Globe Telecom premium postpaid brand Globe Platinum turned over Noah’s Ark classrooms to seven municipalities in Aklan as part of its rehabilitation and rebuilding initiatives to help Yolanda-affected students, families, and communities. Together with Globe Rewards, Globe Platinum partnered with Habitat for Humanity to construct classrooms in the municipalities of New Washington, Libacao, Madalag, Banga, Batan, Altavas, and Balete. Called Noah’s Arks, the classrooms are built to double as evacuation sites complete with toilet, bath, and kitchen facilities. It can withstand earthquakes of 7.0 magnitude and winds of up to 250 kilometers per hour. The construction of the classrooms were funded through the generosity of Globe Platinum customers. Aklan vice governor Gabrielle Calizo-Quimpo, who took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony, expressed gratitude on behalf of the province. “Over 120,000 families in Aklan were affected by Yolanda and most of them are still recovering. Noah’s Ark is a meaningful reminder that they are not alone

and that there are kind-hearted people who are one with them in their effort to rebuild their lives. The people of Aklan, especially the students, are grateful for these Noah’s Arks and what they stand for – hope and strength in the middle of life’s challenges,” said Quimpo. Globe Platinum also recognized the students who participated in the Thank You card design contest as a way of thanking the brand’s generous customers. Globe Platinum director Kaisie del Carmen underscored the role of Globe customers in initiatives that give back to the community. She added, “We are committed to helping build a wonderful Philippines with our sustainable nation-building programs in Aklan and other parts of the nation through the help of our partners and customers.” Globe Platinum’s Noah’s Ark is one of several projects being undertaken by Globe as a development partner for Aklan under the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery.

You can blame a fastpaced lifestyle, or call it early onset #TitaOfManila syndrome, but a day to myself spent in the comforting confines of home is something I crave (and often feel I desperately need). And with the wet weather and rising costs of, well, everything, it seems a staycation is always a good idea. How can’t it be, with essentials like iPad games, Spotify, and HOOQ at your disposal? Ironically, the latest in tech has just made it simpler to get back to basics, and we’ve stuffed this issue with all the many ways you can rejuvenate your energies while staying in your pajamas, fuzzy slippers, optional.

SHEHYEE: on Spotlight

The Spotify Emerge PH winner takes Tagalog rap to a feverish pitch.

FOLLOW, LISTEN, SHARE

Lucky are we to live in the time of Spotify. Shehyee, as part of Globe’s Spotify Emerge group, says he quietly encourages his fans and friends online to support his music. “Pino-post ko sa social media: ‘Hey, I’m part of this! Alam ko yung song ko, nasa YouTube, nasa Internet, pero dahil part ako ng Spotify Emerge, kung gusto ninyong pakinggan yung song ko, dito ninyo na lang pakinggan.” On his dream project, Shehyee doesn’t miss a beat: “I would like to write the first Filipino musical, featuring OPM and rap.”

THE LIST

Spotify Emerge has brought to the fore new and emerging artists across the globe. By listening and sharing music, voters increased their favorite artists’ fanbase and chances to win. Past winners Bastille, Macklemore, and Ryan Lewis have gone on to win not only fans worldwide but also music awards. Here in the Philippines, the Globe Spotify Emerge Awards, from among 10 Filipino artists, were recently concluded, with rap artist Shehyee Ongkiko prevailing as the country’s first Spotify Emerge winner. In the underground rap battle scene, he is well known for his fast and smart mouth. After joining the FlipTop: The First Filipino Rap Battle League or FlipTop Battles, he found the connections he needed, and started working on his album. He describes his writing process as such: “First, [we come up with beats], because we rappers, we rap on beats. I want to hear the beats, then I think of the flow... That is when I think of the lyrics that will go with them.” As he speaks, he closes his eyes and samples some beats and flows – he is in his element, as if the music lulls him into a trance.

MEET MARION

Marion Aunor may be the niece of Philippine superstar Nora Aunor, but she won acclaim based on her own merits, as a singer-songwriter, when her original song “If You Ever Change Your Mind” bagged third place in the 2013 Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs. Soon after, she was signed to Star Records and her self-titled 12-track album was launched. As one of the top 10 artists in the Spotify Emerge competition, Marion feels fortunate to have been able to get her music out there: “Spotify really works, especially because a lot of my fans out there cannot buy my album yet. At least, they are able to support in that way [by listening and sharing].” Notice how Marion’s hair is now much shorter and chic than before? The change is not superficial, she says. “I’m trying to find my niche in OPM.”

