Lastyear,PastorMattencouragedachangeintheDeaconMinistry,enablingthem tokeeptheirprimaryfocusonministeringtoourchurchfamily.Anewcommittee wascreatedtotakeonthesocialfellowshipevents,andsowasthebirthof BELONG:BridgingEveryoneLinkingOlderandNewerGenerations!Congregational LifeElderSteveCorrellstated,“Ilikeworkingonactivitiesthatbringthe congregationtogether,andtheBELONGgrouphelpstobuildbridgestoconnect thedifferentagegroupsinourchurchfamily.”
Thegoalisforthisgrouptocoordinatethreeorfoureventsayear,andtheykicked thingsoffwiththetremendouslysuccessfulFamilyFeudeventatthestartof2022. Growingupinasingingchurch,Ilearnedthewordsoffaithinthehymn “TheWayoftheCrossLeadsHome.”WhenIwalkintoourSanctuary, myeyesaredrawntothequiltedcrossbannerwelcomingmehome. Standingtallwithstrikingcolors,itsfabricandstitchingofferbrightness andjoytoeachoneofus.
ItwastotheheartofSusanMartinthatGod’slightshone,seemingto nudgehertousehertalenttobringotherstothatcross.Filledwith truthandhope,thecrossliftsustohigherground.Susanfeltthe conceptofabannerofunityswirlinginhersoulandbeganajourneyof thoughtsandspiritualgrowth.Suchameaningfulideawasworthyof inputfromafamilyshehadfirstwitnessedwalkingtogetheratAsbury. DevelopingarelationshipwithDavidandBevPorterandtheirsons,she sensedadesiretodeepenherfaithandmentionedherdesiretocreate abannertohanginourSanctuary.Sensingtheirdeepfaithandtrustin
thecross,SusansharedeverystageofthecreationofthisbannerwiththePorterfamily.WhenBev suddenlybecameseriouslyill,sonsJonathanandChriswereoftenpartoftheconversation.Susanspeaks withaweofthedayDaveandsonJonathanheldthecornersoftheyetun-quilteddesignoutside, stretchingittocapturethesunlightflowingthroughit.ThesurgeofjoyandtearsinSusan’seyesspeakof anaddedlayertoherfaith,andadeeperdeterminationwithintocompletethecrossasalaboroflove. It’shardtobelievethatfallisalmostbehindus! IthasbeenabusyseasonforYouthGroup,with agoodcrowdgettingtogetherforourSaturday nightmeetings.Overthelastcoupleofmonths, wehaveenjoyedtheYouthGroupKick-offTaco Bar,aBonfirewiths’mores,andsuperfun outdoorgamesonthefield.Eventhoughthe daylighthoursaren’tlastingaslongandwefind ourselvesdoingmoreactivitiesinside,wedo stillenjoyheadingoutsideforagameofCapture theFlagorChaosandControl.
