...ENJOY YOUR SEASON At Chub we pride ourselves on a development process that sees some of the best anglers in the country input into product design. All items are taken through a rigorous testing programme to ensure they stand up to your demands, and ultimately give you greater enjoyment on the bank. This year we are particularly excited to present our new range of Vantage luggage; holdalls, quivers and sleeves with unique features that allow you to take a modular approach when considering your tackle transport requirements. Check them out from page 32. With bank-side security in mind we have some amazing bivvies featured from page 14, with the new Super Cyfish and Tri-Brid models currently causing a stir with our anglers. See what Ed Betteridge has to say about bivvy organisation on page 19. And for comfort check out our superb range of Cloud 9 chairs, bedchairs, and sleeping bags from page 24.

Having all the gear you need to enjoy your fishing is also key to success, but we must not forget about the most important area of our sport – fish care. We spend so much time chasing our valuable quarry that we must ensure the fish are as protected as possible when they are outside of their natural environment. Take a look at our range of unhooking and protection mats from page 52. Carp fishing is most definitely growing. Every month we see new waters opening, or older ones maturing into fisheries that we dreamt about as kids. The fish are getting bigger, techniques are constantly developing, and our tackle simply must keep up the pace. That’s why we are proud and excited to bring you this 2013 Chub catalogue full of products, information, plus tips from our consultants to help you enjoy your season ahead. Tight lines.

lthough I tend to mostly fish for big carp, every now and again I find myself at a day ticket water, and the remit is always to catch a few carp. It could be for a feature, to try out a new bait or rig, or more likely than not, just because it’s good fun. You simply can’t beat a bend in the rod and a good bit of action to bring a smile to your face, and shake off the cobwebs when things have been a bit slow.

BEING PREPARED Some people would have you believe that with these types of waters all you do is turn up, chuck a couple of baits into the pond and wait for the fish to turn up. You may catch a couple with this approach, but if you really want a good day then preparation is the name of the game. When you get it right, the action can be thick and fast, and the last thing you need is to be tying up new rigs and bags in between every fish.

What you need is more of a match angler's approach to ensure you get the most from your session, and there are a few simple things you can do to ensure your day goes to plan. I try to ensure the kit I use matches the sort of angling I am doing, so for this sort of session everything is toned down a little. Most of these types of fisheries are snag free, so you can fish lighter, both in mainline and in hooklink. You don’t need big pit reels - small baitrunner type reels are much more suitable and the addition of my Outcast rods mean that I am actually playing the fish, rather than just winching them to the waiting net. It’s a pleasure to fish with this balanced sort of set up. I always ensure I have at least a dozen rigs tied before I get to the lake. They don’t need to be anything fancy, just a good sharp hook on a rig you know works for you. The same goes for bait, and again I always ensure I have at least twenty small PVA bags tied in advance. These are

threaded onto the baited rigs the night before, with a few spare as a back up. A quick change link ensures your rod can be back on the spot within seconds of landing a fish.

KEEPING BUSY A match approach is also required when feeding your swim. You want to build your swim as the day progresses, continually feeding small amounts to your chosen spots. I generally feed pellets, with small boilie hook baits and small bags of pellets. The rods are clipped up so they hit the same spot every time, and the spod rod is also clipped to the same mark so I can feed accurately. You should be continually working the swim exactly as a match angler would - doing nothing for long periods of time, as some of us carp boys are often guilty of, isn’t the best way to fish on well stocked waters. Don’t get me wrong, these methods would often be the kiss of death on

a low stocked big fish water. The commotion would send every carp in the lake as far away from you as they could get, but on the more commercial waters it’s the very same commotion that attracts them to your area, they associate it with food, and in fact it’s just like a dinner gong going off. Indeed, there is much to learn from our match fishing friends when it comes to this style of angling. Don’t think its just a summer approach either, if you adjust the amount of feed you use you can have some very good results right throughout the year. Let’s not forget, most day ticket lakes are no longer stocked with just small fish, so there is also the chance of a whacker! Next time you have a day with nothing to do, go to your local day ticket water and give it a try. Keep yourself busy, keep working that swim, and you could just find that you actually enjoy it! And that, after all, is supposed to be the reason we go fishing! www.ch

RIGHT

Use watercra ft and choose your swim carefully, no t the closes t one to the car park . Islands ar e always worth checki ng out, so ar e quiet corners or ca sting to area s of bank where anglin g is not allo wed. Don’t ignore the margins, especially to wards the ev ening. It is a known fa ct that bigg er fish will move in to the bank to feed later in the day.

