PROJECT STATEMENT My work began from select a project from the list of well-known Landscape Architecture firms. My case study is the Princess Diana Memorial fountain which is located in Hyde Park, London. After that, I analysed the site, geographical, topographical, historical, concept, plant species, shadow, and environmental. I made the model from aerial images and project photos by using the Rhino program and created the textures of the Princess Diana Memorial fountain by using the grasshopper program. My products are analyses and models including sketch plans, sections, and perspective drawings.

Redesign part, I studied the environment of London in the next 50 years and people’s desired facilities and activities in Hyde Park. Then, I scoped my program to design the playground area instead of the Princess Diana Memorial fountain but keep the character of the memorial by adapt the texture from the memorial in many parts of the playground area. Interestingly, people can spend time in the playground area in every season and longer time per day. Moreover, I separate zone for children and parents so, everyone can use this area freely and safely because parents can see their children while children enjoy many activities in the playground area.

In the Green area, I design my new project by keeping all of the original trees and added more flowers and wetland plants. I merge the green area with the playground by using the texture from the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain. For example, I put grasses along the edge that is the depth of the texture so, people can still walk on the surface without hurting the grass. The green area also acts as a guard rail of the playground.

PROJECT STATEMENT

My project focuses on using landscape to address potential problems of the future. One of the most significant issues expected to impact areas of Great Britain in future years are flooding. The site I have selected to address in my study is located at Silverthorne Island, Bristol. The site is located near a river and a canal, so this may directly affect my project.

This area has been dominated by the timber industry since the 19th century. Interestingly, due to rising sea levels, rainfall intensity, climate change and tidal issues, there has been a very high risk of flooding in this area recently.

First, I studied the historical occurrences of floods in the area. Next, I completed a flood risk assessment for Bristol over the next 50 years and the next 100 years. Finally, I calculated the amount of water that could be involved in a flood in this area to determine the necessary scale of an effective preventive measure.

My proposal makes use of timber because this material is plentiful in the region and may be useful in creating a solution. I studied the wood tissue and model the structure of both softwood and hardwood. To begin, I selected six forms of the wood tissue for the study and created three flood protection system inspired by wood cellular structure including 1) trunk block, 2) sponge block and 3) floating block. I studied each of these forms of wood tissue in terms of their individual abilities to float in water, absorb water, and retain water. Finally, the results of my studies will be incorporated into a solution designed to accommodate water and advance waterproofing technology. Moreover, I studied about wetland and terrain to support the flood protection system. The overall goal of this project is to prevent flooding which is anticipated in the years 2060 and 2110.

FLOODING SIMULATION Simulation scenario The flooding simulation shows the height of the land in this area and the depth of water of the flood for several periods. From this diagram shows the water become flood in all of the site area. This diagram I use Rhino and Grasshopper software to analyse the water in the site in the year 2060 and 2110 by using the information from the previous diagram.

From the flood risk assessment, the diagrams show the flooding area around 2060 and 2110. After that, I used the software to calculate the amount of water on the site in 2060 and 2110. In 2060, 2110, the water in the area when the flood occurs is around 11,158.5 and 95,751.5 Cubic metres.

MATERIAL EXPERIMENT In the material experiment part, I made the physical models of the wood cellular by using the 3D printer then experiment with the water. There are three results of the experiment, including flooding, drowning and absorbing.

There are joints on the top side and bottom side of the block to connect with other blocks. The minimum thickness of the block is 2.5 cm. The maximum thickness of the block is 7.0 cm. From the research, the minimum thickness of the concrete is around 2.5 cm.

This type of block can capture water in the hole named trunk block as I design in the first area. Moreover, this block can absorb water when put this block on top of the soil called Sponge Block in the third area.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AND SYNTHESIS The comparison of existing building and design of canal edge Step 1 The first axonometric section shows an existing building on the site. There is a retaining wall along the edge, and this wall is connected with the hard scape surface; therefore, when the flood occurs, the water will flow thru all of this area.

Step 3 The third diagram shows how the terrain works with the flood protection system and wetland along the canal.

Step 2 The second diagram shows the design of the canal edge to explain how I can implement the material with my landscape project. I also want to add a water plant as a wetland in some area.

Step 4 The fourth diagram shows the last design, focusing on the walkway and balance of terrain, public route, and green space along the water.

FOREST FOR FUNGI

PROJECT SUMMARY My proposal aims to design a landscape that provides appropriate conditions for the growth of fungi without disturbance from human activities while restoring the ecosystem in terms of the food chain.

