Visitors to our community often ask me “What are the things that make your community so special?” Of course my initial reaction is “Everything.” But after a bit of reflection I would have to say it is our great opportunity to blend a fantastic historic background with a vibrancy that embraces a grand vision for the future and a team of citizens, businesses and government that works seamlessly to make special things happen. We are blessed to have foundation pieces that include having been the Frontier Territorial Capital and then the first state capital of Oklahoma. We are fortunate to have the largest contiguous historical district in the United States, with over 2,000 buildings on the National Historical Register. Guthrie is a town filled with fantastic Victorian architecture at every turn. We are the site of the largest Masonic Scottish Rite Temple in the world and the first Carnegie Library in Oklahoma. Yes, we are a community that has wonderful bones!
We also have a vibrancy that is manifested in the slogan “A festival for every season!” Actually, during certain times of the year, it seems like a festival or celebration for every week. Our streets bubble with the sights and sounds of ‘89er Celebrations, Midwest Liftfest, Bluegrass Festivals, Renaissance Faire, Territorial Christmas and Red Brick Nights: where we “close the city streets, to pull up a chair and just listen to the music!” (And that is certainly one descriptor of our life here in Guthrie: just pull up a chair and listen to the music.) “The arts” are a part of our guiding star. From the best regional theater around (The Pollard), to the many unique and acclaimed museums, there is a history and a vitality here that is special!
Visitors come from around the world to learn about our history, to walk our brick sidewalks and to shop our quaint boutiques and antique malls. People come to visit our museums and art galleries, to partake in the fantastic array of food and spirits that are offered daily in our coffee shops, diners, restaurants and saloons. Some come to visit and enjoy ---- some come and decide to stay -- because they like what they see and feel! And that is why Southern Living Magazine christened Guthrie with the title of “The Best Small Town in Oklahoma!”
Guthrieites SETTLE in Guthrie to enjoy all of these things plus a quality of life and life style that is progressive yet comfortable and easy! How about 10 parks, two lakes, two splash pads, handicapped accessible play grounds and a disc golf course. Visualize 405 acres of “greenbelt” and miles and miles of walking paths --- yup, right here in Guthrie, America. Fly in and out of our own jet-capable airport, home to over 130 aircraft -- making the whole world available from your doorstep. Add in a quality and dynamic public education system that integrates with the Meridian Technology Center for continued adult personal and professional development. Top it off with a coordinated medical delivery system centered around a high quality and dynamic community hospital. Mix all this and more together and what have you got? A community where the quality of living just moved to WONDERFUL!
Guthrie is a great place to visit and an even better place to live. It is a place where “the past and the future meet --- in a really good way!!”
Welcome to Guthrie, America. Live, Laugh, Enjoy, Stay!!

Guthrie History
The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad line established Guthrie in March 1887. Located in the middle of the Unassigned Lands, the train stop was named to honor Judge John Guthrie, an attorney for the railroad company. On April 22, 1889, the Unassigned Lands was opened to settlement by a land run. As the designated locations for the U.S. Land Offices, Guthrie and Kingfisher were the only towns in the Unassigned Lands. Although the U.S. Marshals had jurisdiction over keeping the peace, U.S. Army troops were also stationed at nearby Camp Russell and Camp Guthrie, a temporary post established near the city. Captain Arthur MacArthur, a Civil War veteran and father of World War II hero Douglas MacArthur, was the camp commander.
The first trains arrived in Guthrie shortly after noon. Land seekers jumping off the train discovered, much to their surprise, that most of the town lots had already been claimed by “legal sooners.” Some latecomers even claimed lots that later had to be abandoned because they were in the street. Although federal law limited the size of each townsite to 320 acres, this limit was quickly passed by the over 10,000 who came to Guthrie. This minor problem was solved by simply moving out of the city limits and creating the additional townsites of West Guthrie, East Guthrie, and Capital Hill, each with its own city government and ordinances. A general assembly of the residents held a meeting on April 23 and denounced the federal employees and others who were “legal sooners” and began seeking nominations for mayor. The citizens elected Colonel Daniel B. Dyer of St. Louis, Missouri as mayor.
