Whether you’ve had a year that was one for the books or one that could’ve been better, ‘tis the season to eagerly anticipate What Comes Next—I know I am! The festivities of the holidays and the promise of the future has us listing resolutions, making plans, and setting goals, so much so that the possibilities of great, shiny fresh starts to overshadow the plain fact that what is, right here and now, is just as important (and exciting!) as what will be. And so, to count my blessings right here, right now, I have a great team here at Go! that deserves the cutest, specially-wrapped presents, a husband that is excited to catch the latest Star Wars movie, and family and friends eager to snuggle up and have a holiday-themed movie marathon in between bouts of decorating and Christmas shopping. I hope you take the time to count your blessings, too—and may this issue, stuffed with the season’s best, be one of them!

While You Were Sleeping This 1995 rom-com is about a fare token collector who pretends to be the fiancee of a commuter when he falls into a coma after being pushed by muggers onto the tracks. The plot gets a little complicated at some point, but don’t be discouraged. You’ll be laughing your pants off at the characters’ witty exchanges, but you’ll also find yourself reaching for the tissue towards the end – after all, it’s really just a lighthearted film about the importance of family. Join Santa’s helper as he gets into all sorts of hilarious situations while showing New Yorkers the true meaning of Christmas FLICK TRIVIA:The movie was such a hit that it eventually inspired a Broadway musical.

The Nativity Story As one of the best Biblical epics in recent years focusing on the birth of Jesus and the events around it, the movie is touted for its message of humility and unconditional love. Watch out for the realistic portrayal of the culture of Jews living at that time, as the costumes and movie sets stay true to Jewish heritage and tradition. FLICK TRIVIA: Keisha Castle-Hughes, who plays Mary, was herself infanticipating while filming the movie. It is the first film to have a world premiere in Vatican City.

IN LIVING COLOR Combining age-old practices in indigo dye production with the latest technology, the Custom-Made Craft Center markets native products to support indigenous communities and forest conservation efforts

WORDS: MARI-AN SANTOS. PHOTOS: JUN PINZON. HAIR STYLING: RICK BURI. HAIR AND MAKEUP: CHRISTINE LOPEZ.

Rolls of woven abaca are dyed naturally by upland forest-dependent communities in different parts of the Philippines and sent to countries across the globe.

“When we started the Indigo Project, there were no takers,” says Benilda Camba, Enterprise Development Coordinator of Non-Timber Forest Products – Exchange Programme (NTFP-EP) Philippines. As a nonstock, non-profit, non-government organization, it assists and works with forest-dependent communities in the Philippines. “It was only Globe who really worked with us on this,” she says. The Indigo Project involves the establishment of natural indigo dye powdering facilities in the provinces of Quezon, Palawan, Aklan, Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, Negros Occidental, Zamboanga, and Bukidnon. Through its My Fair Share Program, Globe supports social enterprises with information and communication technology tools, capacity building support, and market access. Ruth Canlas, Executive Director of NTFP-EP Philippines and Managing Trustee of the Custom-Made Craft Center (CMCC), the marketing arm for all the communities being supported by NTFPEP Philippines, says, “Right now, the ability of the indigenous people to manage and use their resources for their livelihoods is threatened by pressures from mainstream society and by policies that do not take into account their indigenous people (IP) culture and needs.” NTFP-EP Philippines and CMCC work with IPs in developing livelihoods that are also sensitive to their culture. They also extend assistance to sustainably manage the resources (non-timber forest products) used, and help in capacity-building and product and technology development. Compliance with government regulation is provided by NTFP-EP Philippines. For their marketing needs, they are linked with CMCC and other local marketing arms.

Natural Indigo

Indigo is indigofera tinctoria, a shrub from whose leaves the indigo dye naturally comes. The traditional art of extracting and applying indigo on textiles has been forgotten over the years due to the emergence of synthetic dyes. CMCC sought assistance from the Philippine Textile Research Institute to marry technology with age-old practices for consistency of product and expediency in production, and these have been taught to the community members.

Forest dependent communities of Madalag, Aklan harvest indigo leaves from their community, some of them, from their own backyards.

Training provided by NTFP-EP and partners have now made master weavers of the young people of the upland forest-dependent communities.

“When we started the Indigo Project, there were no takers. It was only Globe who really worked with us.”

Previously ravaged by typhoon Yolanda, this farming community in Aklan, goes about their farming practices for daily sustenance.

Designers and indigenous peoples work together to produce marketable items like woven cloth pouches, pencil cases, and notebooks.

