On behalf of the entire membership of the Perry Chamber of Commerce, our Board of Directors, and the Perry community, I would like to personally welcome you to Perry. If it weren’t for having flat feet, Gus Edwin George Malzahn may have lived a much different life. Despite his best efforts to join the United States military to serve his country in World War II, Ed found himself helping in a different way. After earning a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Oklahoma A&M College, now Oklahoma State University, he was teaching a machining class when something, more accurately, someone special caught his eye. A student named Mary Corneil was in that class.

One thing led to another and the two got married just a couple years later and settled down back in Ed’s hometown. They had a few kids and started their lives. Little did they know it at the time, but this community would become a major part of the newly formed Malzahn family; Ed and Mary, from Perry, Oklahoma.

His grandfather, Charlie, owned a blacksmith shop where Ed worked. Day after day he would see a plumber hand-digging ditches to install pipes from the street to the home. He would think about how hard that had to be and there must be a better way. He was right. There is a better way.

His innovative spirit and engineering know-how took over and led him to the invention of the world’s first service line trencher in 1949, later to be named the Ditch Witch model DWP. Over the coming years, the Malzahns would experience a whirlwind of business success, allowing them to support the town they loved so much in ways never imagined.

They’d always been active in the First Presbyterian Church in Perry. Mary was the director of the choir for nearly 25

years and loved singing. Ed taught Sunday School for more than 50 years. If the doors to the church were open, Ed and Mary were there, with their children, Don, Pam and Leasa, serving in whatever role they could.

They ate breakfast at a local staple of the community, The Kumback Café every Saturday. They were at pancakes feeds, parades, celebrations and any other reason Perry citizens could get together. Perry and its people were family.

Mary had an affinity toward animals in general, but “white cows” specifically. She started M&M Charolais Ranch in 1968 and managed a successful operation. She was known to spend a couple hours with her employees and get in the truck every morning to help feed, not to supervise, but to do whatever she could, including but not limited to hopping out and opening gates between pastures. Mary also raised llamas, emu, turkeys, quail and numerous other animals, but it was the cattle that made it to the top of her list.

Ed worked in the underground construction industry and made it abundantly clear that Mary was the rancher. Folks often thought M&M stood for Malzahn and Malzahn, but make no mistake about it, the first M was for Mary.

As the underground construction industry took off, so did the celebrity of Ed and Mary, but that didn’t change who they were or what was important to them. They became more involved with the Chamber of Commerce and supporting local initiatives with anonymously (in theory) provided funds. Uncomfortable in the unwanted spotlight, Ed and Mary would make yearly contributions to every church in Perry,

never signing their names, in addition to providing a crisp $50 bill to every graduating senior in Noble County for nearly 20 years simply because everyone had to buy their own cap and gown for graduation. It was important to the Ed and Mary that everyone was able to participate.

As the couple’s passion for Perry continued to grow, so did the support. They established the Malzahn Family Affiliated Fund in 1992, primarily to support the City of Perry, the Noble County Family YMCA and Perry Public Schools, which were all identified as areas for the city to shine. Rather than build a fitness center and café on the Ditch Witch campus, Ed and Mary decided Perry would be better served by helping fund a community YMCA and supporting local restaurants with employee traffic. They helped renovate the hospital and jail, donated for the Cherokee Strip Museum and The Heritage Center, provided funding for new school construction, and the list goes on.

After Mary passed in 2011 and Ed in 2015, The Charles Machine Works, Inc. was sold to The Toro Company in 2019, with the proceeds opening many, many doors for the MFAF to make an impact to Perry and the surrounding communities. The fund provides thousands of dollars in annual scholarship funds, continues to support the YMCA, the City of Perry and the school system.

Ed and Mary were always looking for a better way to do something, a better way to support their families, and better life for their employees and a better Perry, Oklahoma. Quick to listen and slow to speak, Ed and Mary found those answers through the MFAF.