Scale down yo ur tackle. Yo u don’t need 3.5lb te st curve rods , big pit reels and sh ock leaders on most day ticket waters .

Keep it simp le. With fish feeding competitivel y you won’t ne ed the latest rig or bait to fool fish. A simple approa ch with eith er a PVA bag or method feeder will keep fish interested.

Build the sw im up and ke ep active. Big beds of bait aren’t ne cessary on day ticket waters and a ‘little and often’ ap proach will often out-fish the ‘feed and wa it’ approach.

hen you look at the lake you are about to fish, all you see is a flat sheet of water. Of course there are visible features like islands, trees and weed beds, but what’s under the water is equally, if not more important. Gullies, sunken islands, gravel bars or what type of lake bottom is in front of you are all important information and the best method of feature finding is with a marker float, braid and a dedicated rod.

DON'T BE UNDER GUNNED Your marker rod set up should be able to cast as far as your normal carp rods can. The rod should have a high test curve as it needs to cast heavy leads and a large buoyant marker float and you also need a big pit reel, preferably with a quick clutch facility for easy depth finding. Load the reel with braid, which has minimal stretch and provides more information than mono. About 30lb breaking strain is adequate for the main line with a shock leader of 40 to 50lb braid for security - a finger stall to protect your finger when casting is also useful. The business end is a simple running rig. Use a large ‘zip’ lead weighing 4 to 5oz mounted on a large free running ring swivel. Pass the braid through the swivel and a large rubber buffer bead and tie on a quick connector onto which you mount your marker float.

SEARCHING FOR FEATURES In your chosen swim, cast out to your left as far as you can. Once the lead touches down, turn side on to the water pointing the rod at 90 degrees to the marker float and tightening up. Using the rod only, pull the lead and marker float along the lakebed about 3 metres at a time. The feelings and vibrations that come up from the lead will give you an indication of what the lakebed is made of. For example, if you feel a constant ‘tap,

8

Chub 2013 Pages 2-13.indd 8

gunned Don't be under to marker s me co it en wh and spodding

. You can r features Feeling fo t about the bottom learn a lo rker float using a ma tap, tap’ then you have gravel. The rod tip will bounce quite violently. If the lead is skipping and thumping, you have debris on the bottom such as light patchy weed, large stones, or branches. If it glides across the bottom that indicates there is clay. If it feels like pulling through custard, you have silt. If it starts to snag up and gets harder to pull, you have weed. Repeat the process several times to cover an arc in front of you until you find an area you want to fish.

HITTING THE SPOT With the marker float out on your chosen spot, tie a marker knot with a piece of size 2 pole elastic on the braid next to the line clip. Make a note of the far bank landscape so you have a good visual marker to line up with when casting. Now get your spod rod, which should be set up the same as the marker rod, with the same line and leader but with a simple heavy duty quick clip on the end. Use a taped up spod partially filled with water to give you casting weight and cast your spod at the marker float. Once the spod is landing next to the float, on a tight line, place the braid under the line clip. Re-cast ensuring you cushion the cast to

make the spod land next to the marker. Providing the distance is correct mark the braid on the spod rod using pole elastic as you did with the marker set-up. With the spod reeled in, cast your normal rods to the marker. Once the leads are landing in the right spot, clipped up, test again then mark the line with pole elastic. When fishing, do not forget to unclip the line from the line clip once the bait is in position.

STALKING

STEALTH The most important aspects for this branch of our beloved pastime are stealth, observation and patience… oh, and perhaps a strong nerve as hooking big carp inches from the bank is explosive! It goes without saying that you need to be stealthy when trying to extract big carp from the margins. I have always advocated that you must practise at being still. Trust me it isn’t easy to stand motionless. I’m sure you can all remember playing statues as a kid. Well I liken stalking carp to this children’s game. The difference is it’s the carp that will tell you if you move!

OBSERVATION Try and position yourself where you know carp patrol and make sure you have bank side cover to avoid any silhouetting. Watch your quarry and learn from them. How do they feed? How do they move? Are they solitary or in groups? How do they react when they come across bait? Can you identify individual carp? If you keep watching all these questions will be answered with the added satisfaction that you are up close and personal and for a few fleeting moments, part of their world rather than yours. That is what stalking carp should make you feel like: a semi-state of detachment where you become part of your surroundings. Adopt this philosophy and you are already in with a great chance of success.

