even more.

Besides the aesthetic part, different from precedent products, I put operating panel on the top so for users to easily hold the device and press buttons. In this way, the hand would not block screens when operating.

The main purpose of the device is to catch those two cords and so the device can make the cords vibrate. I photoshopped hands on to the renderings to make the client easier to picture how the new design worked.

The product contains two cord catching parts at eash side. The client wanted to make sure those catching device could be perfectly integrated in the design.

The Final 68

In the final presentation, I showed a variety of angle and the color it might be applied on. The company changed the desired material for the shell from aluminum to plastic due to the budget at the final moment but still wanted the design to have overall aluminum feeling. Therefore I tried to make the design look more aluminum like but, at the same time, still was made out of plastic.

Pattern design: Can it be peaceful and playful at the same time?

A variety of patterns were created to deliver an atmosphere of being relaxed and joyful in a working space. We also learned that the client implements mindfulness in their working space. Inspired by the core value and the spirit of the client, we developed several patterns from some iconic spiritual symboms such as, yinyan, hinduism, and some mathematical graphic which has been commonly used in many spritual cultures such as, Fibonacci sequence and golden ratio.

The main goal of the color arrangements in this project is to enhance the value we try to deliver of pattern design. The second goal is to break the impression of stereotype of some iconic symbols.

In this design proposal, we developed the pattern from Yin Yang. I applied color overlay technique to break the usual boundary of this traditional Eastern graphic.

As Realistic As We Can With the collaboration with our chief fabricator and our contract upholster, by analyzing the potential materials for upholstery and the rescued materials we have for the construction of the couch, I built several digital models and custom fabric texture to show our client how imagination can be executed in their space.

Background

Making couch for tiny corner space Claire was one of our company’s loyal client who shared the same value of sustainability and upcycling design with us. This time we were going to design and make a couch for the corner in her living room. It would be a couch that could have at least four people to seat in, but it should also look good and blend into Claire’s living room by itself.

first stage ideas Sketch/Modeling/Colors

Soon after the investigation and measurment in the space, a series of sketches were created to deliver general ideas for the design to the client.

In my experience, it was usually hard for clients to get the whole design idea due to the limitation of 2D sketches. After the first meeting with the client, I started to use digital modeling to discuss ideas within the company and the client.

Color arrangements were also been discussed in the early stage since we were very familier with the design style the client prefered.

The main purpose of the technical drawing was to let our fabricator know all the details he needed. The tricky part of this couch is to precisely transfer the complex surface into wooden structure.

The Shape of Our Future How would a car become

In this project I wanted to create a sports car which looked speedy, futuristic and beautiful. When talking about the aethetics of car, every surfaces and the lines on each surface of a car matters. In the near future, I believed the organic forms would be a sign of high end, luxury products. How to arrange curve form and organic shape was always a challenge for desginers. So I deciede to use this challenge to show the strength of my design mind.

From Squid to Car forms of living creatures

I decided to start from observing how living creatures performed in the nature. For a sports car, we wanted the design to be powerful in the look. It had to look powerful, speedy, but elegant at the same time.

Squid became my final choice of inspiration. The incredible jet flow created by this amazing sea creature gave itself one of the highest chance to capture prey and escape from enemies.

The idea of the design was to take inspiration from the general form of the squid(which followed its natural fuctions) and generally, carefully transformed the creature’s beautifully functional form into our design.

Final Design & Digital Modeling Structures/Surfaces/Forms

In this design, following the curve feature of the outline, the glass shield designs for windows, headlights and tail lights were also one of the astonishing features.

They helped to shape the the soul of this beautiful beast(or I should saybeautiful squid.)

Sketch Evolution Animation Motorcycle/Life Jacket/Hand Bag/Glasses After the car design, The curiosity started to build up in my head. I was wondering if I could transform the design directly from a chosen living creatures by drawing.

Therefore I started this project which I designed a motorcycle, a life jecket, a hand bag and a pair of glasses and afterward I created an animation for each to show how the evolution of each design and how interesting the design could be.

From Crab to Motorbike Forms/ Proportions

For the motorcycle design, I started from the crab claw. During the drawing, I soon discovered that the form and the proportion of each part of the body(in this project, the claw) were the first two factors I had to consider for the further design.

From Octopus to Life Jacket Learn from the master: Nature

Later on I created this life Jacket inspired from octopus.

This transformation technique stimulated the new design thinking method, which was like reverse engineering process. During the drawing, I was able to analyze and imagine how this certain creature moved or swimmed and how its movement could be integrated into my design.