9

#BizSavvy It takes three months for the indigo plant to flower, at which point, the leaves are gathered and manually fermented, filtered, aerated, and powdered. The powdered dye that they produce is bought by CMCC from the communities, supplementing their livelihood and providing them additional income with very little capital. After typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) ravaged the province of Aklan, Globe expanded the areas of support from just one to 11 barangays in Madalag, Aklan. The plant grows fast and bountiful in riverbeds, backyards, and vacant lots. It is a nitrogen-fixer, making the soil rich in nutrients. The communities will be able to harvest year-round. Though it is still in its initial stages, indigo dye is fast gaining a following among designers such as loungewear designer Twinkle Ferraren, a Philippine jeans

maker who uses it to dye natural cotton from Japan; and Anthony Cruz Legarda, a Filipino-American designer and textile technologist based in California. CMCC is determined to meet increasing demand by supporting the communities who are producing the supply.

Leveraging Technology

“We started with Internet; all members of the staff were given Globe Tattoo for their work on the field. It’s a big help to have Internet access, wherever you are,” Camba says. “Recently, we were provided with Globe Charge, which is a credit card facility through mobile phones. Who would ever think that we would have a facility similar to those that stores in malls have? We are also now working on having an inventory system. This has been a problem for us as we have a lot of products and we have difficulty tracking

them. We are now also working on selling products online. As we have only one store, our showroom, this would definitely boost our sales,” Canlas says. With Globe’s partnership, CMCC now has the capability to offer its products to customers abroad through Skype. “We are not business people, we are more involved in community development, but all this technology helps drive the business,” adds Camba. Camba says that their vision is to contribute to forest conservation and improving the quality of life of forestdependent communities. “By doing so, we will all benefit,” she concludes. Contact: Kesha Condez 0915-5170836 kesha.condez@gmail.com info@cmcrafts.org / sales@cmcrafts.org http://www.cmcrafts.org/

Community members in a barangay in Aklan work together to manually process the indigo from leaves to powder dyes. Various handmade items by indigenous peoples are on display at the CMCC showroom in Quezon City.

Jet-setting Filipinos can bring traditions with them on their travels with T’boli t’nalak luggage tags and passport holders.

Thanks to Globe, even in remote upland villages, NTFP-EP staff are able to fulfill their work obligations while on the field.

“We are not business people; all this technology helps drive the business.”

It is only a matter of time before traditional indigo-dyed dresses like these become the rage on catwalks not only locally but internationally.

GALACTIC DESTINY The most anticipated movie of the year is upon us. With a new director, a new vision, some awesome sci-fi action and special effects, Episode VII - The Force Awakens is bound to be a hit. Think: Romance, action, mysterious powers, epics battles, alien species, laser guns, and a ton of space ships make up the legend that is Star Wars. Buckle up, young Padawans—it’s going to be an intergalactic adventure of epic proportions.

Cover Story

If you’re a film geek, a sci-fi nerd, or a pop culture vulture, then the news of Star Wars Episode VII- The Force Awakens was like Christmas coming early this year. And if you’re just a casual, curious human being, there’s surely something in that tantalizingly exciting trailer (or in the way your friends can’t stop

talking about it) that has gotten your interest piqued. It’s been decades since this George Lucas masterpiece came into our consciousness, but there’s something about that galaxy far, far away that has kept us hooked all these years. Think you know the story (or don’t at all?) Read on for a little refresher.

TIMELINE EPISODE I

THE PHANTOM MENACE

EPISODE II

ATTACK OF THE CLONES

Sith warrior (and baddie for this Episode) Darth Maul hunts them down.

One of the greatest film sagas of our time kicks off with Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Set 32 years before the seminal events of Episode 4, integral character Obi Wan Kenobi is only still an apprentice to master QuiGon Jinn when fatefully (or by the power of The Force) he meets Anakin Skywalker, a young boy with awesome potential, soon caught in the crossfire in the galactic struggle between evil Sith and noble Jedi. The Jedis are tasked to assist and protect Queen Amidala against the evil Trade Federation, while

12

UNFORGETTABLE SCENE: The epic battle between Obi Wan, Qui-Gon, and Darth Maul—with that iconic double-bladed light saber never seen before (or again). Also the first appearance of two indefatigable characters: C-3PO and R2D2. Who is the Phantom Menace? Well, it’s just that—there is an unseen enemy, and this is just the beginning. KEY PLOT TWISTS: In the shadows, Darth Sidious and his Sith apprentice Darth Maul plot their secret plan. Qui-Gon Jinn’s death. Insert crying emoji here! Obi-Wan Kenobi is able to defeat Darth Maul by slicing him in half—a gruesome way to go! Obi-Wan Kenobi takes Anakin and trains him in the ways of the Force (indeed, it is strong with this one).