PATIENCE The final, and perhaps most important part of stalking is patience. Patience is infuriating to teach as it is imprinted differently in every one of us. For some five minutes of stillness is a long time. To others, five hours go by so quickly that time has no reference. And there lies the true secret of stalking! Time should have no reference. Bait when no carp are around so fish can arrive on your bait. Never bait on top of a carp, as this will ruin your chance! Observe when the carp are feeding confidently and gently lower your bait in position. Watch the carp take your bait and strike as the bait goes into his mouth, don’t wait for the line to move off, and get ready for the fireworks! Big carp will try and get as far away from the bank as possible when first hooked. With the Chub Stalking rods, you can successfully control the carp and they will also absorb the violent lunges a huge fish can give. Stalking is a great way of catching big carp and I think helps to satisfy the hunting instinct all anglers possess. See you on the bank.

In the days of high quality rods that can cast to the horizon, the oft-forgotten art of stalking big carp in the margins seems to be a dying art. Long-time carper Mark Holmes shows how you can literally catch the fish you want from under your feet.

ver spent time watching a Heron stalk its prey? Well whether you have or you haven’t, let me tell you I never miss an opportunity to watch these birds fish. Why? Well simply, they have the ability to show all of us how stealth can be the best piece of fishing tackle you will ever need. Unfortunately, despite me asking the R&D guys at Chub to develop this for the consumer market, they have failed miserably. Yes fellow carpers, I’m afraid this is one piece of tackle you have to learn for yourself.

GETTING IT

Ed Betteridge, by his own admission, was far from perfect when it came to organising his bivvy, so who better to ask for advice than a reformed character!

F

or those who know me, it may well put a smile on your face to read that I am writing a piece on bivvy organisation. It’s fair to say that in the past I haven’t been the most organised and I’m still a bit messy nowadays, but I have learnt the importance of keeping everything together. Whether it is for a quick pack up and move, which is often important to get onto the fish, or just so I can find items easily, organisation has become more important recently.

CHOOSE A BIVVY THAT SUITS YOU A good place to start with bivvy organisation is the bivvy itself. I love the Chub Tri-Brid; it is very light making it easy to transport, quick to set up and it has a lot more room inside than is first apparent.

POSITION YOUR BIVVY CORRECTLY I always try to position my bivvy at an angle to keep the elements out, but also so that I can see the rods and as much of the water in front of the swim as possible, whether that is from lying in my Cloud 9 Bag or sitting on the middle of the bedchair – if a fish shows then I want to be in the best position to see it. This is where the zip open front is very useful because it allows a good panoramic view of the swim and I always leave it partially zipped in at the bottom so I can quickly close it if the weather turns.

INSIDE YOUR BIVVY Inside the bivvy I always have my kit arranged in the same way. This is important because over time you get use to where everything is and it makes moving around less hazardous. I have my bedchair positioned long ways. Behind the bed I use the bivvy bag instead of a ground sheet which keeps my rucksack and any spare clothes off the floor and prevents them from getting damp.

I also make sure that all my kit is packed away in the right compartments of the bag so I can locate them quickly. I use my bait bucket as a bivvy table to hold my radio, receiver, phone etc. I slide my rod holdall under the foot of the bed and position the top outwards so I can easily slide my throwing stick or floatation sling out if I need them. In front of the bed I keep my waders near the rod holdall and folded in such a way that I can step into them quickly whilst playing a fish. Most importantly I have the stove and my tea making kit all to hand. This allows me to light the burner and put the kettle on without moving from the bed which is invaluable on cold mornings! I use a Rigger Bait Bag for my bait and food as I like to keep my boilies frozen for as long as possible and this helps to chill the milk, bacon etc to give them a longer life on the bank. One of the side pouches is used as intended for the bait tubs, but the other I have adapted to hold my cooking and tea making utensils. Finally I always hang my headtorch off the locking nut on the Cloud 9 Bedchair so it is always to hand and I can grab it if I get a bite in the night.

K HOLMES E D IT O R IA L / M A R

In a carp world full of the latest gizmos and next fancy thing, bait tactician Mark Holmes thinks some anglers are missing the secret ingredient…quite literally.

BAIT

THE FORGOTTEN SUBJECT

M

any years ago in the 70’s, when I first realised I had been born a carp angler, understanding how carp responded to bait was of vital importance. Fast forward to today with the advances in rods, reels, bedchairs, bivvies and everything and that understanding seems to have been devalued somewhat. Of course there are now so many bait companies out there taking care of carp anglers needs I accept things have changed and for the better. However, it is so important for anglers to try and understand what they want in a bait.

