St. Cloud Chamber Goes to School for Rebranding

One of the pillars of our Chamber of Commerce is to encourage and engage our educators and students throughout Osceola County.

When the Chamber decided to rebrand for 2025, we approached the School District of Osceola County and were directed to Jenny Mohess, CTE Department Chair of Tohopekaliga High School.

Ms. Mohess gathered approximately 40 students who began to study and probe into the Chamber and St. Cloud as a community. Mark Wells of MW-Ideas served as our guiding consultant with the students and the result was greater than we could have hoped for.

In May 0f 2024, Ms. Mohess’ students submitted conceptual

drawings that proved they were more than equal to the task. After giving them the “green

light” to proceed, Mr. Wells and Dirk Webb, Chamber President attended a live classroom event on September 20 where the participating students presented their logo drafts.

September 30, the Rebranding Committee chose finalists and suggested changes back to the students who responded promptly.

Finally, on January 15, the Chamber Board of Directors voted to approve the design you see on our front cover and above. We congratulate artist Alyson Melo, as her work will be displayed prominently on all Chamber printed information, logo apparel, and digital presentations.

For more than 50 years, the Veterans Memorial Library provided both avid and occasional readers with a source of literature. The library was constructed in 9122 through a partnership between the Woman’s Club of St. Cloud, and the City. In addition to being a source of knowledge, it also symbolized a part of women’s history in the state, as it was designed by the founders of the first all-female architectural firm in Orlando, Florida, Ida Annah Ryan, and Isabel Roberts. The name of the library however, was inspired by the veterans of the Civil War, for whom the town of St. Cloud was originally chartered. Today, the Women’s Club of St. Cloud’s ties to the building continue, through the club’s operation of the museum. In August of 2020, the National Register of Historical Places listed the building as the Veterans Memorial Library and Woman’s Club of St. Cloud Auditorium.

FIRST NATIONAL BANK BUILDING

The First National Bank of St. Cloud was built in 1910, as the only national bank in the county at that time. Built from all local materials from its bricks to its beams, the building was designated with a Masonry Vernacular structure. Although the bank closed in 1917, the building remained home to many organizations in the downtown area including the People’s Bank (1917). In 1992, the St. Cloud Chamber purchased the building, and was able to make restorations using a historic preservation grant awarded in 1997. After being restored the building was also used as a museum for St. Cloud’s history. Today it houses the offices of the St. Cloud Chamber of Commerce, Co-Lab @ the Chamber (new co-working solution) and the St. Cloud Visitors Center. GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC MEMORIAL HALL

Incorporated into what was referred to as the “old hall”, the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall was built in 1914. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), an organization founded in 1866, constructed the building using funds from $8,000 worth of stock certificates. True to the city’s founding in 1909 as “The Soldier City” for Civil War veterans, this 150 by 50 foot building was named the L.L. Mitchell Post #34, after the first Union veteran resident to die in St. Cloud. Since its construction the building has been host to several military and community organizations including the Women’s Relief Corps, Army and Navy Union, Sons and Daughters of Union Veterans, Chautauqua Association, Odd Fellows and Rebekahs, Masons and the Order of the Eastern Star. In 1977, the hall was listed on the National register of Historic Places.

The Sugar Belt Railway Line was built in 1889 by Hamilton Disston, primarily as a way to transport sugar and citrus from his sugar mill between the two towns of Narcoossee and Kissimmee. Although it had not yet been founded, the line ran through what was eventually surveyed as the town of St. Cloud in 1909. St. Cloud’s founding was originally intended with the idea of a community for veterans of the Civil War, thus earning it the nickname “The Soldier City.” To welcome newcomers to the community who arrived by train, and also handle passenger and freight service, a depot building was constructed in 1910. Although the depot was shut down in 1942, the building was not vacant for long. It soon became the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3227 in 1943, which it remains to this day.

NARCOOSSEE

In a world that is always changing, growing, and adapting, the Narcoossee Corridor, the Narcoossee Chapter of Osceola works to share and preserve the history of this area.

It all began in 1883 when the Fell family of Britain purchased 12,640 acres of land in Narcoossee. Sent by his other brother Arthur (who was a knighted member of the British Parliament), Nelson Fell established the community in September of 1884.