History of Perry

The land of “many dead men” or “Mendota,” as the Native Americans called it, Perry was once the site of a bloody battle, long before it became part of America. The empty prairie land would one day be coveted homestead in the Cherokee Outlet land run of September 16, 1893. The Perry federal land office and post office was established about a mile north of what was the Wharton railroad depot to prepare for the land run. It was named after J. A. Perry, a man sent by the federal government to lay out the towns.

The Cherokee Outlet Land Run was said to have been started early by a nervous soldier who accidentally discharged his gun at 11:55 a.m. instead

of noon as planned. No matter, the race was on as soon as hopefuls heard that early gunfire ring out. The fourth and largest of Oklahoma’s five land runs saw more than 100,000 pioneers racing by horse, wagon, and on foot for 40,000 homesteads and town lots. Not only were there ambitious folks from all over the United States in this run, but immigrants from many foreign countries took part as well. They arrived by train, coach, horse, wagon, and their own two feet for the opportunity of a lifetime.

“HELL’S HALF ACRE”

Opportunists wasted no time in setting up homestead that first Sep-

tember day, with lumber sent ahead by rail. By late afternoon, there was even a fully functional saloon serving thirsty travelers thirty-eight thousand glasses of one-dollar beer. An estimated ninety thousand heads rested in forty thousand tents in “Hell’s Half Acre” that night, and about 25,000 people and one hundred and ten saloons and gambling establishments were thriving by September 20, 1893, when the town of Perry, Oklahoma was incorporated.

The more disreputable businesses and the chaotic, wild-west frontier culture tried to dig in its heels during those early days in Perry, until law and order prevailed. Entertaining tales of rabble-rousing, gambling, drinking,

fighting, and other criminal mischief are shared of that time, but in the end, the majority of settlers were family men who wanted to start a good life. A telephone line was constructed from Perry to Wharton before the year was over.

AN HONORABLE LEGACY

Perry has been the hometown of great people, such as Thomas H. Doyle, attorney, politician, judge, Territorial congressman, U.S. congressman, and member of Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals; Governor Henry S. Johnston; Sonic President Marvin Jirous; La Vern E. Weber, U.S. Army Lieutenant General and Chief of the National Guard Bureau; and Robert Galbreath, Jr., who started the Perry Evening Democrat and discovered the Glenn Pool Oil Reserve. In 1948, Ed Malzahn began the Ditch Witch Company in Perry, and it still thrives today continuing to be the largest employer in Noble County.

Pro football players Ralph Foster and Billy Pricer; pro wrestler and boxer Danny Hodge; most sought after

dog trainers in America today and the Founder and CEo of Greatest American Dog Trainers as well as the host of Animal Planet’s My Big Fat Pet Makeover; MMA fighter and pro wrestler Jake Hager; and freestyle wrestling Olympic gold medalist Jack van Bebber were also from Perry. Sharron Miller, Emmy Award and Directors Guild of America Award winning television producer, director, and writer and silent film star Buster Keaton called Perry home.

Both the Dalton and Doolin gangs have made history here, and the lady bandit, Little Britches, lived in Perry for a time in 1895.

Notorious Oklahoma City bomber, Timothy McVeigh, was apprehended only 90 minutes after the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 and wounding 800 more. He was driving near Perry on I-35 in Noble County. He was stopped by Charles J. Hanger, an Oklahoma State Trooper, for having no license plate on his car and was found to have an unregistered, loaded gun on him. He was booked into the Noble County Jail in Perry before anyone

even knew who he really was or what he had done, leading to his easy arrest by Federal Agents. Trooper Hanger went on to become Sheriff of Noble County and is still considered a national hero.

Travis Brorsen, one of the most sought after dog trainers in the U.S., currently hosts the series, “My Big Fat Pet Makeover” on the Animal Planet Channel. He and his family are from Perry. A speaker, an author, and a pet expert, Travis is Founder and CEO of Greatest American Dog Trainers.