WHAT DO YOU WANT IT TO DO?

LOOK AT THE OPTIONS Groundbaits, method balls, paste wraps and softer boilies are all ways of trying to find the right solution. There are so many things you can add to these that will pull carp to the hook bait and give you a far greater chance of catching. Remember though that attraction is governed by water temperatures, PH levels and all kinds of natural occurrences such as silt disturbance, algal blooms, etc. Try soaking your hook baits in amino rich liquids. I find that air-drying my baits and then rehydrating them with liquid attractors is a great way of boosting their appeal.

utting a way of p A simple d of amino acid heap loa on around your net. attracti . A real fish mag hookbait www.ch

Chub 2013 Pages 14-23.indd 23

Alternatively you can add attraction by creating your own bait dips with the use of glycerine. Above all try and keep away from fish oils if you want to use the same bait all year round. What is great in the summer can be a disaster in the winter. Try baits that substitute nut oils for fish types during the winter, because the latter coagulate at far lower water temperatures. Trust me, if you start to think about your bait the permutations are endless and you will increase you catches. As I always say... dare to be different and you will reap the rewards.

ubfishin

ried air d quid rate Rehyd es with li tors c boili attra

Ask yourself what do you want your bait to do? How do you want it to react? Do you want to remove the need to make regular bait decisions? The last question may seem strange but if you have total confidence in your bait, then it allows you to concentrate on the other important pieces in the carp jigsaw such as location, watercraft and rig technology. Although I do understand this stance, it isn’t for me. Why? Simple... the environment a carp lives in changes with the seasons. Weather conditions and other natural phenomena such as insect hatches and fry proliferation will all change what I want my bait to do. It would be asking a lot of a bait to remain attractive all year round with so many different variables. Clear evidence of this is that catch rates can be so seasonal. I am convinced the bite indicators rise because the jigsaw pieces all fall into place.

However, when times are slow and the conditions are against you, that is when bait understanding can help to winkle out one of the big fish. My number one piece of advice is to try and keep a clear assessment of what a carp needs from bait. I won’t turn this into a science lesson but did you know a carp needs 11 amino acids that do not exist within its natural DNA structure? Just think... if we could only fish using amino acids as bait! Unfortunately this isn’t possible because most exist within various substances that when boiled kill the chemical attractors we need. The carp has to find the amino acids from the lake, and that is one of the greatest opportunities for us as anglers.

ver the past couple of seasons Chod has been responsible for at least three-quarters of my captures and has become my default rig when approaching a new water. There is little doubt that the Chod is a big fish rig and is most suited to targeting large carp. Buying them ready made is convenient, but offers you no control over the components, knots and dimensions of what you cast out. The Chod rig requires few items, is relatively simple to tie and constructing your own will, in the long term, be kinder on the pocket. Owing to being very short it can be a little fiddly to tie but, with minimal practice, becomes a lot easier.

1. 1. The components required to tie your own Chod rigs. Purpose designed Chod hooks, large rig rings, stiff nylon and size 11 ring swivels.

6. 6. Trim the tag end leaving about 8mm.

11. 11. Trim the tag end leaving around 3mm.

2. Although the rig is less than three inches long you’ll need eight inches of hook link to construct it otherwise you’ll find tying the knots awkward.

3. Tie on your hook with a knotless knot ensuring that the filament exits through the front of the eye. Leave a tag end of around an inch.

8.

7. 7. Use a lighter to lightly blob the tag end. Take care not to burn either yourself or the hook link.

13.

12. 12. Shape the rig to form a smooth, 90˚ curve. Rubbing the material with your thumb will make it more workable.

13. To keep your hook in the prone position, ensuring consistent hooking, it is essential that everything sits straight in the vertical plane. ubfishin

4. Place a rig ring onto the tag end. Mine have a diameter of 3.7mm as free movement could be compromised if too small a ring is used.

9.

8. Pull back to form your ‘D’. The blob will prevent the tag end pulling back through the eye.

www.ch

Chub 2013 Pages 24-37.indd 29

4.

3.

2.

9. Fold the link 9mm longer than you want the finished rig to be and slide on the small eye of the ring swivel.

5. 5. Thread this tag end through the back of the hook’s eye to exit at the front. Cutting the tag end at an angle to form a point will make this easier.

10. 10. Tie on the ring swivel with a single overhand loop. The breaking strain of chod filaments are very understated so this knot has easily enough strength.