My design project is about designing with and for a range of possibilities for life: the ecological restoration of the fungal population in Epping Forest. Epping Forest,located in Essex county and partly contiguous with northeast London, is around 19 kilometres long from north to south and a maximum of 4 kilometres from east to west, comprising approximately 24 sq.km. Epping Forest has been a legally defined woodland area for over 1000 years and has been used for hunting and timber resources. My design focuses on forest management. For example, how to use the cut wood to promote an increase in fungal population.

Epping Forest contains more than 1,600 species of fungi. Fungi play a vital role in the ecological food chain. Not only do fungi play a key role in wildlife habitats, but they also protect the roots of ancient trees.

Research has shown that changes in temperature and humidity, as well as threats from other species, directly affect the growth of fungi.

Mushroom picking is another problem affecting the forest; large numbers of mushrooms are picked without concern about the effect on the forest.

The three types of water bodies that comprise the design of the “Forest for Fungi” use hydrological processes and the forest itself to support the growth of fungi. There is water in the retention pond all year round with aquatic animals and wetland, while vernal pools disappear in dry seasons, providing more walkways for people. The last type of water bodies is detention ponds which hold water from the rain for just a few hours.

LANDSCAPE CONTEXT Epping Forest There are 2 types of walkway paths in this forest. The first is the main path, which was intentionally created by humans. The second type is the minor path that develops naturally over time when humans walk by often.

Most of the fungi that I found were growing along the minor path, as there is less human interference and the soil conditions are suitable for their growth.

FOREST CONDITION

MUSHROOMS’ ROLE Epping Forest A woodland is being stripped of wild mushrooms by pickers selling them off to restaurants and markets, it is claimed. The City of London Corporation (CLC) said commercial foragers had been targeting London’s Epping Forest. It said the removal of mushrooms threatened its biodiversity and deprived animals such as deer of a food source.

Ancient trees also rely on fungi to protect their roots, it added. The corporation, which owns and manages the forest, is warning the fungus pickers that they could be fined or prosecuted for gathering mushrooms, which are protected under Epping Forest byelaws.

The topography of these 4 areas is quite flat. The section line of the site under the satellite imagery shows very little change of contour.

The location of water bodies is slightly lower than the surrounding area. Therefore, the design can control the flow of water from the height of the ground.

Site 1: Some parts of this area are easy to access via the main walkway and minor walkways while other parts are difficult to access because of the high density of trees and bush.

Site 2: This area is very easy to access as it is surrounded by a walkway and a very low density of trees.

Site 3: This area is difficult to access because there is a high density of trees and there is no walkway in this area. This area also has a high density of fungi because there are many nutrient sources such as fallen trees and wood.

In wet seasons, the forest area will be full of water bodies including retention ponds, vernal and detention ponds that set walk directions for people and protect fungi at the same time.

In dry seasons, the vernal pools and detention ponds will disappear, leaving only the retention ponds so people can access more areas in the forest.

Section shows how three types of water bodies prevent wildlife area and fungal habitat from human. There are rotting wood area and buried wood area which are fungal habitat in this section. In addition to water bodies supporting the fungal habitat, but also increate biodiversity in the forest. The pond reflects the beauty of the forest.

Design strategy

The design mainly focuses on how to protect the fungi and increase their population through the use of water bodies. The location and the shape of the new water bodies were designed with consideration of the setback of the existing trees, the possibility of a new walkway, and the wildlife area and the fungal habitat.

Most of the plants in this area, such as oak, ash and beech, provide good water absorption and grow well near water bodies.

FUNGI RESTORATION PROCESS Epping Forest Nowadays, some of the cut wood may be used to create dead hedges or fences in the forest. My strategy is to use this wood to increase the population of fungi in the long run. Therefore, some of the cut wood will still be used for fences and some will be used to increase the population of fungi, both on the wood itself and on the ground by creating rotting wood and buried wood areas.

This design project increase amount of mushrooms in the forest because the conditions created by the water bodies are favourable for mushroom growth. This Bioswales will maintain the proper temperature and humidity for fungus. This water bodies also protect fungus from human interference at the same time. Water bodies can attract wild animals in the Epping forest, such as squirrels, rabbits, birds and deers. In addition, water bodies is a source of water, and the surrounding area may have plants and fungi that are food for animals. The water bodies is in harmony with nature in the forest beautifully.
