INTRODUCTION
THE FOLLOWING WORK WILL CLARIFY ONE OF THE MOST COMMON
DOUBTS IN ENGLISH: THE USE OF SOME AND ANY. AND ITS USE IN SENTENCES AS IN QUESTIONS.
OBJETIVES
EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE IN USE BETWEEN SOME AND ANY.
EXPLAIN THE USE OF SOME AND ANY IN SENTENCES.
EXPLAIN THE USE OF SOME AND ANY IN QUESTIONS.
SHOW SOME EXAMPLES OF THE USE OF SOME AND ANY.
DEVELOPMENT
We used some/any, when we do not know precisely the amount or when isn´t important.
You could translate them into Spanish like this.
SOME/ANY
ALGUNA/ALGUNO
ALGUNAS/ALGUNOS
NINGUNO/NINGUNAS
Some : it´s used in affirmative or positive sentences, also to offer.
Example:
I have some eggs (Affirmative). ( Annexe 1)
Can you give me SOME information? (Positive question). ( Annexe 2 )
Would you like SOME food? (Offer question).
Using any is a bit more complex than using some.
We use any in three different ways:
Questions: when you are going to ask something, you cannot say some.
Do we have any milk?
Negative sentences: When we deny we use any since the English language does not allow double negative.
I don’t have ANY money.
We can use in your form “cualquiera” or “nada”, like to spanish “ANY of these pills will help you”
Last conclusions
The most important thing is to understand that some is used for affirmative sentences and any for questions and negations.
Can be mixed with other words
Someone or anything.
The use of some/any in the inglish lenguage is very important so you need to add in your vocabulary.
Practice some/any in sentences
There isn´t _________ chocolate.
I want _________ beer.
The pot doesn´t have ___________ sugar.
We need _________ vegetables.
There aren´t _________ students in the class.
The coffe needs __________ sugar.
Practice some/any in questions
Do you want __________ apples? ( Offering )
Is there _________ water in the bottle?
Wold you like _____________ milk? ( Offering)
Are there ________ animals in your house?
Conclusions
The use of some and any in the English language is very simple, but we must be clear if the sentence that we are going to formulate is positive or negative, if we are going to offer or what will be the meaning of our question.