14. 14. Your chod rig is now ready to go.

very angler will have their own opinion as to what constitutes the ultimate carp. It’s an important part of carp fishing because we shouldn’t impose our views on anyone, because fishing is a pure hedonistic pursuit and every angler should be able to enjoy their fishing without judgement or prejudice. So why did I think this was my ultimate carp? This fish is very special for quite a few reasons. Firstly, it was big, over 50lb. Secondly, unlike most big carp in the UK, it wasn’t a stocked fish. This fish had been born and bred in the lake where it lived. Most of the big carp in the UK can generally be traced back to an original stocking, old maybe, but still fish that started life in a fish farm. This fish was a true 50 pounder, its weight only fluctuating slightly over a full season, probably due to it being male. The majority of 50lb plus fish caught in the UK are generally down to the amount of spawn that they are carrying, and I have known some fish to vary in weight by as much as 15lb over a year.

To this day the fish doesn’t like to be caught! It usually only comes out about once every two years but can disappear for anything up to five years at a time. Not an easy fish to catch considering the lake size and angling pressure that the venue receives. I know some anglers who have tried to catch it for more than ten years yet have still failed. Why? I can’t answer that, but it certainly isn’t down to a lack of skill or perseverance. Despite the challenge it brings, the fish’s most redeeming feature is its appearance; ideal proportions and a scale pattern that can only be described as carp perfection. With all these points considered you can understand why I really wanted to catch this fish.

CAMPAIGN OF DOMINATION I started my campaign with no expense spared. My basic plan was to bait heavily and fish as often as possible. I knew if I could introduce enough of my chosen bait it wouldn’t be long before it dominated the lake. I’m pleased to say it worked, not only because it gave me the target fish, but because the whole combination probably cost more than £20 per kilo! My first session in that spring of 2007 produced fish to over 40lb, which was a great surprise, and over the next six weeks I caught over 50 fish including a good number of 30’s. I knew it was only a matter of time before the big fish picked up my bait, my confidence was that high.

On the day it happened I bizarrely decided to go for a day session, completely out of the blue. Why? Because something inside told me I just had to be there. Even then I didn’t make the decision lightly because the venue was 125 miles from home! I arrived at the lake around 9.00am and due to swim choice, which happened to be straight out of the back of the truck, I was fishing comfortably by 9.15am. I made three carefully placed casts considering previous observations I’d made since I’d started the campaign. At 10.30am I landed a 25lb fish and despite the result I knew that before the day was through I would catch my dream. At about 3.15pm I was brought back to the real world with a screaming take and as soon as I connected with the fish I knew instantly it was the one I wanted, its strength was just incredible. Eventually, after a very difficult battle, I landed the fish one swim further down the lake having had to jump-in and wade down the margin to prevent it getting in the snags to my left. When it went into the net I let out a cry of pure joy! The fish was everything and more that I could ever have imagined. That fact that it pushed the scales to 53lb 12oz was just a bonus. I know I’ll never catch another fish like it, and to be honest I don’t want to. This is my ultimate carp.

arp fishing is a strange endeavour and it is one of the few things in life where time can play as big a part as skill. You could be the worst angler in the world but as long as you have a bait in the water the chances are a carp will eventually come along and hang itself. Therefore, if you are on limited time, which I’m sure most of you are with work and other ‘real life’ commitments demanding your attention, you are already at a disadvantage. But wait! Before you go and sell all your gear and buy some golf clubs there are still plenty of opportunities to catch. I always feel that mindset plays a big part. A lot of anglers look at me like I’m mad turning up to a lake just before dark, knowing that I have got to be away for work in the morning. You should never feel that a session is too short, even nicking a few hours could be enough to get you that one bite to turn your season around.

wrong, I’m not suggesting you should jump straight into a swim just because a couple of fish came out the day before, but it gives you something to start on. Perhaps they were caught on a new wind and are likely to be backing off it by the time you arrive? There might have been a lot of pressure in the area. Did a lot of bait go in? These are just a few of the thoughts that will ultimately affect the choices you make before and during your session. As useful as this effort can be, nothing beats actually seeing the water with your own eyes and time spent doing a lap of the lake to see where the fish are will seldom be time wasted. Make sure any rigs you are likely to use are ready to go and the rods are set up. Try to keep all the essentials such as rig wallets, alarms and bank sticks easily accessible so once you’ve chosen your swim you can be fishing as quickly as possible. t Result! Shor n be sessions ca if productive you put the work in.