Wooden buildings quickly replaced the tents and other temporary shelters by the end of May. Guthrie’s first brick building, the National Bank, was soon built at the corner of Oklahoma Avenue and First Street. In August, the city had its first City Directory which listed 6 banks, 16 barbers, 16 blacksmiths or wagon makers, 17 carpenters and builders, 2 cigar manufacturers, 7 hardware stores, 15 hotels, 19 pharmacists, 22 lumber dealers, 5 photographers, 39 doctors, 40 restaurants, 9 churches, 5 newspapers, a telegraph office, an electric plant, and 81 lawyers (mostly for filing claims).
Frank H. Greer, a sooner, established Guthrie’s first newspaper, The Oklahoma Capital, in Winfield, Kansas in March 1889. Greer printed the paper in Winfield and shipped them to Guthrie by train until his presses could arrive.
Oklahoma became a territory and Guthrie, its most prominent city, became the territorial capital with the passage of the Organic Act on May 2, 1890. President Benjamin Harrison appointed George W. Steele of Marion, Indiana, as the first territorial governor. Steele organized County Number One with Guthrie as its county seat. This county was originally to have been named Harrison, but was instead named for John Alexander Logan, a former Union general and Senator from Illinois. The four townsites were consolidated into one city by July 17, 1890.
Guthrie claimed many improvements in its first years. The federal jail, built in 1892 on the corner of Noble Avenue and Second Street, boasted two stories and sandstone walls 18 inches thick. Higher education arrived in Guthrie with the establishment of Oklahoma University that same year although financial pressures later forced it to close. In 1893, the Missouri & Kansas Telephone Company opened an exchange in Guthrie, and the first Logan County Courthouse opened in 1896 on Broad and Harrison Avenue. In 1902, the city hall moved from its original frame building on First Street to an elaborate brick building on Second Street and Oklahoma Avenue. The castle-like building, with its central belltower, was designed by Belgian-born architect
Joseph Foucart, who was Guthrie’s city architect. Although the city hall was demolished in 1955, several of Foucart’s other buildings remain in Guthrie. Architect J.H. Bennett designed the 1902 Carnegie Library, which was the second one built in the soon-to-be state and, after Oklahoma City demolished theirs, is now the oldest standing. Guthrie’s horse-drawn streetcar system, which had been developed about 1900, was replaced by an electric trolley line in 1905.
Discontinued in 1929, the trolley system once boasted 6.5 miles of track in Guthrie. Some of the original tracks can be seen on Harrison Avenue. Guthrie was also the northern stop of the Interurban line which ran south to Oklahoma City and on to Norman. This line was discontinued in 1946. Most parts of the city also had electricity, water and gas service.
Oklahoma almost came into the union as two separate states, Oklahoma and Sequoyah. President Theodore Roosevelt did not desire an uneven balance in Congress and declared that he would not sign a statehood bill unless the two territories came in as one state. He got his wish and on November 16, 1907, he declared Oklahoma as a state. In a ceremony in front of the Carnegie Library, the two territories were “married” as one state with figures representing Mr. Oklahoma Territory and Miss Indian Territory. Also, that day, the state’s first governor, Charles N. Haskell, took the oath of office on the Carnegie steps. Although it was now the state capital, Guthrie lacked a building. Under the Organic Act, Guthrie was to be the state capital until 1913. Until that time, no state monies were spent for construction of a state capital building. Guthrie city leaders built Convention Hall on Capital Square, intending to offer the building to the state as an enticement for the capital to stay in Guthrie. The brown brick structure now forms the east portion of the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple, built 1920-1929.
The political atmosphere in Guthrie was very heated between the governor and legislature (Democrats) and Frank Greer (Republican). As a result, Governor Haskell called a statewide election on Saturday, June 11, 1910 to select the permanent location of the capital. Oklahoma City won with 96,261 votes against 31,301 for Guthrie and 8,382 for Shawnee. Haskell was in Tulsa and before all the ballots were counted, he ordered his staff to take the seal and the record book of executive acts to Oklahoma City. Because of the somewhat questionable legality of the move, the State Supreme Court continued to meet in Guthrie and many legislators kept offices in both cities. In 1911, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that as a sovereign state, Oklahoma could decide when and where to establish its capital. Today, Guthrie remains one of the largest urban districts on the National Register, extending for 1,400 acres or about 400 blocks. Much of the downtown also has National Historic Landmark status.