Victor Silayan leads the way in coming up with the most tempting meals and a host of other nutrition-related offerings.

Healthy House Philippines might be a baby in business years, but we can already tell it has the makings of something really big. Barely a year in operation, Healthy House has helped a number of Filipinos reach their fitness goals with its customized meal plans and personalized service. It comes at a time when many are starting to see the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle. “We were actually looking for a company that could cater to our needs in terms of food quality and portions, customization, and servicing. And since we didn’t find any that met our standards, we decided to turn it into a business,” shares business manager Victor Silayan. His co-founder friends and fellow athletes, Gerard Sison, Daniel Matsunaga, and Ali Borromeo are all health buffs themselves. They then teamed up with Enderun chef, Jose Gaerlan, and consulted with internationally known model and fitness freak, Abs. Currently, Healthy House offers services for men and women who want to lose, maintain, or gain weight. The process begins with a nutritionist and an initial assessment. Taking factors like your weight, height, and daily activities into consideration, Healthy House then provides you with a meal plan to help you reach your fitness goals.

BAKED TO PERFEC TION REACHING OUT

Victor is eager to see how Globe’s Adblast can help reach their market niche: “The world is shared, and you never know when you’ll need [to tap into] your network.”

If you’re snooping around for an enterprise borne out of the power of social media, then look no further than The Bunny Baker Cafe and Cake Studio. The brainchild of husband and wife team Zach and Aila Yonzon, The Bunny Baker Cafe and Cake Studio started out as a home-based enterprise in 2009. Aila was one hell of a baker, who made cupcakes, cookies, and beautiful fondant cakes. She had no professional training but learned by Googling for instructions and watching tutorials on YouTube. The very first order which Aila filled was a cupcake tower with an Easter theme. She posted it on Facebook with the brand name, The Bunny Baker. That picture paved the way for more orders as people liked their fan page and shared photographs of their works to their networks. Putting up a brick and mortar shop was the next step, which they did after careful thought.

More than a cafe with cakes on the side, Zach and Aila wanted to offer a destination. “The goal of the cafe is that once you enter, you’ll be transported somewhere else. You wouldn’t think that you’re in New Manila,” says Aila. And certainly, The Bunny Baker is different with the mad dashes of whimsy in its decor, peppered with delicious desserts and scrumptious breakfast dishes on the menu. Though barely six months in operation, The Bunny Baker has made waves in the public consciousness because of continuing social media buzz. Its Facebook fan page now counts more than 60,000 fans and it has attracted the attention of malls and wannabefranchisees, who got enamored with their business model.

KEEPING WATCH. PHOTOS: JUN PINZON. WORDS: JING LEJANO.

While all that sounds like any other weight-loss provider out there, the difference lies in how Healthy House promises to follow through with mentorship. Explains Victor, “You are guaranteed unlimited support from us. We offer consultations with coaches and nutritionists and get in touch throughout the week to make sure that you are 100% guided.” Ultimately, the goal is for Healthy House to be the leading nutrition company in the Philippines. It has moved forward with talks of being the nutrition arm for several hospitals and a leading fitness gym. And that’s on top of plans to expand its services to other parts of the Philippines and other countries in Asia and Australia.

Zach and Aila Yonzon of The Bunny Baker use the power of new technology to reach their growing market.

Zach and Aila enrolled in the myBusiness CCTV program. Aila says, “It’s really a crucial product because we can’t always be there. I have LTE, just for the CCTV. We’re always checking: How’s the cafe doing? Is it fully loaded? Do we need to come in?” 9 23

Traveling in Fashion

What’s there to not love about Kim Jones? She is articulate, beautiful, and shares the most amazing photos on her blog for all to appreciate.

Why Travel?

I just really have a hunger to explore and learn. I’m a sponge and I love experiencing new places. I love visiting countries with a rich culture, different from what I’ve seen before. I’m always on the hunt for beautiful landscapes or rich cultural atmospheres.

It’s About The Experience

Majority of the time, I wake up before sunrise to see a city at its most peaceful, when the vendors are setting up, the bread is still baking, the boats are getting back to the harbor, or the city lights are just flickering on. That is when I most

10

enjoy my travels and it is a great way to immerse yourself in the way a town or city operates.