In between Episode II and Episode III, there were two animated series. Star Wars: Clone Wars (2003) and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008). While not strictly film canon, they spanned the timeline between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy. Most importanly, our hero Anakin continues to grow even more powerful—yet there is a hint of dark things to come, of course premonitioned by Yoda. Is there still hope in the chaos? We must watch on.

he has both a way with words and swords (a green saber that is iconic to this day). Yet Dooku escapes as the Clone Wars dawn, and our love story ends (or begins?) with a secret wedding.

In Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones , a grown up faces the classic dilemma of duty versus love, and finds himself falling for Queen Amidala—a definite no-no in the Jedi Code. Why can’t he have both? But wait, the action heats up as Master Obi-Wan discovers a sinister plot that plunges them into all out war— and an encounter with Jango Fett seems to complicate, not clarify matters. Blood is shed as thousands of Jedi and droids alike fall in the battlefield, highlighted by Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Count Dooku crossing sabers. Joining in the fray is frail litle Yoda, showing

KEY PLOT TWISTS: Ten years after Episode I, ObiWan Kenobi and a stronger and older Anakin Skywalker foil an assassination attempt on Queen Amidala. Anakin Skywalker’s mom is killed by Tusken Raiders. He slaughters them all, yet dreams about his mother’s suffering. Count Dooku. on the side of the evil Trade Federation, is creating a new droid army. Are they strong enough to match up to the Jedi? In the battle between Jedi and Dooku, Anakin’s arm is severed! Yoda steps in to rescue them. Secret schematics for a superweapon is revealed. Dun dun dun! Cool tech: Anakin is fitted with a robotic arm!

EPISODE III

REVENGE OF THE SITH

The third installment of the prequels is Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of The Sith. If you thought that there would be no end to the conflict, you’d be right—the Jedi believe

that there are still darker forces at play. Even more worrying is Anakin’s fear of losing Amidala messing up his mind and calling him to the Dark Side, helped along by the nefarious schemings of Palpatine (not who we think he is!). Obi Wan can’t stop Anakin, and the climactic battle between good and evil take place, with Obi-Wan crossing swords with Darth Vader while Yoda battles Darth Sidious.

KEY PLOT TWISTS: Hhero Anakin Skywalker transforms into the iconic nemesis Darth Vader. Order 66 decimates the Jedi. Only Obi-Wan and Yoda survive, to fight Darth Vader in the ultimate boss battle. Vader is burned by a volcanic river. Amidala dies giving birth to twins, Luke and Leia. Vader does not know they survived.

EPISODE IV

A NEW HOPE Between Episode III and Episode IV, there is a series of animation shows, Star Wars Rebels, that focuses on the origins of the rebellion. Establishing their mission, their objectives, and setting a course for Episode IV.

Star Wars: Episode IV opens the second set of blockbusters. With the dark ending of Episode III, this new storyline promises to usher in what could be the return to the light after an embittered past. Anchoring A New Hope is Luke

Skywalker (yes, Anakin’s son) as he sets out on a journey across the galaxy. He gains some powerful allies (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C3PO and R2D2), saves the princess (Princess Leia), battles the evil Empire, and learns the ways of the Force, granting him super special abilities and powers. Luke and Leia don’t know it yet, but they’re right in the middle of making Star Wars history. KEY PLOT TWISTS: Princess Leia carries some vital information against the Empire for

the Rebel Alliance— then she is captured by Darth Vader! Luke Skywalker meets with Obi-Wan Kenobi after discovering two droids, R2-D2 and C-3P0. He does not know how epic the impact of this meeting will be to his life. Luke and Obi-Wan plan to rescue the captured Princess Leia, with the help of Han Solo and his Wookie, Chewbacca—yet another addition to the pantheon’s lovable characters. We bid Obi-Wan farewell as he is killed in a duel with Vader.

13

Cover Story EPISODE VI

RETURN OF THE JEDI

EPISODE V

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Obi-Wan’s spirit force tells Luke that Leia is his sister and that he must eventually face Darth Vader again— key discoveries for our hero.

planet Hoth has been discovered by the Empire. Giant tanks called AT-AT Walkers attack the base with Stormtroopers—the CGI here is as sophisticated as they come.

Leia and Han lead a small guerrilla team to Endor to destroy the shield generator, while Luke lets himself be captured by Vader.

Solo and Leia escape the invasion but are stalked by bounty hunter Boba Fett.

If there is one epic moment in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, its this: After the rebels have succeeded in destroying the Death Star, Darth Vader intensifies his search for Luke Skywalker. They face as enemies, yet Vader chooses this moment to reveal a sinister secret (and creates a cinematic moment pop culture will never forget) by uttering the now-famous words: “Luke, I am a your father.” Chills down the entire audience’s spine. KEY PLOT TWISTS: Years after their victory, the Rebels’ new base on the ice

Luke crashes on Dagobah with R2-D2 and discovers Yoda, who turns out to be a Jedi Master. Solo is betrayed by his old friend Lando Clarissian in Cloud City. Fett takes Solo and prepares him for Jabba the Hutt while Vader captures Leia. Luke senses his friend’s plight and decides to leave his training with Yoda. Vader sets up a trap to capture Luke, and to add insult to injury, chops his own son’s hand off as their true relationship is revealed. Luke seemingly plummets to his death but is saved by Lando who has also saved Leia. Getting a new robot hand, Luke sees off Lando and Chewbacca on the search for Han.