Guthrie-Edmond Regional Airport
The Guthrie-Edmond Regional Airport has been buzzing with growth, and it’s not just because of the steady flow of aircraft arrivals. In the past year, the airport has seen significant changes, bringing new services and enhancements to pilots and visitors alike.
One of the most notable additions is the airport’s new Fixed-Base Operator (FBO), Apex Executive Jet Center, which now provides essential services to pilots. Caden Young, Airport Director for the City of Guthrie, highlighted Apex’s role, saying, “They handle everything from aircraft fueling to courtesy vehicles, offering a wide range of services for our visitors.” The improvements are already evident, with a fully renovated front lobby, increased fuel sales, and a notable rise in airport operations under Apex’s management. “We’re thrilled to have them at our facility,” Young added.
Among the exciting new services, Apex has introduced Airnoss Flight School, a state-of-the-art training center boasting three new Cirrus SR20 aircraft equipped with the latest navigation technology. “Airnoss offers
comprehensive training, from private pilot licenses to certified flight instructor credentials,” Young said, underscoring the school’s appeal to aspiring aviators.
In addition, Apex brought in Aerovets Aviation, an avionics and light maintenance shop, expanding the airport’s technical services.
Looking forward, Young shared ambitious plans for capital improvements totaling over $17 million across the next five years, supported primarily by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics (ODAA), and a shared local match by Guthrie and Edmond. Each city covers about 2.5% of large-scale project costs, with the bulk funded through federal and state grants.
“This year, we’re realigning our taxiway to ensure it runs parallel to the runway. This construction project will also ensure that the runway and taxiway meet separation standards as set forth by the FAA,” Young explained. “Once that’s complete, we’ll begin work on a new terminal and apron, which will double the current
terminal’s size.”
The upgraded terminal will feature conference rooms, a 24-hour pilot lounge, and dedicated office spaces. “These upgrades will create a premier facility for our local-based pilots and make the airport an attractive stop for transient pilots,” Young said.
Another highlight of the new terminal will be an on-site commercial kitchen and dining area, bringing a fresh food and beverage option to the airport for the first time.
Even without these improvements, the Guthrie-Edmond Regional Airport ranks among the top in the state for based aircraft. In 2017, an economic impact study by the ODAA estimated that the airport contributes $19.2 million annually to the regional economy. With these new developments, the airport aims to attract even more traffic and grow as a vital hub for regional aviation.

You don’t realize how bad you felt, until you start feeling better.” This is a quote that Stephen Hartzell, Owner and Practitioner of Strive Wellness Lounge in Guthrie said he hears quite often.
Hartzell began his career in medicine as a registered nurse and paramedic 30 years ago. Five years ago he also received his nurse practitioner’s license. Even before opening Strive Wellness Lounge, Hartzell said his motivation has always been to help people.
On February 1, 2023 Hartzell and his wife opened Strive Wellness in Guthrie, with the overall goal of helping customers treat the root causes of their conditions in a more natural way.
“We want to make people feel better without giving them all sorts of medications,” Hartzell said. “Our goal is to help them get off of some medications and get onto a more natural path.”
Some of the services offered by Strive include helping with weight loss, nutrition, and hydration. Many customers, Hartzell said, also come in for what is known as Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy.
“It’s basically optimizing men and women’s hormones to feel better,” Hartzell said.
Some of the symptoms the therapy helps to treat is exhaustion, stress, foggy thinking, weight gain, and sleep disturbances. Hartzell said Strive’s approach is to be more proactive in helping others with their health, rather than reactive.
“The functional holistic approach gets to the root causes of diseases,” Hartzell said. “Instead of fixing the symptoms, we look at the root cause to fix the process.”
Currently Hartzell said Strive serves roughly 200 to 250 people per week at not only their Guthrie location, but their second location in Stillwater, which opened February 5, 2024.
“I have so many people tell me that they have a new lease on life,” he said. “That they have drive again.”
In addition to opening a second location, Strive Wellness Lounge was also chosen as the Guthrie Chamber’s 2024 Business of the Year. Hartzell said his success is all thanks to God, and the family’s business goal to educate and help others.
As Strive Well Lounge approaches its two-year anniversary, Hartzell said he is planning to celebrate the success of both locations so far. For more information about Strive Wellness Lounge and the services offered, visit strivewellnesslounge.com.