The settlement was give the name “Narcoossee” from the Seminole words for “little bear.” Today, the black bear is used as the mascot for the local elementary and middle schools.

The Narcoossee Chapter has worked to maintain the preservation of the 1886 Narcoossee Schoolhouse, which serves as the central historic site along the Narcoossee Road. There, school life during the 1800’s in Central Florida is given visual representation through furnishings, desks, flags, and other types of historical artifacts from the time-period.

The chapter continues to work to share other parts of

history, including Narcoossee founder Nelson Fell’s wife Anne’s close friendship with U.S. President John Quincy Adams’ grandson, Henry Adams, the famous British clipper, Cutty Sark, the Sugar Belt Railroad, & Henry Plant, the first steam-powered submarine, and other facts.

The Narcoossee Chapter of Osceola History welcomes any potential new members and guests to its monthly meetings which take place the first Monday of every months, (provided the date does not fall on a holiday, which places meetings on the first Tuesday), held at the Narcoossee Community Center at 5354 Rambling Road in St. Cloud.

A special thanks goes out to all volunteers and public supporters for fundraising events which contribute to the ongoing success of the chapter and its goal to create a strong sense of pace for this part of Osceola County.

ST. CLOUD POLICE DEPARTMENT

The St. Cloud Police Department is made up of sworn civilian staff who work to serve and protect both residents and visitors with courage, compassion, and integrity. SCPD is an accredited law enforcement agency recognized by the Commission on Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation.

It is the goal of the St. Cloud Police Department to inform citizens and visitors of available resources and services provided by the department. The department is continuously expanding to meet the needs of a growing city.

Officers of SCPD work to provide services such as crime prevention, patrol and investigative services, and community outreach. The St. Cloud Police Department is made up of five operational divisions:

Patrol Operations Division: 24-hour service to the community to proactively prevent and control crime.

Investigative Services Division: investigates all criminal cases, including Criminal Investigations, Street Crimes, and Forensic Crime Scene.

Community Operations Division: specialized teamsunits who provide services to the community beyond patrol and criminal investigations.

Support Services Division: this division is made of non-sworn communication personnel who provide support to the entire police department.

Division of Emergency Management: the coordination office for the municipality’s preparedness, response, and recovery for all disasters.

Whether it is a medical emergency, a fire, or review of building plans, St. Cloud’s Fire Service Organization’s goal is to always help during times of need. SCFR is made up of dedicated and skilled firefighters who are committed to its mission to protect the lives of citizens, visitors, and property through the highest levels of service possible.

St. Cloud Fire and Rescue strives to perform professionally and efficiently to go beyond the public’s expectations. Its vision is to continue to be a premier service provider dedicated to the community. All SCFR units have assigned paramedics and are capable of providing Advanced Life Support. Firefighters are highly trained in up-to-date firefighting techniques and medical care. SCFR’s average response time is 5 minutes and 36 seconds.

Cadet Program:

The St. Cloud Fire Rescue Cadet Program is a youthbased educational program designed as an introduction into a career in fire and emergency medical services (EMS). Cadets participate in local fire competitions against other departments, assist the fire department, and attend training events and meetings geared towards preparing for a career as a firefighter.

Boat Registration

Florida Residents using their vessel in Florida waters must register within 30 days of

purchase or of moving to the state. Boats registered in other states do not need a Florida license if used in Florida less than 90 days.

Property Tax Exemption Information

Our mission is to ensure the fair and equitable assessment of properties within our county while adopting the guidelines set by the Florida Department of Revenue for the purpose of producing the Tax Roll.

Lake Tohopekaliga (Seminole for “we will gather here”), or more commonly known as “Lake Toho”to locals and frequent visitors, is the largest in Osceola County, at 22,700 acres. Known for its great bass fishing and birdwatching, Lake Toho is also the home of Kissimmee Lakefront Park, which features a scenic walking path with benches for relaxing while bird watching or observing the wildlife, such as alligators and turtles. St. Cloud’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is a public entity that was established on May 26, 2005, with the purpose to carry out redevelopment activities. These activities include reducing or eliminating blight, improving tax base, creating and retaining employment opportunities, and encouraging public and private investments in the CRA. The city of St. Cloud has seen an increasing demand to expand its commercial boundaries, making it a center for business and growth. The CRA is subdivided into three districts, Downtown Central, and Gateway. Each district has its own individually identified visions and goals.

