Conceptualised next to the São Jorge Castle in Lisbon, overlooking the sprawling cityscape, the Secular Chapel emerges as a beacon of tranquility and contemplation amidst the bustling urban landscape. Situated atop the viewpoint, this gem is a testament to thoughtful design and spiritual harmony.
Conceived as a Laity space, the chapel’s design is rooted in inclusivity and reverence for diverse religious traditions. The octagonal shape serves as a universal symbol, allowing individuals of various faiths to find orientation and solace during their rituals and meditations.
Elevated from the ground, the chapel appears ethereal and suspended, creating a striking contrast with the formidable walls of the Castle. This elevation not only enhances the chapel’s visual presence but also offers visitors a sense of detachment from the urban clamor below, fostering a serene and contemplative atmosphere.

Upon entering the chapel, visitors are enveloped by a sense of tranquility and serenity. The spacious interior, defined by large concrete walls, exudes a cool and calming ambiance, providing respite from the heat of the sun. A skylight bathes the space in natural light, illuminating the altar and creating a celestial connection between earth and sky.
Designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings, the Miradouro do Recolhimento Secular Chapel invites visitors to pause, reflect, and reconnect with themselves and the world around them. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of architecture to inspire and uplift the human spirit, offering a sanctuary of peace and contemplation amidst the dynamic rhythm of urban life.