Stables Cafe
Although the Stables Cafe is native only to Guthrie, its origin story begins in Texas. Debra Prather, Owner, Operator, & CEO of Stables Cafe, was living there with her husband and fellow Co-Owner Marc, during the mid-80’s, where they were operating a small restaurant at the time.
Prather said, because at that time the U.S. was beginning to experience what was known as the Banking Crisis of the 1980s.
Many banks, including the one in the same town as their restaurant, closed as a result.
This, and their ability to abandon their contract, Prather said, is what prompted them to move their restaurant.
“We moved from Enid to buy our first restaurant, the Next Door Restaurant in Booker, Texas in 1985,” Prather said.
While owning the Next Door Restaurant, Prather said she and Marc acquired and learned to make their barbeque recipe, “Broken Wheel BBQ.”
A man by the name of Ray Schwab had originally owned the recipe, but was unable to continue making barbeque himself. When Prather and her husband decided to open the Next Door Restaurant, one particular fan of the barbeque saw an opportunity.
“The banker insisted that he would only loan us the money for that restaurant if we agreed to sell this barbeque in the restaurant,” Prather said.
Prather said she and Marc agreed, and Schwab trained them both for six months on his recipe. Schwab also gave the couple his handmade twoton smoker to continue making his barbeque. When the couple relocated to Guthrie, Prather said their barbeque came with them.
“We had an option written into our contract with our bank that it was a trial basis, and if we wanted to abandon it, we could,” Prather said.
This turned out to be a good thing,
“We started looking for another location back in Oklahoma, because we were both from Oklahoma and wanted to move back,” Prather said. “It took us about a year and we finally found Guthrie.”
Prather said they found the location where Stables still stands today, at the corner of Noble and Division Street, the main corner in town . The building had been built in 1889 as a livery stable. At that time, the City of Guthrie was also in the process of transforming its historic downtown buildings using a grant they had acquired. Choosing to stick with the historic theme, the couple chose to name their restaurant Stables in honor of the building’s original use. They also named their house steak after the builder of the building, E. Tallman.
“Because of the location, we decided that was a good option,” Prather said. “So we rented that building for the first ten years and after ten years we purchased the building.”
Stables Cafe opened in 1987 with a full menu, ten employees, and a dining area with limited space, Prather said. Now however, the restaurant currently has roughly 50 employees, and a much larger dining area that seats between 280-300 people. In
addition to their large dining space, Prather said their menu is also quite large, with several options for guests.
“We are several restaurants in one serving a bakery full of gourmet desserts, a full BBQ MENU served with our famous mouth-watering mini onion rings and BBQ weekend buffets,” Prather said. “Then there are half pound burgers, sandwiches, Tex Mex, pasta, hand-breaded Mississippi catfish, shrimp choices, chicken and even Prime steak all cooked to order.”
In addition, Prather said Stables also features a full salad bar, which serves as their best selling item. In 2013 Stables acquired the alley and built an alley deck and an entrance for regulars to enter the Taproom 223. The Taproom proudly features Oklahoma Craft Brews, offering 22 choices on tap and hundreds of other Oklahoma, domestic, and import choices. It’s also a full bar with frozen margaritas and a perfect wine and cider list and cocktails of all kinds.
On December 10, 2023, Stables Cafe Celebrated 37 years in business. Although Prather said there are many things she has loved about her business, her favorite parts include her employees, and seeing happy customers.
Stables Cafe in Guthrie is open Tuesday-Thursday & Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information visit Stablescafe.co.
The Heritage Collection
At one time in history, the Guthrie Historical District flourished with a variety of businesses and restaurants.
The Victor Building built in 1893 was the finest commercial building of its time.. In 1982 the Victor Building went under a full restoration in support of the Historic District Preservation Movement.
tage Jewelry & Accessories
Upon the completion of the restoration, on November 12, 1982, Linda and Boyd Rice opened the Heritage Style Shop as the first tenant in the newly restored building along with the Sand Plum Restaurant that was located on the third floor As the tourists would filter through the first floor to make their way to the Sand Plum, Linda and Boyd had a vision of expansion
This vision became reality in 1986, when they leased additional space next to the Style Shop and opened The Heri-
Boutique 206
Ten years ago, Laura Long, Owner of Boutique 206, started her business as a mom making bows for her daughter. Then one day her husband, James Long, made a suggestion: why doesn’t she make and sell them in her own store?