Pinoy Love

All the places I’ve been to are memorable in many different ways. I’ve travelled for many different reasons so it’s hard to pinpoint one because it’s hard to compare one to another. Nothing beats the Philippines though, in terms of hospitality and beaches. To this day, I still believe we have some of the most stunning beaches in the world, and the people are so warm and inviting.

Dream Destinations

I’ve always dreamt of going to Morocco and Israel. Morocco has been a dream of mine before I even owned a passport – it’s a place that held a lot of meaning to me, and it was a goal I set myself from a very young age. Israel would be such an amazing spiritual experience. My husband and I are planning to go in the near future.

Kim’s Top 3 Travel Tips 1 BE PREPARED. By nature, I am a very organized person and it helps me leave a bit more room for adventure when the simple logistics are already planned.

2

TAKE PHOTOS! Go nuts. I always “over-shoot” because when you’re at home reminiscing about that walk in the park you had, it’s nice to have a few reminders.

3

WAKE UP BEFORE SUNRISE. It is my favorite time to see a new town or city. There are less people, you get the first picks of the food, the lines are shorter, and it’s such a peaceful way to travel.

One thing Kim Jones never forgets to bring on her travels is her camera. “I have a lot of fun documenting my travels through visual diaries and it’s become a wonderful discipline to actually capture these places because I want to share it all with my readers,” shares Kim. And by readers, she means the hundreds of thousands of followers she has on Instagram. Here, she lets us on in on why she loves to explore and how she makes the most out of every experience.

PLAY ON When you ask a gamer how the gaming industry has developed into its current state, you’ll probably be told, “It’s always been a big thing.” The mobile gaming industry, in particular, has been around since the 1970s with Donkey Kong Country on the Game Boy and Tetris on mobile phones serving as forefathers to what we know today. And if you were around when mobile phones first insinuated themselves into our lives as the must-have accessory, then you’d be familiar with a little game called Snake that everyone played when Nokia ruled the market. What a big leap to today, with App Store and Google Market Place giving us a mind-boggling array of options to choose from. Thankfully, leaders in technology listened to gamers’ needs to merge online and offline, and made the

move towards integrating gaming into public life. Animated board games, first person shooters, strategy, cross-platform online play, and simulation are just a small part of what’s available to gamers today – not to mention free to play business models that get people hooked on more than one game at a time! The abundance of broadband infrastructure – and online access – is a great example of how people are now allowed to immerse themselves in online worlds even when away from home. The proliferation of smartphones is another because it has made the technology of playing games straight from the Cloud available to those who have it. When a generation weaned on video games raises a new one, there’s no telling how much bigger that list can grow.

WORDS: CHRISTY MONASTRIAL

Gaming has always been a big thing, but here’s how online access and the proliferation of smartphones are getting people even more hooked.

CLASH OF CLANS MANIA

Time to check out some new apps to include in your roster!

At the first grand eyeball of the CoC PH Facebook community, gamers talk about the biggest draws to this epic online gaming app. Turning your village into a mighty fortress, raising a formidable army of barbarians and wizards, and fighting with other clans all over the world might sound just like any other combat strategy game on the surface. But it has to be more than that. Clash of Clans inspire so much more devotion than other apps like it. What exactly is it? Get it straight from Clashers themselves.

Catch the concept of community

The aspect of community also created one of the game’s biggest draws. Why do people form clans? Why do chiefs help other chiefs? “It’s hard to advance if you don’t help other people out,” Mark says. You’ll even hear of some that are kicked out of clans for freely taking assistance without helping others in return.

Play right where you are

Mark Batle, co-founder and admin to the Clash of Clans Philippines Facebook page (a community that has grown to include close to 60,000 gamers), says: “Unlike other online games, you don’t have to play on the PC or need to be at an Internet café. It just clicked.”

Learn life lessons, too! Kill time while playing

Go beyond gaming

Rene, the second top player locally, who is also part of this group, shares, “OFWs like doing it to kill time. Because there’s a time difference, they can play while waiting for their family to come online and make friends in the process.”

Earlier this year, four Pinoy clans – with Pinoy Playhouse being the only one based here in Manila – paid $200 participation fees each and set up the $800 total as prize money for the winning clan’s chosen charity. Cribs Foundation benefitted from that particular tournament, being Pinoy Playhouse’s charity of choice.

A group of people even goes by their clan names, Republica Pinas and Pinoy Playhouse. Eden, who is an accounts executive by day, enumerates all kinds of lessons a Clasher will eventually learn: “Don’t invest too much emotions, don’t expect anything in return, be health-conscious, and of course, matulog rin pag may time.”