1965 Perry graduate, Dr. John Chaffin is a cardiovascular surgeon with the Cardiovascular Physicians at Integris Heart Hospital. He is board certified in thoracic surgery and attended OU School of Medicine. His father was Everett Chaffin, a Perry Ag teacher for years.

The Perry, Oklahoma of today is a growing, welcoming community of 4,500 people. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy entertainment for all ages, fine dining to suit all tastes, and a wide variety of businesses and shopping experiences.

WITCH MUSEUM

Built shortly after the Land Run of 1893 as the Charles Machine Works, a Ditch Witch manufacturer, the building is now a museum showcasing the history of Ditch Witch equipment and invention. CHEROKEE STRIP MUSEUM AND ROSE HILL SCHOOL

Museum on 5 acres showcasing the fascinating history of the Cherokee Outlet land and treaty with a wide variety of exhibits including a history of Sonic Drive-In Restaurants. Features festivals and educational events, including award winning program, “A Day at Rose Hill School.”

KEMNITZ SINCLAIR STATION

Fill up with gas and nostalgia at the longest filling station in continuous operation in Oklahoma. It was built in 1937 by Mid-Continental Petroleum and continues to serve locals and travelers alike.

Cherokee Strip Museum

GO BACK IN TIME

Perry’s Cherokee Strip Museum is a remarkable historical complex located on five acres of land including indoor and outdoor exhibits, a oneroom schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, a gift shop, and beautiful picnic areas on shaded grounds. The people and events that made up the incredible history of the Cherokee Outlet are featured in exhibits, galleries, and displays that educate, fascinate, and intrigue visitors of all ages.

Guests enjoy the walk to Rose Hill School over a quaint wooden bridge across a shallow creek that recalls school trips from days of old. The blacksmith shop includes a live demonstration on special Saturdays four or five times a year.

Each year on the first Saturday in August, the museum has “Family Day.”

There are gunfighters, rope makers, cake walks, mini Rose Hill School Sessions, and other old fashioned games and entertainment.

The museum’s newest exhibit is a walkthrough of the history of the Sonic Drive-In Restaurant. Co-Founder Marvin Jirous grew up in Perry, and his life story is displayed along the walls of this entertaining trip through time. On display are original Sonic menu boards, Sonic uniforms, and even a pair of Sonic roller skates, worn by the car hops.

The Cherokee Strip Museum was built in 1968 by the Cherokee Strip Historical Society through a joint effort with the State of Oklahoma to house a growing collection of materials that were running out of room being stored in the basement of the Carne-

gie Library. The museum is currently operated by the Oklahoma Historical Society with the help of a local CSHS advisory board and volunteers. The Cherokee Strip Historical Society also operates the museum gift store and the award winning educational program, “A Day at Rose Hill School.”

Harry Hughes

VISIONARY

A “THANK YOU” FROM PERRY

Harry Hughes was born in Lela, Oklahoma in 1929. At an early age, he began working hard to support his family, and he never stopped. After taking a job at Loyd Jones Well Service as a deckhand, Harry moved to Perry.

About a year later, he started working for Mr. Cooper in the auto body and radiator repair business. It was there that he met the love of his life, Mabel Vanhoesen. He married Mabel, on September 8th, 1950. Together they purchased and operated Perry Paint and Body for 29 years. Wherever Harry was, whatever he did, Mabel was right there working with him. Their love was described as “a fairytale,” as they lived a life of adventure and built a beautiful family together. They were married 71 years until Harry’s death on September 30th in 2021. Harry adored his family, his three children: Beverly Coldiron, Rosanna Behara, and Harry “Bub” Hughes, Jr. as well as too many other family members and friends to list.