The final showdown between father and son is revealed in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of The Jedi. Luke and Leia stage the daring rescue of Han Solo and finally put a stop to the evil Empire. In true familydrama fashion, only love can conquer all (or in this case, bring balance to the Force) as Vader/Anakin and his son Luke’s unbreakable bond of blood champions over good and evil. KEY PLOT TWISTS: Luke Skywalker and the others devise an action-filled plan to rescue Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt.

Endor is a trap! Luke is forced to do battle with Vader in front of Emperor Palpatine. Han and Leia destroy the shield generator while Lando and the Rebel fleet attack the Death Star’s core. Luke is attacked by dark lightning from Palpatine’s hands. Vader saves his son but is mortally wounded in the process, thus ending the epic story of Anakin Skywalker. Luke sees the force spirit of Obi-Wan, Yoda, and the redeemed Anakin Skywalker watching over him.

I manage to find time for football (soccer), which has been my first love since grade school. When I’m gearing towards a competition, I find myself doing Bikram yoga to focus on meditation and flexibility, which best complements my lifestyle.

Filipino youth who take interest in space travel. I’m very honored to have received this blessing, and I will do whatever I can to give back.

COMMUNICATION IS VERY VITAL TO ME. With a lifestyle that’s always on the go, whether traveling by land, by air, or across seas not to mention soon in space, being able to share videos and pictures with my family and friends makes the distance more bearable. With Globe’s Chat Pack, I can stay connected with them through Facebook Messenger, Kakao Talk, Line, WeChat, WhatsApp, and Viber. Social media is also a great platform to express my interests and hobbies with those who follow my lifestyle!

LEARNING IS AN ONGOING PROCESS. I’m presently studying Aviation in Clark, Pampanga. This has opened my eyes to different, new lessons, especially related to being a space man. I also make time for family, friends, and God. These, I believe, have kept me focused towards my goals and motivated me to push further.

I’M EXCITED FOR THE ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME. I look forward to sharing this experience with everyone, especially the aspiring

3 Burning Questions for the 2015-16 NBA Season Brace yourselves. The new NBA season is coming. We know as much as Jon Snow as to what’s going to happen this year but here are some answers highlighting the key storylines already firing us up before the on-court battles begin.

1

Can the Golden State Warriors repeat as champs? At the start of training

year, then the Bay Area can be assured of another strong showing this season. With the core of Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Finals MVP Andre Iguodala intact, the Warriors are well equipped at every position to defend their title. Then again, they enjoyed good fortune with their health and now assume the role of prey instead of predator every time they step on the court. With contenders upgrading their rosters, it is only a matter of time if the Dubs’ exciting brand of basketball can take it all home once again.

2

Which teams have retooled for a better shot at winning it all? The Cleveland Cavaliers are considered the heavy favorites

in the East especially after they outmatched their opponents on the way to the Finals. However, a healthy Chicago Bulls lineup is deep, talented, and motivated enough to contend in the Eastern Conference. Out West, the challengers come in the form of the San Antonio Spurs. Coveted free agents LaMarcus Aldridge and David West strengthened the Texas-based squad that made two out of the last three NBA Finals. The L.A. Clippers also look to soar new heights this season thanks to some much-need bench firepower in Lance Stephenson, Josh Smith and Paul Pierce. Aside from the aforementioned teams, there is always the ever-dangerous Oklahoma City Thunder. Health issues have derailed them in seasons

Return of the Comeback Hooray hoop fans! These NBA superstars are back in action this year: Kevin Durant

Last season wasn’t the same for the Thunder without Durant, who had two surgeries to repair his right foot fracture. WHY HE MATTERS: Before Durant got injured, he was the league’s top scorer during four of the last five seasons.

Paul George

The Indiana Pacers’ star suffered a broken leg during USA Basketball and was lost for the entire season last year. WHY HE MATTERS: The Pacers forward was already putting his name in the conversation of elite wing players along the likes of LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Carmelo Anthony.

Chris Bosh

Blood clots in his lungs forced him to sit out the remainder of the season for the Miami Heat, which was looking solid entering the postseason with the acquisition of Goran Dragic and the emergence of Hassan Whiteside. WHY HE MATTERS: He makes an already talented Miami Heat team a force to be reckoned with in the East.