Food Talk with Mylene Chung What food photographer Mylene Chung loves most about her job is that it marries two of the things she loves most: eating and capturing images. As co-founder of Pepper.ph, prop stylist at Photokitchen, and teacher at Tablecrafter.com, Mylene is able to explore cooking, food styling, and production design, among other things. Mylene’s top dessert pick is a good bread pudding with vanilla bourbon sauce. “There’s something about milk-soaked bread that makes me feel like all is well with the world. I’m also a sucker for spiked desserts,” she confesses. In taking photos, Mylene likes that easy food porn elements can be incorporated into any shot, be it a kind of syrup or cream poured over a pastry, or sifted confectionary sugar.

Productivity

Organize Your Life

Clutter and mess almost always mean stress. Here are 10 genius ways to get organized and have more time for what’s truly important. YOUR DESK

WORDS: MICH LAGDAMEO. PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES.

Have little catch-alls for small items. Get creative (and put a pop of color!) by using small glass bowls or saucers, ceramic cake or cupcake stands, or even ice trays to hold and display your jewelry, makeup, and office supplies. Wires? Don’t worry. Segregate wires using clips or clamps, and use washi tape to distinguish one charger from another. Go vertical. Aim for a clutter-free desk space. Papers and notes can be magnetized or tacked on DIY boards. Use bookends to corral notebooks and folders. Frame your photos! The more desk surface you see, the more inspired you’ll be to work! Go paperless. Bills, receipts, and other important documents can now be securely sent via email. Rid yourself of those bulky envelopes and help save the environment, too.

YOUR PHONE

Unsubscribe. Those pesky newsletters or spam emails clog up your inbox. Use an online service like unroll. me to make sure your inbox retains only important messages.

20

YOUR CLOSET

Plan ahead. Spend a bit of your Sunday night already curating your OOTDs for the entire week. Designate one hanger each per day and hang in order, so you’re not scrambling to find just the right top or skirt every day. Effortless! Hang right. Can’t bear to cull down your closet? Here’s a trick to help weed out items to give away or sell: Hang everything in your closet backwards (hook facing you). Once you’ve used an item, return it to your cabinet the usual way (hanger hook facing away). After a few months, assess which hangers are facing you—those items need to go, pronto! Repurpose organizers. Those shoe organizers you hang behind doors or inside cabinets? They can hold anything from accessories to underwear to towels and toiletries, too. Get funky with hangers and hooks—they can hold bags, sandals, sunglasses, and scarves.

Use the cloud. Manage your files and make sure you never lose important photos, messages, or contacts by utilizing your free storage space in the Globe Cloud app. List it down. You’re always on your phone anyway—

why not use it to get more organized? Type down notes, to-do lists, and schedule tasks in one catch-all app like Evernote. You can even sync it to your other devices to make sure you’re on point, all the time.

PURSUING A GLOBAL GOAL Globe is a big part of the reason why we are able to do this. Slipstream is one way of getting more information out there about motorsports and racing. You don’t just need to be able to drive. There’s a business side to it, there’s a media side to it – all those combined, you’ll be able to reach your goals. LIFE ONLINE The Internet is a big part of my life. It’s how I stay in

touch with my family, my friends, and socially, with my fans. If ever they’re talking to me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, that’s me personally handling the accounts and you guys are interacting with me. It’s a great way to keep in touch with everyone. FILIPINO PRIDE My lifestyle has changed a lot, obviously. After today, it’s another level again, so it’s a humbling and privileged experience.

I am just really happy that I get this opportunity. Hopefully, on the racetrack and motorsports in general, I’ll be able to make the Philippines proud. INSPIRING THE YOUNG Motorsports is looking bright for us. Hopefully, I open the doors much more for the younger kids coming through. It’s awesome – if you see a little kid doing it, then you know you’re doing a good job.

On June 27, the streets of Bonifacio Global City were screeching with F1 racecar excitement and screaming motorsports fans—all thanks to Slipstream 2.0 h ighlighting Lotus Team F1 Junior driver Marlon Stockinger. Early in the day, Marlon took a group of children from Anima Christi Center to enjoy the Mind Museum. Out on the street, Marlon thrilled the crowd b y driving a baby blue Globe Slipstream jeepney, and showed what he could do with the Lotus-Gravity Charouz Formula Renault 3.5 car. He even made four-year-old Johann Lewis Bernabe’s day when Marlon picked him as his #1 fan!