Harry loved to fish, and even in his free time, he was assisting his friends on fishing trips. He loved to collect historical memorabilia and antiques. He once donated a 1911 wooden Fort Worth oil field spudder to the Oklahoma Historical Society. He and his wife, Mabel, also loved to travel, and took friends and family with them all over the world, but his greatest love, after his family, seemed to be the people and the city of Perry, Oklahoma.

Repeatedly, Harry has been called a “jack of all trades” because of his successes in so many different industries. When he was young, he worked as a farmhand, a mechanic, and for a well service company. He was a volunteer fireman for more than 20 years because he saw it as his civic duty.

Harry Hughes was a humble man who was not inclined to brag about his many accomplishments. However, it isn’t hard to find out about him, because

the people of Perry never stop praising him. This kind, generous, hardworking, adventurous, family man gifted this town with a wealth of homes, business es, and assistance; and his legacy will live on in Perry forever.

When Harry discovered that people in Perry needed better houses to live in, he took it upon himself to solve the problem. He partnered with friends, lumberers, electricians, furniture makers, plumbers, and builders. He purchased buildings made of good materials, and he tore them down to use them to make more houses and office buildings. He worked with young families to help them make their down payments by giving them the equipment needed to help build their homes for reduced costs.

Just a few examples of Perry’s view of Harry Hughes:

“Harry was said to be the humblest man anyone knew. He would rarely talk of his accomplishments even though there were several. He was known to love and support Perry and would always brag about his incredible community.”

“If help was needed, he was there. If there was work to be done, he was there.”

“When you think about Harry, you don’t think quiet and reserved. He was bold, outspoken, and a leader to the entire family. He was hilarious and ornery but had the biggest servant heart. He never met a man he didn’t like, and he loved bigger than anyone.”

“If there was a synonym for Harry Hughes, it would be “hard work,” no doubt. Second in line would be “selfless.”

AN INCREDIBLE LEGACY

1950s: Harry owned and operated Perry Paint and Body Shop at 721 Cedar Street.

1960s: Harry purchased the St. Louis Hotel from the American Legion and tore the building down to build several

at least one business building from the brick and used lumber.

Harry and Harold Sorrell owned and operated the Perry Home Center.

Harry and Dr. Bill Busby, a dentist, developed the Hughes Busby Housing Addition in north Perry on the south side of the Perry Golf and Country Club. This is where Harry built his own home.

1970s: Harry (Hughes), Harry Elwell, and Ted Jerome developed the Quail Creek and Lake View Housing Additions on the east side of the Perry Golf and Country Club.

Harry opened Three Sands Oil Company’s first field office, and Harry and Robert Kasper produced wells near Nowata. One of Three Sands’ first Noble County wells was the Nelson #1, west of Perry.

Harry was congratulated by the late Milo Watson in his El Toro column for the development of a mini-golf course which was located on Fifteenth Street.

1980s: Harry helped develop the Hughes-Sorrell Addition north and east of Perry.

1990s: Harry developed the Fairway Addition on the west side of the Perry Golf and Country Club.

The Hillcrest Apartments at 14th and Locust Streets were builts by Harry, Jim Dolezal, Steward Smith, and Bob Kasper.

The Pack n Sack Storage Sheds on north Highway 77 were built by Harry and Willie Sheets.

Harry also served on the board of directors at the Perry Golf and Country Club, and the board of directors of Lake McMurtry.

In 2021, Perry had its 100th wrestling season. With 43 state championships, 20 dual state championships, and 4 academic state titles, Perry can boast a total of 67 state championships. Perry’s wrestlers include 176 individual state champions, including famed

professional wrestler, boxer, and silver-medal Olympian Danny Hodge and All-Americans Leonard Shelton, Rex Edgar, and Gordon Roesler.

The National Federation of High School Sports lists Perry as having won more state wrestling titles than any other team in the entire

nation. In May of 2016, the Perry Wrestling Foundation erected the Perry Wrestling Monument Park to honor and celebrate the heritage and history of the wrestling program and its athletes.