BE PREPARED The actual fishing itself should really start at home preparation is vital. Sending a few texts or checking on Facebook to see if anything is getting caught can give you a real head start. Couple this with keeping a check on the weather and you can begin to build a picture of where the fish might be. Don’t get me

You’ll do yourself no favours by ditching the bed chair and sleeping on the unhooking mat or anything silly like that! Personally I always use a barrow to get my kit to the water. I leave my sleeping bag on my bed chair and this goes on the base of the barrow. Sitting across the barrow handles is a carp cradle – this great unhooking mat also acts as a makeshift barrow bag for any of my bulky stuff such as winter clothing and waders. Nearly all of my other gear fits inside a large Chub carryall - rig bits, cooking gear, cameras and anything else I might need. A small water container and a bait bucket with a couple of kilos of boilies, plus a few tubs of pop-ups are always in my armoury. I use The Edge by Aqua Dynamix. Finally my rods, net, shelter and spare sticks are stored in a basic quiver which isn’t bulky and keeps everything easily to hand. If you use a barrow make sure all of your kit fits neatly onto it. If loaded properly it should be perfectly balanced and easy to push. With everything organised and knowledge of where the fish have been coming out you have already given yourself an advantage, but your next decision will single-handedly decide if you are going to catch.

Location is even more important on short sessions and is something that must not be rushed. Far too often I see someone arrive as its getting dark and jump into the first available swim. This normally results in a blank. You should always make the effort to have a proper look around - even in darkness you will be able to locate fish either lit up by the moonlight or by the sound of them crashing out. Spend as long as you need to find something to go on. Put the hard work in beforehand and you will reap the rewards.

RIGS AND BAITING Once you have located some fish the next thing is to get a rig to them. Generally I will leave the marker rod at home and just have a quick feel around with a light lead. I’m not into fishing really tight spots and so long as it’s presentable I’m not too worried what the bottom is like. Most of the time I fish either a chod rig or a short hinged stiff rig. With both I’m confident that they will be presented well, even if there’s some weed present. As long as I get a reasonable drop with the lead I’m happy. Don’t be afraid to fish single hook baits or, as I often do, scatter a few handfuls of boilies in the area remembering that time is of the essence and you’re just trying to sneak one bite. Try keeping disturbance to a minimum during your session. Stamping around a swim or banging things can send every carp to the other end of the lake. www.ch

DON’T IGNORE SHORT SESSIONS Once you start getting into the routine of short sessions they become a lot easier and more enjoyable. It’s surprising how much fishing time you can fit in between a 9-5 job, and you will without question put more fish on the bank. Short session fishing should not be ignored and can really change your season! Good luck!

he most important aspect of carp fishing, and one that gets overlooked the most, is carp care. We must ensure we have the right equipment to look after our carp. You need a large 42” soft mesh landing net with a strong but light handle. Set up your landing net, unhooking mat and fish care products before you start fishing. The mat should be large and deeply padded with a cover flap for laying over the carp to help keep it calm. Position the mat on flat ground to prevent the carp sliding off. Place the weigh sling on top of the unhooking mat. Place your forceps, fish care products, scales, weigh sling and a bucket of lake water near the mat.

USING S E N I L K SLAC

Ideally a slack line should hang vertically from the rod tip and not out at an angle. I want the line to touch the lake bed from almost directly below the rod tip and then remain on the bottom right out to the lead, encouraging the fish to move freely about the swim. Once my lead has touched down I hold the rod aloft and then slowly lower it, laying the line down as straight as possible before paying off a few feet from the reel whilst it settles. Opening the reel’s bale arm is the best way to do this, as using the clutch will cause line twist to build up. It is usually necessary to pay off more line a few minutes later because the mainline will tighten up as more of it sinks through the lower layers of the water column. I keep paying off line until it’s settled and hanging vertically off the rod tip. Only then will I attach my bobbins. The closer to the bank carp are prepared to feed the easier they will be to catch, but they are unlikely to feed with abandon when a tight line is running through the area. Slack lines keep things more natural in my swim and I’m convinced using them gives me more opportunities.

close in! there are carp feeding Slack lines at dawn -

I

consider using slack lines to be extremely beneficial to my angling. Whilst their use isn’t suitable for every situation (snags, extreme range, etc) they do, on the whole, offer a distinct advantage over tight lines. The less tension there is on the main line the lower in the water it will sit. Any carp coming into contact with a tight line will be spooked, whereas a slack one will feel more like a piece of weed, or other detritus, which would naturally occur in their environment.
