Prevention Services build public awareness and knowledge about substance abuse and its consequences, while working directly with youth and adults to build their capacities for avoiding substance abuse.

Prevention Services Substance Free Living’s Prevention Services educate and counsel individuals and groups about substance abuse and its consequences, while also raising awareness in the broader community of these issues.

Through school-based counseling, community events and referrals, we are able to help people of all ages regain healthy lifestyles.

Bath Area Hope for Youth Bath Hope for Youth provides one-on-one and small group counseling in schools to youth identified as being at risk for substance abuse. We work with students to help them make healthy choices.

Programs and counseling services are school and community based and include: • prevention education • prevention counseling • substance abuse assessments and referrals • community recreation Children who are identified as being at-risk for substance abuse are referred by their schools to the program. Services are free, confidential and available to all children.

Steuben Council on Addictions Steuben Council on Addictions provides the general public with relevant substance abuse information through community events, advertising, and publicity. We visit schools and adult community groups to help people build their knowledge and skills for substance abuse prevention. An evidence based curriculum is used that helps students boost “protective factors” such as family attachment, prosocial involvement, academic participation, sense of right and wrong, and association with pro-social peers. There is a wide range of courses to choose from and custom workshops are also available.

We educate students and community groups on a range of topics, including but not limited to: • Life skills • Bullying prevention • Self-esteem • Active parenting Impaired Driver Program The Impaired Driver Program is a seven week educational program that covers many aspects of the traffic system and drinking and driving. It is a mandated court referral program for people

who are convicted of drinking and driving. There are weekly classroom sessions and a screening instrument to determine if a participant should be evaluated for treatment of an alcohol or other drug problem. Those convicted of drinking and driving are mandated to enroll.

The John Southard Youth Recreation Program The John Southard Youth Recreation Program engages youth in physical, artistic, and mental/ social interaction while providing alternative, drugfree activities. Every summer JSYRC provides the youth residing in Bath, NY, with a five-week summer camp for all children. The camp includes field trips on Mondays and Wednesdays, as well as tennis and arts and crafts on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The program is completely free to all Bath youth, ages 5 to15, and is a great way to keep them busy doing safe and fun activities throughout the summer.

The Recreation Program also hosts a Halloween parade and Easter Egg Hunt ever year, both free of charge.