The CRA helps to address disinvestment issues and promote redevelopment programs for residential, commercial, and historic properties and businesses within the three districts. We all understand that St. Cloud and Osceola County are growing at an unprecedented rate. Businesses are created and seemingly overnight fade again. The question becomes, “who can you trust when you have a home or commercial project in mind?” Here are just two of our many members who are making a difference in our community.

Britton: “My dad was a

builder. My first semester in college I took entry level “101” building classes. I said, ‘this is fun!’ I now love what I do, working with people and helping them realize a dream in their own projects. Previously I did projects for Disney and locally with Kent Custom Homes. I started Grass Creek Construction here in Florida in 2022 and today, we do Airport Work, Church Work, and tenant improvements. We are currently very active in the Narcoossee Commons plaza near Rummell Road

and Center Lake edition.”

Jordan: “I began my experience in the construction industry with Mattamy Homes. Initially, I worked in the warranty department where I worked my way up to become a builder and later a project manager. My expertise led to a recruitment by Encore Homes, where I contributed to projects that included storefronts and housing for Margaritaville. Over time, I obtained my General Contractor’s license and began managing

remodeling projects independently. In February 2024, I launched my own construction business, drawing on my years of experience and industry connections. I continue to receive referral work, including storm repair projects, from former employers. In 2024, I also acquired a Residential and Commercial Roofing license and am preparing to undertake a major roofing project spanning over 450,000 square feet”

WHAT IS THE COMPETITION LIKE HERE IN THIS AREA?

Britton: “We don’t approach it in a competitive way because there’s so much work out there for everyone. More importantly for me, it’s always about building the relationships whether it’s an individual, the City, the County or any other client. Our approach is to be part of the community, and not to come in, make a buck and then leave. We are part of the schools, the Chamber and several other groups. Yes, you could burn someone for $1,000 but you would be out of business soon.”

Jordan: “My approach is all about serving the local community on a personal level. Other companies may focus on large developments, I specialize in working with clients who want to build or renovate on a single lot, creating something truly tailored to their vision. Many of my remodel clients are looking to personalize their new homes without paying steep upgrade fees for features like kitchens or bathrooms, and they know they can come to me for quality and customization. When it comes to roofing, I’m committed to helping my neighbors with their roofing needs rather than pursuing large, impersonal projects elsewhere. I work with one client at a time, ensuring a high level of service and attention.

Having lived in St. Cloud all my life, most of my work comes from referrals. This work is something I love, and even on the tough days, it feels natural. I’m grateful to run my own business, and I love seeing the excitement clients feel as their projects come to life.”

HOW HAS THE EXPLOSIVE RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL GROWTH HERE IN OSCEOLA EFFECTED YOUR BUSINESS PLANS?

Jordan: “For me, it’s different. All the big builders come in and they produce these huge projects. I serve people who are looking to build or renovate in a very small, single lot. I don’t have the people that are moving in, but people who want to build a house, they look for me. From a remodel side, they might be buying a brandnew home, but they may not want to pay incredible upgrade fees for kitchen or bathrooms, so they may call me to help them.

Where roofing is concerned, I’d rather help out the community doing their roofs instead of chasing work elsewhere. Some roofers just chase the big projects. We work one customer at a time.

I’ve lived in St. Cloud all my life. Most of my work is on a referral basis. When you’re talking about something you do on a daily basis, it comes natural to me. Yes, some days are stressful but hey, I own my own business and I’m doing what I love. Also, I love watching people get excited about their project.”

Britton: “I agree It’s the best working with people to design what they want, how they vision it, and still stay within their budget. It’s a conversation, not a transaction. In the long run, it’s the relationship that you value. I haven’t advertised once. Because of the growth that’s happening, we don’t have to do really any advertising and our name gets shared around with other people and architects. Often because we focus on the individual we are able to help in ways some of the

larger firms are not able to do.”

Jordan: “Helping clients understand the process is incredibly rewarding, though it sometimes requires having honest, realistic conversations. Local codes or ordinances may limit what they can do, or certain design choices might not fit within their budget. However, we’ve found there are often multiple ways to achieve their goals, and we work together to find the best solution.”

