Currently the architecture program at USFQ is housed in a small building

inside

the

campus

which

has

reached

maximum

capacity.

The new building is located in the valley of Cumbaya which is known

for

its

exclusive

malls

and

private

gated

communities

.

In the essay “Junkspace,� Koolhaas explains how the new architecture of shopping malls and business centers devalues architectural contexts.

Therefore the aim of the project "Against Junkspace" is not only to design a new school of architecture that will provide the students and faculty members the much needed space space for studios, gallery space, critique space and an auditorium but also to reduce the junkspace of the city. This is done by transforming the whole building into public space. The building provides spaces for the average citizen to use freely, such as auditoriums, cafeteria and libraries.

Since this spaces are located at different levels of the building not only at ground level a connection between the citizen, the city and the building is created.

This project is located in the neighborhood of "San Carlos", in the city of Quito.

Historically , this was a high density residential neighborhood but throughout the years it has turned into a mixed use neighborhood in which low grade businesses and industries coexist with residential homes. This situation decreased the quality of life of the original inhabitants. In order to restore the neighborhood, the municipality created a park known as "Parque Ingles" that has somewhat improved the quality of life of the citizens by providing them with green public areas. But this is still not enough, therefore, in order to further improve the situation of the neighborhood a medium scale library is proposed to be built next to the park.

Considering that nowadays books have been replaced almost completely for digital media a new type of library is proposed. This new library is focused on the digital learning experiences by creating small open spaces that encourage interactions which are contained in one main big space.

INDOOR PLAZA R E T H I N K I NG PU BL IC SPAC E

The Indoor plaza is a combination of leisure, living, and parking. Located in the developing district of Nyhamnen in the city of Malmo. This building is formed by the construction of privately-owned apartments arranged into a large arch, in this way the private parts of the building create the public space. The result is an indoor plaza which acts like a public square during the day and, after closing hours, a series of restaurants on its lower levels. It is a hybrid building that breaks with the traditional relationships of private - public and visitor - owner and city - building. The open character of the project attracts visitors and activates the area. One of the greatest advantages of this building is its programmatic flexibility in the ground floor. Since the area of Nyhamnen is still developing in the future if its needed the building can change along with the needs of the city.

The goal of this project was to design 8 houses distributed along a terrain without privileging one over the other. In order to create equal conditions a base unit was designed using the design principle of expansion (for the social areas) and contraction (for the private areas).. This unit was designed in plan and later in section, emphasizing the views when it was possible.

The unit is composed of steel elements alongside masonry. Afterwards, this unit was mirrored, and inserted in the terrain. By doing this the public spaces were created almost automatically . This process was repeated for the houses. Once this was complete it was time to place the parking lot and the playground along the terrain. Once this was done the public space previously generated by the houses tied up almost automatically the rest of the spaces

URBAN CLUB LESSONS FROM THE SOCIAL CONDENSER

"La Carolina" is an urban public park located in the financial and business heart of the city of Quito. However, what was once the lung of the city, due to its large number of green areas, is currently in complete decline due to poor interventions in terms of infrastructure repeated over the years and that will end with the subway stations in 2021. Therefore, in response to the current condition, this thesis proposes an alternative to recover the green areas lost through readjusting the sports infrastructure of "La Carolina". In this way, the proposal of an urban club arises. The club will meet the sports demand of the neighborhood and will be located in a terrain near the park. In this way it is possible release to release built footprint of the sports infrastructure of the park and reclaim it with green areas. As a result the quality of life of the inhabitants and

The goal of this project was to design an installation for the Moriska Paviliongen festival in Malmo, with the help of parametric tools, in this case grasshopper. Since this tool is very powerful things can get out of hand very easily. Therefore, we wanted to keep things simple. We designed a wooden bench

made up of straight pieces of wood. To make it a little

more interesting with the help of grasshopper we gave the pieces of woods different lengths in order to give it a wavy look. Afterwards, we laser cut all the pieces and hold them together with a metal rod to achieve the final form.

UNIT TO WHOLE 3D PRINTING

In this project we had the task to create a geometry that could work by itself but also that could act as a module when combining several pieces .

With the help of parametric design we were able to create different curvilinear variations of one shape. Once we were certain about the shape the next step was to 3D print it. Once the 3D print was ready we were able to test how the structural capacity of these shapes vary from form to form...