In February, 1990, Linda and Boyd purchased the Bier Building located at 118 West Oklahoma Avenue. With the completion of a mini restoration, the Rice’s were ready to reopen their businesses; The Heritage Jewelry & Accessories was located in the front portion of the building with the Style Salon located in the back. Linda retired as a hair stylist in 1999 to devote her full attention to the retail business. In 2016 the Style Shop was permanently closed, and Linda rebranded to reflect her vision as The Heritage Collection
In 1992, an adjacent caught fire and caused significant water damage to the interior of their building, which gave them the opportunity to restore the interior to its original glory as displayed by the high metal ceiling with gold cove, which is a beautiful vision for all visitors to enjoy.
Before becoming a stay-at-home mom, Long had previously worked in retail, and thought her husband’s idea sounded good. They even had a space in mind.
“There was another boutique in town that was closing, and she actually rented a space from us in a building that we owned,” Long said. “So were like ‘ok yeah, we’ll do it here.’”
Long and her husband purchased the boutique owner’s remaining inventory to sell along with her originally planned homemade items.
“It went from being a homemade
type idea of a store to being what it is today, women’s clothing, and jewelry and accessories,” Long said. “It morphed very quickly into the retail boutique vs. the handmade boutique.”
With each item she selects, Long said she tries to imagine what her customers might like. On her facebook page Long describes Boutique 206 as “shopping for the unique” with everything a customer needs to find the perfect item for anyone.
“I really like to think that we have something for everyone from teenagers to twenty-somethings, to more mature women that want to feel good and still look good,” Long said.
Long said she tries to select items that are not only fashionable, but also suitable for nearly any occasion.
“I look at pieces that are very functional. Pieces that you can start the day with and go home and add a little
The Heritage Collection is now filled with unique beautiful jewelry to include custom designs, precious stones and craftsmanship from across the globe, unique gift items, women’s and men’s leather goods, a large variety of handbags, Tiffany Lamps, Art, Antiques and a Women’s boutique

Guthrie Public Schools Our Children, Our Future, Our Schools!
Guthrie Public Schools serves over 3,500 students in a growing school district which spans over 230 square miles. With over 460 employees, we are the largest employer in Logan County. The community has shown tremendous support of our students who enjoy all of the offerings of any large school district while still being small enough to offer the personal touch with our students and families. Learning opportunities include many advanced placement courses and concurrent enrollment where our high school students can earn college credit while in high school. We partner with Meridian Technology Center to provide our students with career specific learning opportunities. This partnership begins with a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) track within our Junior High and extends to High School students. The district offers ever expanding extra-curricular options for our students including tradition-rich athletics, award-winning fine arts and agricultural education programs. Recent additions to the options for student participation include volleyball and E-Sports. The community support is evident in bond projects including the opening of Charter Oak Elementary in the southern portion of the school district and the reconstruction of Cotteral Elementary on the west side of town set to open in the Spring of 2025. In the Fall of 2024, district voters approved a $45 million bond issue which includes another new elementary school on the east side of Guthrie. This will allow our schools to serve the expected growth that comes with the many new residential neighborhoods currently under construction.

Come Play In One Of The Parks and Lakes of Guthrie!
Adventures await in Guthrie’s expansive 405 acres of parklands and nature trails. Whether cycling or taking a leisurely walk, outdoor enthusiasts can relish the seasonal blooms and lively fountains, along with historic parks and gathering spots such as Mineral Wells Parks, renowned as the site of the inaugural football game between OU and Oklahoma A&M (OSU) in 1904. This park features a splash pad, tennis courts, pavilions, and newly added parking for community events.
Another local favorite, Highland Park, offers sports courts, an 18-hole frisbee and disc golf course, and winding nature trails. This 43-acre park was granted to the city by President William McKinley in 1889. Senior citizens often gather at Highland Hall, located on the grounds, for social activities and meals provided by Logan County Aging Services.
Liberty Lake and Guthrie Lake present recreational opportunities and picturesque views. From fishing to water skiing, or simply soaking in an Oklahoma sunset, Guthrie’s tree-lined waterfront vistas leave visitors yearning to return. Strategic planning is underway to connect neighborhood communities with bike and walking trails, linking five parks and two lake areas throughout Guthrie.