HOW HAS THE CHAMBER HELPED YOU WITH YOUR BUSINESS?

Jordan: “We’re working to deepen our community involvement by sponsoring and participating in events with the Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations. Through the Chamber, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with other small businesses in similar fields, as well as support companies I can collaborate with and assist in return.”

Britton: “Two years ago, I came to the Chamber on advice from my mentor. They can incorporate you into the community if you let them. You can’t really say you are part of the community without being part of the Chamber as a business owner. Through the Chamber I get to find out who is behind an

event, who are the ‘movers and shakers’, and how I can be part of it. We are truly being a part of the community and not just showing up.”

Jordan: “Honestly, I wish I’d jumped in sooner and got more involved from day one. Over time, we started asking each other, ‘How can I help the Chamber, and how can the Chamber help me?’ That simple shift really opened doors. It’s been a wonderful asset for my business and has connected me with so many great people in the community.”

GREAT FLORIDA BIRDING TRAIL: Kissimmee Prairie Preserve

Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail is a 2,000 mile-long collection of more than 500 locations in the U.S. state of Florida where the state’s bird habitats are protected. The trail promotes birdwatching, environmental education, and ecotourism. Kissimmee Prairie is just an hour and a half south of St. Cloud and is part of the Everglades headwaters. The rodeo remains a celebrated annual event, so integral to the community that Rodeo Day—a public school holiday—takes place every February in its honor. The current Silver Spurs Arena, opened in 2003, bears the rodeo’s name and has since hosted a wide variety of events including concerts, comedy shows, professional and amateur sports, and political rallies.

WORLD-CLASS EVENTS

A highlight on OHP’s calendar is Mecum Kissimmee, “The World’s Largest Collector Car Auction.” Held every January, the event takes over the entire property and has called OHP home for two decades. In 2025, Mecum featured approximately 4,500 cars and reported $226 million in sales, drawing car enthusiasts from around the globe.

HOME TO PRO AND AMATEUR SPORTS

OHP also serves as a hub for professional and amateur sports. It is the year-round training home for MLS’s Orlando City SC and hosts Orlando City B’s home games at the Osceola County Stadium. In 2023, the Osceola Magic, NBA G-League affiliate of the Orlando Magic, began

playing at Silver Spurs Arena, adding 24 events per year to the calendar.

OHP is also a proud host of numerous multiday amateur athletic events, including cheerleading, gymnastics, jiu-jitsu, and the FHSAA Wrestling State Championships, which brings thousands of student-athletes and families to the area each year.

For over 80 years, the Osceola County Fair has taken place on OHP’s festival grounds, celebrating the agricultural, historical, and cultural traditions of the community with rides, food, and family-friendly fun.

DOWNTOWN MURALS

Walking around Downtown St. Cloud visitors can see the town’s history painted across Main Street, literally.

In the mid 2000’s the St. Cloud Main Street Program’s Design Committee began putting together the concept of creating historic downtown murals. Although there are many murals that now cover the buildings of the downtown area, the process of creating them started off slowly.

“It was quite a process to put together the concept of what we wanted, and what we wanted to see” Paula Stark, Executive Director the St. Cloud Main Street Program, said. Stark said she and the other members of the Design Committee came up with a few ideas for the murals that individual artists could choose from. The artists in turn created and presented renderings to the commit-

tee to choose from.

“There are multiple artists who have done the murals downtown,” Stark said. “Juliana Davidson has done several of the murals, and she is here locally. Al Pepin has done at least two of them and we have various other artists who have done them along the way.”

Slowly, overtime Stark said more murals have been added to the downtown area, including a few restorations over the years due to fading and age. The murals have become a popular tourist attraction for visitors to take photos over the years. One of the most popular, Stark said, is a mural located on the side of Island Cloud Grill.

“It is one of the ones that gets the most photography because it says ‘St. Cloud’ and people want their picture taken in front of it,” Stark said. “Almost all them are all historically based with some significance from the past.”

This includes the popular St. Cloud mural, which depicts several historic scenes from the town’s history inside the letters. Other murals include historic depictions of “Hamilton Disston’s SugarCane Mill”, “The Great Fire of 1917”, “Dredging the Canal Between Lake Tohopekaliga and East Lake Tohopekaliga”, and “Amaryllis Minerva,” the official city flower.