The park sits on the square in downtown Perry at 615 Delaware.

The entrance is marked by an arch inscribed with “Perry Wrestling Monument Park.” As visitors enter the park, they are greeted by two giant bronze sculptures of wrestling greats Danny Hodge and Jack Van Bebber created by local sculptor Jim Franklin. Behind the sculptures are a series

of large granite slabs which list the names of Perry’s champions over the years. As Perry’s success continues, new names are continually added.

CAMP FIRE OF PERRY and CAMP TAN DA KO A Natural Partnership

For 65 years, as of this coming Summer, the Camp Fire Youth of Perry have been enjoying the beauty of Camp Tan Da Ko. This beautiful park and lakefront has provided places for campfires, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and learning for Camp Fire Youth in Perry.

“They do classes of science, tan crafts, camp skills, sports games, and waterfront - depending on their age - everyone could canoe and fish, but they have to be in the oldest group in order to go out in the kayaks,” explained Betty Dillon, a long-time leader of Perry’s Camp Fire organization and supporter of Camp Tan Da Ko since 1988.

Camp Tan Da Ko started as just a place to set up tents or sleep under the stars in 1957. As it gained popularity, more and more areas were cleared for camping, and a building was constructed with a kitchen, a chapel, and a storm shelter, as well as a wooden “craft shack” with pop-open windows. Every part of the resources at the camp were built by volunteers.

Over the decades, Camp Tan Da Ko has become a beloved escape for both locals and visitors to Perry.

The camp also features a walking trail, picnic tables, restrooms, and shade trees. Plans are underway to make improvements and add new buildings to the camp. Camp Tan Da Ko is located on the south side of CCC Lake in Perry.

“In November, we went out to camp, and we had what we called an ‘Out For A Day,’’ explained Dillon. “In our threehour time, we learned all about flag etiquette. We did a whole afternoon of hands-on learning, and then we performed a flag retirement service and ceremony.”

“The founders of Camp Fire felt they could learn survival skills and how to survive the outdoors from Indian traditions and the Indian ways,” added Dillon.

CCC LAKE

Enjoy boating, fishing, covered picnic areas, grills, a playground, and a rustic kitchen at this Civilian Conservation Corps Lake and Park. Visitors may also make use of the amphitheater and gazebos. Visitors to CCC Lake can experience the new walking trail which was completed in 2019. This 1.1 mile, ADA compliant walking trail with two trailheads was once an equestrian trail. Today, the trail has been fully restored for walkers only with a wide crushed asphalt surface. No horses or motorized vehicles are allowed. The trail has two pet waste stations and connects to the park road for an additional 2 miles of walking experience. The gate at 1520 South 4th Street (Hwy 86) is open from dawn to dusk for walkers to enjoy the serene, quiet environment.

LEO PARK

The American Quarter Horse Association’s historical marker at the statue of Leo in Leo Park tells of an incredible race horse who retired to become the top Broodmare sire. 14 of his daughters were champions, including Miss Pawhuska. Leo park has several tennis courts, swing sets, playground equipment, covered pavilion and restrooms. The memorial was dedicated in September 1996, and is located at 2nd Street and Cedar Road.

Jirous grew up on a farm southeast of Perry to parents from Eastern Europe and Czechoslovakia. His father worked the family farm and drove a taxi cab. Young Marvin Jirous worked at the M&W Grocery after school and on weekends. His father taught him integrity and American values.

When Troy Smith and Charlie Pappe changed the name of the drive-in restaurant chain from “Top Hat” to “Sonic,” they heard from one of their equipment suppliers about a hard

working couple running the Dairy Boy in Fairview. Marvin Jirous and his wife, Barbara, were asked to become partners in opening a new Sonic. In 1962, they opened their first Sonic in Alva, Oklahoma with Charlie Pappe.

partly overshadowed by the death of their dear friend, Charlie Pappe, who had a massive heart attack and passed away at just 51 years of age.