Not only can visitors spot these on a downtown stroll, Stark said, but they can also take a historic tour using a brochure containing a map of each mural’s location.

“People can do a historic walking tour on their own if they choose to, and then we also offer historic tours at the monthly markets on Wednesday nights,” Stark said.

The murals are featured not only on their guided walking historic tours, but also their historic ghost tours Stark said. Their depictions not only offer chances for photos, but also talking points on the city’s history. Although the murals are only one of many attractions in the city, Stark said they are part of keeping the city’s history alive.

SILVER SPURS RODEO

Twice a year, Osceola County becomes cowboy country, as rodeo competitors and fans from across the nation arrive for the Silver Spurs Rodeo and all the events that come with it. This is the largest rodeo east of the Mississippi, and it offers a prize purse of $50,000. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) ranks the Silver Spurs Rodeo among the top 50 events that it sanctions annually. On the second and third weekends in February and the first weekend in June of each year, the Silver Spurs Parade kicks-off the excitement in Historic Downtown St. Cloud. The Miss Silver Spurs Court and rodeo queens from across the nation join the Silver Spurs Riding Club in this celebration featuring grand marshals and other honorees in the parade procession.

The rodeo features all seven traditional rodeo events, and rodeo clowns and the fast Silver Spurs Quadrille team entertain show-goers between the monster-bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, tiedown roping, and barrel racing. The Silver Spurs Rodeo is well

known as one of the best indoor rodeos in the PRCA, but it had humble beginnings. In 1941, ranchers from across Osceola County gathered together in Tallahassee, Florida, for the inaugural parade of Governor Spessard Holland. They rode in the parade together and gained statewide recognition, so in May of that year, they formed the Silver Spurs Riding Club, and they hosted their first rodeo at the end of their first year. In 1949, they broke ground on the Silver Spurs Rodeo Arena, and a grand tradition was born in Osceola County.

The Osceola Heritage Park/Silver Spurs Arena of today is a state-ofthe-art indoor facility that boasts 8,300 seats and 12 luxury skyboxes in a climate-controlled environment hosting rodeos, as well as sporting events, concerts, and more; and the Silver Spurs Riding Club has over 300 members.

ST. CLOUD’S WOMAN’S CLUB

Formed in 1910, the St. Cloud Woman’s Club began meeting in what is today the St. Cloud Heritage Museum and Veterans Memorial Library. Later, in 1949, the Woman’s Club building was erected next door to accommodate the club’s growing membership. The building not only was a place to hold meetings, but also included a stage and 100 seats to allow the club to put on plays.

In 1999, the Woman’s Club decided that they could no longer maintain both buildings, and entered into an agreement resulting in the City of St. Cloud, eventually resulting in the city’s purchases of both buildings in 2002. Under the terms of the agreement, the club is able to hold two meetings per month in the Woman’s Club building, and the other building is used for the general public to rent out for performances, weddings, and other large gatherings.

Every winter, on the first weekend of December, experience the the magic of the Christmas season in Historic Downtown St. Cloud. Festival foods, crafts, vendors, a classic car show, and Christmas Parade kick off the holiday season, and bring thousands to the downtown area. For two whole days, over 120 vendors show off their crafts, talents, and culinary arts for the entire family to enjoy. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. both days and ends at 4:30 p.m.

ST. CLOUD CHAMBER CHRISTMAS PARADE:

It’s not the holidays without a good-old fashioned parade. The parade kicks off the first day of the Holiday Festival with over 100 floats, marching bands, and other performances for attendees to

enjoy. This event features Santa, who makes time out of his busy schedule to visit the residents of Osceola County. This parade is described as a “must see” for all!

This display of classic cars includes automobiles from 1979 and earlier between 9th and 10th Street, just in front of City Hall. Prizes are awarded beginning at 3:00 p.m., and all proceeds benefit the children of Help Now Osceola. In addition, toys are gifted to the children who reside in this local domestic shelter. Doodle Bugs Chalk Art From Saturday-Sunday of the festival, children of all ages are invited to participate in the Doodle Bugs Chalk Art. Side-walk chalk is provided but attendees are always welcome to bring their own.