At the time, Sonic was just a small kitchen and work area attached to canopies over 22 parking spaces, pointof-sale menu boards, and intercoms, based on a design Charlie Pappe had developed. Jirous and his wife worked hard to learn every aspect of running the business with accounting lessons from Pappe and kept the costs low. Within three years, they had part ownership in six Sonics. Their success was

Another of Charlie Pappe’s recruits to the Sonic family was Matt Kinslow of Seminole County. Kinslow and Jirous were close friends. In 1967, Sonic founder Troy Smith asked them both to join him at Sonic headquarters to run the Sonic supply. They would manage the equipment packages and the training for each new Sonic drive-in restaurant. That meant that for the next several years, Jirous spent Mondays in Alva, Tuesdays in Blackwell, Wednesdays in Ponca City, and Thursdays through Sundays traveling across western Oklahoma supervising installations and training.

New Sonics began opening at an increased rate from five in 1968 to nine in 1969. There were 16 new Sonics in 1971 and 28 in 1972. The growth created a need for a new corporate

structure. In 1973, Sonic Industries was born. It included five company-owned restaurants, the equipment operation, and ownership of the franchising operation. Troy Smith was Chairman of the Board, and Marvin Jirous was now President of the fastest growing quick service restaurant chain in the United States. Sonic opened 700 stores in two years.

Jirous served as Sonic President from 1974 to 1980 driving expansion with his “option book.” The option book was where decisions were made on who got a franchise and where each franchise would be located. It was a balancing act between protecting and supporting existing franchisees and expanding into new territories in a sustainable way.

Jirous also added the “Standard Sonic Menu” but allowed innovation giving all Sonics the option to add a breakfast menu. He increased royalty payments to create a common advertising fund. The first advertising campaign was built around a Beach Boys musical theme. The next was inspired by the television show “Happy Days.”

As the pace of expansion sped up, Sonic gained national attention. By 1978, there were more than 1,000 Sonics across 20 states. Corporate income grew from $246,000 in 1974 to $17.3 million in 1977.

When a national recession hit in the late 1970s, Marvin Jirous stepped down as corporate President to rescue his own Sonic franchises. He focused on expanding his network and looking for investment opportunities. Ultimately, the number of Sonics owned by or associated with Marvin and Barbara Jirous grew to 85.

Marvin Jirous remained a farm boy at heart. He still owns his family’s farm southeast of Perry. He and his son bought additional farms as well. On one of those farms, drillers found an extension of the Ames Hole. Jirous, ever the entrepreneur, also invested in and sold banks to MidFirst Bank.

The Jirous’ successes have been generously shared over the years. They sponsored a number of exhibits at the Oklahoma History Center, including Launch to Landing: Oklahomans and Space. They have enjoyed giving to OETA, where they are regularly thanked on air for being “Producers.” They served as founding partners of the Perry Alumni Association, and they support the Cherokee Strip Museum, dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the story of Perry, right back where their story started.

The oldest continuing cafe in Oklahoma can also boast the same name and the same location since May 3, 1926. Perry’s historic Kumback Cafe is a charming, warm reminder of days past. Down-home, country cookinwwg aroma fills the air as you walk through the antique door into the cozy, inviting restaurant. The walls are decorated with images of Noble County and Perry’s past. Bar stools line the counter at the front, and comfortable tables surround the rest of the space. This historic landmark has become a recognizable vestige of Oklahoma history. In 1940, then owner Eddie Parker replaced the small, white stucco building that was the home of the cafe with the one that exists now. The restaurant has only ever been owned by two families. In 1973, former employee of the cafe, Tony Macias, purchased the Kumback, and he and his wife, Marilee, made it what it is today. In 1999 a marquee was added to the front of the building, and its facade was updated with marble and burgundy tile.

The Kumback Cafe has been in continuous operation for nearly 100 years, only closing for a time during the pandemic. Its delicious food, warm, friendly atmosphere, and value for its history will keep it a local favorite for years to come.

Perry’s Senior Citizens Center was started in the 1960s by a group of active seniors who wanted a place to gather and socialize. From meeting in a church to a little rented space to the building donated by the Perry Ministerial Alliance where the center is today, the Senior Citizens Center has been open to anyone ages 50 and over for many decades. The center has a wide range of games and activities constantly going on. Participants don’t pay any fees or join any membership. The center is just open all week to seniors who would like to come and be active and enjoy themselves. There are games, internet, newspapers, books, and complimentary coffee and cookies. Every day at 1:00 p.m. there is a group activity, such as a pitch game or another card game. There is always a puzzle out to be worked on. Tuesdays and Thursdays, the seniors play pitch at the center. On Wednesdays, they have a bingo game. On Friday mornings, they practice painting and create the

art that covers the colorful center walls, and on the 4th Monday of the month, there is an open mic music night. Seniors from all over come to the center to perform country music or dance or just listen and have fun.

“We play games, and I try to encourage people to meet their friends down here,” said Michelle McCrary, director of the Senior Citizens Center. “Drink my coffee, and let me clean up after. We’d love to have you. This is yours. It’s your place.”

“The seniors that come here stay pretty active,” added McCrary. “A body in motion stays in motion. If I can get somebody into the door, they’ll come back.”

The Perry Senior Citizens Center is funded by the United Fund, the City of Perry, and generous donations from Perry citizens. Since its inception, it has helped train some of the Airmen of WWII in the Fairchild PT-19 and Boeing PT-17 Stearman. The Noble Army Air eld was deactivated at the drawdown of WWII and would eventually become the Perry Municipal Airport. Holding to its original purpose, the Perry Municipal Airport continues to provide the military with the runway needed to help train future Air Force pilots in the T-6 Texan II from Vance Air Force Base in Enid, OK.

As a part of the National Airspace System, we are a joint e ort between the City of Perry, Federal Aviation Administration and Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission with the common goal to serve the users of the United States National Airspace System, both military and civilian. We provide 24 hour fuel 7 days a week, 365 days a year and services to travelers who are landing here to visit the City of Perry, neighboring towns and townships or those who are just passing through.

We have 5 city owned hangars and 16 privately owned hangars that are home to 2 aerial application businesses and a total of 26 based aircraft.

Our airport also provides indirect support for Emergency Medical Services by providing the runway and fuel needed for Life Flight Aircraft to operate should anyone in our city need moved rapidly to another hospital for specialized medical attention.

Cherokee Strip Riding Club

The Cherokee Strip Riding Club was established over 50 years ago in Perry, Oklahoma for the purpose of bringing together people and families who are interested in horseback riding and horse activities. It is a riding club for all to learn and teach the art of horsemanship, proper care, love and admiration of the horse. The secondary purpose of the club is to provide positivew family entertainment at a cost affordable to all members of the community. The CSRC is host to over 30 events yearly including playdays, junior rodeos, trail rides, ranch rodeos, horsemanship clinics, and an annual KPRA/IPRA rodeo.

Trout Fishing Tournament

Perry is one of eight designated trout fishing areas in Oklahoma and one of three lakes that offer trout fishing. Pack up the family and enjoy a morning of trout fishing at CCC Lake in Perry, OK! The tournament is held the last Saturday of January.

Cherokee Strip Celebration

Held the closest Saturday to September 16th. It is the largest event in Noble County and the longest running festival in the State of Oklahoma. The festivities include the Noble County Free Fair, Exchange Bank BBQ, Perry alumni Honor Roll, and the Cherokee Strip Rodeo, a 5k/10k run, Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfast, FB&T Lil’ Settlers Land run, the parade, craft and food vendors and entertainment. The night is finished off with the final day of the CSRC Rodeo at the rodeo grounds.
